Then again, maybe we won’t miss fancy leather seats after experiencing the Onyx-specific StarTex upholstery. Really, an Outback is no less an Outback if its seats have cloth, StarTex, or premium Java Brown Nappa leather. In a time when a few SUVs are offered without AWD available at any price, it’s ironic that a lifted AWD wagon with easy-to-use retractable crossbars exemplifies one of the original purposes of SUVs: high functionality with some space for people and their stuff. Yet the Outback’s promise is more than that; this Subaru marries capability with comfort. I’ve already appreciated the abundance of soft surfaces almost everywhere I can touch or dig my elbows, and certain potholes in my neighborhood feel like mere road imperfections.

How well the wagon will wear its welcome is something I’m looking forward to discovering. We’ll evaluate our new one-year fleet car as a midsize SUV alternative, as a Subaru, and as a newly turbocharged model. Depending on how you define it, 2021 may be the year you don’t need two full hands to count the number of new wagons for sale in the U.S. The Outback’s otherness and value have been part of the model’s success from the beginning, and we can’t wait to find out if it still has that Subaru magic.

Continuing the subject of Buicks, here’s my 2nd favorite station wagon of all time (after the Olds Custom Cruiser), the 2019 Buick Regal TourX. This car is a little secret within the Buick lineup, being America’s only production station wagon today and the first one since the Dodge Magnum and the first GM wagon since Buick’s 1990s Roadmasters. The TourX, like the Regal, is actually based on the Opel Insignia, a German car produced by GM. Buick’s treatment of the Insignia goes slightly beyond adding the Buick badge though, as they added blacked-out plastic fenders, extra chrome fixtures and a slightly revised interior, which gives it an outdoorsy vibe. In the end it still is an Insignia, but even though it doesn’t feel all that Buicky, the TourX has humongous cargo space and a very well-made interior, hallmarks of the classic Buick Roadmaster. The TourX is also priced very well and sold well above expectation, at least when it came out in 2018. The TourX was made to compete with the Subaru Outback, Volvo V60 and Audi A4 wagons, but unfortunately in doing so it falls short on many aspects. Buick is dying and as such, its brand image is just not that pronounced today and is purely fed off of its Chinese sales, not to mention the power and luxury features in the TourX lags quite behind its competition. Also the Regal as a whole is sadly set to be discontinued by 2021, with the TourX going down with it. Nonetheless, the Regal TourX still holds the spot of my 2nd favorite station wagon for its obscure nature and the fact it is the last and only station wagon sold here by an American brand. As for the specs, the TourX is equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder that is turbocharged to make 250hp and it is equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. Combine these new cars with an improving charging infrastructure and you’d expect the tide of public opinion might start showing signs of softening towards EVs. That was certainly the case according to our own research, which revealed that the number of consumers who consider themselves as likely to own an EV in the next five years jumped to 26% in 2019, up from 15% in 2018. Back in the world of internal combustion, my honorable mention for 2019 must go to the latest generation of Porsche 911, the 992. Not only does it masterfully update the legendary 911 format for this hi-tech age with its fabulous interior and ultra-sleek exterior, but in terms of performance, the 992 moves even the basic, non-GT or Turbo models firmly into supercar territory. In fact, if I had to narrow down my automotive highlights of 2019 into just one, fleeting moment, it’d be the surreal three-point-something seconds it took our four-wheel drive, PDK-equipped 911 test car to fire from 0-62 mph.

Fans of the Audi S4 Avant rejoiced when the German automaker revealed it was bringing its RS 6 Avant to North America. We had a chance to take a closer look at the 2020 RS Q8 at the 2019 LA Auto Show, and it adds plenty of features aside from the engine, like 23-inch wheels and an RS-specific gloss-black grille.

And in the EV space, electric trucks took center stage: Bollinger brought us a production-ready version of its B2 electric truck, Tesla unveiled its unique Cybertruck, and Rivian gets closer to its production-ready model of the R1T. In our yearly Truck Sentiment Survey, we found that 70% of shoppers were willing to switch brands, which is good news for these startup truckmakers. However, their high prices may keep shoppers away.

With one colleague celebrating electric vehicles and another performance wagons and SUVs, I feel obliged to mention one 2019 highlight they didn’t: Ford’s live-streamed debut of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E just before the LA Auto Show. Ford’s decision to put the name and badge of its mighty Mustang on an electric crossover generated controversy, of course, but a pony-equipped vehicle with up to 300 miles of range, usable seating for 5, almost 60 cubic feet of cargo room, and a 0-to-60 time of less than 4 seconds sounds great to me.

But my 2019 highlights came from two automakers CarGurus has found compelling for years, Mazda and Subaru, in the form of strong new versions of proven models. The redesigned 2019 Mazda3 earned rave reviews from almost everyone who drove it, including George Kennedy, and the updated 2019 CX-5, which we sampled in the snow at the end of last year, also earned praise from a wide variety of reviewers.

