Get excited for new Toyota models coming in 2020!
The 2019 model year was quite a remarkable year for new Toyota models. This model year we saw a complete redesign of the Toyota Avalon that brought a new face to luxury sport, we saw the arrival of the new N Charlotte Toyota Corolla Hatchback, and a complete reimagining of the Toyota RAV4. While this model year was a good one, the automotive industry waits for no one and it’s about time to welcome the 2020 model year. What to expect from the 2020 model year
2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition
With over 60 years of history under its belt, it’s probably time for a celebration! The N Charlotte new Toyota Land Cruiser is returning for the new model year with a new limited-edition trim level called the Heritage Edition. The special trim option features several unique aesthetic modifications.

With only an image of the top half of the front end and a video showcasing four-way adjustable power seats, the Toyota Tacoma is wrapped in mystery. It’s set to be fully unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on February 7th.
2020 Toyota Corolla
It’s a new year and it’s time for another reimagining. The little crown is returning with a new look, inspired by the Corolla Hatchback. The inside and outside feature a clean and sporty flow with new comfortable materials and clean lines. This model year is also the first in the Corolla’s history to get a hybrid model.

2023 Nissan Maxima: The Next-Gen Nissan Maxima Review
2023 Nissan Maxima You may know the Nissan Maxima as a bland sedan brand, destined to become a fleet car for rental companies or taxi services. Over the years, the car did have a few decent versions, among them the SR, which was supposed to be a sportier variant of the mediocre front-wheel-drive mid-size sedan.

To make matters worse, the Maxima dropped the manual option in 2008 and, since then, the powerful 3.5-liter V-6 has had to work with the crippled CVT unit. However, the Nissan Maxima 2023 has the potential to be an attractive proposition. This is the reason.
It was initially believed that the current eighth-generation Maxima would be discontinued sometime in the next two years. This belief was further strengthened by the decline in sales of large sedans, in response to increasing demand for crossovers and SUVs. However, the data shows that not all car owners join the SUV/crossover.
For example, 42 percent of Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze owners do not upgrade to a high-riding vehicle. Instead, they choose another similar vehicle from another automaker, which is often a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.
Despite the crossover/SIV craze, sedans, whether they're compact, mid-size, or full-size, still make up a sizeable percentage of the automotive market. In addition, the sedan has become more versatile than ever. So, how is the Nissan Maxima related?
Maxima hasn't been offered in Europe, for almost two decades, but this may change. Given that compact sedans have become bigger than ever, certain models have become obsolete.
For example, Toyota discontinued the Avensis, positioned above the Corolla, in favor of a smaller Corolla (not much smaller nowadays). This in turn leaves room for larger models, which is why the Toyota Camry returned to the European market in 2018, after a long absence.
This means that the 2023 Nissan Maxima could once again become a global model. Plus, the Maxima has already gone through a mid-cycle refresh, in 2019, so you can bet it'll be around for a longer time. Hopefully not as long as the GT-R and 370Z.
According to the Motor1 article, 2022 could also spawn a fully electric version of the Nissan Maxima. However, that probably won't happen until 2025, when the model is rumored to be undergoing a complete redesign.
The current generation Nissan Maxima looks a bit sportier and more distinctive than the previous generation, some of which have a very conservative styling. If the Maxima 2023 is indeed influenced by the Nissan V-Motion concept, this means a more futuristic and sporty interpretation of the current design.
The Maxima could also be a four-door coupe or liftback (hatchback) in some corners, similar to the Kia Stinger or Fastback Peugeot 508. However, this will most likely happen after 2025.
One thing is for sure, the Maxima has become a pretty fast car, even with a CVT. The 0 to 60 mph time of the current generation is 5.7 seconds and on a good day, the Maxima proves it can run with the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R.
For the engine, the Maxima is expected to still use the 3.5-liter VQ35DE V-6 engine, which has the potential to produce a little power. A prize, the engine produces 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet (354 Nm).
Maxima's biggest weak point is the gearbox, which is a CVT. While it's great for fuel economy, it doesn't quite match the pretensions of a sportier car.
This is the bad news. While Nissan currently has options when it comes to automatic transmission options, the 2023 model could still feature a CVT gearbox. Nissan did come with a heavy-duty toroidal CVT that has a greater torque capacity, but it might only be featured on pick-up trucks and SUVs. We still think the Maxima should have a manual option or at least a proper automatic like the Mercedes-derived nine-speed automatic.
Now, more than ever, it makes sense for the Nissan Maxima to, once again, become a global model. With Nissan's current pricing strategy, the Japanese sporty sedan has the potential to generate great value for money, not only in the North American market but globally as well.
However, the CVT had to go if the Maxima wanted to reenact its sporty character. While the Nissan Maxima 2023 is partly a mystery, we'll likely get more of the same, until a complete redesign comes out, in 2025.

品牌即戰力!2020台北車展CarStuff點名必看新車

兩年一度2020台北車展,各家車廠精銳盡出,尤其是被視為即戰力的全新車款更是焦點,同時也是預覽明年新車佈局的最好時機,而本屆台北車展又有哪些重點新車等著上陣呢,就讓CarStuff先幫你點名吧!
