2020 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn 4X4 6'4 Box Mega Cab Full Specs
Of all the modern brands, Ram has worked hard to establish itself as a leading truck brand. Ambiguity has increased the Ram 1500 in recent years, but has the Ram 2500 followed suit? The Ram 2500 has built on its younger sister's success and followed suit, offering refreshed styling, quality transmission parts, and well-planned trim levels that are more personal than just a set of features. The 2020 Ram 2500 comes in 6 trim levels, enough to leave plenty of options without overwhelming buyers.
The 2020 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn 4X4 6’4 Box Mega Cab is a beast on the streets in terms of performance. Its performance characteristics attract many drivers with big plans for their next vehicle, and the RAM won't let anyone down.
Read below for quick highlights and available features for the 2020 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn trim.
Engine And Performance
2020 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn Mega Cab is equipped with a Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine. This engine has best-in-class 370hp @ 2,800RPM, and it has 850 lb.-ft. @ 1,700RPM. It's matched with a six-speed automatic transmission for smooth displacement, and the truck is capable of towing 17,540 lbs. The payload capacity is 4,000 pounds.
Interior Features
Bucket seats are an option on the other trims, but they are standard on the Laramie Longhorn. This simple change makes the cabin more elegant and can improve seating comfort levels. What is impressive about Laramie Longhorn is that not only the front seats are heated, but the second-row seats are also heated. These front seats are ventilated to cool the seats during the summer months rapidly. Traditional leather is replaced with premium Figgieri leather in the Laramie Longhorn.
Laramie Longhorn has several unique interior accents that make it stand out. There are several differences in the cabin. The Ram 2500 features luxury front and rear floor mats with the Laramie Longhorn, rather than the standard floor mats. It has a universal garage door opener, and wireless charging is convenient.
Exterior Features
Laramie Longhorn has some exterior features that Laramie doesn't have. For example, automatic high beam, bi-LED projector headlights, and LED bed lighting are standard on this version. The external mirror has a memory feature so you can quickly snap it into place, and the windshield wiper will detect rain and turn it on automatically when needed. Also, Laramie Longhorn comes standard with a durable spray-in bed liner. The chrome belt molding gives the Laramie longhorn a little sparkle, like a polished aluminum silver pocket wheel.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The more advanced 8.4-inch touchscreen is standard on this version. An upgrade that many will appreciate in the Laramie Longhorn is the addition of GPS navigation. This provides users with detailed instructions on a wide variety of destinations.
With SiriusXM Traffic Plus and Travel Link, one can get up-to-date information on traffic and road conditions. However, Laramie Longhorn can upgrade to a navigation system with Uconnect 4C technology and a 12-inch screen, a CD player and HD radio are other enhancements that will become standard on the 2020 2500 Laramie Longhorn.
Safety Features
To enhance safety features on this trim, it adds four-wheel disc brakes, ABS brakes, Adjustable head restraints: driver and passenger w/tilt, Brake assist, Dual front impact airbags, Dual front side impact airbags, Electronic stability, Ignition disable, Occupant sensing airbag, Overhead airbag, Panic alarm, Perimeter/approach lights, Security system, and Traction control.
To learn more about the different trims levels, visit the leading Brazoria Ram dealers – Reliance Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram at Bay City, TX. Their team will show you more differences between different trim levels to guide you to the right truck for your heavy needs.

Pickup Trucks Getting Huge. Got Problem With That?
A FEW MONTHS ago, on an ordinary day in an unremarkable
Costco
parking lot, I was nearly squashed by an unusually large pickup. Thank God I was wearing a mask.
As that chrome grille closed on me like a man-eating Norelco shaver, time slowed. It seemed I was watching myself from afar, being nimble for a man my age, darting from the path of a towering, limousine-black pickup with temporary plates, whose driver barely checked his pace. Jerk.
What the hell was that thing? A 2020 GMC Sierra HD Denali? It was huge! The domed hood was at forehead level. The paramedics would have had to extract me from the grille with a spray hose, like Randall Jarrell’s ball-turret gunner.
