It’s smaller than the Pilot family hauler but more capable than the CR-V soft-roader—perhaps perfectly targeted at active outdoorsy millennials like myself. Well played, Honda, I’ve taken the bait. For my Passport I’d choose entry-level Sport trim, because it’s approachable at $31,990, and it has everything I need. Like all trims, the Sport includes the Honda Sensing driver assist suite, which bundles adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. It gets a nine-speed automatic, compared to the Pilot’s six-speed and CR-V’s CVT (say CR-V CVT five times fast). Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is a $1,900 option I’d spring for. With snow, mud, and sand traction modes, plus decent approach and departure angles, it seems Honda baked real off-road readiness into the Passport. Using it to explore trails sounds fun.

The Passport seats five, boasting best-in-class interior volume of 115.9 cubic feet. It has 41.2 cubic feet of cargo area behind the second row, but I’d usually have the rear seats folded, which expands space to 77.9 bicycle-friendly cubes. Our long-term 2016 Civic Touring was a solid product from the start, showcasing lots of the engineering magic Honda is known for. But we also found some room for improvement, most of which has been addressed with the refreshed 2019 Honda Civic.

For starters, the audio system has finally replaced the controversial capacitive touch slider bar with a volume knob. Sitting above it are a column of new physical buttons that are more satisfying and responsive than the capacitive touch ones they replace. The touchscreen section of the Display Audio System is pretty much the same, though we wish it had been upgraded to the more intuitive and responsive next-gen interface found in other Honda models such as the Insight.

External styling tweaks are subtle and mostly found up front. The large chrome bar, for example, is now black, and the lower bumper has been reworked. Around back, the distinctive C-shaped taillights remain untouched.

Another welcome update is Honda’s effort to reduce cabin noise. The 2019 Civic has more sound deadening material in its floor, trunk, and front fenders, as well as new insulation in the rear fenders. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission depending on trim (Civic Si and Type R are manual only).

In our 2019 Civic Touring tester, the 1.5-liter turbo-four is paired to CVT and is tuned to make 174 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Power is more than adequate, and the engine and CVT behave well together. During testing, we made note of the Civic’s smooth power delivery. We recorded a 0–60 mph time of 6.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.2 seconds, matching the pace of our previous 2016 Civic long-termer. It put down a figure-eight lap time of 26.6 seconds, and the test crew found it an easy car to drive briskly.

The 1.5-liter is still among the most fuel-efficient powertrains in its class, returning an EPA rating of 30/38 mpg city/highway for the Civic Touring sedan (30/37 mpg for the Touring Coupe), increasing to 31/40 for Civic EX Coupe and 32/42 mpg city/highway for Civic EX and EX-L.

In another big change for 2019, Honda Sensing is now standard on every trim level. Previously standard on just Civic Touring, Honda Sensing’s list of driver assistance tech includes adaptive cruise control (with low-speed follow), automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, automatic high-beams, and a lane departure warning system.

The 2019 Honda Civic LX sedan, coupe, and hatchback start at $20,370, $21,570, and $22,370, respectively. Their long list of standard features includes the aforementioned Honda Sensing, electric parking brake, automatic climate control, and rear folding seats. The new Civic Sport sedan and coupe are new trim offerings for 2019, starting at $22,070 and $22,370, respectively. Meanwhile, a nicely equipped Civic EX—now only offered with the 1.5-liter turbo engine—can be had for $24,320, and our loaded Touring sedan rings in at $28,220.

With that said, the refreshed 2019 Civic’s strong value along with smart engineering and impressive efficiency serves as a reminder of why Honda’s compact sedan has been a standout in its segment for more than 40 years.

2019 Honda Insight EX Long-Term Arrival: Third Gen’s a Charm?

As odd as it might sound, the Honda Insight has always held a special place in my heart. Early in my career, I watched as the tadpole-shaped first-gen Insight morphed from slippery econodork coupe to the 9-second darling of the niche of a niche front-wheel-drive, all-motor import drag racing scene. (If you think I’m kidding, check out “Norris Prayoonto Insight” on YouTube.)

