This is a Riverdale (CW TV show) one-shot. It is the sequel to Leaving Riverdale. I couldn’t find good gifs of the characters in the one-shot, so I had to use pictures. The pictures are not mine. I found them on Google. All credit goes to the rightful owners.

It was the first day of freshman year.

Archie parked his red 2021 Ford F-150 truck in front of the school.

Archie unlocked the passenger's side door. "Have a good day."

"Thank you," Audrey said.

Audrey had olive skin and a slim build. Her straight black hair reached a few inches below her shoulders and was parted in the middle. She was wearing navy blue knee-length boots and a white long-sleeved shirt tucked into a navy blue circle skirt that reached her mid-thigh. Her brown eyes were framed by long dark lashes, and her cheeks were rosy. She had on nude lip gloss.

Audrey got out of the truck, closed the passenger's side door, and walked towards the school.

Archie pulled out of the parking lot.

Betty parked her green 2021 Honda Accord in front of the school.

Betty unlocked the passenger's side door. "Have a good day."

"Thank you," Darcy said.

Darcy had fair skin, blue eyes, and a slim build. She was wearing a green long-sleeved shirt, dark blue denim jeans, and green ankle-length boots. Her straight blonde hair reached a few inches below her shoulders and was parted in the middle. She had on a light amount of black eyeliner, a light amount of black mascara, soft pink eyeshadow, and nude lip gloss.

Darcy got out of the car, closed the passenger's side door, and walked towards the school.

Betty pulled out of the parking lot.

Darcy encountered Audrey.

Darcy smiled. "Hi, Audrey."

Audrey and Darcy had been best friends since kindergarten.

"I like your boots." Darcy said.

"Thank you," Audrey said.

Audrey and Darcy walked into the school.

Polly parked her red 2021 Toyota Camry in front of the school.

As the month progressed, Audrey, Darcy, Claire, Amelia, Olivia, Natalie, Rachel, and Megan started becoming interested in extracurricular activities. Audrey became a River Vixen, Darcy became a writer for the Blue and Gold, Claire became a River Vixen, Amelia became a River Vixen, Olivia became a River Vixen, Natalie became a River Vixen, Rachel became the photographer for the Blue and Gold, and Megan became a River Vixen.

Audrey enjoyed singing. She had a great voice. She enjoyed dancing. Veronica taught her how to dance. She enjoyed playing the guitar. Archie taught her how to play the guitar. On her birthday last year, Archie gave her a red and white 1976 Fender Telecaster, a guitar strap, and a guitar pick, and Veronica gave her a guitar case and a guitar amp. Ever since kindergarten, music had been her favourite class and she had dreamt of becoming a music teacher.

For as long as Darcy could remember, she had been hearing stories about how much Betty enjoyed writing for the Blue and Gold. She decided to give writing a shot. It turned out writing was something she enjoyed. She wanted to write for the Riverdale Register after she finished high school.

Claire enjoyed dancing. Polly taught her how to dance. She wasn't interested in pursuing a career in the arts. She wanted to become a history teacher after she finished high school. History was her favourite class.

Amelia enjoyed singing. She had a great voice. She enjoyed dancing. Toni taught her how to dance. She had no interest in college. After she finished high school, she wanted to take over the Blossom family's maple syrup business.

Olivia enjoyed singing. She had a great voice. She enjoyed dancing. Lucy taught her how to dance. Gym was her favourite class. She wanted to become a gym teacher and coach the River Vixens after she finished high school.

Natalie enjoyed singing. She had a great voice. She enjoyed dancing. Kevin was able to get Cheryl to teach her how to dance. For as long as she could remember, she had been hearing stories about how much Kevin enjoyed directing musicals and being a drama teacher. Directing musicals and being a drama teacher sounded like things she would enjoy. She planned to direct a musical before she finished high school. She planned to become a drama teacher after she finished high school.

Rachel enjoyed taking pictures. Photography was something she was good at. Hannah taught her everything she knew. She wanted to take pictures for the Riverdale Register after she finished high school.

Megan enjoyed dancing. Emma taught her how to dance. She wasn't interested in pursuing a career in the arts. She wanted to become an English teacher after she finished high school. English was her favourite class.

At the beginning of sophomore year, Audrey, Darcy, Claire, Amelia, Olivia, Natalie, Rachel, and Megan turned 16 and got their learner's permits.

Archie started teaching Audrey how to drive. Betty started teaching Darcy how to drive. Spencer started teaching Claire how to drive. Cheryl started teaching Amelia how to drive. Reggie started teaching Olivia how to drive. Kevin started teaching Natalie how to drive. Sweet Pea started teaching Rachel how to drive. Fangs started teaching Megan how to drive.

Audrey, Darcy, Claire, Amelia, Olivia, Natalie, Rachel, and Megan got their driver's licenses. Veronica bought Audrey a black 2022 Lexus ES. Betty bought Darcy a red 2022 Chevrolet Malibu. Darcy was sitting on the bleachers. Riley was sitting next to her, holding his notebook and pen, ready to take notes. She had given him the task of writing about the game. Rachel was sitting next to him, holding her digital camera, ready to take pictures. Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug were sitting next to her.

A blue and gold bow was pinned to the back of her head, keeping her hair out of her face. Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug stood up, cheering for Dylan as he made his way to the touchdown line and threw the ball on the ground.

Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug sat back down.

It started to rain, making the field muddy and slippery.

Darcy opened her umbrella and held it above her head so she wouldn't get wet.

Riley opened his umbrella and held it above his head so he wouldn't get wet.

Rachel opened her umbrella and held it above her head so she wouldn't get wet.

Brad opened his umbrella and held it above his head so he wouldn't get wet.