He didn’t even see me.
Later, returning to my car, I noticed something: The parking lot was dotted with similarly enormous luxury pickups—many new, many taking up two spaces: Ram,
Ford,
Chevy, GMC. They stood out like Percherons in a herd of Shetland ponies.
“ Are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? Both. The average pickup gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019. ”
What is going on here? When did pickups get so big? And why are XL-sized pickups so big now?
I know. Pickup trucks at Costco. Film at 11. Except that in April, U.S. sales of pickups surpassed automobiles for the first time ever—about 112 years, give or take. Trucks and truck-based sport-utilities now account for roughly 70% of new vehicles sold in the U.S.
How we came to be Pickup Nation is a longer story (cheap gas, the Chicken Tax, IRS Section 179, marketing). But this year, to help move the tin during the pandemic, U.S. auto makers laid out a bounty of discounts and cheap financing, including 0% interest for 84 months and deferred-payment plans.
“Pickups without a doubt benefited from the great deals,” said Mark Schirmer, spokesperson for market service providers Cox Automotive. “And the deals were particularly great for consumers buying expensive vehicles.” The data suggest these incentives also juiced a boomlet in XL-sized, heavy-duty pickups, otherwise known as ¾-ton and 1-ton pickups, for private use.
That’s right: Gucci cowboys. Historically aimed at commercial customers, sole proprietors, horse-haulers and mega-RVers, heavy-duty pickups are stronger and taller than ordinary (half-ton) trucks, with cabs mounted high above reinforced frame rails and heavy, long-travel suspensions. But HD trucks have evolved in the past decade, irradiated with the same prestige-luxury rays as light-duty trucks.
Behold MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year, the Ram Heavy-Duty. In Limited trim (about $65,000 with four-wheel drive but before options) the 2500 HD sports an elaborate chromified grille that gleams like a tea service. Its flight deck glows with untrucky amenities such as acoustically insulated glass; active noise canceling; 12-inch center touch screen; wood trim, premium leather—all paired with a maximum 19,680-pound towing capacity. With the optional cab lights, it measures over 6-feet-9 inches tall.
Thus has been born a uniquely American vehicle type: the mega-luxury mega-pickup.
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
The dimensions of Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ. Just how big?
Photo: Chevrolet
81.85 in. wide
79.82 in. tall
249.95 in. long
It seems to be resonating. While sales of Silverado light-duty were off 18.6% in the second quarter, sales of the HD model sales were off less than a point. GMC’s light-duty Sierra was down 9.5%, while sales of our menacing new friend, the Sierra HD, were up 7.6% in the second quarter and 21.5% year-to-date.
Ford and
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
don’t break out HD sales from pickups overall. However, Ram’s average transaction price in the second quarter soared above $50,000, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of data from Kelley Blue Book. Ford F-Series sales fell 23% (to 180,825 units) but its ATP was mostly unaffected—$51,688, the highest among pickups.
In July, J.D. Power declared Sierra HD the king of the bro-dozers, placing it first in its 2020 U.S. APEAL Study of Large Heavy-Duty Pickups, which tracks owners’ excitement and emotional attachment in the first 90 days.
“The front end was always the focal point,” GM designer Karan Moorjani told Muscle Cars & Trucks e-zine. “We spent a lot of time making sure that when you stand in front of this thing it looks like it’s going to come get you.”
Mission accomplished.
But are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? The answers are somewhat and definitely. The average pickup on the road gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and 730 pounds since 2000.
“One of the most significant changes in that time was the arrival of crew-cab configurations, which added cab space to make them more family and work friendly,” said Mike Levine, Ford spokesperson.
In 2011, a change in the way the feds calculate vehicle fuel economy (the so-called “footprint rule”) gave domestic truck makers incentive to go big. Ever since, GMC, Chevy, Ram and Ford have been locked in a competitive feedback loop chasing best-in-class attributes and capacities—the “towing/hauling” wars. For MY 2019, for example, Ram’s 1500 Crew Cab gained 3.9 inches in overall length over a 4.1-inch longer wheelbase. In the same model-year, the Chevy Silverado gained 1.7 inches in length on a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase.