Aston Martin DBX
休旅車當道,就連高端品牌也沒有例外,現在終於輪到紳士的愛牌Aston Martin,品牌首款休旅車DBX甫於11月下旬在中國北京全球首演,隨即台灣總代理永三汽車的積極爭取之下也空降2020台北車展。
Aston Martin DBX採用品牌旗下GT車型的高強度鋁合金車架結構,兼具輕量化與高剛性,總車重僅2,245KG,車身尺碼為5039x1998x1680mm,軸距為3060mm。在外型設計上揉雜品牌經典識別與創新元素,並且秉持對於達文西「黃金比例」的要求,打造出近乎完美的跑旅。車頭標誌性「DB」格柵與蚌式引擎蓋,保留Aston Martin一貫美學堅持,俐落感全橫幅尾燈設計,則來自於品牌另一當家車款Vantage。
DBX在內裝的選材上也發揮極大創意,除了以精巧的金屬、玻璃和木材為鑲嵌主調外,更選用80%純羊毛製作的特殊面料與新型亞麻複合材料飾板鑲嵌,帶來獨特別致的美感。10.25英吋全液晶中控銀幕與中控台設計完美融合,另外Apple CarPlay、360°環景攝影及64色車室氛圍燈皆為標準備配。後車廂容量為632升,後排座椅可依照40:20:40比例折疊,確保靈活的空間運用。
DBX搭載4.0升V8雙渦輪增壓引擎,是源自於與Mercedes-AMG技術合作,目前已廣泛應用於旗下車款,像是DB11與Vantage皆是以此為動力單元,擁有550 PS / 700 Nm狂暴輸出,比起DB11與Vantage設定的510 PS來的高,成為品牌性能最悍的V8引擎,0-100 km/h加速亦僅需4.5秒,極速可達291km/h。
Audi Q8
Audi旗艦運動休旅Q8於2018年中正式發表,睽違一年多之後終於在台亮相。車頭最醒目的是八邊形水箱護罩,並透過六根柱形飾條點綴,讓前視造型盡顯霸氣侵略氣息,充滿力量地勾勒出全車運動化風格,尤其於車尾更承襲1980年代經典的ur-quattro跑車的寬車體(可容納到22吋寬幅輪胎)以及傾斜C柱的設計,讓Audi Q8跳脫傳統SUV框架。
Q8的車身尺碼為4,986×1,995×1,705米以及達2995mm的軸距(比Q7的1968mm車寬與2994mm軸距略為加大),車室空間相當寬敞。當後排座椅傾倒時,605公升行李箱容量可一舉擴充至1,755公升,兼具強大的空間機能。
車艙設計採取新世代大面積透明面板按鈕極簡化的直覺設計,Q8車室內共有3具螢幕,其一為12.3吋新一代Audi Virtual Cockpit虛擬數位座艙駕駛儀錶,並可於方向盤上切換兩種視覺模式,且具備快捷鍵可執行語音聲控、接聽電話...等多項功能,另外2具則是中控台上下10.1吋與8.6吋雙觸控螢幕,並搭載最新一代MMI系統。
Q8的動力系統將會有 3.0 升 V6 渦輪增壓動力,汽柴油都有,55TFSI 的汽油版本,最大輸出為340hp / 51kgm,而50TDI 柴油版本則為286hp / 63.2kgm,兩者皆會導入 48V 微型油電系統,當然引以為傲的quattro四驅系統也會伴隨Q8,一般的行駛狀況下提供前軸40%;後軸60%的非對稱動力分配比例,並根據不同之路況變化可在最短時間內自動將動力分配至前/後軸,同時Audi Q8標配附阻尼調整的懸吊系統,讓駕駛可依據自身的喜好的駕駛模式,而有不一樣的駕駛操控樂趣。
BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe
睽違20年之後,BMW旗艦跑車8-Series Coupe於2018年回歸,而2019年產品線再擴張推出8系列Gran Coupe美型四門轎跑。
與Coupe車型相比,8 GC的外型很明顯有很不同的尾部設計,而突顯出更寬大的後部寬車體造型。其軸距為3,023 mm比8系列雙門車型特別增加了201 mm,來創造出更寬敞的後座空間。其他部分也都有所增加,車長為5,082 mm(+231 mm),車寬為1,932 mm(+30 mm),車高則為1,407 mm (+61 mm)。而前輪距寬度為1,627 mm,與雙門車型相同;但1,671 mm的後輪距則是寬了28 mm,為目前BMW全車系中最寬的後輪距。
8 GC配置4+1的五人座設置,後排座椅同樣提供出色的橫向支撐以及整體式頭枕,讓後座乘客也能享有跑車殺彎的刺激感覺。後座中央有專用的中控檯區隔左右,雖然中央位置看起來不太適合成人乘坐,但還是配有完整的安全帶配置。
汎德展出的車型為M850i xDrive Gran Coupe,輕量化的的車身與強勁的4.4升TwinPower Turbo V型8汽缸引擎,使之擁有530hp / 750 Nm最大動力輸出,搭配搭載了八速Steptronic運動型自排變速箱,0-100km/h加速僅需3.9秒即可達陣,更同時配備xDrive智慧型可變四輪傳動系統與整合式主動轉向系統,使BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe擁有更為迷人的駕馭樂趣,重新定義豪華四門跑車級距。
Ford Explorer Interceptor Utility
福特六和早在2018年的媒體春酒上,就曾宣佈將建構更完善的SUV產品線,其中Explorer就是預計導入的主角之一,不過由於當時Explorer正值產品末期,因此這項原定計畫也就此順延,而隨著新世代Explorer於2019年初發表後,本屆台北車展這項計劃再度重啟,只不過福特六和打算先賣個關子,特別引進Explorer Interceptor Utility警車版本,但其實標準版也就是蛻下警車外衣罷了。
