One of the best things about electric cars in 2023 is that we are now seeing 1st generation models from the “early years” being improved, revised and facelifted. For the early-adopters in the UK’s EV market, we are grateful for those consumers and businesses for having the foresight and courage to invest into all-electric technology in 2018 / 2019 / 2020, when little was known on how good this form of transport would be (and when public charging infrastructure was still in its early inception). And VW’s electric Golf replacement, the ID.3, was first shown to the world in 2016 before being pushed into production in 2019 with deliveries taking place around 2020 around Europe (including the UK). As one would expect, the ID3 was fairly popular, amassing some 11,032 registrations in 2021 (it was the 3rd best-selling EV in the UK) followed by becoming the 4th best-selling UK EV with 9,178 registrations in 2022! (see SMMT for more details - https://media.smmt.co.uk/). Launching with a Pure battery (45 kWh), Pro battery (58 kWh) and Pro S configuration (77 kWh), VW’s all-electric hatchback filled a necessary hole in the UK’s automotive market, which was historically dominated by SUVs and luxury / prestige options. Winning awards, like the Which? Best Buy of 2023 (https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/new-and-used-cars/volkswagen-id-3-2020), does prove that this is very much the zero-emission Golf equivalent.
But the “future of driving” is not a completed model and the German group have now confirmed a series of external, integral and technological improvements to this popular EV (see VW - https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/electric-and-hybrid/electric-cars/the-new-id3.html). As the “evolution of electric mobility” continues, the brand have confirmed some truly existing updates including:
Exterior - new colours such as Dark Olivine Green, sharper profile at the front together with new tail light clusters and dynamic turn signals plus IQ.Light LED matrix headlights set to be offered. New alloy options including the 19” Wellington and 20” Sanya alloys, a new Exterior Package will allow drivers to add LED matrix headlights with automatic lighting control, LED tail lights, illuminated strip between headlights and tinted rear windows. An Exterior Packages PLUS includes a panoramic roof and sun blind;
Interior - increased options on the dash and door trim, together with higher quality finish. Ability to upgrade to the optional electric seats with massage function and high-quality fabric. New panoramic glass roof with “heavenly views” and sunblind; and
Technology and safety - 8-colour ambient lighting, Travel Assist with adaptive lane guidance and predictive cruise control, Emergency Assist, Area View with 4 cameras, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and Park Assist Plus can all be added to your new ID3.
Not unlike many other brands, the ID.3 will be utilising over-the-air updates for continual improvements coupled with the We Connect ID app for synergising your vehicle to your mobile device. Many EV customers enjoy the facility to start and stop charging, or warm their vehicle, from the comfort of the app.

How The Number Of Used Cars For Sale Has Raisen Over The Last 3 Years
As we commemorate Transport Month, we have to reflect on South African vehicle listings, particularly the used car market, a booming sector in the automotive space. For reference, we're looking at used vehicle listings over the past three years and comparing the first half of the year (H1) of 2020 to H1 of 2023. According to AutoTrader, data shows that 573 083 used cars were listed for sale in H1 of 2020 by 105 different brands, a staggering amount.
When comparing this with data from H1 of 2023, we see a 10% increase in used car listings, bringing the total used vehicles available for sale on the platform to 652 198 from 116 different vehicle brands. These figures show an increased number of used cars in the market and an expansion of vehicle manufacturers trading in South Africa.
Over the three years, 18 new brands have entered the market, and according to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, "the increase of brands trading in South Africa is partially due to stronger ties with China. We've seen brands like Chery make a triumphant return, as well as other Chinese brands like Proton expanding production in the South African automotive space."

During this period, three brands saw the most significant growth in cars listed for sale, one of them being Chery, with a 997% increase in listings on the used car market. Proton is not far behind with an 875% spike.British brand Lotus saw a 620% increase, while luxurious German firm Mercedes-Maybach increased by 369%, followed by Haval with a 176% bump.
Looking at some more historically popular brands, in 2020, Volkswagen had the most used car listings on AutoTrader, accounting for 13.8% of total listings. Toyota followed closely (12.2%), with Ford (10.92%) in third place.
The same players continue to dominate in 2023 with a slight reshuffle of order. Toyota listings now take up the largest slice of the pie at 15.3%, switching positions with VW taking second place at 12.98%. Ford's listings have remained consistent over the three years at 10.60%.
There has been an increase in rare imports on the platform as well; however, these niche cars account for a small portion of the overall pie.

