Pickup Trucks Getting Huge. Got Problem With That?
A FEW MONTHS ago, on an ordinary day in an unremarkable
Costco
parking lot, I was nearly squashed by an unusually large pickup. Thank God I was wearing a mask.
As that chrome grille closed on me like a man-eating Norelco shaver, time slowed. It seemed I was watching myself from afar, being nimble for a man my age, darting from the path of a towering, limousine-black pickup with temporary plates, whose driver barely checked his pace. Jerk.
What the hell was that thing? A 2020 GMC Sierra HD Denali? It was huge! The domed hood was at forehead level. The paramedics would have had to extract me from the grille with a spray hose, like Randall Jarrell’s ball-turret gunner.
He didn’t even see me.
Later, returning to my car, I noticed something: The parking lot was dotted with similarly enormous luxury pickups—many new, many taking up two spaces: Ram,
Ford,
Chevy, GMC. They stood out like Percherons in a herd of Shetland ponies.
“ Are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? Both. The average pickup gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019. ”
What is going on here? When did pickups get so big? And why are XL-sized pickups so big now?
I know. Pickup trucks at Costco. Film at 11. Except that in April, U.S. sales of pickups surpassed automobiles for the first time ever—about 112 years, give or take. Trucks and truck-based sport-utilities now account for roughly 70% of new vehicles sold in the U.S.
How we came to be Pickup Nation is a longer story (cheap gas, the Chicken Tax, IRS Section 179, marketing). But this year, to help move the tin during the pandemic, U.S. auto makers laid out a bounty of discounts and cheap financing, including 0% interest for 84 months and deferred-payment plans.
“Pickups without a doubt benefited from the great deals,” said Mark Schirmer, spokesperson for market service providers Cox Automotive. “And the deals were particularly great for consumers buying expensive vehicles.” The data suggest these incentives also juiced a boomlet in XL-sized, heavy-duty pickups, otherwise known as ¾-ton and 1-ton pickups, for private use.
That’s right: Gucci cowboys. Historically aimed at commercial customers, sole proprietors, horse-haulers and mega-RVers, heavy-duty pickups are stronger and taller than ordinary (half-ton) trucks, with cabs mounted high above reinforced frame rails and heavy, long-travel suspensions. But HD trucks have evolved in the past decade, irradiated with the same prestige-luxury rays as light-duty trucks.
Behold MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year, the Ram Heavy-Duty. In Limited trim (about $65,000 with four-wheel drive but before options) the 2500 HD sports an elaborate chromified grille that gleams like a tea service. Its flight deck glows with untrucky amenities such as acoustically insulated glass; active noise canceling; 12-inch center touch screen; wood trim, premium leather—all paired with a maximum 19,680-pound towing capacity. With the optional cab lights, it measures over 6-feet-9 inches tall.
Thus has been born a uniquely American vehicle type: the mega-luxury mega-pickup.
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
The dimensions of Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ. Just how big?
Tumblr media
Photo: Chevrolet
81.85 in. wide
79.82 in. tall
249.95 in. long
It seems to be resonating. While sales of Silverado light-duty were off 18.6% in the second quarter, sales of the HD model sales were off less than a point. GMC’s light-duty Sierra was down 9.5%, while sales of our menacing new friend, the Sierra HD, were up 7.6% in the second quarter and 21.5% year-to-date.
Ford and
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
don’t break out HD sales from pickups overall. However, Ram’s average transaction price in the second quarter soared above $50,000, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of data from Kelley Blue Book. Ford F-Series sales fell 23% (to 180,825 units) but its ATP was mostly unaffected—$51,688, the highest among pickups.
In July, J.D. Power declared Sierra HD the king of the bro-dozers, placing it first in its 2020 U.S. APEAL Study of Large Heavy-Duty Pickups, which tracks owners’ excitement and emotional attachment in the first 90 days.
“The front end was always the focal point,” GM designer Karan Moorjani told Muscle Cars & Trucks e-zine. “We spent a lot of time making sure that when you stand in front of this thing it looks like it’s going to come get you.”
Mission accomplished.
But are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? The answers are somewhat and definitely. The average pickup on the road gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and 730 pounds since 2000.
“One of the most significant changes in that time was the arrival of crew-cab configurations, which added cab space to make them more family and work friendly,” said Mike Levine, Ford spokesperson.
