Legends of Tomorrow - ‘Terms of Service’ Review
Tumblr media
"The power is in the Palm(er) of your hands."
Is it rude to point out that the Emperor has no clothes, if you point out at the same time that the Emperor is super ripped and has been clearly doing a lot of cardio?
Because.... Damn, Emperor. You got it going on.
Which is, of course, my frivolous and subtextually homoerotic way of saying that there's an embarrassment of riches in this episode when it comes to things to like, but they all kind of rely on some serious glossing over of problem spots.
The problem in a nutshell can be boiled down to one thing. The basic opening foundation for this episode doesn't match at all with where things were left at the end of the previous one. I'm tempted to assume that I'd missed an entire episode worth of plot development, except that I know perfectly well that I didn't. It's almost as if the writers room broke a 17 episode series of stories and then just completely excised one of them when they found out they were only getting 16 to air.
For the love of God, CW, please start giving Legends a full boat of 22 episodes. It's getting embarrassing.
OK, so here's what I mean. A not insignificant portion of the plot development tonight entirely relies on the fairy godmother currently being under Gary's control. That's actually an inspired plot development, and his relationship both with Tabitha and with the next inheritor of the fairy godmother mantle were pure gold as far as both comedy and plot development goes.
The problem is, when exactly did Fairy Godmother bond herself to Gary? He calls to her at the end of the previous episode and she saves him from Mona as if their relationship was an established thing, but unless I missed something significant completely, that was not a thing they'd ever set up.
I'll be fair. I drink a lot of wine. If I missed something that explains this, please do let me know in the comments.
Additionally, at the end of 'Nip/Stuck,' Mona ate off Gary's evil nipple – not a sentence you get to type every day – and Gary was rushed out of the Time Bureau with unconscious Mona, Tabitha, and Neron in Ray's body. The implication strongly was that Gary's nipple was behind the mass hypnosis of the Bureau, and now that it had been destroyed the bureau was saved. Left behind to witness the bad guys escape was Nora, Ava, and Sara.
This week we open with the bad guys still in possession of the Bureau, only now it's due to Gary's influence over the fairy godmother rather than his fancy hypnotic nipple. Not only do we see no evidence of the bad guys leaving the bureau together, they aren't even all in a group anymore. Mona is imprisoned in the Bureau cells, which makes no sense if they were fleeing with her body ten minutes earlier. Neron and Tabitha aren't even there anymore as they're busy setting up 'PalmerX 2019,' a low key tech con with only one panel and one guest. Ava and Sara are back on the Waverider as if they'd never liberated the Bureau in the first place, and Nora is Die Harding her way to rescue Mona with no mention of how she got separated from them.
I'm sorry, show, but I have to ask. Did you smoke a gigantic bag of crack between these two episodes, or what?
It's all very frustrating, because I said earlier, where they take all of those plot threads is fantastic. Neron's plan to create fear using the monsters so that people will download an app in order to locate the monsters and in doing so sell their immortal souls through a lengthy terms of service agreement is both goat-shit crazy and completely brilliant. What's more, it would absolutely work. If you doubt it, just consider how much none of us noticed when the guests of PalmerX were shown agreeing to a terms of service agreement that they didn't read. Seriously, go back and look. The camera shots practically luxuriate on people swiping through the TOS as fast as they can, but nothing about that reads as unusual or sinister to us anymore and so we just blanked it out.
Similarly, Tabitha's plan to trick Nora into taking on her fairy godmother mantle was inspired, despite being lifted pretty completely from genie-lore, particularly Disney's Live Action Aladdin Soon in Theaters Near You. And God bless the show for keeping Jane Carr around as Tabitha. I absolutely expected that they'd find an excuse to recast Tabitha into the body of someone younger and sexier as soon as they possibly could, because that's the kind of gross thing that network execs tend to insist on. I love, love, love that they're keeping her around as Neron's love interest. And while we're talking about it, it's such a good choice for them to show that Neron and Tabitha do genuinely love each other. It would have been so easy to tumble into the cliché of a villain team eager to backstab one another.
But the best choice this episode made was in the nature of Gary Green himself. Wonderful reveal that Gary was perfectly aware the entire time that the fairy godmother was trying to get him to wish hurt on the Legends and so he was deliberately just focusing on wishing to hang out with them as a way of defying her. Even when 'Dark Gary' finally gets called forth, his glorious flow of vengeance never goes further than acne and tap dancing. Gary is a good man, fundamentally. And he's absolutely right, he does not deserve to be laughed at. I've been saying since the beginning of the season that the Legends need to face a consequence for the way they're played Gary as convenient bait that can be had for a little flattery. I think they finally learned that lesson here.
Which brings lastly to John Constantine, in a plotline I like to call, 'This should absolutely have been an entire episode all on its own.'
When they mentioned Hell's Triumvirate I briefly entertained the thought that they might be about to do the good parts of 'Dangerous Habits' that everybody always leaves out when they try to adapt it, but alas, no. It felt right that he chose Astra over Ray, as much as it broke my heart, and it felt equally right that Astra betrayed him. Can't wait to see what will happen there when Nora gets to Hell to rescue John. I do, however, which that they'd gone with the imagery from the comics and had Astra only have one arm.
