Les Kia Telluride, Chevrolet Tahoe et Mahindra...

Lorsque j’ai pris possession d’un superbe VUS Telluride de Kia le mardi suivant mon retour de Cuba, mon idée était de le comparer à son jumeau, le Hyundai Palisade. En effet, ces deux véhicules sont issus de la même provenance, le groupe Hyundai-Kia de Corée du Sud. Et, mécaniquement, les deux camionnettes sont pareilles ou presque. Quant au design, il provient des studios des deux boîtes qui sont sous la gouverne de Peter Schreyer, réputé designer en chef des deux compagnies qui s’était auparavant fait un nom alors qu’il travaillait pour Audi. Quand les Sud-Coréens ont su l’attirer chez eux, ce fut un véritable coup de maître. On le voit bien dans le design des véhicules des deux marques cousines.

Toutefois, au moment même où je mettais la main sur le Telluride, j’ai aussi découvert le tout dernier numéro du grand magazine américain Motor Trend et telle ne fut pas ma surprise de voir en page couverture le VUS de l’année choisi par l’équipe de la publication…le Kia Telluride !

En effet, selon les juges de Motor Trend, ce VUS Kia a battu de «grosses pointures» dont les plus récents Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes GLS, Audi E-Tron, BMW X5, Subaru Outback et même les Lincoln Corsair et surtout Aviator, ce dernier ayant été tant vanté par la presse à son dévoilement. 

Vu de l’arrière, le Telluride se reconnaît à ses grands feux distinctifs. Ironiquement, il n’y a qu’une seule pointe (dédoublée) d’échappement pour le moteur V6 alors que tant de constructeurs adoptent les échappements double pour de petits quatre cylindres en ligne! (Photo Éric Descarries)

Si le Telluride est un jumeau presque parfait du Hyundai Palisade, il affiche quand même un style qui semble plus agressif, plus robuste que celui du Palisade. Incidemment, le Telluride (nom d’une ville des montagnes du Colorado) est construit aux usines américaines de Kia à West Point en Georgie (É.U.). Comme vous pouvez le constater, ce grand VUS est un volumineux véhicule à quatre portes capable d’accepter au moins sept passagers. C’est la deuxième fois que Kia s’aventure dans le créneau des grands VUS (après la courte carrière du Borrego) mais cette fois semble la bonne.

L’intérieur du Telluride est aussi presque identique à celui du Palisade. Même le tableau de bord y est presque pareil. Cependant le Telluride a une console différente car au lieu des boutons-pressoir pour les changements de rapports de la boîte de vitesses du Palisade, il y a un levier traditionnel avec la possibilité de «jouer» avec les rapports. Toutefois, malgré les matériaux différents et les couleurs spécifiques, l’intérieur des deux véhicules présente la même configuration toujours avec une finition qui pourrait faire pâlir la concurrence d’envie! Incidemment, mon Telluride d’essai avait aussi ce merveilleux accessoire qui affiche une image derrière le véhicule lorsqu’on actionne le clignotant!

Les places d’avant sont vraiment confortables offrant une vue dominante de la route. Les places du centre sont tous aussi confortables grâce aux sièges baquet ajustables qui se rabattent facilement soit pour faciliter l’accès à la banquette arrière, soit pour agrandir l’espace cargo. Cette dernière banquette arrière demeure, toutefois, un peu juste pour de grands passagers. Elle est mieux adaptée aux enfants!

Malgré l’espace qu’occupent les sièges relevés, il y a quand même un peu d’espace de chargement pour les bagages de deux occupants. Sinon, on rabat tout simplement les dossiers de la troisième banquette et on obtient vraiment beaucoup de place. Évidemment, avec tous les dossiers repliés, c’est un véritable gouffre que présente le Telluride, une caractéristique semblable à celle du Palisade.

Le seul moteur disponible dans le Telluride demeure le V8 de 3,8 litres de Kia. Iici, on voit bien que le moteur est placé transversalement vu que les Telluride et Palisade sont, de base, à traction avant! (Photo Éric Descarries)

Comme mentionné plus haut, la mécanique du Telluride est presque identique à celle du Palisade. Sous le véhicule se cache une plateforme de traction avant adaptée pour la traction intégrale. Le seul moteur disponible est ce même V6 Hyundai-Kia de 3,8 litres à double arbre à cames en tête qui fait 291 chevaux et 262 li-pi de couple. Il vient avec la seule boîte de vitesses au catalogue, une automatique à huit rapports. Évidemment, ce Telluride était aussi à traction intégrale (la version de base est à traction!) dont le différentiel central peut être verrouillé pour des conditions extrêmes. Cette camionnette a une capacité de remorquage de 5000 livres.  

Sur la route

Bien entendu, mes impressions de conduite du Telluride ressemblent énormément à celles du Palisade. Même volant un peu tendre, même freins adéquats mais pas surprenants, même bonne visibilité, même accélération (soit environ 8 secondes pour atteindre le cap des 100 km/h) et ainsi de suite. Cependant, ce que j’ai pu expérimenter, c’est le comportement du Telluride sur la neige (il en avait suffisamment pour l’apprécier) qui, sans nécessairement passer en mode Neige selon la commande à la console, était nettement à la hauteur de la situation.

À noter que les pneus d’origine du Kia avaient été remplacés par des Yokohama IceGuard G075 très efficaces et que légèrement bruyant. La tenue de route est agréable et la conduite stable. La plus grande partie de mes déplacements se sont faits en conditions urbaines et le grand Telluride s’est avéré facile à garer, du moins dans les stationnements de centre commercial. Notez que, étant de base à traction avant, le rayon de braquage en est un plus grand. Mais pour les manœuvres, on peut remercier les diverses caméras!

Pour la consommation, alors que le Palisade m’avait donné une moyenne de consommation de 12,84 l./100 km. alors que l’ordinateur de bord affichait 11,0, le Telluride m’a permis une moyenne de 14,75 (tandis que le tableau de bord indiquait 12,5), un différence facilement explicable avec les temps froids des dernières semaines comparativement au temps plus doux des jours d’essai du Palisade. Autre facteur d’importance, tandis que le Palisade venait avec une facture finale de 53 999 $ plus les frais de transport, le Telluride d’essai dont il est question ici (et qui serait l’égale, en équipement, au Palisade) affichait un prix de 52 190 $ incluant les frais de transport (1895 $), la peinture spéciale (200 $) et les 100 $ des taxes fédérales d’accise pour la climatisation.

L’autre grande nouvelle, c’est que les grands VUS de Chevrolet seront désormais disponibles avec un moteur turbodiesel à six cylindres de 3,0 litres autres que les V8 à essence de 5,3 et 6,2 litres! On a hâte de les essayer!

Ce serait un Mahindra Thar, le «grand frère» du Roxor que nous avons ici au Québec. Je m’en doutais un peu… Ironiquement, de ce que j’ai appris, Mahindra aurait toujours des droits de reproduction de Jeep qui dateraient d’après-guerre. Mais il n’est pas question de commercialiser ces véhicules ailleurs qu’en Inde.