In 2011, a change in the way the feds calculate vehicle fuel economy (the so-called “footprint rule”) gave domestic truck makers incentive to go big. Ever since, GMC, Chevy, Ram and Ford have been locked in a competitive feedback loop chasing best-in-class attributes and capacities—the “towing/hauling” wars. For MY 2019, for example, Ram’s 1500 Crew Cab gained 3.9 inches in overall length over a 4.1-inch longer wheelbase. In the same model-year, the Chevy Silverado gained 1.7 inches in length on a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase.
As a result, new light-duty pickup dimensions are approaching those of heavy-duty pickups. While the 2021 F-150 is about 18 inches shorter than the equivalent F-250, it is the same width (79.9). Mr. Levine noted that the company has gone to a common-cab design, using the same four-door living quarters for both light- and heavy-duty models.
“ ‘The face of these trucks is where the action is, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.’ ”
Ask any kid with a crayon. If you draw the box in the middle bigger, you have to make the ones on the end bigger, too.
Which brings us to the 2020 Silverado HD—10 inches longer, 1.8 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the previous model. The big Chevy’s challenging kisser comprises a thick, knee-high bumper; a central grille opening; several sets of lighting assemblies; a full-width transverse element helpfully informing with the message CHEVROLET…and then, above that, between very square corners, is a whole other layer, then a peaked hood with a central inlet. This hood line meets the base of the windshield about 6 inches above the side window sill.
Another cause of facial swelling? Marketing. “Full-size pickups are generally identical in profile,” Mr. Schirmer said. “The face of these trucks is where the action is; a Ford has to say Ford from head on, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.”
You don’t have to be Steven Pinker to see that truck designers are leaning into the bully with these lantern-jawed bumpers and walls of chrome. Detroit’s blithe codifications of purposeful and powerful pickup design fail to describe the intimidation factor from the outside.
“A few brands, Ram and Ford, have taken to an overscale brand identity [and] applied it onto the grille,” said Kimberly Marte, associate professor of design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. “The Chevy team did benchmarking of new models and followed the trend.”
It’s not clear how long pickup designs can keep getting their chrome on. In 2018 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study examining the connection between SUV design and pedestrian fatalities. In a separate study released in June, IIHS found fatal single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs striking pedestrians increased 81% from 2009 to 2016.
While IIHS studied SUVs and not pickups, “The key is the geometry of the front end, the high and flat shape,” said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer for IIHS. “It’s like hitting a wall.”
XL-pickups’ high-rising hoods also create significant blind spots just ahead of the vehicle. I know because apparently I was in one of them. While truck makers like Ford offer automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection systems as standard equipment on most trims, and forward-view cameras as an option, such systems are not mandatory, as they would be in Europe.
NHTSA proposed that new pedestrian-safety tests for SUVs and trucks be included in the New Car Assessment Program in 2015. But as of this writing, the agency had not issued guidance on new standards. When asked, the industry trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation had no comment.
And what if the next administration should issue pickup-pedestrian safety rules? Could the extra tall hoods and bluff grilles, the sightlines, the scale, the very form language of the traditional American pickup ever be made pedestrian safe? “Of course not,” said Ms. Marte. “No way.”
So watch yourself at Costco.
TOO BIG FOR ITS BRITCHES?
Sizing up Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500HD
Tumblr media
Photo: Chevrolet
HIGH-END HOOD: Modern pickups like the Silverado 2500 HD LT with Z71 Off-Road Package appear huge not just because roofs have gotten taller (topping out around 80 inches), but because hoods have grown relative to a truck’s overall height.
KING-SIZE BED: The 2020 Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab with Standard Bed is 10.3 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the 2019 model.
GAUDY GRILLE: The vast chrome rictus of Chevy’s Silverado has been coolly received by some critics and customers. But Silverado sales are up, and there’s a booming business in aftermarket grilles.
A STEP UP: To assist you in boarding its very tall seat—which maintains proportionality with the height of the hood, the 2021 Silverado HD High Country is available with power running boards that automatically slide out to meet you.