Chris opened his umbrella and held it above his head so he wouldn't get wet.

Justin opened his umbrella and held it above his head so he wouldn't get wet.

Courtney opened her umbrella and held it above her head so she wouldn't get wet.

Erica opened her umbrella and held it above her head so she wouldn't get wet.

Doug opened his umbrella and held it above his head so he wouldn't get wet.

Halftime came. The football players walked off of the field. The River Vixens walked onto the field. Amelia, Audrey, Claire, Natalie, and Megan formed a pyramid.

Amelia was at the top of the pyramid. Audrey and Claire were below her, holding the bottoms of her feet. Natalie and Megan were below Audrey and Claire, holding the bottoms of their feet. Olivia and the other River Vixens stood to the right of the pyramid, pom-poms rustling in their hands.

"Give me an r!" Amelia shouted.

"R!" The crowd shouted.

"Give me an i!" Amelia shouted.

"I!" The crowd shouted.

"Give me a v!" Amelia shouted.

"V!" The crowd shouted.

"Give me a d!" Amelia shouted.

"D!" The crowd shouted.

"Give me an a!" Amelia shouted.

"A!" The crowd shouted.

"Give me an l!" Amelia shouted.

"L!" The crowd shouted.

"Give me an e!" Amelia shouted.

"E!" The crowd shouted.

"What does that spell?" Amelia asked.

"Riverdale!" The crowd shouted.

"When I say Riverdale, you say Bulldogs!" Amelia shouted, pom-poms rustling in her hands. "Riverdale!"

"Bulldogs!" The crowd shouted.

"Riverdale!" Amelia shouted.

"Bulldogs!" The crowd shouted.

Amelia pushed herself off of Audrey and Claire's shoulders. Their hands pushed up at the bottoms of her sneakers, launching her high into the air.

Everything felt like it went in slow motion when Amelia was up in the air. The beat of the rain and the band seemed to slow down. The flash of Rachel's camera glinted in the rain around her. She twisted her body, feeling her muscles tense and stretch as she spun in the air, rain whipping off of her hair and the bottom of her skirt.

Amelia's back was to the ground now. She landed in the basket catch the squad spent days practicing. The sounds of the band's brass section, the rain, and Audrey's breathing came rushing back. She regained her footing, never letting go of Audrey's shoulder as the other River Vixens dispersed to retrieve their pom-poms.

Amelia let go of Audrey's shoulder. They walked toward the River Vixens' section of the bleachers.

Amelia and Audrey sat on the bleachers. They watched the football players slam into each other with brutal force, rain bouncing off of their uniforms.

Dylan scored a touchdown in the last 4 seconds of the game. The River Vixens, Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, Doug cheered for him.

Riverdale High had gotten 20 points. Centerville High had gotten 16 points.

Dylan took his helmet off and jogged over to Claire.

"You did it!" Claire yelled.

Claire kissed Dylan, not caring that some of the other football players were whistling and hollering at them. He tried to lift her but slipped on the mud, bringing them both down. She kissed him one last time before they were surrounded by hundreds of Riverdale students. As the two of them were pulled up by Justin and Olivia, Claire heard people chanting Dylan's name and couldn't help but join in.

It was the night of the 106th annual variety show.

Darcy was hosting the variety show.

Several people had gathered in the auditorium.

There were two microphone stands on the stage. They had been provided by the school.

Darcy left the backstage area and stepped up to the first microphone stand. "Hello, Riverdale High, and welcome to the 106th annual variety show. Our first performers are Audrey Andrews and Christopher Johnson."

Darcy left the stage and went backstage.

Darcy was wearing green high-heeled pumps and a long-sleeved green dress with a circle skirt that reached her mid-thigh. Her long blonde hair was parted in the middle and styled in barrel curls. She had on a light amount of black eyeliner, a light amount of black mascara, soft pink eyeshadow, and nude lip gloss.

Audrey and Chris were backstage.

Chris was wearing black loafers, a black necktie, and a long-sleeved white button down shirt tucked into dark blue denim jeans. A black leather belt with a silver buckle was around his waist.

Audrey's guitar case and guitar amp were on top of a table. She opened the case. She took her red and white 1976 Fender Telecaster and her guitar pick out of the case. She picked up her amp and left the backstage area.

Audrey stepped up to the first microphone stand. She set her amp down on the floor. She plugged her guitar into the amp. She slung her guitar strap over her shoulder.

Christopher's guitar case and guitar amp were on top of a table. He opened the case. He took his black and white 1976 Fender Stratocaster and his guitar pick out of the case. He picked up his amp and left the backstage area.

Chris stepped up to the first microphone stand. He set his amp down on the floor. He plugged his guitar into the amp. He slung her guitar strap over his shoulder.

Darcy was sitting on the bleachers. Riley was sitting next to her, holding his notebook and pen, ready to take notes. She had given him the task of writing about the game. Rachel was sitting next to him, holding her digital camera, ready to take pictures. Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug were sitting next to her.

Amelia, Claire, Audrey, Natalie, Megan, Olivia, and the other River Vixens stood to the right of Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug, pom-poms rustling in their hands as the Bulldogs ran out of the locker room and the marching band began to play.

The game started. A Riverdale student got the ball. He was the shooting guard. Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug stood up, cheering for him as he ran down the court and threw the ball into the net.

The game continued. Chris got the ball.

Chris was wearing blue Nike basketball shoes with white laces, blue knee-high basketball socks with two horizontal gold stripes on the top, blue basketball shorts with two gold vertical stripes on each side, and a sleeveless blue basketball jersey with a v-neck, two gold stripes on the collar, the word Timberwolves emblazoned on the front in gold letters with white trim, his last name emblazoned on the back in white, and the number 26 emblazoned on the back in white.

