2019 LA Auto Show: Six Star Cars
With the 2019 LA Auto Show just a week away, now’s the perfect time to take a quick look at some of the new models set to be unveiled in the LA Convention Center. Below we’ve listed a half-dozen of our favorites, plus be sure to visit the CarGurus Facebook page and CarGurus YouTube channel during the LA Show press days on November 20th and 21st for updates.
Without further ado, here are six cars that have already piqued our interest.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Two things tell you all you need to know about the faith Ford has in its all-new and all-electric SUV. First, there’s the name—because you don’t call something a Mustang without also inviting intense scrutiny about its heritage, positioning, and performance. Mustang it is, though, albeit with an added “Mach-E” for good measure.
Second is the fact that Ford’s opening press surrounding the car hasn’t detailed its drivetrain or performance, but simply informed customers that it’ll be taking pre-orders (via a deposit) the moment the official unveil ends on November 18. Now that’s confidence.
Among the options for those pre-ordering a car will be to go for a lavish First Edition model, although Ford stresses that “timing will be critical” for anybody looking to secure a vehicle in this spec. Whatever Mustang Mach-E takes your fancy, it’s hard not to think that with the right styling and performance, this could be one of the hottest cars to go on sale in 2020.
Audi RS Q8
It is unlikely anybody could come away from a drive in Audi’s Q8 and think that what it really needs is more power. However, the imminent arrival of the RS Q8 will provide precisely that, courtesy of Audi Sport’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. With what is likely to be around 600 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, the RS Q8 is expected to get from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and has already lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:42:2. That—because we know you’re wondering—is a record for a production SUV.
The RS Q8 will be joined in LA by Audi’s latest RS 6 Avant, which is making its debut on US soil along with its five-door coupe sibling, the RS 7. Powered by the same V8 as the RS Q8, the RS 6 can get from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Having never been offered in the US before, it’ll be interesting to see if Audi’s muscular estate is as well-received here as it has been with European buyers.
Porsche 911 Manual
The debut of an old-fashioned manual transmission in a car that’s already been for sale for almost a year would not be normally deemed newsworthy. But when the car in question is a Porsche 911, things are a little different. To a non-car person the surprise would grow further upon learning that by gaining a manual, the latest 992-generation 911 becomes slower rather than faster; for that, thank the fact that Porsche’s dual-clutch automatics now change gear so quickly it’s simply not possible to match them when you throw human limbs into the equation. As a guide, Porsche is quoting a 0-60 time of around 4.0 seconds for the 992 Carrera S manual versus 3.3 for the PDK automatic.
However, speed is not everything in a performance car. What some buyers also crave is the tactile interaction that a manual offers, whether it’s the weighty feel of the clutch pedal, the precise throw of the shifter, or the joy of a perfectly executed heel-toe downshift. And these are precisely the people Porsche is targeting with the installation of its 7-speed manual in the Carrera S and Carrera 4S versions of the 992. Rumour is these cars—and that gearbox—will be on the stand in LA. Watch this space.
Bollinger B1 and B2
Slab-sided and right-angle rich, Bollinger’s built-in-Detroit, all-electric, all-aluminum, all-black LA Auto Show debuts look less sleek than any other vehicles expected to hit the show floor. The B1 “sport utility truck” promises all-wheel drive, 10 inches of wheel travel, 15 inches of ground clearance, and a 200-mile range despite its 5,000-pound curb weight. With 614 horsepower, 668 pound-feet of torque, and a list of removable parts and off-roading angles reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler’s, we can’t help but be intrigued.
The longer B2 electric pickup truck shares the B1’s powertrain, weight, range, and most of its removable parts, not to mention its full-length central pass-through, which in the B2’s case will accommodate cargo up to 16 feet long. Each of these trucks features air conditioning and 10 110-volt outlets (we can’t help but wonder how those will impact range). At $125,000 each, these vehicles aren’t intended for the masses, which is probably fine for now, as Bollinger hasn’t found a production partner yet.
MINI Cooper John Cooper Works GP and SE
Featuring enough airflow-managing scoops and bulges to shame Ford’s buttressed GT in addition to a huge rear wing/spoiler, the third-generation MINI John Cooper Works GP aims to whet appetites for a limited-edition 3,000-unit high-performance 2020 model. The GP concept and its 301-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder recently lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 8 minutes, making it the fastest MINI model ever produced. It should reach US showrooms in mid-2020 at a price of $45,750, including an $850 destination fee.
