Hyundai's high-end brand name has been silently making terrific vehicles that have actually won the respect of peers and also movie critics, but have actually endured the sales despair afflicting all sedans. [side mirror glass]The 2021 Genesis GV80 takes that value/quality recommendation to the red-hot crossover SUV sector. Expected to start around $50,000 when it takes place sale later in 2020, the GV80 will likely damage deluxe three-row crossover SUVs ranging from the Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator, which start in the reduced $50,000 s, to the BMW X7, which begins at around $75,000. Genesis generally furnishes its designs with more standard functions than the base models of rivals. The 2020 Genesis G80 car, on which the three-row GV80 is based, comes criterion with 16-way power-adjustable seats, heated natural leather seats, flexible cruise control, automated emergency braking, energetic lane control, and also other tools usually packed as an optional plan by various other deluxe car manufacturers. That was among numerous reasons the G80 was the The Vehicle Connection's Best Car To Acquire 2020. Genesis hasn't revealed all the information of the GV80, yet the outside is headlined by a large shield grille and the inside is swaddled in superb quilted natural leather and also tidy, open dash surface areas, much like the G80. It's powered by either a 2.5-liter turbo-4 or a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 with an 8-speed automated that sends power to the rear wheels or all four wheels using offered four-wheel drive. Engine specs were not disclosed A new energetic noise cancellation system modeled after noise-cancelling headphones promises to keep the GV80 quiet in any way times for up to seven travelers. The optional third row will likely be cramped, yet offered second-row captain's chairs will certainly have a power reclining function. An offered Energetic Activity Chauffeur's Seat plans to decrease exhaustion on lengthy drives through making use of 7 air cells that, presumably, will certainly also massage therapy one's tired posterior.[buy it now]
Conventional tools consists of a 14.5-inch split-screen infotainment system, and all the active safety functions, from adaptive cruise control to automatic emergency braking with pedestrian discovery, rear automatic stopping, blind-spot displays, and also a driver-attention display.
More details, consisting of the full functions checklist as well as beginning cost, will certainly be offered when the GV80 takes place sale in the second half of the year.

2021 Cadillac Escalade first drive review: American swagger

2021 Cadillac Escalade first drive review: American swagger
This is the Cadillac we’ve been waiting for. The Escalade has been transformed from merely ordinary into something truly outstanding. Sure, the brand’s recent crop of products has been OK, including the engaging CT4-V sedan and handsome XT6 crossover, but these vehicles still don’t quite hit the mark, let down by questionable powertrains and less-than-stellar interiors. But none of this applies to the new Escalade. No, it’s not tuned to handle like a sport sedan, but it still drives well for something so large. This imposing SUV is extremely luxurious, yet it isn’t the least but stuffy or old-fashioned. It offers segment-leading technology that avoids being intimidating or difficult to use. In short, Cadillac has at long last delivered a true luxury contender. No if, ands or buts, this is a flagship model to be proud of.
Caddy’s caveat-free machine has the goods to square off with rivals from Germany, Japan and America to compete on equal terms, though you may not realize it at first glance. The new Escalade’s exterior is certainly recognizable — and handsome — but overall, it’s fairly sedate and unexpectedly demure, even in supersized ESV form, the model seen here. Inside, though, it’s a completely different story.
It seems General Motors’ designers must’ve blown most of their budget creating this Cadillac’s inner sanctum. Showing how much thought the company has put into this vehicle, it’s available in something like nine different interior trim combinations, with unique colors, wood finishes and leather perforation patterns depending on the model. Platinum versions, which sit at the pinnacle of the Escalade range, feature buttery-soft semi-aniline cowhides in all three rows and loads of standard equipment. Quality is a high point, too. Poke at various trim pieces or bezels and nothing feels cheap or frail, everything is nicely finished and solidly built. About the only thing I don’t like is the silly electronic shifter, which looks like an old, brick-style cell phone. Also, it remains to be seen how premium lower-trim interiors will be, but if this top-shelf model is any indication, they should be pretty majestic, too.
The 2021 Escalade’s comportment is praiseworthy. Like its sister SUVs from Chevrolet and GMC, the addition of an independent rear suspension has, among other things, dramatically improved ride comfort in the second and third rows of seats. Adult passengers should have little to complain about, even if they’re sitting in steerage.
