CHRYSLER PACIFICA 2020: 10 THINGS TO KNOW
As soon as the Pacifica was parked in my driveway, I set out to do what I hadn’t done with a minivan for a very long time, from the time I crammed my wife, children and luggage into it (more or less in that order) before setting off on a family expedition to a beach in Maine: I juggled with the 8 seats of this Chrysler product to determine all the possible combinations… and collect at least 10 things to know in the process!
1 The test of tests
After all, the versatility of a minivan is the number one reason a consumer is interested in this type of vehicle. Not the engine, a little bit the fuel consumption, never the look. How will it accommodate my tribe and their possessions is THE question.
So I tackled each seat as if it were a Rubik cube. To make the challenge even more interesting, I refrained from consulting the owner’s manual. Because it shouldn’t take a Mensa quotient to change the configuration of a cockpit. At least, that’s what I was hoping for …
2 Advance backward!
I started with the back seats. In anticipation of a trip, they are always the first ones to leave or stay, depending on the passenger/case equation to be solved. And then, it allows you to start the race slowly, standing under the tailgate. Kneeling on the floor to unhook the other seats will come soon enough…
3 Beautiful invention
Now, at the back, the first thing you notice is the hole. The pit. When both bottom seats are used, this gap in the floor allows of course to stack more luggage. But when the seats have to fade away, this abyss swallows them up. This is the Stow ‘n Go, the system born in 2005 in the Town & Country, the ancestor of Pacifica, which can be translated as “Range & Part”.
First you grab the strap marked with the number 1 (“Elemental, my dear Watson!”) to fold down the headrests. Then by pulling the strap 2, see the entire seat tilt into the hollow. Simple and very ingenious. So much so that the Honda Odyssey, the Toyota Sienna and the Kia Sedona have all taken the idea on board (Toyota named it Split-n-Stow).
At the height of refinement, spend more at Chrysler and the Stow ‘n Go gets electrified. One little button and hop! Admire the choreography!
4 An exception
Speaking of electricity, Pacifica is famous for its PHEV version. The same 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 in my test vehicle, but with an Atkinson-cycle engine, is fitted with a 16-kWh battery as a bonus to allow this Plug-In Hybrid Pacifica to travel about 50 kilometers in 100% electric mode (the new Sienna 2021 will be hybrid but not plug-in). The good news is that the back seats of the PHEV variant also benefit from the Stow ‘n Go.
5 The shelter show
Now it’s the turn of the central squares! In the regular Pacifica (and in the Dodge Grand Caravan, the cheap cousin), the Stow ‘n Go works there too, a feat exclusive to both FCA vans. Why not in the rivals? I’ve asked Kia, Honda and Toyota. The latter responded that its Magic Slide center row provides best-in-class access and clearance to the back seat occupants, and while its seats are “easily” removable, few families bother.
The Sedona uses the Slide ‘n Stow system, with the center seats rising vertically to create a clear floor clearance and an excellent passageway to the third row. In the Pacifica, access to the back is cut by grabbing a handle on the middle seats. Pull on it and the rear of the seat lifts and tilts forward to open up a decent corridor.
6 Another treat
So I said: it’s time to go for the central squares! Here, no electric magic trick, except for the Auto Advance ‘n Return button on the B-pillar that automatically slides the driver and passenger throne to allow the middle seats to perform the Stow ‘n Go operation without interference. A piece of equipment missing from my version, so I did the same but manually.

The back seats and the side seats of the center disappeared in the floor, this one is not yet naked for all that. There’s still the eighth seat, the least comfortable middle one, the one that turns into an armrest and cup holder when the backrest is folded down, or the one that doesn’t exist at all in the 7-seat versions of the Pacifica, which prefer two captain’s seats. What do we do with this seat runt who is reluctant to disappear into the basement of the vehicle? We evict him.
At floor level, see the strap. Hey yes, another one! Pull and the rear anchors are released. Now I’m on my knees and I lift everything. It comes fairly easily, then it blocks. There’s the seat belt coming down from the ceiling that holds the bataclan.
