2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 review: A rough-and-tumble midsize truck

2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 review: A rough-and-tumble midsize truck
Not everyone loves the Colorado ZR2’s updated grille, but it’s certainly more aggressive than before.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The Chevrolet Colorado is an oldie but a goodie. Yeah, this midsize truck feels outdated, but despite a few deficits here and there it remains a solid option in a segment rife with less-than-stellar competitors. If you need enhanced off-road capability or the open-bed hauling convenience only a pickup truck can offer, but don’t want or need a full-size rig, this Chevy is a decent choice.
Like
Manageable dimensions
Decent performance
Off-road hardware
Don’t Like
Full-size pickup fuel economy
V6 could be smoother
Annoying rock rails
To keep things fresh, the Colorado received a few enhancements for 2021. Mainline models gain a reworked — and arguably more handsome — front end, an 8-inch infotainment screen is standard on the LT trim and higher and 17-inch wheels are now included at no extra charge. The off-road-ready ZR2 model features similar improvements, though its face is noticeably more aggressive, looking somewhat like the boxy Silverado 1500’s prow, for better or worse. Finally, three new exterior colors are available across the range including Cherry Red Tintcoat, which is what you see here.
What sets the ZR2 apart from lesser Colorados is its off-road hardware. The suspension benefits from a 2-inch lift and the track, both front and rear, is 3.5 inches wider. Keeping things under control while bombing through the desert, clambering over boulders or just cruising your local Home Depot parking lot is a set of Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve dampers. These shocks help manage the Colorado ZR2’s starchy springs, which deliver a firm on-road ride. While the truck laughs at pothole impacts and large bumps, you feel practically every expansion joint on the highway. Its Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires are mounted on stylish, multicolor 17-inch wheels and should provide ample grip while trail-bashing, even if they broadcast plenty of noise on pavement.
The Colorado is offered with three different engines, two of which are available in the ZR2. This example features the 3.6-liter gasoline V6, which cranks out 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. For all you compression-ignition aficionados out there, a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel is offered. Lower-trim Colorados can be had with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, though it’s probably best to avoid this malnourished option. Matched to a quick-witted and polished eight-speed automatic transmission, the V6 has no trouble moving this midsize truck with reasonable authority. The turbocharged Ford Ranger may have more low-end grunt and a Honda Ridgeline’s V6 might be smoother, but this Chevy’s engine gets the job done with little fanfare.
The Colorado may be more maneuverable than a full-size truck, but it’s no more efficient. As it sits, this example is rated at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 18 mpg highway. Combined, it should return 17 mpg, a figure I topped by about 0.4 mpg in real-world driving. It’s always great when you can exceed a vehicle’s combined fuel-economy rating without even trying, though this Chevy should probably be more efficient than it is. I mean, a Silverado 1500 TrailBoss with the top-dog 6.2-liter V8 has the same combined fuel economy score and it even beats the Colorado on the highway, returning an advertised 19 mpg. What’s the point of getting a midsize truck if a traditional half-ton is more economical?
It can feel a little buzzy at times, but this 3.6-liter V6 engine gets the job done.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
If you tow or haul significant loads on the reg, you’ll probably also want a burlier truck than this Chevy. The Colorado ZR2’s maximum payload rating is just 1,350 pounds and it can only drag up to 5,000 pounds. The Ranger and Jeep Gladiator’s peak figures easily eclipse the Chevy’s — hell, the car-based Ridgeline can haul 233 pounds more, even if its towing capacity is the same. It is worth noting, however, that non-ZR2 Colorados are more capable. Their maximum payload rating is a more-competitive 1,550 pounds and they can tow up to 7,700 pounds when fitted with the diesel engine.
When it’s time to go trail-bashing, the ZR2 has a leg up over all of its midsize rivals except, perhaps, the Gladiator. Locking differentials front and rear help it get out of tough situations. It’s also graced with plenty of underbody shielding and other features like hill-descent control. Rock rails along each sill are great for protecting the body from jagged terrain, though coupled with that elevated ride height they make getting into and out of this truck challenging if you don’t want to soil your pant legs with dirt or mud. A pair of bright red recovery hooks punctuates the ZR2’s front end and is at the ready should you get in too deep while off-roading.
The ZR2 is available with a variety of appearance-enhancing options groups, but if additional capability is what you crave, consider the $5,750 Bison package. This upgrade turns an already capable truck into a real mountain goat. It gets you a bunch of kit from American Expedition Vehicles including a special front bumper with provisions to mount a winch, boron-steel skid plates for added underbody protection, unique fender flares, special 17-inch wheels and more.
The Colorado’s interior is a no-frills zone.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The Chevy Colorado’s fundamentals are mostly impressive, but its interior and tech are what bely its advanced age. For better or worse, this truck’s interior is basically the same as it was five or six years ago, which means you get plenty of so-so hard plastics and leather that feels more like vinyl than anything shucked off a living creature. The dashboard’s overall layout is also as conservative as a Southern Baptist, with no frills or interesting design flourishes to be had. The advantage of this simple, honest layout, however, is that all the secondary buttons and knobs are easy to reach and see, with the climate controls being mounted up high and the seat-heater switches in an obvious place.
The Colorado is comfortable, with the front chairs adjusting nicely to accommodate taller folks, even if the cushions are quite flat. The crew-cab body’s rear bench seat is a bit on the upright side, par for the midsize-truck course, but it can fit a couple of 6-foot-tall adults without much trouble. The lower cushions also flip up, revealing a storage cubby for stashing things away from prying eyes.
These Multimatic dampers help make the ZR2 model an accomplished off-roader.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Like its overall interior design, this truck’s tech is behind the times. Sure, my tester’s 8-inch dashboard screen is nice enough, home to a speedy and clean infotainment system that’s a pleasure to use, but integrated navigation costs an additional $995, even on the high-end ZR2 model. Fortunately, if you don’t feel like shelling out an extra grand of hard-earned scratch, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are ready, willing and standard across the board.
But no matter how much you spend, you cannot get push-button start in this truck. Instead, every Colorado comes with an old-fashioned stick-and-twist key. For you kids that aren’t familiar, you take a thin piece of metal, jab it into a receptacle on the steering column and turn it to fire the engine up. Similarly, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane centering are not offered, but at least keyless entry is available on even the most-basic Work Truck model, and you can get the Colorado with remote start.
Despite its years, the Colorado is still a good midsize truck.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Speaking of money, a base, rear-wheel-drive version of this truck with the four-cylinder engine starts at 26 grand and change. With many more features and a crew-cab body, the Colorado ZR2 tested here checks out for a much-steeper $44,890, including $1,195 in destination fees. The sole option padding that figure is the paint job, which costs $495.
The Chevy Colorado’s gray hairs are certainly showing, but despite its age, this truck remains a good option — one I prefer in some ways to the Ranger and Gladiator. For general-purpose use, the Honda Ridgeline is still the best all-around midsize pickup in my humble opinion, but if you want something with more rugged looks and a lot more off-road capability, the ZR2 could fit the bill.

