First Look: The BMW Concept i4
The BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its history with the unveiling of a pure-electric Gran Coupe in Geneva. The BMW Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in 2021 as the BMW Group’s first all-electric model in the premium midsize class. It provides a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe – all while generating zero local emissions. Film composer Hans Zimmer provided the soundtrack to the world premiere in Geneva and used the press conference to present the unique electric drive sound for the BMW Concept i4.
“The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.” The drivetrain’s numbers include a range of 600 km (373 miles), output of up to 530hp, 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism.
“The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to detail,” adds Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “With the Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.” As part of the package, the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4 and other electrically-powered production vehicles.
The exterior – electrifying aesthetics. The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest.
Clear surfaces and aerodynamic details. Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a color nuance displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of surfaces to visually stunning effect. Blue elements in the front end, flanks and rear end point to the car’s BMW i origins. They shine a spotlight on the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance aerodynamic efficiency.
he front end – the eye-catching face of a new era. The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar BMW icons in a new look, lending a visually powerful face to the electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and pared-back interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the front-end styling.
Taking the first steps with the new BMW brand identity. BMW is unveiling the brand’s new look for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The new logo for communications also provides the basis for the badge on the BMW Concept i4. Its two-dimensional and transparent design ensures seamless integration and brings the special exterior color shade Frozen Light Copper to even greater prominence. The concept car not only has the task of looking ahead to the future in terms of aesthetics, technology and innovation, it also explores the design potential within our BMW trademark.
Striking rear end with aerodynamic features. The rear of the BMW Concept i4 sits low over the road and cuts a broad, horizontally emphasized figure. The surfaces progress across the rear in a smooth and luxuriant movement, and give it a very modern and calm appearance. The long, slim L-shaped rear lights continue the theme. Below the rear lights, the inward-angled surfaces form aerodynamics-enhancing lips and incorporate vertical air outlets. The verticality of the design here emphasizes the car’s sporting stance. Further down, the rear apron has a forceful presence and enhances aerodynamic efficiency. Where exhaust tailpipes would once have been found, diffuser elements in BMW i Blue indicate the presence of a pure-electric drive system and reference the design of the BMW i Vision Dynamics.
The interior – innovation meets minimalism. The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new Curved Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen grouping optimizes presentation of information and makes the display’s touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and airy cockpit.
The Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section in front of the driver and above the center stack, and gives the front area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centered on reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the climate control system now works by touch control.
Focus on the essential. The front section of the interior around the Curved Display also majors on pared-back design. The understated use of different materials and the fundamental arrangement of controls creates a modern yet also luxurious ambience. With this in mind, elements such as air outlets are integrated almost invisibly into the overall geometry and concealed behind strong patterns. Accent strips in warm Gold Bronze blending to chrome lend the interior a high-class touch. The central control panel replaces a traditional gear lever with a toggle-type shifter. Elements such as the iDrive Controller and seat memory buttons in the doors are finished in a classy crystal glass. The cloth/leather combination for the seats – composed of microfiber with line graphics and natural leather tanned using olive leaf – sets a high-quality and sustainable seal on the interior. The overall result is a clearly structured, bright and airy cabin which brings across the tranquillity and authority of electric drive systems.
The technology as earmarked for the upcoming BMW i4. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3 due to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are all-new developments enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance attributes and exceptional efficiency.
The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its extremely slim construction and optimized energy density. It weighs roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and achieves an operating range of up to 600 km (373 miles) in the WLTP cycle.
All in all, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets new standards in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally emission-free driving.
Production of the new i4. Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future, combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.
Integrating the BMW i4 into the existing production system represents a challenging task for Plant Munich. The body concept of the BMW i4 differs from the architectures of the vehicle models produced at the plant to date due to the need to accommodate its high-voltage battery. Approximately 90 per cent of the existing production equipment in the body shop can be incorporated into the process, i.e. adapted to manufacture of the i4. However, the remaining ten per cent – especially the machinery involved in building the rear structure – will need to be newly built.
A separate new piece of equipment will be fitted in the assembly halls for installation of the high-voltage battery, as the battery needs to be fitted in the car from below. A particular challenge in the conversion/installation process are the crowded structures of the assembly halls. Working within these tight confines, old machinery will have to be removed and new equipment installed and brought on stream within a six-week period. This requires long-term planning and precise implementation.