Chris was an excellent point guard. He was in the middle of every play, every pass, and every assist without ever dominating the court himself. He snuck past defenders and kept them on their toes with how quickly he could become unpredictable. Within just a few minutes, he had gotten 5 points.

A few seconds after halftime came to an end, a defender plowed into Christopher's side to get the ball, and the force of the impact is so strong that Christopher was knocked into the sidelines.

Rachel winced. "Fuck. That looked like it hurt."

The whistle was blown for an obvious foul.

In the end, Chris walked away with nothing worse than a twisted ankle. He sat on the bench for the remaining 5 minutes of the game.

Riverdale High won with a score of 20 to 11.

Basketball season ended on Friday, March 6, 2048. Riverdale High had won the state championship.

In April of 2048, Riverdale High School did a stage adaptation of the movie High School Musical.

Natalie directed the musical.

Courtney was in charge of casting. She was also in charge of costume design. Because she didn't know how to sew, the clothes worn in the musical were provided by the cast, except for the replicas of the basketball uniforms and cheerleading uniforms from the movie High School Musical, which were purchased online.

Erica was in charge of lighting and sound design, which meant she had to press a button to turn a light on or off and start or end a song.

Megan was in charge of choreography.

Darcy was the stage manager. She was responsible for scheduling rehearsals, managing furniture and props, scheduling costume fittings, making alterations to the set and props in between scenes, managing the areas behind the stage during performances, and maintaining props, furniture, and sets during performances.

Chris played Troy Bolton. Audrey played Gabriella Montez. Olivia played Sharpay Evans. Amelia played Kelsi Nielsen. The other characters were played by the other students who had auditioned for the musical.

Archie and some of his employees built the sets.

Sophomore year ended on Wednesday, June 24, 2048.

Junior year started on Wednesday, September 9, 2048.

Audrey and Chris applied for the music education program at Ohio State University. They got accepted.

Darcy and Riley applied for the journalism program at New York University. They got accepted.

Claire applied to Barnard College. She got accepted. She would be majoring in history.

Dylan applied for Columbia University. He got accepted. He would be majoring in physical education.

Courtney applied for the journalism program at New York University. She got accepted.

Olivia applied to Columbia University. She got accepted. She would be majoring in physical education.

Justin applied to Columbia University. He got accepted. He would be majoring in English.

Natalie applied for the acting and musical theatre program at Carnegie Mellon University. She got accepted.

Erica applied for the journalism program at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She got accepted.

Rachel applied for the photojournalism program at George Washington University. She got accepted.

Brad applied for the journalism and mass communication program at George Washington University. He got accepted.

Audrey played Elle's enemy turned friend, Vivienne Kensington. Chris played Elle's love interest, Emmett Forrest. The other characters were played by some of the other students who had auditioned for the musical.

Courtney was in charge of casting. She was also in charge of costume design. The clothes worn in the musical had either been provided by the cast or purchased online. Natalie told her to put her own spin on the costumes rather than copy the costumes of the previous productions but still make sure Elle and Mrs. Woods wore pink.

Erica was in charge of lighting and sound design.

Megan was in charge of choreography.

Senior year started on Wednesday, September 8, 2049.

In April of 2050, Riverdale High School put on a production of the musical Jekyll & Hyde. The musical was a little risqué, but it wasn't as bad as Heathers: The Musical, so no changes had to be made.

Chris played Henry Jekyll and his alter ego, Edward Hyde. Natalie played Henry's fiancée, Emma Carew. She also directed the musical. Audrey played Lucy Harris, a prostitute and the main attraction of the brothel The Red Rat. Olivia played Lady Elizabeth "Bessie" Beaconsfield, the only female member of the Board of Governors of St. Jude's hospital. Amelia played Nellie Brown, a prostitute who worked at The Red Rat. The other characters were played by some of the other students who had auditioned for the musical.

Mary Hocks mentions the notion of hybridity in visual communication, which I believe is an essential characteristic when considering the relationship between verbal and visual text(s). Hocks acknowledges the importance of multimodal forms of communication, along with understanding text as hybrid. According to Hocks, the “new media and the literacies they require are hybrid forms” that are “verbal, spatial, and visual” (Hocks, 2003. p. 631). This made me think of a recent event that prompted me to investigate investing in another suitable car for the little family I brought with me to Albuquerque. On Thursday, December 9, I discovered that my girlfriend is pregnant, which prompted me to start my search for something economical, family-friendly, and dependable since we frequent El Paso, Texas throughout the year. I thought of Hocks because, well, at heart I am an auto enthusiast, so, I look for horsepower, style, and weight before considering the gas mileage. 

As I embarked on my journey to find us an economic SUV (as my girlfriend wanted me to do), I came across several dealership websites, and noticed a few things that relate to visual rhetoric–these websites use marketing as a means to appeal to their products. First, I noticed that dealerships and larger brands/makes (i.e., Ford, Chevy, Honda, etc.) use visuals to enhance their sales before allowing the user (me) to browse for, well, the things we initially wanted (e.g., dependability, economy, and style). What’s interesting is that certain websites (e.g., Chevrolet) do different moves while still relying on the text to communicate what the company’s website wants its audience to see. 

While shopping for a new vehicle, I found Chevy’s website of particular interest. Chevy’s decision to elicit a sense of wanting to touch an older model car–which they provide via a video towards the bottom of the page–elicits memories of wanting the heritage that comes with sports cars. I recalled Hocks arguing the following assertions in advocating for the perception of computers as visual artifacts:

The screen itself is a tablet that combines words, interfaces, icons, and pictures that invoke other modalities like touch and sound. But because modern information technologies construct meaning as simultaneously verbal, visual, and interactive hybrids, digital rhetoric simply assumes the use of visual rhetoric as well as other modalities” (Hocks, 2003. p. 631).

