For the car-spotters amongst us, we have an XE series (1982-84) Ford Falcon taxicab in the foreground.  There’s an example of the previous model Falcon, the 1979-82 XD series behind the yellow Toyota ute in the middle of the picture.  Coming up behind the taxi is a 1980-86 Mitsubishi L300 Express, a minibus once very popular with everyone from families to tradesmen, but hardly the most durable of people-movers and long since disappeared from Aussie roads.  The 80s Falcons didn’t fare much better since they rusted all too readily and their plasticky interior fittings would perish with age.
Dominating the background is Centrepoint Tower, construction of which began in 1970 and opened in August 1981.  Another point of interest is an example of a typical Ampol petrol station.  The Ampol story began in 1936 when its founder, Sir William Gaston Walkley, created the Australian Motorists Petrol Company (AMP) in response to concerns about unfair petrol prices and transfer pricing by foreign oil companies.  The group listed on the stock exchange in 1949 as Ampol Petroleum, then was acquired and delisted in 1988 by Pioneer, the largest Australian retailer and distributor at that time.  Caltex Australia revealed its plan to revive Ampol (in name only) just before Christmas 2019 after US oil giant Chevron terminated its licensing agreement, removing the Australian company's right to use the Caltex name.
The first of the new Ampol-branded sites are expected in Sydney and Melbourne in the second half of 2020, followed by a national rollout in 2021. The full transition of all 2000 sites is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

Coronavirus Live Updates: An American Dies of the Virus in Wuhan, China
An American has died from the coronavirus in Wuhan.
A United States citizen has died from the new coronavirus in Wuhan, China, in what appeared to be the first death of an American from the outbreak.
Few details about the American, who died on Thursday, were immediately available. The person was around 60 years old, according to the United States Embassy in Beijing. Two people familiar with the matter said the person was a woman and had underlying health conditions.
“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss,” said a spokesman for the embassy. “Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we have no further comment.”
Car factories are idling in China, raising global concerns.
Chinese car and car-parts factories may stay closed longer than expected because of the coronavirus, increasing the chances that assembly lines in Asia, Europe and the United States could grind to a halt because of shortages of components.
Several automakers including BMW, PSA and Toyota have delayed restarting their assembly lines in China by another week, and others appear likely to follow suit. Even a relatively brief interruption in the flow of parts and materials could have far-reaching effects, analysts said.

The shutdowns at Chinese factories have hit automakers from several angles. The virus is already causing them to lose sales in China, the world’s largest car market by far. If they are forced to shut down factories outside of China because of parts shortages, as Hyundai has already done in South Korea, they could also lose sales in other regions.
The blow to the auto industry, which employs eight million people worldwide, comes at a time when output from the world’s factories is already sagging. It is likely to amplify the human and economic cost of the outbreak.
Hong Kong, a wounded city, sustains another blow.
Hong Kong had already suffered through months of political protests. Its economy is shrinking, and mistrust divides its people from its leaders.
Now the coronavirus is dealing Hong Kong, Asia’s financial capital, another devastating blow. Airlines are cutting service. Schools are closed. Panicked residents are hoarding rice, face masks and — in the latest run — toilet paper.
In the air is a new emotion for a city where the glimmering skyline once seemed to promise riches and opportunity: fear.
“We don’t know when it will end or how much worse it will get,” said Amber Suen, a flight attendant with Cathay Pacific, the beleaguered Hong Kong airline that on Wednesday asked its 27,000 employees to take three-week unpaid furloughs to save money.
The new coronavirus, which has killed hundreds and sickened thousands in mainland China, has been much less prevalent in Hong Kong. One person has died and at least 25 have been infected, mostly while traveling in the mainland. Its hospitals are respected around the world.
The world is not drawing a distinction, however, in part because the city has tightened but not fully closed the border with the mainland.
The multinational companies that helped make the city global are restricting travel there. Some are advising or requiring returning employees to quarantine themselves. And getting to Hong Kong is becoming increasingly difficult. Virgin Australia joined United Airlines and American Airlines in cutting service. Italy has suspended flights from Hong Kong, while the Philippines and Taiwan are requiring arrivals to go into quarantine.
Deaths in China reach 722, and infections climb past 34,000.
The death toll and the number of infections have grown again, according to official data released early Saturday.
Across China, 86 new deaths and 3,399 new cases emerged in the previous 24 hours, the national health authorities said.
The new figures brought the total number of deaths in China to at least 722. And the total number of confirmed cases rose to 34,546.
Most of the newly reported deaths, 81, occurred in Hubei Province, the heart of the outbreak.
Many doctors believe that deaths and infections in China are undercounted because hospitals and laboratories are under severe strain to test for the virus.
Travel to Asia slows, even to destinations far from China.