Everybody remember where we parked:
There was actually shockingly little travel this week. The Waverider just hung around Washington D.C. in 2019, and a couple of our heroes went to Hell, which may or may not equate to the same time zone, it's hard to tell.
What is interesting is the reveal that Zari grew up a little outside of D.C. Did we know that already, or was that a reveal of convenience this week? Zari appeared to me to be in the 8-10 range, although I am a notoriously bad judge of age so she might be a bit older. That actually answers a couple of longstanding questions I was pondering last year about what baby Zari might be up to in our time period.
Zari mentions that it's only a few years away from when ARGUS takes over everything and creates an anti-Meta, anti-Muslim Dystopia. We're all kind of assuming they're just never going to deal with that, aren't we?
Quotes:
Sara: "Mick, Nate, do you think you can handle Tabitha?" Mick: "Granny’s dead."
Sara: "OK, can you guys stop being dragon baby crazy right now?"
Gary: "And now I have three nipples, because a spare never hurts." Having a third nipple was historically a sign of witchcraft. There is a zero percent chance the writers don't know that.
Calibraxis: "You’re dead, demon hunter!" Constantine: "I was gonna be a demon proctologist, but the pay wasn’t as good."
Calibraxis: "I’m a demon, not a pirate, John."
Zari: "It’s a demon app. I’m gonna read the fine print."
Charlie: "If I die, I’m gonna come back and haunt you." Zari: "I would love a ghost friend."
Nora: "Gary, you dick!"
Bits and Pieces:
-- This season has for some reason brought up a lot of embarrassing confessions from me. Adding to the list that already contains my love of semiotics and the assembly of flatpack furniture, this week I have to tell you how much I love logo design. Honestly. I bring this up because the PalmerX logo is a masterwork. The solid 3-D cube implied by the background framing device conveys an unspoken implication of solidity and dependability with the third implied square breaking the frame and shooting 'toward' the viewer implying a daring willingness to work outside conventional rules and by implication 'think outside the box.' The coloring, meanwhile, subtly underscores the 'Palmer' portion of the name, thus reinforcing the higher brand. Honestly, and with no ironic joking involved, the PalmerX logo is a f*cking masterpiece of work.
-- I actually have a startling number of opinions on the quality of logo design. Feel free to ask, but I warn you that the answers get lengthy.
-- I get that they were underscoring the connection between Tala Ashe and Zari's younger self, but that hairstyle just fundamentally did not work for her. That's actually kind of rare and notable for her. Just about every hairstyle they've ever given her has looked gorgeous.
-- Looks like Wixtable the dragon is hatching in time for the season finale.
-- I went back and forth on whether or not it was smart or stupid for Zari to have brought the egg with her on the mission. Ultimately, I think there was no guaranteed safe place for the egg, given how often messed up stuff happens on the Waverider when they aren't there.
-- I hope Nate is understanding about Zari leaving the egg behind.
-- So many questions about why Nate has a 'Kid Steel' costume hanging around. And why Gary picked it.
-- This week's fabulous dress watch. Jane Carr looked stunning in that evil black number she adopted once she'd ditched her godmother duties. Also, the designer of that asymmetrical sheath number that Nora wore to PalmerX is underpaid. Regardless of how much he or she is paid, they are underpaid. That dress was amazing. Please, please, Courtney Ford, tell me that you stole that dress and have it in your personal collection. Also, call me. We'll brunch.
-- They're really getting their money out of the Stein puppet. Bless.
-- Hell's triumvirate included Satan, not Lucifer. Which means a crossover with Lucifer is still possible. Fun fact, in the comics the triumvirate in Hell stepped in to rule when Lucifer left to go open up his nightclub in LA. Which means it all totally works together if they can get Tom Ellis to make a stop in the Waverider. And then possibly he and Matt Ryan could share a torrid embrace and... I'm sorry, what were we talking about again?
-- That's like the third episode in a row where they've mentioned Damien Darhk. Dare we hope to see him again next season?
If you squint at it and assume that we missed an episode of plot development, this would easily be a four. Sadly, we can't, and so I can't in good conscience give it more than three out of four fantastic logos.