The all-electric i4 is based on a specially adapted version of the 3 Series’ CLAR architecture. Measuring 4,783mm long, 1,852mm wide and 1,448mm tall, the i4 has similar dimensions to the conventional 3 Series sedan. In terms of design, the i4 is clearly visually related to the combustion-engined 4 Series. It features a distinctive cab-rearward profile, a large, closed-off kidney grille up front and slim LED headlights.
Inside, the i4 aims to offer “a richly involving driving experience”. There’s a free-standing 12.3-inch infotainment screen running BMW’s eighth-generation iDrive system, plus a 14.9-inch curved digital dial display, standard sports seats and blue accents throughout as nods to the car’s electric underpinnings. Three-zone automatic climate control is standard and ventilated seats are an option for both rows on the international version.
BMW i4: powertrain and battery
Internationally, the BMW i4 is available in two variants – eDrive40 and M50 xDrive. The entry-level eDrive40 version is rear-wheel drive only and it uses an electric motor that puts out 340hp and 430Nm. It is said to do the 0-100kph sprint in 5.7sec.
The all-wheel drive M50 employs a 258hp motor on the front axle and a 313hp motor on the rear axle, for a combined output of 544hp and 795Nm. The M50 also gets a unique Sport Boost function that can be used to liberate the full power output for around 10 seconds when driven in Sport mode. With this activated, the M50 can do 0-100kph in 3.9sec. However, it remains to be seen which version of the BMW i4 will be on offer in India.
The i4 stores uses a floor-mounted lithium-ion battery pack which has a gross (total) energy capacity of 83.9kWh and a net (usable) capacity of 80.7kWh. The battery is claimed to be 30 percent more power-dense than that used by the i3 hatchback.
It can charge at rates of up to 200kW, adding 164km of range in the eDrive40 and 140km worth of electrical energy in the M50, in just 10 minutes. What’s more, adjustable regenerative braking can top up the battery at rates of up to 195kW in the M50 and 116kW in the eDrive40.

New Aerodynamic Wheels for the BMW iX3
In today's automobiles, the wheels and their aerodynamic flow influence the overall vehicle efficiency by up to 30%. That is why a further developed technology of the BMW Aerodynamic Wheel is making its debut together with the BMW iX3, whose market launch is planned for 2020: The new combination of aluminum base wheel and individually designed inserts complements the efficient basic alignment of the BMW's Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) effectively.
While reducing drag for about 5% compared to a conventionally powered BMW X3 the new Aerodynamic Wheels are not only more efficient but also lighter than previous ones: Thanks to optimum airflow around the wheel arches, the wheels are 15% lighter than the aerodynamic wheels previously fitted by BMW. Their benefits in terms of aerodynamics and weight have the overall effect of lowering power consumption for the BMW iX3 by another 2% in the European WLTP test cycle – equating to 0.4 kWh/100 km – and thereby extending the vehicle range by 10 kilometres. The wheels’ appearance can be varied in numerous different ways, enabling a vast variety of possibilities for the design of wheels on future models. The new Aerodynamic Wheels will also feature on the BMW iNext and BMW i4, which are going to be introduced in 2021.
The Aerodynamic Wheels on the BMW iX3 blend lightweight construction and reduced air resistance with the sporting elegance of a V‑spoke aluminium wheel in a whole new way. The dimensions of the base wheel ensure the wheel living up to all the structural challenges involved in transmitting dynamic driving forces. Inserts with a high-class finish are responsible for achieving the necessary aerodynamic impact. This new division of tasks heralds a substantial weight saving over previous aerodynamic wheels from BMW.
Furthermore, the new base wheel is made using less material than its precursor adding up to the reduction of unsprung mass by lightweight inserts. This enhances both, driving dynamics and efficiency. Additionally, the mix of materials is benefitting a resource-efficient manufacture, as there is no need for further tools to produce special wheel options with optimised aerodynamics. To fit the lightweight base wheel, the inserts are precision-moulded and integrated into the outside of the wheel between the spokes. Thus, they are highly effective in reducing wheel-arch air turbulence – and therefore aerodynamic drag. As a result, the Aerodynamic Wheels form a key element of the overall package developed for optimum efficiency of the BMW iX3.

Why 2021 Is Shaping Up To Be A Pivotal Year For Electric Vehicles
Electric cars and trucks are the future, and yearly we have actually seen automakers include more EVs to their schedule. Every person is dealing with electric lorries, from reputable existing makers to brand-new names such as Byton, Lordstown, as well as Rivian.