Aside from the car in the video being my ultimate dream car (1964 Chevrolet Impala), the video makes you want the heritage, power, and honor that comes with owning a Chevy, especially one of their sports cars. 

The company uses its clever design elements to capture the viewer’s attention (me), while also using text to identify and communicate options that would not likely be as effectively communicated through the use of visuals. Moreover, on Ford’s website, designers used a similar strategy to interact with viewers, in addition to using appealing colors to promote their line of SUV’s. For example, Ford uses their trademark color (Ford Cobalt Blue) on the 2021 Ford Explorer ST (subjectivity–it’s the sport option), while simultaneously including two purchasing options and not letting the audience lose sight of the Ford Explorer. Fixating the SUV, along with the purchasing options (subjectively) demonstrates how “visual and verbal elements work together to serve the rhetorical purposes and occasions” of the Ford company (Hocks, 2003. p. 631).

The Future of Car Navigation Has Arrived The next time your car’s navigation system takes you right to the front door of a perfect little back-road barbecue joint, thank the U.S. military. The Global Positioning System — a network of satellites that enables location pinpointing — exists courtesy of the Defense Department. The Space Force and Coast Guard are now responsible for its operation. But motorists didn’t have to wait for the military to develop GPS for help in getting to where they were going. As far back as the 1930s, the Iter Avto, an aftermarket device, offered navigation guidance. With scrolling paper maps and a speedometer cable connection, the dash-mounted device could track an approximate route, as long as the driver remained on the straight and narrow. Going off route even momentarily would throw a wrench in the works. Such mapping technology evolved over the years, sometimes fitfully. But GPS is now a crucial driving companion. Smartphones use its satellite signals for navigation and other purposes. There are drawbacks to using a phone for navigation, particularly if it doesn’t tap into a car’s infotainment system. Positioning a phone just so can be tricky, and because smartphones rely on a cellular signal for map data, coverage can be lost in areas like mountains where reception is poor. But smartphones are convenient, and nearly everyone has one. Apple and Google maps are both automatically updated as necessary. Most newer vehicles allow for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to pop up on a big in-dash monitor. New aftermarket navigation systems, mounted atop the dash or installed in the dash, are a step up from a smartphone — and that Iter Avto. For example, the Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S navigation system can be ordered with a 6.95-inch screen for good visibility. The Garmin provides spoken turn-by-turn directions using street names and landmarks. Points of interest and hospitality facilities are called out, traffic jam warnings issued, speed limits displayed and driver alerts provided. Other top models, from the likes of TomTom and Magellan, also offer full feature sets. All aftermarket navigation systems come loaded with localized maps, and wireless updates are generally provided. Many “best of” lists are available on the web. But better than smartphones and on-dash devices are the navigation systems that automakers are plugging into their cars. These factory-installed systems offer better accuracy, more features and better integration. The screen is usually beefier, and a built-in system won’t attract thieves like a unit suction-cupped to the dash. The integrated systems usually have more powerful chips than aftermarket models, and their antennas can be larger and better placed. The navigation system in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is a good example of how far the technology has come. If you select audio driving directions in the system menu, the voice underscores the required action. When approaching a right turn, the voice comes from the right side of the vehicle. As you approach the intersection, volume increases. If you’d rather listen to the vehicle’s 36-speaker surround-sound system, you can turn off the voice and depend instead on the large, high-resolution display on the vehicle’s 16.9-inch infotainment screen. A heads-up display of route directions supplements it in the windshield. You get a well-defined map, of course, but the system also provides pictures of road signs at key intersections, indicating, for example, which way you should go at a fork in the road. Switch on augmented reality and the vehicle’s cameras provide a picture of the road ahead with a map superimposed. When you’re choosing a destination, and upon arrival, the system provides pictures so you know what to look for. It can also show you the surrounding area. Those pictures are provided courtesy of Google Street View, which includes millions of panoramic images sourced through Google’s own work and the contributions of ordinary people with cameras. Most vehicle navigation systems take advantage of Google mapping and photography. Tesla’s navigation system can even provide aerial views from Google Earth on its 17-inch screen. Luxury brands like Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac all offer feature-packed navigation systems, but you don’t have to spend six figures to get GPS guidance. Chrysler’s Uconnect navigation systems are looked on favorably by car owners, according to Consumer Reports, In a Jeep Cherokee, Uconnect can be easily set in motion by speaking an address. The system uses sensors to assist GPS in places like tunnels or parking garages where it might lose touch with the satellites. The 2021 Ford Bronco, a vehicle meant to explore beyond the end of the road, offers SYNC 4 navigation on a 12-inch screen in models priced at about $40,000 and up. This GPS-guided navigation system can help drivers find their way around the wilderness and provides camera views to assist those who might wish to scale a rock or two. While automaker-installed navigation systems have become complex in recent years, the first to appear in cars were more modest. In 1981, Honda, Stanley Electric and Alpine developed the Electro Gyro-Cator, which used a gyroscope to determine inertia and translucent maps on an illuminated screen to illustrate a route. Sold only in Japan, the system added the equivalent of $2,750 to the price of a car and worked marginally well. It demonstrated that given the starting point, speed and heading, a location could be calculated. It’s what engineers call a dead-reckoning system. Other dead-reckoning systems would follow, including some using digital maps stored on tapes or other media. But dead reckoning can never be absolutely precise, and the chances of going off course are considerable. Then came GPS, and navigation grew up. The first GPS navigation device offered by a carmaker arrived in the 1990 Mazda Eunos Cosmo, offered only in Japan. General Motors followed in 1992 with a system installed in rental cars. In 1995, it was offered as an option on the Oldsmobile 88. Using maps stored on cartridges, the system was first marketed with only California and Las Vegas mapping, but other cartridges followed. While automakers gradually added GPS navigation systems to luxury models, the aftermarket seized on the concept. Alpine offered a system that used compact disc maps in 1997, and Garmin followed suit in 1998. The roots of GPS technology go back to 1842 when the Austrian physicist Christian Andreas Doppler described how motion affects the frequency of sound waves. This Doppler effect is illustrated by the whistle of an approaching train. As it draws near, more sound waves reach your ear and the pitch increases. As the train moves away, the pitch decreases. In the late ’50s — those thrilling days of Sputnik — scientists demonstrated that an Earth-orbiting satellite could be tracked by bouncing a microwave signal off it and observing how its motion altered the frequency of the returning signal. In the mid-60s, the Navy needed to track submarines carrying nuclear weapons. Using six orbiting satellites, Navy scientists found they could observe changes in Doppler when radio waves from subs were bounced off the satellites, thus calculating the subs’ locations. The Defense Department expanded on the concept and in the early ’70s began development of a precise satellite navigation system. The first Navigation System With Timing and Ranging satellite was launched in 1978. A full complement of 24 Navstar satellites became operational in 1993. Global oil prices have fully recovered from the pandemic