Mustang From Famed ‘Bullitt’ Car Chase Heads to Auction
Tumblr media
Steve McQueen piloted it in the movie “Bullitt,” and for the next 50 years it was mostly a ghost. Now it’s heading to auction, and the speedy dark-green 1968 Ford Mustang fastback is expected to break records when it crosses the block next week at a Mecum event in Florida.Bravely, its owner is offering the rusty, dented, largely unrestored car “without reserve,” which means it will sell to the highest bidder — however low that bid is.The seller, Sean Kiernan, a Tennessee horse farm owner, says he is not worried that the bid will be too low. He figures the price could approach $5 million. Certainly, he adds, the car will sell for more than the $3,500 his father, Bob, paid for it in 1974.It took only 10 minutes of screen time — the length of Hollywood’s most acclaimed movie car chase — for the Mustang (official color: Highland Green) to achieve immortality. McQueen himself raced it through the streets of San Francisco in pursuit of ill-fated evildoers in a black 1968 Dodge Charger. As its cinematic legend has grown over the years, it has become arguably the most iconic Mustang ever, out of more than 10 million sold since the model’s debut in 1964. But what happened to the one true Bullitt Mustang has been, until fairly recently, one of the great automotive mysteries.McQueen, who died of lung cancer in 1980, apparently owned it briefly, through his Solar Productions. In 1971, the company got rid of it and a sister model. Then it began its journey into obscurity, even as McQueen kept trying to find the car for his vast collection. He wanted the so-called hero car, not the second model used for interior and other static shots. But he couldn’t quite catch up with each successive owner. His best chance probably came when its second owner sold it to the Kiernans via a classified ad in a 1974 issue of Road & Track magazine. The ad read: “1968 ‘Bullett’ MUSTANG driven by McQueen in the movie … Can be documented. Best offer.” The ad (typo and all) included a phone number in New Jersey.McQueen tracked down Bob Kiernan in 1977 and wrote him: “I would like to appeal to you to get back my ’68 Mustang. I would like very much to keep it in the family, in its original condition as it was used in the film, rather than have it restored; which is simply personal with me.”Sean Kiernan still has the letter, to which his father did not respond. So the Mustang, still with its handling and horsepower enhancements added for movie duty, lived on as a daily commuter for the Kiernan family until it succumbed to clutch issues in 1980. It has been barn-bound most of the time since then. Its whereabouts finally started to leak out a couple of years ago, causing heart palpitations among the handful of outsiders in the know. An employee of Hagerty, the classic-car insurer, was called in to inspect and authenticate it, as was a Ford expert. The expert, Kevin Marti, said he gasped when he saw it: “Oh, my God, it’s real!” He said he had been called multiple times over the years to investigate other “Bullitt look-alikes.” Someone found the second Mustang in a junkyard in Mexico a few years ago; while still valuable, Mr. Marti noted, it does not have the same provenance or cachet as Mr. Kiernan’s hero car.“Ninety-eight percent of the original car is there,” he told Hagerty. “It’s an incredible artifact.”The question for Mr. Kiernan then became: What to do with it?A movie was discussed, but funding proved problematic. Ford, which has introduced two “Bullitt Mustang” homage models since 2008, was interested in showing it alongside its newer versions. Hagerty suggested placing it on the National Historic Vehicle Register.Ultimately, Mr. Kiernan decided to sell it. That decision wasn’t easy, he acknowledged, nor was his choice of the auction house to handle such a landmark sale. He selected Mecum, a less prestigious auctioneer perhaps than the big names in the business such as RM Sotheby’s and Gooding.RM sold a 1968 Ford GT40 used by McQueen as a camera car in the 1971 movie “LeMans” for $11 million in 2012. But RM also infamously botched the sale of a $20 million Porsche last year. Gooding and others specialize in full classics and European supercars. But cars from America’s so-called muscle car era are right in Mecum’s wheelhouse. Mecum also set a record in 2019 for sales of Mustang-based cars when it notched a $2.2 million sale for a 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake. The auction, on Jan. 10, will be televised on NBCSN, which is likely to result in even greater interest.Mr. Kiernan’s decision to offer the car in a no-reserve sale is highly unusual; historically significant cars typically might be offered with a reserve, or a minimum price the seller might accept. If the bidding did not meet the reserve price, the owner would retain the car.Mr. Kiernan decided, “I don’t want to sell the car twice.”A Hagerty spokesman, Jonathan Klinger, said Mr. Kiernan probably had no need to worry.“There is still a very active portion of collector-car culture that thinks of Steve McQueen as the ultimate car guy,” he said. “The King of Cool.”Mecum’s founder and president, Dana Mecum, estimates the Bullitt Mustang will sell for at least $3 million. McKeel Hagerty, the insurer’s chief executive, predicted something closer to $4 million.McQueen-owned or -driven cars have a history of fetching premiums. A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB by Scaglietti that he owned sold for $10.175 million in 2014. In 2015, Mecum sold McQueen’s 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo for $1.95 million — a good five times the value of a typical Porsche Turbo.Mr. Kiernan said he would be happy to see the Bullitt find a new home, even though it has been in his family for 45 years.“It has to go,” he said. “I only have a two-car garage.” Read the full article

Super Bowl commercials: Washington Post gets political, ‘Game of Thrones’ and Pepsi make splashes
Tom Hanks narrated the first-ever Super Bowl ad for The Washington Post, showcasing the importance of journalism and the Jeff Bezos-owned publication’s slogan, “Democracy dies in darkness.”
SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW: MAROON 5, TRAVIS SCOTT AND BIG BOI AVOID POLITICS
The spot aired in the fourth quarter and was one of the only commercials not to previously be released online.