BMW's very first "i" automobiles, the i3 and also i8, depended upon wild, futuristic styles to make a declaration. The following model in the electrical sub-brand has even more standard styling, as it's planned to be similar to the 4-series Gran Sports Car four-door hatchback. BMW has currently announced that the i4 will have 530 hp as well as an 80 kWh battery pack.
The Canoo pickup assures 600 horse power and 200 miles of array. It's smaller than what's normally located in the mid-size pickup section, being 2 feet shorter than the Ford Ranger. Canoo states its pickup will be provided with a six-to-eight-foot pickup bed as well as that it will certainly be available for pre-order mid-2021, with production beginning in 2023.
Canoo is checking a registration service that would enable customers to use as well as pay for the EV just when it's required, like Netflix. Canoo claims this little bus will have a series of 250 miles and also 300 horse power. Information on registration cost or preliminary cost haven't been revealed yet, yet expect more information as we get closer to 2022.
The Future Of Transportation Is Autonomous & Electric
Building off its storied best-selling history and recent collaboration with Rivian, Ford is seeking to make an all-electric version of the F-150 pickup, and it'll be called Lightning. The company wishes it will certainly be robust sufficient to stay clear of estranging its central consumer base while likewise attracting new buyers thinking about possessing a pickup without the carbon footprint of a gasoline engine.
Aston Martin has relaunched the Lagonda name as an all-electric luxury brand for the upper crust. Its wagon hull trips on the same platform as the Aston Martin DBX, which makes us wonder exactly how close an electric DBX is from production. Aston employer Andy Palmer informed us that he expects electric designs to have efficiency comparable to the brand's gas matchings which he expects greater than 300 miles in between check outs to the plug.
Although Lexus is a little late to the party, the luxury brand has announced it will eventually offer an EV drivetrain called Direct 4. It showcased an SUV model with the technology in 2020, with front and also rear electric motors that create 201 horse power and 221 pound-feet of torque each. Total result is unknown. Although the model cars evaluating Direct 4 are likely extremely pre-production test-mules, we anticipate the actual point to be a compact crossover that's close to the Lexus NX in size.
Lotus is planning on making another track-ready carbon-fiber car, but in a twist, which it makes 1254 lb-ft of, it'll be all-wheel drive, make an absurd 1972 horsepower, and (gasp) will be an EV. Lotus is intending to call this monster the Evija, and only 130 will be made, at a rate of $2.1 million each. There's no word on what array can be anticipated, however Lotus claims that it can bill up to 80 percent in 12 minutes many thanks to ultrafast charging rates.
The Future Of Transportation Is Autonomous & Electric
Mercedes-Benz's new EV lineup will be referred to as the EQ family. The Mercedes-Benz EQA, the company's smallest electric portable SUV, was exposed previously this year in Europe-spec kind. The Euro variation of the EQA has 187 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and also starting at around $57,000. Mercedes-Benz recommended an EQA in the U.S. could have four-wheel drive with around 280 horsepower.
The Mercedes-Benz EQC400 4Matic, Mercedes's first electric automobile, is a compact crossover with an estimated range of 200 miles. Mercedes-Benz revealed in February 2021 that they had decided to not supply the EQC in the United States, in the meantime.
The Pininfarina Battista is an 1873-horsepower EV coupe that uses Rimac's carbon chassis and EV powertrain. It's an EV hypercar, and last year completed its initial high-speed test at the Nardo examination track in Italy with one of nine of its models. Anticipate a price over $2 million, but do not anticipate to ever before see one at your neighborhood. Shipments are claimed to start later in 2021.
Porsche recently announced that the next generation of its Macan crossover will go full electric. The Porsche Macan EV will certainly be based upon the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform that is being co-developed with Audi. It will certainly have the same 800-volt technology as the next Taycan and also will possibly share its electrical motors and also battery packs, also. Porsche intends to begin production of the Macan EV in 2022.

Electric Cars: What To Expect Between 2020 And 2030
Volvo already sells a 402-hp XC40 Recharge with 208 miles of range. The C40 shares the exact same powertrain as the XC40 Recharge, with 2 electrical motors as well as 75.0-kWh battery pack. It's likewise the same powertrain the Polestar 2 usages. Volvo estimates the C40 to have an EPA-rated driving variety of 210 miles. We anticipate pricing to begin around $55,000, with even more details about the C40 Recharge to come when production starts later in 2021.
