#2020 wnba mock draft

Note
Nivi baby, do you have a final mock draft before tomorrow? I can't believe this class is about to become WNBA rookies. Where did the time go with my little 2020 freshmen? 🥺
No because literally like trying to imagine next season without Nika and Aaliyah is hard enough but then trying to imagine without Cam or Angel or Rickea or Kamilla etc.? I'm so excited for them but I'm really gonna miss my college girlies. 🥺
Anyways this is my draft based mainly on who I would take. I don't watch a lot of international basketball and I know there's two prospects who will probably be taken first round but since I don't know them, they're not making this list.
Caitlin Clark (the Fever could do the funniest thing and because it's the Fever and they're known for dumb shit there's always a chance they could but yeah if it's not CC, something has gone very wrong behind the scenes)
Cam Brink (in my opinion, the most complete player in the class and I don't know why anyone would pass her up)
Rickea Jackson (offensive and defense both go insane and the Sky need a player like her while they're rebuilding)
Aaliyah Edwards (now do I expect the WNBA to fuck up and let her slip lower? Yes. But should she? Absolutely not.)
Kamilla Cardoso (you don't pass up a true center like Kamilla and pretty much every team needs her height)
Jacy Sheldon (honestly probably one of the most complete guards in the draft in terms of offense and defense and the Mystics need a good guard)
Angel Reese (did y'all see my girl is developing a three-point shot? this was the Lynx's pick and they traded it which is unfortunate but Kea and Angel on the Sky should be fun too)
Alissa Pili (#APHive hello!! AP playing with Phee and Dorka? The way I need this beyond anything and I think it'll be a good place for her to fully transition into being a 3 which she should be in the W)
Charisma Osbourne (just a great player, great guard and the league needs pgs always and I like her game)
Dyaisha Fair (I think the Sun would be a great landing spot for my girl. Their backcourt is good but I think could use someone who can basically score at will like Dyaisha)
Nika Muhl (I need this more than I need air like y'all don't understand. And NY needs a good defensive gaurd so bad and Nika off the bench would be so perfect for them)
Liz Kitley (yes I know she's injured but I do think Liz makes it into the first round anyways the same way Soares did last year. In a different draft class, despite injury she'd have gone higher but I think the Dream would like to keep the rights to her)
#ask#wnba draft#gonna come back and look at the predictions after tomorrow and i already know some of them are gonna be way off

