The Discovery SVX serves as an even more capable version of the Discovery, featuring lifted suspension, air shocks, knobby 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires, electronic locking differentials, a light bar and orange recovery hooks, among more. The automaker said the model shown in Frankfurt was just a “production preview,” of what to expect, but we don’t believe the actual vehicle consumers will be able to buy will be too much different. Range Rover models aren’t as suited to the SVX badge as Land Rovers, however, as they are luxury vehicles first and off-road vehicles second. McGovern also said that SVX won’t mean a vehicle is a stripped out off-roader. Instead, SVX-badged models will retain the comfort and refinement expected of Land Rover models with the added benefit of extreme off-road capability. “We have to stop thinking about function in a durable way,” McGovern told Autocar. “When you’re buying into the brand, you’re buying a premium product.” “It’s not cheap,” he added, referencing the Discovery SVX. “There are sophisticated surfaces, the premium durability. You think of stripping down to basics [for off-road vehicles] but I don’t think people want that any more.” McGovern said Jaguar vehicles could wear the SVX badge as well. Jaguar doesn’t talk about the capability of the F-Pace SUV, for example, as the brand is focused on-road performance, but the SVX badge could change that. “We don’t talk a lot about the [off-road] ability of [Jaguar] cars because they’re road-biased,” he explained. “But they could have that capability as we have the tech in the group. With a stronger 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six making 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque (35 hp and 30 lb-ft more than the outgoing model), the new X5 launches from 0 to 60 in just 5 seconds flat. It barely beats the new 2019 Porsche Cayenne we recently tested by a tenth of a second. Both reach the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at about 100 mph. Quite impressive, especially considering that the BMW tipped our scales at 4,854 pounds, which is 178 pounds heavier than the Porsche (which coincidentally churns out similar power from its single-turbo V-6 rated at 335 hp and 332 lb-ft).

And not only is the X5 quicker than the Audi Q7 3.0T and the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace S, but it ties SQ5 to 60 mph. The last two are lighter and more powerful. We’re eagerly waiting for the chance to test the new Mercedes-Benz GLE.

The X5’s “power feels quite linear,” road test editor Chris Walton noted. “Quick, fast, and very consistent.” He also praised the eight-speed for super quick shifts. That gearbox has been revised with new gearing, including a shorter first gear.

The BMW’s weight is likely the main culprit for its 60–0 mph stopping distance of 119 feet, which is a few feet more than both Audis and the Jag. The Porsche is the overachiever in this group, coming to a halt in an astounding 105 feet. We should point out that our test car is among a small group of early-build “xLine” trim units fitted with optional M Sport brakes that include lighter aluminum calipers (four pistons for the fronts, two pistons for the rears) and larger rotors (15.6 inches up front and 14.6 inches at the rear). BMW has since made those brakes exclusive to the M Sport package ($5,850), which includes adaptive dampers and a long list of creature comforts.

Despite not having the full stockpile of M Sport ammo, the X5 completed a respectable figure-eight lap in 25.8 seconds—eight tenths behind the lighter Cayenne with wider and stickier tires. “You’re constantly reminded that this thing is ‘taut’,” testing director Kim Reynolds noted. “Very easy to turn in and have the tail rotate too much.”

Fun stuff, but most customers will likely focus less on its tail-happy nature and more on its taut handling. Our tester was equipped with the optional air suspension ($1,000) that adjusts ride height based on speed, drive mode, and a switch on the center console. The overall ride is smooth and controlled, and we found that the suspension handled highways and L.A.’s potholes quite well. Road and wind noise is minimal, but acoustic glass is also available ($3,000) for those who desire an even quieter cabin.

After the X5 impressed the test crew, it worked its magic with our MPG team, as well. The EPA rates the 2019 X5 xDrive40i at 20/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined, but its EQUA Real MPG figures came in at 23.2/28.2/25.2 mpg. We have yet to MPG test the Cayenne or 2020 Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic, but the BMW’s EPA ratings are higher than both. A 2020 X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid is due soon for those looking to further decrease their carbon footprint, and there’s still no decision on a diesel powertrain for the U.S.

The 2019 X5 starts at $61,695 and can easily get pricey. Our X5’s as-tested price totaled $73,980 thanks to three packages and a handful of à la carte options. Our First Look and First Drive reviews thoroughly cover the X5’s long list of new technology (and its new off-road package), including the next-gen iDrive infotainment system that now features touchscreen capability and improved layout. BMW’s Gesture Control, which allows you to control some infotainment functions by moving your hand in front of the screen, seems better, but it still needs more tweaking; holding your phone close to the dashboard, for example, inadvertently activates the system. Wireless Apple CarPlay is fantastic, but it was a buggy, occasionally disconnecting from my phone and freezing apps like Spotify. Could it be an issue with my month-old iPhone XR? Maybe. But hopefully BMW and Apple can figure it out. Another gripe? The optional running boards. They hit the mark on looks but are a functional nuisance. Many passengers found themselves rubbing their legs or pants against the boards while exiting. We’d skip those.