MINI’s stand will also feature the new MINI Cooper SE, an all-new EV based on the MINI Hardtop 2-door launched in 2014. The SE’s electric motor supplies 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft to the front wheels, getting the car from 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 93 mph. A full charge will be possible in as little as 4 hours at home, and charging to 80% can happen as quickly as 35 minutes at a public charging station. The SE should reach dealers in March 2020 at an MSRP of $30,750, including a similar $850 destination fee.
Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion Concept
Volkswagen’s fleet of ID. concept cars will welcome its seventh member at the Petersen Auto Museum November 19th with the world debut of the ID. Space Vizzion crossover concept. VW describes this new vehicle as combining the aerodynamics of a gran turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV in a zero-emissions car with a range of up to 300 miles.
Looking like a very long, low, streamlined station wagon, the ID. Space Vizzion, unlike the earlier ID. Vizzion, features a steering wheel and a very large but horizontal digital control panel on the dashboard. Using sustainable interior materials, the cabin features AppleSkin, a vegan alternative to leather that’s made with leftovers from apple-juice production. Volkswagen plans to release a production version in late 2021, with different versions available in North America, Europe, and China.

Tesla Unveils the Stoner Truck. Sorry, Cybertruck. It’s as Big as an F-150.
The Tesla Cybertruck is unlike anything you’ve seen before: sharp creases and angles, like something doodled by a (talented) high schooler in that boring history class, or imagined for a science fiction movie. It is also a competitively priced pickup, listed at $40,000 to $70,000 with one to three motors. Speaking of science fiction, CEO Elon Musk said delivery will be in 2021, which is as little 58 weeks away, as much as 109 weeks away. Tesla has a history of missing ship dates, and not by a small margin.
The design is so far outside the pickup truck norm, with an angled bed cover, stainless steel body, and shatterproof windows (which of course shattered during the announcement), that there is considerable belief the design will change significantly between now and the, uh, 2021 launch date. So Cybertruck may be a working name.
The Tesla Cybertruck is about the same size as the best-selling Ford F-150.
Specs on the Tesla Cybertruck
The Tesla Cybertruck is sized like a full-size pickup truck, which can be anywhere from 210 to 250 inches long depending on the cab size and truck bed size. For the Cybertruck, shown above overlaid on a Ford F-150, it’s 231.7 inches long with a 6.5-foot bed, 78.8 inches wide, and 75.0 inches high. So that answers the question of whether it’s a mid-size competitor (Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline) or full-size competitor (Chevrolet Silverado, F-150, Ram 1500). It’s full-size. The Tesla has a roll-up bed cover and the tailgate drops down to act as a cargo ramp.
Most big pickups are body-on-(ladder) frame, which yields a heavier vehicle than unibody construction where there’s no separate frame. Truckers say it’s sturdier and lasts longer. Tesla is joining Honda in building a truck where the body panels — here, stainless steel — give the truck its rigidity and crash resistance.
According to the introduction presentation by Musk, the cargo bed holds 3,500 pounds. The strongest model tows 14,000 pounds, which is a serious boat or travel trailer. (Also a serious drain on travel distance.)
The entry-level Cybertruck, $39,900, has a single motor, a range of 250-plus miles (these are all Tesla specs), a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of 110 mph. It tows 7,500 pounds. The dual-motor Cybtruck, $49,900, does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, travels 300-plus miles on a single charge, and tows 10,000 pounds.
The top-end Cybertruck, $69,900, has three motors, runs 500-plus miles, does 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, tops out at 130 mph, and has the 14,000-pound tow capacity, more even than Ram 1500. (Which is shipping, and towing.) For this one, Musk says, production “is expected to begin in late 2022.”
Musk says the Cybertruck “is literally bulletproof to a 9mm handgun.” Designer Franz von Holzhausen couldn’t much dent the stainless steel body. He did better on the window glass.