為了傳遞美國文化,Ford展區以代表美式精神的美國66號公路為主題,以公路大道、休息站、美式大型看板及霓虹燈元素,神重現公路城鎮的經典樣貌,並以美式鄉村酒吧概念鋪陳客戶洽談區,提供美式特色餐飲小點,打造沉浸式體驗展區,所以才會以Explorer Interceptor Utility警車版展出。
Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility美式特警車汲取與執法單位近 70 年的合作經驗全新開發,並為首款通過美執法單位道路追捕測試(Pursuit-Rated)的警用SUV,也是全球僅見能耐受後方達120.7 km/h(70-mph)追撞的警用SUV。
為因應美式警車值勤時期怠速閒置的狀況, Explorer Police Interceptor Utility美式特警車搭載的3.3升 V6 Hybrid油電混合動力系統,極為適合警方執法工作,車上電子配備以鋰電池模組驅動,因此不需長時間發動汽油引擎,只有在電池需要充電時才需間歇性發動,同時提升油耗表現,亦標配四輪驅動系統,在任何環境下皆能展現操控穩定性及循跡性。
Hyundai Palisada
Palisade 是取代 Santa Fe 三排規格(Maxicruz)的全新全尺寸 SUV 車款,同時也是以 HDC2 Grandmaster Concept 為藍本、針對北美市場推出的頂級 LSUV 車型。而為了大型 SUV 市場的需求,南陽實業也準備在本次車展展這款目前海外 Hyundai 品牌的旗艦車款。
Palisade 實車大量沿用 HDC-2 Grandmaster 的‘Sensuous Sportiness 設計語彙,車身尺碼也相當「巨大」,長4980mm X 寬1976mmm X 高1750mm,軸距則為 2900mm,風阻係數相當低僅有0.33Cd 而已;車頭相當的霸氣,具備大型矩陣式六角形水箱罩設計,內網採用鱗片狀並搭配鍍鉻裝飾。而前大燈組採用分離式樣 LED 設計,比起 Santa Fe 的造型更顯前衛。
內裝部分 Palisade 採用與 Santa Fe 類似的海灣造型,10.25吋觸控螢幕與12.3吋數位儀表板相當顯眼,座艙採用三排座八人設定,第二排座椅可電動調整前移/傾斜,第三排座椅同樣可以傾斜並具有動力折疊/展開功能。
動力系統上,Palisade 採用 Lambda 3.8 V6 自然進氣引擎,最大馬力 291 hp/6,000 rpm 、最大扭力為 36.2kgm/ 5,200 rpm。搭配八速自動變速箱。另外這次 Palisade 也刻意針對 HTRAC 四輪驅動系統進行強化,將 Drive mode 整合於 Multi Terrain Control 系統,擁有普通、運動、智能、沙地、泥濘與新開發的Snow模式等,搭配中央差速器鎖定,讓 Palisade 面對崎嶇路況也難不倒它。
Lexus LM300h
Lexus在今年4月上海車展發表品牌首款MPV車型LM300h,成為繼旗艦級豪華轎車LS、旗艦級豪華GT轎跑LC、全尺寸豪華SUV LX和豪華遊艇LY之後推出的第五款旗艦產品。雖然怎麼看就是Toyota Alphard的高級版,但在Lexus的日式工藝與豪奢的包裝下,儼然就是一輛陸上頭等艙,勢必能吸引不少大老闆入手,甚至能上打1A2B的旗艦代表。
LM提供四人座及七人座予買家選擇,四人座車型採用後座獨立空間設計,車室內高度達1,350mm、後座座椅中心至隔層屏風更達驚人的1,150mm,不僅如此,後座椅採用雙獨立按摩座椅,並用採用Semi-Aniline頂級真皮及記憶海綿,傲視所有同級競品。
LM在設計上非常細膩,設想買家可能的種種需求,為打造絕佳隱私空間,前座與後座間隔層導入設計靈感源自中國傳統屏風的玻璃隔屏,具備電動升降及調節透光度功能,可依需求調整後座隱密性。四人座車型還配有史無前例的26吋大螢幕,可與手機及平板連接並支援藍光播放,屏風及螢幕下方還有容量達14公升的小冰箱。從按摩椅調整、大螢幕、空調及音響系統等皆可由中央扶手上的觸控螢幕調整。聽覺上也配備Mark Levinson頂級音響系統及19支揚聲器,輔以雙層降噪玻璃,實現完美視聽覺饗宴。
台灣市場因為油耗表現因素,與中國市場採用相同的 LM300h ,與目前日本 Alphard/Vellfire Hybrid 的動力規格相同,也就是 2.5 HYBRID THSII 動力系統總成,汽油引擎最大馬力及扭力分別是152ps及206Nm,配合同步交流電動馬達,縱效馬力達到211Ps、縱效扭力 409Nm,匹配E-CVT變速箱。
Peugeot 208 & 2008
Peugeot總代理寶嘉聯合本屆台北車展上連袂發表第二世代208與2008,掀背小獅208是在2019日內瓦車展上問世,而跨界休旅2008則在6月發表,兩者採用PSA集團專用於小車的CMP平台打造,208車身尺碼來到4,055×1,745×1,430mm,軸距為2,540mm,而2008則落在4,299×1,700×1,540mm,軸距來到2600mm。
全新的 208與2008外觀都換上新世代設計,重點都是擺脫過往可愛的身型,變得更加帥氣許多,尤其車頭銳利三組 LED 大燈組搭配左右二側類似「利牙」的日行燈組,中間網格型水箱罩搭配「2008」字體,更具活力、同時也充滿殺氣。

ADAS系統方面也全面補齊,包含Stop&Go 全速域 ACC 主動巡航系統、LPA 車道保持輔助系統等,使其具備Level 2 等級的半自動駕駛功能,其他像是LKA 車道維持輔助系統、可偵測行人/自行車AEB自動煞停輔助、DAM 駕駛人注意力監控系統、AHB 自動大燈調整系統、TSR 交通標誌識別、BSM盲點偵測與 EBD 電子手煞車等都名列其中。