What’s happening: Brent crude futures, the global benchmark, have breached $60 per barrel, their highest level since January 2020.

The immediate catalyst appeared to be weekend remarks from President Joe Biden that the United States will not lift sanctions on Iran to get the country back to the negotiating table. But oil prices have been on the upswing for months thanks to optimism that coronavirus vaccines will unleash demand while producers avoid flooding the market with supply.

“With Covid-19 cases now declining in certain regions, including the US and the UK, there will be a glimmer of hope that the worst is now behind us, particularly as the rolling out of vaccinations picks up,” ING commodities strategists Warren Patterson and Wenyu Yao said in a recent note to clients.

There are also meaningful signs of demand recovery in high-growth economies such as China, India and Brazil, UBS oil analyst Giovanni Staunovo told me.

The demand trajectory is definitely “pointing upwards,” he said.

Meanwhile, producers are working hard to keep supply in check so there can continue to be a meaningful drawdown in inventories, which filled up last year.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies agreed to keep production broadly steady in February and March, while Saudi Arabia said it would voluntarily cut its production by 1 million barrels per day from January’s levels.

Producers in the United States, for their part, are expected to need longer to get back up to speed.

“Investment activity has been relatively muted, and it will still take time to see a bigger impact,” Staunovo said.

Taken together, this is good news for prices. The trend has supported the shares of oil companies like Exxon and Chevron since November.

That said: Such stocks remain well below where they were before the pandemic hit, underscoring the long road ahead.

If investors become worried that asset prices have moved too high, too fast, both stocks and oil prices could be put under pressure. And the demand forecast remains murky, especially as new coronavirus variants complicate back-to-normal timelines.

AstraZeneca said over the weekend that its Covid-19 vaccine showed limited protection against the variant first identified in South Africa. It’s working to develop a new version that it could deploy this fall.

Remember: The International Energy Agency last month revised its forecast for 2021 global oil demand lower, citing “renewed lockdowns in a number of countries” that would weigh on fuel sales. Oil companies are also locked in a serious debate about whether demand can ever fully bounce back. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, the picture looks brighter, but with many unknowns.

Hyundai and Kia: We’re not talking to Apple about a car deal

Shares of Hyundai (HYMTF) and Kia plunged Monday after the South Korean automakers said they were not in talks with Apple to develop self-driving cars, closing the door on weeks of speculation.

“We are not having talks with Apple about developing self-driving cars,” Hyundai said in a statement.

The statement added that Hyundai has received requests from “numerous companies” about developing self-driving electric cars, but that “no decision has been made as we are in the beginning stage.” Apple declined to comment, my Appradab Business colleagues Jill Disis and Gawon Bae report.

The announcement jolted investors who had been betting on some kind of tie-up between the companies following news reports. Kia’s stock plummeted nearly 15%, its worst day since at least 2001, according to data provider Refinitiv. The fall wiped $5.4 billion off its market value.

Hyundai’s stock fell more than 6%, losing about $2.8 billion in market value.

Interest from Apple in South Korea’s automakers made sense. Analysts have pointed out that Hyundai has been open to joining forces with tech firms. It already has partnerships with with Chinese search giant Baidu and US chipmaker Nvidia on autonomous driving, for example.

The big question: If Apple moves ahead with its car, prevailing wisdom is that it would opt to work with an experienced manufacturer. But who? Analysts have also floated Honda and Volkswagen as possible options, and attention may now turn in that direction.

Despite huge losses, US airlines are rolling in cash

The US airline industry just closed the books on the worst year in its history. But carriers still ended 2020 awash in cash, my Appradab Business colleague Chris Isidore reports.

The nation’s four largest airlines — American, Delta, United and Southwest — closed out last year with a collective $31.5 billion in cash on their balance sheets. That’s up from $13 billion one year earlier, before the pandemic hit.

What gives: Though these airlines blew through $115 million a day over the course of the final nine months of 2020, easy borrowing has allowed them to shore up their finances.

Like a struggling family flooded with credit card offers, airlines have plenty of people on Wall Street eager to lend them money or help them raise funds from investors. Rock-bottom interest rates play a big role.