State of NC Fast Charging: Winter 2020
It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to pen a State of Charging report. So what’s changed since the Winter 2019 report?
Greenlots
I haven’t spoken much on this subject since the last report. I emailed Brightfield Transportation Solutions, the station owner of all those Greenlots machines, back in Feb. Their email was basically a rehashing of the message they’d been posting to Plugshare entries for these machines.
They told me QwickCharge out of Atlanta bought the assets. I called QwickCharge up in March, after my reply to this email asking about the status of the acquisition went unanswered by Brightfield. I got the outgoing CEO on the phone, he actually answered it himself! He was stepping down from the role after the sale was finalized (I was told due to a disagreement with the board), but that he wouldn’t have anything to do with the project once the sale was completed. At that time they were still “a few weeks” away from finalizing the deal. He then told me how all these Signets are one-off boxes that were made cheaply for the Nissan Leaf EV charging network rollout. They didn’t use the same controllers as other machines, and they didn’t have upgradable firmware nor did Signet have a new 4G modem to replace the 3G modem in the units. The pending 3G network shutdown is why all the machines went offline or into free vend mode. I was also told that many muncipalities - who paid the bill for the machines and thus dealt with the “unfair demand charges from Duke,” requested the machines be throttled down to 20kW to avoid the demand charges. This is why some machines - like Leland - were operating so slowly towards the end of their life.
I called back in May or June, and spoke to the new CEO (who also answered the phone). He told me that they are planning to add a credit card reader to the machines to facilitate payments, and that the machines as they are will still be in use. I specifically inquired about Leland and Calabash locations on the coast, and was told that when they have a plan in place those would be the first machines to come back online. There is no ETA for when that will happen.
ChargePoint
ChargePoint had a growth spurt in 2019 with all the Harley-Davidson dealers getting chargers to support the LiveWire. In 2020, the North Carolina Electric Member Cooperative’s Electric Vehicle Network has driven most of their growth, and will continue to do so throughout 2021 under the VW Diesel Emission Mitigation funding plan. EVgo has let us down yet again. EVgo was awarded 4 projects to be funded by the VW grant, those locations allegedly are all at Lowe’s Food stores in Raleigh (Brier Creek), Greensboro (Guildford College Rd), Kernersville, and Harrisburg. Notable, all locations will have two dispensers and only Greensboro is slated to be a 50kW location… all others claim to be 200kW. This begs the question, is that 200kW per machine or is it power-shared?

Electrify America has not failed to impress me, but they have had their growing pains… like turning off the I-95 corridor over Labor Day. Now, it should be noted that they replaced all the buggy Efaced hardware with ABB or Signet machines. This is good, but, there’s issues with Signet machines and Energica Motorcycles as well as the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8. So there is still work to be done, a fix for this issue is supposed to be deployed by the end of Jan (so I’m told).
Electrify America is the largest operator by a wide margin now: 54 dispensers across 11 sites, soon to be 58 dispensers at 12 sites. They’re still the only company with a redundant design - meaning more than one dispenser and more than one cable per machine. The open locations:

