I Just went and test drove the 2020 Explorer ST. Here's a quick review.

Having owned a 2017 Sport for almost 4 years now and with the 2020s hitting dealers, I thought I would go check them out in person to see if its worth the upgrade.

Exterior: From the rear ¾ all the way to the side view, this thing looks pretty aggressive. The optional ST wheels look great, but the painted red stock calipers are pretty gimmicky. Moving to the front ¾ view the previous gen post facelift (2016-2019) absolutely wins here. The 2020 isnt very aggressive looking even in the ST trim and just kinda looks like a fish.

interior: For how large the previous gen was, its always felt like the interior space was poorly utilized. The door panels are extremely fat, and the dash comes up really high and back down into the cabin. Sync 3 and the Sony sound system on the Sport is decent, but the B&O in the 2020 is worlds better. The floor in the rear is now flat, and the bucket seats tilt and slide forward instead of completely folding up to make getting in the back seats easier.

The ST seats are much more supportive, and an major upgrade with individually adjustable lower mid and upper lumbar, as well as a massage function which is also a bit gimmicky. The side bolsters are very supportive and hold you in the seat, unlike the previous where there was almost zero bolstering present. The ventilated seats work great and are welcome with the 100F days we have here in Texas.

Compared to the 2017, the steering wheel in the ST is fantastic. Its nice and fat and I found gripping it right where the paddle shifters are was extremely comfortable.

Ford has done away with the mechanical gauges in the ST and Platinum and gone to a single screen. There are several drive modes, and depending on the mode you select the display changes to accommodate. In normal mode, the screen only displays speed, but Sport changes to speed as well as tach. I thought I was going to hate the giant vertical tablet screen but its not actually terrible, and navigation shows a lot more of your route ahead than a landscape style screen. All of the climate controls are pretty intuitive and have mechanical buttons and dials.

The ST and platinum come standard with radar cruise, and start stop traffic as well as blind spot and lane control. I tested it out a bit and works pretty well even when coming to a full stop.

Performance: ST and Platinum come with the 3.0 ecoboost, and 10 speed standard. When comparing this to the 3.5 ecoboost and archaic 6 speed in the previous gen this thing is fast as shit for a large SUV. I cant wait to see what Livernois will do with this thing.

The one major complaint I have with the FWD based 2017 is the massive amount of torque steer you get at anything past half throttle. I always had felt like I had to compensate to keep it from pulling right. With the RWD based AWD its extremely stable and straight and the acceleration is a completely different feeling, its just constant and uninterrupted with the 10 speed. Overall turn in is way better and just feels overall more capable than previous gen.

Price: at around $57k MSRP its certainly not cheap. Given previous pricing trends, these should be going for well under MSRP once dealers get flooded with them. if you don’t care about the extra power or features, I feel the Limited trim will be a really good buy if you need a SUV with a 3rd row.

TL;DR: This is a massive upgrade from the previous Taurus based generation in every single way

Plus de 2500 km en Dodge Charger

On assiste peut-être à la disparition éventuelle de la berline traditionnelle en Amérique du Nord (un phénomène qui, j’en suis s��r, se produira aussi sur d’autres continents) mais il restera toujours quelques constructeurs qui en offriront sur le marché. Dans le milieu, c’est juste si l’on ne vante pas l’effort des constructeurs d’origine japonaise qui continuent de présenter de nouvelles berlines intermédiaires mais, selon mes observations, leur popularité sera de courte durée. C’est d’ailleurs ce qui arrive avec Toyota dont la pourtant si populaire Camry se fait désormais damer le pion par son petit VUS RAV4 !

Du côté des constructeurs américains, ce sera bientôt la fin des Fusion de Ford suite au départ de ses Focus et de ses Taurus. Même son de cloche chez General Motors qui fera éventuellement disparaître plusieurs de ses berlines dont la Chevrolet Cruise, l’Impala, la Buick LaCrosse et j’en passe. Chez FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), on avait déjà amorcé l’opération avant tout le monde en éliminant la toute récente gamme de Dodge Dart et l’encore plus récente Chrysler 200 (une voiture que, personnellement, je trouvais belle). Heureusement, FCA conserve, du moins pour un avenir rapproché, la belle Dodge Charger à quatre portes!