Porsche 935
台灣保時捷這次特別展出全球限量77台的Porsche 935複刻經典賽車,這部賽車以991.2世代911 GT2 RS高性能跑車為基礎打造,足以應付Clubsport的賽車聚會以及個人賽訓的需求。承襲上一代車型戰功彪炳的歷史紀錄,絕大部分車體以碳纖維複合材料(CFRP)打造。加上車尾延伸的流線設計,使得Porsche 935總長來到4.87m,車寬達2.03m的水準。
優異的空氣動力工程,不只是項嶄新的技術,同時也是向當年利曼大賽上的 Porsche 935/78跑車致敬,而粉絲也以文學名著中「白鯨記」裡的大白鯨莫比迪克(Moby Dick)來戲稱這台有著流利的線條,大型整流罩,白色基底塗裝的跑車。獨特的前輪拱更整合了與911 GT3相同的整流罩以增加前軸的下壓力,而1,909mm寬,縱深達400mm的後尾翼也為車子提供絕佳的空力平衡。

Skoda Scala
因為WLTP的關係,Skoda Taiwan原定今年抵台的全新掀背車款Scala被迫順延至2020台北車展才亮相,未來也將取代Rapid / Rapid Spaceback 車型。
Scala是Skoda第一款基於福斯集團MQB-A0平台打造的新車,尺碼為長4362mm X 寬1793mm X 高1471mm、軸距2649 mm,比起現行Rapid Spaceback更長、更寬、更高,空間表現甚至相當接近Octavia,因為其後座膝部空間與Octavia相同都是73mm,後座臂展長度為1,425mm,與Octavia的1,449mm相去不遠,而後座頭部982mm小勝Octavia 2mm,至於Scala的行李廂空間為467L,將後排座椅放倒後可擴大至1,410L。
內裝設計也跟進數位化趨勢,可以選配10.25 吋數位駕駛儀錶板以外,並提供6.5吋 / 8吋 / 9.2吋中央觸控螢幕的選配,並提供相當全面的主被動安全系統。
動力部分,目前在歐洲市場提供3汽1柴的組合,汽油引擎方面包含95 ps及115 ps兩種輸出的1.0 TSI渦輪增壓引擎,旗艦動力則是150 ps的1.5 TSI渦輪增壓引擎;柴油部分則是1.6 TDI,具備115 ps / 25.5kgm最大動力輸出。台灣未來引進的規格應該會以汽油為主,將會預計在2020年農曆年過後在台正式發表時,就會揭曉。
Toyota Corolla Touring Sports
Toyota 近年來對於推展新客群相當積極,尤其時常會在車展上導入新車型進行市調,像是 Sienta、iQ 等車型都曾經空運來台過。而這次台北車展上和泰汽車也從歐洲空運一款全新世代的 Corolla Touring Sports 旅行車,將作為未來是否導入台灣市場的依據。
Toyota Corolla Touring Sports 全車造型與 Hatchback 版本一模一樣,差異較大的當然就是B柱後的造型以及行李箱空間,無論是使用機能或是空間都比 Hatchback 車型放大不少,這都有賴軸距比起掀背車型長60mm(2640mm)來到2700mm,以及標準598公升裝載空間,如此一來也能解決掀背車型被人詬病的後座空間狹小問題。
動力系統目前空運來台的規格還不確定,但如果依照歐洲市場編成來看,會有現行 1.2升直列四缸渦輪增壓引擎(最大馬力116匹馬力)以及 C-HR 車上的 1.8 直列四缸+電動馬達所組成的混合動力系統(綜效馬力122匹馬力),以及全新的 2.0 Dynamic Force Engine 所結合的新型混合動力系統(綜效馬力180匹馬力)。變速箱部分則導入 Direct Shift-CVT 與新的六速手排系統。
底盤部分全新的 GA-C 平台受惠於引擎安裝高度低、座椅臀部拉低以及放置於後排座椅下方的鎳氫電池組設定,不管是掀背車或是旅行車的車身重心都降低10mm,同時車身鋼性比起 Auris Touring Sports 強上60%。加上採用前麥花臣、後多連桿懸吊系統,以及刻意針對旅行車配重重新設定的運動化避震器也是與掀背車型不同的地方;高階運動版本更導入 AVS 可變阻尼懸吊系統,讓 Corolla Touring Sports 的操控性往上提升。

2020 Nissan Versa Review: Safer, Smoother, Still-Affordable Small Sedan
The 2020 Nissan Versa has more safety features, a better ride, and 40 mpg highway fuel efficiency in the just-shipped third generation of this subcompact sedan. The Versa feels more substantial and polished. It’s adequate on the interstate. The car has been lowered, widened, and lengthened, which makes it look sleeker (think baby Altima) at the expense of rear-seat room. The trunk, however, is huge. Nissan is banking on the apparent trend of millennials away from what their parents drove, meaning SUVs, toward sedans.
