And that amazing photograph was created with mirrors, and the hat on model Muriel Maxwell is by Lily Dache and I am pretty sure the hat attaches to the hood feature that envelopes the face, which was one way to keep a tipped hat from going askew. Click through to learn more about seeing the show.

#Repost @tbradway ・・・ Just off press from @damiani_books and @icp :the long awaited, remastered facsimile edition of Weegee’s classic book “Naked City”. _ Many thanks to @alexandergalan @pesci.silvia for the opportunity to oversee & produce the republication of this important piece of photo history. Thanks also to ICP’s Christopher George and @mpolhamus for their fantastic collaboration. _ Originally published in 1945 and one of the most important photobooks of all time, this is the first time since the 1956 edition that it has been available in its original form: the way Weegee envisioned it. _ For this edition, we used duotone scans made from Weegee's prints to get closer to the original source material. The new edition includes two commissioned texts by Christopher Bonanos and Christopher George which provide further context about the history and importance of the project. Matt Polhamus used painstaking care to rebuild the jacket (printed in six colors) as well as to match the original design grid and typography. Finally the book was masterfully printed by Faenza Printing in Italy—the finished book is an even more seductive object than I expected, and the experience has definitely been a highlight of my work in publishing. _ From the Steven Kasher Gallery website: "The influence of Weegee and of Naked City are incalculable. William Klein’s New York and Robert Frank's The Americans are unthinkable without it. Diane Arbus wrote: "He was SO good when he was good. Extraordinary!" Daido Moriyama, greatest of all Japanese street photographers cites Weegee (along with Warhol) as his major influence. Warhol's major subject is the tabloid imagery that Weegee pioneered and epitomized.” _ Releasing Spring 2020 from @artbook @thamesandhudson _ #weegee #nakedcity #icp #photography #photohistory #newyork #artbook #20thcenturyphotography #art #photographyhistory #grittynewyork #booksbooksbooks #newyorkhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B7RiXqcJaFc/?igshid=1lmgrmw7ngzrp

In celebration of back to school month, over on the blog you’ll find a new post featuring 31 old photographs of 20th century cooking classes. This photo features African American school girls with their teacher and was taken between 1910-1940. 📸 Ranging from 1899 to the 1970s, each of the photos tell their own unique story about past kitchen life. From the clothes they wore, to the equipment they used, to the kitchens they cooked in, it’s a fascinating glimpse into 20th century culinary education. Hope you enjoy it just as much. ♥️ . . . . #cookingclass #africanamericanhistory #foodhistory #cookingclasses #oldphotos #20thcenturyphotography #backtoschool #cookingschool #cookingteacher https://www.instagram.com/p/CiLDsenOxBe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#expo #exhibition #lastdays #museum #museecarnavalet #parismusees #henricartierbresson #paris #vieuxparis #20thcenturyphotography @eugenelacroix1 #eugenelacroix1 #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/CVfVH2_IYH0/?utm_medium=tumblr

In the late 1930's Eastman Kodak was experimenting with the final formulation of its new Kodachrome film and decided to give some unknown number of rolls of 35mm Kodachrome film to the photographers of Roy Stryker's Farm Security Administration project (1937-1942), among them Marion Post Wolcott, Arthur Rosenstein, Dorothea Lange, Jack Delano, Russell Lee, and John Vachon, to use as a pilot program. Only a small amount of color film was shot - there are only 644 color images in the FSA collection compared to the more well-known black and white photos of which there were over 80,000 images. Because of the difficulty at the time of publishing images in color, few of them were seen by contemporary audiences. In the 1980s, The Light Gallery in New York proposed to make 250 sets of about sixty of the original color FSA images using the color dye-transfer process and borrowed the original Kodachrome transparencies from the Library of Congress. The project was never fully realized with only thirty-five copies being made of some of the images and as few as ten of others. . Russell Lee - People at the Fair, Pie Town, New Mexico, October,1940/1986, color dye transfer print, 6 1/2 in x 10 in, The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No. 2014.474. . Marion Post-Wolcott - Shacks Condemned by Board of Health, Occupied by Migrant Workers and Pickers, Belle Glade, Florida, January, 1941/1986, color dye transfer print, 6 1/2 in x 10 in, The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No..2016.042. . Russell Lee - On Main Street of Cascade, Idaho, 1941/1986, color dye transfer print, 9 3/4 in x 13 in, The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No. 2017.534. . Russell Lee - Distributing Surplus Commodities, St. Johns, Arizona, 1940/1986, color dye transfer print, 9 3/4 in x 13 in, The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No. 2017.624. . Reposted from @gilesartbooks 💕This is love💕 This beautifully heart-warming photograph is one of our absolute favourites. It features in "A History of Photography at the University of Notre Dame (Twentieth Century)". Take a Slow Look at N. Jay Jaffee's "Learning to Skate, Livonia Avenue, East New York, Brooklyn" with the Snite Art Museum at the University of Notre Dame on Oct 15th. https://sniteartmuseum.nd.edu/visit-us/events/2020/10/15/slow-look/ We are delighted to have published this incredible #photographybook, in association with @snitemuseum and written by #DavidActon. Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was accomplished and well regarded by the early 1920s as a painter, artistic photographer and co-conspirator with Alfred Stieglitz in the founding of the Photo-Secession and Camera Work magazine, but after a bad and expensive divorce and growing doubts about his abilities “with the brush”, he needed something to renew his energies. The offer came from publisher Condé Nast to become chief photographer for Vanity Fair magazine, at the extraordinary salary of $35,000 (about $500,000 in today’s dollars). He would also add fashion work for Vogue, taking the place of the famous Baron Adolphe de Meyer who had been lured to Harpers Bazaar. He would remain at Condé Nast until 1938 and through his celebrity portraits and meticulous fashion pictures would become as famous as many of his subjects. . A Visit to the Studio of Edward Steichen (1935), U M & M Pictorial, 16mm film, The Patrick Montgomery Collection, Object No TFA-397A.