These small gripes don’t overshadow the X5’s decent handling, sharp interior, and comfortable ride. That the Porsche, Audi, and Jag will struggle to catch its tailgate is a nice surprise.

Die Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition setzt sich selbstverständlich an die Spitze der Velar-Leistungstabelle. Dank des kompressoraufgeladenen 5-Liter Achtenders in V-Form beschleunigt der Neuling in knappen 4,5 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 km/h. Vmax liegt bei 274 km/h – und dies mit der Souveränität und dem verwöhnenden Komfort, der seit Jahrzehnten deckungsgleich mit dem Namen Range Rover ist.

Britischer Premium-SUV mit Sportwagen-Genen

Das gesamte Technik-Paket des Velar wurde an das größere Leistungsvermögen angepasst. So erhielt die Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition stärkere Bremsen und weiterentwickelte Aufhängungs-Komponenten. Neue Abstimmungen für zahlreiche Systeme von Antrieb bis Assistenz finden ebenfalls Platz. Auf diese Weise glänzt die SVAutobiography mit einem unverwechselbaren Profil. Sportwagen-Gene vereinen sich mit der enormen Leistungs-Bandbreite eines Premium-Mid-Size-SUV.

Das neue Velar-Topmodell zeichnet sich an der Karosserie und im Innern mit einer ganzen Reihe exklusiver Merkmale und Ausstattungsdetails aus. Land Rover Designer waren darauf bedacht, die perfekten Proportionen des Velar und seine charakteristische Silhouette im neuen Topmodell unangetastet zu lassen.

An der Karosserie kennzeichnet unter anderem ein neuer vorderer Stoßfänger den SVAutobiography. Größere Lufteinlässe versorgen den Kompressor-V8 mit ausreichend Sauerstoff. Hinzu kommen ein neuer Kühlergrill, neue Seitenleisten und ein neu gezeichneter Heckstoßfänger mit integrierten vierflutigen Abgasendrohren.

Die Modifikationen dienen nicht allein der Optik, sie verbessern auch die Aerodynamik des schnellsten Velar Vertreters. Auch die strömungsoptimierte Unterboden-Abdeckung am Kardantunnel trägt ihren Teil dazu bei.

Exklusive Lackierung in Satin Byron Blue

Selbst die „RANGE ROVER“ Schriftzüge an Motorhaube und Heckklappe wurden einer detaillierten Feinarbeit unterzogen. Die zweiteilig angelegten Buchstaben verfügen nun am Metallelement über gerändelte Oberflächen und unterstreichen so die Hochwertigkeit des Modells. Als einzige Velar-Version ist die SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition darüber hinaus mit einer Lackierung in Byron Blue seidenmatt lieferbar: eine Metallic-Farbe aus der Premium-Palette von Special Vehicle Operations. Sowohl dieser besonders exklusive Lack als auch die übrigen Farben sind serienmäßig mit einem in der Kontrastlackierung Narvik Black gehaltenen Dach kombiniert.

Ein sichtbarer Indiz für die Kraft dieses Range Rovers liefern die Räder des Modells. Die geschmiedeten 21-Zoll-Alufelgen wiegen nicht mehr als die 20-Zoll-Räder des regulären Velar. Auch 22 Zöller können optional montiert werden.

Hinter den großen Felgen prangen Bremsscheiben mit 395 Millimeter Durchmesser vorne und hinten. Die Komponenten sind jeweils zweiteilig ausgelegt. Das senkt das Gewicht und sorgt für eine effizientere Wärmeableitung.

Sitze mit perforiertem und gestepptem Windsor-Leder

Passend zum zielgerichteten Karosseriedesign zeigt dieses Velar ein Interieur mit dem Anspruch luxuriöser Sportlichkeit. Die Kombination aus Sitzbezügen, Dekoren und Oberflächen passen ausgezeichnet zum Charakter. Ein Highlight liefern die exklusiv diesem Modell vorbehaltenen Sitze: Sie sind mit perforiertem und gestepptem Windsor-Leder bezogen. Edle Zwillingsnähte runden das Bild ab. Serienmäßige Details wie 20-fache Verstellmöglichkeiten, Sitzheizung und -kühlung sowie Memory- und Massagefunktionen unterstreichen den hohen Anspruch nochmals.

Ebenfalls neu für die Velar Reihe ist das Lenkrad dieses Modells. Es besitzt einen speziell geformten Kranz und Schaltwippen in Aluminium. Edle Akzente setzt ferner das gerändelte Finish am Rotary Shift Getriebe-Drehregler und an den beiden Multifunktions-Drehreglern zur Bedienung des Infotainment-Systems. Es hört auf den Namen ‘Touch Pro Duo’.