Electric Vehicles
Pick-up trucks and also SUVs packing battery packs rather of gas engine will soon be rolling off assembly line en masse, reprising the American automotive landscape with daily they're on sale. So to keep tabs on all the cool new EVs coming down the pike, we have actually placed together this summary of the ones we recognize concerning that have us most excited.
The Chevy Bolt hatchback is receiving for a refresh in 2021, but its crossover twin, the Bolt EUV, is the far more exciting proposition. Well, calling it a crossover is maybe a stretch; it's FWD-only, and also uses little in the way of extra ground clearance or added elevation. Still, it's somewhat easier to obtain in as well as out of than the Screw, looks a lot better, goes 250 miles on a charge, supplies semi-autonomous Super Cruise ship as well as starts at $35K with location.
Electric Vehicles And The Future Of Transportation
Lordstown Stamina (2021). The Stamina is implied as a work truck for commercial customers, however that does not indicate we can not obtain thrilled regarding it. Besides, it has four hub-mounted electrical motors making greater than 600 combined horses, can reportedly take a trip 250 miles on a charge, and will begin at $45,000 after the tax obligation credit.
Nissan's Ariya (note the punctuation, it's not like the Video game of Thrones personality) can be the electric SUV the mainstream has been awaiting. FWD or AWD as well as as much as 389 hp join a lot of the EV techniques and also deals with Nissan developed for the Fallen leave, like the e-Pedal feature that makes one-pedal driving a breeze.
Electric Vehicles
Cadillac's future is electric; if it doesn't succeed, the brand might not have a future. The choice to give its EVs names finishing with "-iq" might have appeared better on paper, where it reminds people of "intelligence quotient," than it performs in practice, where it seems like "ick" however there's no saying that the crossover-cum-station wagon Lyriq could be a smash struck as soon as you get past the name.
The Future Of Transportation Is Autonomous & Electric
Chevrolet Corvette EV (2022). We've understood for a while that the eighth-generation Corvette would likely go hybrid; that frunk, as it turns out, is ideal for an electrical motor to drive the front wheels. But it likewise appears that Chevy is dealing with an all-electric Corvette. None besides Joe Biden discussed as much, declaring that it can do 200 miles per hr.
Ford F-150 Lightning (2022). Two-thirds of the Big 3 will be relocating right into the electrical truck realm in the future, as well as the Ford F-150 will likely be the first one there. The carmaker has made no secret of it, going so much as to disclose when it'll go on sale (mid-2022), what will certainly power it (two electrical motors), and also what kind of power it will certainly make (greater than any various other F-150 currently for sale).
Electric Vehicles Are The U.s. Auto Industry's Future
Maserati MC20 EV (2022). Maserati's brand-new supercar is a dynamo of internal-combustion splendor, but it'll also be available in an all-electric version come 2022.
Tesla Roadster (2022). Tesla hasn't offered a Roadster in more than a decade, ever before since the Lotus-based lorry that released the business faded away to include its very own in-house-developed designs. Currently, the Roadster is established to return as well as if also half of Elon Musk's usually broad promises become a reality, it'll be an auto to wow the globe.

The Future Of Cars Is Electric – But How Soon Is This Future?
Volkswagen ID.Buzz (2022). Ask a lot of Americans to name some legendary VWs, as well as probabilities are good Bus would certainly be the 2nd word out of the typical individual's lips. The iconic VW Type 2, as it was formally known, is set to get a spiritual rebirth come 2022 as an all-electric minivan.

The Future Of Cars Is Electric – But How Soon Is This Future?
However what electrical cars and trucks are coming? Allow's take a more detailed consider what you can expect to see striking the roads in the next couple of years. The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric relocates into a bigger sector to give you a little bit more area inside compared to the Zoe, while packaging in a 160k, W electric motor and 60kWh battery pack.
Electric Cars: What To Expect Between 2020 And 2030
Ford is revealing the electric variation of the F-150 on 19 Might, offering it the name Lightning. Ford had formerly claimed it would certainly be the most effective F-150 it's ever before generated, with the capability to utilize the battery as a mobile power supply. Expected to sit on VW's PPE platform, it has actually long been known that Porsche was going to make the Macan an EV - as well as a prototype has actually been out in testing.
