The 2023 Genesis G90 is a highly appealing and more affordable alternative to more expensive full-size German luxury sedans. It enters an all-new generation for 2023. Pricing starts at $88,400.
SUVs are becoming ubiquitous, but there are still a few options for drivers looking for a full-size, flagship luxury sedan. The Genesis G90 is one of the most competitive players in this shrinking class, and it goes toe-to-toe with longtime class leaders like the BMW BMW, +1.09% 7 Series, Audi A8, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The G90 has a unique design that turns heads, and the interior is spacious and supremely luxurious. This Korean-built luxury sedan is available in two configurations. The base model is loaded with Nappa leather seats, a twin-turbo V8, and a digital gauge cluster. The upper trim adds features like an electric supercharger, reclining and massaging rear seats, and air suspension.

2023 Genesis G90 pricing
The base model of the 2023 Genesis G90 starts at $88,400, and the upper trim with the E-Supercharger begins at $98,700. A $1,095 destination fee applies to all G90 models.
The G90 isn’t cheap, but it’s a more affordable alternative to the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Driving the 2023 Genesis G90
As of this writing, we haven’t yet driven the all-new Genesis G90. We’ve been impressed by its twin-turbo V6 in other Genesis models, and we look forward to testing it with the available electric supercharger.
The ride quality promises to be supple yet controlled, thanks to the G90’s standard electronically controlled suspension with Road Preview. It should be even better with the optional multi-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering.
Interior comfort
The interior of the Genesis G90 is spacious and luxurious. There’s lots of legroom in both rows of seats, with plenty of room for the rear-seat passengers to stretch out. The interior design justifies the price tag, and the quality of the materials is top-notch.
Standard interior features include Nappa leather seating, matte-finish wood trim, a microfiber suede headliner, heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats with power bolsters, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, 3-zone climate control, power rear sunshades, a head-up display, and a wireless charging pad.
The standard infotainment system is a 12.3-inch screen complemented by a digital gauge cluster the same size. It’s loaded with navigation, Android Auto, Apple AAPL, +0.23% CarPlay, SiriusXM SIRI, +0.34%, HD Radio, and a Bang & Olufsen BGOUF, -11.50% audio system.
The upper trim gets more luxurious inside with a 3D audio system, a rear center console with touchscreen controls and wireless charging, plus ventilated, reclining, and massaging rear seats.

Exterior styling
The 2023 Genesis G90 has a striking exterior design that won’t blend in with the crowd. Some of this luxury car’s rivals are good if you’re looking for subtlety, but if you want a premium sedan that stands out, the G90 can’t be ignored.
The G90 is the biggest sedan in the Genesis lineup. It’s a full-size sedan with dimensions similar to those of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, and Lexus LS.

Favorite features
1. Available E-Supercharger The optional electric supercharger is a welcome addition to the twin-turbo V6 under the hood of the G90. It boosts performance with an extra 34 horsepower and 14 lb-ft of torque over the base engine with only a slight penalty in fuel economy.
2. Virtual Venues Live This enhanced audio system is a virtual, 3D-surround sound function optimized for different types of music. It has settings like Boston Symphony Hall and Bang & Olufsen Home, replicating the sound quality of real-life venues to make the most out of the 26-speaker sound system.
3. Opulent rear seats The front seats in the G90 are supremely comfortable, but the rear seats are arguably an even better place to be. Nappa leather seating is standard, and the upper trim of the G90 adds heated, ventilated, massaging, and reclining rear seats, plus a rear center console with touchscreen controls and a wireless charging pad.
4. Mood Curator This standard feature allows your passengers to set the mood in the G90 with themes like Vitality, Delight, Care, and Comfort. It enables integrated control of ambient lighting, the sound system, the fragrance system, seat massagers, and power sunshades to create different ambient environments.

6. Highway Driving Assist II This standard semi-autonomous driving system makes highway driving safer and more relaxed by combining features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and road sign assist.

Engine and transmission
The base engine in the 2023 Genesis G90 is a powerful twin-turbocharged V6. It produces more power and torque than the base V6 in the outgoing G90 while returning better fuel economy.
The V8 in the outgoing G90 is no longer available. In its place is a twin-turbo V6 equipped with an electric supercharger. It improves performance without only a slight hit to the fuel economy.
Every G90 has an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

L’inspirante Cadillac CT4-V !

