The feature was made available with recent software update, but only for company’s 2 flagship models
IQ Option · Jan 24, 2022 5:22 AM
Abstract:Tesla has started rolling out its Active Road Noise Reduction feature for the new Model S WikiFX and Model X. The function allows the cabin to be quieter when the vehicle is driving over rough surfaces. The feature was introduced as part of software update 2021.44.5.
Tumblr media
Tesla has started rolling out its Active Road Noise Reduction feature for the new Model S and Model X. The function allows the cabin to be quieter when the vehicle is driving over rough surfaces. The feature was introduced as part of software update 2021.44.5.
One of the new pieces of hardware that Tesla installed in the refreshed Model S and Model X is a pair of active noise cancelling microphones WikiFX embedded in the two front seats. They werent used until now, but with a recent software update, 2021.44.5, Tesla added a feature with a self-explanatory name, called Active Road Noise Reduction, and so they are finally used.
The following are the features Release Notes: “Your vehicle now has the ability to actively reduce low-frequency road noise while driving on rough surfaces. To accomplish this, the system uses the seat microphones to measure the noise in the cabin, then generates anti-noise through the speakers to create quiet zones around the occupants. To access, tap Audio Settings > Options > Active Road Noise Reduction.”
The new microphones can pick up all the road noise that makes its way into the cabin and then WikiFX anti-noise, as Tesla calls it in the release notes for the latest update. Tesla also says that through using the audio systems speakers, the vehicle is able to create quiet zones around the passengers.
The recent improvements of Active noise cancelling in cars is actually nothing new and it‘s been available on many models for quite a few years. Cars like the Lexus LS, Cadillac XTS, Infiniti Q60, Lincoln Continental and even the Honda Accord have this feature, but it’s actually far more common than you might think. But does it really make a difference, and if it does, how perceivable is it? Well, being a brand new feature on a Tesla, owners of models that have the feature were bound to test it, record their test and then post it on YouTube. Surprisingly, when we searched, we only found one video that shows Active Road Noise Reduction in action was uploaded by Michael Hopwood.
Tesla emphasizes in his video‘s description that it is ’definitely not noise cancellation at this point and also proceeds to describe his vehicle, which is a 2021 Model S Long Range riding on 19-inch wheels wrapped in Continental Pro Contact all season tires.
The Tesla Update 2021.44.5 also adds additional features, such as driver profiles, driver door unlock mode, separate control for rear climate functions in the refreshed Model S and X and Tesla also says it has improved Supercharging for some vehicles, but it did not say which ones this applies to. It should be noted that Active Road Noise Reduction would only be made available for Tesla‘s flagship vehicles — the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. This is because the feature is hardware-related, with Tesla installing Active Noise Canceling Microphones in the vehicles’ front seats as part of the Model S and Model Xs WikiFX interior refresh. Such components are currently not installed in the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover. The two smaller models will need to be fitted with microphones for that and since they are less refined on the move than the larger models, perhaps they may actually need it more.
Considering that this is only the initial release of Tesla‘s Active Road Noise Reduction feature, it is all but certain that the function will get significantly better WikiFX in the near future. Tesla is known to refine its vehicles’ features over time through over-the-air software updates, after all.

This electric concept previews Lexus's electrified future.
This electric concept previews Lexus's electrified future. Lexus was an early adopter of hybrids, having introduced the RX hybrid SUV in 2005 and offering hybrid variants of many of other models since—just like its parent, Toyota. Also like Toyota, Lexus seems to be dragging its feet a bit on battery electric vehicles (BEV); the luxury automaker's first effort, the UX-based UX300e, won't even be sold in America. But an ambitious turnaround is afoot, evidenced by the newly-revealed LF-Z Electrified concept. It previews Lexus's big plans to move to the front of the pack come 2025, the year by which they have promised all Lexus models will offer some sort of electrification.
But First, That Design
Let's start with the LF-Z Electrified's design, which is, er, different. Lexus's controversial hourglass-shaped spindle grille is gone—at least the grille part is—but the spindle shape is still very much echoed in the concept car's nose and extending well up into the hood. The LF-Z's body-side makes extensive use of creative surfacing to create a variety of visual planes. The look is intriguing, but it's hard not to be distracted by the side view of the greenhouse, which comes to a sharp peak over the back seat. At least no one will have reason to complain about second-row headroom.
Out back, the LF-Z has a full-width taillight and an arrangement of lines and creases that remind us of the first-generation Toyota Mirai. It's not an unpleasant look, though we're at a loss to explain the massive dorsal fin, which looks like a satellite radio antenna exposed to gamma radiation in an experiment gone wrong.
