Mitsubishi RVR: the forgotten jewel

In another lifetime I had a 1972 Dodge Colt station wagon. It was my first car with real heat (having had several Beetles before that) and it served my well, very well. Monday to Friday it took me to work and back, when spring came around you’d find me at the local drag strip on Friday nights going up against…and winning, anything they put in the other lane. On weekends I’d throw on a roof rack, fill up the back with building materials and head up into the hills to attack my new cottage project.
Why am I rambling on about a Colt wagon in a Mitsubishi RVR review? Simple, that Colt had a Mitsubishi engine and was the American version of the Mitsubishi Gallant. It was also  was my first real exposure to Japanese engines, and it was bulletproof.

One thing I’ve always said about Mitsubishi products, “Great engines but loud cars as they lack noise insulation.” Well I’m pleased to say that after several years of absence behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi product, their entry-level SUV, the RVR proved me wrong.

Over 1.3 million RVRs have been sold in 90 countries over the years, yet RVR moniker doesn’t exactly come to mind on our shores when thinking about subcompact/compact SUVs and crossovers. That’s really too bad, because the little Mitsubishi has a lot going for it, including one of the best warranties in the industry, and with nine years under its belt, it has a proven reliability history, and is affordable!
Yes it’s got some noteworthy competitors in the segment; Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Nissan Qashqai, Ford EcoSport, Chevrolet Trax and the Jeep Renegade but the RVR betters more than one. Mitsubishi has upped the anti with this year’s model refresh.

The 2020 RVR gets a clean facelift from the front door pillars forward, including LED lighting and the new corporate grille. Chrome shark gills on the front fenders now serve as the basis for the side crease line while the rear has been reworked to give the RVR a more robust look. Likewise, the interior has been upgraded with new materials and colours, and of course the must have of must haves, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility via the standard 8-inch touchscreen.
Yes it still rides on the same RVR platform and uses the same engines that have been around since 2011, and yes the nine-year old chassis still offers a ride and handling that outshines most of the others in the niche market. Proof that Mits engineers were ahead of the game all along and holding true to the old adage of  “why fix it if it ain’t broke”, and isn’t that a testament to a well thought out design, if it’s still clean and fresh nine years later.
Head office has shuffled their trim levels to improve its value proposition. Two front wheel drive models serve as entry points with the base ES starting at $22,998 and base all-wheel drive version (ES AWC) coming in at  $25,298. Sadly the extinction of the manual transmission (another Mits stronghold) continues. I couldn’t have won all those races with a CVT!
Two naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines are offered, a 2.0L and a 2.4L. The first offers 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, while the bigger one, only available on the SE AWC trim ($27,997) or higher, pumps out 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft.

My top tier GT AWC (priced at a hair under $34,000), came with that bigger engine and the lockable 4WD system – a rarity not only in this size segment but with larger sport utes as well. Regular readers will recall that it’s one of the features I’m looking for in our replacement of the family X-Trail which too, has a locking system. Simply put you can switch from a conventional front-bias reactive system where the vehicle is front-wheel-drive, engaging the rear wheels when slip is detected, which ultimately improves gas pump stops. At the push of a button, AWC locks all four wheels for preventive all-wheel-drive.
The RVR’s cabin is roomier than most other subcompacts, with a panoramic roof adding to the airiness. Visibility is very good all around.

Whether we’re talking steering wheel mounted controls or dash controls they’re large, simple, straightforward and easy to use. Great ergonomics make it shine in a world where everything has been overblown and over thought, and of course you’re not paying for a rolling gadget wagon.

I did get pampered with the GT’s 710-watt Rockford Fosgate punch audio system with 9 speakers and the trunk mounted subwoofer. There’s 20 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in position and just under 50 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded.

On the road the 2.4 L moved the crossover about nimbly delivering smooth and linear power. Acceleration is decent as long as you don’t mind the CVT’s whine –turn up the 710 watts. The steering wheel mounted paddle shifters added to the fun factor. The chassis offers just enough stiffness to allow for some sporty antics and sooft enough to cushion washboard roads and city potholes. In fact it’s close to having one of the best rides in the category.

I averaged 9.0 L/100 km during my week-long ride with mostly highway driving. Hampered no doubt by winter warm ups and plowing through the powder.
If someone were to describe a vehicle to you as being affordable, built to last and fuel-efficient, equipped with all-wheel-drive and backed by an industry-best warranty, you’d be silly to dismiss it as an option, and the 2020 Mitsubishi RVR deserves to be taken seriously by those in the market for a subcompact SUV.

