First Drive: 2019 Nissan Altima
SANTA BARBARA, California – There are a handful of midsize sedans out there whose names have become ubiquitous in the modern era, with the Altima being one of them. In its quarter century on the market, the made in America Altima has grown into a huge sales success for Nissan and a credible foil for the likes of the middleweight title holders Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
But while it’s all well and good to have name recognition, that’s certainly no guarantee of success in today’s bread-and-butter sedan segment—one that has been getting crushed in favor of crossovers. The Ford Fusion is essentially on life support, and the likes of the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6, and Volkswagen Passat have all seen their share of the sales pie shrink. If you want your sedan to survive in today’s landscape, you better bring it when you bring out a new model like the sixth-generation, 2019 Nissan Altima.
Though Nissan is outwardly bullish on the Altima’s future, it’s clear that it wanted—in some ways needed—to make a bold, aggressive exterior design statement to draw notice to a car that in recent years had become relatively anonymous. While it cribs elements from recent Nissan efforts, most notably the Maxima, you’re not going to miss its new V face. You can argue with some of the details like its horse-collar of a grille (Edsel, anyone?), but it’s a cohesive design overall that’s as attractive and distinctive, possibly more so, than the new Accord or Camry—depending on your aesthetic viewpoint, of course.
On the inside, as you’d expect, the 2019 Altima is far more improved and refined. The most noticeable upgrade is its new prominent center touchscreen, which now measures at 8.0-inches and has large volume and tuning knobs. (Take it from Honda, you have to have those knobs.) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the system can cope with the speed both software systems need to operate. The fruits of Nissan’s Amazon Alexa partnership can also be experienced in the Altima. None of the materials inside felt terribly cheap, although there was still a quality disparity between the scratchy fabric and the plusher leather upholstery on the 8-way power driver’s seat. At least they were both comfortable. In highly-equipped trim levels with attractive materials and color combinations, the Altima is a nice place to be. All passengers are also likely to appreciate the four USB charging points scattered around the car.
Under the hood of the new 2019 Altima you’ll find two engine options. Nissan’s 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four remains the base engine. It’s essentially a carryover design, but Nissan says it has more than 80 percent new parts and uses direct injection among other refinements to deliver 188 horsepower, nine more horses than before. Every 2.5-liter model of the new Altima is now available with an optional all-wheel drive system with a 50:50 torque split in most situations, a first for a Nissan sedan and something that remains a relative rarity in this segment short of a Subaru lot. Front-wheel drive 2.5-liter models are rated at 27 mpg city/39 highway—up one in both categories. Adding all-wheel drive knocks those numbers down by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.
The big powertrain news for the 2019 Altima though is the addition of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Normally, that wouldn’t be much of a blockbuster as seemingly every car and crossover under the sun these days has a boosted four of the same displacement. But this isn’t just any old 2.0-liter turbo four; this is Nissan’s all-new VC-Turbo engine, which recently made its debut in the Infiniti QX50 crossover. While it’s down on power from the 3.5-liter V-6 it replaces, it offers more torque and the unit itself is lighter—putting less weight at the front of the car. Nissan has engineered the engine to be able to adjust compression ratios from 8:1 to 14:1, depending on whether the greatest performance or the greatest efficiency is needed. It also bests the old V-6’s EPA figures by as much as 3 mpg. One bummer though, the VC-Turbo isn’t available with all-wheel drive.
Underpinning the 2019 Altima is the same Renault-Nissan D platform as the outgoing model. The company’s engineers say it’s been extensively redesigned to make it more rigid and refined, to accommodate the all-wheel drive system, and to improve efficiency.
Despite all the boasting and the improvements and the promise of excitement, when it comes down to it we found the 2019 Altima drives a lot like the old model. Yes, there is a bit more refinement, and it’s certainly not offensive in any way, but no new ground is broken. Models equipped with the 2.5-liter and the CVT drive like, well, Nissans with CVTs and 2.5-liter engines. Power is relatively smooth and Nissan continues to refine its CVT, but you have to wonder how good the Altima might be if it were offered with a six-speed automatic that you still get in a Camry, or a small-displacement turbo and six-speeder as the Passat has. It’s worth noting both of those cars post similar fuel economy figures.
Most of our time however was spent in a top tier Altima Platinum with the new VC-Turbo making the power. While the old V-6 could be a fun engine when pushed, one could never really call it hushed or refined. That’s where the VC-Turbo shines. While the CVT can make the base engine dull to rev in certain situations, it seems to keep the turbo constantly awake, eliminating pretty much any perceptible lag. The VC-Turbo can also be had in the SR trim, which gets changes to the steering and ride in pursuit of that ever elusive “sportiness.” We drove an SR with the 2.5-liter front-drive setup and none of our sporting senses were turned on by the car. While the wheel sizes jump from the base 16-inchers to 19s on the SR models, grip seemed to be about the same as the softer setup. Our takeaway? While you can have a bit of fun in the VC-Turbo-equipped car, the Altima is tuned more for comfort and refinement than anything else, no matter how you option it.
