2020 GMC Acadia AT4 Off-Road Review: Looking the Part
Ask most GMC owners what type of vehicle they own, and you’re likely to hear them say a “Denali.” Of course, the Denali is not an actual model but a popular trim. In fact, in some segments, the take rate for this top-of-the-line trim is over 50 percent and the envy of just about every truck and SUV manufacturer. And now it looks like lightning is striking once again in the form of the AT4 trim package on pickups and now, the 2020 GMC Acadia.
The 2020 Acadia AT4 is the automaker’s newest model to offer a premium off-road package; the trim will slot just above the well-equipped SLT and below the more luxurious Denali. Some of the more significant features and upgrades include standard 17-inch gloss black wheels (20-inch wheels are optional), more aggressive all-terrain tires, more pronounced black-lined wheel arches, a unique grille design with gloss black inserts, gloss black roof rails, and a new multi-setting twin-clutch AWD system.
We recently took a quick drive in the updated 2020 GMC Acadia just outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where we navigated the high-altitude highways and several dirt roads sitting above a 6,000-foot elevation. All Acadia AT4s will be equipped with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine, good for 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, along with a new nine-speed automatic transmission—a conventional shifter has been replaced by pushbuttons to free up center console space. Even at higher altitudes, we found the Acadia AT4’s throttle response fairly quick and immediate off the line and smooth as it accelerates through the powerband.
We’ve had mixed experiences with nine-speed transmissions in the past but found this version solid in the lower gears and quick to downshift when we put our foot into it. Although this powertrain combination doesn’t feel like it’s going to blow anyone away in a straight-line duel with three-row SUV competitors, we found there was plenty of power for high-speed merging into traffic. Our only complaint with the setup is that this new package, presumably designed to offer a sportier feel, doesn’t allow for us to see what gear we’re in unless we shift manually using the hugely inconvenient center console pushbutton setup. Not only does the console location make it tough to see without a long downward glance off the road, but you have to lean over to do it.
To test the 2020 Acadia AT4 off-road, we did a little dirt road running through the fields and forests leading us to some Snake River fishing holes, several with nasty stream crossings and muddy holes to navigate. As a result, we had the chance to move the dual-clutch AWD system to the Mountain Road setting, giving us quick throttle response, a more appropriate traction control setting, and a more controlled gear hold and shift pattern. Frankly, we had more fun on the dirt roads in the Sport setting, which allowed us to run through the lower of the nine gears faster to get up to speed quicker, where we could spin the tires more freely.
Despite our brief off-road adventure, no one should mistake the 2020 Acadia AT4 for a serious off-roader—ground clearance is just over 7 inches, there’s very little suspension flex, and without an extra low-range gear, all traction benefits are done with smarter software. Even so, there’s plenty of capability here to expand the vehicle’s comfort zone. We’re guessing relatively few people will run through the multi-traction settings as much as we do, but we’d prefer GMC included a few more settings (or more bandwidth to the existing ones) to allow for more slipping and sliding fun when the roads turn nasty.
Our favorite feature to the new Acadia AT4 package? We found the 255/65R17 Continental TerrainContact all-terrain tires performed exceptionally well in grabbing and flinging mud, as well as keeping us moving smoothly over the slippery river rock. No matter which of the five settings our Traction Select was in (High 2, High 4, Sport, Trail, or Towing), the tires’ grip gave us all the traction we needed no matter what the challenge.
It’s also worth noting that the most significant changes for all 2020 Acadias across the full lineup include a completely retuned rear suspension to provide more control to the driver and comfort to rear passengers. GMC has also added an available 2.0-liter turbo-four (delivering 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque), an available head-up display, and a new infotainment system that will personalize itself over time to better fit your needs and preferences.
2020 GMC Acadia Trims and AT4 Pricing
The 2020 GMC Acadia will be offered in SL, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali trim levels. The AT4 package will start at $43,395, offering a maximum towing capacity of 4,000 pounds and a 22-gallon gas tank with AWD (or 19 with FWD models). We’ll have more to say when we get the new 2020 Acadia AT4 in house against its appropriately dressed competition.

The adequate supplementary living room without doubt aids, as does the intensive discretionary V6 motor indeed. We will furthermore say the quiet, acceptable drive as a general top quality with this course. Propelled as some 2014 model, all of the GMC Terrain little hybrid SUV is not currently given that.
2020 GMC Terrain Denali Design
Feature
Any 2020 GMC Terrain Denali will come common with some 2.4-liter several-holding chamber motor that makes 182 energy and 172 lb-ft of torque. Discretionary regarding SLE-2, SLT as well as Denali is any 3.6 liter V6 which produces a hefty 301 hp as well as 272 lb-feet of torque. All of the two engines are coupled with a half a dozen-rate programmed transmission. Top Tire Drive (FWD) is standard, and all of Tire Drive (AWD) is usually discretionary for all trims utilizing the exception to this rule of a base SL show. Within evaluating, a mechanically very similar 4-barrel Chevy Equinox LT by using FWD quickened from no to 60 miles per hour in 9.5 moments, which is hugely more slowly than usual for a little hybrid.