A new version of our favorite Subaru model also arrived in 2019. We got a chance to drive the 2020 Subaru Outback back in September and enjoyed it quite a bit. The new edition of this wagon/crossover finally offers a turbocharged engine under its hood, which drivers living at high altitudes should particularly appreciate. Our recently published review of the 2020 Outback found it strong from functionality and cost-effectiveness standpoints, which we consider hallmarks of the Subaru brand.

This time of year, everyone’s talking about electrification and progress and the hot new thing. But as anyone with their eyes open can clearly see, 2019 was the year of the throwback.

First, Chevy resurrected the Blazer as a stylish, sharp, and sexy crossover complete with nearly $1,400 worth of 21-inch tires. Sure, the new 2019 Blazer had its detractors, namely those bemoaning its lack of off-road performance, but I, for one, welcome our new crossover overlords.

Finally, the highlight of the year for this writer was the long-awaited return of the Toyota Supra. Partnering with BMW gave the new coupe a brilliant Bavarian heart and soul (or engine and chassis, for our more literal readers) to pair with its stunning exterior styling. Sure, the 2020 GR Supra’s interior might feel a bit familiar, and the lack of a manual transmission will cut it off some enthusiasts’ shopping lists, but it’s safe to say that no other car on CarGurus’ 2019 test-drive review roster received as much attention at gas stations, grocery stores, race tracks, or anywhere else we drove it.

2020 Subaru Outback Engine Options: 2.5 or 2.4 XT—Which Engine Is Best?

If you’re considering a 2020 Subaru Outback, you’ve probably wondered if the 2.4 XT engine is any good. Now that the Outback’s engine upgrade model has seriously improved its fuel economy, the XT could become a viable candidate for an increasing number of buyers. If you’re comparing the 2.5 against the 2.4 (XT) engine or just want to know what the base Outback is like to drive, keep reading.

2020 Outback Fuel Economy: Class-Competitive Numbers

For a midsize wagon with SUV pretenses, the 2020 Outback’s fuel economy is pretty good. As you compare the Subaru to other SUVs, keep in mind that every Outback has standard AWD. If you stick with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder base engine, that 182-hp powerplant delivers 26/33 mpg city/highway, 1 mpg better than the last-gen model in both city and highway numbers and competitive in its loosely defined segment. If you match the Outback against the best compact SUV around—the Honda CR-V—it’s basically a tie. The 2020 CR-V 1.5T delivers 27/32 mpg in AWD form, or an even higher 28/34 mpg if you don’t mind sticking with FWD. Against the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, the Subaru scores a clear win. The Outback’s 26/33 mpg rates well against a Santa Fe 2.4 AWD’s 21/27 mpg (or 22/29 with FWD).

The real news with the 2020 Outback’s engine options is the new-to-Outback 2.4-liter turbo-four. Producing 260 hp, the engine helps the Outback earn 23/30 mpg, way better than the 3.6R six-cylinder of the last-gen model, which was only good for 20/27. Although there are reasons to like Subaru’s downsizing move, as you’ll see below, the way the engine interacts with the car’s standard CVT could still use some refining.

2020 Outback Driving Range: The Real Advantage

Fuel economy isn’t much different between the 2020 Outback 2.5 and the 2020 CR-V 1.5T, but driving range sure is. Thanks to the Outback’s gigantic 18.5-gallon gas tank, the Subaru trounces the competition. Go with the EPA’s driving breakdown of 55 percent city driving and 45 percent highway, and the 2020 Outback 2.5 will go 536 miles before needing a fill-up—that’s a more than 100-mile advantage over the 2020 CR-V. The 2020 Santa Fe is closer, with a 451-mile range with an AWD model, but that’s only with the more efficient 2.4-liter base engine.

The 2020 Outback’s move from the six-cylinder 3.6R model to the turbo-four XT model pays dividends not just with mpgs, but with additional miles between gas station visits. Again, using the 55 percent city/45 percent highway split from the EPA, the 2020 Outback XT will go 74 miles farther on a tank of gas than the 2019 Outback six-cylinder model (for a total of 481 miles).

Where the CR-V may soon beat both Outback engine options is a sub-segment the Toyota RAV4 already dominates: hybrids. There’s no Subaru Outback hybrid, but the Toyota RAV4 hybrid is good for 41/38 mpg and a driving range of nearly 600 miles. Expect similar numbers for the upcoming CR-V hybrid.

2020 Outback Acceleration: Improved, But Is It Enough?

Outback drivers don’t generally race from stoplight to stoplight, but even SUVs and wagons will eventually need to crest a hill with a full load of people, or pass a big truck on a two-lane road. And that’s where the 2020 Outback 2.5 falters. The CVT’s fake gear shifts with heavy acceleration can’t disguise a 0–60 mph time of 8.7 seconds. Remember that the CR-V matched the Outback’s mpgs? It does so with a 7.6-second performance to 60. As for the Outback 2.5, we called it “gutless” at 2020 SUV of the Year testing. Still, for day-to-day driving, the 2020 Outback 2.5 gets the job done. Drivers who can accept that passing other vehicles will take longer should be happy with the 2.5’s lower price and higher fuel economy.

