Hands-Free Driving Coming to 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Tesla’s Autopilot is the best-known (thought-to-be) hands-free highway driving system out there, followed by Super Cruise, which General Motors introduced on the 2018 Cadillac CT6. Of course, only the Caddy system is truly hands-free—the Tesla setup, despite popular assumptions, requires periodic hand-to-steering-wheel contact to keep the driver-assist going, otherwise it deactivates.
Ford has studied these (and other self-steering lane-keep and adaptive cruise functions) closely and thinks it can do better. When the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric crossover SUV goes on sale by the end of the year, customers can get the crossover with the hardware needed for many miles of hands-free driving, self-parking, and other enhancements coming for the ever-evolving Ford Co-Pilot360 collection of driver-assist features. It’s worth noting, though, that none of these systems promises to make the autonomous or self-driving, but rather will automate steering, throttle, and brakes in certain conditions while the driver continues to carefully monitor the road and the car.
In a call with reporters, Ford officials explained why they think their system will be the best yet for customers. For starters: The name. Taking a dig at Tesla, which has been criticized for calling its system Autopilot and then being surprised when drivers treat it like autopilot (resulting in some disastrous accidents), Ford is being careful with its words. “We carefully select names for features that don’t overpromise that they can do more than they can,” Chris Billman, a Ford driver-assist engineer, said. The automaker feels its system, called Active Drive Assist, is more accurately named.
The other difference that Ford thinks will separate Active Drive Assist from the pack, is the ease with which drivers will be able to engage and disengage the system, Darren Palmer, Ford’s global director for battery-electric vehicles, said. Some systems force the driver to almost wrestle back control of the vehicle and the transition can be abrupt. In the Mach-E, Palmer said, the transition from man to machine and back is barely perceptible as Active Drive Assist smoothly adjusts steering or braking during system switchover.
Hands-Free Mode
A new Hands-Free mode allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on pre-mapped, divided highways as long as the person behind the wheel continues to pay attention to the road ahead. An advanced driver-facing infrared camera tracks the driver’s eyes and head position in Hands-Free mode, as well as when hands-on Lane Centering mode is engaged, which works on any road with lane lines. The addition of this new camera is key, Billman said. It is in addition to the cameras and radar already dotting the car.
Palmer said much time and effort went into graphics and messaging that informs the driver of the state of the technology, with animated pictures, such as a graphical protective bubble around the car that denotes the computers are at the wheel. Warnings will be clear when the driver must pay better attention or assume control, otherwise, the vehicle will slow down until the driver is re-engaged. Billman said the screens will also alert drivers when they have entered a hands-free zone, with animations showing it is alright to let go of the steering wheel. The graphics were well received in customer clinics, he said, which was important because some competitive systems have been criticized for being confusing.
To be fair, Ford has the benefit of time. Tesla’s system has been on the road for many years, and it has continually worked to perfect it and introduce new features, including the ability to handle freeway interchanges and navigate intersections, the latter of which is still in its beta stage. GM has also enhanced Super Cruise and is working on Ultra Cruise, which will add hands-free driving in the city.
Phased Rollout on the Mach-E
The Ford timeline is to roll out Active Drive Assist on the Mach-E in two phases: Customers can first opt for the Prep package at the time of purchase. The Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 Prep package includes all camera and radar hardware. The advanced infrared driver-facing camera even monitors those in the driver’s seat with sunglasses on.
In summer 2021, customers will have a menu of software options they can purchase, including Active Drive Assist, which would be sent to the Mach-E as an over-the-air update. This follows the lead of Tesla, which sends over-the-air updates to its customers’ cars. Palmer said every module in the Ford system was designed for over-the-air upgrades in order to ensure Mach-E customers always have access to the latest tech.
Mapped Miles Will Grow
Initially, Ford will offer hands-free driving on more than 100,000 miles of divided highways in all 50 states and Canada. By comparison, GM’s Super Cruise system works on more than 200,000 miles of highway across North America, with GM continuing to expand the feature’s geofenced area.
Ford engineers and test drivers have accumulated more than 650,000 miles testing tech such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot information systems with cross-traffic alert to ensure these radar- and camera-based features work in as many real-world scenarios as possible. The idea is to keep improving and be able to recognize and handle roads under construction. In time, the company plans to offer hands-free driving on far more than the initial 100,000 miles of highway it’s currently greenlit.
May I Park That for You?
The other enhancement that Ford announced relates to its parking assist system. The Prep package also includes Active Park Assist 2.0, which allows the owner to simply hold a button to get the car in and out of tight parking spaces.
Even Mach-Es without the Prep package boasts a number of enhancements. The Co-Pilot360 2.0 standard package adds a road edge detection feature to the car’s lane-keeping system. The feature is designed to work in rural areas lacking visible road lines and alerts the driver if the vehicle drifts toward the edge of the road. Meanwhile, the Mach-E’s blind-spot assist will nudge the crossover back into its lane if it detects a vehicle in the blind spot during a lane-change maneuver.