Je dis bien «belle» car je considère que la Charger est une des plus élégantes berlines sur le marché. Ses lignes sont agressives, voire même viriles (pardonnez-moi pour cette qualification mais…). De plus, on l’associe souvent à la force constabulaire car c’est un modèle qui répond bien aux exigences du métier. Mais, comme d’habitude, je vous laisse juger de vous-mêmes avec les photos incluses dans ce blogue. Car, pour aller couvrir le Salon de l’auto de New York (voir le blogue précédent), j’ai utilisé une telle Dodge Charger, un modèle SXT Plus AWD (à traction intégrale). Puis, quelques jours après mon retour à Laval, j’ai été chez mon fils dans la région d’Amos (six heures de route, comme pour aller à New York) avec la même Dodge. Je sais, je sais, ce n’est pas la première fois que je traite des Charger. Cependant, il a très souvent été question d’une voiture de très haute performance et non d’une berline «raisonnable» vraiment créée pour couvrir de longues distances. Et c’est comme cela que je veux traiter cette Charger, une voiture abordable créée pour les longues (ou très longues) distances.

La Charger 2019 nous revient donc sans grand changement sauf pour une révision discrète de l’avant du véhicule. Ma voiture d’essai avait aussi la finition Blacktop Package qui inclue des ornementations en noir mat, des jantes de même couleur et un déflecteur arrière. Pour le reste, il est difficile de différencier la Charger V6 du modèle V8 Hemi sauf que la version Hemi n’est plus disponible avec la traction intégrale (excepté pour la version Pursuit de police). Selon certaines photos dites espion, il semblerait que Dodge soit à préparer une version Demon ou Redeye de la Charger SRT avec un V8 Hemi de 797 chevaux et des ailes élargies. Mais là, je m’éloigne de mon sujet principal…

La SXT Plus qui me fut confiée avait donc le fameux V6 Pentastar de 300 chevaux et 264 li-pi de couple combiné à la boîte automatique TorqueFlite à huit rapports et à la traction intégrale (qui désengage la pont avant automatiquement quand il n’est pas sollicité). Déjà, au départ, puis-je vous dire que la boîte auto à huit rapports fait toute une différence si on la compare à l’ancienne boîte à cinq rapports, surtout au niveau de la consommation. Ajoutez à cela le contrôle électronique de la stabilité, l’antipatinage à toutes les vitesses le freinage à quatre disques et même l’aide à la conduite qui ramène la voiture à l’intérieur des voies marquées de lignes blanches si le conducteur ne les a pas repérées. Cette Dodge de la flotte de presse était aussi équipée de pneus d’hiver Dunlop Wintermaxx SJ8 qui, heureusement, n’ont pas été nécessaires quoiqu’il fût rassurant de savoir qu’ils étaient là lorsque la pluie froide s’est mise à tomber.

L’intérieur de cette grande berline américaine est vraiment conçu pour donner plus d’espace à ses passagers. Les sièges sont larges et confortables, faits pour de longs trajets. Les places arrière sont aussi accueillantes si vous devez voyager avec des compagnons. Puis, il y a un bon dégagement pour la tête quoique les portières d’arrière soient un peu basses. Le dossier de ces places arrière peut se replier pour agrandir l’espace du coffre qui, en passant, est déjà suffisamment vaste.

Le tableau de bord est d’un dessin plutôt classique avec une instrumentation facile à lire. J’ai apprécié le fait de pouvoir passer des km/h aux m/h en traversant la frontière américaine. Le grand écran de 8,4 pouces (avec le tant apprécié système Uconnect de FCA) s’est aussi avéré utile avec le système de navigation (incluant le système Traffic Link nous avertissant de bouchons de circulation). Cet écran a aussi servi pour la radio et diverses fonctions du véhicule dont le chauffage et la climatisation. Incidemment, la large console centrale retient également le levier de changement de vitesses traditionnel avec les commandes + et – afin de changer manuellement les vitesses (ce qui est aussi possible avec les palettes derrière le volant).

