2021 Cadillac XT5 review: Ordinary but agreeable
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2021-cadillac-xt5-review-ordinary-but-agreeable/
2021 Cadillac XT5 review: Ordinary but agreeable
The Cadillac XT5 is attractive… at least from this angle.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The XT5 is Cadillac’s midsize luxury utility vehicle, a versatile and cushy hauler that competes with rivals like the Lexus RX 350 and Lincoln Nautilus. To keep pace with these foes, and others, the XT5 was mildly enhanced last year, gaining a new turbocharged base engine, some updated tech and mildly tweaked styling, changes that continue forward for 2021. But while the XT5 is pleasant enough to drive and has a neatly trimmed cabin, the whole package feels a bit middle of the road in a segment where excellence is expected.
Like
Excellent infotainment system
Over-the-road refinement
Upscale interior
Don’t Like
Real-world fuel economy could be better
Sluggish climate controls
Frumpy proportions
This Sport-trim model features a fetching five-sided grille outlined in satin chrome and filled in with a black mesh texture. This prominent opening is flanked by LED headlamps, which are standard across the XT5 range. When viewed head-on, this vehicle is elegant, though, regrettably, the rest of its body is less attractive. If the XT5’s styling were one of the seven dwarves in Snow White, it’d be Dopey. The proportions seem off, which makes the whole thing look dull. With an oddly elevated hood and body that seems too tall and narrow, this Cadillac is a bit ungainly, reminding me of a smaller vehicle dressed in a fat suit.
But there is good news: None of that awkwardness carries through to the cabin. The XT5’s interior is beautifully designed and more comfortable than you might expect. With plenty of soft, semi-aniline leather along with a wrapped-and-stitched instrument panel, microfiber-suede headliner and fetching bronze-hued carbon-fiber trim, it’s attractive and upscale. These upgrades are all included in the $3,650 Platinum Package. The front bucket seats are supportive enough to maintain good posture yet they’re still supple, so your ass doesn’t fall asleep on longer drives. This Caddy’s backseat is great as well, with plenty of room for taller adults, plus the lower cushion is a good height above the floor and nicely angled for a natural seating position.
2021 Cadillac XT5 Sport AWD: Enjoyable if not exceptional
See all photos
Mounted up high where it’s easy to see and reach is the 8-inch multimedia screen. Not only does it look small on that big ol’ dashboard, it feels a bit cramped, too. You can practically get television-sized displays in some vehicles these days — including Cadillac’s own Escalade — which makes this screen seem all the more inadequate. Despite that size deficiency, the XT5’s infotainment system is a dream, being both intuitive and highly responsive. Embedded navigation is available for an extra cost, though Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported on even the most basic model. Both of these smartphone-mirroring technologies can connect wirelessly for greater convenience, which is especially nice if you’re running a bunch of errands, getting into and out of the vehicle frequently.
Aside from the screen itself, there’s a rotary dial on the center console right next to the volume knob. You can use this to cycle through the infotainment system’s menus if you want, though I never really do. For me, it’s easier to just use the touchscreen. Next to that control is the XT5’s silly electronic shifter, which can be fiddly and reminds me of an ancient Nokia cell phone. Pushbuttons or a rotary control would be preferable and likely free up more storage space on the console.
Arguably, the XT5’s greatest asset is its upscale, comfortable interior.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
One annoying aspect of this vehicle’s interior is the physical climate controls. The system is super slow to respond when adjusting the temperature. You can rapidly click the buttons or even hold them down, but the numbers still change at an agonizingly slow pace, 72… 73… 74… Luckily, there’s a redundant set of climate controls in the infotainment system, and these respond immediately.
When it comes to tech, this Cadillac has plenty of standard kit. Front and rear parking sensors, remote start and an ineffective lane-keeping system are a few of the items included free of charge. You also get heated front seats for no extra outlay, ditto for a high-definition backup camera. Along with a color head-up display, automatic parking assist and a handy rear-camera mirror, which provides a much broader field of view behind the vehicle, the $2,275 Enhanced Visibility and Technology Package includes an HD surround-vision camera system, which gives you a 360-degree view of the XT5, something that’s super helpful when squeezing into narrow parking spaces. Disappointingly, adaptive cruise control, a feature that’s standard on many much-more-affordable vehicles these days also costs extra, bundled with the $1,300 Driver Assist Package.
Speaking of driving, two engines are offered in the 2021 XT5. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is standard on Luxury and Premium Luxury trims, but Sport models come exclusively with a 3.6-liter V6 that’s rated at 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of twist. Smooth and unexpectedly snarly, this powerplant has no trouble motivating the XT5. A responsive and refined nine-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment, routing torque to either the front tires or all four if you opt for the available all-wheel-drive system, which is standard on Sport models. As for efficiency, I averaged around 20 miles per gallon in testing, a somewhat disappointing figure. It seems this Cadillac should do better since it’s not that big or heavy, plus it’s fitted with standard engine stop-start and the V6 has cylinder deactivation (fortunately, both technologies are pretty much seamless). But hey, at least that real-world fuel-economy figure is close to the XT5’s combined rating of 21 mpg. Around town, expect 18 mpg, on the highway it should return 26 mpg.