The advertisement showed several journalists who’d gone missing or been killed, including Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered at the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul in October; Austin Tice, who’s been missing in Syria for six years; and Marie Colvin, an American war correspondent for The Sunday Times of London, who was killed in Syria in 2012.
Deadline estimates that The Washington Post spent upwards of $5 million for the ad.
Thankfully, there was also lighter fare.
CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP
“Game of Thrones” teamed up with Bud Light for a battle between The Mountain and “Bud Knight” — and it doesn’t end well for Knight, nor for the audience, which gets torched by a dragon.
Harrison Ford and Ilana Glazer starred in an ad for Amazon’s Echo, in which the “Bladerunner” star learns the hard way that Alexa shouldn’t let his dog order its own chow.
In an ad for Bubly sparking waters, Michael Buble is exasperated at how closely his name is pronounced with the brand.
Zoe Kravitz dabbled in ASMR for a Michelob Ultra commercial, showcasing the beer’s organic properties.
Pepsi, which sponsored the Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show, had a series of ads starring Steve Carell, but by far its most popular commercial featured not just “The Office” star, but also rappers Lil’ Jon and Cardi B, each delivering their own unique takes on “OK.”
Sarah Jessica Parker reprised her role as Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City” — and shocked everyone in the bar when, instead of ordering her character’s signature cosmopolitan, opted for a Stella Artois … and got some company from Jeff Bridges, who reprised his iconic role as “The Dude” from “The Big Lebowski.”
Jason Bateman took guests on what may well have been the elevator ride from hell, with stops including jury duty, a vegan dinner party and a root canal.
Sarah Michelle Gellar returned to her horror beginnings in a commercial for Olay, in which a masked intruder stalks her in her home — but this guy clearly didn’t know who he was up against. The ad was aptly hashtagged “#killerskin.”
Luke Wilson was a “close talker” in an ad for Colgate Total SF toothpaste. He previously told Fox News that his Super Bowl commercial was “nerve wracking” and that these were the most difficult lines he’s ever had to memorize.
Former New York Yankee turned Mr. Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, starred in a spot for Mr. Peanut with another nut — Charlie Sheen:
Christina Applegate embraced her sweet tooth in an ad for M&M’s chocolate bar. She stars as a driver for the candy-shell coated chocolates who’s had about enough of her colorful passengers
Tony Romo got lazy in a Skecher’s ad:
Adam Levine (who also performed at the Halftime Show with his band Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi) appeared in a Pampers ad with John Legend and Chrissy Teigen:
A man uses God-like powers to summon Ludacris to a party — among other things — in an Audi spot:
Adam Scott and rapper 2 Chainz appear in an ad for the app Expensify, with the rapper even recording a song for the commercial.
Chance the Rapper remixed the Backstreet Boys’ classic “I Want It That Way” for a bizarre Doritos commercial.
Serena Williams serves up some women’s empowerment for Bumble.
Antoinette “Toni” Harris shattered perceptions and glass ceilings for Toyota.

FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
Tumblr media
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
It's only later in the year that the ultra-rugged Model F Series will debut
With GM unveiling the ultra-rugged versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vans over the past few weeks, just like Ram did, Ford would soon be coming back. It is now done with the presentation of a reworked version of his own proposal in this segment, the model of the Super Duty series.
Tumblr media
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
For 2020, the big news is under the hood that it is. If there is still a 6.2-liter V8 engine in the base versions, a new 7.3-liter V8 gasoline engine is added to the index. The latter carries significant technical improvements
Tumblr media
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
"The new engine uses a new architecture of overhead cam valves with cast iron block and forged steel crankshaft. Variable valve timing port injection optimizes intake and exhaust for workload. Jets of oil cool the pistons under heavy loads. "
Tumblr media
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
The 6.7-liter V8 Power Stroke Diesel engine is in its third generation. He is advancing a new fuel injection system and new injectors that aim to optimize combustion, among other things.
Tumblr media
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
For all engines, the manufacturer's new Torqshift 10-speed gearbox is needed. Interesting note, despite four more reports than the replaced transmission, the unit is the same size and weighs only three and a half pounds more. As a bonus, the latter allows the vehicle to suggest different driving modes, namely specific to towing, slippery surfaces or deep snow or sand.
Tumblr media
FORD UNVEILS ULTRA-RUGGED VERSION OF ITS F-SERIES FOR 2020
No performance data has been advanced, but we can expect gains in power and capacity. Speaking of this aspect, all Super Duty models will be able to take advantage of the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system which facilitates the reverse operations. Wireless connectivity, along with some driving aids such as lane departure warning and emergency braking, will benefit the model.
Aesthetically, we can see changes to the height of the grid, LED lights and tailgate, among others. Inside, new materials and new colors are offered.
The ultra-rugged model of the F-Series will go on sale next fall. We will certainly have more details to give you the approach of its beginnings.