The changes make the 2020 Versa a reasonable contender. It’s no longer just a car shopped on price against subcompacts from Chevrolet, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota. Only the Versa sedan continues for 2020; the hatchback Versa Note goes away. If you want a Versa hatchback / SUV, it’s called the Nissan Kicks and is about $2,500 more, comparably equipped.
On the Road With the Nissan Versa
I spent a week with the Versa recently: a day in crowded Manhattan, a weekend tailgating and foliage-watching in New York State’s Finger Lakes, and several days driving suburban New York-New Jersey. The Versa is easy to park in the big city and would be better still if it had Nissan’s highly regarded Around View system of exterior cameras with a 360-degree birds-eye view. (Maybe in a year, Nissan hints.) The car is most at home on local roads. But once you get it up to highway speed, it’s a fairly quiet ride with great seats that Nissan dubs Zero Gravity. As with any small car, the short wheelbase (103 inches on a 175-inch car) means highway expansion strips are more noticeable. The driver assists (below) make highway driving a bit more effortless.
The 1.6-liter front-drive engine and continuously variable transmission are willing but engineered to return high mpg over tire-smoking performance. I clicked off 0-60 mph times of 9-10 seconds. Stomp the throttle hard and there was a bit of turbo-lag sensation — a second or two of hesitant progress while the engine room spooled up to full power — in a car that has no turbocharger. But 18-wheelers that take 25 to 100 seconds to reach 60 mph get onto highways safely every day.
Nissan rates the “Xtronic” Versa CVT at 32 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, 35 mpg combined. Driving 300 miles of interstate and 50 miles of 55 mph rural highway, I came out very close to that 40 mpg. When I ran 10- to 20-mile legs on more-or-less flat interstate road at 60-65 mph, I got closer to 45 mpg. This is a new 1.6-liter, 16-valve engine with 122 hp (12 percent more than the old Versa) and 114 pound-feet of torque (a 7 percent increase) that doesn’t peak until 4,000 rpm, which may account for the initial slow liftoff.
Those grandly named Zero Gravity seats are comfortable. They’d be a little better with adjustable lumbar support. The driver’s left leg is pushed back a bit by the wheel arch and you notice it on longer runs.
A 7-inch LCD in the instrument panel provides infotainment, phone, trip and safety alerts. Here, it shows the car is on or near the right lane marking. The triangle adjacent lights up when there’s a car in your blind spot and you flick the turn signal.
Nissan Versa Trim Lines
The 2020 Nissan Versa has one engine, one transmission (two on the cheapest model), one body style (sedan; no hatchback), and three trim lines, or model variants. All models are front-drive only, no sunroof. Normally the cheapest trim line accounts for a small fraction of sales. Here, the top seller is the base trim, says Jordan Savage, a senior planner for Nissan. Pay attention to what you do and don’t get on the base trim line, especially if you’re buying for a newer or younger driver who would benefit from the safety assists while they’re building skills and — sadly — convinced they can text and nothing will happen.
Nissan Versa S, $17,295 including $895 shipping. Every Versa including the S gets a 7-inch center console touchscreen LCD, three USB ports, four audio speakers, Bluetooth audio, push-button start, and hill start assist. The S has 15-inch steel wheels and 185/65R15 all-season tires. There is Siri Eyes Free and Google Assistant Voice Recognition.
With the Versa S entry model (only), there’s an even less expensive five-speed manual transmission version available for just $14,730 — “look, a Versa under $15,000″— plus $895 shipping, or $15,625 – $1,670 less than the CVT equivalent model. But fuel economy is less: 27/35/30.
With either transmission, Versa S safety features include pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, and auto high beams. Lane departure warning warns but does not pull the car back if you cross a lane marker, nor does it self-center.

Versa SV, $18,535.The SV adds steering wheel controls, voice recognition, NissanConnect telematics with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, a driver (only) armrest, heated side mirrors, and 16-inch aluminum wheels with 205/55R16 all-season tires.
Additional safety features are blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert (Nissan calls it Safety Shield 360), a drowsy driver alert, and a rear door alert that warns you to check for kids and pets when you get out.
Versa SR 1.6 Xtronic $19,135 / $19,435 with Convenience Package. The SR adds remote engine start, automatic climate control, nicer seat fabric, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, six-speaker audio, and 17-inch alloys with 205/50R17 all-season tires. Also, the parking brake button is now chrome.
Additional SR safety features are LED low and high beam headlamps and LED fog lights. The SR Convenience Package is a must-have at $300: full-range adaptive cruise control and heated front seats. The ACC goes down to 0 mph and back to speed, but after 3-5 seconds at a traffic light, it disengages the brake beeps and creeps forward. ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s Level 2 autonomous system, is not on the Versa.