2020 WNBA Mock Draft 1.0
This draft is difficult to predict because so many picks have been traded since free agency started, and there are many top caliber juniors who are eligible to declare early. The only junior to do so thus far has been Satou Sabally. I will only include players who are seniors or have announced they will declare early.
1. New York Liberty- Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon)
This is no brainer. She is the first player in NCAA history to have 2k points, 1k assists and 1k rebounds. She will not only bring talent to New York, but much needed hype and publicity. With their move to Brooklyn, this is perfect timing for the Liberty. She will rejuvenate the organization and fan base after 2 disappointing seasons.
2. Dallas Wings- Satou Sabally (Oregon)
Early mock drafts had Lauren Cox going to her home town Wings, but with Sabally declaring early that changes things. Sabally has all the tools to be an MVP in the WNBA. She is a versatile big who can play as a guard. Sue Bird and Skylar Diggins- Smith have said Sabally is the most pro ready player in college right now. Even though Ionescu is no doubt going to be the number 1 pick, it seems like Sabally has the most potential and the highest ceiling of anyone in this draft class.
3. Indiana Fever- Lauren Cox (Baylor)
Cox is an elite shot blocker. If Indiana has her coming off the bench, they will have some of the best rim protection in the league. If she plays with McCowan on the floor she also has the ability to stretch the floor and hit from the 3. She is also a great passer from the post. There isn’t much she can’t do. Lauren Cox is also a Type 1 Diabetic, and will be the first diabetic in the WNBA. As a type 1 diabetic myself this is great for me to see. I wish I had a female diabetic athlete to look up to when I was younger.
4. Atlanta Dream- Kiah Gillespie (Florida St.)
This is where the draft gets especially tricky. Atlanta has made a lot of moves this off season. They traded for Kalani Brown, and Courtney Williams. They also signed free agents Glory Johnson and Shekinna Stricklen. They have overhauled their roster without having to give away too much. Gillespie has been one of the biggest draft jumpers this season. She can do a bit of everything, and can be a solid back up to Stricklen.
5. Dallas Wings- Ruthy Hebard (Oregon)
The Wings have 4 top 10 picks, and about a million players set to be at their training camp already. They’ve made all sorts of moves, but I’m not sure what their ultimate goal is. I’m going with the best available pick here. Depending on who else declares this pick can change.
6. Minnesota Lynx- Crystal Dangerfield (Connecticut)
Minnesota has been the most quiet this off season. Augustus is off to Los Angeles, Odyssey Sims is pregnant and most likely to miss all of the 2020 season, and Danielle Robinson signed with the Aces. The Lynx are in desperate need of a guard. Her assist numbers are down this year, but Dangerfield has the ability to be an elite passer. She is also a sharp shooter who isn’t afraid to launch from way downtown. She was also teammates with Napheesa Collier for 3 years, so they already have chemistry.
7. Dallas Wings- Tyasha Harris (South Carolina)
With already picking 2 bigs, it seems logical the Wings would go with a guard here. She is a consistent scorer who is an above average defender. She is the senior point guard to a young South Carolina team. She is a big reason they are currently number 1 in the country. If the Wings get into injury trouble this season, Harris is a player who won’t have a problem stepping up.
8. Chicago Sky- Mikayla Pivec (Oregon St.)
Pivec is a versatile guard who plays bigger than her height. Very similar to Sky Guard/Forward Gabby Williams. She is currently shooting 51% from the floor, and grabs rebounds like a power forward/center. She is also a great passer. The Sky don’t have any glaring holes to fill, so a versatile player like Pivec is a great player to have on the bench for whatever problems may arise.
9. Dallas Wings- Kaila Charles (Maryland)
Here we are again with a pick for the Wings. Charles and Maryland have had a tumultuous season. But they are making a late season surge. She is currently shooting 50% from the field and is an incredible rebounder for a guard (very similar to Pivec). She is a great defender who can get you a steal or a rebound when it’s crunch time.
10. Phoenix Mercury- Beatrice Mompremier (Miami)
Mompremier has been dealing with a foot injury for most of this season, so she is a bit of a wildcard. Phoenix lost Bonner to Connecticut, and Sacho lyttle and Camille Little to retirement. They will be looking to replace the height and length they’ve lost. Mompremier could potentially be a big steal for Phoenix and 10th.
11. Seattle Storm- Te’a Cooper (Baylor)
Cooper has been phenomenal for Baylor this season. She is a floor general who is also capable of being a scorer when her team needs it. Seattle doesn’t have any holes to fill in their roster, so this pick looks to be a bench warmer no matter who they pick. With Sue Bird having who knows how many seasons left, having a young point guard is never a bad idea for the Storm.
12. Washinton Mystics- Mikiah Herbert- Harrigan (South Carolina)
GM and Head Coach Mike Thibault likes to draft outside of the box. That’s why I’m going with Herbert Harrigan. She is an incredible shot blocker who is a consistent scorer and rebounder. She plays bigger than her size and hustles on both ends of the floor. This is the type of player Thibault likes to have on his team.

Here are our immediate reactions for the first 12 picks in the draft.
We’ve arrived at the 2020 WNBA Draft, what will hopefully go down as the first and only virtual draft in the league’s history. Sabrina Ionescu is projected to go first overall to the New York Liberty, but beyond that, chaos reigns on the mock drafts.
The Liberty are going all-in on their youth movement, having traded Tina Charles earlier this week to get two extra first-round picks in today’s draft. The full order is below — New York and Dallas each have three first-rounders, and Indiana, Atlanta, Minnesota, Chicago, Phoenix, and Seattle each have one.
Because draftees aren’t allowed to be in person to shake the commissioner’s hand, the WNBA sent personalized swag boxes to the players instead. Ionescu confirmed to the Wall Street Journal earlier this week that she and the top picks also received a special tech package to make sure that they can broadcast from their homes upon being selected.
1. New York Liberty — Sabrina Ionescu, G, Oregon
Grade: A
Ionescu was no. 1 on everyone’s board; she would have been the top overall pick to Las Vegas last year had she declared early out of Oregon. She is the biggest star of this draft — her new head coach Walt Hopkins called her a “franchise player” — and the Liberty needed a player like her to market around as they move into the Barclays Center full-time.
New York also needed what Ionescu brings to the court as they supercharge their rebuild. The Liberty haven’t made the playoffs since 2016 and just traded away a franchise icon in Tina Charles. Ionescu can instantly come in to take control of the offense, as the team needs a point guard in the very worst way. Her knack for finding others and ability to take care of the ball are both traits that weren’t on New York’s roster last year.
2. Dallas Wings — Satou Sabally, F, Oregon
Grade: A
In another year, Satou Sabally would be a no-brainer candidate for a no. 1 pick. She is an athletic wing who can get her own shot and get to the line while also draining it from deep. Sabally averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds while shooting 38 percent from 3-point range this season. Statistically, her metrics paint her as arguably a more impactful player than Ionescu this year.
Dallas has one future franchise cornerstone in Arike Ogunbowale, and Sabally will pair her marvelously. She doesn’t need to have the ball to dominate, and she can alleviate the pressure Ogunbowale faced from opposing defenses by providing a secondary scoring threat.
3. Indiana Fever
4. Atlanta Dream
5. Dallas Wings
6. Minnesota Lynx
7. Dallas Wings
8. Chicago Sky
9. New York Liberty
10. Phoenix Mercury
11. Seattle Storm
12. New York Liberty

