2021 Audi RS Q8 provides supercar thrills for the whole family

2021 Audi RS Q8 provides supercar thrills for the whole family
High-performance SUVs with coupe-like rooflines are definitely a fully fledged class of their own, with the BMW X6 M Competition, Mercedes-AMG GLE63 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo available today. All boast a dash of additional style over traditionally shaped SUVs, not to mention heaps of power and punched-up handling capabilities. The newcomer in this class is the Audi RS Q8, a performance CUV so well-honed it now holds the production SUV lap record of 7 minutes and 42.2 seconds around Germany’s Nürburgring.
Like
Big performance and daily comfort
Sleek looks inside and out
Excellent cabin tech
Don’t Like
Lacks drama
Light steering
Can get real pricey fast
Lower-key performer
What does the Audi’s Nürburgring lap record mean? To car dorks it means bragging rights. For everyone else, not much. But this basic tale of the tape is something people of all automotive knowledge bases will likely understand. The heart and soul of this achievement is the RS Q8’s engine: a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 shoving out 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque with the latter having your back from 2,200 to 4,500 rpm.
Channeling power to all of the RS Q8’s wheels is an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowing this SUV to reach 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 190 mph. (Note: This top speed is only unlocked if you spring for the upgraded carbon ceramic brakes.) All things considered, those are bonkers stats. But you know what? The BMW, Mercedes and Porsche all replicate that 0-to-60-mph time.
2021 Audi RS Q8 review: Fast, fashionable and practical
See all photos
In the real world, the Audi’s drivetrain surprisingly doesn’t behave like an angry, hyperactive brute. From a dig, the RS Q8 doesn’t launch with crazy gusto. Instead, it smoothly gets out of the hole, pulls strong to the engine’s 6,750-rpm redline and rattles off seamless, well-timed gear changes. If you aren’t paying close attention, it’s easy to get well past posted speed limits on surface streets, thanks to the progressive throttle tuning and low gurgle from the exhaust. You get civilized aggression from the powertrain. The RS Q8 is never loud, shouty or harsh when going about its business, though I wish it were a bit more raw and loud in Dynamic mode.
Continuing the smooth theme, technological bits like a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and cylinder deactivation go unnoticed. There’s no wonkiness in the brake pedal and you’d be hard pressed to tell when the V8 is running on some or all of its cylinders. Those efforts contribute to EPA-estimated 13 mpg city and 19 mpg highway ratings, putting the RS Q8 on par with the rest of its competitive set. I observed 13.1 mpg during a week of testing.
Dialed-up dynamics
From a performance standpoint, the RS Q8’s handling chops are its most impressive attribute. To help this 5,490-pounder hustler harder it’s got a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, torque-vectoring rear differential, air suspension, all-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars and upgraded 23-inch Y-spoke wheels with 295/35 series tires (22-inchers come standard).
A higher handling IQ comes courtesy in part from some massive 23-inch Continental tires.
Jon Wong/Roadshow
Put the Audi Drive Select system into its Dynamic setting and the RS Q8 hunkers down and hangs on tight around cloverleaf on-ramps. Credit the tires’ big ol’ contact patches and all the performance features’ technological wizardry for all the grip and composure this crossover exhibits when driven hard. Getting the RS Q8 sloppy on the street requires caning it way harder than you responsibly should.
Instilling even more confidence behind the wheel are the aforementioned carbon ceramic brakes. The $9,000 option means there are 10-piston calipers clamping down on monstrous 17.3-inch rotors up front and still-darn-big 14.6-inch rotors with single-piston calipers around back. Like everything else, pressing down on the left pedal doesn’t yield crazy initial bite, allowing for smooth brake applications. A little more pressure unlocks the big stopping muscle when you want to go deeper into brake zones or perform panic stops.
In normal Audi fashion, lightly weighted steering is a sticking point in Dynamic. I prefer having a touch more heft in the wheel, but I have no complaints about the steering’s responses. That’s not to say there aren’t times when the light steering is beneficial — when you put the car in Comfort mode for normal commuting, for example. Speaking of commuting, the RS Q8 does fine here, with the adaptive dampers taking the edge off all but the biggest roadway hazards. In addition to the great grip they provide, the big Continental tires deserve kudos for their lack of noise rolling down the road.
Weightier steering feel for the RS Q8 is on the wish list.
Jon Wong/Roadshow
RS style and tech
This RS Q8 painted Daytona Grey Pearl with its extra optional styling goodies is certainly a looker. The changes to the RS over standard Q8 models aren’t super drastic, with more aggressive bumpers, honeycomb grille inserts, oval exhaust tips and slicker wheels. Add in a generous carbon fiber diet on the front lip, grille surround, mirror caps, tailgate trim and rear bumper valance, and blacked-out details sprinkled about give the RS Q8 a low-key, but still sinister vibe.