The 2020 Nissan Versa is more attractive with its lower roofline and less chunky silhouette.
Should You Buy?
The Versa has always been one of the most affordable new cars offered in recent years. Now it has a wide advantage in safety features over the key competition, especially Kia and Hyundai. The interior is much nicer than before and driving dynamics are vastly improved. Rear seat legroom drops 6 inches, from fantastic-for-a-small-car to competitive. Through three quarters of 2019, Versa sales in the US were about 57,000, best among subcompact sedans. (Two subcompact crossover/hatchback semi-competitors, Kia Soul and Honda HR-V, sold better.)
Subcompacts, those under 170 to 175 inches long, are a relatively small market because compact cars (Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra) start just a couple thousand dollars more. Some subcompacts are hatchback-only or have hatchback and sedan variants, so total US sales for subcompact sedans may be a quarter-million this year. The Toyota Yaris, a rebadged Mazda2 (that is no longer sold in the US) is the best-handling small car. The Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, and Chevrolet Sonic are also good vehicles. So is the Honda Fit, late in its model life; the next-generation Fit launches soon but it may not come to the US, in part because the similar Honda HR-V small SUV outsells the Fit 2-1. Other subcompacts include the Mitsubishi Mirage, Volkswagen Beetle and Golf, Fiat 500 / 500L, and Chevrolet Spark.
If you’re buying for safety and you’re shopping the Versa, bypass the Versa S for the SV, which is $1,670 extra. And if safety is your top concern, then the right choice is the Versa SR with the adaptive cruise control package. Look at Nissan Kicks as well.  It does not look anything like the SUVs the parents drove you around in. Either Versa or Kicks is a good deal.

Its lines are angular, octagonal, and futuristic—which is proper visual communication for a 300-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain with a manufacturer-claimed 31-mile battery-only range and an eMPG around 107. If you think the Volvo XC40 is cool, re-set your cool meter.
Renault Clio
Shared on the small-car platform with Nissan and Mitsubishi, the redesigned Clio is a Versa that went to finishing school. Whereas the Versa screams downmarket rental car, the Clio shows that small doesn’t have to mean cheap. From the digitized instrument panel and iPad-sized center stack infotainment system, to the soft-cushion control buttons, swings, and rheostats, the Clio is the Versa that Nissan should make.
Dacia Duster
Whatever happened to the inexpensive, go-anywhere SUV? With the departure of the Nissan Xterra, and the price appreciation of the Jeep Wrangler, there’s an opening for an economical “real” SUV sold to people who don’t mind that the interior looks ripped from a 1990s parts bin. Built by Renault’s Romania-based budget brand, the Duster is a proper 4×4 with a differential lock and hill descent control. Probably a bit wheezy for American roads, the Duster offers a 1.3-liter gasoline turbo generating 148 hp and 184 lb-ft in its top trim. But the British press has raved about it, and with a price point that translates into the mid-$20,000 range, it could be a bargain.
Suzuki Jimny
Ah, poor Suzuki. It couldn’t hang on in the U.S. market, especially as its Vitara now resembles a Range Rover Evoque on a budget. But even if Suzuki had stuck it out, it’s a long shot that its Jimny micro-SUV would have made it here. Its wee 1.5-liter engine puts out a meager 102 hp and 96 lb-ft, with a top speed of 86 mph. And its interior is a bit Playskool. But it has a legitimate 4H/4L transfer case. And geez is it ever cute.
Honda e Prototype
How many e’s are there in “Squeeeee!” Five seems about right for this huggable puppy of an electric vehicle. Angular in shape, but with soft corners and a front fascia that appears bemused at the world, the Honda e Prototype sadly has that sub-150-mile battery range that dooms it to be a city car for Japan and Europe. Inside, there’s a retro-futuristic touch of an entire IP comprised of screens, while wood inlay adds a touch of mid-century-modern style.
SsangYong Korando
If you let VW design the front, Nissan the back, and Kia the interior, this is what you’d get from this new five-seat midsize crossover. It has a bit of a parts-bin feel, but boasts a roomy second row for your leggy adolescent kids. If it can carry a price-value equation against ostensibly more expensive foes like the Honda Passport, the Korando could make a dent—if it ever gets to America.
Seat el-Born Concept
Could this be the transformation of the crossover? A people hauler that’s not a SUV, CUV, wagon, hatchback, or micro-van, this visionary five-seater could be the shape of things to come. The etched C-pillar graphics, reimagined flying roof, and stubby IP and center console screens are all innovative design transformations. There’s a monstrous central storage cubby and a huge back seat … all thanks to sharing VW’s stellar MEB electric-vehicle architecture meant for Europe’s narrow city streets. Hardly a concept, it should reach Seat dealers in 2020 with 261 miles of range on the WLTP cycle.
Skoda Kamiq
Picture an Audi Q3, but $15,000 cheaper. That’s Skoda for you. It’s the perfect recipe for those who want premium feel on a budget. Granted, its undersized engine offerings would be a bit aired-out on American roads, but we could swap in VW’s 1.4-liter turbo-four and be fine. Interior instruments, gauges, and controls have the look and feel of analog-era Audi—a design that has yet to go out of style. Despite its tidy size, the Kamiq has a generous back seat that fits a six-footer.