2020 WNBA Mock Draft 2.0

Dallas has acquired players who are versatile and can run the floor. Sabally is all of this and more.
4. Atlanta Dream- Chennedy Carter (Texas A&M)
This pick can go one of two ways: they draft for talent or for need. With all the off-season moves they made it doesn’t seem like they have many needs. One hole I see is bench scoring. Carter is perfect for off the bench scoring. She can create her own shot and seems to be able to score at will. Atlanta as a team struggled offensively last year, so having depth is going to be important if their starting five starts to struggle scoring.
5. Dallas Wings- Tyasha Harris (South Carolina)
Originally I had Harris going to Dallas as the 7th pick, but given her being named to the First All- American team, I think her stock has risen. She is a consistent scorer who is an above average defender. Head coach Brian Agler is someone who values defense. Harris was a big reason the Gamecocks were the number one team in the country.
She was also teammates with Napheesa Collier for three years, so they already have chemistry. If Tyasha Harris is still available by this pick, then she could very well be taken by Minnesota instead.
7. Dallas Wings- Bella Alarie (Princeton)
Alarie wasn’t in my first mock draft, so what changed? I recently listen to this interview with the Wings GM, and he said Dallas values versatile players, and they prioritize defense. Alarie can be compared to Elena Delle Donne and Candace Parker. She also has the most blocks in Princeton program history. I think Alarie will be somebody who sneaks under the radar. It’s also very possible this pick gets traded before draft night, so who knows if Dallas will even have this pick. But Alarie definitely has the ability to be a sleeper pick and be successful in this league.
This is somewhere Kiah Gillespie could also end up.

She is currently shooting 50% from the field and is an incredible rebounder for a guard (very similar to Pivec). She is a great defender who can get you a steal or a rebound when it’s crunch time.
10. Phoenix Mercury- Megan Walker (Connecticut)
I was very surprised to see Walker is declaring early. I think she is someone who could have benefited from her senior year. I believe she would have been a top three pick in the 2021 draft. I think she will be a perfect fit in Phoenix. I think it’s time Phoenix starts to think about life after Diana Taurasi. Walker would be a great protege to Taurasi. She can score with ease, and is a terrific spot up shooter. She could very easily be drafted earlier, or could even slip to the second round. That is how volatile and wide open this draft is.
11. Seattle Storm- Te’a Cooper (Baylor)
Cooper was phenomenal for Baylor this season. She is a floor general who is also capable of being a scorer when her team needs it. Seattle doesn’t have any holes to fill in their roster, so this pick looks to be a bench warmer no matter who they pick. The Sky don’t have any glaring holes to fill, so a versatile player like Pivec is a great player to have on the bench for whatever problems may arise. This is somewhere Kiah Gillespie could also end up.
Chicago could also draft the best available player, who could easily be Megan Walker. No matter who they draft, they won’t be more than a bench warmer.
9. New York Liberty- Ruthy Hebard (Oregon)
This is where things start to change. With Tina Charles gone, they will most likely go for a forward here. With Ionescu all but a guarantee at the number one pick, they could go for Ruthy Hebard here. They already have incredible chemistry and the Liberty could look to continue that. If a franchise is rebuilding, having guaranteed chemistry is priceless. They could also go for Mompremier who is more versatile.
I’m going to take a chance and say New York is going to go with Hebard. If they have someone else in mind, they could risk picking her up with the 12th pick if they think she will still be available.
10. Phoenix Mercury- Megan Walker (Connecticut)
I was very surprised to see Walker is declaring early. I think she is someone who could have benefited from her senior year. I believe she would have been a top three pick in the 2021 draft. With Sue Bird having who knows how many seasons left, having a young point guard is never a bad idea for the Storm.
12. New York Liberty- Kaila Charles (Maryland)
New York received Tayler Hill and Shatori Walker- Kimbrough in the Tina Charles trade. They are both guards, and if they draft Ionescu, I can’t imagine they would pick another guard here. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hill doesn’t make the final roster. She has a big contract for someone who has barely played these past two seasons.
Therefore I think New York will go for someone who can play the 2 and 3. This comes down to Kaila Charles and Kiah Gillespie. One or both could still be available at this point. But if Charles is available I think they should go with her. She is a great defender and shot 50% from the field this season. This could ultimately go both ways.
