2020 Hyundai Venue sketched

All-new sub-compact SUV previewed with designer drawings ahead of its New York debut, showing a more mature design compared to the Kona.

Hyundai has offered an early look at the final design of its upcoming Venue compact crossover, ahead of its full reveal at the New York motor show on April 17.

Following the leaked images of a pre-production car last week, the sketches show a fairly muscular take on the new model, which clearly draws design inspiration from the larger Santa Fe and Palisade.

Compared to the Kona, the Venue will be a little sleeker, doing without the array of black plastic cladding that’s meant to mimic the look of kneepads. We can also see a sharp crease that runs from the bonnet line through to the tail-lights, as well as character lines connecting the front and rear arches.

Up front the Venue features a version of Hyundai’s signature ‘Cascading’ grille, while the two-tier headlight and LED daytime-running light arrangement is common to the Kona, Santa Fe and Palisade.

Inside, the Venue will be a little more conventional, adopting a very minimalistic layout that does away with swathes of buttons and dials.

Sitting atop the dashboard is a large, tablet-style infotainment display, though about 3/4 is integrated into the fascia. Below that is a strip of switches flanked by two rotary dials, while a further three circular dials are positioned further down, no doubt being the controls for the air-conditioning system.

It’s also rather reminiscent of the related Kia Stonic’s interior (above), albeit with some minor differing details.

“From everyday workplace activities to weekend fun, Venue is a great fit in accommodating busy lifestyles with an abundance of playful and practical features including seamless safety, versatility and connectivity,” Hyundai says in its press release.

Available engines are expected to include a range of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units depending on market, with manual, automatic and dual-clutch transmissions offered depending on powertrain.

Australia

Following its debut at the New York motor show on April 17, the Hyundai Venue is slated for an Australian launch during the second half of 2019, according to the brand’s local division.

More specific timing will likely be announced in the coming months, as will pricing and specifications in the lead-up to the local launch.

In saying that, it’s expected the Venue will kick off at a smidgen under $20,000 in an effort to fill the void that will be left by the ageing Accent hatchback and sedan when remaining stock depletes towards the end of the year, giving it a healthy gap from the slightly larger Kona, which starts at $23,500 before on-roads.