Bentley has verified that an electrical SUV in the works as well as is most likely to be a beneficary of the Audi Artemis system that's in advancement. Little else is known, but it will be one more high luxury model for the most discerning customers. Genesis Electric motor - the high-end arm of Hyundai - has introduced its European launch, as well as encouraging 3 electric models over the next year.
Electric Vehicles
The VW ID.5 is anticipated to supply the same spec as the VW ID.4, yet with a sportback, a going down rear roofline for those who want something a lot more coupe as well as much less SUV in design. Launched at Car Shanghai, the Mercedes EQB is a key version for China, supplying seating for 7.
The Toyota concept presents a new system - shown Subaru - with the guarantee of solar charging to cover up the battery. Nothing has really been exposed, yet Toyota is rather late to the electrical car party, having actually been a leading pressure in hybrids.
The Future Of Transportation Is Autonomous & Electric
The Kia EV6 complies with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, sharing the exact same platform, but with Kia having its own spin. There's two battery choices, 58 or 77. The majority of the talk will likely have to do with the EV6 GT, nevertheless, which sets the bigger battery with four-wheel drive, for blistering efficiency, with a 0-62mph time of 3.5 secs. It will be available in late 2021.
Electric Vehicles Are The U.s. Auto Industry's Future
Land Rover is making sweeping adjustments to its business over the following few years - as well as that's resulted in the reveal of a new future platfrom - EMA. This platform has been confirmed to underpin the Exploration Sport and the Evoque and it's developed for electric cars, tip that those will both launch as electrical cars.
Arguably, the C40 is Volvo's first bespoke electrical vehicle - omitting the adapted XC40 Recharge - which's an interesting prospect. It has a 78kWh battery, guarantees 260 miles of variety as well as it comes with limitless information. That's right, Volvo wants the Android-based system in this car to be always connected, so it's removed the stress over where that link comes from.
Battery Electric Vehicle
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the very first in a new series of electrical automobiles from the company, sliding right into the prominent crossover area. There will be selections of 58 or 72.6 kWh batteries, with back or all-wheel drive. It gets a fresh brand-new layout, with a level floor as well as sliding centre console - we believe this is mosting likely to be a large seller.
Smooth layout enhances this sporting activities coupe, while the back entrances include a sense of functionality, like the Taycan which shares the exact same platform. A 93kWh battery rests in both the routine and also the RS version of this vehicle, promising blistering efficiency. It will cost from 79,000 as well as be offered throughout 2021.

2021 Audi A4 review: No-nonsense entry-level luxury

2021 Audi A4 review: No-nonsense entry-level luxury
The A4 is a bit of a looker, especially with the sportier S Line accommodations seen here.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
When a buyer first dips their toes into luxury sedans, they tend to start small. As a result, the compact-lux segment requires automakers to put forth a solid effort in order to keep those first-time buyers coming back for more. To that end, the 2021 Audi A4 brings a ton of kit to the table in an effort to stand out from the crowd.
Like
Comfortable and fun to drive
Solid consumer tech
Don’t Like
Limited storage in both cabin and trunk
Negligible fuel-economy change over 2020 model
The most notable update for the 2021 Audi A4 is the addition of a 12-volt mild-hybrid system, as well as replacing the base front-wheel-drive setup in favor of AWD across the board. Both the base 40 and the higher-output 45 variants receive this upgrade, as well as a small power bump — not that either version necessarily needed it. My tester packs the beefier version of Audi’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I4, which now produces 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
The A4 45 might not be a proper sports sedan like the peppier S4, but holy heck, it can still scoot. Between the mild-hybrid system and the engine’s own low-down torque, this four-door will jump off the line like a dog that just heard the word “outside,” especially if I swap out of the standard Comfort mode, which softens throttle response in order to highlight smooth, efficient driving. The mild-hybrid system does a great job in the background, helping cut the engine earlier in deceleration while starting it back up smoothly. The seven-speed automatic transmission is a little slow to respond in certain situations, but otherwise it’s content to hang out behind the scenes. Light steering and easy-to-modulate pedals further enhance the experience.
The EPA rates the 2021 A4 45 at 24 miles per gallon city and 31 mpg highway, numbers that I have no problem achieving, even in gross, wintry conditions. The confounding thing is, though, the EPA rates the outgoing 2020 A4 with all-wheel drive at 32 mpg highway, so… where’s the gains from the mild hybrid? Sure, the slight electrification adds benefits like extending stop-start operating, but according to the feds, that extra bit of mechanical complexity is a wash.