 Yes the RVR has some well-known serious competitors in the segment. What do they say when you’re number two you try harder, well when you’re number five you’ll try even harder. Truth is Mitsubishi doesn’t need to try harder, at the risk of repeating myself, it already has an affordable fuel-efficient, reliability proven SUV with an industry-best warranty. The problem is getting the word out.

The UK’s most and least reliable new and used cars have been revealed in the 2021 What Car?
Reliability Survey from Britain’s leading new car buying platform and consumer champion. Feedback from more than 16,000 car owners was analysed to find the country’s most dependable 178 models and 30 brands, from nearly new cars to those aged up to five years old.  This year, a record six models achieved a score of 100%: the current versions of the Audi TT, Mazda CX-3, Mini Convertible and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the previous-generation Dacia Sandero and Honda HR-V.  At brand level, Lexus and Dacia models were hailed as the most dependable for new and used buyers, while Fiat and Land Rover achieved the lowest scores.   Lexus gained an overall rating of 98.7% and none of its vehicles scored lower than 98.4%. Budget brand Dacia also impressed with a 97.3% overall rating, demonstrating that you don’t have to break the bank to buy a dependable model. In contrast, Fiat had the least reliable cars, gaining an 82.0% rating from owners, while Land Rover and Ford were second and third worst for reliability. Hybrids were rated as the most durable type of car, with an average class reliability score of 96.9%. The best performing hybrid was the Lexus NX (2014 – present), which managed a 99.8% score, while hybrid variants of the BMW X5 (2018 – present) were rated least reliable, with 89.7%. Luxury SUVs performed the worst in the study, achieving an average class rating of 88.8%, although the Porsche Macan (2014 – present) bucked the trend, managing a creditable 97.9%. The Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) received the lowest score in this class with a 72.1% result. Owners were asked whether their car had gone wrong in the past 12 months, how long repairs took and how much they cost, with the overall score expressed as a percentage.  Of the 16,328 drivers surveyed, 20% had experienced a fault with their car in the past year, with 85% of faults repaired free of charge. For 7% of drivers, the repairs cost between £101 and £500, while 2% had to pay more than £1500 to get their car back on the road. A third of cars remained driveable and were fixed within a day, while 25% could be driven but took more than a week to repair.  What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The UK’s used car market is currently booming, making it all the more important that people know which models will be reliable. The adapted van
I am currently looking for a van. I am a disabled person and I drive in my wheelchair. The SAAQ, which subsidizes the adaptation of my vehicle, obliges me to buy a new vehicle (2 years old maximum or 5000 km). I would like to be able to keep my vehicle as long as possible. I hesitate between the Dodge Grand Caravan and the Toyota Sienna. Many people tell me that for my use (weekend rides and a few trips), a Dodge would do the job. Others tell me to go with Sienna if I can afford it despite the $ 10,000 extra. It is more reliable, the repairs are less expensive, and I must admit that the cabin is much more ergonomic and licked than that of the Dodge. I would greatly appreciate your point of view.

The Grand Caravan will have no trouble meeting your needs. It is also true that the Sienna is generally more reliable (and above all easier to sell), but the Dodge does not demerify either. That said, you could also consider Kia's Sedona, whose suggested retail price is more appealing than Sienna's. It offers good reliability, attractive presentation and above all a more generous guarantee than the two aforementioned models.

We are currently renting a Subaru Impreza (which I really like) that is scheduled for completion in July 2020. We are looking for an automatic transmission SUV or a wagon with technology, recent, very comfortable (since we intend to make a return trip) Montreal-Vancouver), with a significant load capacity and fuel economy ... We hesitate between the Subaru Crosstrek, a Toyota RAV4, a Sportwagon and a Volkswagen Alltrack. I am also open to Kia and Honda products. What do you advise us?

You already have a nice skewer. If you've been satisfied with the Subaru service so far and considering that your lease expires in the summer of 2020, the Crosstrek in its plug-in hybrid configuration is a choice to consider. Just like the hybrid RAV4, more spacious and more comfortable. And if we believe the rumor, the RAV4 should include in its ranks a plug-in hybrid version too. But by the summer of 2020, there may be other novelties that may interest you. So, do not stop your choice right away.

