My media this week (9-15 Jun 2024)
Tumblr media
actually me this week. week full of office meetings. did not like.
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 Murder on the French Riviera (Miss Underhay Mystery #16) (Helena Dixon, author; Karen Cass, narrator) - Kitty & Matt do a bit of off the books espionage on the French Riviera. I find this series relaxing - it's entertaining, predictable, charming & superficial.
🥰 the warmth of your doorways (cicer) - 00Q, 384K (WIP) - fake marriage that starts as a QPP, fairly quickly becomes romantic, eventual even sexual as they both heal trauma & become domesticated; great slow burn journey to get there, never got bogged down, just took its time. Loved being in JB's POV as he slowly becomes domesticated, realizes he doesn't hate it, grapples with that, realizes he's actually in love with his husband, starts working thru & healing trauma. WIP (possibly abandoned) but honestly where it currently ends makes for a reasonably satisfactory stopping point. I liked that the author was very clear upfront that QPP aren't inferior in any way but that this is the story they wanted to tell about these characters.
💖💖 +15K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
You Were a Kindness When I Was a Stranger (DevilDoll) - TW: Sterek, 8K - another forever fave reread; a bdsm arrangement-to-lovers

Why thank you @random-chaos-and-stuff
So as a “theater kid” there are a ton of musicals that I think would make amazing animated movies. Did you know that Disney as an animation company exists because of a genius gay composer named Howard Ashman? It was he and Alan Menken who were behind the Disney Renaissance, which revitalized the Disney company and brought classics like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King (etc). These all happens because it was there idea from working on musicals like Little Shop Of Horrors that they should take Broadway and bring it to the Big Screen, thus creating Disney as we know it.
Rant aside, the point is that animation has the unique ability to push the audience’s suspension of disbelief, allowing the visuals to get increasingly creative, beyond the literal sense of the scene.
There are some amazing animatic on YouTube that illustrate my point brilliantly with songs from some of my favorite musicals. To name a few of many greats: @claudiacacace ‘s great Be More Chill and Starship animatics, @yellow-py ‘s Twisted animatic, @MorciAnimations ‘s Heathers animatics, and @Shnikkels ‘s Beetlejuice animatic. Seriously tho, there are so many. Look up any musical you love and animatic and you are sure to find masterpieces.
Of course I am biased to my favorites, but to name a few personal wishlist picks:
Starship (where I get my username from): with the musical using puppets to portray non human characters, animation has tons of potential to styalize and give life to its characters.
Be More Chill: my personal favorite musical( not best by a long shot). There are so many possibilities considering the nature of this Sci-fi story and more specifically the SQUIP, who’s technology and presence inside the main characters brain can be explored in a way the stage just can’t. Again see above for my proof.
Beetlejuice: similar story, the more fantastical the story, the more potential in the visuals.
Little Shop: previously mentioned, but PLEASE GIVE US ANIMATED AUDREY 2!!!
Even beyond these fantasy story, there is still so many good cases for the more “realistic” musicals:
Mean girls: remember the 2024’s awful version of Stupid with Love? Imagine the concept of Cady daydreaming about Aaron on her math class with those fun visuals, but with actual life and energy.
Heathers: while the musical already has the “ghosts” of Veronica’s actions haunting her, her feeling throughout the story; joy, love, fear, can be even more visual explored through animation.
While my choices are for sure on the more “popular” or “mainstream” side, that doesn’t mean that less “mainstream” musicals aren’t deserving of the animation treatment too. I just single these out to prove that these films would be WANTED AND BELOVED by millions of fans.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk
Silly Game Time: What's a live-action movie or play you think would be cool to see animated (or with the Muppets if you're a fan of them)?
OK so, I’ve got some opinions here. First off, the upcoming Minecraft movie because Minecraft story mode style and to just make it that much better. Also the Epic musical has such great animatics and an entire animated version would look awesome. As for already released movies, though I haven’t really seen them, all of the descendants movies from what I have seen would have been better if they were animated and had good animation (I’ve seen parts of the movies and I feel they could just have been better) and some vibechecks to the plot. I will admit to liking animated movies and shows a lot, and being biased towards them and watching them the most, so I’m not the best person to ask probably lol. I’ve seen a lot of live actions that I think would be fun as or better as an animated version, and I’ll probably have better answers later, so apologies about all of this.