MORE SWANK, LESS SCHLEP
How Ford’s uber-popular F-150 pickup has changed shape and style since 1995
PICKUPS AND SUVS have become the vehicles of choice for U.S. drivers over the last 25 years. Along the way, they’ve also become less trucklike, emphasizing comfort as well as capability. Take the F-150, the flagship of Ford’s F-Series, America’s bestselling vehicles 43 years running, which has morphed from rural work truck into a daily-driving people-mover as suburbanites ditched minivans in droves. The bestselling F-150 of 1995 was a rigid two-door set with a 6.5-foot bed; today’s bestselling F-150 has four doors, copious creature comforts, and a cargo box that’s a full foot shorter. —Aaron Stern

Ford vs. Chevy vs. Ram Heavy-Duty Trucks: How the Monster Gas V-8s Compare
With all the pickup truck buzz centered on powertrain efficiency (such as with the Ford Ranger) and the two newest half-ton diesels (Silverado 1500 Duramax and Ram 1500 EcoDiesel), some might think that big and brawny gas engines will go extinct. Not true. In fact, some of the most powerful, efficient, and technologically advanced powertrains on the market will be sitting under the hood of heavy-duty trucks from Chevy, Ford, GMC, and Ram.
This year, Ford and General Motors introduce completely new gas V-8 engines . In the case of GM, the new unit replaces a 20-year-old 6.0-liter V-8 gas engine. Ford, meanwhile, is adding a larger gas engine choice to its lineup while keeping the existing “smallish” 6.2-liter gas V-8 for its budget-minded Super Duty customers. And finally, Ram, which once offered an 8.0-liter V-10 in the Ram HD line, updated its existing 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 gas engine (set to be the smallest of the group now) just last year.
Generally speaking, gas V-8 engines are a fairly rare order in the HD class, with the vast majority of heavy-duty trucks equipped with the more muscle-bound turbodiesel option. Still, a small number of personal-use buyers and commercial fleet buyers like having an efficient and easy-to-maintain traditional gas engine option. And after a long period of stasis, it’s good to see all of the big pickup makers upping their gas V-8 game.
Here’s how their specs compare.
Chevrolet/GMC (6.6-liter direct-injected 16-valve V-8)
The Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 will offer GM’s all-new gen-five 6.6-liter gas V-8 (that shares almost nothing with the existing light-duty all-aluminum 6.2-liter V-8) and will be mated to a lightly upgraded six-speed transmission. Structurally, the new V-8 will have a cast-iron block and aluminum heads, with a torque-biased overhead valve setup and two valves per cylinder, running a 10.8:1 compression ratio.
Unlike either of the small-block gas engine choices in their light-duty segment (with the 6.2-liter and 5.7-liter V-8s), GM did not equip this new engine with any cylinder deactivation technology , but did include class-exclusive direct fuel injection. Additionally, this V-8 is the first of its family to offer a variable-displacement oil pump to keep it well lubed in all types of environments and work cycles. Factory power ratings for the 6.6-liter V-8 are 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, and 464 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a max bumper-pull trailering capacity of 17,400 pounds (regular cab longbed 4×2).
Ford (7.3-liter multiport-injected 16-valve V-8)
Ford is redesigning and upgrading its 2020 Super Duty lineup, specifically adding new trims, improving its chassis and powertrain, and adding an all-new, bigger and stronger gas V-8 option. The new motor will be the larger of two V-8 engines, both offering a cast-iron block, aluminum heads, and a traditional overhead valve, two-valves-per-cylinder setup. The newest V-8 will displace 7.3 liters and will be smaller on the outside and lighter than the modular 6.8-liter V-10 option it replaces, and it will be mated to an all-new, Ford-built 10-speed transmission, upsized and strengthened for Super Duty service.
Engine features include multiport injection along with a more efficient variable-displacement oil pump, which will now be capable of moving small amounts of liquid quickly for faster warmups or a lot of oil around to remove more heat faster. There is no cylinder deactivation or fuel shutoff technology included at this time.
Power ratings recently released are a segment-best at 430 hp at 5,500 rpm and 475 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Although it’s not yet announced, we’re guessing max trailering capacity for the new trucks will be bumping close to the 20,000-pound range. (According to current specification data, the 6.2-liter gas V-8 Super Duty engine option has a max trailering capacity of 16,200 pounds.) We expect more information to be released before these trucks actually go on sale before the end of the year.