To find the smile
We are a retired couple. We have been in the countryside since retirement and need an SUV (fishing, cottage and icy country lanes in winter). If I keep the same dealer, my SUV choice boils down to the Lexus NX300. It's not my favorite, but I was told it would be the most beneficial if I want to get rid of my IS 300 sedan, which I hated. My choices go personally to the Acura RDX or more modestly for the Toyota RAV4. I could then endure the IS 300 for the few months remaining at my rental ... What do you think?

If your choice boils down to the NX300 and you do not like it, why consider it? It's time to smile again, and the Acura RDX is much more consistent (comfort, versatility, dynamic performance) than the NX. The RAV4 in its Trail configuration (nearly $ 40,000, though) is also a good idea, but in rental, you'll probably get better terms with Acura and, what's more, a more generous warranty.

Which model of car corresponds to my needs? I am 71 years old, I drive Honda Civic for 42 years, I travel around 10,000 or 12,000 km a year. My current Honda is 11 years old and I would like to change cars by 2020 at the latest. The recent Honda Civic are too big for my needs. My criteria: automatic transmission, four doors, heated seat, good performance in winter, boarding access higher. I prefer Japanese. My budget: between $ 25,000 and $ 30,000.

Since you seem to like Honda products, you may be interested in the HR-V. It offers an elevated driving position and the all-wheel drive (to be considered for better winter performance). In the same category - urban SUVs - there is also the Mazda CX-3 (rather dry suspension and less versatile than the HR-V, however) or the Subaru Crosstrek, but you might find it a little big.

The MG ZS is a fancy crossover which borders on being a SUV. I was surprised to find a panoramic sunroof on the ZS, something which none of its rivals have. The cabin has enough space to accommodate 5 adults. But 4 would be the ideal number to ride comfortably. There’s enough leg space and knee room on the seats. Jan 27, 2021 MG ZS Launch: Earlier this month, MG Pakistan launched another crossover SUV, MG ZS. The 1500cc vehicle is kind of base variant of MG ZS, as it comes without Panoramic Sunroof or Turbocharged engine. As per the company, it has started the booking of ZS at price of Rs4,099,000, making it cheapest compact SUV in Pakistan.

1. MG ZS 2019 Philippines Review: Introduction
MG or Morris Garages first officially appeared in the Philippines back in 2015. But as of 2018, The Covenant Car Company Incorporated (TCCI), the same firm behind the Chevrolet brand here, has taken up the position of being MG’s official distributor here in the country.
MG isn’t by any means a new or even young car company. This is immediately apparent when upon visiting one of their dealerships here. You would notice the text below the MG logo which says “Since 1924.”
Once called MG Car Company Limited, the company has produced very interesting vehicles such as the very successful T-Series and the MGF roadster under the Rover Group. As of 2005 however, the Nanjing Automobile Group has since acquired the British car company and all its assets and as such has enjoyed a much larger availability worldwide.
Nanjing itself merged with the SAIC Group in 2008. MG has since sold cars in Australia, Chile, China, Thailand, the United Kingdom and, of course, the Philippines.

The MG ZS (pronounced “zed es”) crossover actually shares its name with a 2001 saloon which the car company made under the Rover badge. Announced back in 2016 at the Guangzhou Auto Show, the MG ZS is the second time MG has dipped its hand in the crossover market.
Additionally, it is intended to lie in between the large MG RX5 SUV and the smaller MG 3 hatchback which is sadly not available here in the Philippines. Now let’s take a closer look at this new crossover through our MG ZS 2019 Philippines review brought byPhilkotse.com.
2. MG ZS 2019 Philippines: Exterior Review
For a crossover with its price, the five-door, five-seater MG ZS 2019 is a good car to look at. It does not have as much road presence as, say, Mazda CX-5 but otherwise it is much larger looking than the more expensive Ford Ecosport. But let us talk more about the ZS’s price later.
Suffice to say, the 2019 MG ZS exterior looks much closer to the aforementioned because of its equally sizable grille at the front and probably the overall profile of the vehicle as well. Another thing to note is the availability of roof brackets to allow for a roof rack which adds to the practicality of the MG ZS.

2019 MG ZS Review! New Motoring
Overall, the MG ZS seems to have borrowed a lot of design cues from its competitors, but in this case, that isn’t exactly a bad thing as the car overall looks fine. It is good to note however that as MG is developing more and more vehicles, the time will inevitably come that the company can create its own unique look for their vehicles.
The affordable crossover measures 4,314 mm in length, 1,809 mm in width, and is 1,648 mm in height. It has a long 2,585-mm wheelbase and weighs 1,258 kilograms. Surprisingly enough, the Ecosport is actually much longer but the MG ZS is a little bit wider.