As a result, new light-duty pickup dimensions are approaching those of heavy-duty pickups. While the 2021 F-150 is about 18 inches shorter than the equivalent F-250, it is the same width (79.9). Mr. Levine noted that the company has gone to a common-cab design, using the same four-door living quarters for both light- and heavy-duty models.
“ ‘The face of these trucks is where the action is, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.’ ”
Ask any kid with a crayon. If you draw the box in the middle bigger, you have to make the ones on the end bigger, too.
Which brings us to the 2020 Silverado HD—10 inches longer, 1.8 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the previous model. The big Chevy’s challenging kisser comprises a thick, knee-high bumper; a central grille opening; several sets of lighting assemblies; a full-width transverse element helpfully informing with the message CHEVROLET…and then, above that, between very square corners, is a whole other layer, then a peaked hood with a central inlet. This hood line meets the base of the windshield about 6 inches above the side window sill.
Another cause of facial swelling? Marketing. “Full-size pickups are generally identical in profile,” Mr. Schirmer said. “The face of these trucks is where the action is; a Ford has to say Ford from head on, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.”
You don’t have to be Steven Pinker to see that truck designers are leaning into the bully with these lantern-jawed bumpers and walls of chrome. Detroit’s blithe codifications of purposeful and powerful pickup design fail to describe the intimidation factor from the outside.
“A few brands, Ram and Ford, have taken to an overscale brand identity [and] applied it onto the grille,” said Kimberly Marte, associate professor of design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. “The Chevy team did benchmarking of new models and followed the trend.”
It’s not clear how long pickup designs can keep getting their chrome on. In 2018 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study examining the connection between SUV design and pedestrian fatalities. In a separate study released in June, IIHS found fatal single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs striking pedestrians increased 81% from 2009 to 2016.
While IIHS studied SUVs and not pickups, “The key is the geometry of the front end, the high and flat shape,” said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer for IIHS. “It’s like hitting a wall.”
XL-pickups’ high-rising hoods also create significant blind spots just ahead of the vehicle. I know because apparently I was in one of them. While truck makers like Ford offer automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection systems as standard equipment on most trims, and forward-view cameras as an option, such systems are not mandatory, as they would be in Europe.
NHTSA proposed that new pedestrian-safety tests for SUVs and trucks be included in the New Car Assessment Program in 2015. But as of this writing, the agency had not issued guidance on new standards. When asked, the industry trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation had no comment.
And what if the next administration should issue pickup-pedestrian safety rules? Could the extra tall hoods and bluff grilles, the sightlines, the scale, the very form language of the traditional American pickup ever be made pedestrian safe? “Of course not,” said Ms. Marte. “No way.”
So watch yourself at Costco.
TOO BIG FOR ITS BRITCHES?
Sizing up Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500HD
Photo: Chevrolet
HIGH-END HOOD: Modern pickups like the Silverado 2500 HD LT with Z71 Off-Road Package appear huge not just because roofs have gotten taller (topping out around 80 inches), but because hoods have grown relative to a truck’s overall height.
KING-SIZE BED: The 2020 Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab with Standard Bed is 10.3 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the 2019 model.
GAUDY GRILLE: The vast chrome rictus of Chevy’s Silverado has been coolly received by some critics and customers. But Silverado sales are up, and there’s a booming business in aftermarket grilles.
A STEP UP: To assist you in boarding its very tall seat—which maintains proportionality with the height of the hood, the 2021 Silverado HD High Country is available with power running boards that automatically slide out to meet you.