The ride in my tester is a little on the harsh side, but that’s by design. Not only does this car include 19-inch alloy wheels ($800), which limits tire sidewall size and inhibits bad-road mitigation, it also rocks a $250 sport suspension that makes sprightly driving a bit more engaging by flattening out the handling. Those looking for a more comfort-oriented ride will want to skip over these packages, but it doesn’t go too far in one direction; the experience is still sufficiently damped on good roads.
Even if you don’t spec the larger wheels, there are still ways to gussy up the 2021 Audi A4. This car also carries the $500 Black Optic package, an affordably priced upgrade that ditches the exterior chrome in favor of gloss-black trim. The 2020 refresh did wonders for the A4, giving it a much fresher face that better matches larger offerings like the A6 and A8. It’s still on the anonymous side, but low-key isn’t a bad thing; besides, there are still fun flourishes here and there, like the miniature light show that takes place in the matrix-style LED headlights (part of the top Prestige trim) every time I lock or unlock the car.
The interior doesn’t escape the upcharge potential, either. For $500, Audi will throw in a flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminum trim and sportier seats wrapped in leather and Alcantara suede. It’s a sharp little combination that adds a surprising amount of visual oomph for not that much money. The seats are supportive without being tight, and heated suede or cloth always feels better to me in the winter than chilly leather. There’s plenty of space for my six-foot Gumby frame up front, and the lack of a “sporty” cut roofline means the back seats aren’t too shabby, either, although legroom is a little tight.
My biggest complaint about the interior involves storage space, or a lack thereof. The 12 cubic-foot trunk is more than enough for one or two people, but it lags behind competitors from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, even if it’s only by a bit. The interior’s stowage options are limited, too; my tall-but-not-wide thermos has trouble fitting in the small cup holders without smacking dashboard controls, and the door pockets aren’t wide enough to handle it, either. The armrest folds up to reveal a small tray that’s good for little more than a mask and a phone, with the wireless charger taking up most of that space.
The A4’s cabin is proof that simple interiors don’t need to be boring, necessarily.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
If the interior is good, the 2021 Audi A4’s cabin tech makes it great. All trims come standard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen running the latest single-screen iteration of Audi’s MMI infotainment system, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I had high praise for the dual-screen version of this getup when it first debuted, and the pared-back version here doesn’t scrimp on features, responsiveness or aesthetics. It boots up quickly, and it takes very little time to get used to. My Prestige-trim tester also sports USB ports for the rear seats, in addition to the two up front. Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, which replaces the gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch screen, arrives in the midtrim Premium Plus model, and as always, it reduces distraction by offering up navigation, audio and other information just below my usual eye level.
Audi made sure to load up the A4 with plenty of its latest and greatest safety systems, too. Standard kit includes forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, while moving up to the Prestige trim throws most modern conveniences into the fray, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a bird’s-eye camera and parking sensors. While it’s plenty easy to keep this compact sedan between the lines, whether on the highway or in your local CVS parking lot, a little extra piece of mind goes a long way. Props to Audi for having an impressive resolution on its backup camera, to boot.
Audi’s Google Earth overlay is always fun to get lost in. Just, you know, not while you’re driving.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
The 2021 Audi A4 starts out pretty affordable, with a base price of $40,145, which isn’t bad considering all that standard tech and now-standard all-wheel drive. However, piling on the options can make the window sticker silly in a hurry. In range-topping Prestige trim with a few extra add-ons, my evaluation model has lifted its out-the-door price to $53,840, which is about a grand away from the price of a base-model A6. But with two engine options and three trims, there’s bound to be a middle ground that should suit most buyers.
Keeping up with the Joneses is not easy in the compact-luxury-sedan segment, but the 2021 A4 is doing a great job of it. The BMW 3 Series was recently refreshed, and it strikes a proper balance between soft and sporty, but I find the corporate interior uninspired and lacking the quality and refinement of the A4. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a damn fine luxury car, but its current iteration feels a little behind the times; still, that won’t be a problem in the near future as an all-new generation is slated to debut for the 2022 model year. The 2021 Audi A4 is in the right place at the right time with the right equipment, resulting in a small luxury sedan that doesn’t skip out on the important stuff.

