The 48th annual Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance has been postponed until July 17, 2022, the organizing committee has announced. The event is held on the campus of Pacific University, which has become a coronavirus vaccination site.

Porsche’s 904 Living Legend Reimagined the Most Radical VW Ever
Imagine a 1.2-liter Ducati L-twin, screaming its desmodromic song just inches behind your head—spinning 11,000 rpm, pushing something like 200 horsepower, and propelling your beautiful little carbon-fiber Porsche, which weighs a hair under a ton, through space. It’s a minimalist’s fantasy, the notion of a sports car reliant on a lack of weight rather than an abundance of horsepower to achieve remarkable performance. That’s a large part of the spirit of Porsche, and it was distilled into the 2013 904 Living Legend Concept. The car was light, lithe, and striking.
For the first decade and a half of Porsche’s existence as a sports-car manufacturer, though, all of the company’s products fully embraced this philosophy. We think of Lotus as epitomizing the emphasis on weight reduction, but Porsche’s early reliance on small, low-output flat-four engines meant that its competition success hinged on ever-greater reductions in mass in the early 356 racers and later in cars like the famous 718 RSK. Another iconic model, the Porsche 904—a truly beautiful shape designed by Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, the founder’s grandson and father of the 911—inspired the Living Legend’s design.
It’s among the Porsche design projects that variously have been kept secret and/or provided low-key influence on future products. Porsche’s leadership has for years given its design team leeway to explore any number of avenues, even when they may not directly lead to a production vehicle. In this instance, Porsche was inspired by one of Volkswagen’s most fascinating vehicles of the mid-2010s: the XL Sport.
The XL Sport emerged as a derivative of the high-tech, extremely efficient XL1—a hybrid powered by a two-cylinder diesel engine that returned improbable fuel economy, offered up to 30 miles of pure electric range, and claimed a ridiculous 0.189 coefficient of drag that made it the most aerodynamic production car in history. VW called it a “lighthouse car” whose pioneering tech would filter to all brands.
The XL Sport version swapped out the diesel for a Ducati engine, the L-twin from the 1199 Superleggera—at the time, the world’s most powerful twin-cylinder engine, good for 197 horsepower and 99 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the carbon fiber used in the body, high-strength steel and magnesium alloy were applied where required for strength and weight reduction. Its zero-to-62-mph time was estimated at a modest 5.7 seconds, but the rawness and immediacy of the platform would likely make it more fun and engaging than the bare specs would suggest.
That’s where the 904 Living Legend Concept picks up the story. Porsche designers, intrigued by what Volkswagen was doing with this lightweight, compact platform, started designing around the XL1/XL Sport’s shape and architecture. The result, it’s claimed, wasn’t originally intended to resemble the 904—instead, the story goes, the resemblance simply appeared. Think of it as convergent evolution.
The 904 Living Legend’s elegance is remarkable, translating classically beautiful forms into a thoroughly modern overall design without falling into overly retro tropes. Perhaps the most overt throwback to the original 904 is the rear glass deeply inset into solid buttresses, although in the 904 Living Legend this is mitigated somewhat by the power bulges and engine cover/grille. There’s an intense and delightful taper to the cabin as it flows over and past the wide rear fenders.
Instead of an abrupt Kamm tail, the 904 Living Legend serves as a preview of how the company’s overall rear styling would evolve. Compare it to the Taycan or the 2020 911 with their razor-thin heckblende rear-end treatments. And the headlight shape—if not the internal arrangement of lenses and reflectors—looks like a number of contemporary Porsches, including the Panamera. There’s also a strong overall link with the 918, which was the 904 Living Legend’s contemporary.
The 904 Living Legend Concept never progressed beyond a 1:1-scale model, which was built in 2013. Like many recently revealed Porsche concepts, it didn’t progress to production but represents an articulation of many ideas that did, particularly stying elements and forms. As compelling an idea as the 904 is, the barriers to production would be myriad, among them the expense of its exotic architecture, perhaps serviceability/reliability of its unusual powertrain, the limited appeal of a Porsche offering modest performance. Its rawness and purity would have made for a uniquely rewarding and engaging driving experience, though—a compelling idea we’re glad Porsche explored, even if it came to naught.