Comme je l’ai annoncé la semaine dernière après mon essai de la Cadillac CT5-V, cette semaine sera une suite logique du reportage de la semaine dernière alors que je vous transmets mes impressions sur la Cadillac CT4-V. Mais avant de débuter, telle ne fut pas ma surprise de lire l’article d’un jeune journaliste que je respecte concernant la CT4 dans un grand journal montréalais de dimanche. Il considère la CT4 une de ses grandes déceptions de 2020.
Malgré tout le respect que je lui dois, je me demande si nous avons conduit la même voiture. Car, dans mon cas, j’ai été enchanté de la CT4 dans sa version de performance V. Il faut dire que j’en suis l’évolution depuis son dévoilement à Detroit il y a deux ans! De plus, j’ai conduit l’auto pendant une semaine tout de suite après la CT5. Plus ironique encore, je ne suis pas nécessairement un amateur de Cadillac (je possède deux Lincoln) et qui plus est, je suis de l’âge où l’on devrait rechercher des Cadillac! Mais, je vous le dis tout de suite, ce n’est pas la Caddy qui aurait fait rêver votre père, ni même votre grand-père!
Au départ, il faut dire que cette petite berline de Cadillac a toute une tâche à accomplir. En effet, elle est la seule de souche nord-américaine à se mesurer à des icônes comme les Mercedes-Benz de Classe A, les Audi A3 ou les BMW de la Série 2. Évidemment, elle n’affiche pas le style de ces voitures européennes mais plutôt un style bien à elle quoique inspiré des autres Cadillac. On y voit même des ressemblances étonnantes avec la CT5. Mais les deux autos sont vraiment différentes. Toutefois, rassurez-vous, cette fois, Cadillac n’a pas répété son erreur des Cimarron des années quatre-vingt (des horribles autos basées sur une coque de Cavalier sans grande finition!). Déjà, je dois vous dire que c’est même mieux que les ATS qui les précédaient. Cependant, vous aurez compris que la direction que Cadillac prend avec ses versions V (incluant la finition Blackwing à venir) est inspirée des exploits en course de la grande marque américaine. Encore le weekend dernier, Cadillac a remporté le trophée du constructeur de l’année de la série IMSA Weather Tech Sports Car Challenge avec ses prototypes à moteur V8 central! Les CTS du passé ont aussi écumé les circuits routiers américains il y a quelques années dans les divisions de voitures de production (saviez-vous que Cadillac avait déjà participé aux 24 Heures du Mans au début des années cinquante?).

Je vous laisse juger de vous-mêmes des lignes de la CT4-V. Moi, je les trouve modernes sans les exagérations que l’on voit sur certaines autos asiatiques. Elles représentent bien l’ADN de Cadillac sans obligatoirement copier ce qui se fait ailleurs.

Plusieurs observateurs ont noté que l’intérieur de la CT4 manque de panache. Jusqu’à un certain point, c’est vrai. Mais cette fois, Cadillac ne nous offre pas un intérieur surchargé de chrome et de faux-bois (ce que ces mêmes observateurs reprochaient à Cadillac dans le passé!). Il est donc sobre mais demeure relativement bien fini. Le tableau de bord n’affiche pas une ligne remarquable mais tout y est bien disposé alors que l’instrumentation (numérique reproduisant des cadrans ronds) y est claire et précise. J’ai bien aimé, encore fois, l’affichage du compteur de vitesse en réflexion à l’intérieur du pare-brise! On peut le neutraliser si l’on n’aime pas! Moi, je trouve que c’est un élément de sécurité important. Le conducteur retrouvera le levier de changements de vitesses à la console (un peu large, je l’avoue).

Les sièges ne sont pas tant élégants qu’ils sont pratiques avec des supports latéraux solides. Ils sont chauffants ou ventilés alors que le volant est chauffant. Et celui-ci permet une bonne prise! Quant aux places arrière, elles sont confortables mais comme c’en est le cas pour toutes (ou presque) les berlines de ce créneau (incluant les sacro-saintes européennes), l’espace pour les jambes des occupants peut être relativement limité (alors que la CT5 procurait beaucoup de place!). Enfin, le coffre est quand même respectable. Évidemment, il s’agrandit en abaissant les dossiers des sièges d’arrière.