2020 Jeep Gladiator Review: You Know You Want This Off-Roading Pickup
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 4x4 Jan-Feb 2020 - Lisle NY Town Hall - Route 79
What you see is what you get with the 2020 Jeep Gladiator: It has the soul of a Jeep Wrangler SUV, which means it goes off-road. It has a pickup bed, which means it goes to and from Home Depot. And it has four doors and two rows of seats which (along with the pickup bed) means it’s more than 18 feet long, so even if the Gladiator goes everywhere, you can’t park it just anywhere.
The Gladiator rides alright, tows up to 7,500 pounds, and has a decent drivetrain. But highway handling is not great, wind noise is noticeable, and you have step up almost two feet to get in.  The cheapest Gladiator is $35,0o0, and the Gladiator Rubicon meant for serious off-roading tops $62,000. But if you can choose to get one, you’ll have fun.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 4×4 – a serious off-road Jeep with a 5-foot pickup bed.
30 Inches Longer than Jeep Wrangler
Jeep Wrangler SUV.
Jeep dates to World War II and the first General Purpose (GP, pronounced geepee and eventually jeep) light 4×4 utility, the first civilian Jeep (CJ) in 1945, and pickups produced 1947-1992. There was a 10-year gap until the first new Jeep pickup truck concept vehicle was shown briefly in 2003, with adaptations teased and reteased for 15 more years until the Gladiator pickup finally arrived last year, a gap of nearly 30 years. Too long.
Compared to the four-door Wrangler it is based on, the Gladiator is 30 inches longer overall, 218 inches vs. 188 inches, with a wheelbase 19 inches longer for a truly comfortable legroom in the rear seat. The Gladiator also tows more and costs more, but just $2,000 more comparing entry model to entry model. Both have easily-owner-removable doors and tops, which makes both fun crawling over boulders or sand dunes in good weather, and louder and sometimes harsh in day-to-day highway driving. No surprise there. Still, 75 mph on the highway in the Gladiator feels better than 55 mph did in a Jeep a generation ago.
Center stack bristles with buttons and knobs. Lever on left controls four-wheel-drive. If you can’t find the electric window controls on the door, they’re here, in the very middle of the picture.
Jeep Gladiator On- and Off-Road
I test-drove the nearly top-of-the line Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 4X4, $62,020 including a healthy $1,495 freight fee from the Toledo, Ohio, factory. The Rubicon is the most serious off-roader in the line. To get in, you have to step up almost two feet. Don’t even think about wearing a skirt. (Damn. And here I am, stuck with this new leather mini – Ed)  The front windshield is essentially a flat piece of glass. The doors are rudimentary. The center console and stack bristle with controls for the four-wheel-drive system but if it’s initially confusing, just press the starter, pull back on the main shift lever, and off you go.
Around town the Gladiator drives reasonably well and you feel as if you’re sitting up high. (You are since it’s 75 inches high.) On the highway, the road and wind noise builds from the lack of sound insulation and the big, knobby 33-inch (diameter) tires on the Rubicon. The steering feels imprecise at speed, meaning you sometimes make repeated small adjustments to keep it centered in the lane. The bucket seats are pretty flat, and some adjustments are manual. The front left wheel well is so big, there’s no room for a driver footrest. On bad road surfaces, you feel the bumps, although there’s less pitching than on the Wrangler with its shorter wheelbase. The Gladiator uses the sophisticated coil spring suspension of the Ram 1500 pickup and that helps. Another nice touch is the damped tailgate that comes down smoothly, rather than banging open.
Off-ready tires on the Gladiator Rubicon.
Once you’re off paved roads, the Gladiator is in its elements. The Rubicon has 11 inches of ground clearance and fords 30-inch streams with the doors on. It has a 43-degree slope approach angle. The front breakover angle, the measure of how steep an angle you can approach without scraping anything, is 20 degrees. The rear departure angle is 26 degrees. Both are less than the Wrangler because of the longer Gladiator wheelbase and the pickup bed.
There’s nothing else like this among midsize pickups in terms of off-roading.  The Gladiator Rubicon employs a two-speed power transfer (between front and rear wheels), locking front and rear differential to improve traction, a disconnecting front sway bar (it raises off-road clearance), Dana 44 front and rear axles, and a 77.2:1 crawl ratio for low-speed travel. An Off-Road+ mode that modulates stablity control, throttle, and gear selection. In 4WD High, it’s dialed in for romping in sand; in 4WD Low, for traversing rocks and small logs.
All this from a 3.6-liter, 285-hp V6 engine and eight-speed automatic that gets to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds. A V6 diesel is coming, expected this calendar year; it’s down 26 hp versus the V6 but the 442 pound of torque tops the gas V6 by 70 percent. The EPA rates the gasoline Gladiator at 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, 19 mpg combined on regular fuel. The six-speed manual also offered is rating at 16/23/19. Expect the diesel to boost mpg by 2-3 mpg or about 10 percent. A Rubicon weighs a bit more than 5,000 pounds, about 500 pounds more than the competing Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro or Ford Ranger Lariat SuperCrew 4×4, 300lbs more than the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2.