Other MG ZS exterior amenities include fog lights, a power-adjustable rear view mirror, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a rear window wiper. As of now, the MG ZS comes in six creatively named colors; Scottish Silver, Meteorite Black, Extreme Speed Red, Moon White, and Electro-optic Orange.

3. MG ZS 2019 Philippines: Interior Review
Before talking about anything else, one surprising feature of the 2019 MG ZS interior is that it comes with a panoramic sunroof which many of its competitors have yet to provide. Now moving on to the interior design itself, everything looks fine and the buttons and controls are fairly ergonomically positioned - within easy reach.
The pedals are placed just right, and everything within the MG ZS is simple and logical. What we’re not a big fan of however is that MG decided to use fake carbon fiber which is extremely prominent around the infotainment system and around the shifter. Another nitpick we simply cannot ignore are the drab color choices for the MG ZS’s interior.
The MG ZS interior looks clean and the equipment is ergonomically placed
Upon closer inspection of the MG ZS infotainment system, it is surprisingly good with just a little latency compared to many used in other cars. Its homepage thankfully adds much-needed life and color inside the simple cabin. The infotainment system of the MG ZS can play FM/AM radio, has Bluetooth connectivity, and has USB and AUX ports which are all made audible by fairly decent front and rear speakers.

In terms of seating, MG claims that the ZS crossover can comfortably seat five. We would disagree with that point however and would claim that it is better suited to four, owing to the bulging center of the rear passenger bench. As for knee space and headroom, we have no complaints about.
Other comfort features that come with the MG ZS interior are air-conditioning, power windows, automatic climate control, a heater, fold-down seats which you can also adjust manually, accessory power outlets, and a power trunk opener which opens up to fair-sized boot.
4. MG ZS 2019 Philippines: Specs & Engine
The engine that powers the 2019 MG ZS crossover is a 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine which produces a decent 118hp and 150Nm of torque. That’s competitive compared to other existing crossovers in the market.
The engine, however, is a bit rough sounding but otherwise runs well with enough power and economy for a crossover within its price range. Peak power for the MG ZS is achieved by revving the engine high at about 6,000 rpm, so that’s one thing that needs to be improved.

The current engine, however, is a good choice as there is also an MG ZS 1.0-liter turbocharged engine available in other markets which sources say underperforms and is slower than the 1.5 one available here in the Philippines.
The MG ZS 2019 can come with a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic. The manual in question feels light and responsive. But when you’re running on the highway, the five-speed may be inadequate, and a six-speed would’ve been better for better highway gas economy. Otherwise, though it’s a good tranny all around.

The suspension overall is comfortable and is on the soft side as one would expect from a crossover; comfortable and promising a good ride over minor bumps on the road. The other side of this is that the MG ZS’s soft suspension causes a bit of roll. Furthermore, when it comes to the steering, feedback is lacking.
Despite those gripes, the MG ZS is a comfortable ride and driving it down a typical road in the city feels okay. It doesn’t stand out by any means in this regard but it’s good for a vehicle of its price.

The MG ZS is designed around a rigid safety cage made from high-strength steel. All variants also come equipped with airbags, seatbelt reminders, electronic brake distribution, cornering brake control, child locks, and ISOFIX child seat mounting points.

After spending time with both systems, this is an easy decision. Get the bigger 10.25-inch screen. The standard 7-inch device is Basic – iPhone 6 Basic Level. The 10.25-inch screen with the UVO system is a gem and offers clear, crisp images in an intuitive layout. The extra wide length brings three really helpful things – navigation, audio and weather – to the foreground and to the center. If one of them doesn't sound important, there are numerous customization options that you can use to set priorities as you wish.
The soul's security features follow the same trajectory as their infotainment systems. All you get with the base panel is a rear view camera. The higher the ladder you climb, the more you get. The GT-Line Turbo is filled with almost everything under the sun, including blind spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning. A retractable head-up display is also included in the security cocktail.
Most of the driver assistance functions work as desired – with the exception of Lane Keeping Assist. This fool will pull the wheel out of your hands to keep you from drifting on another trail. Some nitpickers may think that the head-up screen looks cheap too. That may be true, but it works and it's a feature you won't find on Honda HR-V and Nissan Kicks.
Experience behind the wheel
Two drive trains are available for the soul. Five of the six fairings are equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 147 hp and 132 pound-feet of torque. The engine is coupled to a continuously variable transmission, which Kia calls "intelligent variable transmission" or IVT.