“The liquidity is at record levels,” said Philip Baggaley, chief credit analyst for the airline industry at Standard & Poor’s. “That’s good, and it’s one of the few strong points they have at this point.”

In addition to selling bonds and taking out loans, airlines have mortgaged their planes, frequent flyer programs and other assets, and even sold additional shares of stock, an unusual move for an industry in crisis. Meanwhile, they’ve made deep cost cuts.

“I think the general feeling is they’re wounded but they’re going to make it,” Baggaley said.

Norman Lamar Prater 

Norman was born on June 6th, 1956. He was white, 5'8", 130 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, and attached earlobes, at the time that he went missing. On January 14th, 1973, Norman left his house in Dallas, Texas, saying that he would be back in a short while, to help his mother move the next day. He never returned. According to his bio on the Charley Project, he went to an all night coffee shop where his mother worked and had a soft drink. He was accompanied by two teen boys with shoulder length hair that his mother didn't know, and an older hispanic man that she knew by sight. Authories believe that Norman may have been the victim of a serial killer named Dean Corll. Corll was nicknamed the 'Candy Man' and the 'Pied Piper' because he and his family had owned a candy factory and gave away free candy to the local children. Corl had two teenaged accomplices named David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. The teens partook in the sexual assault, torture, and murders of at least 28 young men and teens in Texas from 1970-1973.

Coincidentally, Norman went went to Jackson Junior High School in Houston, which Henley had also gone to. From 1970-1971, Norman lived with his father in a neighborhood where many victims of Dean Corll's came from. When Norman went to live his mother in Dallas, he continued to visit Houston regularly on the weekends. It hasn't been proven that Norman was a victim of Corll's, but there is the possibility that Corll may have had more victims. It should be noted though, that Corll was white. In 2021, Norman would be 64, going on 65 years old. There have been 66 unidentified people compared to his cases, all have been excluded. Danny Lee Jones

Danny was born on January 26th, 1959. He was a white male, that was 5'5", 150 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He had a scar on his right arm from a near amputation. At the age of 15, on September 1st, 1974, Danny went missing from Gilmer, Texas. Authorities believe that he left on his own accord. There have been 54 doe comparisons to his case, of which all have been excluded. As of 2021, Danny would be 61 years old. Investigating Agency: Gilmer Police Department 903-843-5545

Robert Douglas Sparks

Robert, also known as Bob, was born on either January 20th, or 22nd 1927. He was white, with brown hair, and brown eyes. He was 5'10', and 168 pounds, with a large scar on his right leg. At the time that he went missing, he was 46 years old. Bob was a retired Air Force Officer and private pilot. At the time that he went missing, he was wearing slacks, a short sleeved shirt, and a tan sweater. On November 19th, 1972, he was hired by a man named Lonnie D. Shaw (who went by Lon), that wanted Bob to fly him around the lower Rio Grande Valley for two hours to take pictures. Robert rented a 1970 Piper Cherokee 235 that is described as wine and white with gold trim from Upper Valley Aviation.

Robert and Lonnie Shaw departed McAllen, Texas with Shaw's two small pieces of luggage and a camera. At 1:50 pm, Robert advised over the radio that he was en route to Tampico, Mexico, cancelling the original flight plan. A few minutes later, he sent the message again, knowing that he didn't have the right paperwork to fly into Mexico at the time, investigators believe that Robert was under duress at the time. The plane had enough fuel for a 500 mile trip. Lonnie D. Shaw had been in and out of mental institutions. He was born around 1934, was 6'1, and 160 pounds. He his described as having had a slim build with gray or greying hair. I am unsure what family Lonnie may have had. Neither were ever seen or heard from again. Robert Shaw left behind a wife and four children. The ID number for the plane was N8529N, that the FAA de-registered in 1988. Neither Lonnie Shaw or Robert Sparks are listed on Namus.

Personally, I believe that Robert must have been set up by Lonnie to take him to Mexico, Lonnie potentially fleeing the country for some reason. It's possible that Lonnie may have had a gun and forced Robert to fly into Mexico. I imagine that the two may have gotten into a fight and crashed somewhere in the gulf of mexico. David Wayne Waggoner

David was born on November 11th, 1947. He is listed to have served in the Marines at some point. He was a white male with black/dark brown hair, with brown eyes. He was 5'9" (or 5'10") and 160-170 pounds. David had small vertical scars on his cheeks and horizontal scar on his chin. He had previously had two small fractures and a broken collar bone from a motorcycle accident.

David is listed as hard of hearing in his left ear. At the time of his disappearance he wore dark rimmed glasses, and was usually known to have worn dress shirts and slacks or blue jeans. He was known to wear a watch. David went missing at the age of 23, on October 9th, 1971 from Pasadena, Texas. He was last seen at this home which was around the 2700 block of Lafferty. His car was found parked in a front of his apartment with the keys in the ignition. There were clothes, a suitcase, and a small amount of money left inside the house. Two weeks later, a hunter located David's red Honda 350 motorcycle with the helmet sitting on top, in the woods off of highway 59 in Cold Springs, Texas, about 70 miles north of Houston. Allegedly, David only took his wallet and .9 millimeter pistol. His family believe that he may have had a run in with James C. Parker, also known as 'Humpy', who was the sheriff of San Jacinto county, Texas (which is just north of Harris county). James Parker and two of his deputies went to prison for detaining and torturing young men they met on 59 in the 70's and 80's. They liked to target hippies, black men, motorcyclists, and men with bumper stickers advertising rock stations. He has not been linked to David's case, and died in federal prison in 1999. At the time of his disappearance, David was unemployed, and quit his last job because it bored him. His family do not think that he would have left without warning, and that David wasn't depressed or suicidal in 1971. Even though his parents are now deceased, David's sister is still searching for him, and believe that he may have been taken against his will. There have been 70 does compared to his case, all of which have been excluded. His sister has a facebook page dedicated to the search of him.