Want to ride bareback (Ialmost)? Undo a couple bolts and each of the doors comes off in a few minutes. The top comes off and the windshield folds flat.
Jeep Gladiator Models
There are five Jeep Gladiator model variants, or trim lines. Altogether, there are enough options to make the top of the line loaded Gladiator approach twice the base price of the entry model.
Gladiator Sport, $35,040, including $1,495 freight. Four-wheel drive is standard, as is a six-speed manual, and reasonable 17-inch steel wheels with 245/75R17 all-season tires with all-terrain tires optional. Seating fabric is cloth. The UConnect 3 infotainment screen is a modest 5 inches diagonal, with eight speakers, and there is a remote USB port, but a bigger LCD is not an option, nor is Apple CarPlay or HD Radio. The instrument panel multi-information is a 3.5-inch monochrome LCD. Towing capacity with the better of two options packages is 7,650 pounds. A Torx toolkit is included to remove the doors in just a few minutes.  Skid plates, tow hooks, and a soft top are standard.
Gladiator Sport S, $38,240. The Sport S goes upscale a bit, with alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows, heated power mirrors, auto-on headlamps, keyless entry, and a security alarm. A optional 7-Inch Radio Group makes satellite radio
Upper trim lines include an AC jack, and it’s not an extra-charge option.
Gladiator Overland, $41,890.  It steps up to a 7-inch center stack display, UConnect 4, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seven USB jacks. There are side steps, a 7-inch color multi-information display, 115-volt outlet, and garage opener. During 2019 production, this was the top end Gladiator focusing on comfort and smoother driving while still being able to match or beat most any all-wheel-drive vehicle off-road.
Gladiator Rubicon, $45,370. In addition to the serious off-roading features, it steps back down to 17-inch alloy wheels and offers optional driver assist features. Its top speed is governor-limited to 97 mph vs. 110 mph for other models.
Gladiator North Edition, $47,410. It’s the model for more comfortable cold weather driving. It has an 8.4-inch display with navigation, Alpine premium audio, cold weather group (remote start, heated seats, heated steering wheel), black hard top, and slush mats.
Gladiator Mohave, price TBA. Sold as a limited editon, it’s intended for higher speeds, up to 50 mph, in the low driving range. Most typically you’d be running sand dunes rather than creeping over rocks. It rides an inch higher than Rubicon and uses a different set of Fox shocks. The frame and suspension parts are even heavier duty to deal with a vehicle that might (correction: will, if you play hard) go airborne from time to time and land hard. The Max Tow towing package comes standard to get the more powerful cooling package. Pricing will be in line with the Rubicon-North Edition models, Jeep suggests.
The Gladiator comes with three or four serious tow hooks. The Gladiator Rubicon bumper is steel, allowing a winch to be added.
Options, Driver Assists Boost the Price
It’s the options that push the top Gladiator models into the sixties on pricing: higher-capacity tow package, LED Lighting Group, driver assist packages, a wireless Bluetooth speaker, forward-facing trail cam, three kinds of pickup bed covers, pickup bed cargo rails, premium alloy wheels, a modular hardtop (three pieces, separately removable), a hardtop liner for insulation, premium paints, premium audio, leather seats, and a winch-capable steel bumper. The eight-speed automatic raises the price by $2,000 alone.
Driver assists are options rather than standard. The Active Safety Group, $895, comprises blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. The Adaptive Cruise Control / Forward Collision Warning Package, $795, is what the name says. ACC goes down to 0 mph but will return to speed; it holds the car stopped for 3 seconds then disengages.  Lane departure warning / lane keep assist are not offered, nor is pedestrian detection.
There are two front airbags and two side airbags, but no side air curtains.
Bill Murray reprised Groundhog Day, this time in a Jeep Gladiator, during Super Bowl 54.
Gladiator Vs. the Competition
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator competes with several midsize trucks, most of which have an off-road version. They are, in order of end-of-2019 sales: Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, Honda Ridgeline, and GMC Canyon. The Gladiator sold 40,000 units in 2019, its first year, but didn’t reach full output and sales until the second half when it sold 33,000 units, the peak month being a bit over 6,000 in October. Sales may pick up in the wake of the the Super Bowl: The Bill Murray / Groundhog Day ad featuring the Gladiator was seen as the best ad of the game. In its first year, the Gladiator named a bunch of truck of the year awards including North American Truck of the Year from NACTOY.
If you just want to take a 4×4 pickup onto a dirt or gravel road with ruts and the occasional rock sticking up a bit, they’ll all get the job done. Others will be better at highway driving, smoother, and quieter. What the Gladiator offers is the Jeep aura, off-road abilities that go from good to great. For now you’ve got a very long vehicle with a roomy cockpit (front and back), and a shortish pickup bed. Jeep suggests other Gladiator size configurations will come.
This is definitely a car you want your partner or spouse to understand and appreciate before you sign the papers. See if you can test-drive it a couple miles on an interstate, not just local rounds. The Gladiator is no Jeep Grand Cherokee (upscale two-row SUV) if you want a smooth ride, quiet cockpit, and soft leather upholstery. And the Gladiator is one step ahead of the Grand Cherokee in going way-off-road, which Grand Cherokee in turn is one step ahead of most all other all-wheel-drive cars. Jeep understands unpaved roads and obstacles.