Pushing the throttle from a standstill does not result in immediate power supply, which makes parking a difficult situation.

In addition to the engine, the GT-Line Turbo has a firmer suspension. The ride is stiff, but the soul doesn't feel smooth in corners because the box-shaped design limits its true performance potential. Ironically, the front-wheel drive layout of the Soul is not a deal breaker. Other small cars like the Nissan Kicks and the Toyota C-HR are also only equipped with front-wheel drive. They still have 6.7 inches of ground clearance, which is a decent amount to deal with snow. However, if you want real off-road skills, you have to look at the Jeep Renegade.
With the problems of the powertrain and the particularly bumpy ride, which does not offer any real sporting potential, the expensive GT-Line turbo fairing is an easy pass.
Fuel consumption and security
The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2020 Kia Soul up to 31 mpg (29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway) when it is equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the CVT. If you choose the sportier GT-Line turbo fairing with the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and seven-speed dual clutch transmission, you will see 29 MPG combined (27 MPG City, 32 MPG Highway).
These are not bad numbers for the small car segment, but they bring the soul behind the Nissan Kicks, which are rated at 33 mpg, and the new Hyundai Venue, which is rated at 32 mpg. But the Soul is a bit more efficient than the Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona, both of which have a fuel consumption of 30 mpg.
Since the Soul is completely new for the 2020 model year, it is difficult to say how reliable the vehicle will be on the road. The CUV compact car has one of the longest warranties on the market: a 10-year powertrain warranty of 100,000 miles and a five-year warranty of 60,000 miles. This is better than Nissan or Honda cars.
As a new vehicle, the Soul has not yet undergone a crash test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In the tests carried out by the Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS), the soul did well enough to be recognized as a top safety trick.
How DT would configure this car
Due to the problems with the drivetrain and driving behavior, we recommend skipping the GT-Line turbo fairing. Nevertheless, we like the EX trim best. It has the same 10.25-inch touchscreen, the same UVO infotainment system, and the same wireless charger as the top model, but has a more efficient powertrain.
The 2020 Soul has a more muscular aesthetic that stands out from the enchanting look of the last generation model.

Our opinion
Despite testing the probably worst option in the lineup, the 2020 Kia Soul is a great CUV. Its appearance isn't for everyone, but it stands out in a segment that's filled with boring options. It's also practical with one of the largest holds, lots of technical features, and an efficient powertrain. All of this is packaged in one of the fanciest designs and comes with one of the longest guarantees.
If you are looking for a suitable off-road suitability, you have to choose the Jeep Renegade. For those looking for a vehicle with a design that doesn't stand out, check out the Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Kona, or Honda HR-V.
The kicks don't have all-wheel drive as an option, but the other two. Neither the Kicks nor the HR-V are equipped with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as standard, but both have safety suites in the middle of their respective lineups instead of random functions that are sporadically distributed. As usual, Kia has offered the Soul at a competitive price, and between these rivals, it's the cheapest option.
With so many options in the subcompact segment, there is bound to be an option that does something better than the soul. As a complete package, however, it is a rounded CUV that does a lot of good at a low price and makes it one of the better options on the market.
Should you get one?
Yes. The soul is a great value with a funky, functional design. Just stay away from the GT Line.

2021 Kia Seltos Review: Standout Subompact SUV
The hits keep on coming for Kia. This time it’s the 2021 Kia Seltos, a rugged little SUV with a handsome exterior, good passenger and cargo space, and very good handling for a subcompact vehicle that slots between the Kia Soul and Kia Sportage. With the turbo engine on upper models, it’s right quick.
It’s important to pick the right trim line because Kia goes light on driver assists on the entry Seltos. You’ll probably want middle trim levels, Seltos S Turbo or EX. Option the car right and you can also have a 10.2-inch infotainment display, all-wheel-drive, and reasonable off-roading-lite experiences. Be prepared to live with firm suspension and some cabin noise at highway speeds.
Overall, this is a great first car for people who’d prefer to spend for a new subcompact vehicle rather than, say, a two- or three-year-old compact SUV of the Sportage class. It’s also as an around-town runabout or a car for people who don’t need a status symbol. Although, from a head-on view, it could be mistaken for Kia’s wildly successful Telluride SUV.