Miraculous Ladybug Car Headcanons
You didn't ask for it, I kinda didn't want to write it, but it's been spooking around in my head for so long now that I just had to get it out: Overly justified head canons for what car which Miraculous Ladybug main character would drive once they're adults (say early twenties). Of course it's still based on today (January 2020), because canonically in ML, time makes no sense and you shouldn't worry about it.
First off: As people living in a big European city with good public transport, there's a good argument to be made that they wouldn't drive (or at least own their own) cars at all, especially for Marinette, who would have to search ages for a parking space. I'm just going to ignore that here.
Adrien
The car: Jaguar I-Pace, black, possibly with some green on the wheels or the mirrors.
Why: It's a black cat! A big, driving pun! How could he resist? More specifically, I think Chat Noir has based at least some of his ideas of what it means to be a cool, suave super-hero on certain British spy movies, for better or worse, and it would make sense that his ideas of cool cars might be influenced by them as well. That would imply Aston Martin, but then again, cat, so Jaguar it is.
Here you might go for something actually cool, like the F-Type, and I could even imagine Adrien doing that… until the first time he, Marinette, Alya and Nino want to travel somewhere and he realises they won't all fit. Just imagine his face when he realises that he has to leave some of his friends behind. I'm fairly certain he'd insist that they all take the bus together instead, and he'd definitely trade in his car the very next day.
There would be other alternatives even within the Jaguar brand. I'm partial to the E-Pace, which tries to look cool but just ends up looking adorable, which makes it basically a Plagg or Chat Noir on wheels. But in the current climate conscious times, I guess it would make more sense for him as a rich guy to go the electric route. Plus, there's much more trunk space, which is very useful whenever he helps Nino move his DJ-ing equipment, or whenever he helps Marinette move fabric, clothes, mannequins, sewing machines, furniture, or all of those together in an indeterminate ball. And yes, he is genuinely happy and ready to drop everything and help Marinette move stuff whenever she asks, just to see her adorable blush and her beautiful smile. She's a really good friend, you know.
Rejected alternatives:
Any german car. Not many people know it (even though it seems blindingly obvious), but as someone who worked in the german car industry for years, I can confirm: German cars have no soul. They're good for the Gabriels and Chloes of the world, maybe, but they're all just so boring. I read at least one aged-up no powers AU story where Adrien had a quirky unusual Subaru Station Wagon (which I really like as a car idea for him), but then trades it for a generic Audi, and that somehow represents him growing up. Sorry, the rest of the story is great, but this? Nope. If growing up means driving Audis, then I never want to be old.
Lexus, Infinity or whatever: Why would you want to buy a japanese car trying to be a soulless german car? Could just as well go with the soulless original, or better yet, buy something fun to begin with.
Some Peugeot. It would fit because of cat pun and also french, but I think they're just not that exciting.
Any Tesla. I had a boss once who drove a Tesla. Spent every lunch break gushing over his car. Every single one. No offence to him, he was a perfectly nice person, but damn, that was annoying. So I have a strict "No Tesla Talk" rule nowadays.
Marinette
The car: Renault Twingo, first generation, pink or red.
Why: It's small, french, and thoroughly charming, much like Marinette herself. It's also going to be in her (or her parents') price range. Plus, the small size makes it easy to park, crucial when you don't have a giant estate like some people. And if she needs to move something really big, Adrien has made it very clear that she can always count on him. (She's a bit self-conscious about asking him all the time, but he never minds, and it is an opportunity for her to get him alone and have him smile at her) There's lots of other small french cars you could go with, but I'd argue that the first-generation Twingo hits the sweet spot between being recent enough and interesting enough.
Rejected alternatives:
The same car, but in red: I'm thinking that's too on the nose. But maybe if we assume that the car was once red, but then slowly bleached out to pink over time?
VW Beetle (old): Yes, I get it, but I already gave Adrien a car based on a pun, two is excessive. Plus, I personally think that it's just not that charming. On a more practical level, this is nowadays a historic car for enthusiasts.
VW Beetle (any of the two newer generations): Less historic, but also less charming, and getting to the thing where german cars have no souls that I mentioned above.
Renault Twizzy: I did consider giving her an electric option as well, but I don't really like any of them. The Renault Zoe would be obvious but boring. The Twizzy is quirky, but also rather pointless, at least for someone who already lives in a city instead of having to commute into it. If we're going that route, then I think the electric Vespa would be a better choice. We already know she's comfortable on motorcycles.
Actually, there are a lot of reasons why a Vespa or any type of scooter would be a better choice for her than a car. There are the obvious parts of being cheaper and using less parking space, but also consider the increased flexibility in chase scenes. Plus, it gives us lots more cute scenes where Adrien has to (or in his opinion, gets to) drive her to and from the discount yarn store, as well as scenes where she has to deal with him clinging on really tight to her on her scooter. But that's not the premise of this post, I guess.
Driving
Yes, Marinette is a bit air-headed and uncoordinated, but I really don't want to do old sexist boomer tropes. So let us instead focus on her miraculous ability to recover from whatever flailing she's gotten herself into. This is not always entirely consistent in canon, but it's definitely there. With the added benefit of a bit of growing up, we can assume that Marinette will get into all sorts of close calls that will scare her friends a bit, but that her car will remain entirely spotless (or as close to spotless as is possible in Paris).
Adrien, on the other hand, is chill, level-headed, focused, and rarely turns his music up loud, resulting in entirely uneventful drives.
Of course, that is in normal situations. In an emergency (such as needing to return to Paris ASAP because of a new Akuma), both will drive scarily fast but entirely accident-free. And it doesn't matter that Adrien has an order of magnitude more horsepower than Marinette: She will arrive there first. (That's if she is in her own car. If they had to trade cars for some reason, then she will show in detail exactly how much quicker the more expensive car can be.)
In costume, they're obviously not going to use their cars normally. But there will be situations of Ladybug in Adrien's car, or Chat in Marinette's car (weird, why does he know the specific way required to wiggle the old, busted door handle? Eh, best not to think about it). There's also a general understanding that they can always use each other's cars as cover in a fight. That, or as projectiles, or as power sources, or as a general source of spare metal and parts for more convoluted "Lucky Charm" plans. Even if they have doubts about whether the Miraculous Cure works. After all, neither of them may know that Adrien/Marinette is right next to them, but they do know for a fact that they won't mind if it's for a good cause.
The cars are also very useful as quick places to transform. You might say that they have windows, and that others might realise that something is up when one person enters the car and then a suspiciously similar looking person in other clothes leaves it. But remember the canonical rules: As long as there exists at least one possible view point in the vicinity, and one object or landscape feature of any size, so that a hypothetical observer at that viewpoint would consider Adrien or Marinette to be behind that feature, they're safe. Or if all observers who have been shown on screen are currently looking somewhere else.
(Personally, I'm fairly certain that there must be characters who know perfectly well that Marinette is Ladybug, and just never realised that it was supposed to be a secret.)