For serious off-roading, or if this is not your only car, the Gladiator Rubicon is the best choice. You’ll easily pay in the mid- to high-fifties on list price once you check the options you want, perhaps top $60,000.  A more cost-effective Gladiator is the Sport S with automatic transmission, hardtop and insulating liner, the two driver assist / safety packages, the 7-inch (LCD) radio group with CarPlay and Android Auto, the less costly trailer tow package, and a convenience group package required by one of the other options. That’s $43,165 before the incentives, so you might well wind up paying under $40K (see below).
(If you want the nicest all-round midsize pickup, that’s the Honda Ridgeline, the most car-like pickup. The Toyota Tacoma is another good choice. Toyota, Ford, Chevy and GMC make off-roading versions of their pickups.)
If you’ve shopped for a Jeep Gladiator over the past several months, you may know Jeep dealers were marking up the Gladiator, especially the Rubicon, by as much as $10,000, sometimes $20,000 (asking, if not getting) at mid-year when the Gladiator starting arriving in quantity. By year’s end, the markups were gone. Now, it’s Jeep that’s giving back money: a $2,000 incentive for virtually all buyers, $5,000 at many dealerships, and, says CarsDirect, as much as $9,000 in a few cases. Some incentives excluded the Rubicon.
The bottom line on the Jeep Gladiator is that it’s a little rough as a highway cruiser and many contractors / tradesmen want a bigger bed for hauling stuff, but it’s great off-roading, and it has character in droves.

Three Competitions and Three Champions open New Jamboree Season
Summer is coming, but before the heat comes in, there are still a few things that many are wanting to do during the spring season.  May has been a wet month for most of the country, including the northeast areas of Ohio.  What that normally means is that more rain is expected, specifically during one weekend a year.
As always, when Bonnier Corporation comes rolling into town to host their annual O’Reilly Auto Parts 4-Wheel Jamboree showcase at the Allen County Fairgrounds in the town of Lima, it seemed as though Mother Nature circled the dates on the calendar.  Three of the last four years have seen tremendous downpours, making the infield a quagmire of mud, slop, water and sometimes ice depending on the area.  Many fans were thinking it would be more of the same, even after the dates were moves ahead after the 2017 season.
However, even Mother Nature decided it was time for a break, and the fans that came out on Friday were welcomed with something that has not been seen much…THE SUN.  It was an absolutely picturesque opening day, and many fans were already clamoring to get a look at the monster field that were going after the General Tire Thunder Drags championships.
Five of the six trucks were familiar, with either a new look or a bit of a swap.  Last year’s champions were all represented.  The Hall Brothers brought back their General Tire sponsored truck, with Kurt Kraehmer again at the wheel.  But, the co-champion from racing, the Raminator, was instead piloted by the second-in-line from the HBR camp, Mat Dishman, who competed here last year in the Rammunition machine.
Sharing that racing championship was the original team, the Bigfoot camp, and Christian Norman was back at the wheel of the #18 chassis with the Lucas Oil machine.  But, his truck took on both a new look, with a subtle ode to the past.
Gone was the golden look, and instead returning was the red, white and blue colors that ran on the truck dating back to 2014.  Yet, the painters at the shop decided to deck out the 2019 Ford Raptor with a very subtle hint to a past champion from the Foot organization.  The scheme took a very honorable ode to the 1993 scheme that Hall of Fame driver Andy Brass piloted when he was at the wheel of the then-new Bigfoot #11.  That truck wasn’t blue, but instead carried a teal, white and yellow scheme that represented many new innovations to the truck, which for the jamboree tour was named Wildfoot.
Even Norman got in on the fun, using Instagram to say he was “Rocking a WILD looking FOOT in Lima.”  It seemed to fit, because many caught on and decided to call it the “Lucas Oil Wildfoot,” and it seemed to stick.
The veteran of the field, Mike Vaters, returned with his Black Stallion, and was joined by his son and defending freestyle champion on the tour, Mikey Vaters, in the Overkill Evolution Super Duty, ready to tear up the infield.  But, the sixth truck in the field was a true newcomer to the tour, but he already had a solid reputation coming in, and was not laying down for anyone.
The lone Chevrolet in the field, Brandon Derrow finally got to fulfill a dream he had as a kid, running the jamboree tour, and he was doing so in Bad News Travels Fast.
Just as classic as some of the trucks have been for the jamboree tour, once again the WHR Motorsports crew put forth an excellent Penda-style track to race on, meaning reaction time, control, and horsepower were going to be key.  Along with that, the entire infield had a few tough obstacles to use for freestyle, including the jumps for the tough trucks, the turning tires, but also a wheelie/popper bump on the frontstretch made with loader tires, and a pair of tall, almost 10-foot quad jumps that could be hit from all sides that could lead to wheelstands and sky jumps.  Not one car was set up for use, meaning the track would hold up to the abuse that was coming.