And while we like the way "LEXUS" is spelled out across the taillight, does Lexus really plan to put "Electrified" in illuminated letters across the rump of its future cars? It's confusing—we're already having a hard time discerning electrified (gas-hybrid) cars from pure electrics like the LF-Z—and the treatment looks rather silly.
The interior, however, is pretty sharp—not least of all because it has a yoke in place of a steering wheel. (Assuming the LF-Z Electrified has been in the works for a while, it must have really burned Lexus' butter when Tesla stole its thunder on that.) The yoke connects to a drive-by-wire steering system, which allows on-the-fly changes to the steering ratio. Infiniti already does this with its Direct Adaptive Steering, but Lexus is looking to take things to another extreme. A Lexus video depicts a driver taking a car through the slalom without turning the wheel yoke much more than 90 degrees from center.
We also noticed a simplified interior layout, which is designed to concentrate the flow of information to the driver. We like what's on the center console—it appears to be a dial-style shifter—and liked even more what we didn't see, which is that dastardly touch-pad infotainment controller found in numerous Lexus models in recent years. Lexus has been adding more straightforward touch-screen functionality to their cars (like the 2021 LS), and if that, plus the concept interior, sounds the death-knell for that pad, no one will be better pleased than us.
The goings-on under the bodywork is intriguing as well. Lexus says the LF-Z concept uses a drive system called Direct-4, which allows two motors to infinitely vary the power to each of the four wheels. Between Direct-4 and a drive-by-wire steering system, Lexus says the LF-Z is better able to go in the direction the driver wants. The steering system can consider not just how far the steering yoke is turned, but how quickly, for a better assessment of the driver's intentions. By controlling power at each axle as well as steering angle provides more options for getting the car to make the directional changes demanded by the driver.
Lexus says the LF-Z concept is powered by a 90-kWh lithium-ion battery, and it is targeting a range of 600 km (373 miles) for the concept on the optimistic European test cycle. (For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 uses an 82-kWh battery.) Lexus also improved aerodynamics, increased efficiency in the climate control system, and worked to reduce parasitic electrical losses in order to boost the vehicle's range.
So, when will we see the LF-Z Electrified? Well, the concept does not appear to presage a particular model, but rather a design language and technology road-map for future Lexus vehicles. How far in the future? Lexus won't commit to a specific date, but it said we should see both the styling and technology found in the LF-Z Electrified in production models by 2025. Hopefully, they won't say "Electrified" in big illuminated letters on their trunk lids.

2021 Lexus NX 300h isn't new, but it's still good
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2021-lexus-nx-300h-isnt-new-but-its-still-good/
2021 Lexus NX 300h isn't new, but it's still good
The current-generation NX might not be long for this world, but it’s still uniquely positioned as is.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
For 2021, Lexus hosted a key party of sorts for its 6-year-old NX compact crossover. Previously, you could get an NX hybrid and an NX F Sport, but you couldn’t combine the two. That makes the arrival of this NX 300h F Sport Black Line about as much of a surprise as Monday following Sunday, though it’s a special-edition model limited to 1,000 units. Even so, at its heart, the latest NX mashup is plenty comfortable and competent.
Like
Sharper looks than standard hybrid
Darn decent efficiency
Comfortable in daily use
Don’t Like
Expensive for an aging vehicle
Cursed infotainment
Why can’t they all look like this?
Honestly, the F Sport should be the NX’s de facto face. Not only is this mesh-style grille far more appealing than the standard one, the F Sport body kit adds some weight to the lower front bumper, which has a pretty aggressive upward angle on the regular NX 300h and looks like somebody forgot to draw in a chin. Throw in some F Sport-specific 18-inch alloy wheels and you’ve got a solid looker, even though the NX has been around for a bit now.
It might not carry the flashy looks of its newer, harder-edged Teutonic competition, but the 2021 Lexus NX 300h F Sport’s interior is still a damn fine place to spend time. Unique touches inside are limited to contrasting blue stitching, a heated steering wheel and aluminum pedals, but there’s no sense messing with success. The seats have superb cushioning and support, and the center console’s raised setup means glances take less time away from the road ahead. It’s a little old-school in that physical switchgear absolutely dominates the NX’s interior, but the controls have good tactility and are dead simple to use with very little distraction. Cubbies and stash spots abound, including my favorite one, nestled just ahead of the center armrest and covered by a small removable vanity mirror. The automotive world needs more weird little touches like that, where nobody’s really quite sure why it’s there. I mean, there’s still a mirror in the sun visor, so who’s it for? The back row?