When the second-gen Insight arrived in 2009, I raised my hand for the launch in Arizona, hoping for an update on the fresh, forward-thinking first gen. You can see my initial thoughts (and long sideburns and dated DKNY sunglasses) in this cringey video done for the early days of our YouTube channel.

Unfortunately, Gen 2 turned out to be a lame attempt at aping the wildly popular Toyota Prius, from interior packaging to high-booty silhouette. Honda aimed this Insight squarely at America and missed. Despite being the lowest-priced hybrid in all the land, sales were lackluster, and the Insight was shelved after only five years in 2013.

Fast-forward six years, and the Insight is back—really and truly. Gone is the Prius-biting style; the third-gen Insight is genuinely good-looking, if easily mistaken for platform-mate Civic (no bad thing). The hard lines and Kammback profile have been replaced by a traditional three-box sedan profile with soft, sanded edges.

Impressed by its styling, interior packaging, standard tech features, and surprisingly sweet handling, I was one of the Insight’s strongest proponents during our 2019 Car of the Year program. Its Achilles’ heel (a loud and obnoxious mechanical drone from the one-speed transmission at wide-open throttle) fully torpedoed its chances of winning COTY, but one of the missions of our yearlong loan is to figure out how much of a deal breaker that actually is in the real world. My opening impressions: not much.

We’ve read and internalized the feedback we get from you, dear reader, and in an attempt to represent more of what people actually drive and to lower the average price of our MT Garage, I did not opt for the fully loaded Touring model, but instead ordered up the midgrade EX trim from Honda’s PR department.

I requested a standard EX in Cosmic Blue with the ivory-colored cloth interior and no additional options. The only accessories I added were the all-season rubber floormats ($195) and trunk tray ($115) because surfing is my jam.

The 2019 Insight EX has an MSRP of $24,060 and destination/handling charges of $895. Add in the mats, and our total ended up at $25,229. What did we get? Critically, a split-folding rear seat! This is the first feature I check for in every loaner car I drive; hybrids often put batteries in the back, making a fold-down seat—and surfboard portage—impossible.

I was also curious to live with two of the most impressive features in Honda’s suite of safety systems: adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow and lane keeping assist (which we also profiled in Brian Vance’s yearlong loan with the Honda CR-V). These Honda Sensing systems (along with Nissan’s ProPilot assist) are some of the most affordable ways to get a glimpse into the future of driver assistance (some say semi-autonomous driving) technologies. With the system engaged on the two-and-a-half-hour, stop-and-go drive back from COTY last year, I touched the brakes but a handful of times.

Other cool standard features: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, remote engine start (which likely won’t get used in sunny Southern California), and a smart key that locks the doors automatically when I walk away.

What standard features did I pass up by not going for the higher Touring grade (which starts at $29,085)? Not much I care for: heated, leather-trimmed front seats, a power moonroof, and the ability to use the Insight as a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot.

The 2019 Honda Civic’s safety kit is a definite step up from the previous model, with a segment-first lane-keeping assist on offer. Six airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control and Agile Handling Assist (which uses the brakes on individual wheels during cornering), hill-start assist, an electric parking brake with an auto-hold function, a reverse camera, a walk-away auto-lock feature and Isofix child-seat mounts on the rear seats. The model that is on its way to India has earned a five-star rating in ASEAN NCAP’s crash tests.

An interesting point to note is that the lane-watch camera and the digital instrument cluster are shared with the recently launched Honda CR-V.

Considering Honda is expected to price the Civic between the Rs 16-20 lakh mark (depending on whether the petrol-CVT or diesel-manual is selected), the new executive sedan will properly take the fight to the Hyundai Elantra (Rs 15.12-18.90 lakh), Skoda Octavia (Rs 15.99-25.99 lakh*) and Toyota Corolla Altis (Rs 16.45-19.36 lakh).
