Bad infotainment tech on the base trim
The GLI sets itself apart from the standard Jetta with larger air intakes, a low front spoiler and unique side skirts. The grille takes some styling cues from the GTI with its honeycomb pattern and classic red accent stripe. The GLI sits 0.6 inches lower to the ground than the standard Jetta and has a unique rear bumper and diffuser, as well as dual chrome exhaust tips. But even with these sporty touches, the GLI still slides under the radar.
The Jetta GLI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine pushing out 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque — the same powertrain you’ll find in the GTI. The GLI comes with front-wheel drive, and while you can get a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, my tester has the six-speed manual. Score.
My Autobahn trim comes complete with the DCC adaptive damping system, with modes for Normal, Sport and Eco, as well as a Custom setting. DCC allows me to dial in that Custom configuration, with individual options for the damping, steering, drivetrain, engine sound, front differential and even climate controls.
However, I don’t think the Custom setting makes much of a difference. Despite trying out a bunch of different setups during my week with the car, the Normal and Sport modes work just fine. Much of my praise for the standard Sport setting is thanks to the limited-slip front differential that works with the GLI’s electronic differential lock. Torque goes to the front wheel with the most grip, there’s little to no understeer and wheelspin is nonexistent.
The 2.0-liter engine produces 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The base Jetta gets an old-school torsion-beam rear suspension, but the GLI upgrades that hardware to a multilink independent setup. Combined with the GLI’s beefier roll bars and stiffer springs, this sedan is definitely ready to play. It swiftly settles after pavement undulations, coming out of an off-camber turn with nary a hair out of place. The steering is quick, direct and weighty, though it could use a bit more in the way of feedback. The 13.4-inch vented front brakes are lifted from the Golf R hatchback, paired with 11.8-inch diameter brakes in the rear. These stoppers are solid, although I wish the pedal’s engagement point was just a tad higher.
The GLI is a blast on backroads, but it’s fine for daily commuting, too. Standard on the GLI are advanced driver’s aids such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. My top-level Autobahn trim goes further with lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control. Yes, adaptive cruise control works with a manual transmission, although only at higher speeds. There isn’t any kind of low-speed follow and once the GLI thinks it will stall, the system disengages and the driver takes over.
The Jetta GLI’s fuel economy is respectable, returning an EPA-estimated rating of 24 miles per gallon in the city, 33 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. Even after a week of decidedly aggressive driving, I’m still able to hit that 28-mpg average.
The interior is mostly fine, but lacks visual flair.

Inside, the GLI’s cabin tech is simple and straightforward. The standard infotainment setup uses a tiny 6.5-inch display, but the Autobahn bumps that up to a nicer 8.0-inch screen running VW’s latest MIB3 technology. This system can handle multiple Bluetooth phone pairings at once, and I love that the screen is angled towards the driver so it’s easy to see and reach. MIB3’s menus are laid out thoughtfully so there isn’t a big learning curve, either. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, and in addition to a wireless charging pad, there are three USB-C ports and a 12-volt outlet to keep your devices juiced.
The Autobahn trim has Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, a 10-inch customizable gauge cluster that gives the driver all kinds of information like vehicle data, driver-assistance feature status and audio and phone access. It can also be customized with different designs, including a full-screen navigation view. It’s not quite as fancy-pants as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, but it’s essentially the same idea, and one of my favorite car interior features.

It’s a bit of a bummer that the GLI isn’t offered with any quirky interior design touches like the GTI hatchback’s plaid seats. All you’ll find here is black cloth or optional leather with contrasting red stitching. The Jetta at least has a 10-color LED ambient lighting system that coordinates with your selected driving mode: white for Normal, red for Sport and blue for Eco. If that doesn’t suit your mood, you can choose your own colors, as well.
Like the standard Jetta, the GLI’s interior materials are good but not great. Some of my colleagues lament the cheaper plastics and too-soft seats, especially since the GTI’s cabin feels more premium by comparison. The sedan’s trunk is fairly spacious at 14.1 cubic feet, and my 5-foot, 9-inch frame fits just fine in the rear seat — my knees don’t touch the front seatbacks and my head doesn’t brush the roof.
As far as competitors go, you can still snag a Honda Civic Si, or the all-wheel-drive Mazda3 Turbo is a good option, though it’s more expensive. The new Hyundai Elantra N Line has a little less power than the GLI, but it’s also offered with a manual transmission and has some seriously cool design. The Subaru WRX is another alternative, but it’s getting a little old, and the Jetta is a nicer all-around car.
The GLI certainly flies under the radar.