Ram HD (6.4-liter twin-plug multiport-injected 16-valve V-8)
The Ram HD lineup made a lot of noise at the last Detroit auto show, where they announced the newest version of the 6.7-liter I-6 B-motor Cummins turbodiesel—the first HD pickup to deliver 1,000 lb-ft of torque (Ram 3500 HO Cummins Dually only). Additionally though much less sexy, Ram engineers made a few powertrain upgrades to the existing 6.4-liter Hemi V-8. Of special note, an all-new heavy-duty eight-speed transmission (complete with Ram’s signature dash rotary control dial—no column stick will be offered) backs up the freshened cast-iron block/aluminum heads 6.4-liter gas V-8.
The engine uses an overhead valve setup with two valves per cylinder, using a modified hemispherical-type combustion chamber with a unique twin-sparkplug design for a more complete combustion chamber burn—the delivery is via multiport fuel injection with a 10.0:1 compression ratio. And like all the V-8 engines in this segment, Ram’s Hemi recommends 87-octane fuel.
Finally, the 6.4-liter Hemi is the only HD engine in the segment to offer both a cylinder deactivation mode, capable of running in V-4 mode, and the capability of shutting fuel off during certain low-demand scenarios (such as downhill braking or coming to a stop). Factory engine ratings are 410 hp at 5,600 rpm and 429 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a max trailering capacity of 18,200 pounds (regular cab long-bed 4×2).
As noted, none of the pickup makers sells lots of these engines, but when they do, they’re usually to big-volume fleet buyers who are looking for a long-lasting, low-maintenance/repair-cost choice. And given their cost effectiveness, this new crop of big V-8s—producing some big power and torque numbers—will likely offer a tremendous power-to-cost ratio. And who knows? We can always hope these same engines might find their way into a half-ton specialty performance package or a full-size SUV. Regardless, we look forward to getting these engines on the dyno and out in the real world to see how they compare when pulling a heavy load. Stay tuned.

First Drive: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HDCosta Mouzouris / Driving BEND, Oregon If you drive a heavy-duty pickup, Chevrolet is calling you fat. Really. Just look at this claim, lifted directly from the press release of the 2020 Silverado HD: The all-new 2020 Silverado HD is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor and is scaled for HD customers. Maybe its time to hit the gym.Alright, theres no need to send angry letters to GM telling them that youll drive a Ford from now on. More accurately, what Chevrolet is saying is that it has scaled up its heavy-duty trucks to meet the increasing demands of HD truck customers. Owners want to get more out of their trucks in terms of capability, because according to Chevy they are working those trucks harder. The 2020 Silverado HD is 40 millimetres taller, 35 millimetres wider, and up to 264 millimetres longer than before, and the wheelbase has been lengthened by up to 132 millimetres. Volume has been increased in both the 6.9- and eight-foot beds, to 1,728 and 2,162 litres (up 242 and 202) respectively. Two engines are available. One is the all-new and much more powerful 6.6-litre direct-injected V8 that develops 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, up 41 hp and 81 lb.-ft. compared to the outgoing 6.0L V8. Like before, it powers a six-speed automatic transmission. The other engine is the optional 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 that claims 445 horsepower, and almost double the gas engines torque, at 910 lb.-ft. While

This truck can tow, as max towing increases a large 52 percentage to 35,500(!) pounds. Payload is also manner up, sitting at 7,466 kilos. Making those numbers possible is the Duramax 6.6-liter faster-diesel V8. It produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-ft of torque. a larger 28-inch mechanical fan is now used to cool the diesel engine. GM is pairing this engine with a new Allison 10-velocity computerized transmission. The engine is smart, too. If it's too hot after hauling, a message within the cluster will tell the motive force to preserve the engine on. in case you grow to be ignoring that and turning it off, the faraway-start system will mechanically prompt to chill the engine down. Chevy says every component among the transmission and wheels have been upgraded to address the improved towing load. It has a 30 percentage large (in diameter) prop shaft. The box ladder frame has been made harder, and the axles are larger. a new 6.6-liter V8 fuel engine is trendy — this unit makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, greater strength and thrust than before. Chevy says it bills for a 18 percent advantage in towing capability for the gas engine model. This engine is based-off Chevy's 6.0-liter V8, but uses a 6-mm longer stroke and direct injection to make the extra energy. Chevrolet exerted a lot of attempt to make this truck tow-pleasant. It bested both the new Ram Heavy duty and the outgoing 2019 Ford notable duty numbers by means of small margins for max towing. but, Ford's discern is probable to climb for the 2020 version yr. Chevy's new trailering machine gives up to fifteen digicam angles, with one in every of them being the cool "transparent trailer" view that allows you spot at the back of what you're towing. a brand new Park Grade hold assist function can now use all 4 service brakes (not just the parking brakes) to keep a truck stopped on a hill with a heavy load. in the cabin you may have even more space to sprawl out, as Chevy has expanded the HD length and wheelbase. One neat little function is a VIN-particular trailering records label on each truck. The label lists slash weight, GVWR, gross combined weight score, max payload, max tongue weight, gross axle weight score and 5th-wheel and gooseneck ratings. The approach you might not need to seek advice from Google or dig thru manuals to understand what you could or can not haul. five trim stages might be provided to start with consisting of: paintings Truck, custom, LT, LTZ and excessive u . s . a .. Ford vs. Chevrolet vs. Ram: Heavy-Duty Truck Prioritizer
Answering these eight simple questions can help you determine which of the new heavy-duty trucks is the best fit for you.