Head inside the RS Q8 and the design is simplistic with lots of straight lines. The front seats offer lots of support to hold riders in place with RS honeycomb accent stitching on the inserts. These chairs offer a massage function with seven different kneading patterns that I love.
Build quality in this Audi is first-rate with lots of high-end materials placed throughout the cabin, like Alcantara on the headliner and door panels, matte carbon fiber dash trim and leather-wrapped and stitched surfaces for most of the big panels. If you’re worried about the faster roofline cutting into second-row headroom, don’t be, because there’s still sufficient space for normal adults. Cargo room also isn’t too shabby with a healthy 30.5 cubic feet on offer that grows to 60.7 cubic feet with the back seats folded.
A simple design and fantastic build quality highlight the RS Q8’s interior.
Jon Wong/Roadshow
Taking care of infotainment in the RS Q8 is Audi’s MMI Touch Response system that is simply stellar. The dual-touchscreen setup has an 8.6-inch display on the bottom for climate function controls and a 10.1-inch display up top for things like the rockin’ 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio setup, navigation with Google Maps imagery, phone functions and a Wi-Fi hotspot. It’s all intuitive to work through, offering quick responses to inputs and haptic feedback to let you know a command has been entered. The clean center console layout is void of many hard controls, but it does retain a traditional volume knob, which is a very good thing.
On the driver-assist technology front, all RS Q8s get standard forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, a 360-degree camera and auto high beams. A $1,750 Driver Assistance Package adds a few more tricks to this Audi’s arsenal like a great adaptive cruise control system, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and a head-up display.
The MMI Touch Response system is a Roadshow favorite.
Jon Wong/Roadshow
How I’d spec it
This test car is a well-kitted-out RS Q8. It’s got the aforementioned $9,000 carbon ceramic brakes, $4,500 carbon fiber exterior bits, $2,950 black outside trim and bigger wheels, $1,750 Driver Assistance Package, $595 paint job and $4,800 worth of interior extras. On top of all that, it also has a $750 Towing Package enabling it to pull 7,700 pounds. Add in a $1,095 destination charge and you get the not-so-unsubstantial $140,590 as-tested price of this car.
For my ideal spec, I’d spring for the $595 Daytona Gray paint job and the $3,250 Black Optic Package. On the inside I need the massaging seats that are part of the $3,150 Luxury package that also requires you to equip the $2,000 Executive Package that gets me soft-close doors, the head-up display and acoustic glass. This pushes my Audi to a cool $124,590, which is expensive, but certainly more palatable.
The 2021 Audi RS Q8 starts at $115,595, including $1,095 for destination.
Jon Wong/Roadshow
Radical family wagon
Of the swoopy midsize performance SUVs available today, the Audi RS Q8 is a standout in several categories. I think exterior styling trumps the BMW X6 M, Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe and the Porsche Cayenne Coupe. The Audi also gets my vote for cabin design and technology over the BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. It isn’t, however, my winner in the performance column; the Cayenne Turbo Coupe is a bit more involving from behind the wheel.
In the end, though, the RS Q8 my top pick. It’s a head-turner with a great cabin, best-in-class tech and offers all the space and comfort a family should reasonably need. That’s enough to outweigh the less emotional drive experience, considering this car’s main goal is to be daily-driven. But really, none of these performance SUV-coupes are bad, all offering sub-4-second 0-to-60-mph times and physics-defying handling. Pick the one you like best, and if it isn’t the Audi, I’ll be here to remind you that yours doesn’t hold the Nürburgring record.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe is more versatile than you might think
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/the-2021-mercedes-amg-gle63-coupe-is-more-versatile-than-you-might-think-2/
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe is more versatile than you might think
Tumblr media
That tapered roofline adds style but doesn’t take away too much cargo space.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe’s big wheels, tapering roofline and shapely backside are sure to grab your attention. This is an undeniably trendy, high-style vehicle. But what lurks behind this swoopy SUV’s retro-inspired Panamericana grille is the real star of the show.
Like
Comfortable, classy interior
World-class twin-turbo V8
Effortless acceleration
Don’t Like
Annoyingly wide door sills
MBUX complexities
Overeager brakes
Nestled between the GLE63’s front fenders is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Hand assembled by the craftspeople in Affalterbach, Germany, this jewel of an engine is smoother than creamy peanut butter, delivering a stomping 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, more than enough to put the hurt on rivals like the Audi RS Q8 and BMW X6 M. That’s also enough sauce to rocket this coupe-ish crossover to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and onward to a terminal velocity of 174 mph, though curiously, the GLE63 S doesn’t feel as quick as the numbers suggest. This Mercedes is so refined and quiet you’re almost always going at least 10 mph faster than you think, even when the active exhaust system is uncorked.