Yep, the proportions of this vehicle’s body are a little strange.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Separating Sport models from lesser XT5s, they come with an adaptive suspension with continuous damping control, a quicker steering ratio and 20-inch wheels. Despite those generously sized rollers, this Cadillac’s ride is firm and well controlled, but never harsh. The steering ratio is also reasonably quick, which makes the XT5 feel nimbler than you might expect, though as per usual, more road feel through the wheel would be appreciated.
Eschew all options and you can drive home in a 2021 Cadillac XT5 for just about $45,000, including $995 in delivery fees. That makes it a couple grand richer than an entry-level Lincoln Nautilus, or around $1,000 less than a base Lexus RX 350. Of course, the nicely optioned Sport model seen here is a good bit pricier than 45 grand, but its window sticker isn’t that crazy. Including the Platinum Package, night vision, optional 12-spoke wheels and a few other goodies it checks out for $68,765.
The XT5 Sport is refined and comfortable, pleasant to drive and versatile. Indeed, there’s a lot to like about this vehicle, even if some things about it are a bit annoying and the exterior styling is too frumpy. Hopefully Cadillac tries just a little harder when it redesigns this luxury utility vehicle in the future, so it can live up to its full potential.

5 Things the 2021 Lexus IS Can Learn from Its Predecessor
The crowded compact luxury sedan segment is filled with recently updated models from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo. Unlike its fresher rivals, the Lexus IS soldiers on with aging design, powertrains, architecture, and interior. The 2021 model year won’t bring the full redesign we hoped for, but we still expect to see major changes.
Driving the current IS for a week reminded us how the sedan has fallen behind the curve. Here are five things the 2021 Lexus IS can learn from its predecessor, plus a few things Lexus has already mastered.
Maximize interior space
Let’s hope the updated sedan feels more spacious than the current model. Not only does the cabin feel narrow, but trunk space is smaller than competitors at a paltry 10.8 cubic feet.
Carving out little storage compartments inside the cabin would greatly improve its utility. Many new cars have plenty of cubbies to store your phone and other items. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the IS, which has no storage solutions in its bulky center stack other than a tiny center console box. The cupholders are also quite small, and they’re positioned too far back for the driver to comfortably reach.
Want to be sporty? Then go all the way.
The IS 350 F Sport is billed as an athletic sedan, complete with special suspension tuning, a limited-slip rear differential, and sporty seats (with not enough padding). Our tester’s 3.5-liter V-6 engine produces a sonorous growl and a healthy 311 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. RWD models feature an eight-speed automatic, while AWD models stick with a six-speed automatic.
Unfortunately, the ride and handling don’t live up to the model’s sporty intentions. The car bounces over big bumps in the road, lacking the control you’d expect. Steering lacks the feedback it should have as an athletic sedan, even in the sharpest Sport S+ mode.
We’ve been told Lexus will update the chassis and suspension, and hopefully these changes address some of our gripes. The engines should carry over from the current model, however.
Ditch the mouse multimedia controller for a touchscreen
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: The finnicky mouse-like infotainment controller has got to go. Newer Lexus vehicles have upgraded to a touchpad similar to the one on your laptop, but it’s still not easy to use. The automaker is finally starting to embrace touchscreens with the new RX, and we can only hope the IS follows suit. Some new Lexuses have busy interiors with a cluttered array of controls, so we’re crossing our fingers that Lexus keeps things simple on the new interior.
Advanced tech is key
Smartphone connectivity is a make-or-break consideration for many car shoppers. Unfortunately, the Lexus IS offers neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto. Needless to say, the sedan has some catching up to do with its competitors.
Instead of smartphone connectivity, the Lexus IS has … a CD player. And an analog clock.
Need for a more streamlined design
We hope Lexus takes inspiration from its new vehicles to create a more streamlined look on the IS.
Lexus has long been criticized for its spindle grille. Love it or hate it, the gaping maw is the brand’s signature design feature, and isn’t going away anytime soon. New Lexus vehicles have a wider grille, but subtler design details around it so onlookers aren’t overwhelmed.
Take the Lexus RX as an example. It integrates its daytime running lights into the headlamps, providing a more cohesive look than the split-light design on the IS. As exhibited in our recent rendering, a front end with integrated headlights and less prominent vents would improve the overall look. We also hope the IS will lose its droopy rear end design and adopt the sleek body lines and slim taillights of the ES.
What we don’t want to change
The available four-cylinder engine is a bit underpowered, but we enjoy the smooth V-6 engine on our IS tester. It provides good power for all driving situations, from merging on the freeway to switching lanes. It might not be the most efficient engine, but we’re glad there’s a potent option in the lineup. We also appreciate that the car is nimble enough to maneuver into parking spots with ease and perform clean three-point turns. Driving around crowded cities is a breeze.