How do you get rid of it? I knock for five minutes before I discover that the fastener near the cushion has a small red slit. What if I push it in? But with what? With the metal tongue that normally goes into the belt buckle to strap the seat occupant. And, in fact, by pointing the metal wedge into the slot, the belt will not come off. Chrysler has even provided an overhead nest to store it. I can finally get the 8th seat out of the Pacifica. Mission accomplished! Hallelujah!
10 Tweaked question
My Pacifica Touring had a basic price of $43,495 and a total price of $49,665 with options and shipping. The L model is the least expensive of the range starting at $37,995. The PHEV variant starts at $53,095. The Pacifica 2021 will arrive in the last quarter of the year. Big news, all-wheel drive will be optional (except for the PHEV), like the Sienna. We don’t yet know how much it will cost, but we do know that there will be a Pacifica 2020 AWD Launch Edition starting at $50,090.

The 2020 Chrysler Voyager Is a Less Expensive Pacifica
Minivan sales continue to slide, but FCA is committed to the segment and is bringing back the Voyager name on some lower trim levels of the Chrysler Pacifica to better cover the market.
The 2020 Chrysler Voyager replaces the Pacifica L and LX models and adds an LXi for fleet customers. The standard seven-passenger minivan will start at around $28,000. The dimensions remain the same. The Voyager is distinguishable by the new badging on the liftgate.
At the higher end, the family vehicle keeps the Pacifica name. The Pacifica is offered in Touring, Touring L, Touring L Plus, and Limited trims and is available as a plug-in hybrid.
And for the foreseeable future, FCA will continue to build and sell the Dodge Grand Caravan that is the previous generation minivan. It will continue to be the least expensive option. Dodge chief Tim Kuniskis says there is no end date for the Grand Caravan as long as there is still demand, capacity at the plant, and the aging vehicle can meet all regulatory requirements.
Pacifica, Voyager, and Grand Caravan will all be built in Windsor, Ontario, which will be discontinuing its third shift of production in October. Voyager production begins in August and it will be available in late summer.
The Voyager has the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine which generates 287 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
It has a different fascia, less chrome, cloth seats, and a lot of manual controls on the base model, and it does not have the same fancy projector headlights or high-end materials.
The base L trim level has a second-row bench seat; LX adds second-row quad seats with in-floor storage bins, and the LXi fleet model has second-row Stow ‘n Go, but the third row is a conventional cargo hold.
But it has a lot of the tech families want, such as ParkSense rear park assist with stop, blind-spot monitoring, and Rear Cross Path detection. Drivers have a 3.5-inch digital information display and for connectivity, the Voyager has the Uconnect 4 system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Available options on the Voyager L and LX include SafetyTec Group with optional Cold Weather Group Package, Stow ‘n Place roof rack, and a single overhead DVD on the Voyager LX.
For fleets, the LXi has durable leatherette seats to withstand the rigors of rental cars and also gets remote start, security alarm, a roof rack, garage door opener, second-row retractable sunshades, and auto-dim rearview mirror.
To meet the needs of the disabled, the Voyager is available with BraunAbility rear- and side-entry conversions to accommodate a wheelchair. It benefits from wider entry, ramps, and more space inside.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Review: Swallow Your Pride – This Beats an SUV
For most Americans, a minivan is the best people-hauler for the demographic called parents-with-kids-and-all-their-crap. And the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica minivan serves the demographic better than virtually every other sports utility vehicle or minivan. You can have a Pacifica sort-of-inexpensive or trimmed in leather, with or without hiding stowable second-and-third-row seats, or as a plug-in hybrid, all with third-row seats usable by adults. Come 2021, you’ll again be able to get the Pacifica with all-wheel-drive.
The Pacifica handles relatively well. The plug-in hybrid goes 32 miles on battery power and has a battery-plus-engine cruising range of 520 miles. It is roomier and lighter than a full-size SUV. On the downside, some useful driver assists are optional on the Pacifica. Pacifica’s reliability from recent years past is not on par with competing minivans, especially from Toyota and Kia.