The 2021 Jetta GLI starts at $27,340 including $995 for destination. The Autobahn is a $4,000 upcharge, and while I don’t think the customizable DCC chassis makes a big difference, the cabin tech is significantly better. All in, an Autobahn with the six-speed manual like this test car costs $32,335.
Of course, the GLI’s biggest competitor is the GTI sitting next to it in the VW showroom, and the Jetta undercuts its Golf equivalent by a few thousand dollars while still providing basically the same on-road thrills. The GTI’s hatchback design is a lot more practical, but the GLI feels like an altogether more grown-up package — though it’s still more than willing to get a little rowdy.

City 2013: versões, preços, detalhes, motor, desempenho e consumo

O City 2013 surgiu com algumas novidades, mas em realidade, o sedã compacto da Honda ficou mesmo é mais simples. A oferta do produto teve sua gama de versões reduzida com a extinção até da versão topo de linha EXL.
De oito opções, o City ficou apenas com quatro, cortando assim pela metade a oferta de versões do modelo compacto, sendo que apenas duas delas eram automáticas.
Segundo a Honda, o City 2013 recebera 344 mudanças, sendo que a mais perceptível era no visual, onde ganhara novos para-choques, grade atualizada, faróis mais afilados e lanternas repaginadas.
Também ganhara novas rodas de liga leve, assim como no interior, onde o cluster recebera computador de bordo, iluminação azul nos instrumentos e parte central do painel em grafite.
Outra mudança foi o aumento do tamanho do tanque – que é central até na geração nova – passando de 42 para 47 litros. Ainda em sua quinta geração, o Honda City ainda era uma novidade da marca japonesa com seus três anos de mercado.
Fabricado em Sumaré, interior de São Paulo, o sedã não era popular, atuando num segmento mais premium e compartilhando a plataforma com o Honda Fit, porém, sendo bem menor que o Honda Civic.
Desde a geração “Aria”, o City mescla sua base com o Fit, sendo que anteriormente, fora um hatchback compacto nas duas primeiras gerações, ainda nos anos 80 e início dos 90. O próprio nome já indicava sua proposta urbana.
Contudo, em meados dos anos 90, a Honda decidiu lançar um Civic simplificado com a plataforma da geração anterior e assim, com o fim do segundo City, renomeou o derivado do best seller da marca.
Esse terceiro Honda City nunca teve chance de vir ao Brasil devido ao Civic, diferente dos dois modelos anteriores, que teriam antecipado a marca japonesa no mercado nacional, ainda fechado nos anos 80.
Houve uma oportunidade, mas o Civic hatch seria a escolha na ocasião, mas não houve sucesso e a Honda ficou apenas nas motos de Manaus. Quando o Fit chegou ao Brasil em 2003, sua variante sedã era o Fit Aria.
Contudo, em alguns mercados, era necessário substituir o City III e isso aconteceu com o Aria, que essencialmente era um Fit em carroceria de três volumes. Sendo um carro de visual bem estranho, a Honda concluiu que não teria sucesso aqui.
Apesar disso, de alguma forma, ele antecipou parte das linhas do New Civic em 2006. Sem opção de trazer o City IV, a marca apenas aguardou o tempo passar e ele mudar de geração no Japão.
Feito isso, não demorou a chegar, trazendo apenas motor 1.5 16V SOHC i-VTEC Flex, que ainda adotava tanquinho e entregava até 116 cavalos e tinha opção de câmbio automático de cinco marchas.
Com linhas mais fluídas e equilibradas em relação à geração anterior, o City 2013 ficava mais atraente com mudanças sutis, mas com a perda de versões, deixava o Civic se aproximar mais para encontrar os órfãos da EXL.
O City seguiu bem assim até a sexta geração, a segunda a ser feita no Brasil e que ainda está em produção. Pouco maior, tem uma carroceria mais elegante e interior mais próximo do Fit de terceira geração.
Inovou apenas ao substituir o câmbio automático de cinco marchas pelo CVT, preservando o motor e adotando um sistema flex por pré-aquecimento, além de multimídia e paddle shifts.
Hoje é criticado por ser o único da categoria sem controles de tração e estabilidade, assim como assistente de partida em rampa, apesar de suas qualidades em espaço interno, conforto, porta-malas, economia e conectividade.
A nova geração do City, porém, cresceu muito mais e praticamente tem o porte do New Civic, apesar da manutenção do entre-eixos, ficando bem mais sofisticado e usando, por exemplo, motores 1.0 Turbo e 1.5 Hybrid bem potente.
Essa geração deve chegar ao Brasil em 2021 com a quarta do Fit, reforçando o portfólio da marca que já vem cansando o consumidor, fato que fez a marca cair para nono lugar no  ranking após a Jeep despacha-la com apenas dois carros.
City 2013 – detalhes