Entirely, GMC has reasonably amended it’s littlest vehicle, all the most visible transform merely being a re-attempt of its nostrils. Also, now there is new Guided daytime operating lamps, the back, and front guards raise modern stainless flourishes, and any hood continues to grow the “power vault,” in spite of the reality that the powertrains as well as their generate remain unaltered.
Within, all of the Terrain is installed with new consistency covers, further cowhide shading judgments, plus an enhanced focus pile with restored drawings that oddly integrate a phone picture undertaken directly from all 1970. 2020 GMC Terrain Denali Engine
Any 2020 GMC Terrain Denali provides a selection in between a gas-efficient some holding chamber motor which enables 180 torque, or merely the throaty 301-move, 3.6-liter V6. The two engines companion with a proficient shifting 6-pace programmed transmission, along with equally could sometimes have front side-drive as well as discretionary all-tire drive. The straight-infused, 2.4-liter some holding chamber is an organic GMC workhorse for a motor, while the V6 is seen in the considerably better GMC Acadia. Using the particular bounteous go-vitality of all the V6, the Terrain can pull as significantly as 3,500 weight, which suggests light-weight vessels, snowmobiles, bicycles.
Kept to the individual devices, the 6-velocity factors the greatest as to what minimum reachable reduced-to finish torque there is and functions capably sufficient. The 301 horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 showed up four years previous, and it is a comparable product line present in the considerably larger Acadia. Throughout the littler, lighter in weight Terrain, typically the V-6 lamps into its auto tires with a muscular burble along with dropkicks usually the conservative hybrid that will 60 miles per hour in all around six secs. Fuel consumption inside the V-6 is not unusual, as well as its working day of function side effects are not way too sleek.

As before, a 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6 paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission is the only powertrain available. Front-wheel drive comes standard and all-wheel drive is optional. EPA fuel economy ratings for the Buick are 18/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 17/25 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Car of the Month: 2020 GMC Acadia AT4
With the COVID-19 pandemic still keeping the vast majority of Americans close to home, chances are most are actively day-dreaming of getting back to normal work and play, especially as warmer weather arrives. Perfect for those dreams, and the reality that is bound to follow, is the revamped 2020 GMC Acadia.
2020 marks the a midcycle refresh for the 2nd generation Acadia, and GMC has made significant improvements to toughen up its image with the new AT4 package. AT4 extras include a unique grille, black chrome accents, and 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, with even nicer looking 20-inch rims optional.
The AT4 comes with the V6 only, as neither of the Acadia’s 4-cylinders are available. But, the 3.6-liter would be our choice anyway, with its 310-horsepower and 271 lb-ft. of torque, it’s more than up for the job of moving this 4,000-lbs. plus utility around.
Naturally, all-wheel-drive is standard. It’s GMC’s latest automatic twin-clutch system that includes a dedicated off-road mode, as well as tow/haul, and the ability to lock it into two-wheel-drive for fuel economy. The new part of the powertrain for all 2020 Acadia’s, is a 9-speed automatic transmission which makes this new effort feel decidedly quicker. With it, comes the removal of the console shifter however, replaced by a row of buttons at the base of the center stack. The plus is more small item storage and convenience.
Since the AT4 is fitted with all-terrain tires with more flexible sidewalls, it takes a small step back in handling, but not so much that most buyers would notice the difference. Steering is still very tight and direct, so you should have no problem staying on top of things.
All 2020 Acadia’s get unique styling tweaks; there’s a new 230–horsepower I4 turbo engine available; and the infotainment system gets an upgrade and is more user-friendly, including easier to use navigation and higher resolution for the back-up camera display. Other technology improvements include a clearer Head-Up display, and GM’s rear camera mirror.
Save for some AT4 logos, not much else changes inside the Acadia. You can outfit an AT4 with either 5,6, or 7-passenger capacity. There is plenty of space for all number of passengers plus their gear. On that, cargo capacity remains unchanged at 41.7 cubic-ft.; expanding to 79.0 with the rear seatbacks folded.
For our complete road test of the 2020 GMC Acadia AT4, be sure to catch MotorWeek episode #3918 that begins airing May 29, 2020. For a listing of the public television stations that broadcast MotorWeek, go to motorweek.org and click the “About The Show” tab at the top. MotorWeek is also seen Tuesday evenings and throughout the week on the MotorTrend cable network.
So, the 2020 GMC Acadia AT4 may not be a serious off-road machine. But it is a new, rugged-looking, yet attractive Acadia option that comes with little to no compromise for all the summer family outings we hope arrive sooner rather than later.