Helping deliver that performance is the automaker’s EQ-Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which provides up to 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. EQ-Boost also smooths out gearchanges and aids with regenerative braking. The system’s integrated starter-generator is sandwiched between the engine and nine-speed transmission, where it takes up little space. The whole shebang is pretty much invisible; the only time you’re really aware of EQ-Boost is during engine stop-start events, which are some of the smoothest in the business.
That transmission changes gears with sports-car immediacy and is very responsive to requests from the paddle shifters. Still, its performance can be somewhat irregular, particularly at low speeds where there’s often a slight disconnect between the accelerator pedal and what the gearbox is doing. The vehicle’s overeager brakes are also a bit bothersome. With the front rotors measuring nearly 16 inches in diameter, their stopping power is undeniable, they’re just a bit too touchy in everyday driving.
Active Roll Stabilization along with adaptive damping, an air suspension and even active engine mounts are new additions for 2021, and together they keep the GLE63 S Coupe’s body flatter than Florida while tackling corners. The suspension does a commendable job delivering a good ride, though I’d like to feel a little more delineation between the various settings. Comfort is firm yet nicely isolated, but cranking it up to Sport or Sport Plus doesn’t make the ride all that much stiffer. You’ll feel road imperfections to be sure, but they’re never pounding.
This engine is a real honey.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The GLE63 S Coupe is well balanced and feels luxury-car refined even in its starchiest settings. Unfortunately, the steering is forgettably ordinary. It’s light and a bit imprecise, which is no help in a vehicle that doesn’t track very well. This Mercedes tends to wander, even on smooth, straight pavement, which means you have to make course corrections to avoid kissing the lines and irritating the lane-keeping system. Roadshow social media editor Daniel Golson made the same comment in his review of the similar but less potent 2021 GLE53 Coupe, which also rolled on staggered-width AMG wheels, though the ones on this example are 1 inch smaller in diameter, clocking in at just 21 inches.
Given its emphasis on sportiness, you can’t expect great fuel economy from this Mercedes. Accordingly, it stickers at 15 miles per gallon city and 19 mpg highway, however, in pretty heavy-footed driving, I’ve managed to average around 18.4, a good bit better than the combined rating of 17 mpg.
As a top-shelf luxury vehicle, this Mercedes comes with a broad complement of driver-assistance tech. Adaptive LED headlamps with automatic high beams, active parking assist and blind-spot monitoring are all standard equipment. The $1,950 Driver Assistance Package Plus throws features like active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition and adaptive cruise control with lane centering into the mix, and that last item works phenomenally well. The GLE63 S Coupe’s adaptive cruise control is super smooth and more situationally aware than an undercover police officer. It seemingly always knows what’s going on and how to respond, plus the lane-centering feature is one of the best I’ve ever experienced, making the vehicle track practically like a monorail.
A couple things could be improved, but this interior is a pleasant place no matter which seat you’re in.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
This Mercedes-AMG’s interior is a lovely place, rife with premium leathers, laser-straight stitching and no shortage of amenities including standard heated and ventilated front seats, which are as comfortable as a La-Z-Boy recliner. A Burmester sound system is included, too, as is wireless phone charging and embedded navigation. Unfortunately, some of the GLE63 S Coupe’s interior elements aren’t quite as nice as they should be for a vehicle that starts at $117,000. Nothing is insultingly low-rent, but the climate controls, gear-selector and turn-signal stalks as well as some of the secondary switches just don’t feel six-figure sturdy.
When it comes to interior tech, you get a pair of 12.3-inch displays mounted in a single housing that runs across most of the dashboard. One of these screens serves as a reconfigurable digital instrument cluster, the other handles infotainment duties. For better or worse, the familiar MBUX multimedia array is how you interact with many of the vehicle’s features. This system is both pretty and performant, though it’s not my favorite. It offers way too much functionality and feels like it requires a keyboard and mouse to properly use, which is not what you want while driving. Fortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and Mercedes has not switched to hyper-annoying touch-sensitive control pads on the steering wheel like it has on some of its other vehicles, including the E450 All Terrain — at least, not yet.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe is a lot like a batch of dough that didn’t rise. Next to the conventional GLE SUV, its roof is noticeably deflated. That tapering top adds visual pizzazz, though, it eats into cargo space and rear-seat headroom, but these deficits don’t ruin the vehicle, not by any stretch. Second-row noggin space is reduced by 1.8 inches, but there’s still plenty, even for taller adults. Cargo space behind the aft bench clocks in at 27.5 cubic feet, which swells to 63.2 cubes when you fold the rear backrest down. In comparison, the GLE63 S serves up 39.3 and 74.9 cubic feet, respectively. Judging between these two utility vehicles is like comparing pitas to baguettes, breads that are clearly different form factors but both are delicious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unless you need as much cargo space as possible, the GLE63 S Coupe is a perfectly versatile utility vehicle.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe’s base price is just about $117,000, or about 40 grand more than the less potent GLE53 Coupe. As for this example, it checks out for $131,430 including requisite delivery fees, which total $1,050. A few options pad the bottom line, things like that $1,950 driver-assistance package, a head-up display ($1,100), the fancier Burmester High-End Surround Sound System ($4,550) and the Warmth and Comfort Package ($1,050), to name a few.
