In the third quarter of 2018, Porsche charted revenue of 19.1 billion euros (RM90 billion) and profit of 3.3 billion euros (RM15.5 billion). Look at what the cat brought in – 350,000 units of the Macan were sold up to that time. Not only has the junior SUV fattened up the black ink-penned bottom line, it has done so despite only coming into being only less than six years ago.
The Porsche Macan has played a huge role in bringing the sportscar maker from Stuttgart yet further into profitability – an important evolutionary step if the company is to continue making the sports cars it has historically been known for, alongside the development towards electrification the industry as a whole is headed.
And evolve the Macan Porsche has done, though if judged by what its exterior looks like, the German firm can’t be faulted for lacking subtlety in the revisions made to its bestseller. Has Porsche done enough? Let’s find out.
Famed for its sports cars, the marque has perhaps wisely chosen to stay close to the overall visual cues of the 2014 original, providing enough of a refresh to keep its most compact model in line with the style of its rangemates.
To see where the changes have been made, we must first go back. Literally, to the rump of the Macan, which is where the revised tail lamp assembly now cuts a singular red light strip across the car’s width, giving the SUV its most obvious visual distinction. It’s much the same as before when viewed in profile, while there are select updates again at the sharp end with a revised front bumper and new LED headlamps.
Revisions to the interior are sparing. The dashboard has been updated to accommodate a new, larger infotainment panel, which now measures 10.9 inches across, up from the 7.2-inch unit of the previous iteration, with the central air-conditioning vents relocated to suit the new screen’s added width. Infotainment has been updated to keep with the times, where Porsche Connect enables mobile device pairing with Android and Apple systems.
The proliferation of buttons along the transmission tunnel remains, instead of the visually slicker haptic feedback configuration found on the larger Cayenne and Panamera. To these hands, however, the more traditional setup of conventional buttons offer a more tactile experience, and a greater sense of positivity upon each command of any given knob or button. Perhaps yours truly is just more old-fashioned that way…
Driver instrumentation has also been lightly revised, where the analogue speedometer and tachometer are now joined by a configurable TFT display to the right. The now-familiar 918 Spyder2-style sports steering wheel takes pride of place in the front row, and makes for a pleasingly intuitive driving environment together with the supportive front seats. If Sport Chrono is specified, the Sport Response dial is located at the approximate 4 o’clock position just off the wheel boss.
The Macan’s body-in-white remains as before and thus carries over the cabin, which similarly offers interior space that is either snug or sufficient, depending on one’s persuasion. For the driver, his or her immediate surroundings continues to be good news as with the pre-facelift car, where the positioning of the seat, pedals and steering wheel relative to each other is spot on. No untoward quirks, for the five-foot-ten frame of yours truly, at least.
Two variants were on offer for our sampling – the base Macan with a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine, and the 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 petrol-engined Macan S.
First up was the more potent of the duo, the Macan S with 354 hp and 480 Nm of torque at our disposal. The gains of 14 hp and 20 Nm over the previous boosted six-pot is the result of not merely a calibration exercise, rather a new unit which relocates its twin-scroll turbocharger to the centre of the ‘V’ within both banks of cylinders in order to achieve improved responsiveness.
On the urban and rural roads around Mallorca, the revised turbo six offered all the thrust and immediacy one could feel they need from a compact SUV, even one with a name so overtly associated with motorsport. Certainly, variants more potent than this Macan S will surface in due course, for those who so desire.
When the going got narrower, the smaller exterior dimensions (relative to the Cayenne) worked to the Macan’s benefit, enabling its driver to thread the 1.92 metre-wide (2.09 metres, including mirrors) SUV through the Spanish countryside at pace with greater confidence.
That confidence is further bolstered by the consistency of the control weights on the Macan S, where steering, brakes and throttle are concerned. Porsche says plenty of attention has been paid to braking, where a lighter brake pedal now acts upon the master cylinder via a shortened lever arm.

This is difficult to ascertain without back-to-back comparison against the pre-facelift car, although in isolation the optional PCCB ceramic brakes on the Macan S are tirelessly brilliant, offering a comfortable surfeit of braking power with plenty of pedal feel that enables fine modulation.
Steering is well-judged for weight and directness, in turn imparting responses that feel very much at home in a vehicle of this size and weight. Where the driver steers, the Macan S points with eagerness and hangs on with tenacity which belies its height, and responds rather more akin to a hatchback of traditional stature.
The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) active damping setup is well calibrated across the selection offered, neither sacrificing too much body control for plushness in its softest, nor trading too much absorbency for roll resistance in its firmest. The Macan just deals with the road surface and driver demands of the moment, and delivers composure.