The Seltos is based on the Hyundai Kona, which arrived as a 2018 model.  The Seltos shipped to global markets a year ago, and now in the US. At 172 inches, it’s 8 inches longer than Kona, also 2 inches taller, which pays off in more cargo space as well as a bit more room in both seating rows. On the Road With Seltos
I test-drove the Seltos S Turbo with all-wheel drive, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry, cruise control (not adaptive cruise), a leather steering wheel, and a reasonable driver-assist package. It gets to 60 mph in about 7 seconds. In a week of driving split between city and highway, I got 28 mpg, about where the EPA sets the combined driving figure.
The seats are supportive and the cockpit shows good build quality, although there are some hard plastics (with no padded trim covering) that attest to the Seltos’ affordable price point. The driver’s knee may scrape the (also not padded) center console. The cargo area is quite spacious for a small car. Handling is good, although the flip side to that is a ride that’s stiffer than passengers might like on highways.
It would have been nice to have had more than one USB jack in a car with seat belts for five, even knowing that automotive-grade jacks can cost automakers $20-plus.
If you’re a fan of the Kia Soul and want all-wheel-drive, you’re looking at the solution: one of the Seltos trim lines with AWD. It’s 7 inches longer than the Soul.
Seltos Trim Lines
The Seltos comes in five trim lines (model variants) – LX, S, S Turbo, EX, and SX – and the trim lines take the place of options packages. The few options include two-tone paint and sunroof, although production constraints currently force you to pick sunroof or two-tone paint, not both. There are two engines, a 146-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a continuously variable transmission, rated at 29 mpg city / 34 mpg highway, and the 175-hp 1.6-liter turbo-four rated at 25 mpg city, 30 mpg highway.

The Kia Seltos LX is soft on safety and driver assists. The S Turbo hits the sweet spot. Only the SX ($29K) has it all – including Level 2 self-driving.
Driver Assists for the Upmarket Models
Kia offers a lot of Seltos driver assists, including SAE Level 2 self-driving (called Highway Driving Assist). But as you browse the Kia site, eventually you’ll find most of it is not on the cheapest model. (Minor annoyance: the Seltos’ underwhelming website only lets you cross-compare three of the five trim lines at a time. The table above, from kia.com, was snipped in segments from the site and stitched together in Photoshop. Harrumph.) The entry LX, $23,110 including shipping, with all-wheel-drive, has no driver assists beyond a reminder to check the rear seats when exiting, as well as the federally mandated backup camera. The Seltos S, the same price but with front-drive, adds a front-windshield camera that provides automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning/lane centering, and automatic high beams.
The S Turbo and EX (both AWD) add blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The top trim line, SX, is the only one with full-range adaptive cruise and active driving assistance (Highway Driving Assist), as well as safe exit assist that uses blind-spot warning to keep the left-side doors from opening into approaching traffic. The top-line SX with optional sunroof and premium paint runs $30,055.

Should You Buy the Seltos?
There are several good cars in the subcompact crossover category. As a group, they’re luring passengers away from compact sedans. The Seltos is one of the best and the interior room is good.
The strongest challenger is the new Mazda CX-30, an excellent driving car with great handling, an upscale cockpit, and a quieter ride on the highway. The older, smaller Mazda CX-3 is still a good car, but aging.
The Subaru Crosstrek is highly regarded and has a good reputation for reliability and being able to go lightly off-road, just not over boulders. Also look at the Nissan Rogue Sport, Ford EcoSport, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue, and Honda HR-V.
If you like the Kia family, both the smaller Kia Soul and larger Kia Sportage are first-rate. (The Kia Niro SUV, an inch shorter than the Seltos, is sold as a hybrid/plug-in hybrid.)
As for the Seltos, you should probably avoid the entry model because it lacks driver safety assists. Note that Toyota’s cheapest C-HR LE ($22K) has extensive driver assists, even adaptive cruise control, and the only missing safety assist, blind-spot detection, is on the C-HR XLE ($24K). We’re not recommending the C-HR over the Seltos because it’s got less room, poor visibility, soft acceleration, and lacks all-wheel-drive. But if Toyota can put all that safety tech on every trim line of an entry vehicle, so can Kia.
The S Turbo and EX represent the bang-for-the-buck sweet spot, while the SX is very well equipped for long-distance highway driving, even if it doesn’t ride as smoothly as, say, the larger Sportage. If you’re shopping small SUVs, you need to drive the Seltos. Between Kia and corporate siblings Hyundai and Genesis, they have launched almost 10 vehicles since the start of 2019, and all have been good, excellent, or, in the case of the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Hyundai Sonata, best-in-class.