With thundering performance, a comfortable and refined cabin, plus plenty of style both inside and out, the coupe-ified crossover is well-rounded and surprisingly livable. If you value style over capaciousness get the GLE63 S Coupe, but if versatility matters more, stick with the standard GLE SUV. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Most New BMW Models are Apple CarKey Compatible
Tumblr media
BMW just gave Apple users another reason to consider one of its cars.
Most BMWs built after July 1, 2020, will offer compatibility with Apple's newly introduced CarKey phone-as-key tech. The feature was announced this week at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference. BMW sits at the vanguard of Apple CarKey's breakout in the auto industry, which sees Near-Field Communication (NFC)-based phone-as-key protocols built into the electronics giant's iOS smartphone operating system and allows iPhones running the latest software to lock, unlock, and start user-registered vehicles.
A 2021 BMW 5 Series sedan demonstrated the CarKey feature at Apple's big event. The technological display inadvertently highlighted the digital key's limitations as much as its benefits. How so? Well, the holy grail of phone-as-key tech would be the ability to keep your phone in your pocket while entering a vehicle, Ă  la today's proximity key fobs that allow drivers to lock, unlock, and start their car without ever needing to grasp the physical key itself. In its current form, CarKey (or as BMW dubs it, "BMW Digital Key for the iPhone") must be brought within 1.5 inches of the driver's side door handle to lock or unlock the vehicle. To start the car, a user must place the phone on the center console's wireless charging pad. Both actions, you might notice, require the user to physically grasp the phone.
It seems BMW and Apple wanted to get the digital key tech out into the marketplace as soon as possible, and thus were forced to rely on today's Digital Key Specification 2.0 for Near-Field Communication (NFC) protocol to make that happen. In its announcement of Digital Key for iPhone, BMW admits NFC Specification 2.0 was just released in May and that a next-generation setup using Ultra Wideband tech is already being developed. UWB tech, as we covered earlier this year at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, is both more secure than NFC and allows the phone to stay in one's pocket, relying on accurate location tracking to determine when a user (and the phone) is close enough to unlock or lock the doors and start the car—all the while ensuring users' hands remain free of bulky phones or keys.
The good news is that BMW Digital Key for iPhone offers some neat innovations to the typical car key formula. A "key"—essentially a pairing between a phone and a vehicle—is stored in Apple's Wallet app (where Apple Pay credit card info and items such as airline boarding passes are kept) and is secured by your phone's lock screen. That means Face ID facial recognition and Touch ID fingerprint scanning can be used to ensure no ordinary jabroni can run off with your phone and enter or drive off with your car. (An "Express Mode" enables the use of the phone as a key without requiring the iPhone to be unlocked prior to use.) BMW and Apple also worked with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to determine and set "global standards" for its digital key function, further helping minimize development clutter among other automakers that will surely want to roll out Apple CarKey-friendly tech, too.
Cooler still, Apple CarKey allows users to share their digital car keys with friends via iMessage. BMW's setup even affords vehicle owners the opportunity to share their car's digital key with up to five other users and includes "a configurable car access option for young drivers, which restricts top speed, horsepower, maximum radio volume, and more." Worried about your iPhone going dead and being unable to get into your BMW? That scenario is covered by Digital Key for iPhone's ability to register users' phones for up to five hours after a low-battery shut-off. The BMW Digital Key is also compatible with Apple Watch, presumably meaning one needn't pull out their phone to lock or unlock the car. Instead, Apple Watch wearers should be able to place their wrist-worn tech near there car's door to gain access.