Does the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado Look Tough Enough to You?
Eager to explore rocky trails and sandy dunes in a midsize pickup truck? The Chevrolet Colorado is a solid option, and now emerging from a cloud of wispy desert dust is the updated 2021 version
Changes focus on appearance; mechanical specifications remain the same. Even the diesel remains on the menu, per a Chevy spokesperson. The new looks add aggression to bring the 2021 Colorado more in line with bigger Chevrolet trucks and help it stand out at trailheads or in the hardware store parking lot.
WT, LT, and Z71 trims get updated front fascia with a new layout, logos, and a faux skid plate. The first two get a Chevy bowtie badge finished in gold, while the off-road-oriented Z71 trim will have a black bowtie. Thanks to a redesigned front air dam, the mid-size Chevy truck also benefits from an improved approach angle (the piece is removable for those in need of an even better approach angle). All Colorados get a new tailgate with embossed Chevrolet lettering, much like what’s seen on the Silverado 1500 and Silverado 2500 HD.
The top-level, trail-tuned Colorado ZR2 gets additional revisions to signify its toughness. Like before, a trim-specific fascia leaves the front tires more exposed for a maximized approach angle. For 2021, the grille is wider and more open, featuring cut out Chevrolet lettering to allow a bit of extra airflow. Skid plates and red tow hooks help signify its purpose—as if the lifted suspension, wider track, and huge knobby tires weren’t enough. Locking differentials and phenomenal DSSV dampers from Multimatic carry over.
Also new and exclusive to the Z71 and ZR2 is a very in-vogue “Sand Dune Metallic” beige exterior paint, which should only look better the dustier it gets.
Previously a comparison test winner, we’re counting on the refreshed Colorado to be just as likable as its earlier versions. That said, plan on paying a little more for the 2021 truck, which loses its base trim and now starts at $26,395—an increase of almost $4,000 over the cheapest 2020 model.
This story has been updated with new info and pictures related to the regular, non-ZR2 Colorado.