Read about the new 2019 Ram HD, 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty, 2020 GMC Sierra HD, and 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD here:
2019 Ram Heavy Duty First Look: Making Nice
2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty First Look: Super Is as Super Does
2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD First Look: Easy Does It
2020 GMC Sierra HD First Look: Heavy-Duty Competition
Am I an open-minded shopper in search of the best truck?
Absolutely: Keep reading
Not really: Stop pretend-researching on the internet and go buy the brand your family has bought since granpappy got his license in ’46. (Note to Dodge chauvinists who’ve been out of the market for a decade or so: Buy Ram.)
How important is payload?
Max me out: Each of the heavies achieves its highest payload rating with the gas engine because they weigh a lot less than turbodiesel engines. Ram’s 3500 dually regular-cab, long-box configuration with the 6.4-liter Hemi will haul 7,680 pounds, but we expect Ford to trump that figure by a feed bag or two when it rates its much larger 7.3-liter V-8 gasser. Ram’s fuel economy might be better, though, as its gas engine features cylinder deactivation.
Meh, my stuff is bulkier than it is heavy: The Chevy/GMC boxes are built differently so the floor and inner wall panels can be closer to the outer panels, making them wider inside. The 8-foot box boasts best-in-class volume of 83.5 cubic feet. CornerSteps in the bumper and BedSteps at the front sides of the bed ease loading the bed and securing loads, as well.
How adept are you at maneuvering a trailer?
I’m a total pro: Get the Ram to send the message that you don’t need all those sissy camera screens and trailer-aiming gizmos.
It’s been a long time since my last mailbox flattening: Go for Chevy, and load it up with the Advanced Trailering System, which comes with a slew of built-in cameras plus two you mount in and on the trailer. They combine to provide 15 useful views, and they can even make your trailer invisible for a clear rear-view.
I’m a total nervous greenhorn: Then Ford is the brand for you. You get most of the camera coverage offered by Chevy, plus Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which lets you twirl a knob to steer a reversing trailer—and it works with bumper or fifth-wheel/gooseneck hitches. Magic.
How heavy is your trailer?
35,100 pounds: Lucky you! You can enjoy the prettier styling, vastly nicer interiors, and 1,000-lb-ft torque of the Ram 3500 dually turbodiesel.
35,500 pounds: You’re going to need the Chevy 3500 turbodiesel dually, which might at least get slightly better fuel economy than the Ram, thanks to its 10-speed automatic, and which we are promised can put all 910 lb-ft to the ground in the low gears.
35,501 pounds*: Hang in there; Ford should announce its Super Duty max tow rating any day now, and smart money says it’ll be a number greater than those above.
Are you a label snob/name dropper?
The only label I care about on my truck is the one on the grille: Then go for the Ford. The Blue Oval gang is the only heavy-duty/commercial truck company that designs, tests, and builds all its very own powertrains (nowadays—it dumped Navistar almost a decade ago).
I trust the big names in long-haul/commercial trucking: If you’d really rather be driving a big rig, you might be happiest with the Cummins-powered Ram It’s the first truck to hit the magic torque number of 1,000 lb-ft, and the Cummins name is legend around the truck-stop pumps, but it’s now the only turbodiesel heavy with a six-speed automatic. Or go for Chevy/GMC to get some nice Allison Transmission logos. But understand that GM builds that 10-speed automatic and designed the geartrain and clutch architecture in conjunction with Ford.
How important is ride?