La seule note négative concernant cet intérieur pourrait être le choix des matériaux. Ils ne sont pas tous agréables au toucher. Mais au moins, la finition était agréable à l’œil, elle.

Sur la route

Évidemment, ce qui est intéressant, c’est de conduire cette auto sur une longue distance, ce pour quoi elle semble avoir été créée. Si vous vous demandez si le V6 Pentastar est rapide, dites-vous que pour atteindre le cap des 100 km/h en quelque sept secondes, ce n’est peut-être pas le V8 Hemi mais c’est plus que satisfaisant. Rappelez-vous qu’il s’agit ici d’un véhicule de plus de 4000 livres!

En vitesse de croisière, la Charger est un charme à conduire. Elle est spécialement à l’aise sur les autoroutes. Derrière le volant, on sent que la voiture est grande et lourde mais qu’elle se maîtrise facilement. La visibilité y est bonne et les sièges demeurent confortables pendant de longs déplacements. Et l’auto est silencieuse sur la route (sauf quand on sollicite le moteur à fond...il émet quand même un son que j’ai aimé, un son ressemblant à celui d'un V8 poussé au max). Le V6 procure des reprises intéressantes (surtout grâce à la boîte à huit rapports). La Charger a aussi une tenue de route respectable sur des routes sinueuses mais il faut se souvenir qu’il s’agit ici d’une berline de confort et non une auto de performance (la situation est différente avec les V8 haut de gamme avec suspension raffermie).

Ce qui devrait intéresser plusieurs lecteurs, c’est de savoir si cette auto est aussi gloutonne qu’on aimerait bien la qualifier, comme on le fait trop souvent pour les «vilaines Américaines». Sur plus de 2700 kilomètres de route (dont 80 % s’est fait sur autoroute), cette Dodge a atteint une consommation moyenne de 9,1 l/100 km (l’ordinateur de bord marquait une moyenne de 8,4 l./100 km). Sur l’autoroute seulement, ce même compteur a descendu jusqu’à 7,4 l./100 km! Et la température n’a pas toujours été clémente. J’ai tenu une vitesse d’environ 115 km/h sur les autoroutes américaines (avec le régulateur de vitesse) et de 100 en allant vers Amos…parce que nos routes sont incroyablement endommagées exigeant que l’on ralentisse très souvent (j’ai aussi du ralentir à l’approche des petits villages à cause de leur limite de 50 km/h…et de la présence constante des agents de la circulation). Faut dire que chez nos amis du Sud, les policiers étaient également omniprésents! Conclusion? Malgré ses dimensions imposantes et ses 300 chevaux, cette Dodge ne consomme pas plus qu’une plus petite auto ou qu’un petit VUS à moteur à quatre cylindres! Je dirais aussi que la boîte à huit rapports y a joué un grand rôle!

Une berline Dodge SXT Plus AWD affiche un prix de base de 42 245 $ La couleur bleu nacrée a ajouté 100 $ à la facture, le groupe d’intérieur plus luxueux avec des accessoires utiles comme les sièges et le volant chauffant en a ajouté 2495 $. Les multiples carpettes intérieures et de coffre lui ont aussi ajouté 595 $ et le groupe de technologie (assistance avancée des freins, avertisseur de déviation des voies, le régulateur adaptatif et j’en passe), 1895 $ alors que l’ensemble de décoration Blacktop, lui ajoutait 595 $ à cette facture. Pour le groupe dit Convenience (phares HID et ouverture de porte de garage), il faut additionner 775 $ alors que le système de navigation (très efficace, soit dit en passant), c’est un autre 770 $. Le filet du cargo dans le coffre a exigé un déboursé de 50 $ et la peinture noire du toit, 1395 $ Ah oui, la fameuse taxe d’accise fédérale pour la climatisation vient ajouter un autre 100 $ à cette facture et finalement, le transport et la préparation coutent 1895 $ de plus…le tout se chiffrant à 52 910 $ (plus taxes) !