And I personally believe AR is set to be the winner in this market, for a few reasons. First, augmented reality doesn’t require the user to wear a big, clunky headset. Nobody wants to wear that for hours; it’s uncomfortable if worn for long periods of time, and you have to take it off to do anything else. With the amount of time that people spend multitasking now, that won’t work. The only alternative right now is being in a “virtual reality booth.” While it looks interesting, people aren’t going to have these big spaces set aside in their homes. So the second reason VR won’t be as big is because selling to individual consumers is the only way that anything new in the gaming industry can get off the ground nowadays. Next, virtual reality right now is mostly limited to gaming. And gaming, especially with a big headset on, does not appeal to the majority of the general public. I do realize that VR gaming headsets are selling well. There is a place for them, and they will be part of the bigger digital reality picture. But I believe that AR will end up being the dominant force in this market. So what is augmented reality? Put in basic terms, it’s anything projected on a screen or display that isn’t really there. An example that everyone has seen is the yellow line during football games that marks the next first down. It’s actually been around since 1968, although it doesn’t look anything like it used to (thankfully). There was also Google Glass, which was Google’s own AR “headset” in the form of glasses. Shopping online is quicker and easier for browsing, too; you have hundreds of products right in front of you, and now you can see what they would look like in your home. Ikea has a similar app called Ikea Place. One of the most tedious parts of buying furniture is having to measure all of the dimensions and then trying to estimate if the piece of furniture that you want will fit. But with the app, you can see what any “actual size” piece of Ikea furniture would look like in your home. Augmented Reality Has Hundreds of Different Uses Augmented reality is also proving its worth to manufacturing companies. For example, Ford and Volvo are using AR in their automobile design process. Now, instead of having to build a physical clay model of every car, they can visualize it with augmented reality. This technology can save a lot of time and money that’s spent fixing mistakes and guessing how to create or improve an automobile’s functionality. Once this product is fully integrated, it will get rid of the entire prototype phase of automobile design, allowing manufacturers to roll out new models more often. We can already get a glimpse of what else is to come with AR, as there are hundreds of different uses being figured out and developed. Sticking with automotive uses, there’s an app being developed by a company called AR-media that lets you track maintenance and perform repairs on cars. The app is called I-Mechanic, and it could really save people a lot of money by showing them how to perform routine maintenance on their cars. Volkswagen actually was a pioneer with this technology when it created an app that could be used with its XL1 model. While it had the right idea with the technology, only 200 of those cars were ever sold to the public, so nobody could really use the app. I-Mechanic will be available to use with a variety of car models, building on what Volkswagen started. Lastly, believe it or not, there is a technology being developed to turn your windshield into an AR station: While a “smart windshield” may be a distraction for drivers, the real potential here would be with self-driving or assisted-driving cars. The person in the car could use the windshield for things like GPS or getting information on nearby points of interest. Investing in Augmented Reality Augmented reality has taken the tech market by storm over the past couple of years, and it’s only just starting. For all the apps and features that I’ve explained here, there are hundreds more in existence or development. There are also ways to invest in this technology. Companies like Snap Inc. (NYSE: SNAP) and Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) are creating augmented reality platforms that are being used every day by individuals and companies alike. In 2018, I believe we will see exponential growth in the augmented reality market, and a significant immersion of the technology into our daily lives.

McLaren is crowning a new king of its top-speed hill: Meet the Speedtail. Capable of reaching 250 miles per hour (402 kilometers per hour), the nearly $2,240,000 (€1,970,000) model marks a new era for the British automaker.
Serving as an informal successor to the McLaren F1 of the 1990s, the Speedtail aims to challenge vehicles such as the Bugatti Chiron. Whereas the 1,500-horsepower (1,119 kilowatts) Bugatti relies on brute force to achieve breathtaking dynamics, the McLaren uses aerodynamic ingenuity to push the performance needle to new heights.

Looking like a Volkswagen XL1 on steroids, the Speedtail’s carbon-fiber bodywork is seemingly designed to slice through the air with minimal effort. Although its teardrop shape is a strong base for achieving aerodynamic alacrity, the Speedtail’s smaller details are what truly help it stand out as an engineering tour de force. For instance, the front wheels wear static wheel covers that help channel air into the car’s various vents.
Likewise, the Speedtail trades traditional rearview mirrors for a pair of retractable cameras, the feeds of which are displayed within the cabin. A speed-oriented “Velocity” mode stows the cameras within the doors and lowers the car by 1.4 inches (35 millimeters) to further improve aerodynamics.

Speedtail-specific Pirelli P-Zero tires ensure the mighty McLaren stays stuck to the ground in all sorts of dynamic driving.
Like the McLaren F1 of yore, the Speedtail places its driver in the center of its teardrop-shaped cabin. A pair of passenger seats sit left and right of the captain’s chair, while specific luggage compartments have been carved into the nose and tail of the car (Speedtail owners can purchase bespoke luggage to fit their hypercar).
The Speedtail’s cabin is as opulent as its seven-figure price tag suggests. Touchscreens surround the three-spoke steering wheel, while buttons for controlling features such as the windows and the vehicle’s active dynamics are located on a panel overhead. Electrochromic glass allows those within the Speedtail to control the amount of light that makes its way into the cabin. (The glass also makes its way to the top of the windshield, where it’s used in lieu of traditional sun visors.)
The McLaren Speedtail is the real deal: it offers ludicrous performance, state-of-the-art technology, and a curb appeal unlike anything else sold today. Too bad McLaren is only making 106 Speedtails, all of which are claimed. Those lucky enough to make the Speedtail list can look for deliveries of the model to begin in early 2020.