Chances are, the first thing you’ll notice about the 2021 Cadillac Escalade’s cockpit won’t be the stitching or door handles, it’s the screens. Sprawling across the dashboard are three individual OLED panels which measure more than 38 inches across. Subtly curved and beautifully integrated into the overall design rather than tacked-on like an afterthought, these seemingly overlapping displays provide perfect blacks, low glare and, according to Cadillac, the largest color range in the automotive business. Seriously, this unprecedented amount of screen real estate makes for super impressive standard equipment, and these displays are far from just eye candy. Like GM’s other recent infotainment systems, the one in this vehicle is superb, booting up quickly, responding immediately to inputs and never stuttering or lagging. Pinch-to-zoom on the navigation map, for instance, is as responsive as the smartphone in your pocket or purse. For added convenience, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a wireless device charging pocket on the center console.
Those OLED screens… are amazing!
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Further satiating today’s tech-obsessed motorists, the new Escalade offers plenty of high-end goodies. Augmented-reality navigation is perhaps the coolest, and it’s a feature that’s standard across the model range. When a route is active, the system overlays directional arrows on top of a video feed of where you’re driving, which is then piped to the center screen from a forward-facing camera. The closer you get to a turn, the larger and more animated the directional arrows get, making it nearly impossible to miss a navigational cue. This Cadillac can also be had with night vision. The latter isn’t particularly useful in most situations, but it can be handy for detecting animals or pedestrians in low-speed areas. Making this beast of an SUV just a little easier to park, the standard 360-degree camera system offers a dizzying array of different angles, which you can easily cycle through with just a few taps of your finger. The new Escalade can also be had with an awesome AKG sound system that makes even highly compressed music, like satellite radio, come alive around you, though it’d better be good considering it has no fewer than 36 speakers.
But what about Super Cruise, GM’s groundbreaking hands-free driving aid? Well, a newly enhanced version that can automatically change lanes will be offered on the Escalade before year’s end. Unfortunately, the model I’m testing here is not fitted with this headlining feature, though it does have regular adaptive cruise control, which is smoother and more responsive than some competing systems.
Matching its primo interior, this Cadillac is also supremely quiet and smooth, even when ripping down the highway. On rare occasions, you can get a tiny, tiny bit of body-on-frame jiggle, but that’s really only on horrifying road surfaces. This vehicle’s steering is secure and its body remains firmly planted when navigating corners at speed. The available lane-keeping system seems ineffective, seemingly doing little to keep the Escalade on the straight and narrow.
Augmented-reality navigation takes advantage of the Escalade’s forward-facing camera.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Wind, tire and powertrain noise are all quieter than gossip behind your back. Matching that refinement, this vehicle’s ride quality is superb, too. Top-shelf Platinum models come with magnetic dampers and adaptive air suspension, the fanciest of three different setups offered on the Escalade. This combo delivers a ride that is both supple and controlled, far better than the Yukon Denali I tested recently, which, strangely enough, had the same suspension arrangement.
All of GM’s new, full-size SUVs are huge, but the extended-length models like the Chevy Suburban and this Escalade ESV are positively gargantuan. While turning corners, I’m constantly looking to make sure I don’t cut things too close or clip any wayward pedestrians. If you’re not careful, you could practically take out a whole elementary-school class and not even realize it. Of course, parking can be a chore, too, aggravated by the Cadillac’s tall hood and limited rearward visibility.
This luxury barge is hauled around by a smooth and snarly 6.2-liter small-block V8 that delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It makes this Caddy plenty potent, although I still slightly prefer how the Lincoln Navigator’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 performs, slightly. The latter has a huge load of torque right in the middle of its operating range, whereas this naturally aspirated V8 needs to rev a bit to really get going. Rectifying this, before the year is out, a 3.0-liter diesel inline-six will be available in the Escalade, delivering 460 lb-ft of twist from an estimated 1,500 rpm.
Who doesn’t love a good V8 engine? A diesel will also be available in this Cadillac before the year is done.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
No matter the engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission is standard fare, and it’s very nicely calibrated. In testing, I have not experienced any shift harshness, annoying lags or other bad behavior, plus it’s responsive to drop gears when your right foot calls for a bit of extra speed. With four-wheel drive, the Escalade ESV stickers at 14 miles per gallon city, 19 highway and 16 mpg combined. In mixed driving, I’ve been averaging round 17.7, which isn’t that great, but at least it’s better than the EPA combined rating.
When it’s time to slow things down, the Escalade’s brake pedal is a bit rubbery, but it’s easy to modulate and firm enough that it feels like you have generous stopping power in reserve. That’s important for a vehicle practically as heavy as the crawler that used to move the Space Shuttle around. Indeed, a four-wheel-drive Escalade ESV is no featherweight, clocking in at one full shopping bag shy of 6,000 pounds. Even so, this vehicle is still quite capable. My review unit’s maximum tow rating figures to be a stout 7,900 pounds, and when it comes to cargo hauling, the ESV is hard to beat. There’s 42.9 cubic feet of room in the way-back, but fold both the second- and third-row seats down and that figure balloons to 126.6 cubes, far more than you get in a Mercedes-Benz GLS or BMW X7; it’s even a good bit more generous than what the extended-length Navigator L provides, which maxes out at 120.2 cubic feet.