2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2: Costs, Facts, And Figures | HotCars
New Post has been published on https://coolcarsnews.com/2021-chevy-colorado-zr2-costs-facts-and-figures-hotcars/
2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2: Costs, Facts, And Figures | HotCars
Chevrolet Colorado has been a favorite amongst people looking to buy a midsize pickup truck. That said, competition is robbing its sales with the likes of the Toyota Tacoma getting more market share. Others like the Nissan Frontier and the Ford Ranger are also in the minds of potential buyers.
But if you do have enough budget to spend on one of the more off-road centric versions of a truck, why hold back? Inevitably you’d have to end up choosing one and it’s quite hard given the number of offerings currently available. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 is more of an off-road specific build than a daily. With an impressive fanbase the Colorado soldiers on whilst its corporate sibling, the GMC Canyon caters to a different clientele.
For 2021, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 remains relatively unchanged with a few minor tweaks across the exterior and interior. With prices starting at $41,600, is the midsize Chevrolet pickup all show and no go? Let’s find out.
The 2021 Colorado has retained its engine options as before. The Chevy offers a choice of either a diesel-powered 2.8-liter Duramax engine and an optional 3.6-liter gasoline V6. Power figures are rated at 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque for the V6 Colorado. The Duramax diesel is good for 186 horsepower and a whopping 369 lb-ft of torque, ideal for someone looking to exploit the road less traveled. In terms of transmission, the Chevy gets a 6-speed auto for the inline-four diesel and an 8-speed automatic for the V6. The Colorado ZR2 gets both front and rear locking diffs plus a switchable four-wheel-drive system making it more versatile across demanding scenarios. Towing capabilities of the 2021 Chevy Colorado remain impressive at 7000 pounds for the V6 and 7700 pounds with the diesel when equipped with the Trailer package.
Although the Duramax diesel has less oomph on paper, the amount of twist it generates surpasses whatever the gasoline engine offers. The choice of which engine should you equip relies on what you expect from the ZR2. For instance, if you’re a serious off-road junkie, the torquey diesel should prove ideal, however, if your commute is more on the pavement, opting for the better-refined gasoline engine should be appropriate. Irrespective of engines, on the road, the Colorado is surprisingly well behaved and handles corners with minimal roll. Further complementing its on-road abilities is the lack of judder or flex usually exhibited by body-on-frame designs.
RELATED: 10 American Trucks We'd Be Embarrassed To Drive
Notable exterior changes for 2021 include a revised grille for the Colorado ZR2. You get a unique grille design with layered protrusions that give the front fascia a dominating appeal. A similar design can be seen on Chevy’s larger Silverado making the design ethos cohesive across the range. Also new for 2021 is the “Chevrolet” badge spelled out and the “bow-tie” being offset to the side. Instead of a solid design, the logo is actually hollowed out in order to improve airflow, Chevy calls it the “flow tie.” The rest of the design is largely familiar to the outgoing model with similar projector headlamps, which, is more of a sore thumb by 2021 standards.
That said, the contoured front bumper design enhances the overall presence since it exposes a portion of the massive front tires. The side profile is reminiscent of previous Colorados and so is the rear tailgate. Side exit exhaust further adds to the drama along with a fixed spare wheel on top of the bed and adjustable auxiliary lights mounted on the exterior roll cage. Interiors have no noteworthy highlights and carry over the existing design, which is really a shame given most of its competitors offer a slightly better interior ambiance. As standard, the 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Every other function seems rudimentary and the available smartphone integration does improve the infotainment’s user interface. The lack of modern driver-assistance tech is also one of its shortfalls which we hope GM will be addressing in future models.
RELATED: Here Are The Top Mid-Size Pickup Trucks Of 2020
The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes at a starting price of $41,600 for the extended cab and $43,200 for the crew cab. In its ZR2 guise, the Chevy Colorado gets a host of accessories as standard. Painted stainless steel tubular rocker protectors and a full suite of skid plates along with off-road spec DSSV dampers are standard equipment. In addition to this, the ZR2 gets a 3.5-inches wider track, increased ride height of two-inches, and an optional snorkel. Wide Goodyear off-road spec tires are available for the ZR2. Couple that with its capable powertrain, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has enough oomph to get you through the gnarliest of terrains without much drama.