The Pacifica is one of the few three-row vehicles comfortable in all three rows.
On the Road with Pacifica
I drove an upscale Pacifica Hybrid with a full suite of driver assists, the latest UConnect 4 infotainment system, and black leather seats with contrasting stitching. It feels roomier than a full-size SUV because it’s roughly the size of the full-size Dodge Durango SUV, 203.8 inches versus the Durango’s 201.2. With a shorter nose and without the sloping rear of some SUVs, plus a couple more inches of width than Durango, there’s a lot more room in the Pacifica for people and cargo inside.
Handling is pretty good for something that weighs a handful of pounds shy of 5,000. It gets to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds via a 3.6-liter V6 Atkinson cycle gas engine (higher efficiency, lower peak power) and an electric motor that net 260 hp, all driving the front wheels. Once in a while during testing, the nine-speed automatic was slow to shift or thunked into the next gear. The shifter is a rotary knob on the dashboard. Most reviewers hate shifter knobs (or buttons). I say: They leave more room for cupholders and phones on the dash or console. Nobody manually shifts a minivan. This knob would work better if it was coated in grippy rubber.
The infotainment system and navigation, called UConnect and now up to version 4, continues to be one of the easier packages to comprehend. The display is 8 inches diagonal, which is good, but a 10-inch display would be nicer (likely on 2021 models).
2020 Chrysler Pacifica.
The Pacifica excels three ways:
Around town, driving is almost zero-cost because the 16-kWh battery tucked under the floor lets you cover 32 miles of commuting to work, car-pooling, and handling daily driving tasks. It will recharge overnight on 120-volt power, or in about two hours at 240 volts. Many owners won’t burn any gasoline most days of the week, although maybe you might, because there’s no button to force the Pacifica to run electric-only before going to the combustion engine. So Chrysler uses an algorithm to decide when to use what. In a week of driving, I averaged 29 mpg, close to Chrysler’s 30 mpg EPA overall rating, which is quite good for a 2.5-ton vehicle.
Second, on longer weekend or vacation trips, you get up to 520 miles of driving. You only have to fill up once a day. Yes, the kids have to go pee more often than that, but the interstate service area choreography of one parent taking the kids to the bathroom while the other heads for the fueling islands, then meeting up while the refueler parent dashes back to the restrooms, seems to save very little time.
For weekday carpooling tasks and weekend family trips, you can fit up to seven people; the middle row is always two buckets, not a bench. And everybody, in every seating position, is plenty comfortable, especially in the hybrid. The under-floor battery means there’s no space for the stowable (Stow ‘N Go) seats that fold into the floor, but those stowable seats are thinner and less comfortable. The comfier PHEV’s seats are heavy to take out, though.
The Pacifica has upscale finishes on most trim lines. The UConnect 4 center stack display is 8.4 inches.
Lots of Trim Lines
Shopping for a Chrysler Pacifica starts with “Where do I start?” There are eight Pacifica gas-engine versions, five of them called Pacifica Touring (gut none called Pacifica Car Pooling); plus six Pacifica Hybrid versions; plus more two gas-engine entry model Pacificas, only they’re called Chrysler Voyagers (explanation below). As for the hybrid models, there are three Touring models (Touring, Touring, 35th Anniversary Touring L) and three Limited models (Limited, Limited 35th Anniversary, Limited Red S). The hybrid 35th Anniversary (of the first Chrysler Corp. minivans) and S models are upholstery, badging, and paint variants. If this sounds confusing, it is, and there’s not much on the Chrysler Pacifica website that helps you see what features are on what trim lines.
The least costly hybrid, the Touring, is $41,490 including $1,495 freight. That is $6,250 more than the gas-engine Touring, but you are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, so really it costs less. The Touring gets you power-sliding doors, heated mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, three-zone climate control, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB jacks. Driver assists are blind-spot warning/rear-cross-traffic-alert (same system) and rear parking sonar. No forward-facing driver assists.