Could the Macan S improve further upon its chassis? Perhaps, though this is likely down to a buyer’s selection of the right options, where ride quality is concerned. Even considering that bump absorption on the Macan S is very agreeable, it could possibly do even better when shod with a wheel-and-tyre combo smaller than the 21-inch diameter set fitted to our test unit.
Our next drive session saw time with the base Macan, which is endowed with the 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 245 hp and 370 Nm of torque. These outputs are down from the preceding version’s 252 hp, owing to measures taken towards compliance with the new, stricter WLTP emission regulations.
In light of the larger Volkswagen Group’s move away from diesel and towards electrification, this petrol four-pot will perhaps be the one to receive Macan Diesel emigrants, or for those looking for the most accessible point of entry into four-door Porsche ownership.
Make no mistake with its entry-level positioning, however, as the base Macan is no poor relation, even in comparison to its more prodigious family members. The fit and finish of the four-cylinder Macan’s cabin feels and appears identical in quality – which is to say, very well put together – to that of the six-cylinder Macan S, with most, if not all trimmings in the larger-engined version available for specification in the base car.

It can’t be helped that in this case, the base Macan lacks in raw muscle from being two cylinders and one litre short in the engine stakes, though the trade-off comes in being 70 kg lighter than the Macan S, with a rated unladen weight of 1,795 kg compared to 1,865 kg for the latter.
As we found, the base car’s three-figure deficit in peak power is made up for when threading through twistier roads – the more modestly propelled version allows for smoother transitions between braking, steering and accelerating (something also noted with the pre-facelift back in 2015). This is largely due to not having as much accumulated speed to scrub off before negotiating a given turn, rather than any dynamic shortcoming on the part of the Macan S. Both models tested wore identically-sized footwear, measuring 265/40R21 and 295/35R21 front and rear, respectively.
The base model’s cast-iron disc brakes measuring 345 mm and 330 mm front and rear respectively are no less reassuring than the optional ceramics on the Macan S. In fact, their slightly softer initial bite allows for even smoother modulation of the brakes, which should be more enjoyable for the vast majority who don’t regularly commit to a touge run en route to wor or on the way home.
As such, it could be argued that the base, 2.0 litre four-pot Macan is the more fluent exponent of tackling a twisty road at modest speeds, on top of potential benefits in terms of running costs. Having said that, anyone buying into this segment of the SUV market is doing so for a price, and will also place a premium on the nuances which add to the driver’s enjoyment – things filed under ‘indulgence’, which may as well include added straight-line pace.
Additionally, while the new V6 mill isn’t the most operatic-sounding unit around, it is nonetheless a richer tonal offering than the four-pot in the base Macan, though the latter still does a highly competent job of sufficiently exercising the chassis for a good time at the helm.
To answer the earlier posed question: has Porsche done enough with this update of the Macan? On account of our time spent with this duo, we’d say so. There are certainly more commodious offerings both within the SUV segment as well as beyond it for the ballpark price range, but if driver enjoyment on paved roads is at the top of your shopping list for a tall-riding vehicle, the current Macan range – albeit a short one, for the time being – remains the sharpest row of tools on the rack.

The Audi SQ5 Is Sporty, Sumptuous, and Strong
A sport-tuned crossover wearing 21-inch low-profile summer tires has no right to ride as creamily as does Audi’s second-generation high-performance SQ5. But smooth and refined the SQ5 most assuredly is—as I discovered mere minutes after climbing behind its leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel. This is a busy segment of the market, bursting with the likes of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the Porsche Macan, the BMW X3, and the Jaguar F-Pace, to name just a few. Even among such impressive competition, though, the SQ5 has a lot to show for itself.
My Matador Red test car was a 2018 model but the 2019 carries over essentially unchanged aside from a new Premium base trim level that joins the Premium Plus and Prestige models. (Specs and pricing will be for 2019 models.) My example was a sumptuously appointed Prestige, which commands a $9,700 over the Premium. For that sum you get a color head-up display, a Bang & Olufsen surround-sound audio system, Audi MMI navigation, Audi’s virtual cockpit, and much more. Among the other options on board: $500 carbon-fiber interior trim, the $595 paint, the $3,000 S Sport package (adaptive air suspension, red calipers, torque-vectoring rear differential), Nappa leather upholstery for $1,000, Dynamic Steering for $1,150, and 21-inch wheels with 255/40 summer rubber for another grand. My car also had an $1,800 Driver Assistance package that brought a bunch of active safety goodies, most of which were made standard on 2019 Premium Plus and/or Prestige models. The final tally to get a 2019 like mine? $70,340, not an insignificant amount for something this size.