2020 Chevy Corvette C8.R, 2021 Land Rover Defender, SSC Tuatara: This Week's Top Photos
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=6383&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R race car spy shots Chevrolet’s redesigned Corvette is shaping up to be one mean beast. This week we saw the racing version of the mid-engine car, the C8.R, testing under the cover of darkness at Florida’s Sebring International Raceway. While the road car is expected on sale next year, the race car isn’t expected to be ready until 2020. 2021 Land Rover Defender spy shots – Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien Another vehicle spied this week was Land Rover’s redesigned Defender, in both five- and three-door body styles. The redesign is the first for the iconic nameplate since the original was launched more than three decades ago, and judging by the spy shots Land Rover has a very handsome design for its latest go-anywhere SUV. The only 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake ever produced Muscle car fans will soon have a chance to own a significant piece of Ford Mustang history. The original 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Snake, the only one ever built, is coming up for auction. This is the Goodyear demonstrator that was powered by a 427-cubic inch race engine lifted from a Le Mans-winning Ford GT40, and for the right price it can be yours. 2018 Ford Mustang GT (Matt Dayka/For Motor Authority) We’re quite sure there will be plenty of bidders for that piece of Mustang history, given the significance of the nameplate to America. We recently learned just what that significance entailed, as over two months the Motor Authority editorial team took a modern Mustang GT for an immersive road trip across the United States. In the process, we scratched the surface of what the pony car means to the country. 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison We also took a spin in the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison this week and found the added off-road goods made the mid-size pickup truck noticeably more formidable than the standard ZR2. But if it’s a full-size truck that you need, you’ll be interested in the redesigned 2020 Silverado Heavy Duty that Chevy revealed this week. 2020 Acura TLX Type S spy shots – Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien Sport sedan fans can look forward to the 2020 Acura TLX Type S, which stepped out in front of the camera for the first time this week. We’ll likely see the car make its market launch in the second half of 2019. It’s confirmed to be coming with a turbocharged V-6, most likely related to the unit in the NSX supercar. SSC Tuatara pre-production prototype Another vehicle due on the market in 2019 is SSC’s long-awaited Tuatara hypercar, a pre-production version of which was spotted testing on public roads. SSC is confident of reaching a top speed of 300 mph. To get there, the Tuatara will rely on a bespoke 5.9-liter V-8 twin-turbocharged to the tune of 1,350 horsepower on regular gas and as much as 1,750 hp with E85. Koenigsegg Regera in bare carbon fiber – Image via Keno Zache Photography/Carage SSC rival Koenigsegg this week showed off a Regera finished in what the Swedish company calls Koenigsegg Naked Carbon, or KNC for short. As the name suggests, this is a pure carbon finish that’s devoid of any clear coat. In fact, even the thin epoxy that normally coats autoclaved cured carbon fiber has been carefully removed by sanding and polishing, resulting in a surface that’s not only tough but also has a unique carbon-metallic look. What The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado Is All About?
The Chevrolet Colorado is General Motors highest-capable midsize pickup truck, and for the 2021 Chevrolet year, it will present a new look to the trails and streets. The car will trade the Chevy "bowtie" emblem on its rear for "Chevrolet" embossed across the tailgate.
The move brings Colorado more in line with its bigger Silverado sibling and takes back to trucks in the 80s and 90s that also presented the brand name spelled out across the gate.
The Chevrolet Colorado truck goes under the knife for the 2021 model year. It comes with revisions to its front and rear ends, including a new bowtie badge on its grille and the word "Chevrolet" embossed across its tailgate.
Colorado models are equipped with a new appeal on the front end that will create a more visual difference between models. The center bar has redesigned that stretches across the lower bumper, off-road skid plates, and the front grille. The Colorado WT and LT get a new gold bowtie logo in the grille, while the Z71 gets a black one.
Chevrolet is tweaking the looks of the Colorado midsize pickup truck for 2021.
The hard-core ZR2 off-road model gets the most changes to differentiate it from the rest of the lineup, while the Z71, WT, and LT trims get smaller updates.
Chevrolet isn't spilling what's under updated Colorado's hood, but we expect the current crop of powertrains to carryover. This includes today’s 186-hp turbodiesel 2.8-liter inline-four, 200-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-four, and 308-hp 3.6-liter V6 engines.
There's no pricing available yet.
The 2021 Colorado profits from a few appearance tweaks meant to vary the off-road-oriented ZR2 and Z71 trims from the rest of the lineups.
These appearance changes round out the upgrades, as there are not any mechanical differences for the 2021 model. Chevy hasn't yet released pricing yet, but says it will come in due time before the trucks go on sale sometime next year.
The 2021 Colorado lineup will feature greater design differentiation between trim levels, and The Colorado is currently offered with a 3.6-liter gasoline V6 making 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.8-liter turbodiesel inline-four, producing 186 hp and 369 lb-ft. Chevy also offers a 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine (with 200 hp and 191 lb-ft), but it's primarily aimed at fleet buyers.
The diesel's 7,700-pound maximum tow rating is currently the highest of any midsize truck.
To further vary, the Colorado's various trims, the truck's WT, LT, and Z71 trims boast a new grille and lower fascia design that's different from that of the butcher ZR2 trim. The off-road-ready trim is the standalone Colorado model to feature flow-through lettering in its grille.
The badging complements the ZR2's menacing lower fascia that seemingly blends the grille into the front bumper.
It’s unsure when will the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado goes live but through the inclinations it can be in early November. Pricing remains unannounced, but Chevrolet states its updated midsize pickup definitely has a revamped it into a sleek and more stylish manner.