Speaking of, some compact crossovers choose to sacrifice interior space in the name of aesthetics, but not the Lexus NX. It doesn’t have the flat, wagon-ish roof of, say, a BMW X1, but my 6-foot frame doesn’t have any issues in the back seats, and with almost 43 inches of legroom, I definitely have room to stretch the ol’ gams. If you’re just one person or have a small family, the NX’s 16.8 cubic feet of cargo space should be plenty, although the hybrid system takes up a bit of space, shrinking the total capacity down from 17.7 cubic feet in gas-only variants. While that’s more storage than the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class can muster up, it falls well behind competitors like the Audi Q3 (23.7 cubic feet) and BMW X1 (27.1 cubic feet).
Smoothness over sport
Lexus creates some of the quietest, smoothest-driving vehicles in the luxury segment, and even its second-littlest crossover really swings for the fences in this regard. While F Sport models do gain a sharper suspension, the NX Black Line is still among the most comfortable vehicles in the segment. Whatever bumps aren’t dispatched by the dampers transmit little movement to the cabin, and in traditional Lexus fashion, there’s a decent amount of sound-deadening material throughout the body, keeping most unwanted road noises at bay. Gobs of pedal modulation make limo stops a breeze, and the steering turns the car, which I imagine is the extent to which its future owners care about that.
It’s good that the brevity-averse 2021 Lexus NX 300h F Sport Black Line is a smooth operator, because it sure ain’t a quick one. Like all other NX hybrids, the Black Line gets its forward motion from a 2.5-liter inline-four mated to Lexus’ hybrid hardware for a net 194 horsepower. It’s a regular old hybrid, not a plug-in, so its battery is limited to a couple miles of electric-only operation at sub-highway speeds, but leaving the NX in Eco mode really puts that nickel-metal hydride to work. On one suburban jaunt, with speed limits never eclipsing 40 mph, I ran largely on electricity for a few dozen miles, resulting in an impressive 45 mpg. That’s an edge case, though — the EPA rates this NX variant at 33 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, which is OK for an electrified all-wheel-drive SUV, but I was able to beat both figures with little more than a light foot. The continuously variable transmission is so well tuned that I basically forget it exists, which is about all you can ask for.
There are driving modes beyond Eco, even though that is my clear favorite. Eco is all about efficiency, so throttle inputs are dulled and the powertrain does its best to be in its most economical range at all times. Normal, the default mode, has a firmer throttle response that does a better job of providing post-stoplight acceleration, but it eats into efficiency a bit. There’s a Sport mode, too, but why bother? Yes, the NX 300h F Sport does offer some semblance of sportiness, but it’s clear that the underlying Lexus still wants to be cool and collected as often as possible. The Black Line also includes Lexus’ fake-engine-sound synthesizer, which thankfully has a proper Off setting.
Lexus’ leather game is on point. Those seats are even more comfortable than they look.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Out, damned touchpad, out, I say!
One day, I won’t have to write about Lexus’ accursed infotainment system, which has been kicking around in various iterations for almost a decade now. Its current method of manipulation, a touchpad on the center console, remains as odd and unintuitive as the day it came out, as the cursor “snaps” to various parts of the screen while your finger tracks along. It’s hard to manipulate sitting still, nevertheless while driving.
An 8-inch screen, which is what my tester has, is standard and it’s fine, rocking the same old aesthetic Lexus has relied on for years. A 10.3-inch screen is available on other trims, which adds navigation, but it’s not standard on the Black Line, despite it being the most expensive NX variant available. Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still along for the ride no matter what. Just add touch capability, for crying out loud, it’s already available on the LS. Who cares if you have to move the screen closer so people can actually reach it? A second, smaller info display lives between the speedometer and power delivery gauge, relaying relevant information about tire pressures, fuel economy or the trip meter.
If there’s one corner of in-car tech that Lexus has down pat, it’s safety. All NX models come standard with the Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0 array of passive and active technologies. This bundle features lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning and full-speed adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are included in the NX Black Line, as well. Parent company Toyota has had plenty of time to refine these hands-on systems, and it shows in their operation.
I can only hope that the next generation of NX gets rid of this touchpad once and for all.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Down to brass tacks
In its press materials, Lexus says the NX Black Line prioritizes its customers’ desire for “exclusive styling and value,” but the latter claim is iffy, given that it’s the most expensive variant by base price, starting at $47,835 including destination. My tester rings in at $48,745 with some fripperies like door edge guards and illuminated doorsills, which is quite the pill to swallow for a compact luxury crossover that’s due for a replacement. But in context, it’s about on par with its competitors, all of which offer similar base prices and similar chances to load the cars up to high heaven with all manner of options.
The 2021 Lexus NX 300h F Sport Black Line’s hybrid powertrain and focus on proper old-school luxury help set it apart from the crowd. If what you’re after is comfort and efficiency, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better fit in the compact SUV segment.