The Touring L, $45,780 including freight, may be the sweet spot: It adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate. But it, too, lacks a full range of driver assists.
The Limited, $47,340, is where you can add a fuller array of driver assists. It has nicer leather, vented front seats, navigation, UConnect Theater (rear entertainment), and 20-speaker audio. For $995 you can add the Advanced Safety Tec Group: stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, advanced forward collision warning, advanced lane departure warning, parallel/perpendicular parking assist, front sonar (rear is standard) with auto-stop, and surround cameras. You can also add a $1,895 panoramic sunroof.
The top-line Hybrid Limited Red S fully optioned runs $52,000, before tax credit.

The Shrinking Minivan Market
Minivans as we know them date to the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, boxy vehicles, some with woodgrain wrap on the sides. They helped keep Chrysler Corp. alive. (The vehicles, not necessarily the woodgrain.) Sales of minivans, all brands, peaked in 2000 with 1.4 million sold, 8 percent of the year’s 17 million sales. Most had three rows of seats, and even the third row was reasonably comfortable at a time when there were far fewer SUVs. And they drove like cars at a time when SUVs didn’t.
Minivans were popular with college-educated boomer parents in the suburbs who drove their children to sports practices a lot, had similar-to-each-other buying patterns, got involved in the PTA, and tended to vote. Demographers called them soccer moms or soccer parents, which annoyed the heck out of them, more because soccer mom was too easily understood as well as misunderstood. In retaliation – “how dare these people reduce me to two words” – they switched to SUVs that were bigger, top-heavier, tipsier (until electronic stability control came along), cost you 3-5 mpg in fuel economy, and lacked room for teens in row three. Nothing like seeing six kids in shorts and cleats disembark from a GMC Yukon Denali, not a Pacifica, to prove you’re not a soccer dad or mom.
Fast forward to 2019, and sales of the five minivan models (plus leftover Chrysler Town & Countrys) amounted to just over 400,000, or 2 percent of the (again) 17 million sales of light vehicles. The best-seller Dodge Grand Caravan gets the majority of sales in fleet markets, making the Honda Odyssey and Pacifica the top two sellers to individuals.

Should You Buy?
If you do a lot of urban driving, you’ll likely love how much of it can be on electricity, where the cost of electricity (low) is equivalent in cost to the Pacifica getting 82 mpg on gasoline. It is roomy on legroom as well as side to side shoulder room, so you really can get three across in back.
The Pacifica scores well on IIHS safety tests: good overall on crashworthiness, and a Top Safety Pick. However, it’s light on standard driver safety assists: Blind spot warning is standard, plus government-required features such as a rear camera. If you want a fuller range of assists that help especially on long highway trips, you’ll really want one of the Limited trims and the features of the Advanced Safety Tec package.

Against the competition, the same money, roughly, will get you the sensational Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade three-row SUVs with less space and a premium-car fit and finish. Against other SUVs, the Honda Odyssey is well-thought-out and so is the Toyota Sienna, which is the only minivan to offer all-wheel-drive. The Kia Sedona, less flashy, has rock-solid build quality and reliability on its side. Consumer Reports rates recent Sedonas at 3, 4 or 5 of 5, while the Pacifica is rated at 1 or 2 out of 5.
The Chrysler Pacifica has been out since the 2017 model year. It gets a significant refresh for the 2021 model year with all-wheel-drive offered on the gas-engine Pacifica only (Chrysler last had an AWD minivan in 2004). Chrysler could have redirected the PHEV’s electric power to the rear wheels for all-wheel-drive (as Toyota has done to create AWD on a front-drive car), but chose not to. There’s a new, version 5, of UConnect Drive by Android software. And there’ll be an additional trim line at the top end, called Pinnacle. To keep up with the competition, the 2021 Pacifica will make standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning/lane-keeping assistance.