Biden Signs Executive Order Targeting 50% EVs by 2030
President Joe Biden signed an executive order Thursday afternoon aimed at beginning the phaseout of cars and trucks running on gas and diesel, with battery-electric vehicles now expected to make up at least 50% of new model sales by 2030.

The president also confirmed that the administration is reversing a “shortsighted” move by his predecessor that saw a sharp rollback in federal fuel economy standards. Both moves won widespread praise — and promises from key automakers they will live up to the targets the Biden White House has set. The future, said Biden, speaking from the White House lawn, “is electric, and there’s no turning back. The question is whether we’ll lead,” he said, warning that, “Right now, China is leading the race.”
Currently, that Asian powerhouse has 93 plants building the sort of batteries needed to power battery-based vehicles, compared to just four in the United States, according to a study by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. But Thursday’s executive order received far more positive reviews from most of the auto industry, starting with the Detroit Big Three, whose senior executives were on hand for the signing.

Forty years ago, typewriters dominated the (written) world, 10 years later they no longer existed. It was just too inefficient and tedious to type everything again if you made a small mistake. My mother, who was a gifted secretary, bought such a machine with great joy in 1988—and then realized in 1990 that it was practically worthless. There is a feeling that the car industry is in a similar situation: perfecting an old model, also like Kodak kept on perfecting the film reels, not realizing that something completely different—digital photography—has been emerging. Cars in post-war Europe contributed even more to the economic boom than typewriters. Thanks to VW, BMW, Daimler-Benz, Peugeot, Renault, Fiat, and American and Japanese producers, mobility became possible and affordable. Despite the incredible success of the automobile, not only in Germany, the conventional car is one of the greatest wastes of all time: Although they are built to drive, cars just stand around 95 percent of the time—in cities even on average 97 percent. During COVID-19, traffic has declined by around 80 percent in most cities in Europe, which means that a typical car was only in use 1 percent of the time. Cars should drive—not stand—and it makes no sense to use one of the most valuable investments of every household so little. In addition to this gigantic waste of raw materials, there is also the waste of valuable space, especially in the cities. But even if the cars are moving, great damage can occur. The worst are the deaths and injuries caused by road traffic. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, 1.3 million people died in road traffic worldwide in 2019. It would be like simply erasing a city the size of Munich every year. Globally, more people are killed in road traffic than by AIDS (around 1 million), Malaria (670,000), and more than 10 times as much as by wars and attacks (125,000). Driverless cars will dramatically minimize the number of deaths and injuries, conserve resources, and save a great deal of time for each individual. However, the upheaval in the automotive industry will not be fueled technologically but economically. When driverless cars (and trucks) become commonplace, transportation will be so cheap and convenient that owning your own car is no longer necessary nor profitable. There will also be more demand because people who cannot afford to buy a car or are not able to drive (children and elderly people) can be transported conveniently and cheaply. The additional (latent) demand will further reduce prices. We saw a similar effect in the telecoms sector when new business models, especially prepaid options, increased the number of users and created economies of scale, so that prices declined, and poorer people could also afford a cell phone. Here is an example of an average car owner who uses his vehicle 36 hours a month, i.e., 9 hours a week.
A car costs at least 600 euros per month (including acquisition costs/depreciation, fuel, parking fees, insurance, repairs, tolls and motorway fees, and the occasional parking ticket).
The opportunity costs of driving a car are at least 360 euros if you only assume minimum wage for each hour driven. If you use your car much less, then the case for owning your own car is even weaker.
The total costs amount to almost 1,000 euros per month. There are now car-sharing, car-hailing, and soon driverless options that are starting to alter the economics of owning a car.
A typical Uber trip costs around 10 euros for 10 kilometers, around half of which goes to the driver. If the driver falls away, then 10 kilometers costs about 5 euros. This means that you can drive over 2,000 kilometers a month in a driverless taxi for the same cost as owning a conventional car (see Figure 1).

In order to use the time productively, more and more people will appreciate that they can gain a lot of time if a robot drives them. Three additional shifts will increase demand for new forms of mobility:
The COVID-19 pandemic will further accelerate the mobility revolution. As more people embark on home-based work, they will commute less; when they move, alternative means of transport will become more attractive.
Concerns for climate change. The millennial generation is increasingly driven by concerns for climate change and immaterial values. As they form families they will also increasingly benefit from new forms of urban living, especially the conversion of parking spaces into parks and green spaces.
The rising silver economy. The number of seniors will rise rapidly, especially wealthy seniors. Seniors want to remain mobile, and driverless mobility will make their lives much easier.
Some readers will surely ask what happens to all those drivers who enjoy driving and who cannot imagine a life without a steering wheel? There are historical forerunners here too. Just 120 years ago, horses dominated daily locomotion. Few could imagine mobility without horses. Today, you can rent horses for personal fun and ride around.