I demand a flying carpet: Then retire, sell your giant boat, fifth-wheel camper, horses, or race cars, and downshift to a four-wheel-air-suspension Ram
It’s pretty important: Try the Chevy/GMC, which is the only heavy-duty pickup with a fully independent control-arm and coil-spring front suspension. All brands feature hefty leaf springs in back, which are going to feel really stiff when unloaded. Opting for the rear air helper springs on the Ram might buy you a bit more unladen rear ride compliance.
My kidneys can take it: Go for the Ford.
How gadget-/connectivity-obsessed are you?
Beam me up, Scotty: A big-screen-equipped Ram is the obvious choice for the connection-obsessed, especially with the fun infotainment opportunities it brings, like SiriusXM programming you can pause and rewind.
I mostly need it for work: FordPass Connect technology is standard on all and features a 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 10 devices, and Ford offers fleet managers a suite of telematics and data services to help monitor driver behavior and optimize costs and fleet utilization.
Trailer connectivity is more important: Then you’re gonna love the way the myChevrolet app connects via Bluetooth with an RV trailer equipped with ASA Electronics’ iN-Command Control system. The app lets you control trailer functions like the generator and HVAC while monitoring the status of the water and waste tanks—all from your dash screen.
Will you be connecting a snowplow, dump bed, cherry picker, etc.?
Yep: Then you’ll be needing a power takeoff on the transmission. Ford offers factory-installed Live-Drive, which takes power off an upsized idler gear that powers the transmission’s oil pump. Chevy offers a beefier and reportedly quieter chain-driven PTO. Both operate at engine speed, not turbine or transmission input speed. Tie-breaker for snowplow folks: Chevy claims its front end will accept a snow plow without the need to drill into the bumper or otherwise permanently mar the appearance.
Oops, I mean yes but I already bought the Ram! Don’t fret. Ram claims its transmission can accept upfit PTOs on either side of the transmission—good news if there’s some reason your PTO needs to be on the opposite side of the factory ones. Ram is also the only one that can offer “fuel saver” mode, by operating the PTO in cylinder-deactivation mode when loads permit.

This Just In: Heavy Duty Hauling
Chevrolet has been building trucks for more than 100 years. The latest in that long heritage is the all-new 2020 Silverado HD.  MotorWeek was at the debut at the Flint Assembly plant in Flint, Michigan where they’ll be built. The Silverado 2500 & 3500 HD models are longer, wider and taller than the predecessor. These heavy duty trucks grow by more than just size.  The standard powertrain is a new 6.6-liter V-8 gas engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Horsepower increases 11 percent to 401… torque is up by 22 percent to 464 lb-ft.
Those numbers naturally grow with the Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo-Diesel V-8 producing 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. It works with an all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. There’s no waiting for all that torque, Chevy says its available in first gear. One more number that matters: maximum towing capability.  That increases too, by as much as 52-percent to 35,500 pounds. While it has the muscle to move a lot, there’s also technology to help. This Silverado HD has new towing technology, including 15 camera views available… so you clearly see what’s going on behind you.
The design takes a leap forward. It says heavy duty before it even goes to work. The job gets done in five trim levels from the Work Truck all the way up to the High Country. If you’re looking at one of these heavy duty trucks for a big project you’ll have to wait a few months. The all-new 2020 Silverado HD goes on sale this summer. We’ll know more about the price closer to when they go on sale.

The New Chevy Silverado HD Can Tow More than Your Truck Can
With a grille that would do a Mack truck proud and a claimed best-in-class towing capacity of up to 35,500 pounds, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty bowed at the plant in Flint, Michigan where it will be built. Like the rival Ram Heavy Duty and Ford Super Duty lines, the Silverado HD and its close sibling, the GMC Sierra HD, have targeted big numbers and best-in-class with a fervor usually reserved for Camaro vs. Mustang vs. Challenger, only here the profit margins and contribution to the corporate bottom line are exponentially larger and more important.
The Chevy Silverado HDs share virtually nothing in design or engineering with the Silverado 1500s, says General Motors president Mark Reuss. “[These customers] do not want a bigger light-duty. They want a truck scaled to their needs,” he said.
Reuss also acknowledged GM’s recent spate of layoffs as part of the company’s “tough decisions, right decisions” in shifting the automaker into the right direction for future success. Those layoffs make the timing of the big trucks’ introduction awkward, though Reuss said GM plans to add 1,000 jobs to this Flint Assembly plant, which has more than 3,000 hourly workers on three shifts.