I decided to take a look at some unidentified people that were found in the Harris, San Jacinto, and Fort Bend county areas. The first is a male that was found on May 20th, 1972. They have no exclusions to their case and are estimated to have died sometimes around 1971-72. They are listed as having been less than 50 years old, but at least 35. The deceased was but skeletal remains found behind an abandoned building, no torso, and missing limbs. Race is uncertain. Their age group is anywhere from 40-50 years old, and they were 5'10, and about 145 pounds. John Doe was found drifting downstream at the Portland Cement Company, with all parts recovered and had a recognizable face. They had brown hair, brown eyes, and full side burns. He is listed as wearing blue pants from Sears, a size 32. He had on brown boxer shorts, size 18, a yellow shirt, and brown wing tip well worn shoes and socks. There have been no exclusions to this case.

Next is a man found on February 7th, 1974. He is listed as having been white, and anywhere from 35-55 years old. He was 5'9, and estimated to have been 165 pounds. John was found floating in Buffalo bayou year the Houston Shell and Concrete Co. in Houston, Texas. His namus profile states that he was not recognizable, with partial remains and soft tissues, with limbs missing. He was found wearing only grey or green pants, and white shorts with blue stripes. There is only one exclusion, but it is not David.

Another male is from November 17th, 1974. He does not have any exclusions to his case. He is listed as having been 18-25 years old, and was 5'5 and about 135 pounds. He was white. John Doe was found in Houston, involved in a pedestrian motor vehicle accident with all parts recovered and a recognizable face. He had black hair that was thick and 6 inches long, with long sideburns and a thick mustache with stubble. His eyes are listed as having been brown.

On October 24th, 1975, a man was found in Harris County. He is listed as having been white, and anywhere from 20-30 years old. He was 5'11 and 145 pounds. His body was recovered from an abandoned house, with all parts recovered but listed as not recognizable. His remains were in putrefaction. John Doe has light brown to blond hair, and his eye color is unknown. There are no exclusions to his case. He was 5'8", 137 pounds with brown hair. His eye color is unknown. John's hair is listed as having been 6-7 inches long. His body was found in Buffalo Bayou with his remains unrecognizable. There is only one exclusion to his case, James Kendall Maxey from Alabama.

On November 24th, 1974, a man was found in Houston. He is listed as having been white, and anywhere from 18-40 years old. He was 5'11 and about 145 pounds. John Doe was found in the Houston Ship Channel off City Dock 30, with his remains unrecognizable. He is known to have had brown hair, and 34 dollars in cash on his person. He was found wearing a brown knit sweater, a tan shirt, brown trousers, brown socks, brown shoes, and blue-green silk ladies underwear. The only exclusion is John Dial from Texas.

There are many more John Does in the Houston area, all before 1985 alone, but two from San Jacinto County really caught my eye. First is the male found on December 7th, 1979. He is listed as less than 50 years old, and anywhere from 30-45 years old. He is estimated to have been 5'6, but his race is uncertain. The estimated year of death is virtually unknown, listed as 0-1979 (the year he was found). There are many things unknown about this doe, who was only skeletal remains by the time he was found. John was discovered by hunters in the woods, at these GPS coordinates (30.478340N , -95.247087W ). There aren't any exclusions to his case. The only image of his items are the shoes found, that as listed on the autopsy report are said to be green, but brown in the photo. John had two pairs of pants, one green, and one blue with stripes. He also had a short sleeve green shirt.

The second man was found on December 11th, 1983. There aren't exclusions to his case, and he was also found in San Jacinto County. He is listed as having been anywhere from 20-40 years old, white, and his height, weight, and time of death is uncertain. John doe is listed as potentially dying anywhere from 0-1983, potentially dead for one year. John was also found in a wooded area in a hunting area, that is located in a national forest. The GPS coordinates are: 30.008166N , -95.103836W. His remains were unrecognizable, with limbs missing. It is unknown what his hair or eye color were, and there aren't any accessories found with the body.

Floradean Walker

Floradean Walker, maiden name Hawes, was born somewhere around 1926-1926, give or take a year or so. She was 5'7", 135 pounds, with red auburn hair, and green eyes. She is listed as white, left handed and went by the name Pat. Pat was one of 7 children, and from Missouri. In March 1950, she married a man named Wesley E Walker, in Hext.

Floradean went missing in, 1951 from Hext, Texas, though the exact date of last contact is unknown. According to namus, she was likely last contacted around Spring or Fall of what I assume to have been 1950. There have been 21 exclusions to her case. There is very little information beyond this.

AJ and Myrisha Campbell

AJ and Myrisha Campbell were a set of siblings that went missing on September 6th, 1958 from Goliad, Texas. Myrisha was 3 years old at the time, 2'6", and 28 pounds. She had blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair, though it is noted that it was a very dark blonde. She was last seen wearing a pink dress with puffed sleeves and a Peter Pan collar, pink socks, and white buckle shoes.

AJ, Archie Jackson Junior, was less than a year old at the time, 2'2", and 25 pounds. He notably had clubbed thumbs, and a birthmark on this eyelid and lower lip. He was last seen wearing a blue and white checked shirt with a dark blue collar and yellow diaper. He had blue eyes and strawberry blond hair, styled as a burr cut.