Those who want to see what the 260-hp XT engine has to offer will need to stick with the Onyx XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT trims. Although we found the Onyx fun to slide around off-road, the 2.4 powertrain proved underwhelming on the road. To 60 mph, the engine impresses, with a 6.1-second time that easily improves on the 2018 Outback 3.6R’s 6.9 seconds. That’s not the full story, though. On the road, we called the engine “unrefined,” and the power delivery proved uneven. For a few MotorTrend editors, the engine-transmission interaction is rough enough that we’d select the 2.5-liter engine to avoid it.

2020 Outback Handling, Ride, and Transmission

No matter which of the two engine options you pick, the Outback won’t handle like a sports car. In the big wagon-SUV’s case, spirited driving will be met by a healthy dose of body roll. The Subaru’s chief advantage is its superb suspension tuning. Multiple staffers have complimented the comfortable way the Outback rolls down the road, even one with imperfections or railroad tracks. It’s a dynamic advantage you won’t find on some competitors at any price.

The CVT is another story. Although most of us found it responsive, the transmission’s fake upshifts and downshifts aren’t for everyone. As we’ve mentioned, the real disappointment comes with the 2.4 XT/CVT combination. We hope the 2021 Outback XT models sport a recalibrated transmission that’s better equipped to responsively handle that powerful turbo-four.

Which 2020 Outback Engine Option Is Best?

There’s no unanimous victor here, at least on the MotorTrend staff. Having said that, most of us would probably pick the base 2.5-liter engine. Outback 2.5 models are slow, but it’s not a deal-breaking disadvantage. So if you didn’t have your heart set on the 2.4 XT-only Onyx model, consider the 2.5-liter models to save a little cash, mpgs, and headache during those times when you need a quick response from a car’s engine and transmission.

2020 Subaru Outback unveiled: Australian launch late 2019 or early 2020

The all-new Subaru Outback promises to go more places packed with more technology – and will be available with turbocharged petrol power for the first time.

The sixth-generation model is bigger than before, has a taller ground clearance, better off-road ability, and advanced features to help it handle the daily grind.

It was unveiled overnight at the New York motor show ahead of an Australian showroom arrival in late 2019 or early 2020.

As with the Subaru Impreza, Subaru XV and Subaru Forester, the new Outback is based on the Japanese company’s new generation global architecture.

That means it will come with the latest crash avoidance and driver distraction technology, as well as being equipped with a large vertical tablet-style touchscreen in the centre of the dash, and available with a 360-degree “around view” camera.

In addition to a roomier cabin with more space for occupants both front and back, the cargo space has grown to almost two metres in length with the back seats stowed flat, to create more than 2100 litres of carrying capacity.

Comfort and convenience items include 10-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat, USB charge ports for front and back seats, and rear air vents.

In North America, the Subaru Outback will be offered with an updated version of the current 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (135kW/238Nm) or an optional turbocharged 2.4-litre petrol engine (194kW/375Nm).

Both are matched to continuously variable automatic transmissions and all-wheel-drive.

Price and equipment are yet to be confirmed for Australia but selected technical details have been revealed.

The new Subaru Outback has 220mm of ground clearance (up from 213mm on the current model), a larger footprint, better suspension travel and a more advanced “X-mode” for off-road use.

In the US the towing capacity of the turbo 2.4 is rated at 1500kg, the same as the tow rating for the current 2.5 model sold in Australia.

By comparison, the current model’s 3.6-litre six-cylinder can haul 1800kg, while the towing capacity of the existing 2.0-litre diesel is rated at 1700kg.

However, it is unlikely the six-cylinder or the diesel will be offered in the new model in Australia.

New efficiencies from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder has Subaru claiming more than 900km of highway driving range on a single tank in the US, however fuel consumption data has yet to be calculated for Australian models.

Subaru claims improvements to the suppression of noise, vibration and harshness – and “sound insulated glass” – will make the new Outback the quietest in the 25-year history of the nameplate.

Train to Adelaide...

We took the train into the city today (actually, we drove to the train stop and parked).  It takes about 30 minutes on the train to get there.  We went to the Subaru dealership to look at cars.  We are thinking of getting another Outback, but we wanted to take a look at other options also.  I have generally been opposed to buying a new car, since it’s been said that the “value decreases as soon as you drive it off the lot”.  However, we sold our last Outback after 2 years and there was only a $3,000 difference from what we paid.  That’s pretty good for 2 years of use!  Anyway, we’ll see what happens new vs. used when we see what’s available in Denver.

We went to the Adelaide Central Market afterwards and walked around, having coffee and grabbing some cheap bananas.  It was really crowded, and I attributed that to being 3:30pm on a Saturday.  Produce was drastically marked down, probably because the market isn’t open on Sundays or Mondays.  I bought my ground flaxseed at the bio store, which was a great price.  

We walked around Rundle Mall, had lunch, and popped into Kmart so I could buy a knife and cutting board to take on our trip to Kangaroo Island.  The goal is to prepare food in the hotel room instead of eating out, since there won’t be many options where we’ll be staying.  

We took the train back home.  We’re never sure if we should buy a day pass or use our Metro Card.  This is all very confusing.