Bulletproof Body, Armored Glass (Right)
Musk says the stainless steel body is bulletproof, meaning it will stop a 9mm round (“full metal jacket, 115 grain [bullet]”). The intro site being in California, which looks unkindly on ricochets hitting someone in the audience (even if it’s just journalists), a sledgehammer was used and showed a dent but not penetration. Then it was on to proving the windows are armored nicely, too …
Von Holzhausen hurled a tennis-ball size metal sphere at the shatterproof glass and … oops.
… and wouldn’t you know it, designer Franz von Holzhausen managed to crack the driver-side window. So they tried again on the left passenger window …
The second throw took out the rear window. “That was a little too hard,” Musk said, adding, “there’s room for improvement.”
… and took out that window as well. For what it’s worth, a demo dropping the same ball down a tube onto the glass from a stepladder left that glass intact. And the car’s glass cracked but the plasticized layer held the glass pieces together, with no splinters that might hurt passengers in a crash or a gunfight.
Prospects for the Tesla Truck
Tesla will not be the first to deliver an electric pickup. Startup Rivian, with lots of funding (from Ford, Amazon, and others) and a less mercurial — sorry, less colorful — guy at the helm is getting closer to production in the fall of 2020. The R1T’s specs say 750 hp and a range of 400 miles. It will tow 11,000 pounds. There’s also a similar R1S SUV.
Ford says it will spend $11.5 billion on electrification by 2020. It has $500 million in Rivian and will use Rivian technology — the skateboard chassis with the batteries, motor, and controls – on an ePickup.
Bollinger’s B2, unveiled this week at the LA Auto Show, is a rugged looker with a 614 hp engine and a price of $125,000. And General Motors just month announced it’s doing a family of premium pickups and SUVs and may resurrect the Hummer name.
Other Voices Heard
Others have upbeat thoughts on the Tesla Cybertruck.
Car and Driver:
Assuming this is really the electric pickup Tesla is going to build and not an elaborate prank, it is utterly unlike any of the upcoming electric-truck competition from Ford, General Motors, or even Lordstown [GM factory] or Rivian.
Eletrek:
[W]hatever you think about its design, you have to be impressed by the specs. The electric pickup truck blows gas-powered pickup trucks out of the water and compares shockingly well to the Rivian R1T, the only other electric pickup with official specs.
One final piece of humor surrounding the Tesla unveiling: It was held at the same Hawthorne Municipal Airport where Ford on Sunday unveiled the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. Elon Musk sent a congratulatory tweet to Ford saying how nice it was that Ford supports EVs. Privately, there were many reports that he was ticked that Ford’s unveiling site was within not only on the airport but within 100 yards of both the Tesla Design Studio and Musk’s SpaceX operation.

2019 Ford Edge ST, 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, 2021 Porsche 911 GT3: This Week's Top Photos
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=5030&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr 2019 Ford Edge ST Ford has a version of its Edge crossover with 335 horsepower on tap, and we’ve just driven one. It’s called the Edge ST, and it’s the replacement for last year’s Edge Sport. Find out what it’s like in our first drive review. 2019 Audi e-tron prototype first drive, Namibia, Africa, October, 2018 Another vehicle we tested was Audi’s new e-tron, albeit in prototype form only. We found the e-tron to be a promising entry to the electric car arena, especially when you factor in the very reasonable $75,795 starting price. 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan If money’s no option then you may want to sample Rolls-Royce’s absolutely royal Cullinan. It starts almost $100k above the rival Bentley Bentayga and could quite possibly become the British brand’s most popular model. After driving one in Wyoming, we now know why. 2021 Porsche 911 GT3 spy shots – Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien A new generation of the 911, the 992, arrives later this year in Carrera and Carrera S guise. However, Porsche is already out testing more hardcore variants of the car including the GT3, a new prototype for which was spotted this week. The good news is that it looks like it will stick with a naturally aspirated engine. 2019 Hennessey Heritage Edition Ford F-150 Hennessey is back with a tuned Ford F-150 spitting out 758 horsepower. The truck is the Texan tuner’s latest creation to don the Heritage Edition label, and it’s priced from $74,500, which includes the cost of the donor F-150. 2018 Pickup Design Exy 6×6 Mercedes-Benz X-Class Another tuned pickup in the headlines this week was the crazy Exy 6×6 based on the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. It was developed by a firm called Pickup Design, and right now it’s only a concept. Bollinger B2 Electric car startup Bollinger this week showed off a new pickup truck called the B2. It’s a sister vehicle to Bollinger’s B1 SUV first shown in 2017, and should all go to plan it will be in production at a plant in Michigan around 2020. 2019 Mazda CX-5 (Japanese spec) The Mazda CX-5 is one of our favorite crossovers, thanks to sporty handling. That handling should soon be improved thanks to the addition of G-Vectoring Control Plus, which applies the brakes on the outside wheels when exiting a corner to stabilize the vehicle. Better yet, the CX-5 is also about to see Mazda’s 2.5-liter turbo added to the powertrain lineup. Via MotorAuthority

Bollinger Follows Up the B1 SUV with the All-Electric B2 Pickup Truck
Bollinger Motors beat Jeep, Land Rover, and everyone else to the punch when it introduced an all-electric off-road SUV called the B1 a year ago. Now, the company is at it again with the B2 electric pickup that looks equally utilitarian. At this time, the New York-based EV maker has only released CAD renderings of the truck, but it hopes to build functional prototypes early next year.