The Lexus IS already boasts great safety scores and plenty of safety technologies. All versions come standard with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, high-speed adaptive cruise control, and intelligent high beams. Other available safety features in the lineup include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, and adaptive front lights.

2020 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h Review: Pura Vida
When I first landed in Liberia, Costa Rica, to drive the updated 2020 Lexus RX, I wasn’t sure why the Japanese luxury brand had flown me and other journalists to Central America. About 40 minutes from the Liberia airport on the Pacific coast, the Papagayo Peninsula—with its stunning landscape, crystal-clear water, and white-sand beaches—was where we immersed ourselves in the Lexus world. The brand is celebrating its 30th anniversary and chose Costa Rica not only because of its stunning roads and natural splendor but also because of its deep connection with Purdy Motor, Toyota’s exclusive distributor in the country. Costa Rica was Lexus’ fifth Latin American market, and it has seen consistent growth since it began operations in 2013. Lexus’ first worldwide market was the U.S., and today the luxury brand continues its expansion across the globe with plans to launch in Mexico in 2021. It will have a presence in 90 countries by then. It’s within this landscape—both literally and metaphorically—that we drove Lexus’ most popular model, which is getting a midcycle refresh for the 2020 model year. Most of the changes are inside, where the crossover received a touchscreen, a few updates to its infotainment system, and six USB ports. Buyers can choose between the standard 8.0-inch or the available 12.3-inch touchscreen; the latter can be had as a split screen and has a higher resolution than the smaller screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa are compatible with the updated RX, and we found it very easy to use CarPlay through the touchpad. Although the touch functionality is new, the screen is a bit hard to reach for the driver given its location on top of the dash; it’s pretty easy to control from the front passenger’s seat, though. Despite the busy design, the RX’s interior is a nice place to sit. The seats are comfortable, and materials feel soft everywhere you touch. The commanding driver’s seat position provides good visibility.
The bigger three-row RX L continues for 2020 with second-row captain’s chairs that ease entry and exit for third-row passengers. The exterior updates are subtle: The iconic spindle grille is now bigger, the front and rear fascias have been redesigned, and the triple-beam LED headlights are slimmer. The standard 18-inch wheels sport a new design, and the 20-inch wheels on the Luxury trim have also received a style update. Things remain the same under the hood, but according to Lexus, changes to the suspension and welding have increased the vehicle’s rigidity. The shocks have been retuned, the anti-roll bars were swapped for stiffer ones, and the dampers were updated to provide a smoother ride. The RX 350 is still powered by a 295-hp, 267-lb-ft 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is still an option for the gas-only model; the unit we drove in the twisty, hilly roads overlooking the jaw-dropping Culebra Bay was fully loaded. The engine delivers enough power for an SUV of this size, but the transmission was always hunting for the highest gear. Thankfully, paddle shifters are standard for 2020, so the transmission holds gears longer when the shifter is in its sport position. The shifts are smooth, and body roll is controlled well, but we’ll need to spend more time with it to give you a full report.
During our drive we also got behind the wheel of the RX 450h, which is still propelled by the 3.5-liter V-6 mated to an electric motor and a CVT that sends power to all four wheels. The 308 hp make a huge difference compared with the “regular” engine—we found the hybrid to be more energetic. Whether we were driving up steep hills or taking sharp corners, the RX 450h was more fun to drive. It also felt agile when we stepped on the gas and happily passed slower cars on the two-lane road. After this short drive, we’d definitely go with the hybrid. We’ll get you deeper driving impressions once we have a chance to spend more time with it. The F Sport package continues for 2020, and now it can be split into two. The top-of-the-line F Sport Performance package adds the active variable suspension from the Lexus LC, as well as a cold air intake, active sound control, electric power steering, and a heated steering wheel. The standard F Sport package comes with sportier dampers and a drive mode selector with Sport+. The RX F Sport also offers red leather seats, more bolstering, and an F Sport badge on the wheel. Another update for 2020 is the addition of Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which is now standard across the board. Thanks to the changes in the pre-collision system, every RX can now detect cyclists during the day and pedestrians at night, something new for this model year. Road Sign Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are also new, but the Tico roads we drove on didn’t have any lane marks, so we couldn’t really try this feature.
Lexus hasn’t announced pricing, but expect to pay about the same as the 2019 Lexus RX 350, which starts at $44,845. The Lexus RX won our very first SUV of the Year award back in 1999, and it’s a pioneer in the crossover segment, becoming the first unibody SUV that delivered a “carlike” ride with the seating position and interior space of an SUV. Since then, it has thrived in the segment, becoming Lexus’ most popular model by far, surpassing all of the brand’s sedan sales combined. With its updated styling, better technology, advanced safety, and Pura Vida attitude, the 2020 Lexus RX will continue to be the brand’s sales leader when it arrives at dealers at the end of August. This much-needed update will bring a breeze of fresh air to the crossover. A full redesign is expected in the next two to three years. The post 2020 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h Review: Pura Vida appeared first on MotorTrend. Read the full article