O City 2013 tinha uma frente baixa e longa em relação ao Fit, empregando novos faróis de desenho mais fluído que os anteriores, tendo uma única parábola com piscas integrados, lanternas e luzes de posição nas extremidades da lente.
A grade também era nova e maior, descrevendo um “V” com os faróis e adotando frisos cromados com o logo da Honda bem ao centro, algo que mudaria na geração seguinte. O para-choque foi revisado e perdeu os faróis de neblina.
Duas concavidades nas extremidades davam fluídez às linhas do protetor e combinavam com o mesmo formato na base das portas, dando assim mais identidade ao Honda City.
Os retrovisores eram na cor do carro e bem projetados para fora, tendo ainda repetidores de direção no City EX. As maçanetas das portas eram na cor do carro, mas na EX tinham acabamento cromado.
As rodas eram aro 15 polegadas nas versões DX e LX, sendo de aço na primeira e liga leve na segunda, ambas com pneus 175/65 R15. Na versão EX, o City 2013 tinha rodas diamantadas de aro 16 polegadas com pneus 185/55 R16.
Na traseira, o para-choque reproduzia as formas do protetor frontal com moldura inferior preta e dotada de refletores. O escape com ponteira cromada era primazia da versão EX. Já as lanternas em formato pentagonal eram novas.
A tampa do porta-malas tinha formas que se moldavam às lanternas e apresentava ainda barra cromada sobre a placa no caso da versão EX, com DX e LX apresentando a mesma na cor da carroceria. No teto, apenas uma antena.
Por dentro, o City 2013 mantinha o painel, que era exclusivo em relação ao Honda Fit. Bem amplo e com desenho atraente, o conjunto frontal tinha cluster analógico com três mostradores, que ganharam iluminação azul.
Antes, o conjunto tinha iluminação laranja. Além disso, recebeu ainda computador de bordo com consumo médio e instantâneo, além de outras funcionalidades. Havia ainda velocímetro, nível de combustível e temperatura da água.
O painel era preto e tinha a parte central em grafite, que substituiu a cor prata anterior, fazendo o mesmo com os apliques nas portas, onde as maçanetas eram cromadas. Com sistema de áudio integrado 2din, trazia CD player, MP3 e USB.
Não tinha Bluetooth, porém, o volante multifuncional igual ao do Civic tinha acabamento em couro, piloto automático e paddle shifts, além de coluna ajustável em altura e profundidade.
Ainda na versão EX, o ar condicionado era automático e tinha display digital de cor laranja, que era igual ao do rádio. Com linhas fluídas ao centro, o painel tinha ainda fonte 12V e porta-copos mais abaixo.
O túnel apresentava acabamento em grafite, tanto na alavanca de câmbio manual com pomo grafite, assim como na automática, que tinha a manete com botão de trava cromado. Neste último, havia ainda a posição S de esportivo.
Os bancos dianteiros eram largos e o do motorista tinha ajuste em altura, bem como acabamento em tecido no City DX e LX, enquanto o EX vinha com couro, inclusive nas portas dianteiras e traseiras.
Atrás, o banco era bipartido e tinha apoio de braço central com porta-copos no EX, bem como três apoios de cabeça, cintos de 3 pontos para todos e Isofix/Latch. Havia porta-revistas atrás dos encostos dianteiros.
Nas portas, a base dos comandos dos vidros elétricos eram em grafite e apenas o vidro do motorista era do tipo one touch. No teto, luz central e luzes de leitura dianteiras, além de retrovisor dia e noite, espelhos nos para-sois e alças de mão.
O City 2013 tinha ainda apoio de braço central dianteiro e com porta-objetos, assim como porta-luvas sem iluminação ou refrigeração. O habitáculo era protegido por duas bolsas infláveis para motorista e passageiro, já a direção era elétrica.
Já o porta-malas tinha 506 litros com forro em carpete e iluminação, tendo ainda estepe sob o assoalho e capacidade para ser ampliado com o rebatimento do encosto traseiro. A tampa podia ser aberta por dentro, assim como o tanque.