BMW customers interested in the CarKey feature should know that they'll need an iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, or SE with the upcoming iOS 13.6 software update (Digital Key will be included with iOS 14 more widely). Want to use your Apple Watch? Better have an Apple Watch 5, the latest model, with WatchOS 6.2.8. Once you have your Apple arsenal sorted, you'll want to shop these BMW models (those that are sold in the U.S., that is) that are compatible with Digital Key for iPhone:
BMW 1 Series (not available in the U.S. )
BMW 2 Series
BMW 3 Series
BMW 4 Series
BMW 5 Series and M5
BMW 6 Series (no longer available in the U.S. )
BMW 8 Series and M8
BMW X5 and X5 M
BMW X6 and X6 M
BMW X7
BMW Z4

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe’s Pricing Ducks Between BMW, Porsche Competitors
Crossover coupes make little sense. But judging from the fact there are several of them on the market, customers are obviously at least somewhat interested in these automotive oxymorons. One such example is the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE S Coupe, which is coming to dealerships in late 2020. Prices start at $117,050, making it a few thousand dollars more expensive than the regular, boxier GLE 63 S SUV.
The crossover coupe is not cheap, but it’s a nice middle ground between competitors from BMW and Porsche. The BMW X6 M50i, which delivers 523 horsepower, starts at $86,645. On the other end of the price spectrum sits the 541-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe, which goes for $133,250. The Mercedes is more powerful than both raked-butt vehicles, making 603 horsepower from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. Power is routed to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox. According to Mercedes, it takes 3.7 seconds for the vehicle to reach 60 mph, and you can go as fast as 174 mph.
Inside the cabin, the GLE 63 S Coupe offers the abundant luxuries you’d expect. Standard features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen of the same size. There’s also a standard Burmester surround sound system, wireless charging, 64-color ambient lighting, navigation, and heated and ventilated front seats. On the safety front, the model comes with a host of features including active lane keep assist, blind spot assist, active parking assist, and active LED headlamps.

New BMW X6 2021 Interior, Price, Release Date
New Post has been published on https://www.bmwcartrend.com/new-bmw-x6-2021-interior-price-release-date/
New BMW X6 2021 Interior, Price, Release Date
Tumblr media
New BMW X6 2021 Interior, Price, Release Date – The first product started in 2008, by using a quite cutting edge design, which happens to be something quite strange to get German carmakers. Any product quickly drawn all of the athletic-concentrated SUV enthusiasts, countless producers experimented with a similar design approach, but none was able to obtain exactly the same good results. The first era on this crossover was generated until finally 2014 whenever we found an entire redesign. The 2nd technology characteristics better still attribute, although the firm would like to have top placement on the market.
With this event, BMW X6 2021 will get a variety of novelties. It will probably be a vintage the middle of-period recharge, that will incorporate visual changes, in addition to interior updates. As a consequence of an update, it must arrive a bit sooner than usual.
BMW X6 2021 Redesign

This engine will be capable of producing a sufficient 335 worth of horsepower and torque of 330-pound feet. Due to the distinctive nature of the turbocharged inline-6 engine used by the 2021 BMW X6, boosts at low and high RPMs are achievable with a twin-scroll turbo. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe is more versatile than you might think

Ford Mach-E: It’s a Mustang, an EV (Yes), an SUV (Gasp), Very Quick, and the Future of Ford
LOS ANGELES — The 2021 Mustang Mach-E announced here Sunday night in Elon Musk’s backyard is a compact crossover that runs on electricity, for as much as 300 miles. There is no gasoline-engine option. More than that, Mach-E is Ford’s bet on the future shifting away from combustion engines, toward electrification, and toward driver assistance that becomes self-driving if the driver wants it and the technology is ready.
Mach-E is also the answer to the question of what Jim Hackett has been doing at Ford since taking over as CEO 30 months ago. Turns out he was rebuilding the company and chose to use the most beloved Ford name of the past half-century to be Ford’s stalking horse for electrification. It worked: There would not have been 500 journalists and fans in attendance if this was the 2021 Ford Escape Electric. Which is what this new vehicle might have been called before Hackett found Ford’s EV plans to be timid.
If this electrification push sounds like Ford is going all California and sucking up to environmentalists, relax. There will be plenty of combustion engine cars for decades to come, including traditional 2+2 Mustang sport coupes. Just not forever. And be warned that an electrified Ford F-150 is in the offing. Hashtag OMG.
What Exactly Is the Mach-E?
Here’s the nitty-gritty on the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It is a compact SUV able to fit four or five adults fairly comfortably in both rows of seats. It bears some Mustang styling cues from some angles. It. Does. Not. Replace. The. Mustang. 2+2. Sports. Car.
It is in prototype form now, solid and numerous enough to allow journalists to take part in test drives, but not numerous enough to let them drive on the test drives. The first versions arrive in fall 2020 and all five variants will be available by spring 2020. They will cost $45,000 to $65,000 plus options, every Mach-E will have significant driver assists, and some higher trims will have Level 2 self-driving on par with Nissan ProPilot Assist, possibly on par with Cadillac Super Cruise, the industry standard.