MORE SWANK, LESS SCHLEP
How Ford’s uber-popular F-150 pickup has changed shape and style since 1995
PICKUPS AND SUVS have become the vehicles of choice for U.S. drivers over the last 25 years. Along the way, they’ve also become less trucklike, emphasizing comfort as well as capability. Take the F-150, the flagship of Ford’s F-Series, America’s bestselling vehicles 43 years running, which has morphed from rural work truck into a daily-driving people-mover as suburbanites ditched minivans in droves. The bestselling F-150 of 1995 was a rigid two-door set with a 6.5-foot bed; today’s bestselling F-150 has four doors, copious creature comforts, and a cargo box that’s a full foot shorter. —Aaron Stern

2020 Ram 2500
2020 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 Heavy Duty are more luxurious, bigger and more capable than ever, and set a new bar for the HD pickup class. The truck family has an overall rating of 6.5 out of 10 for its combination of massive capabilities, premium features and quiet comfort, even though safety and fuel consumption are not officially measured. There is a Ram Heavy Duty for all buyers, available in six finishes, three body styles, two chassis setups, single or dual rear axles, two bed lengths, three engines, and two power-trains. equipped ships.

For 2020, the Ram HD gets a Night Edition that features darkened style elements such as 20-inch wheels. Active track control is now available at all finishes as well as blind spot monitors, and a new tire pressure monitoring system for trailers is included. There are also two new paint colors, and a 50-liter fuel tank is now standard on models of the longer-legged 8-foot cabin.
2020 Ram 2500 Design
The 2020 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty smooth its big-rig look with better results than the smaller 1500. It’s the right balance of muscle and sophistication in the right trim. Almost every finish of the Ram Heavy Duty looks like a completely different track, from the plastic-and-steel-finished Dealer to the chrome-heavy Limited model. The venerable Power Wagon takes style art from the less capable Rebel 1500, with its large plastic grille, upholstery and two-tone paint.
2020 Dodge RAM 2500 Power Wagon
Inside, the big Ram HD is almost indistinguishable from the smaller 1500, which is a wonderful thing. It’s our favorite truck interior and offers an expensive view at the top of the range, including semi-aniline leather and real wood and metal accents. There are plenty of buttons and buttons for different functions, no matter which touch screen you choose, but technophobes want the massive 12.0-inch screen that works with gloves.
2020 Ram 2500 Interior
In the cabin, the active noise cancellation and sound-proofing material creates a quieter atmosphere, even at full acceleration and with great trailer views. Even in basic craftsmanship, the Ram impresses in terms of fit and finish, and the leading Laramie Longhorn and Limited models feature fine materials such as semi-aniline leather, real wood and real metal accents that do not look in a luxury car.
In terms of bed access, Ram offers a deployable staircase mounted behind the truck, which swings out, but it’s not nearly as useful or innovative as competing model solutions. LED lighting, a spray lining and the branded Rambox suspension system make the bed more usable if you at least have access to it.
2020 Ram 2500 Engine
By default, the Ram HD gets a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 with 410 horsepower and 429 pounds of torque. With the cylinder deactivated, this large power plant can shut down four cylinders under light loads to save fuel. Rear-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional, and all gas-powered Ram HDs come with a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. Buyers have the option of choosing two different Cummins 6.7-liter turbo diesel inline 6 engines, the less powerful being the 370 hp and 850 pounds of torque. It’s a serious grunt, but an upgraded engine pushes the numbers up to 400hp and a full 1,000 pounds. Both liters of diesel use 6-speed automatic transmissions, the more powerful engine gets a butter gearbox.
2020 Ram 2500 Safety
The Ram Heavy Duty range in 2020 is not judged for crash tests, but does offer some active safety features as options. With six airbags, stability control, fixed-grip control, anti-lock brakes and a rear-view camera as standard, the Ram HD series doesn’t push the envelope in terms of safety technology. Desirable passive and active safety features such as a load and surrounding camera system, blind spot monitors, forward collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, parking sensors and active lane control are all available throughout the range or top cutout exclusively.

2019 Ram HD First Test: How 1,000 LB-FT Performs at the Track
“Hey, man,” the Ram PR dude said to me. “Would you mind starting out in the Hemi 2500 Tradesman?” No, dude, I silently thought to myself. I did not drive 47 miles to spend the night at the Four Seasons Westlake Village only to drive some dirty old gasoline-powered Ram HD with only—only —429 lb-ft of torque.