City 2013 – motor

O City 2013 usou somente um motor em sua oferta e ele faz parte da família L da Honda. Essa linha de propulsores da marca japonesa apareceu em 2001 no lançamento do Fit no Japão.
Essa gama de motores existe apenas com quatro cilindros e, sendo assim, o motor 1.0 Turbo usado pela Honda atualmente não faz parte da mesma. Surgiram basicamente os propulsores L12A, L13A e L15A.
No Brasil, a Honda produziu apenas os dois últimos, mas apenas o L13A teve a arquitetura original de 2001, que é o conceito i-DSI que usa duas velas de ignição por cilindro num cabeçote de alumínio com oito válvulas.
Para o City, a Honda nunca reservou este propulsor, que chegou a ganhou o sistema VTEC de comando único variável para 16 válvulas, sendo que apenas o Fit conemporâneo do modelo 2013 utilizou esse propulsor.
Na Honda, a força que a marca queria disponibilizar para seu sedã compacto só seria admissível com um motor maior e, então, empregou o L15A com VTEC, mas já na geração usada pelo Fit 2013.
Contruído em alumínio e com comando único acionado por corrente, o 1.5 i-VTEC Flex do City entregava 115 cavalos na gasolina e 116 cavalos no etanol, ambos a 6.000 rpm. O torque, único para os dois combustíveis, era de 14,8 kgfm a 4.800 rpm.
Essa tecnologia VTEC permite a melhor variação de abertura e fechamento das válvulas de admissão e escape, chegando mesmo a manter metade delas fehcadas em baixas rotações, garantindo mais força nesse regime de funcionamento.
Já em alta, todoas ficam abertas para melhor rendimento. Ainda assim, devido ao tamanho das válvulas, não se consegue obter torque máximo em giros baixos, como no 1.3 i-DSI da primeira geração do Fit, que era de oito válvulas maiores.
Com injeção eletrônica multiponto sequencial, o Honda City 2013 tinha ainda sistema flex de inejção de gasolina na partida a frio com álcool, porém, independente da temperatura externa, o sistema injetava gasolina do reservatório.
Assim como no Honda Fit, o City tinha um tanquinho próximo do para-brisa, que era envolvido por uma proteção feita de aço naval, de modo a torna-la blindada contra impactos em caso de acidente, evitando rachaduras e vazamento.
Para evitar que a gasolina se degradasse nesse reservatório, a Honda mudou a programação para que a cada partida a gasolina fosse usada, exigindo assim uma incomum frequência no abastecimento do sistema flex em seus carros.
Para facilitar a operação, que seria rotineira para os proprietários, a Honda adicionou um segundo bocal de abastecimento de combustível, algo não visto desde os antigos Volkswagen com motor refrigerado a ar até os anos 80.
Tanto o City quanto Fit e Civic, receberam esse item entre 2008 e 2015. Além disso, o propulsor 1.5 i-VTEC ainda é conhecido por ter refrigeração selada com troca de fluído bem longa. A rede Honda faz o serviço a cada 80.000 km.
É por isso que os carros da Honda com motor L não apresentam medidor de temperatura da água. No Fit de primeira geração, por exemplo, o manual falava em troca aos 140.000 km!
O City 2013 tinha ainda transmissão manual de cinco marchas e automática com conversor de torque, também com cinco velocidades, mas com opção de modo Sport e paddle shifts para trocas manuais no volante da versão EX.
Ele conferia ao City um bom desmepenho, mas na geração seguinte, a Honda optou por mais eficiência e trocou-o pelo CVT, que deu ao sedã uma saída inicialmente lenta, corrigida com calibração, mas ainda assim abaixo do esperado.
Ainda não se sabe qual motor o Novo City usará no Brasil, uma vez que em mercados como da Índia, o velho L15 apareceu na versão B e com algo em torno de 122 cavalos, mas sem injeção direta, como no Earth Dream.
O desejado mesmo é o novo motor 1.0 Turbo VTC de duplo comando variável e injeção direta, que o Novo City usa em alguns mercados com até 127 cavalos, assim como o 1.5 i-VTEC Atkinson no Hybrid, que tem 151 cavalos.

City 2013 – manutenção e revisão

A Honda tem programação de revisão com paradas a cada 10.000 km ou 12 meses, sendo realizada em toda a rede Honda, que cobre todas as regiões do país.
O serviço consiste em inspeção de itens de direção, suspensão, freios e elétrica, além de componentes de segurança. Lubrificante do motor, no caso o óleo sintético 0W20, bem como filtro de óleo, arruela do dreno e filtro de ar são trocados.
Além disso, filtro de ar da cabine, filtro de combustível, velas, fluído de freio e correia em V geralmente são trocados nessas revisões, que podem ainda incluir serviços de alinhamento e balanceamento.
A rede Honda pode ainda lidar com funilaria, pintura e instalação de acessórios, bem como higienização e lavagem geral. As concessionárias também fazem a reposição de fluído da transmissão automática e do sistema de refrigeração.