En ce qui a trait à la mécanique, la CT4 de base arrive avec un quatre cylindres de 2,0 litres qui n’est certes pas un foudre de guerre. Toutefois, la CT4-V est livrée d’usine avec un quatre cylindres de 2,7 litres turbocompressé (originalement conçu pour la camionnette Silverado mais qui fait très bien dans la petite Cadillac…de tout façon, de nos jours, la plupart des moteurs de camionnettes viennent de voitures et vice versa!) qui développe pas moins de 325 chevaux ce qui n’est pas loin des 360 chevaux de la CT5-V !  La boîte de vitesses auto de la version de base est à huit rapports mais la CT4-V a droit à celle à dix rapports! De base, toutes les CT4 sont à propulsion (ses concurrentes sont à traction) mais la V que j’ai conduite était à traction intégrale, un choix que je crois sera unanime parmi les acheteurs de la marque (et qui sera très utile en hiver). Je ne peux malheureusement pas vous parler de la version Blackwing qui n’est pas encore dévoilée (plusieurs observateurs croient que celle-ci aura l’ancien moteur V6 de 3,6 litres turbocompressé de l’ancienne CTS-V mais moi, je m’attends plutôt au V6 turbo de la CT5-V avec un peu plus de puissance…). La suspension est indépendante aux quatre roues alors que le freinage se fait via des disques aux quatre roues avec la technologie Brembo à l’avant.

Sur la route
C’est ici que mes opinions doivent différer. J’ai conduit les deux Cadillac l’une derrière l’autre. Alors que je n’ai pas été impressionné outre mesure par les 360 chevaux de la CT5-V, le quatre cylindres de la CT4-V m’a beaucoup plu. Ses temps d’accélérations de 0 à 100 km/h approchaient ceux de la CT5 tournant autour des six secondes alors que les reprises étaient plus qu’amusantes. Il est vrai que le son du quatre cylindres est plus rauque que celui du V6 mais le «petit» moteur m’a tellement paru plus vivant, plus agile que je ne peux que le vanter. Incidemment, ce même moteur est beaucoup plus silencieux en vitesse de croisière! Il faut dire que la boîte à dix rapports a beaucoup contribué à la sensation de «sportive» que la CT4-V m’a procurée. Les gros pneus Continental 235/35R19 ont fort probablement contribué à la bonne tenue de route de la CT4-V dans les virages serrés des petites routes où je l’ai essayée. Quant au freinage, inutile de vous dire qu’il m’a paru très puissant !
Au niveau de la consommation, j’ai obtenu une moyenne à la pompe (selon mes calculs) de 10,94 l/100 km alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 10,6! Très près et fort possiblement équivalent à ce que la concurrence m’aurait donné!
Une berline Cadillac CT4 V-Series débute à 45 398$. Celle qui a servi à ce reportage incluait des options comme un toit ouvrant de 1295 $, un ensemble Technologie de 1350 $, une sellerie perforée de 1845 $, une illumination avant d’appoint de 475 $, des étriers de freins Brembo avant de 685 $, des jantes spéciales de 3062 $. Ajoutez à cela l’ensemble audio Bose et le système de navigation de 920 $, l’ensemble d’avertissement Driver Awareness de 925 $ et l’aide à la conduite de 1425 $ (en plus de la taxe d’accise de 100 $ pour la climatisation et les frais de transport et de livraison de 2100 $ et on obtient une facture de 59 580 $ …plus taxes! Ne manquait plus que le système de conduite automatique Super Cruise!
Je suis demeuré avec une bonne impression de cette «petite» voiture que je n’ai pas hésité à recommander à un de mes amis qui y était intéressé (il vise plus la version de base mais avec la traction intégrale). C’est fou comment beaucoup de gens croient qu’il faille éviter les autos américaines pour des raisons quelque fois débattables. Dans le cas de la CT4, surtout dans sa version V, je ne vois pas pourquoi on devrait la dénigrer face à sa concurrence étrangère. Je crois que cette «petite» Cadillac est enfin la bonne réponse de Cadillac à cette concurrence !
À venir, la Kia K5
La semaine dernière, j’ai eu l’opportunité de conduire un peu en «avant-première» la nouvelle berline K5 de Kia, une «grande» voiture intermédiaire qui remplace maintenant la Kia Optima (née Magentis) avec laquelle j’ai couvert quelque centaines de kilomètres durant la même journée. C’était, bien entendu, en vue du vote à l’AJAC pour le titre de Voiture de l’Année (il n’y aura pas eu de TestFest ou Festival des Essais cette année, COVID oblige). J’ai bien aimé ce que j’y ai vécu mais je préfère garder mes opinions pour un reportage après une semaine complète avec cette auto. Ce sera certes pour les semaines à venir…