No, sir! I made the sacrifice to stay in a five-star hotel away from my sleep-averse toddler only to play with the big dog, to experience the main event, to drive the Ram with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six with—are we all sitting down—1,000 lb-ft of torque! A Hemi 2500? Come on! “Sure,” I said, knuckling under to petty authority. “That’s fine.”
The shocking part is, said Hemi-powered truck is much better than fine. I remember back at the 2017 Truck of the Year competition, Ram lent us a gasoline-powered 2500. Hated it! Hated it to the point that I questioned why anybody would ever buy a gas-powered heavy-duty.
Well, let me announce that the 2019 Ram 2500 Hemi answers that question. Because it’s terrific. Same engine, in fact, so the question is, why is the 2019 version so much better? Gearing. The new version is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission (the 2017 model had a six-speed automatic), and that alone basically solves every issue I had with the last gen. Suddenly, the low-spec Ram HD feels quick, sporty, and swarming with torque. Even though the job-site-white, crank-window(!) Tradesman had 2,500 pounds of lumber in the bed, the thing still felt fleet and darty. Sure, any truck is going to ride better with weight in the bed, so yes, Ram PR totally tricked me.
However, if you actually use your truck to move stuff around, the 2500 Tradesman is a great, low-dollar, high-capability alternative to a half-tonner. Ram hasn’t announced pricing yet, but I’d guess you’ll be able to slide into the Tradesman’s vinyl-skinned interior for about $35,000 with no options whatsoever, just like the example I drove.
On the other end of the pricing spectrum sits the full-fat, 3500 Mega Cab dually with the aforementioned optional 1,000-lb-ft engine, in either Laramie Longhorn or Limited trim with the Max Tow package—which can set you back over $90,000.
What if you want the capability of a big, strong diesel powerplant, but the notion of a near-six-figure truck leaves you cold? Don’t worry. For $9,100 over the base gas engine, you can opt for a 370-horsepower, 850-lb-ft version of the Cummins. Jumping from 850 to 1,000 lb-ft—which requires a different transmission and transfer case—costs another $2,695. Still, you can buy a very capable Ram heavy-duty hauler for well under 50 large. How capable?
I got behind the wheel of a 3500 Limited dually with its 850 lb-ft of torque and a large, enclosed box trailer hanging off the gooseneck. All the trucks present had little white placards inside announcing both the trailer weight and the weight of what was on/in said trailer. All the trucks save for the Delmonico Red bruiser I was sitting in. Some other journo swiped it. I’ll ask the PR guy later, I told myself.
Even though 850 lb-ft of twist is weirdly a “normal” amount of torque these days, the trailer felt very light. “Maybe it’s empty?” my passenger mused. Yeah, maybe. The two of us guessed that the unladen trailer weighed 2, maybe 3 tons, max. We made this assumption because the ride quality wasn’t all that great. As stated earlier, heavy-duty trucks tend to ride much better when under a heavy load. Imagine our stunned shock to discover the trailer was full of bags of rocks; thus we’d been hauling 16,580 pounds. As for the ride quality, I’m thinking the Max Tow package solves that problem. Why am I thinking that?
Finally it was time to climb into the truck I’d come to drive, a 3500 Limited dually with the Max Tow package plus the 400-hp, 1,000-lb-ft king Cummins. As it happened, this particular truck was hooked up to an 8,440-pound trailer with a 9,100-pound skid-steer strapped to it (total: 17,540 pounds). Heavy, yes, but the crazy part is that 17,540 pounds is less than half of the truck’s capability. That’s right, this rig is capable of hauling 35,100 pounds.
(An aside: Sadly for Ram, Chevy just announced that its heavy hauler can handle 35,500 pounds. Meanwhile, Ford’s new thing is to announce numbers without actually revealing the numbers—such as saying the GT500 will be 700-plus horsepower. So, Ford’s 7.3-liter V-8 will have some sort of output—but you can rest assured that the 2020 Super Duty’s max tow rating will be at least 35,501 pounds.)