It’s kind of like a big ol’ box on wheels.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV’s base price is suitably rich, kicking off at about $80,500 delivered. The regular-length model is $3,000 cheaper. As you can guess, in Sport Platinum trim with four-wheel drive, this unit is far, far pricier. Including about six grand in options and $1,295 for destination fees, my tester rings up for $112,965. A princely sum, indeed.
But you know something? I’m not even mad about that. Thanks to its driving refinement, abundant yet easy-to-use tech and opulent interior, this price tag seems totally fair. The 2021 Escalade is the nicest, most thoughtfully crafted Cadillac to come along in years. It is truly a flagship-worthy vehicle

Future of Cadillac Is Electric-Only Vehicles With Real Names—but not Jolt!
Most, if not all, Cadillacs sold globally will have real names—not alphanumeric names—and be electric vehicles by 2030.
The transition from vehicles powered by internal combustion engines to sedans and crossovers running on battery power will cover the gamut from small cars to Escalade-sized SUVs, says Cadillac President Steve Carlisle.
All electric vehicles will have real names, but GM will not add Jolt to its portfolio that has included the Chevy Volt and Bolt, Carlisle promises MotorTrend. We can expect some alliteration in the future names, but they will not all start with the same letter, which is another industry naming trend.
The Escalade name will be kept in some form, but a new full-size electric SUV expected in a couple years could have a different name, Carlisle says.
At a media briefing in Detroit, Carlisle says Cadillac is wrapping up the first phase of its 10-year rejuvenation plan which focused on expanding the portfolio to fill in gaps in its crossover lineup and introducing new sedans. The icing on the cake is the 2021 Escalade, the fifth generation of the large SUV, which will be shown for the first time at an event on February 4.
Cadillac has spent $12 billion on phase one and enters the next decade with one of its strongest slates of vehicles, covering 94 percent of the market—up from about 64 percent. In other words, Cadillac now has a full roster and is ready to put some points on the board, Carlisle says.
On the utility side, there is the XT4, XT5, XT6, and Escalade. On the sedan side, the new CT5 started shipments to dealers this week and the smaller CT4 will follow next year. Both are 2020 models, but they will have a short model-year run. The refreshed CT6 remains in the lineup for now, with enough inventory to last another year. Production of the CT6 at the Hamtramck plant ceases in February.
But Cadillac’s ultimate future is one of pure electric vehicles, so vehicles with combustion engines will be phased out over time and replaced with electric counterparts.
“It is the end of the ICE age for Cadillac,” says Carlisle. The brand will be in a position to be 100 percent electric by the end of 2030.
The first electric crossover will be available in China in 2021, and the North American version will go on sale by the end of 2022. GM showed a concept of that crossover in January. They will be fruits of GM’s new electric vehicle architecture that will produce a battery-powered pickup truck in the fall of 2021 at GM’s plant in Detroit-Hamtramck.
GM plans to debut 20 new electric vehicles globally by 2023. Cadillac takes the lead because the luxury brand can better absorb the higher cost of the technology, and there is more demand among luxury buyers.
Overall, can Cadillac get back to where it needs to be? “Absolutely I believe it can,” GM CEO Mary Barra tells MotorTrend, pointing to the XT4 that entered a crowded small crossover segment and was a sales leader in the U.S. within a few months. She sees positive signs for the brand in the U.S. and globally.
Carlisle says global sales through the third quarter are up 8.8 percent, and in China, the world’s largest auto market, they are up almost 11 percent. Cadillac should end 2019 with another record global sales year, despite lost production due to a lengthy strike in the U.S.
Barra is pleased with Cadillac’s reception in China where consumers have not lived Cadillac’s history and don’t share concerns that some Americans have from the brand’s past. “It’s a bright spot in China with how well it’s doing in the luxury segment.”
While China presents the greatest opportunity, Barra says GM will continue to build the brand in the U.S. in a disciplined fashion and dealers are excited about new product, with a new vehicle launching every six months.
Despite the popularity of crossovers, Barra sees the importance of cars and likes the positioning of the new CT4 and CT5 sedans. “We do think luxury cars are a bit different than the mainstream market in the United States. Clearly cars are important in other markets around the world.” Even though crossover demand in China has hurt car sales, it is still a huge car market, especially in the luxury segments, she says. “It’s important to have the right representation.”