These additions are on top of the features Ford already puts in its Co-Pilot safety system, which includes automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, post-collision braking, and more. Ford also improved its adaptive cruise control system, which features stop-and-go functionality. While the driver once had to reactivate the function once the car came to a stop for three seconds, the person in the left seat now can let the car do the work of restarting if it’s been stopped for less than 30 seconds. The system also recognizes speed signs now, and it’s capable of applying the brakes when making a left turn at an intersection if the various sensors determine another vehicle has ignored a red light.
Competitively Priced
Ford is not releasing pricing yet for its latest additions to its Co-Pilot360 safety system, but Palmer said it will be highly competitive.
And while Ford is not sharing plans past the Mach-E debut, it’s safe to assume the features will be rolled out to other future Ford vehicles. For now, Ford will only note that Active Drive Assist is due to roll out on select 2021 model year Ford vehicles and that the feature will be available across the Mustang Mach-E lineup. We’d guess the next-generation F-150, as well as the 2021 Ford Bronco and 2021 Bronco Sport, is a strong candidate for the feature.

GM is working on a hands-off advanced driving system for city streets
GM has a “big team” working on an advanced version of its hands-free driving assistance system Super Cruise that will expand its capability beyond highways and apply it to city streets, the automaker’s vice president of global product development Doug Parks said Tuesday.
GM is also continuing to improve its existing Super Cruise product, Parks said during a webcasted interview at Citi’s 2020 Car of the Future Symposium.
“As we continue to ratchet up Super Cruise, we continue to add capability and not just highway roads,” Parks said, adding that a separate team is working on the hands-free city driving product known internally as “Ultra Cruise.”
“We’re trying to take that same capability off the highway,” he said. “Ultra cruise would be all of the Super Cruise plus the neighborhoods, city streets and subdivisions. So Ultra Cruise’s domain would be  essentially all driving, all the time.”
Parks was quick to add that this would not be autonomous driving. Advanced driving assistance systems have become more capable, but they still require a human driver to take control and to be paying attention.
“What we’re not saying is that Ultra Cruise will be fully autonomous 100% of the time, although that could be one of the end games,” Parks said.
Parks didn’t provide a timeline for when Ultra Cruise might be available. A GM spokesperson said in a statement after his interview that the company continues to expand its hands-free driver assistance system technology across its vehicle portfolio and has “teams looking at how we can expand the capabilities to more scenarios.”
GM said it “does not have a name or anything specific to announce today, but stay tuned.”
This new Ultra Cruise feature would put it in competition with Tesla’s Autopilot advanced driving system, which is largely viewed as the most capable on the market today. Tesla’s “full self-driving” package, a more capable version of Autopilot, can now identify stop signs and traffic lights and automatically slows the car to a stop on approach. This feature is still considered to be in beta.
GM’s Super Cruise uses a combination of lidar map data, high-precision GPS,  cameras and radar sensors, as well as a driver attention system, which monitors the person behind the wheel to ensure they’re paying attention. Unlike Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system, users of Super Cruise do not need to have their hands on the wheel. However, their eyes must remain directed straight ahead.
GM has taken a slower approach to Super Cruise compared to Tesla’s method of rolling out software updates that gives early access to some owners to test the improved features. When GM launched Super Cruise in 2017, it was only available in one Cadillac model — the full-size CT6 sedan — and restricted to divided highways. That began to change in 2019 when GM announced plans to expand where Super Cruise would be available.
GM’s new digital vehicle platform, which provides more electrical bandwidth and data processing power, enabled engineers to add to Super Cruise’s capabilities. In January, GM added a feature to Super Cruise that automated lane changes for drivers of certain Cadillac models, including the upcoming 2021 Escalade.
This enhanced version of Super Cruise includes better steering and speed control. The improved version will be introduced starting with the 2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans, followed by the new 2021 Cadillac Escalade. The vehicles are expected to become available in the second half of 2020.

GM Unveils New Lithium-Ion Battery Tech, Vows 400-Mile Cars
General Motors reveals its all-new modular platform and battery system, Ultium, Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at the Design Dome on the GM Tech Center campus in Warren, Michigan. (Photo by Steve Fecht for General Motors)r
General Motors is going electric in a big way. This week the company announced plans for a new battery technology called Ultium that will have more range than Tesla and be used in a broad array of future EVs including an upcoming Cadillac luxury SUV and flagship sedan. GM says the technology uses less hard-to-get, hard-on-miners cobalt, and cell costs should fall below the $100-per-kilowatt-hour level that starts to make EVs more competitive than gasoline-engine cars.
The batteries will be built as rectangular pouches rather than cylindrical cells – more space-efficient – that can be stacked horizontally and vertically. GM promises 19 battery and drive unit configurations initially for affordable cars, luxury cars, SUVs and pickups. GM and partner LG Chem are scheduled to break ground in the next three months on a $2 billion plant in Lordstown, Ohio, that could create more than 1,100 jobs. Sorry, make that “good-paying jobs,” since this is an election year.