Beaucoup d’argent? Peut-être! Mais si l’on se raisonne du côté des options et si l’on sait parler à un vendeur compétent, il y a de fortes chances que ce prix soit nettement moindre…pour une berline que je considère…nettement «plus»!

O Ford Taurus chinês ganhou a primeira atualizaç��o visual desde o lançamento. O sedã, diferente do americano, dará continuidade ao nome consagrado nos EUA desde o fim dos anos 80. Com nova plataforma, uma extensão da base do Fusion, o modelo tem 5,018 m de comprimento, 1,884 m de largura, 1,506 m de altura e 2,949 m de entre eixos.

O Taurus 2019 adota um visual mais sofisticado nessa atualização, recebendo faróis full LED redesenhados e com lentes de aspecto fluido. O destaque fica para os repetidores de direção em feixe de LED. A grade ficou menor e mais ovalizada, unindo-se ao conjunto ótico por um friso cromado.

O para-choque elimina as molduras laterais e adota uma grade contínua, mantendo os faróis de neblina em LED e as luzes de função curva. Além de novas rodas de liga leve, o Ford Taurus 2019 adota um conjunto ótico traseiro refeito, com lanternas em LED mais estreitas e retilíneas.

As alterações acrescentaram 22 mm do comprimento do Ford Taurus feito pela Changan-Ford. O interior não foi mostrado, mas pelo que se pode ver pelo teto solar panorâmico, o volante multifuncional continua o mesmo.

O câmbio é automático de seis marchas e a tração somente nas rodas dianteiras, mas com opção AWD.

Nos EUA, o velho Taurus deixou de ser produzido recentemente, encerrando uma longa carreira e deixando a Ford apenas com o Fusion no topo, mas apenas provisoriamente, pois o mesmo sairá de linha nos próximos dois anos.

The biggest brakes that fit within those 18-inch wheels are 13.8 inches in diameter in front, 13.0 in back, but high-performance pads are borrowed from the autobahn package that European export models get. That R/T and SRT grille and fascia are specified on this otherwise SXT Durango because of the added brake and engine cooling they provide. Other parts-bin chassis fortifications include R/T spring and shock damping rates, with Nivomat self-leveling rear shocks. The 6,200-7,200-pound tow rating and 6,500-7,100-pound gross-vehicle-weight rating (V-6 and V-8) carry over from civilian models, and trailer-brake controls are standard.

Hi all,

Just came back from the New England Auto Show in Boston and, given it's a small and limited show with lots of models close to each other, it's easy to do cross comparisons of brands and individual cars. I've long enjoyed coming home from such shows and posting some of my impressions. Here are my random, opinionated views from the frigid Seaport District of Boston:

Acura:

Everything save for the RDX and NSX feels a full two generations behind the auto mainstream. Acura continues to have mind-boggling mindshare to me, and their stand was pretty crowded.

They had a few ILX's out there front and center, which I thought was unfortunate as it's a deeply unimpressive vehicle from every standpoint. Again, feels like a terrific 2006 model...

Alfa:

I heard many people sitting in these models, loving them, but being concerned about their quality... Ouch...

Sitting down later in an A4, it feels pretty obvious to me that its dash and ergonomics were the target for the Alfa Romero Giulia. I went back and forth and so many of the spacial relationships and detail are very similar.

The Stelvio's dash, while very much that the Giulia, is larger by nature of the vehicle, and has a lot more super-plain swaths of uninspiring plastic. One person sitting in it called the dash "minimalist." I think that's being generous for the price...

Aston Martin:

The local dealer brought a shocking number, and they're amazing as always. If I had the money for any car in the world right now, it would be the new Vantage, which happily looks even better in the metal than photos.

Audi:

I talked to many people at the show randomly who said they were there to see Audis more than everything else. They're really the aspirational vehicle right now in the Boston area, I'd say...