Nobe
Still just a prototype, this Estonian-made three-wheeled electric vehicle has the flair of a ‘60s-era Alfa Romeo Giulietta front and boattail Spider rear, while the inside is go-for-a-picnic charming. But it carries the modernity of a lithium-ion battery pack. As a three-wheeler, it will be graded as a motorcycle, not a car (including not having to pass U.S. crash standards, hmm). Nobe is still in startup mode, but if you want to get in on the ground floor, they’re launching a Kickstarter in April. Just remember, three-wheeled transport hasn’t exactly taken off in past iterations—and this one is target-priced at an eye-watering $40,000.

Quick Take: 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE Hatchback
MALIBU, California — “Which Corolla are you driving?” fellow senior editor Nelson Ireson asked.
“The XSE hatch,” I said.
“Oh, the good one,” he replied.
I guess my confusion must have been reflected in my face, because his own expression changed to the exasperated Yet-again-I-must-explain-myself-to-the-humans look that I have come to know so well.
“I didn’t say it was good,” he explained. “I said it was the good one.”
After a couple of days of intensive driving, I will, yet again, beg to differ with Ireson; I think the 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE Hatchback we had in for some evaluation is good, full stop. To be fair, we’re both coming from the same place: No gearhead expects anything from a Corolla sedan beyond a couple hundred years of trouble-free service—it’s really Lunesta on wheels when it comes to excitement. But the Corolla hatch really is in a different category.
Allow me to lay out the evidence, gathered on a fast trip down my favorite curvy roads northwest of Los Angeles. I have driven a Corolla sedan on these very same roads—tried to, at least—and as expected, it proved itself as an under-tired, understeering mess. But the Corolla hatch, which is essentially a rebadged European-market Toyota Auris, shows signs of a pulse, and a rather strong one at that.
My first impression was that this car belongs in the curves. The grip is very good, and when the front end starts to let go—preceded by a reasonable wail of warning from the tires—it does so gently and progressively, with the chassis giving the barest hint that the back end might come into play if one manipulated the controls well (or badly) enough.
No, it’s not perfect; in fact, it’s quite a distance away. The springs are a bit too soft and the dampers not quite effective enough. Hit a big bump mid-corner and the body bounces like a pogo stick, severely enough that the car loses grip on the upswings. Understandable; the Corolla’s first obligation is to avoid grinding vertebrae to dust on the daily commute.
Though the 2.0-liter engine sounds promising at 168 hp, it’s not enough power to motivate the XSE all that briskly. Our colleagues down the hall at Motor Trend timed the manual version to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, with the automatic coming in at 8.5. The bigger problem is that the engine is slow to rev. Our test car had a manual transmission, and it seemed to take forever to climb into the upper rev ranges where it does its best work. The driver has to stay closely tuned in to keep the engine in its powerband, but the tall fuel-economy-minded gearing means that downshifting isn’t always an option on the tightest and slowest of bends. Still, we’ve had similar complaints about other sporty cars, and declared them good.
And there’s plenty more about the Corolla XSE that is more than good. Back home in Europe, the Auris is pitched as an upscale car, and the interior reflects that, with high-quality materials, nicely-finished surfaces, and Lexus-quality switchgear. Though luggage space appears to be in short supply at first glance, the published numbers reveal a trunk area slightly larger than the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Corolla Hatch is also reasonably quiet, at least when it comes to engine and wind noise. Unfortunately, the wheel-and-tire combo (18-inch alloys wrapped with Yokohama Avid GT all-seasons) generate a hollow drone—an issue we’ve encountered in several modern cars with low-profile tires.
Bonus bits on this particular test car included an electronic parking brake and dual-zone automatic climate control. There’s also a rev-matching feature that spins the engine up for easier downshifts, and the cruise control doesn’t disengage when you change gears. (I’m not sure how many modern cars have that feature—it’s not like there are many stick-shift cars left on which to try it out—but the last one I remember with that feature was a BMW.)
The bottom line is that the Corolla XSE is a top notch, all-around hatchback and a bright spot in the Toyota lineup. Is it so bright that we’d spend our own cash on one? Probably not, because the Hyundai Veloster R-Spec delivers more fun for quite a bit less money. Still, this is certainly the best Corolla we’ve driven from an enthusiast’s perspective. A more energetic engine and a stiffer set of shocks and springs could turn this hatch from warm to hot.
Ireson’s right; the XSE hatchback is the good Corolla. But he’s also wrong—if you’re willing to sacrifice best-possible driving dynamics for a comfortable day-to-day ride, the XSE hatch is good, period.

First Drive: 2019 Lexus UX
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — If you’re like me, you’ve probably been wondering what the heck’s been going on at Lexus the past few years, what with the giant spindle grilles, Death Star interiors, stiffened suspensions, and all the other ways you can experience amazing. The 2019 Lexus UX may finally provide us with some answers. Its all-new, entry-level crossover seemingly pulls most of these threads together into one neat bow.