General Motors chairman / CEO Mary Barra at the Ultium rollout Wednesday in Michigan at GM’s Design Dome.
GM is spending this week briefing analysts, media, employees, and partners at its Warren, Michigan, Design Dome on its Empire Strikes Back strategy. Since fall, relative-newcomer Tesla tripled in value and is worth more than GM and Ford combined as analysts see Tesla being the best pure-play for people who want to get in on EVs as an investment. “GM is building toward an all-electric future because we believe climate change is real,” said chairman and CEO Marry Barra Wednesday. She pegged GM’s EV investment at $3 billion annually.
One attention-grabber is GM’s claim that its new battery technology will provide a range of 400 miles or more per charge, slightly topping the 390 miles Tesla claims for the Tesla Model S Long Range sedan. (Tesla, for its part, plans to lay out its future EV and battery plans within the next month or so.) GM didn’t go into detail on what size battery pack would accomplish the feat, although you’d obviously need larger packs for larger cars.
Working with LG Chem, GM’s new battery technology uses rectangular pouch cells rather than cylindrical cells. Battery modules will be built in Lordstown, Ohio.
The new battery technology will have configurations from 50 kWh to 200 kWh for cars and SUVs. Performance vehicles will achieve 0-60 mph acceleration of as little as 3 seconds. GM says most will have 400-volt battery packs, and support for Level 2 charging (possible at home with 220 volts) and DC fast charging at up to 200 kW. The truck platform would have 800-volt battery packs and 350 kW fast-charge capability. This would include commercial vehicles.
For both cars and trucks, the pouch cells will allow for even higher energy density and lower centers of gravity. The ability to stacks cells horizontally or vertically is unique in the industry. GM also says battery management is built-in and – compared with the current Chevrolet Bolt – reduces battery pack wiring 80 percent.
GM says the new cells will have “the highest nickel and lowest cobalt content in a large format pouch cell.” It also says its researchers are working to eliminate cobalt as one of the battery components. Currently, cobalt is tough to mine, comes from countries that are not always friendly to the US, and working conditions are said to be unsafe, although there’s considerable discussion about whether that’s because of inherent dangers or because the mining companies don’t treat workers well.
GM’s new battery technology will be called Ultium.
GM plans an extensive rollout of new electric vehicles starting this year. According to GM:
Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick will all be launching new EVs starting this year. The next new Chevrolet EV will be a new version of the Bolt EV, launching in late 2020, followed by the 2022 Bolt EUV, launching Summer 2021. The Bolt EUV will be the first vehicle outside of the Cadillac brand to feature Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology for the highway, which GM will expand to 22 vehicles by 2023, including 10 by next year.
The self-driving, shared EV called the Cruise Origin was shown in concept form in January in San Francisco. Next up to be announced is the Cadillac Lyriq in April. The GMC Hummer EV will be introduced May 20 with production due to begin in fall 2020 at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, the company’s first plant just for EVs.
GM is staking its massive investment on a big uptick in demand for EVs – whether voluntary, helped by tax incentives, or mandated because of concerns about climate change. GM says:
Third-party forecasters expect U.S. EV volumes to more than double from 2025 to 2030 to about 3 million units on average. GM believes volumes could be materially higher as more EVs are launched in popular segments, charging networks grow and the total cost of ownership to consumers continues to fall.
GM revealed an all-new modular architecture and Ultium batteries at the GM Design Dome in Michigan.
GM is right to be optimistic since there’s pretty much nowhere to go but up for the EV industry. The market last year for electric vehicles was 330,000 in the US out of 17.0 million light vehicles sold, 1.9 percent, and those 48 vehicles include both pure EVs and plug-in hybrids that go 15 to 50 miles on battery before the combustion engine kicks in (but not hybrids like the Toyota Prius).
Pure EVs, 18 models total, accounted for 245,000 sales, or 1.4 percent of the US market. But when Tesla Model 3, Model X, and Model S got done feasting on the market – with no tax credits to offer anymore – what’s left amounted to barely 50,000 sales. Just six pure-EV models managed more than 5,000 sales last year:
Tesla Model 3, 158,925
Tesla Model X, 19,225
Chevrolet Bolt EV, 16,148
Tesla Model S, 14,100
Nissan Leaf, 12,365
Audi e-tron, 5,369
GM had two other electrified vehicles on sale in 2019, the end-of-life Chevrolet Volt PHEV with 4,910 sales and the Cadillac CT6 PHEV with 24 sales. The year before Chevy killed the Volt PHEV, it actually had slightly more sales than the Bolt EV, but demand for plug-ins continues to be soft. Last year the Toyota Prius Prime was the second-best-selling electrified vehicle with 23,630 sales, but the only PHEV with more than 10,000 sales was the Honda Clarity, at 10,728. BMW has the most electrified vehicles, six, with five of them PHEVs.
History has shown that first-to-market status doesn’t always guarantee long-term dominance. Facebook was not the first social media platform. Remember Myspace? In other words, Tesla absolutely dominates the market for EVs today, but this is a long race, not a sprint.