After enjoying the sun the entire day, the crowd came to the grandstands and saw the field of trucks roll out, and all were ready for competition to start not just the weekend, but the entire season.
Round one had the strong matchups that were expected, thanks to the draw for positions, but it had one upset as in his first race on the tour, Derrow hooked up strong and moved into the second round, taking out Vaters Jr.
Dishman and Norman moved on, with Vaters Jr. getting the nod as fast loser, but it was Dishman who made the big move as he took the Raminator to the finals after eliminating Derrow.  Norman fell out after a close loss to Vaters Jr, setting up a matchup that took place three different times last year, Raminator against Overkill Evolution.
Both trucks hooked up hard, especially since Vaters Jr. had a scare when the truck wouldn’t fire up in the pits.  But each kept it close, coming to the final jump even.  But the near lane with Dishman seemed to hook up better, and the Goodyear cleats he was running proved it, as he edged out the Super Duty for the opening win of the season, something he has done two years in a row and hopes will lead to more.
FRIDAY RACING:
Round 1:  Raminator def. Black Stallion; Bad News Travels Fast def. Overkill Evolution; Lucas Oil Bigfoot def. General Tire.
Semi-Finals:  Raminator def. Bad News Travels Fast; Overkill Evolution-FL def. Lucas Oil Bigfoot.
Championship:  Raminator def. Overkill Evolution.
After racing, the tough trucks got in a few qualifying rounds, as they were setting up their elimination bracket to take place on Sunday afternoon.  But, the crowd then got a surprise, that not even the photographers expected that were standing along the fence line.  For the first time ever at the jamborees, the crowd was getting a chance to decide a winner, as they were going to determine the first-ever winner of the General Tire Best Trick competition.
Each truck got two hits to try and impress the crowd, and it seemed in the beginning, wheelies and donuts were going to be the way to go.
Derrow seemed to think that as he tried to get the Bad News Chevrolet to hook up a pair of times, but only managed to get the wheels up to about a 50-degree angle.  It was Dishman that seemed to then stand the crowd up on its feet, pulling off a bar-dragging wheelie and a very fast set of cyclones to put him in the lead.
But then, Vaters Jr. hit the track.
What he did was decide it was time to up the game, and he lined up at the backside of the final racing jump, and crawled to put the wheels on the edge.  A burp of the throttle brought the rear wheels up, and the grille to the ground, and right away grabbed reverse to walk the truck backwards in a perfectly executed popper-stoppie-moonwalk.  He did it once, then twice, almost putting the truck on it’s side, but the crowd certainly seemed to enjoy it, as he handily took home the first-ever jamboree trick competition.
Once the infield got cleared out of all the crews and officials, it was time to close out the evening with freestyle, and the crowd was in for a treat.
The newcomer came out in mid-pack, and Derrow finally got to show what his seasoned chassis was capable of.  Despite not being able to do so in the trick competition, he finally managed to get the Chevrolet Silverado to drag the wheelie bar across the dirt, not just on the front stretch, but also thanks to a huge rebound from the quad jump in turn three that allowed the grandstands to see the underside of the truck.  It was evident he was ready to play on this day, putting down a run that gave him the early lead.
Norman then came out and got to show his wild side in Bigfoot, and he put on a run that was one of the best he had on the outdoor tour.  It included a pair of launches over each quad plateau, but after finally getting the shocks set up where he was comfortable, he pulled a pair of bar-dragging wheel-stands down the front stretch that dug up the dirt and gravel.
The crowd saluted the man at the wheel of Bigfoot, or as he was hinting, “Wildfoot,” and left it up to Vaters Jr. and Dishman to top him.
The Overkill Evolution crew saw the nose of the truck get torn up a bit after the trick competition, so when it came to freestyle, he was missing the front clip, or “dog house” as the late Gary Lee always said, but he still came out and made a decent run, yet it seemed to be a performance where he was saving his equipment for the next day, as he rolled back to the pits seemingly unsatisfied.  Then, it was up to Dishman to see if he could double up on the night.
He had a strong run going, including a strong set of donuts and another wheelstand, but he had to tone it down as during one of his late hits, a wheeze of air could be heard from the truck.  It was discovered when his run ended, the left rear tire appeared to get dirt caught between the tire and the rim, causing air to slowly come out.  Although these tires are only inflated at 10-15 psi, a low tire, just like in a passenger vehicle, can cause it to handle differently.
A strong run by the HBR racing winner was not enough, and the fans plus officials agreed that it was Norman making the crowd react the best, as he took home his first win of 2019.
Day one for Lima has ended, but day two is filled with an enormous amount of activities, including a pair of appearances by Captain America.  But, the monsters have a pair of events to satisfy the fans, starting with a 1:30 p.m. racing, trick, and freestyle program.  Then at 6:30 p.m. the crowd will get to enjoy a freestyle-only night to close the festivities.
Tickets can still be bought at the gate, so get out and see for yourself what these drivers can do.