Minor The base model won’t see many changes, but an even more hardcore off-road model could slot above the ZR2 in the lineup. Reportedly called the ZR2 Bison, this rock-stomping performance variant will likely build on the capabilities of the standard Colorado ZR2 with its own suspension tuning and better approach and departure angles. The current Colorado was named our Truck of the Year for 2015 and 2016.

Major The redesigned Silverado has a more brash exterior, and Chevy claims it weighs as much as 450 pounds less than the truck it replaces. Two engines join the lineup: a turbo-four and a turbodiesel I-6. The latter should be the most efficient option. Like its predecessor, the 2019 Silverado will be available in everything from a work truck to a luxury-oriented High Country model and an off-road variant called the Trail Boss.
Also Consider Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500

A redesigned truck should arrive soon and, like the Silverado 1500, could be significantly lighter than the truck it replaces. Expect a range of gas and diesel engine options to return, possibly with major updates to improve fuel efficiency and add power.

All-New After seven years away, the Ford Ranger midsize pickup returns to the U.S. with a slight design tweak to the foreign-market version. The truck will be available in SuperCab and SuperCrew versions; no word whether a diesel engine will be available. Our sources tell us not to expect the globally engineered Ranger Raptor to come to the U.S. before 2021 when the Ranger is redesigned.

Unchanged The 2017 Motor Trend Truck of the Year will get a midcycle refresh next year, which should include revisions to the front and rear ends and a switch to Ford’s 10-speed automatic. There’s also a rumor of a new 7.0-liter V-8. That updated truck will most likely be sold as a 2020 model, though, with the 2019 F-250, F-350, and F-450 carrying over essentially unchanged from last year.

It gains an updated infotainment system, an upgraded rearview camera, optional rear parking sensors, expanded availability of wireless charging and heated steering wheel features, and a new 17-inch wheel design. Like its Chevrolet Colorado twin, it can be configured with a crew cab and a short or long bed.

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado is a Tough-Looking Midsize Pickup
Eager to explore rocky trails and sandy dunes in a midsize pickup truck? The Chevrolet Colorado is a solid option, and now emerging from a cloud of wispy desert dust is the updated 2021 version
Changes focus on appearance; mechanical specifications remain the same. The new look adds aggression to bring the 2021 Colorado more in line with bigger Chevrolet trucks, and help it stand out at trailheads or in the hardware store parking lot.
WT, LT, and Z71 trims get updated front fascia with a new layout, logos, and skid plate. The first two get a Chevy bowtie badge finished in gold, while the off-road-oriented Z71 trim will have a black bowtie.
Previously a comparison test winner, we’re counting on the refreshed Colorado to be just as likeable as its earlier versions. Though pricing has not been announced, and the ZR2 won’t debut until the SEMA show in November, there’s already a competition-ready version of the new Colorado. It’s built up and ready to take on the 2019 Laughlin Desert Classic, an off-road race held in the sands of southern Nevada.