It’s also tuned to be a safe car. The 2019 Altima is the latest Nissan to get the marque’s Pro Pilot Assist assistance technology that can keep the car centered on freeway lanes. With available adaptive cruise control and blind spot and lane keep assists, Nissan’s self-driving assist system was up there with similar technologies from luxury automakers when I tried it on the current Leaf and Rogue models. This may be another draw for customers comparing cars in this class. Features such as automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring are standard on all but the base Altimas, too.
As for pricing, the base S model starts at $24,645 including destination, with the top-level Platinum with the VC-Turbo going for $35,675. All-wheel-drive is a $1,350 option on all models with the 2.5-liter. These numbers fall pretty much in the middle of the mainstream sedan market.
And that’s where the Altima continues to land: in the middle. Despite the styling and promises of an exciting time behind the wheel, it remains a pragmatic automotive appliance more than anything else with good fuel economy, plenty of space, impressive tech options, and lots of standard equipment. Given that the Altima is now in the middle of an ever smaller pack, there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t continue to find buyers who value comfort and convenience over performance and handling. Honestly, that’s the majority of people in this segment, anyway.
At the Altima’s launch, the product representatives threw out the cringe worthy line, “not your parent’s car,” when describing their new baby. It has a little more truth to it now than it maybe did before—because your parents are more than likely driving a crossover. But we’re betting they at least know the Altima by name

2019 Nissan Altima Starts At $23,750, Turbo Goes For $29,150
All-wheel drive is available for the first time, and buyers can add lots of safety assists, too.
After reading Motor1.com‘s recently published First Drive of the new 2019 Nissan Altima, you might be tempted to check one out at your local dealer soon. Now, Nissan is revealing just how much you should expect to pay for the new sedan. Prices now start at $23,750 for the front-wheel-drive S trim, versus a base cost of $23,260 for the 2018 model. The Altima is available with all-wheel drive for the first time, and this system takes the entry-level grade to $25,100.
Even base trims of the Altima now come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth support for its 8-inch infotainment system. The driver gets an eight-way power adjustable seat. Plus, there’s a big boost in active safety with standard automatic emergency braking, intelligent forward collision warning, and rear door alert.
The new Altima is here:
Buyers can also add an optional Nissan Safety Shield 360 system that includes pedestrian detection for the automatic emergency braking system, rear automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, and high beam assist. For even more high-tech help, the range-topping Premium trim comes standard with the Intelligent Around View Monitor.
Nissan updates its 2.5-liter four-cylinder to produce 188 horsepower (140 kilowatts) and 180 pound-feet (244 Newton-meters), instead of 179 hp (134 kW) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) from the version in the previous generation. For a starting price of $29,150 on the SR trim, customers can get the company’s new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with variable compression that makes 248 hp (185 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm), and this powerplant is only available on front-wheel-drive Altimas.
If a buyer wants all the bells and whistles, the Edition One is available at launch. It takes the range-topping Platinum trim and adds 19-inch wheels, a trunk lip spoiler, and illuminated door sill plates. Buyers also get three years of access to the Nissan Concierge service.

About the 2019 Nissan Altima The 2019 Altima’s expressive design is lower, longer and wider than the previous generation with a highly balanced, aggressive stance that includes available 19-inch wheels and tires. Inside, the all-new premium interior features a wide “gliding wing” instrument panel – which accentuates the exterior’s low cowl and hood, helping create an open, airy environment. It is available in a range of nine dynamic exterior colors.
Key interior comfort and convenience features range from standard 8-way power driver’s seat with added bolstering for improved holding and support, to a selection of audio and infotainment choices, including a Bose® Premium Audio system with nine speakers, and a new digital amplifier with eight channels of custom equalization.
In addition to standard Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, every 2019 Altima comes equipped with standard Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®, Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant, and Siri® Eyes Free voice recognition. Available NissanConnect® Services powered by SiriusXM® provides compatible smartphone and smartwatch access to features such as Remote Engine Start/Stop3, Remote Door Lock/Unlock, Valet Alert, and more. Additionally, certain remote features are accessible through the NissanConnect Services Amazon Alexa Skill and Google Assistant Action.
Standard on all grade levels is a new 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder direct injection engine, which is rated at 188 horsepower (versus the previous 2.5-liter’s 179 hp) and 180 lb-ft of torque (versus the previous 177 lb-ft). More than just the gains in horsepower and torque, the new engine is more refined, quieter and offers improved fuel economy (based on EPA figures).