The UX, which replaces the CT as least-expensive vehicle in the Lexus lineup, is aimed at young buyers, meaning young by human demographics (under 35) as opposed to Lexus demographics (under 85. We kid, sort of). While it has similar underpinnings and dimensions to another youth-oriented compact crossover in the Toyota universe, the CH-R, the UX gets additional welding and adhesives to further solidify its structure. Also like the CH-R, the UX 200 will be front-drive only. The UX 250h hybrid, however, is all-wheel-drive-ish. It has an electrically-powered rear axle similar to that of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, but it only works up to 45 mph. That’ll be a bit of a mind-bender for some of us—myself included—so we’ll let those thoughts percolate for a few minutes and talk about styling.
If you can get over the spindle grille as I believe I have, then you’re likely to find the UX an attractive vehicle. Its sheet metal is adorned with just the right number of black-plastic-clad slashes, with more black plastic on the fender arches to give it the SUV-ish feel that its long-and-low hatchback profile wouldn’t otherwise provide. Overall it has the look of a baby Lexus NX, which I’m 98 percent sure is what the designers were going for. Color choices are notably vibrant, including bright blue, arrest-me red, and an intriguing (if slightly unsettling) metallic olive green.
The interior might not appeal to those who subscribe to the wood-and-leather school of luxury, but there are serious improvements over other Lexus models. Instead of buttons for the climate controls, the UX employs piano-style toggles which are easy to identify and use. Audio controls now consist of tiny buttons and dials grouped around a palm rest on the center console. Unconventional? Not necessarily; Mazda and Mercedes put their audio controls on the center armrest as well. Like the air conditioner, I found this system intuitive and easy to use, and I like how it allows for the dash to be de-cluttered. Unfortunately, the UX still uses the Lexus Remote Touch interface, a finger-tip touchpad for the infotainment system that I have grown to loathe (there is no way to use it without staring at the screen, when your eyes should be on the road). Apple CarPlay is standard, but Android users are out of luck. (The explanation? Some 80 percent of Lexus customers use Apple phones.)
While all UXs feature a black dash, there are several bright color choices for the upholstery, all with color-coordinated stitching on the dash and shifter boot. The dash top is textured to resemble washi, a traditional Japanese paper. All in all, this is one of the better cabins in the Lexus lineup.
Enough about how it looks; let’s talk about how it drives. The UX follows the ethos of other recent Lexus models, with a suspension that can find its way around the corners with surprising rapidity but doesn’t seem to enjoy it much. There are plenty of positives: Good grip (helped by the summer tires on our European-spec cars; U.S.-bound models will get all-seasons, but the suspension tuning is the same), good control of body movement, and excellent bump absorption—all with a steady and comfortable ride. F-Sport models have stiffer shocks, a stiffer rear stabilizer bar, and a body-mounted “performance damper,” but I didn’t notice much difference between it and the regular UX. Overall, I found the driving experience to be pleasant, but I can’t say I had a whole lot of fun.
Actually, that’s a fib: I did have a lot of fun, because I was driving through the Swedish countryside blasting ABBA on the Mark Levinson stereo (which, for reasons not quite properly explained, will not be offered on U.S.-spec cars). All I’m saying is that the UX’s handling, competent as it was, was not nearly as strong a contributing factor to my stupid grin on my face as were “Mamma Mia” and “SOS.” To be clear, I can’t fault the UX’s driving dynamics; I just can’t get enthusiastic about them.
The narrow streets of Stockholm drove home the point about the UX being a good city dweller, however. This is a surprisingly tight and tidy car, all the more remarkable because it doesn’t feel at all cramped on the inside. The steering is light and the turning circle is very tight, which came in handy when I made the inevitable wrong turn and wound up exploring a Swedish industrial park. (Much to my disappointment, they look much like industrial parks anywhere else.)
The gasoline-powered UX 200 gets the same powertrain as the Toyota Corolla Hatchback, with a 168-hp 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four and a continuously-variable automatic tranny. The latter features a real-live low gear, an ingenious idea that eliminates the rubber-bandy-feel of a CVT under hard, low-speed acceleration. When speeds rise and loads lighten, the transmission shifts to the CVT’s pulleys. It’ a setup that provides snappy, responsive starts then lets the CVT get on with its fuel-saving job.
The UX 250h deploys an Atkinson-cycle version of the 2.0-liter engine mated to the Toyota (er, Lexus) Hybrid Synergy Drive and an additional electric motor driving the rear wheels. But the AWD system only works at low speeds—power to the rear axle begins to ramp down at about 6 mph and falls to zero by 45 mph.
Acceleration from both powertrains is adequate. Lexus claims 0-60 times of 8.9 seconds for the UX 200 and 8.6 seconds for the UX 250h. Off-the-line response feels fine, but passing a Volkswagen Golf plodding along at 70 (km/h, that is) whitened my knuckles more than I would have liked.
The UX’s biggest fault may be cargo space, or rather the lack thereof. I’d love to say the UX is sized for parking rather than packing, except that I already used that zinger in an article about the Corolla hatchback. Cargo space is identical in both 200 and 200h models—the hybrid’s battery pack is under the back seat—but the trunk floor is extraordinarily high. I expected to find hidden storage space under the floor, but no such luck. The rake of the hatch lid limits how much you can pack in, and big suitcases will require folding the rear seats. No wonder Lexus says the UX is sized for couples—if you have young kids, things would get cramped in a hurry.
Lexus has priced the entry-level UX 200 at $33,025 (including a $1,025 destination fee) with the hybrids going for $2,000 more. The two UX models will be available with Premium, Luxury, and F-Sport packages that up the equipment levels and the price.