Hard data on cancellations is scarce, as airlines, hotels and travel boards say they do not yet have numbers or will not share them. But tour operators, travel insurance brokers and airline employees say they are facing growing numbers of customers changing their plans.
Brian Fitzgerald, president of Overseas Adventure Travel, a company providing group tours to travelers mostly over 50, said it encountered cancellations to China through April in the wake of the outbreak’s announcement. But this week, he said, tourists scheduled to go to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam were reconsidering as well.
January data from April Travel Protection, an insurance provider, which tracks residents in the United States traveling to every country in the world, shows that claims with an Asian country in the itinerary more than doubled compared to January 2019.
More than 20 international carriers have suspended or restricted routes that ended in Wuhan and other major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Introducing the Toyota GR Supra A90 Edition
The all-new Toyota GR Supra, the fifth generation of Toyota’s legendary sports car and the first global GR model to be produced by Toyota GAZOO Racing, has made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Conceived as a sports car in its purest form, the new Toyota GR Supra builds on the heritage of Toyota’s past Supra generations and the 2000GT sports car with its classic layout of a front-mounted, straight-six engine driving the rear wheels.
Driving enthusiasts can look forward to an exhilarating blend of power, agility and precision handling, achieved thanks to the car’s combination of a short wheelbase and wide track, light weight, low centre of gravity and highly rigid body. 
The 3.0-litre engine benefits from a twin-scroll turbocharger and produces 250kW and 500Nm of torque. Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it is characterised by smooth and powerful acceleration, with large amounts of torque available across the full range of engine speeds.
Toyota GAZOO Racing was instrumental in honing the new sports car’s performance, working extensively on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife and surrounding roads in Germany in order to achieve the most agile, stable and rewarding handling. Further testing was also carried out on roads around the world, including in Australia with chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.
To be certain that the car delivered on its promise, Toyota president Akio Toyoda put it to the test at the Nürburgring in his role as a master driver before giving it the final green light. Mr Toyoda said he had developed his craft as a master driver by spending countless hours driving an old Supra at the Nürburgring.
“Even though Toyota had no plans to make a new Supra, just like a lot of other diehard Supra fans around the world, I secretly wanted to make it happen,” he said. “The new GR Supra was born through testing at Nürburgring, and I can honestly say that it is a car that is fun to drive and better than ever.”
On the local front, the new Toyota GR Supra will be launched mid-2019. All vehicles will be built in Graz, Austria.
Pure sports car design
Toyota’s great sports car heritage is referenced in the design of the new Toyota GR Supra. The landmark 2000GT’s influence is evident in the long bonnet, compact body and double-bubble roof, while the distinctive look of the fourth generation Supra is captured with its muscular rear wings and the arc of the integrated spoiler.
The new Toyota GR Supra also shares the same classic sports car format of a powerful front-mounted six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive as its celebrated predecessors.
Supra’s design theme was first previewed in the dramatic FT-1 concept car, styled by Toyota’s CALTY studio in California and revealed at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Toyota Supra chief designer Nobuo Nakamura gave his team a simple brief around the concept of “Condensed Extreme”, ensuring they were free to express their vision of a pure and individual sports car in a truly original design.
“Condensed Extreme” refers directly to the vehicle’s packaging, comprising three principal elements: a short wheelbase, large wheels and wide stance; a taut, two-seat cabin; and a long bonnet with a compact body that reflects the drivetrain combination of in-line six engine and rear-wheel drive.
Nakamura’s vision for an indisputably modern design that evoked the romance of classic sports car styling resulted in a car that approached the limits of what could be manufactured in higher volume, in particular the powerful curves of the rear. 
In the finished design, the “Condensed” theme is evident in the relationship between the Toyota GR Supra’s large-diameter tyres, short wheelbase and overall length. The wheelbase is shorter than in the 86 coupe, and the tyres are larger.
“Extreme” is interpreted in the car’s wide stance, with tight cabin proportions and a wide track -contributing to a high level of manoeuverability and stability. The design was precisely calculated to achieve both optimum drag and lift characteristics, and an ideal front/rear weight balance.
The front styling was inspired by the fourth generation Supra, but has an even more expressive look with a low stance emphasised by a prominent central grille flanked by large air intakes that are essential for engine cooling.
In side view, the low bonnet generates a dynamic line that flows rearwards from the car’s low nose, while the back edge of the bonnet and the rear spoiler are set at almost the same height, linked by a low belt line.
The underbody has a slight forward angle while the cabin has a strong rearward slant, with blacked-out front pillars and character lines on the side of the roof emphasising the taut, compact cabin. Sharp-looking, sturdy sills express the car’s high rigidity.
At the rear, the arching lip spoiler has been optimised to suppress lift, while a trapezoidal shape to the rear bumper generates a sense of movement down and out towards the tyres.