2021 Cadillac XT6 Gets New Engine and More
2021 Cadillac XT6 Gets New Engine and More
The XT6 came as a brand-new model last year, as a part of the company’s new naming policy. The mid-size 7-seater has been around for less than a year but there are already some changes to come for the 2021 Cadillac XT6. You may count on a new entry-level version, as well as on a smaller and more efficient engine. Because of that, the starting price is now significantly lower compared to the…

Big Boys Are Coming: Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon
The next-generation of GM’s full-size SUVs—the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Suburban—will all launch next year and their importance cannot be understated.
GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed the new versions of the profitable trio will come to market in 2020 but would not give exact timing, nor would she say if they will be delayed somewhat by the six-week UAW strike that recently ended with the ratification of a new four-year labor contract.
The big SUVs are much anticipated. Ever since Lincoln put out its new Navigator, expectations have been high for the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. Executives have promised the fifth-generation car will be worth the wait.
GM needs to get them right. These large, body-on-frame, three-row SUVs are critical to GM’s bottom line and their profits help fund the high-tech electric and autonomous vehicle development that’s already underway. They are also crucial because of their iconic nature; they help define their brands. The blinged-up Escalade became the company’s flagship at a time when other brands had large sedans in that role. The Escalade also made Cadillac cool, and the brand needs an injection of that as it struggles to rebuild its portfolio and reputation.
There has been criticism that the styling of the smaller three-row Cadillac XT6 crossover is bland when compared with its Lincoln Aviator counterpart. But some compromises were made during XT6 development, which shares its underpinnings with the XT5. The new Escalade has had high priority status and the resources that come with it.
The giant grille on the 2021 Escalade, as revealed in spy shots, shows a family resemblance to the new CT4 and CT5 sedans. The hope is the Escalade’s exterior will be more dramatic than the XT6 and that interior design and materials will be dramatically improved over its smaller brother.
There will be more than one powertrain, including an updated version of the 6.2-liter V-8 that’s already in the flagship Caddy. Early plans to give the Escalade the 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged Blackwing V-8 engine were shelved. Performance or V versions of the Escalade are expected to have a version of GM’s 6.2-liter supercharged small block V-8. Spy shots have revealed paddle shifters on the steering wheel for the first time in the Escalade.
We expect the addition of motors and batteries at some point since GM has designated Cadillac as their leading brand for electrification. Barra said GM, overall, will spend more on vehicles with electric powertrains than combustion engines over the next five years with the goal of being the automotive leader in electric vehicles.
The Escalade will also have Cadillac’s Super Cruise, the hands-free cruise control system for highway driving.
Once again there will be regular and stretched versions of the Escalade, Yukon and Suburban. The launch will be complicated with downtime at the plants in the first quarter of next year to retool for vehicles that have been changed significantly from their predecessors.
Confirmation of the rollout of the big SUVs came during GM’s third-quarter earnings call with investors. In addition to some possible tweaks to launch timing—the new Chevy Corvette might also launch a bit later than planned—the six-week strike will cost GM almost $3 billion in lost earnings over the course of the year, with the first $1 billion in losses already in the books.
The fourth quarter will be worse because the strike, which started Sept. 16, led to the shutdown of U.S. plants, and idled many operations in Canada and Mexico before employees returned to work. The new four-year contract includes signing bonuses, pay increases, preserves benefits, and allows for more part-time workers to become full-time.
The agreement is estimated to increase GM’s annual labor costs by $100 million but allows the automaker to close plants in Lordstown, Ohio, Warren Transmission in Michigan, and Baltimore Operations in Maryland. But plans to close the Detroit-Hamtramck plant near Detroit were reversed and GM instead is investing $3 billion to build electric pickups, vans, and battery modules there as part of a larger promise to invest $7.7 billion in U.S. factories over the next four years.
GM reported $2.3 billion in earnings in the third quarter, which is down 9 percent from the same period in 2018. Revenue declined slightly to $35.5 billion. While the strike hurts the bottom line now, and overall labor costs will increase, Barra said the goal was to reach an agreement that is good for employees without compromising the future of the company and shareholder value. She said she feels this deal does that.
GM will look for ways to further cut costs to pay for the decision to keep the Hamtramck plant open, and while most plants are at capacity they will try to find ways to make up for lost production during the strike.
Heavy-duty pickups with crew cabs launched during the third quarter and the rollout will continue with double cabs to be added next, followed by regular cab.