There are two battery sizes initially, driving ranges of 200-300 miles, rear or all-wheel-drive, and a performance edition that will blow the socks off the vast majority of the 10 million Mustangs built since 1964. None of which will make traditionalist Mustang fanboys any happier — it’s a freakin’ SUV, many will say (Ford agrees) — but at least they can commiserate with the Corvette fans appalled to see their pride and joy will now be a mid-engine sports car. As if that’s a bad thing.
On a brief ride around Hawthorne Airport, the prototype rode well on city streets. There was an occasional harsh jolt when the Mach E traversed a piece of less-than-smooth California highway. Ford probably should offer an adaptive suspension but will not. Inside the snug airport on a closed-off taxiway, the Mach E charged through a slalom course with very little body roll, and a 0-60 mph run that wasn’t timed suggests Ford will be able to achieve sub-4-second results with the more powerful versions.
It is reasonably roomy in the back seat, about what you’d expect from the current generation of compact SUVs that don’t cramp second-row passengers. Here’s how the Mach-E compares. While a vehicle’s size class is usually based on cubic feet of passenger and luggage space, a vehicle that’s 180-190 inches long is generally seen as a compact vehicle.
Ford Mustang Mach-E: 186″ long (117″ wheelbase) x 74″ wide x 63″ high, 32.5 cu. ft. cargo space
Ford Mustang: 188″ L (107″ WB) x 75″ W x 55 H, 13.5 cu. ft trunk
Ford Escape: 181″ L (107″ WB) x 74″ W x 66″ H, 33.5 cu. ft. cargo
In 2003, the tears of Porsche traditionalists fell heavily and stained their tassled loafers when the Porsche Cayenne landed here. SUVs now are two-thirds or Porsche’s US sales (sales shown for 2019’s first three quarters).
Will an Electric Mustang Ruin the Pony Car Mystique? (No)
Can Mustang fans gain solace from fans of competing sporting marques? Others have suffered imagined slights and survived: Porschephiles feared Armageddon in 2003 when the Cayenne SUV joined the family of Porsche sports cars. The Cayenne and Macan, the compact SUV that arrived in 2015, rank 1-2 in Porsche sales in the US while the cars run 3-4-5 (chart above). Without SUVs Porsche might be little more than an R&D company for other automakers.
At BMW, SUVs are 47 percent of sales through the first three quarters of 2019, up from 36 percent the year before, as sedan sales shrink in the US. And Chevrolet Corvette fans have their own crisis, that of the engine being moved from in front to midships, just behind the driver, for the C8 Corvette due early 2020.
No, none of these comparison cars are battery electric vehicles. But as those sporty brands pondered the future — in this case embracing SUVs and crossovers as legitimate upscale/sport vehicles — they decided the worst change be may the change where you stand still and watch the world sail past you.
Electrification won’t make a Mustang worse. It makes the Mustang faster. “We’re looking at mid-three-second 0-60 [mph] times,” said executive chairman Bill Ford Jr., speaking of the Mach-E Mustang, which looks like a Mustang from some angles and also bears some resemblance to a BMW X4/X6 or Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe/SUV. By the way, there could in the future be a traditional Mustang 2+2 coupe powered by electricity.
As for performance EVs, veteran journalists who’ve driven early Porsche Taycans, the $150,000 EV sports car, generally say it is the quickest, best-handling Porsche. Ever.
Originally, Ford planned to build a front-drive “compliance car.” Then-new CEO Jim Hackett pushed Ford to be bolder. Black lines were the original design. Red lines are the Mach-E: lower and longer hood, sleeker windshield, longer wheelbase. And plenty of room for people and cargo.
From Compliance Vehicle to Exciting EV
If this was a Ford Escape EV intro, The New York Times wouldn’t have put the story on Page 1 Monday.
Making this vehicle a Mustang is a stroke of genius by Ford management. (For those who disagree: that’s why we have the Disqus comments button below.) What became the Mustang Mach-E started out as, essentially, an electric Ford Escape, a “compliance vehicle” to keep Ford on the good side of environmentalists and government. Pretty exciting, huh? CEO Hackett early in his tenure reportedly decided an Escape EV wasn’t inspiring enough and pushed the company to shift direction well into the design process and create a sleeker battery-electric crossover/SUV that would carry the Mustang name. Focus, for its part, has three versions with the 2019 fourth generation: gasoline combustion engine, hybrid, and (for 2020) plug-in hybrid with up to 30 miles of battery-electric range.