Up the Grapevine we went. Although it’s not quite the legendary Davis Dam towing test we employ as part of our Truck of the Year festivities, the California Grapevine up through and past Gorman is quite mountainous. The big Ram got itself up to 50 mph on a flat section of freeway, no problem whatsoever. I waited for the uphill and then punched it. As it turns out, knowing you have four-digit torque at your disposal and experiencing said tidal wave of force are two radically different things. I knew this truck wouldn’t sweat the load, but I wasn’t prepared for how effortless it would feel. To my astonishment, I watched as the 3500 HD accelerated up to 65 mph as easily as an unladen passenger car would perform the same act.
Going downhill was as easy. Ram includes an automatic exhaust brake that acts as a sort of smart descent control. After double-tapping the exhaust brake switch twice, all you do is ever so lightly drag the brake pedal to hold your current speed. Touch the throttle to override it. Simple. Also worth noting, with the Max Tow package, the rear brake rotors are larger (14.4 inches) than the fronts (14.2 inches). Why? The rear brakes of the truck act as the front brakes of the trailer. Think about it. Clever, no?
After turning around to head back to base camp, I found myself stuck behind a motorhome struggling to go 25 mph up the hill. During Truck of the Year, testing director Kim Reynolds calls this the Frustration Test, and it has become a staple of our Truck of the Year testing (though we test accelerating from 35 to 55 mph). I pulled out to the left and floored it as we passed Tejon Ranch on the way up to Frazier Park.
I checked my rearview display, and, yup, cars were bearing down on me and the giant Ram. I didn’t know it at the time, but the 3500 Limited I was driving weighs 9,060 pounds empty. Counting the trailer and at least 800 pounds of passengers (including Ram HD chief engineer Rod Romain, who has a 1,000-lb-ft handshake), we’re talking more than 27,000 pounds that needed to get from 25 to 65 mph uphill in a big hurry. Moment of truth, as they say.
In our standard testing, this big Ram hits 60 mph in 8.4 seconds and runs the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds at 84.9 mph. On paper, these numbers sound like nothing. Back to knowing versus experiencing, this big ol’ hoss feels much quicker than our instrumented numbers say.
There’s this Bentleyness (for lack of a better word) to this sensation—that the tsunami of torque you’re surfing will never crest, will never cease, will never relent. The times on paper aren’t quick by modern standards, but by the seat of your pants, this engine in the Ram feels invincible. Also, this 4.5-ton monster truck rides remarkably well completely empty. As for the Frustration Test, I ask, “What frustration?” We passed that slow-moving motorhome without breaking a sweat.

Specs Check: 2019 Ram HD vs. 2020 GMC Sierra HD vs. 2019 Ford Super Duty
Given that torque figures on American heavy-duty trucks have steadily crept upward over the past few years, it was only a matter of time before someone hit that big four-digit mark. Ram was the first to cross that threshold with its 2019 Ram HD unveiled at the 2019 Detroit auto show with 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 GMC Sierra HD was also just revealed, and its top engine makes more horsepower but less torque than the Ram. However, it takes more than just torque numbers to win over heavy-duty truck buyers. Below, we compare specs of Ram’s redesigned HD truck against the competition from GM and Ford. Let’s see what the numbers say.
Power
The 2019 Ram 3500 HD’s class-leading 1,000 lb-ft is specific to the high-output version, which also makes 400 hp and comes backed by a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The standard version of Ram’s updated Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 pumps out 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. For 2020, GM’s Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 will continue to make 910 lb-ft but will use a new Allison 10-speed automatic. Although full specs haven’t been revealed yet, the Duramax in the 2020 Silverado HD will likely make the same 445 hp as the Sierra HD. Ford will be refreshing its Super Duty lineup for 2020 and will probably increase power, but if not, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 will continue to churn out 450 hp and 935 lb-ft. The current TorqShift six-speed automatic is expected to be replaced by a 10-speed unit.