Cockpit concept: putting the driver at the centre of the action
The driver’s cockpit in the new Toyota GR Supra neatly combines traditional GT elements with ultra-modern functionality. Designed to help the driver focus entirely on the business of driving, it is directly influenced by the layout found in single-seater race cars.
A low, slim, horizontal dashboard maximises the forward view through the windscreen, helping the driver place the car with precision in high-speed driving. The principal controls are tightly grouped for quick and easy operation. The instrument panel, centre console and door trim combine in a seamless design that gives the cockpit a strong, unified feel.
The shape of the cockpit flows down into soft, supportive knee pads in the door trim and on the side of the centre console, their shape calculated with the benefit of Toyota GAZOO Racing’s circuit racing experience. 
An asymmetric centre console marks a clear division between the enveloping driver’s cockpit and the more open passenger side of the Toyota GR Supra’s cabin.
The boot space is large enough for two people’s luggage for a weekend away and can be extended with a removable panel at the back of the cabin, creating enough space for a golf bag or all the personal kit needed for a track day.
Racing-inspired seats
The new Toyota GR Supra’s seats have a racing-influenced design that ensures comfort at all times and excellent support, in particular if the car is being used on-track. Body-holding side bolsters are featured on the cushion and the high back and there is an integrated head restraint.
Engine performance
The performance heart of the new Toyota GR Supra is its 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, producing up to 250kW and 500 Nm of torque. It is fitted with a twin-scroll turbocharger, high-precision direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve control that secure segment-leading torque performance from very low revs. The powerful, well-balanced, smooth and light revving engine delivers an exhilarating acceleration feel.
It is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission that provides lightning-fast up and downshifts, with short ratios selected for the lower gears. The driver can take control of gear changes using paddle shifts on the steering wheel and can select Normal or Sport driving modes to suit their preference and the conditions. 
A Launch Control function enables powerful acceleration from standstill with maximum traction, helping the car move from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. 
Engine sound and response, shift pattern, damping, steering and active differential performance are adjusted when the driver selects Sport mode. The vehicle stability control has a special “track” setting that can be selected, reducing the level of system intervention so the driver has greater control of the vehicle’s dynamic performance.
Active differential
An active differential that operates both when accelerating and decelerating and can seamlessly adjust from zero to full, 100% lock, with instant response – will be available on GR Supra.
A dedicated ECU monitors a wide range of inputs, including steering wheel, throttle and brake pedal operation, engine speed and yaw rate, for appropriate triggering of the actuator.
It delivers huge benefits in stability and efficiency when the tyres are reaching their performance limit. The effect is felt in all phases of cornering, with increased stability during the braking and cornering phases and then maximum grip as the driver accelerates out of the bend.
Intensive handling development program
High structural rigidity (greater even than the Lexus LFA supercar), a centre of gravity lower than the 86 coupe and ideal 50:50 front/rear weight distribution were fundamental to achieving the dynamic goals.
This required bold engineering decisions; for example, the desired weight balance was gained by moving the engine as far as possible rearwards, which introduced new production challenges. 
The high body rigidity allowed for more precise and detailed refinements to the suspension geometry and tuning of the shock absorbers.
The new suspension design comprises double-joint spring MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link system at the rear. The front suspension sub-frame and control arm mounting points have been made extremely rigid to yield precise cornering characteristics, while the use of aluminium for the control arms and swivel bearings reduces the car’s unsprung weight, giving superior agility and efficiency.
The new GR Supra also features high-performance wheel hubs with sports-tuned electric power steering. The rear suspension benefits from a similarly lightweight design for the rigid sub-frame and the bracing that connects it to the body, helping ensure extremely precise wheel control.
To prioritise the car’s agility and handling, engineers achieved a 1.55:1 “golden ratio” between the wheelbase length and track width.
High specification level
The Toyota GR Supra’s specification extends to high-performance features and systems to help the driver enjoy the car’s full dynamic potential. These include an active differential, adaptive variable suspension, and available 19-inch forged alloy wheels with a high-performance brake package. Supra is also equipped with an extensive list of advanced safety features.
Toyota GAZOO Racing
Toyota GAZOO Racing is the umbrella organisation for Toyota’s global motorsport program. In the past year, it has won both the Le Mans 24 Hours in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the manufacturers’ championship in the FIA World Rally Championship.
Its work is based on three pillars: developing people through participation in motorsport; creating fans through the excitement of motorsport; and applying the knowledge gained from motorsport to make ever-better cars for the road that are fun to drive.

Automobile was one of a handful of media outlets invited to preview the Supra race car in Charlotte, North Carolina, at Toyota’s race facility there, and then in the wind tunnel. The composite-body Supra makes for a handsome race car, though the only real design tips from the street model are the nose, the tail, and the rear side window, which is essentially a window-looking decal, as it is on all the approved NASCAR models.