To get the car to market in 2020, engineers and designers on the project (called Team Edison) did more computer modeling and skipped some clay models (time-consuming and costly) until later in the design phase. To emulate the volume knob that would be bonded to the bottom of the 15.5-inch center stack display, they used pieces of cardboard and a Keurig single-serve coffee cup for an early mockup. (Ergonomics warming: The actual volume knob is just as slippery to the touch. Too many automakers have given up on grippy rubber-covered knobs.) From early sketches to clay models to corporate approval to ordering the projection tools, the period was about a year.
Ford’s research turned up buyer confusion: Many believe electric vehicles need gasoline, caused by the uncertainty of what’s a battery electric vehicle versus plug-in hybrid versus hybrid. They doubted how well an EV would be in snow or cold weather. They suspected automakers’ hearts weren’t 100 percent behind EVs and believed some efforts were to comply with rules and statures. They feared being stranded, not knowing how to find charging stations, and waiting a long time to recharge the batteries. All that led Ford to conclude it needed to work with a loved nameplate, which meant Mustang or F-150, and Mustang is what was chosen.
Did it work? Buyers will decide in a year. Meanwhile, the Mach-E intro as a marketing event was a smashing success.
Ford opened its configuration/order site on Sunday. A $500 deposit, refundable, holds your place in line.
The cockpit of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E.
Trim Lines and Features
These are the five trim lines or model variants. Batteries are 75.7 kWh hour standard range (SR) or 98.8 kWh extended range (ER). All cars have a big electric motor in back; all-wheel-drive Mach-Es have a second, smaller motor up front. Power ranges from 255 to 459 hp, torque from 306 to 612 pound-feet. The range runs from 210 to 300 miles. Peak horsepower, torque, and acceleration all depend on whether you have rear- or all-wheel-drive, and even on the battery size. The bigger battery with 12, not 10, battery modules can deliver more peak power to the motors. Most trim lines will do 0-60 mph in the mid-5 second range with all-wheel-drive, about a second more with rear-drive only. The GT targets mid-3-second acceleration. Ford’s pricing notes potential tax savings, including the federal $7,500 tax credit, separately where Tesla’s large-type pricing already deducts it.
Mach-E Select, $44,995 (including $1,100 shipping), due early 2021, and rear or all-wheel-drive. DC fast charging is up to 115kW; the others charge at up 150kW.
Mach-E Premium, $51,700, late 2020, and rear or all-wheel drive.
Mach-E First Edition, $61,000, all-wheel-drive only, with a limited edition Mach-E delivered in late 2020.
California Rt. 1 Edition, $53,500, early 2021, the extended-range battery only, rear-drive only, and equipped for a range of up to 300 miles.
Mach-E GT, $61,600, spring 2021 (the last Mach-E to ship), the highest performance Mach-E, all-wheel-drive only, the extended battery only, and capable of 0-60 mph acceleration of around 3.5 seconds. Information on packages will be released later. This is the one Mach-E that has acceleration on par with the higher-end combustion-engine Mustangs.
Every Mach-E comes with FordPass Connect (onboard telematics), Phone as a Key (PaaK), 15.5-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch LCD instrument panel, and Sync 4.0 infotainment. The cars will also have three personas — “whisper,” “engage” and “unbridled” — that use fewer or more graphics and bright colors, depending on the driver’s mood or driving style.
Evasive steering assist adds steering effort to the driver’s inputs in situations where sensors detect a possible collision that can be avoided by turning the wheel.
Solid Driver Assists, Level 2 Self-Driving
The Mach-E offers significant safety features in three packages called Ford Co-Pilot which a) gives Ford a single distinguishing term for its advanced safety and driver-assist features and b) confuses the heck out of buyers because it all sounds alike. Here’s our attempt to make sense of it all. Basically, you get everything on the middle three trim lines, Premium, First Edition and Route 1, and you don’t get the surround camera/parking assist Co-Pilot package on the cheapest, Select, and sportiest/most costly, GT. The confusion aside, Ford provides an exceptional level of safety features standard.
Ford Co-Pilot 360 2.0 is the basics: pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection and braking, blind spot detection (Ford terminology: blind spot information system) with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, auto high beams, post-collision braking, reverse sensing (rear sonar), reverse brake assist, and rear-view camera (mandated by the feds).
Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 adds driver assists: Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control that is full-range (stop-and-go) lane centering (that is, beyond lane departure warning and beyond lane keep assist), speed sign recognition, and evasive steering assist.
Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology has Active Park Assist 2.0 that finds and parallel parks (also backs into perpendicular-parking spaces) and a 360-degree camera system.