Replacing the previous-generation Altima’s 3.5-liter V6 engine is the company’s world’s first production-ready variable compression turbo inline 4-cylinder, called the VC-Turbo. It delivers near V6-level performance with 4-cylinder fuel economy. The VC-Turbo seamlessly changes its compression ratio between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency). The engine delivers 248 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque (premium fuel). The new engine is available on Altima SR and Platinum VC-Turbo front-wheel drive grades.
The 2019 Altima also offers available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive for the first time ever on a Nissan sedan in the U.S. The AWD system is available on all trim levels equipped with the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.
The range of safety and convenience features includes standard Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (I-FCW) and Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA) on all grades. Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM) is standard on the Altima Platinum.

2019 Nissan Altima First Drive: Good Where It Counts
While the Accord battles the Camry for sales supremacy, the Altima now offers something its Toyota and Honda rivals don’t at any price—all-wheel drive. That distinguishing option is far from the only change Nissan made to the new 2019 Altima, which boasts a V-6-replacing turbo-four and an interior that will make last-gen Altima owners jealous. Perpetually the third car in a two-car sales race, the renewed Nissan Altima enters 2019 ready to challenge the midsize sedan segment.
The heart of Nissan’s redesigned midsizer beats more like a Camry than an Accord, as the Altima’s base engine is a 188-hp 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4 and not a small turbocharged powerplant. A CVT provides smooth responses on every Altima, except when the transmission occasionally mimics a conventional multispeed automatic at wide-open throttle. On the 2.5-liter I-4 and with the more powerful variable-compression 2.0-liter engine, a sport mode hides at the base of the gear stalk. Hit it, and the CVT understands you mean business as you pass another car or just want more responsiveness.
Despite the fully loaded car that Nissan will probably splash over its ads, the 2019 Altima poses its biggest threat in lower trims. When a car you want is out of reach financially, an extra $1,000 might as well be $100,000—but that’s not a problem with the Altima 2.5 S. If you can live without LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels—both standard on a base-model Honda Accord—the $24,645 2019 Altima 2.5 S offers a killer set of features.
The Nissan in that form may look like it belongs at an airport rental car lot, but the sub-$25,000 midsize sedan includes a power driver’s seat, a modern 7.0-inch display in the center of the instrument cluster, automatic emergency braking, four USB ports (one type A and type C, front and rear), comfortable front seats, remote engine start with a proximity key, and an 8.0-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You won’t find those smartphone-based connectivity features on base-model 2018 Accords or 2019 Camrys. Also, a power driver’s seat is unavailable on the former, and four USB ports aren’t offered on either at that price point. When a 2019 Altima 2.5 S still lacks too many features for your tastes, check the option box for alloy wheels above the standard 16-inch steel wheels with covers. Or drive an Altima in any other trim; the more expensive models all come with alloy wheels and LED headlights.
As a commuter car with EPA-estimated 28/39 mpg city/highway for most front-drive trims, the 2019 Altima is a decent budget-friendly option with a long highway driving range. Expect much more, however, and that rock-solid value crumbles a bit. Two of the three Altimas we drove had steering that felt imprecise, with a vague on-center feel. The SR model performed slightly better, which makes sense considering that volume trim is designed to not just look sporty, but feel sporty, too, with retuned steering and suspension. At least the ride on 17-inch wheels and 215/55R all-season tires is cushy, though we can’t say the same about a loaded model we drove with 19s and 235/40R all-season tires. The Altima looks great on 19-inch wheels, but the highway ride of Platinum and Edition One cars could be a little more comfortable.
Even if you don’t get a loaded Platinum model, all Altimas benefit from a much-improved interior. The 8.0-inch touchscreen stands tall at the top of the center stack, with volume and tuning knobs as well as two large and helpful knobs below that to adjust temperature. The rear seat is spacious, and the Altima’s new exterior design translates to great sightlines on both sides and acceptable rear visibility over the trunklid. The 2019 Altima offers 15.4 cubic feet of cargo space, a tad more than the 15.1 cubic feet on most Camrys and less than the Accord’s 16.7 cubic feet.
Like the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and Kia Optima, the 2019 Altima will receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Nissan tells us. (The comparison-test-winning Honda Accord fell short of the “+” because its highest headlight rating is Acceptable instead of Good.) Although automatic emergency braking is standard on every Altima—thanks for that, Nissan—a full package of active safety tech becomes standard on the midlevel SV trim. The impressive suite of tech bundles blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking (helpful when you’re reversing from between two enormous SUVs), and ProPilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with a feature that mostly keeps the car centered in its lane. When that’s not active, lane departure warning is on duty, though we’d recommend turning off the overly intrusive steering wheel vibration alert—stick with the audible warnings. One not-to-be-overlooked duo of standard safety features is the four-tire tire-pressure psi readout and Nissan’s Easy Tire Fill Alert. Together, they can reduce the uneasiness some feel about regularly checking a car’s tire pressure.