Mazda staged a white NA, a blue NB, and a red NC MX-5 Miata just offstage from the Racing Orange ND convertible and RF coupe 30th Anniversary editions of the sports car. NA design chief Tom Matano and “Father of the Miata” Bob Hall were on hand for the unveiling, and a couple of hours later, the U.S. allotment of 500 Anniversary models were sold out.
Acura’s stand had an original ’90 NSX and a new one, both in red, as John Ikeda, who was Honda R&D of America chief in the late ’80s, waxed nostalgic about the first Japanese supercar’s development and introduction, with spokesman Sage Marie and former Car and Driver editor-in-chief Csaba Csere. There was a big crowd and Acura ran out of bubbly for the champagne toast.
Both the Miata and NSX, as the NS-X concept, made their global premieres at this show in 1989. Elsewhere this year at McCormick Place, Fiat Chrysler celebrated 35 years of the minivan, with a special-edition Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Grand Caravan, and a 1984 Plymouth Voyager on display. Volkswagen unveiled its new Jetta GLI with a 35th anniversary edition of that model.
But it’s the 30th anniversary of the Miata and NSX that got us to wondering whether the 2020 Chicago Auto Show might finally once again have a number of big introductions and grab some important premieres when Detroit moves next year from January to June. Or will those introductions go to Los Angeles in November and CES in January instead? For now, here are the cars and trucks you need to see at the 2019 Chicago show:
HIT: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sometimes it’s best to do what’s expected. We figured the all-new Jetta GLI would return to being a GTI with a trunk, as it was known for a long time, and that’s exactly how the product manager described it to us. Having started my family at a young age, I’ve always preferred the GLI to the GTI, and this one delivers what I want: subtle sportiness that speaks of security rather than a need to show off. Past GLIs have generally been a bit softer than GTIs, but VW says this won’t be the case for the new car; it has used the GTI’s handling as the benchmark, and given the minor weight differences between the Golf and the GTI, that’s doable. The new Jetta GLI fills me with hope, and there’s little chance it will disappoint.—Aaron Gold
While I find the base Jetta to be uninspired, and figure it’s going to age rather quickly, I’m impressed by the latest GLI. It ditches the regular Jetta’s torsion-beam rear end for a multilink suspension, and 228 horsepower with 258 lb-ft of torque are numbers many other sport-trim FWD compact sedans would love to have. I’m taken with the ghost gray model on display on the show floor, with its six-speed manual gearbox. I put the over-under on this car at $35,000 (it was $30,000 not long ago). Load up too many options and there are other, more interesting competitors in the $35,000-to-$40,000 range.—Todd Lassa
MISS: 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Okay, so, what’s with making the DCC adaptive-damper system exclusive to the limited-run 35th Anniversary Edition? Why does Volkswagen always seem to hobble their performance cars a little bit? Back when the current-gen GTI came out, it charged extra for the most powerful engine tune and a limited-slip diff. It has cut that crap, but now it’s narrowing availability of DCC to a limited-run model which will no doubt demand a price premium. I wouldn’t object to making DCC an optional extra, although if VW really cared about making the right impression, it would fit it as standard to the Jetta GLI. DCC really hones the GTI and Golf R’s edge, letting the driver choose between super-sharp handling and a more comfortable commute. But not even offering it as an option means that buyers who want a GLI with leather—or who don’t want to pay extra for a limited-edition car—have to do with second-rate handling. That’s just silly, and if I were a VW fan, I’d be insulted.—AG
REVELATION: The 2020 Subaru Legacy goes premium. I can’t call the new Legacy a hit. The sheetmetal is more “anodyne midsize sedan” than “interestingly awkward Subaru.” I can’t call it a miss, because it’s on Subaru’s impressive new global platform, so it’s likely to ride and handle better than it looks. With this new midsize model, Subaru is on board with most of its Japanese brethren and Volkswagen in figuring the midsize sedan segment isn’t going to shrink much more, and so it can pick up market share from the larger players discontinuing their car lines. With its new top trim level, the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four-powered Touring XT, Subaru has the opportunity to rake in SUV-sized profit margins with the new Legacy.—TL