As self-driving software gets better, Ford says it may be possible to do over-the-air updates that give the car additional degrees of autonomy. Where the various Co-Pilots combine to keep the car centered in the lane and a fixed distance behind the vehicle ahead, as long as the driver’s hands are lightly on the wheel, more autonomy might be possible. The Mach-E already integrates an eye tracker that tells if the driver is watching the road. With that hardware in place, the driver might no longer need to keep hands on.
Ford includes a simple charging cable for 120/240 volts, will sell you a 48-amp / 240 volt Level 2 charger (photo) that Amazon will install.
Charging Options, Help From Your Phone
Ford put a lot of effort into making charging as effortless as possible short of robotic arms that plug the charger in for you. The car comes with a Ford Mobile Charger for 120 and 240 volts that adds 3 or 22 miles of charge per hour, respectively. Ford cut a deal with Amazon to supply and install a 240-volt Connected Charge Station that delivers up to 32 miles of charge per hour and this is the one you want for an overnight refill of the near-empty 98.8-kWh, 376-cell extended range battery. Ford expects the majority of charging will be done from home
Additionally, a Ford app for your phone called Power My Trip shows how far you can go with the juice you have left, finds charging stations and charger types, and for long trips, maps out stopping points optimized so you have enough power to get to the next recommended station with power to spare. Then on the final leg home, it can recommend how much (how little) charge you need. Unless you have free charging at work, the cheapest charging is at home.
Ford also has set up what it calls the world’s largest charging network. Ford isn’t building stations that way that Tesla did. Rather it cut deals with many of the largest charging networks including Electrify America, to find available chargers and then set up a single billing process.
Bill Ford Jr., the company’s longtime champion of the environment: Electrification has come to the point that cars can be green and fun to drive.
Mach-E Puts Ford in a Good Place
55 years of Mustang. Now electrified.
Ford spent the last couple of years getting out of the sedan business, which may or may not be a mistake. Millennials may be turning to sedans because you do the opposite of what your SUV- or minivan-loving parents did. Now it’s looking good. The F-Series pickup is closing in on 1 million sales a year. Much of its SUV line has been recently refreshed. Sync no longer sucks. The Lincoln brand is finding its way with the focus on luxury rather than trying to outdo the Europeans on performance; while Lincoln is soaring, Cadillac is having challenges finding a formula that attracts buyers.
Support for change comes from both the CEO, Hackett, and the executive chairman, Bill Ford Jr., great-grandson of Henry, and the company’s longstanding supporter of cleaner cars and a cleaner environment. Speaking at a Detroit business event earlier this year, Bill Ford said, “When we first started talking about electrification, there was this thought that there had to be a trade-off. It was either going to be green and boring and no fun, or really exciting but burn a lot of fossil fuels. Electrification has come to the point that you can do both.”
The Mustang Mach-E may or may no win over long-time Mustang partisans. They’ll still have combustion-engine Mustang coupes for years to come. Now they’ll have the option of a far roomier Mustang that carries five people and a lot of luggage if they want another Mustang in the garage. Meanwhile, by linking electrification to one of its two most iconic models, Ford is changing its perception to being a company that wants to sell electric cars that are fun to drive, roomy, and high performance.

2021 BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition: Lights Out for Bimmer’s 523-HP SUV
BMW loves its special editions, and the company has rolled out some dark-themed schemes as of late, including the almost unseeable Vantablack X6 and the 8 Series Golden Thunder edition. But it seems the Munich-based automaker isn’t letting up, and it’s just taken the wraps off the BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition.
Essentially, the Dark Shadow Edition is an eight-cylinder X7 M50i with a lot of blacked-out bits to give it a stealthier vibe. The paint, however, isn’t black. Wait, what? No, really—this special X7 is coated in matte Frozen Arctic Grey Metallic. Even though the color is an option in BMW’s Individual catalog, the company says this is its first SUV to wear the hue. In photos, it at least appears very close to black.
The mirror caps, window surround, roof rails, and massive grille are all (actually) blacked out and help set off the shadowy gray paint. The family hauler sits on 22-inch wheels painted Jett Black that help complete the sinister look.
Inside, the X7 gets special two-tone, Night Blue and Black seats and a Night Blue Alcantara headliner, while the dashboard and parts of the doors have additional splashes of Night Blue to liven things up a bit. The rest of the interior is mostly black, with the glossy piano-black plastic center-console trim bearing the words “Edition Dark Shadow.”
Being an appearance package, the Dark Shadow X7 brings no mechanical modifications. That means the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 still makes an entirely enjoyable 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque and the M Sport suspension remains unchanged. BMW says about 75 Dark Shadow models will make their way to the U.S., and interested parties can preorder one at this link along with placing a $1,000 refundable deposit. The Dark Shadow Edition X7 itself will cost $120,490 when those orders are fulfilled.