2021 Lexus ES 350 F Sport is a cruiser at heart
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2021-lexus-es-350-f-sport-is-a-cruiser-at-heart/
2021 Lexus ES 350 F Sport is a cruiser at heart
The Black Line special edition looks great.
Steven Ewing/Roadshow
Now chugging along in its seventh generation, the ES sedan is a stalwart of the Lexus lineup. For 2021, there’s a new ES 250 all-wheel-drive model, as well as the ES 350 F Sport Black Line you see here. But don’t let those aggro looks fool you. Despite its sporty appearance, the ES 350 is a comfy-cozy cruiser above all.
Like
Sharp looks
Spacious and comfortable interior
Hushed highway ride
Don’t Like
Terrible infotainment system
Not particularly fun to drive
Rear seats don’t fold down
Lexus will only sell 1,500 Black Line special editions, a package that adds $850 to an ES 350’s bottom line. The unique Ultrasonic Blue Mica paint looks awesome, contrasting nicely with the black mirror caps and lip spoiler. Lexus’ corporate grille looks nice here, with its black finish and mesh insert. I also love the zig-zag cue of the LED headlights and the crisp, sharp taillights, which bring character to the rear. All told, this ES 350 is seriously handsome.
The ES 350 is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, and its 302 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque are ample for this sedan. A smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, putting power down via front-wheel drive.
Different drive modes are accessed on a little stalk on the right side of the gauge cluster. Sport S mode sharpens the throttle mapping and transmission shift logic, while Sport S Plus takes things a little further, tightening the steering and stiffening the adaptive dampers. Still, the ES 350 is hardly a sport sedan, exhibiting lots of body roll while cornering. The transmission is far too eager to upshift and doesn’t downshift under braking, meaning that even with its revamped shift pattern, it’s still laggy to kick down and deliver power.
On the other hand, driven easily and smoothly, the ES 350 is great. This Lexus sedan filters out engine and road noise, but if you give it the beans the V6 makes a surprisingly hearty noise. The steering is nicely weighted and confident, with a quick ratio for sharp turn-in. Overall, though, the ES 350 is just so damn comfortable. I could drive this thing for hours and hours on end.
Lexus’ interior quality is as excellent as ever.
Steven Ewing/Roadshow
The ES 350’s fuel economy is pretty average for the class, the EPA rating the sedan at 22 miles per gallon in the city, 31 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined. Six-cylinder examples of the Audi A6 and Genesis G80 aren’t as efficient, but the BMW 540i and Mercedes-Benz E450 do better.
Lexus’ Safety System 2.0 suite of driver-assistance technologies is standard on all trims. This package includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure alert and road sign recognition. My F Sport tester adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. During my testing, the forward-collision warning sounds its alarm for no reason on occasion, and the lane-tracing tech has a few disengagements. However, the adaptive cruise control works as expected, bringing the car to a full stop and keeping a safe distance while following at high speeds.
The tech that needs work is inside the cabin; Lexus’ Enform system continues to be a chore. An 8-inch multimedia display is standard but I’ve got the optional 12.3-inch screen with embedded navigation. This system doesn’t have a touchscreen like the updated Lexus LS. Instead, you’re forced to use that horrible trackpad that I’ve complained about for years, which is downright unpleasant to use — especially while driving. On top of that, Enform is poorly organized with lots of menus and submenus to navigate.
Ah, the touchpad. The horrible, horrible touchpad.
Steven Ewing/Roadshow
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, at least, and there are plenty of places to charge your phone. There are two USB-A ports in each row of seats and a wireless charging pad is optional.
Oh, and the ES’ backup camera is small, distorted and blurry. Come on, guys. It’s 2021.
This ES 350 tester is fully loaded with heated and cooled seats, and the whole interior is beautifully appointed with high levels of fit and finish. The center console is kind of small, as are the door pockets, but the trunk can hold 13.9 cubic feet of cargo, which is about the same as a BMW 5 Series. However, you can’t fold the rear seats down, so don’t try to haul longer items.
The ES isn’t sporty, but it’s a solid sedan.
Steven Ewing/Roadshow
The 2021 Lexus ES 350 starts at $41,025 including $1,025 for destination, and the F Sport costs $5,800 more. With the Black Line pack, embedded navigation, triple-beam LED headlights, the adaptive suspension and more, the test car you see here comes out to $54,070. Me? I’d skip a bunch of the options and still get a super nice example for around $47,000.
Despite its name, the ES 350 F Sport is not a sport sedan. But with its great looks, comfortable ride and lots of standard driver-assistance tech, if you aren’t looking for a thrill ride, it’s definitely worth a look.