But climb aboard and the SQ5 welcomes you into a stylish atmosphere full of pleasing shapes and rich materials, including fine, diamond-stitched quilted leather and crisp brushed-aluminum trim. The general feeling of quality is all but unsurpassed. This is a delicious—that’s the word—environment in which to hit the road. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features of the comprehensive infotainment system, but the real star is the Virtual Cockpit, which beams a full-color, photo-realistic Google Earth map display onto a large screen directly behind the wheel. It looks great and works beautifully, also allowing you to configure the main gauges (speedo, tach) as you like them. A large rotary knob and an accompanying touchpad on the central console make navigating the MMI multimedia interface totally painless. Audi has smartly avoided doing away with buttons and switches altogether, using a simple dials-and-tabs interface for controlling the climate-control system, plus additional buttons for operating various systems intuitively. Even seemingly unimportant details—such as, say, how smoothly the central display screen rolls through SiriusXM radio stations—combine to enhance the driving experience. The is one well-thought-out cockpit.
Space-wise, the gen-two SQ5 is roomier than its predecessor, but you wouldn’t call it “big” inside. Rear-seat leg- and shoulder room step up a notch, but you’ll trade some spaciousness to enjoy the Audi’s tidy exterior dimensions. The cargo area behind the second row is adequate for groceries or bags for a getaway, but there are roomier options in this class. I’d say most performance-minded shoppers considering the SQ5 will be fine with its interior volume and its prioritization of sportiness over size.
That Sport adaptive air suspension is a recommended option, as it drops the ride height by 1.2 inches compared with the standard suspension, lowering the center of gravity and improving agility. Its modes are chosen using the Drive Select switch on the dash and include Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, Individual—allowing a personalized setup of ride height and damper stiffness—and Offroad, the last of which raises the suspension for increased ground clearance. I ran the SQ5 mostly in Dynamic, and even then the ride never got testy, at least on L.A.’s generally smooth roads. The rig has enough grip to be entertaining to hustle along when the mood strikes, the optional variable-ratio steering system becoming increasingly direct at low speeds to improve maneuvering and, on the highway, changing response to enhance stability. Overall, steering response is first-rate.
Not to be forgotten is the sublime powertrain. The turbocharged and direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 is a stout little thing, good for 354 horsepower and serving up all 369 lb-ft of torque at just 1,370 rpm. Fed through the standard ZF eight-speed automatic and Quattro all-wheel drive, the turbo engine can launch the SQ5 to 60 mph in just over five seconds. There are faster rides in rival showrooms, but the Audi feels plenty brawny. The sport rear differential that comes with the S Sport package can, if needed, divert almost all torque to one rear wheel. The entire system—engine, transmission, Quattro, diff—works with conspicuous refinement. That is, it never seems to work hard, yet you find yourself zipping right along and feeling totally secure the entire time.
The SQ5 may not biggest or the fastest or the flashiest machine in its sporty-crossover field, but there’s nothing it doesn’t do well, it’s brimming with helpful safety tech, and it exudes poise and competence in any driving situation. Add the clean-lined exterior and the gorgeous cockpit, and you have a spirited package that deserves a spot on any list of one shopping the segment. I’d raise my hand for seat time in an SQ5 any day.

Speaking of electricity, mild panic made the rounds of Team I-Pace when the task of finding a sufficiently powerful charging dock for the brand-new all-electric Jaguar proved more difficult than expected. Thankfully there were a couple of low-power wall boxes at the hotel. By the time Wolfgang Ziebart (the driving force behind the I-Pace’s development and my co-pilot for our cross-U.K. adventure) and I set off the next morning, the state-of-charge display read 93 percent, and the range meter indicated we had more than enough juice to make the nominal 147 miles to our destination. In an effort to maximize driving pleasure and minimize consumption, the chosen route was practically devoid of highway stretches. The chase car carried a couple of spare wheels and a tow bar but no mobile charger.

An early eye-opener was a multimile duel we had with a black Mercedes-AMG C 63. Ziebart also lauded the I-Pace’s instant torque punch, its electric all-wheel drive that introduces a new dimension of axle-by-axle torque vectoring, and the air suspension, which helps neutralize the weight penalty. “The I-Pace combines the best of both worlds,” he said. “It protects our planet, and it puts a big smile on the driver’s face.”
Those smiles start with the car’s 90-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which feeds power to two electric motors, mounted in the center of the front and rear axles, that produce a total of 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of twist routed through a single-speed transmission. It hits 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and calls it quits at 124 mph, according to Jaguar.