For those who consider the security of all-wheel-drive traction a safety feature, Nissan joins the Subaru Legacy and Ford Fusion in offering an all-wheel-drive midsize sedan under $30,000. The Ford may be the prettiest of that trio, but its all-wheel-drive option is offered on the pricier 2.0-liter variant that only gets 20 mpg in the city. The Nissan’s all-wheel-drive powertrain is a $1,350 option on every 2.5-liter trim and, aside from making the Altima feel a tad slower, fades into the background in normal driving. When conditions become more severe, the system can send up to 50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels. With all-wheel drive, EPA-rated fuel economy dips from the front-drive’s 27–28/37–39 mpg to 25–26/35–36 mpg (the lower numbers correspond to SR and Platinum trims riding on 19-inch wheels).
For comparison, the four-cylinder 2019 Subaru Legacy is rated at 25/34 mpg, which, incidentally, is also the eye-poppingly good fuel economy on the 2019 Altima’s 2.0 trims. With the new 2.0-liter turbo-four that produces 248 hp and 280 lb-ft on premium fuel, “Altima V-6” is relegated to history and the pre-owned car lot. But even though the Altima 2.0 handily outperforms Camry V-6 and Accord 2.0 in fuel economy, the car isn’t always responsive to wide-open throttle blasts from a stop without the transmission’s sport mode activated. Otherwise, you’ll definitely feel the extra 60 horses compared to the base engine. The VC-Turbo costs $4,050 above the front-drive 2.5 SR and carries a $4,000 premium on the Platinum trim above the 2.5-liter version; the 2.0 SR’s price is just over $1,000 cheaper than a 2018 Accord 2.0T Sport.
Spending $35,675 on a midsize sedan will sound absurd to some buyers, but loaded Altimas look good inside. A Platinum-level 2019 Altima with the VC-Turbo engine adds a surround-view camera system, accent lighting, and a driver memory seat. Unless you really need those features, the more powerful engine, or 19-inch wheels, try the less expensive but still well-equipped $30,735 2.5 SL with leather seats and Nissan’s attractive faux wood trim. Until Nissan adds a head-up display or ventilated front seats to the Platinum model, other midsize sedans make more sense at the very top end of the segment.
But as long as the 2019 Altima’s steering doesn’t bother you, the Nissan fights for your money most effectively on its lower trims. The spacious Nissan is efficient and comfortable if you avoid the 19-inch wheels. Plus, the new all-wheel-drive option and updated interior elevate the Altima’s competitiveness in a class that also includes the fun-to-drive Mazda6 and value-oriented Hyundai Sonata. If your commuter-car search starts and ends with the segment’s Big Three, however, a smartly equipped 2019 Nissan Altima is worth a look once it goes on sale this fall.

To manufacture the all-new Altima, Nissan’s U.S. assembly plants required some upgrades, and the automaker has made the changes happen with an investment $170 million. As a result, the Nissan’s Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tenn., began production of the 2019 Altima today. Since June 1992, nearly 4.6 million Altimas have been manufactured in the Smyrna plant. Nissan’s plant in Canton, Miss., also benefited from the automaker’s sizable investment. With Nissan’s $170 million investment, both plants are equipped with cutting-edge manufacturing technology including calibration equipment designed for Nissan’s innovative ProPILOT Assist technology, which will be featured in the new Altima. Paint shops have been upgraded and a laser brazing system has been added to the plants’ body shops as well. “Nissan’s continued investment in our manufacturing facilities underpins our commitment to building top-quality vehicles in the U.S., as well as our valued workforce and the communities where we do business,” said Heath Holtz, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, Nissan North America, Inc. The 2019 Nissan Altima will be available at five trim levels — S, SR, SV, SL, and Platinum. The Altima Edition ONE will be a limited-production model. In addition to standard ProPILOT Assist on the SV, SL and Platinum trims, the 2019 Altima will feature the driver assist technology of Rear Automatic Braking. The new Altima features a standard 2.5-liter engine and an available 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine. “This new Altima builds on 25 years and more than 5.6 million Altima sales to date — but to us, this is just a starting point,” said Denis Le Vot, senior vice president, chairman of management committee, Nissan North America, Inc. “That’s why we decided to shake up the midsize segment in terms of design, driving enjoyment and technologies that are advanced and affordable.” Share this video: https://youtu.be/kkS_zYewSZw If you enjoy our content, don't forget to support us and subscribe :) SUBSCRIBE HERE https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm2go1-R8BEb9c4fvWhUCSw?sub_confirmation=1 ⚠ Don’t miss next videos: Press the little bell 🔔 to get notifications.Thank you for your visit.