As with everything NASCAR approves, each new car must perform in the wind tunnel at essentially the same level as every other car. Aside from the nose and tail, the Xfinity Supra is pretty much the Camry, including under the skin, down to the 5.8-liter pushrod V-8 with a carburetor (fuel injection hasn’t leaked down from the Monster Energy Cup series yet), and a four-speed manual transmission. We don’t have the precise specs for the 2020 Supra street car yet—it’s due next spring—but we’re pretty sure it will be lighter than the Xfinity car (which weighs 3,400 pounds with a driver), and shorter (the Xfinity car is nearly 204 inches long, about the same as a Chevrolet Tahoe).
What we do know about the consumer Supra is that it has been developed in concert with BMW, much like the Toyota 86 is a near-twin to the Subaru BRZ. But the Toyota will be a coupe, while the new BMW Z4 will be purely a convertible. And power will come not from a V-8, but a six-cylinder. Both cars will be built in Austria—no big deal for NASCAR. After all, the Chevrolet SS was built in Australia.
Not surprisingly, the Toyota drivers and teams that have seen the new Supra are, in a word so often used in NASCAR, “excited.”
“I’m hoping to be the first guy to get Supra to victory lane,” said Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver Kyle Busch, “but I’m sure there are a few other Toyota drivers thinking the same thing.”

Just ask Toyota, because as the largest manufacturer of motor vehicles in the world – it’s going to be the one calling the shots.
Per usual there were lots of weird, wonderful and wacky cars at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, but an overlooked snippet was a probable date for the end of petrol and diesel power.
Toyota revealed that traditional piston-engined motors would disappear from its vehicles in just over 20 years – or the year 2040 to be exact.
In their place will be hydrogen fuel cell, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
“Around 2040 the very simple gasoline engines or diesel engines are reduced to zero,” Toyota’s Advanced R&D and Engineering president, Kiyotaka Ise, said.
“But they may be used in the form of hybrid vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles.”
That’s where the conversation stopped, but to prove the point, it showed its weird all-wheel drive TJ Cruiser Concept – a design said to have been inspired by a toolbox.
It’s a hybrid, and more of a minivan than a 4WD.
The Tokyo Motor Show, one of the biggies of the world car shows, was almost entirely about Japanese cars – not so surprising considering Toyota is the global sales leader and, with its homegrown rivals, accounts for a huge slice of the world market.
The Americans were totally absent, but there was a token Euro presence, mainly from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and VW.
The Toyota 86 sports coupe on show was also a hybrid, still with a petrol engine up front, but also with a mid-mounted battery.
The Fine-Comfort Ride – what a name – had a reverse-wedge design, with the widest seating up front and growing narrower towards the tail.
The futuristic interior has four round seats that can rotate to face each other, a wrap-around two-seat rear bench and its fuel cells tucked away under the floor.
Subaru gave a glimpse of what its next WRX/WRX STi might look like with its Viziv Performance Concept.
That one still has petrol power with a drivetrain similar to the current models, though the body uses a lot of carbon fibre in a bid to to lower weight.
The Lexus LS+ doesn’t look much different from the latest LS, but the focus is on communicating autonomous capabilities from the outside the car and on the inside, it will do all sorts of things via your and its own voice.
Mitsubishi ‘s e-Evolution drew a lot of attention because of its vast glass that allows the driver to see all four corners, and its electric power.

Mazda’s Kai Concept, touted as the next-gen Mazda3 concept, was the sleekest car on show, with a fluid new design that makes it look long and fast.
Under its snoot might well be Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X direct petrol injection engine, which will start appearing in various Mazdas from 2019.
Nissan’s IMx Concept uses what it calls ProPilot drive, a fully autonomous system where the ‘drivder’ doesn’t do any driving.
The seats are in a recliner mode, so you relax and the electric car takes you where you want to go, provided it’s within the battery’s 600km operating range.
The car should be more than quick, with some 320kW on tap for its all-wheel drive.
Nissan says the aim is to expand its EV LEAF to many other models.
Honda had a big win at the show with its Sports EV, a hottie that fits in between Civic Type-R and the NSX supercar.
There was also one called the Urban EV and if any ever arrive in Australia it’s a safe bet here will be a rush for ‘Keith’ private plates.
Honda also showed its Assist-e concept motorcycle: one that won’t topple over at the traffic lights.
It should delight millions of would-be riders afraid of dropping their bike and unable to lift it up again.
Honda already has 28 million bike owners around the world, mostly on one of its Cub models, but the Assist-e concept could add more millions.
It’s a terrific machine, with electric power and impossible to fall off thanks to balance control systems from Honda’s Asimo robotics project.
Concept vehicles are just that, and many remain so.
But more than a few become reality in a pretty short space of time.
The Toyota aim of switching off petrol and diesel by 2040 will spook a lot of people.
Think fuel companies, servos, classic car owners, Formula 1.
And will mechanics become electricians?
