Honda Civic tem versão esportiva com motor 1.0 Turbo no Reino Unido

Desde quando alguns se assustaram com o Ford Mondeo EcoBoost 1.0, a Europa vem revelando cada vez mais carros com pequenos propulsores de três cilindros e apenas um litro, mas sempre com turbocompressor e injeção direta. Aqui, os modelos médios ainda não ousam tanto, mas por lá, a coisa chega em um nível acima, como o citado acima.

Não se trata agora de um Ford, mas do Honda Civic Sport Line 2020, que tem um visual inspirado no esportivo Type R, mas com a metade do tamanho do propulsor dele e custando £ 25.510 ou cerca de R$ 138.945.

No caso, um 1.0 Turbo de três cilindros com 126 cavalos e 20,4 kgfm, que deve chegar aqui a bordo dos Novos Fit e City. Pense como seria um Golf GTI 1.0 TSI… Então, no caso da marca japonesa, acrescenta-se o visual do Golf R.

Bem estiloso, o Honda Civic Sport Line utiliza a mesma carroceria hatchback do Type R. Ele vem com grade em preto brilhante, para-choque esportivo com molduras pretas e spoiler bem pronunciado.

Este se conecta às saias laterais e spoiler traseiro, como no Type R. Com frente invocada, o Civic Sport Line tem traseira de meter medo, com para-choque bem expressivo e dotado de molduras laterais esportivas, bem como difusor de ar bem destacado.

Sobre a tampa do bagageiro, um aerofólio dá asas ao hatch médio, que ainda possui dois apêndices aerodinâmicos sobre a vigia traseira. Toyota’s Sexy Corolla XSE Hatchback

I’ve crisscrossed this continent several times and each time it was with a compact sedan. While it may seem romantic to hit Route 66 in a vintage ’58 Vette or cruise down Bourbon Street in a ‘63 Cadillac, financially there’s nothing more rewarding than racking up the miles in a miserly four cylinder. If it happens to be good looking, all the better.

A sexy Corolla? No I haven’t fallen off my rocker and hit my head and once you see the pics below I’m sure you’ll agree with me that this time Toyota’s designers have hit it out of the ball park, right down to my tester’s cool color. 

It got me thinking about the last time I called a Corolla sexy. Two words that don’t really go hand in hand. The last time I took a double take on a Corolla would have to be back in the mid eighties with the GT.

Fast-forward over three decades later and I find myself behind the wheel of a Blue Flame Corolla, the color reminiscent of the French Racing Blue hue of pre war racing Bugattis.

The XSE is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform that it shares with the 2020 Corolla sedan and hybrid, albeit with a sport-tuned suspension.  Power is supplied by an all-new 2.0L inline four cylinder that donates 168 horses and 151 lb-ft of torque delivered to the front wheels.

“This ought to get some looks.” I whisper to myself as I slide into the driver’s seat. Hmm, two pedals, not three! Sadly there’s no shifter for a manual tranny, instead I’m relegated to the numbness of a continuously variable automatic.

But wait, surprise, surprise, after just a few stoplights I’m starting to like the way engine and transmission connect. Acceleration is above average for a Corolla and it turns out this CVT has a catch, there’s an actual physical, toothed first gear for the car’s low range take off. From there, the belts and cones of the CVT take over, and Toyota has simulated ten speeds when you hit the paddle shifters. Ten? The paddle shifters do make the CVT more enjoyable adding to the hatch’s persona.

Starting at $23,124 for the base model with a six speed manual or $24, 124 for the CVT equipped hatch. Three trim levels quickly push the price up with my tester topping off at $30,124.

In a price sensitive segment, I wouldn’t say Toyota has gone all out in giving us the most bang for the buck, restraint would be more apt to describe the interior.

The XSE comes with heated fabric and vinyl covered buckets with an eight-way power adjustment for the driver. The front is where you want to be. Narrow opening rear doors make entry to the back seat no easy task for those of us with long legs. Unlike the outgoing Corolla sedan, which has extraordinary rear legroom for a compact, the hatch misses the mark. Likewise cargo space is hampered by the feature I like the best about this thing, the angled slope of the hatch.  There’s 17.8 cubic feet behind the 60/40 split-folding rear seats that grows to 23.3 with the rear seats down. So, yes the normal utility of a hatch is lost on the due to its design.

Of course these days it’s more about entertainment and connectivity when it come to cars more than anything else. Toyota’s Entune infotainment system gets a 7.0 inch screen to control the Apple CarPlay and other gadgets. There’s Nav and Sat radio to sweeten the road the trip to the Pacific coast.

 While the XSE may have some marketing jargon pointing towards a hot hatch, it falls short of running with the likes of Volkswagens GTi or Honda’s a Civic Type R. But then in Toyota’s defense it doesn’t have a forty grand price tag either. A more appropriate moniker would be, sporty hatchback.

Is the XSE everything I expected when I first saw it, sadly no, it is loud, especially when pushed. Yes it has it short comings but they can be forgiven because its attributes outweigh them. It’s a composed compact with a more compliant ride, sharper steering input, and superior handling thanks to a new multi-link rear suspension over the old sedan. For fans who have loved Toyota’s reliability, this is easily their best Corolla’s yet.