Specs for the new pickup are pretty much the same as for the B1. Both aluminum-bodied vehicles have a front and rear motor enabling an output of 520 hp and 514 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain is apparently good for a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 100 mph. Both vehicles receive a 120-kilowatt-hour battery pack and an estimated range of 200 miles per charge. The B2 is about 200 pounds heavier than the B1, but they can both tow 7,500 pounds. All-wheel drive is standard and just like the B1, the B2 benefits from 15 inches of ground clearance.
Of course, the biggest difference between the two models is in the rear. The pickup truck’s bed measures 4-feet-1-inch wide by 5-feet-9-inches long. With the rear seats removed, the truck can carry 72 4×8 sheets of plywood, Bollinger claims. The pickup has the same pass-through doors as the SUV as well as the same frunk measuring 14 cubic feet.
Besides a gas tank, you’ll notice a few other things are missing. The truck seats only four people, and if it’s anything like the B1, you won’t find modern accoutrements like a big touchscreen or soft dashboard panels. Oh, and Bollinger says the final vehicles won’t have airbags, but they’ll be engineered “to safety standards that exceed federal regulations using seat belts.”
Pricing hasn’t been announced yet. The B1 and B2 will enter production on the same assembly line in 2020. Buyers can reserve a B1 or B2 on Bollinger’s website.

The electric off-road pickup of your dreams
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=5009&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr Electric car startup Bollinger on Wednesday gave us our first look at a rugged, all-electric pickup truck currently in the works. The truck is called the Bollinger B2, and it’s a sister vehicle to Bollinger’s B1 SUV first shown in 2017. While the B1 can also be configured with a bed, the B2 is a much larger vehicle designed for serious loads. It features a patented pass-through door for transporting long items, and there’s also storage space under the hood due to the lack of an engine. Storage was a priority when designing the B2. The bed is more than 4.0 feet wide and almost 6.0 feet long. The rear glass also opens up like the B1, allowing storage to the top of the cab. Bollinger confirmed the B2, like the B1, will be classified a Class 3 truck, meaning a 10,001 gross vehicle weight rating and a hauling capability of 5,000 pounds. Bollinger B1 and B2 Also like the B1, the B2 features a flat battery pack in the floor and an electric motor at each axle for all-wheel drive. The company is holding back on most specs since development isn’t complete but did say a massive 120-kilowatt-hour battery can be fitted. The B2 will also come with Citroën-style hydropneumatic suspension and in-wheel portal gear hubs for a smooth ride, even when off-road. Bollinger is currently accepting orders for both the B1 and B2 and hopes to have production up and running in 2020. The company, which recently moved from New York to Michigan, said it plans to reveal key details on availability and pricing in 2019. “The new B2 incorporates everything that we’ve learned in making the B1, and takes it in an exciting new direction,” Bollinger founder Robert Bollinger said. “Now that we have so much incredible data from testing our B1 prototype, we can put all of that engineering knowledge into our final four-door B1 and B2 vehicles.” Bollinger isn’t alone in the race to deliver an electric pickup truck. Tesla has also confirmed plans for an electric pickup truck, and electric startups Rivian and Workhorse are working on pickups of their own. Probably none of these will have the utilitarian aesthetic of the Bollinger, however. It’s almost like a Volkswagen Thing of the modern era. Via MotorAuthority