2021 BMW 4 Series revealed with mild-hybrid power and, uh, that face
Yes, that face. BMW From its turbocharged powertrains to its robust cabin tech to its advanced driver-assistance systems, there are a lot of reasons to like the 2021 4 Series, which BMW officially revealed Tuesday. But the one thing everyone's going to get hung up on is the styling -- specifically, that enormous grille.
Now playing: Watch this: 2021 BMW 4 Series: More than just a giant grille 2:59
Follow your nose
Yes, the 2021 BMW 4 Series has the enlarged kidneys first seen on the Concept 4 showcar from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as the all-electric i4. It's definitely... a look. And it's one we don't like, at least in photos. BMW says the grille "is framed by surfaces with a three-dimensional mesh structure," so there's at least some interesting detail, though it kind of loses any luster it might've had by bolting the European front plate in the middle. (It's going to look awful in US press fleet spec, with a bright yellow New Jersey plate smack dab in the middle.)The 2021 4 Series will be offered in 430i, 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive models, the latter of which gets darker exterior trim and larger side air intakes on the front fascia. LED headlights are standard across all models, and the shape just doesn't work with those giant buck teeth in the middle. Compared to an equivalent 3 Series sedan, the new 4 Series is 2.2 inches longer, 1 inch wider and 2.2 inches lower. But it rides on the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. See how it stacks up to its rivals in our spec comparison.Luckily, the rest of the 4 Series looks pretty darn good, with a tapering roofline similar to that of the larger 8 Series coupe. All 4 Series coupes come standard with 18-inch wheels, though a variety of 19-inch options are available, as are M Sport brakes with either blue or red calipers, an aero kit and a rear lip spoiler. The LED taillights have an interesting light signature not unlike that of the recently revealed 2021 Acura TLX, and honestly, we think the new 4 Series looks best from the rear three-quarter view.
2020 BMW 430i vs. 2021 BMW 430i
2020 BMW 430i 2021 BMW 430i Engine 2.0-liter turbo I4 2.0-liter turbo I4 Power 248 hp 255 hp Torque 258 lb-ft 294 lb-ft Transmission 8-speed auto 8-speed auto 0-60 mph 5.5 sec 5.5 sec Top speed 155 mph 155 mph Wheelbase 110.6 in 112.2 in Length 182.7 in 187.9 in Width 79.4 in 81.9 in Height 54.2 in 54.6 in Weight 3,574 lbs 3,578 lbs Cargo capacity 15.7 cu-ft 12.0 cu-ft
Tons of tech
Step inside, and the 4 Series' design is far less polarizing. The cabin is largely the same as what you'll find in the 3 Series sedan -- the 4 Series' four-door sibling -- with leather surfaces available in a range of colors, flush-mounted controls on the center console and several different wood and metal inlay options. Being a two-door coupe, the rear seats aren't super spacious, but they can at least be folded flat to accommodate longer items from the 12-cubic-foot trunk. The 4 Series comes standard with analog gauges and a 5.1-inch color display in the instrument cluster, as well as an 8.8-inch center touchscreen for the iDrive 7 infotainment suite. Opt for the Live Cockpit Professional package and you upgrade to a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge display, like the one offered in BMW's other models, as well as a 10.2-inch central multimedia screen. Regardless of models, navigation comes standard, with real-time traffic data from BMW Maps. And hey, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard -- finally! -- and wirelessly, no less.As with the 3 Series, the 4 Series gets BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant artificial intelligence tech, activated by saying, "Hey, BMW" -- kind of like the "Hey, Mercedes" function found in Benz's MBUX. Unlike MBUX, though, BMW's system is really just for controlling vehicle functions and working with the online navigation data. It's still useful, just not as robust. In other words, no, your BMW can't tell you a joke.Like the 3 Series sedan, the 4 Series can be had with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.2-inch infotainment screen. BMW Elsewhere on the tech front, the 4 Series gets the same driver-assistance systems as the new 3 Series. Standard equipment includes lane-departure warning, frontal collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights and speed limit information. You can add the company's Driving Assistance Professional Package, which gets you full-speed adaptive cruise control as well as Extended Traffic Jam Assist, a Level 2 driver-assistance feature that adds lane-keeping assistance to make highway commutes easier.A particularly cool tech upgrade is the optional Parking Assistance Package, which not only includes a 3D surround camera, but has a back-up assistant that actually memorizes the last 150 feet of your journey at speeds below 20 mph, and can automatically trace the same path in reverse. For the 4 Series, this package adds BMW's new drive recorder, which can automatically capture 20 seconds of video around the moment of an impact and save it to the car's hard drive. Your insurance claims adjuster will love it.