63.900 Stunden Weiterentwicklung und Neuabstimmung

Die Velar Elektronik wurde darüber hinaus an vielen anderen Stellen an das Leistungsvermögen des neuen Topmodells angepasst. Allradantrieb und aktives Sperrdifferenzial hinten erfahren ebenso eine neue Abstimmung wie 8-Gang-Automatik, Lenkung und Luftfederung. Allesamt mit dem Ziel einer noch stärkeren Fahrereinbindung. Insgesamt arbeiten die Ingenieure bei Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations in 63.900 Stunden an der Weiterentwicklung und Neuabstimmung aller Velar-Systeme. Das Ergebnis: Handling, Fahrkomfort und Ansprechverhalten wurden optimiert.

Der Allradantrieb erhielt ein neues Verteilergetriebe – angepasst an die höheren Belastungen. Der 5-Liter V8 Kompressor-Motor zeichnet dafür hauptverantwortlich. Die Software-Steuerung des neuen Velar Topmodell passt präzise und unmerklich die Verteilung des Motordrehmoments an die jeweiligen Bedingungen an. Dabei können bis zu 100 Prozent Antriebskraft zu den Hinterrädern gelangen.

Die geschwindigkeitsabhängige, elektromechanische Servolenkung erfordert bei geringem Tempo nur wenig Lenkaufwand. Bei höheren Geschwindigkeiten gewährleistet sie ein festes und direktes Lenkgefühl.

Satter V8-Sound dank aktiver Abgasanlage

Die spezielle Abgasanlage, begleitet die üppige Kraftentfaltung des Modells mit markantem Sound. Die aktive Abgasanlage mit Klappensteuerung reagiert durch Öffnen von Ventilen auf die jeweiligen Fahrbedingungen. Sie verschafft dem Velar Top-Modell einen satten V8-Sound.

Ungeachtet seiner beeindruckenden dynamischen Eigenschaften ist dieses Range Rover Modell ein praktischer Vertreter der Gattung SUV. Er besitzt das gleiche Kofferraumvolumen wie seine Velar-Geschwister, die gleiche flexible 40:20:40-Teilung der Rücksitze – und einen großzügig bemessenen 82-Liter-Tank.

So I rented an F-Pace and now I understand why nobody is buying them.

Context:

I flew into LAS and rented a 2019 Jaguar F-Pace 2.5T AWD (ie - the base model). I spent roughly 4 days and 800 miles with it, mostly highway, some mountain passes in northern Arizona. The car had ~3500 miles on it when I picked it up. My point of reference (previous rental under similar conditions) is a (last gen) XC60.

Things I liked:

It is a great highway cruiser -- after a 5 hour stint I felt fresh as a cucumber and not at all beat up.

Lane keep assist -- easy to use, clear status indicator, gentle nudge back into the lane if you start drifting.

The infortainment wasn't bad, nice and clear to use but * (see later).

Even in base trim it didn't look like a base car - everything seemed well finished, no button blanks to be seen, and even had nice touches like a lit up door sill.

It looks really good. Much richer than what it actually costs (~$45k)

Things I didn't like:

Infotainment (con't) -- Android Auto kept crashing if I tried using non-Google apps (Waze instead of Google Maps, Audible or Pocket Casts instead of Google Music, etc). A quick Google suggests its rare but happens. All I know is the family 2017 Golf lets me use whatever the hell app I damn please and it doesn't crash. Also in AA mode the image doesn't fill the whole widescreen and you get thick black bars on the sides, waste of space -- but AA is janky so could be Google's limitation, not Jag's.

Cup holders -- there are 2, and they are small. I wasn't even trying to hold a Big Gulp. You know those Camelbak 750ml sport bottles with the nipple you suckle, yeah,- that didn't fit. Neither did a standard soda bottle from the gas station. I don't need 20 cup holders, but for a long distance family cruiser I'd expect a couple more, and have them be useful.

Turbo Lag -- Makes the Golf look like a spring chicken. Was sitting at a stop sign where the cross traffic didn't have a stop. There was a car coming but far enough away I figured I got this. Pedal to the floor -- nothing, nothing, nothing, lift off! You have to anticipate hard acceleration like 3 seconds in advance to make it work.

Lack of heated seats - I know it's the base model but it's also a "suv" with aspirations of going to the mountains (where it's cold) and doing things. If my $20k Golf has heated seats - why can't this $45k thing.

Overall - I am super glad I rented it and spent some time with it. It was a nice experience. But what I learned is that I am ever in a position to rent (or god forbid buy) one I will pass. Overall I found the Volvo much more livable. And I guess from my comments above about how my Golf this and that -- maybe the Tiguan (or Audi Q3/Q5?) may also be up my alley if the opportunity presents itself.