The children lived with their mother, Jewel Bernay Campbell, and on September 6th, their father, AJ Senior, took them for a ride and never returned them. Jewel and AJ Senior had been married for 8 years before leaving him. He was very abusive towards Jewel. They originally lived in Fort Worth, but when they separated, she went to Goliad with the children, taking a teaching job. AJ Senior had court ordered visitations with the kids on Saturdays, of which is when they disappeared. He took the children at 9 am and was supposed to bring them back by 3. The car that they were seen in was a 2 door 1956 Chevy Tudor, with an unknown VIN. The base body was pink with a charcoal overlay, and license plate number MA-9996. Expiration was dated for 1959.

The last person to see the children other than their father was William Randle Jr, an acquaintance of AJ senior. William Randle stated that he and senior picked up the children in Goliad, then drove away in the Chevy. They went through Curero, and Gonzales, stopping along the way to pick up two large cans of lard. Once 3 miles or so outside of Goliad, senior asked William Randle to stop the car because he wanted to see a friend. Randle stepped out the car, and senior drove away with the kids in the car. He returned about 30-40 minutes later, the children no longer with him. AJ senior stated that he went to visit his brother in law, but they had a fight, and he left the children with another relative. Senior seemed nervous and agitated at the time, asking if there was any blood on him, and warned William Randle to tell no-one about the fight. Randle and senior then drove to San Antonio, then separated. Senior was supposed to meet Randle at a bus station the next day around midnight to return the car, but he never showed up. William Randle took a bus to Fort Worth, then reported his car stolen.

The next day, Senior spoke to a Forth Worth minister on the phone and implied that he killed the children, saying that they were "at rest with the world", and that he was going to kill himself. On September 7th, 1958, Senior's body was found inside William Randle's car on a rural road outside Austin, Texas. He had shot himself in the head with a new 16 gague shotgun, his death was ruled a suicide. He was buried in Alexander City Cemetery in Alabama. Senior left a note address to Jewel. He stated that he had buried both children, and that he loved the children and he loved Jewel, and hoped that she would be happy. There was no indication of the children's whereabouts, and no trace of them could be found.

Jewel stated, "I don't believe the note at all, because it was very difficult for him to tell the truth. I really do feel that they are alive...they may want to find me, too, and I know that". Senior was described as a smooth talker when alive. A massive man hunt was launched for the children with news article headlines stating "Father Kills Self; Two Tots Missing" and "100-Man Posse Continues Search for 2 Missing Tots".

After Senior's death, Jewel remarried and took on the name Robertson, later on having more children. Jewel's children, Regina Meynig and Phil Robertson, have keep up the search for their brother and sister, hoping that they may be located. They believe there's a chance that the kids may have been sold to someone and may still be alive somewhere. There are reports that Phil Robertson found info of a man with the same name and birthday as AJ junior, but there aren't any records of the man past the early to mid 90's.

Phil stated, "The problem is that no one knows where this guy is now. We don't know if he's an impostor or stolen identity or if he is indeed my brother....it leaves the door open that the kids may have not been murdered..that they may still be out there." "There's not a day that I don't think of them, of the children. But I try to keep a positive outlook because I know that God has a plan for our lives, and I just have to live by that." Jewel stated. In 2013, Jewel passed away at the age of 84. She is buried in the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.

There have been 20 exclusions for AJ, and 5 for Myrisha. The only question I have is, did Jewel keep in contact with Senior's family after the children went missing? Nothing ever seems to go over whether if the Campbell family was ever questioned or knew anything. If the children are still alive somewhere it could be possible that he gave them to someone that may have taken them to Alabama where he was from. This is just conjecture though.

2022 Acura MDX Unveiled and 2021 Honda Accord Arrives at Dealers

2022 Acura MDX

After weeks of teasing us, the wraps are finally of the 2022 Acura MDX. When it hits showrooms in February 2021, the fourth generation MDX will be sitting on an all-new platform with a double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear axle. Go power comes from a retuned version of the old faithful 3.5L V6 (now at 290 hp. and 267 lb.-ft. of torque) while the Type S gets the new 355 horsepower 3.0L turbocharged V6. Both mills are mated to a 10-speed automatic and Acura’s 4th generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system with driver selectable driving modes.

The new ride is 7cm longer, 3.5cm wider but does sit 0.8 cm lower than the previous model. Sharp-eyed fans will notice the extended hood, giving the MDX a more muscular look.  Nineteen-inch wheels are now standard while the Type S wears 21” rubber and is stopped by larger Brembo front calipers.

Judging by the photo of the second row seat, it looks ultra comfortable. As you can imagine, Acura filled the MDX with luxury appointments including a 16-speaker, 710 watt ELS Studio 3D audio system, a panoramic sunroof, 12.3” center display. Wireless charging, a removable second row seat (why?) anda slew of techno wizardry including Amazon Alexa are standard

 2021 Honda Accord

A few days back Honda Canada unveiled the 2021 Accord that should be reaching you local dealership by the time you read this.  The normally aspirated Accord gets a facelift with a wider grille with new LED headlights flanking it. Hondaphiles will probably notice the new, smaller openings for the fog lights. There’s a new alloy wheel for the EX-L and Touring trim lines. Sonic grey paint is also a new colour pallet for the Accord.

We Canucks get a Canadian exclusive SE version (pictures above) –which is the entry-level trim. But while the PR jargon reads adds premium features, a quick look at the goodie package reveals the absentia of must haves for a Canadian exclusive, namely heated seats and steering wheel. Come on Honda!

Mechanically speaking, two engines are available; a 1.5 litre turbocharged unit with 192 horses and like number of torque, mated to a Continuously variable Trans (CVT) and a 252 horse, turbocharged 2.0L with a 10-speed automatic doling out 272 lb.-ft.  In between you’ll find the Hybrid rendition with 212 horses and an impressive 232 lb.-ft. of torque.