HD and half-ton Silverados share no major parts and components beyond having the same roof panel, and together the heavy- and light-duty Chevrolets and GMCs account for 24 distinct models. (This does not include the midsize Colorado/Canyon or the new medium-duty trucks.) GM trucks have collectively been number one in industry sales, Reuss said, with more than 973,000 sold in 2018, a position it’s likely to lose with the return of the in-demand Ranger to Ford’s lineup.
While the half-ton full-size GM pickups adapted mixed-material construction for 2019 in order to cut weight, the HD Silverado sticks with all steel for its ladder frame and body. The taller grille and prominent, functional dual hood vents are intended to help cool the engine in diesel versions, said Rich Scheer, exterior design director for Chevrolet trucks. The HDs are wider and taller and the crew cab’s wheelbase is increased by 5.2 inches.
Scheer acknowledged negative reaction on social media to a preview of the Silverado HD’s visage, though the new, techy nose looks better in person than in photos.
Four of the five trim levels—Work Truck, Custom, LT, and LTZ—feature the CHEVROLET lettering across the horizontal grille bar, while the top-dog High Country replaces the lettering with a gold bowtie. The five trims are available on both the Chevy Silverado 2500 and the 3500 dually models.
Engine choices are an all-new 6.6-liter V-8 with what Chevy says is first in the HD segment with gas direct-injection. The iron small-block V-8 features a high-compression ratio, Chevy says, and makes 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, up from 360 and 380 for the previous gas V-8. It delivers power through a carryover six-speed automatic transmission.
The much more popular engine, the Silverado HD’s 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 diesel, is a heavily upgraded version of the outgoing rig’s. It now has a new 28-inch-diameter fan, up from 25, and its oil cooler has five extra plates for a total of 19. Engine-braking capacity is up 14 percent. While the Duramax’s 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque is unchanged, Chevy swipes at the Ram HD’s 1000-lb-ft Cummins diesel by bragging that its diesel can put down all its torque from launch, in first gear.
The Duramax is paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic, built by GM. Chevy says it was developed with Allison engineers and validated by the transmission maker, and is on architecture “similar” to the 10-speed automatic that Ford and GM developed together, and which comes with Ford’s freshly updated Super Duty F-series pickups. The transmission’s clutches and brakes are the same, but gear ratios are slightly different, according to Chevrolet. The new gearbox also features an integrated power take-off unit with chain drive, all for quieter operation.
A new Autotrac active two-speed transfer case on 4×4 Silverado HDs electronically controls the 4 Auto mode, for “seamless” shifting between rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive.
Every Chevy Silverado HD dually has a towing capacity of more than 30,000 pounds, up to the 35,500-pound maximum, which is a 52-percent increase over the outgoing model’s max. The Silverado 2500 with the gas-powered V-8 has a 17,400-pound towing capacity, up 18 percent.
Features on the HD Silverado’s new ladder frame include a one-piece, five-inch prop shaft in place of the old truck’s two-piece, 3.5-inch shaft, for better load distribution. The Silverado 3500 has a new 12-inch rear axle and 12-inch ring gear. The trucks carry over their double-wishbone front suspensions.
Being a new pickup truck, the ’20 Chevy Silverado HD features the latest advanced camera technology, with eight available cameras offering up to 15 different views. The digital cameras are hard-wired and high-definition, and include a rear side view with turn-signal activated biasing, and a “see-through” feature that allows the driver to virtually “look” through the trailer he or she is towing. The driver also can use the center screen to check tire pressures and temperatures on the trailer, as well as the truck, and can pre-condition a trailer home’s heating, air-conditioning and water heater.
Chevrolet claims the largest cargo volume in the truck’s segment, and the Silverado HDs come with a 120-volt outlet in the bed, a segment-first power up-and-down tailgate, and nine moveable and 12 fixed bed tiedowns. Advanced trailering features include a pre-departure checklist, customizable trailer profiles, and a smart trailer app. This is the first Silverado HD that doesn’t share its bed with the Silverado 1500.
Yes, these gargantuan trucks have all the modern features one could fit inside. Each Detroit competitor has its own list of best-in-class numbers, and it seems each will continue to leapfrog the others as long as there are companies to build them.