2020 BMW 440i vs. 2021 BMW M440i
2020 BMW 440i xDrive 2021 BMW M440i xDrive Engine 3.0-liter turbo I6 3.0-liter turbo I6 Power 320 hp 382 hp Torque 330 lb-ft 364 lb-ft Transmission 8-speed auto 8-speed auto 0-60 mph 4.6 sec 4.3 sec Top speed 149 mph 155 mph Wheelbase 110.6 in 112.2 in Length 182.7 in 188.0 in Width 79.4 in 81.9 in Height 54.8 in 54.8 in Weight 3,827 lbs 3,977 lbs Cargo capacity 15.7 cu-ft 12.0 cu-ft The roofline is very similar to that of the 8 Series. BMW
Turbo power with mild-hybrid assist
The 430i comes with BMW's 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine, delivering 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard but, as its name suggests, the 430i xDrive comes with all-wheel drive. These models accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 and 5.3 seconds, respectively. Regardless of driveline, the 2.0-liter turbo engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M440i xDrive, meanwhile, uses a 3.0-liter turbo I6 engine, which now has a 48-volt mild-hybrid battery, which delivers supplemental electric boost during acceleration and smooths out the action of the stop-start system. (The engine can now shut off below 9 mph rather than waiting until the car comes to a complete stop.) All told, the 3.0-liter I6 produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. Its standard all-wheel drive and M Sport rear differential allow the M440i to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Once again, an eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available. All 4 Series models get the same hydraulic-lift shock absorbers as the new 3 Series, which we love. This hardware smooths out road vibrations and reduces body movement, but doesn't give up any overall feedback or handling prowess. Compared to the 3 Series, the 4 Series has increased damping forces, firmer springs and larger anti-roll bars, and the coupe sits 0.4 inches lower to the ground. The M440i comes standard with an M Sport suspension, with an even stiffer tune. Finally, the Adaptive M chassis option allows for automatic adjustment of the adaptive dampers, though if our experience with the 3 Series is anything to go on, we think most buyers will prefer the standard and M Sport suspension setups just fine. Speed-sensitive power steering is standard on the 4 Series, while M Sport and M440i models get variable-ratio steering.Yes, a proper M4 is coming, too, but we won't see that version until after the four-door M3 debuts, likely sometime in 2021.The rear three-quarter is definitely this car's best angle. BMW
Arriving in October
The 2021 4 Series will go on sale globally in October, and it'll be priced from $46,595 in the US, including $995 for destination. The 430i xDrive will come in at $48,595 and the M440i xDrive will cost $59,495. This represents a $650 increase over the 2020 430i and 430i xDrive coupes, while the 2021 M440i is a full $5,150 more expensive than the 2020 440i. BMW's two-door 4 Series will continue to fight its long-time rivals, the Audi A5 and S5, and the Mercedes-Benz C300 and AMG C43. The 4 Series convertible will surely follow in due course, as will the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe. Rest assured, they'll pack all the same performance and tech. And they'll definitely have that huge grille, too. Read More Read the full article

BMW i4 details revealed BMW i4 details revealed A range of more than 370 miles is likely from the new i4 BMW has announced details of its forthcoming i4 - a pure-electric four-door coupe due in 2021. It will feature the company's next generation electric powertrain, enabling a range of around 370 miles on a charge. The fifth-generation systems are set to debut on next year's iX3, and will then appear on the i4. BMW is pitching its next pure-electric models at the core range - the 3/4 Series for the i4, and the SUV equivalent in the iX3. Power from the electric motors in the i4 comes in at 390 kW (530 hp) which is equivalent to the current V8 available in the similar ranges. As such, performance will be more than brisk, with the 0-62mph time completed in around 4.0 seconds. The battery is roughly 80 kWh in capacity, promising an efficient set-up considering the Ford Mustang Mach-E launched recently achieves a similar range but from almost 100 kWh. Ultra-rapid charging will be possible at 150 kW, allowing a top-up to 80% in a bit over half an hour. All figures are approximates so far, as more precise technical specifications are yet to be confirmed. In terms of rivals, the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 will be the closest of those models currently known about, both in terms of driving range and likely price.