A couple of months ago I introduced you to a UK company that converts classic cars to electric propulsion. The company, named eDub Services, was founded by a young man named Kit Lacey, and since my piece on his business, he and I have been in conversation about this fascinating field of entrepreneurship. I have an old Volvo 240 in my garage that one day will need an electric drivetrain for sure, so getting acquainted with someone like Kit is a good bet.
I talked to Kit about the concrete and chronological information on his rebuilds and how we could make it accessible for all of us curious about how such projects can be carried out. This series is the result, in Kit Lacey’s own words. So let’s begin at the beginning.
Part 1 — Finding The First Donor Vehicle
It all started with a road trip. All the best ideas do, in my opinion. Driving down the A1 with my mum in the driver’s seat and my wife in the back. The year is 2013. “How hard would it be to convert a camper van to electric?” I ask my mum. “Not too hard,” she replied. … Maybe a strange question to ask, but there is some context.
I am personally the wrong generation to love classic camper vans. I disagree with, but appreciate this observation. Born in 1988, our family never had one. I fell in love with images of them on tea towels and mugs. Plus, spotting one on the motorway on bank holiday travels. My wife and I were married in 2009 and had a splitty camper as our wedding car. It suited us nicely but we never imagined we could ever own one. Like many, it was a dream of ownership but the concern for ‘issues’ also kept my cash in my wallet.
The classic camper vans, VWs up until the late 1980s, were just as famous for breaking down as they were for their looks and charm. I heard stories of AA vans parking outside VW shows to save them making a long journey for a call out. I guess this is why they have such a “hobby shop” following. People forever tinkering and fixing; making new or just patching up the old. Even specifically VW camper vans have a huge industry built around keeping them on the road. Maybe this is what caught my interest as a conversion. These beautiful steel boxes were already set to undergo any transformation. They can be campers, minibuses, ambulances, mobile bars, the list is endless. So, for me, a camper van would be perfect, but which one?
Early campers were iconic. The classic split-screen camper has carried the image of the hippy vibe for over 60 years and it’s still going strong. But they were rare, and expensive, and normally filled with rust. The later “classic,” the T25, fixed a lot of the running issues plagued by the early campers, but we weren’t going to care about “running issues.” Plus, in my opinion, the T25 is a little ugly (send angry letters to my editor). Note from Kit’s first-in-line editor, Jesper: I like the T25 — it’s boxy!
This left us with the perfect T2. 1969–1979. Early or late was no issue to us.
Now, back to the road trip and my mum’s response. She’s a bit more qualified than you might expect. In 2020, (Dr) Gilly Lacey is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Teeside University. Her PhD was The effect of smart grid utilisation on the degradation of an EV battery and she was one of the first in the country to have a Nissan Leaf on trial. As a family, we’ve since gone through 3 Nissan Leafs, 2 BMW i3s, and a Kia e-Niro.
So, back to the camper. After deciding that the plan was a good one, we started the business dimensions. Classic campers are regularly used for hire, so we figured, as a good return on investment, we should run our electric camper for hire. So, to start us off, we needed the following;

We sourced a startup loan to get us started, with a business plan to convert a camper to electric and then hire it out for holidays around Yorkshire. I started a Photo Stream from day one of the project and my first picture was the eDub Logo. The whole plan for eDubs came together very quickly in my mind — from the logo, to the style, to the interior, it all had to be perfect. We budgeted £30,000 ($37,000) and planned a 100 mile range conversion. Follow the series to see how accurate those plans were…
We originally looked for a camper van business for sale. We thought we’d run a few petrol campers for a while to feel out the market, then slowly convert them to electric. We had some good chats with a company on the south coast of the UK that was for sale, but there were disagreements within the business and they didn’t follow through. So we decided to bite the bullet and go all electric with van number 1.
A friend of mine has a mechanic friend who we called to see if he would be interested in the idea of helping us with the conversion. He agreed and we met for a pint at the local pub to talk it through. I always find important decisions like this are best decided over a local Yorkshire pint! So the decision was made to find a van!
Our mechanic was based in a small village near Whitby and found a VW specialist in Sunderland, a few miles north. They had an imported American van that was bought for a customer. The customer had bought the van, gutted it (and I mean gutted!), and then run out of money. So the garage had bought it back and now had it on sale. One phone call later we were on our way up north.

The van was perfect, a perfect shell with nothing in it. It was stripped and primed but nothing else. The engine was removed, so we asked the garage to keep that and in return they reduced the price. It had the windows removed, and in the back, it had a bit of yellow/green interior seating (no thanks). The garage agreed to paint the van and do a left- to right-hand drive conversion for a reduced rate. The papers were signed and we had a van. She was immediately named Indie, as she was from a town called Andrews in Indiana.
Unloading our first project
At eDub Services, we take any form of donor vehicle. We specialise in VW camper vans because we know how they work, and more importantly, know what components fit where! Classic cars deserve to live on for many more generations, and electrification is the way to do that. If you have the vehicle and the dream, we have a conversion pack to suit.