If oil-burners aren’t for you, each automaker offers a gasoline option. The Ram’s 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 makes 410 hp and 429 lb-ft. GM will introduce an all-new gas engine, possibly a Navistar-sourced 6.6-liter V-8, which should eclipse the 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of the current 6.0-liter Vortec V-8. The Super Duty’s 6.2-liter V-8 produces 430 lb-ft, and horsepower is rated at 385. A power bump could happen if the engine is updated for 2020.
Towing and Hauling
That 1,000 lb-ft of twist is not just for show, as the 2019 Ram HD claims a class-leading maximum towing capacity of 35,100 pounds with a gooseneck or fifth wheel. Although “class-leading” is technically true, it just barely beats the Super Duty’s 35,000-pound maximum rating. Towing figures for the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD have yet to be released, but GM claims the maximum capacity will be “well in excess of 30,000 pounds.” When it comes to hauling, the Ram HD can carry a maximum payload of 7,680 pounds in its bed, a smidge more than Ford’s rating of 7,640 pounds. Currently, the Silverado’s max is 7,153 pounds (6,112 for the Sierra), but expect an improvement for 2020. Interestingly, those max payload numbers all apply to gas-engine variants. (The heavier diesel engines lower each rating slightly.)
The EPA doesn’t rate heavy-duty trucks for their fuel economy, but the size of the fuel tank will give you an idea of each truck’s driving range. The Ford Super Duty’s fuel tank capacity depends on the engine and configuration. The Power Stroke’s tank ranges from 29 gallons in the shortest wheelbase to 34 gallons for the mid-wheelbase models and 48 gallons in the model with the longest wheelbase (crew cab with the long bed). The gas engine’s tank is either 34 gallons for the regular and super cabs or 48 gallons for the crew cab.
The 2019 Ram HD gets a 28-gallon tank standard in regular-cab diesel trim or a 31-gallon tank in crew-cab and Mega Cab configurations with the 6-foot, 4-inch bed. Regular-cab and crew-cab models with the 8-foot box get a 32-gallon tank standard. All of GM’s current HD trucks have a 36-gallon tank, regardless of engine and body configuration, though that could change for the 2020 models. Interestingly, those max payload numbers all apply to gas-engine variants (the heavier diesel engines lower each rating slightly).
Bed Dimensions
We know how much weight these trucks can haul in the bed, but how much stuff can you fit in them? The Ram HD’s standard bed is 76.3 inches long and can hold 57.5 cubic feet of cargo. The long bed measures 98.3 inches long and has a volume of 74.7 cubic feet. Both beds have 51 inches between wheelhouses. GM’s standard bed on the outgoing HD truck is 78.9 inches in length, and the cargo volume is 61 cubic feet. Long-bed length is 97.8 inches, and cargo volume is 76.3 cubic feet. Width between wheelhouses is also 51.0 inches. Bed dimensions for the 2020 models have not been released yet, but GMC promises “class-leading heavy-duty cargo bed volume” in the Sierra HD.
The Super Duty’s standard bed is the largest at 81.9 inches long with a cargo volume of 65.4 cubic feet. Its long bed is just shy of the Ram’s at 98.1 inches long, but cargo volume is the largest at 78.5 cubic feet. Both beds have 50.5 inches between wheelhouses.
Acceleration
It’s almost impossible to say which HD lineup is the quickest with the various body, bed, axle ratio, and engine configurations offered. But to give you an idea, here are three that we tested. Our former long-term 2017 Ford F-250 King Ranch diesel 4×4 hit 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 15.5 seconds at 89 mph. The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Z71 diesel 4×4 made it to 60 in 6.5 seconds, on its way to a quarter-mile time of 15 seconds at 91.8 mph. We didn’t get our hands on a 2500 diesel model, but the previous-gen 2016 Ram 3500 Limited diesel 4X4 clocked a 0–60 time of 8.6 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 16.6 seconds at 84.0 mph. But expect the new Ram’s numbers to improve with the added power (our tester had 385 hp and 900 lb-ft).