It does it all with a hush, too. Just as the environment needs to get used to the silently approaching electric car, the driver needs time to learn and adjust as well. Take for instance the “single-pedal” driving style many cite as one of the breed’s dynamic highlights. You decelerate by lifting off of the throttle, using the high amount of drag-producing brake regeneration for the best balance of charging the batteries and pacing yourself. Ziebart loves the one-pedal feel, which probably explains why the toggle for alternating between low- and high-regeneration modes is hidden in the undergrowth of the I-Pace’s system settings. Although high works well in many situations, it forces you to keep the accelerator depressed at a certain minimum angle or the vehicle will swiftly purr to a stop. In terms of overall energy balance, low is therefore marginally more efficient than high.
“Forget range and state of charge,” commanded Herr Ziebart. “Just go for it. Drive it like an F-Type.”
Whenever we stopped for photos, food, or a brief pow-wow, the Jaguar was about as conspicuous to onlookers as the area’s grazing sheep. No one really took notice of this early exercise in zero-emissions mobility. That’s probably because the I-Pace looks first and foremost like a modern Jaguar, sporting a large trademark grille, a stubby squared-off front end, substantial 20-inch wheels (22-inchers are available, 18-inchers come standard) hugging the seldom-applied brakes, and a spacious body shaped for street cred and aerodynamic efficiency.
The I-Pace’s basic operation is as easy as most any other car. Hitting the starter button summons the instruments, lights, and infotainment. There are four self-explanatory keys labeled D, N, R, and P. The dished steering wheel is laden with various fumblements, the driving position is of the command-view type, and the 18-way seats are comfortable and supportive. However, legroom for taller drivers is compromised by the elbowing center console, and visibility is masked some by the rakish greenhouse and prominent C-pillars. That said, thanks in part to the lack of a conventional powertrain, interior space in the well-executed, cab-forward cabin is ample, with multiple significant storage areas and plenty of room for four adults, five in a pinch. A full-length glass panoramic roof further opens up the space. Three digital screens—the 12.3-inch instrument panel, 10.0-inch main touchscreen, and 5.5-inch supplemental touchscreen below it in the center stack—offer loads of information and are generally easy to use.
Heading north past Lancaster, we skirt the Forest of Bowland before heading inland for the Yorkshire Dales along a route usually haunted by members of the Anti-Destination League. But today you could easily mistake the 40-mile section between Ingleton and Bedale for a particularly picturesque stage of Rallye England. “Forget range and state of charge,” commanded Herr Ziebart. “Just go for it. Drive it like an F-Type.” Order taken, mission accomplished.
Pace setter: The I-Pace didn’t attract much attention in England as it has a Jaguar family resemblance, but the scooped hood hints at its alternative powertrain.
At just south of 1,400 pounds, the battery pack adds more than enough weight to flatten the ride, lower the center of gravity, and balance the axle loads. Even low-speed suspension comfort is acceptable; neither potholes nor crumbling soft shoulders will upset the car’s balance and poise. Long undulations and transverse irritations are rarely an issue, and tire roar is about level with wind noise. The I-Pace does a fine job building confidence through communication, composure, and coolness at speed.
Although Eco, Snow/Gravel, and Comfort modes have their place, Dynamic is where the I-Pace is at its paciest: Throttle tip-in strikes like lightning, and tip-out squashes speed as if an electronic gremlin had pulled the parking brake. Throttle action is downright aggressive, and although the steering may be a touch too heavy, the suspension stamps its go-faster signature onto every apex it can clip. Sound like a hardcore sports car? It should. We had it airborne over brows, occasionally lifted the inner front wheel when cornering Formula E style, and took no prisoners circling three-lane roundabouts on the racing line. Ziebart grinned but said nothing. He looked happy that I too now knew what he knew all along.

About two-thirds of the way across the British Isle, the range monitor suddenly suggested we should recharge ASAP, ideally at a shopping mall down the road, sparking some EV anxiety. Two minutes later, however, the computer caught up with the navigation system and indicated we were good to go for the remainder of the journey to Scarborough. “Everyone is at the beginning of a learning curve, which may be steeper than we think,” Ziebart said. “That’s why generous comfort and safety margins are so important.”
We arrived in Scarborough with plenty of range left, just in time for tea and scones. I was sorry to see the I-Pace go because it is a harbinger of a bright and promising future, and it is, most important, fun to drive. Make that a lot of fun. Max torque on demand is a killer asset, vehicle dynamics are already a match for the SVR mindset, and more space in combination with a smaller footprint scores 10 out of 10 on the practicality scale.
Not too long ago, Jaguar would have been proud to be an early adopter of technologies invented elsewhere. In the summer of 2018, however, things are different: The I-Pace is a surprise leader of the battery-powered pack.