The dash of the A7 absolutely feels like sitting down in a shuttlepod arrived from the future. Wow, what an interior. I'm sure in 10-15 years it'll feel as dated as a Buick Reatta's does now, but in 2019, it's outstanding. The anti-Tesla dash, as all of it's multitude of screens are beautifully integrated None of the other Audi interiors are nearly as impressive as the A7/8.

Why don't people talk more about the R8? It's really outstanding...

Chevy:

Can someone tell me why the Blazer is getting so much hate? It's quite attractive outside (but suffering from GM interior syndrome inside, see Buick below). Certainly, it's no worse than the Ford Edge at which it's obviously targeted.

Buick:

The Regal GS, a vehicle I've long liked, had its replacement there with about a $45,000 sticker. Sadly, the refresh doesn't keep up with the competition. It's interior is unimpressive, and the sleek design just somehow doesn't come together, being less than the sum of its detailing. There are a LOT of nicer vehicles inside and out (including the Giulia sitting 20 feel away for only $4500 more).

I'll use the Buick entry to discuss GM interiors in general. They were doing so well for a while. What's happened? Small gauges, bizarre and gravely dash plastics, odd and blobby shapes to dash components and door trim, the cheapest pieces seemingly reserved for things you touch. And so.... many... intersecting... lines... GMC, Buick, Chevy, it's the same across their lineup. They need to fix interiors and fast.

Kia:

Let's talk about the Stinger. WOW. The surprise of the show for me. Very interestingly, they had a Stinger and the G70 sitting about 30 feet away from each other and, to my shock, I vastly preferred the Stinger. I find its interior far more focused, honest, and less busy. It actually looks more bespoke inside and out. And I love the hatch. This could be my next car, we'll see. Good thing it's so impressive, as the AWD GT2 on the floor was priced in G70 territory ($54,000).

No K900 on the stand, which I wanted to see :(

The brand has some legs, as their stand was mobbed.

Ford:

Not being a truck, SUV, or Mustang guy, I couldn't get up any enthusiasm to visit their stand, and after owning 2 Fords in my life (Taurus SHO and SVT Contour), the brand and I are probably done...

Genesis:

I so badly want to love the G70, but this is the third time I've gotten a close look at it and I just can't get all the way there. The exterior still whispers "G35" to me (all the more so with a Q50 sitting 15 feet away). The interior, despite looking awesome in photos, feels busy, overdesigned, and dated to me. Squint, and I could think it's an economy car, the center console being particular aimless and underdesigned in particular. I hate the three HUGE HVAC dials, and its stuck-on dash screen feels more in-your-face than most. Sigh. I really wanted to fall in love...

I liked the G80 Sport quite a bit, but it's interior sadly just doesn't justify the price and whispers "cheap." Used might be a different story, though...

That said, the G90 interior is spectacular and my kids would kill for those back seats.

Infiniti:

See Acura: Everything here feels old, especially the dual screen dashes (which, a few years ago, felt fresh and design forward, which is the danger of tech focused design.... Beware, Audi...). The Q50 and its bigger brother, is it Q80? I don't remember or care. They all feel so sad and, with their Pontiac-like sport body cladding, so wanna be. And adding insult to injury, their local flagship dealer, located right next to Porsche in a particular franchise of dealers in THE CITY proper, just decamped waaaay out to a distant exurb. It feels fitting. Buh-bye....

Lexus:

I couldn't stick around here long, I'm just sooo unimpressed by the brand. That said, the LS interior and seats are excellent and the ES interior (despite an impressive exterior refresh) is very disappointing. It really feels (and even smells!) like a Toyota.

Speaking of interiors, BTW, with the Toyota stand literally across the aisle, it's impossible to ignore that these companies obviously share studios. If you want to make your 100K LS feel like a fraud, just go sit in a new Corolla, an Avalon, an ES, and then your LS. Now, everything cranks up in quality as expected, but these kids obviously have the same parents in their swooping interior shapes, their organization of controls, and even in switchgear look and feel.

Lincoln:

Ok, the Aviator was the second surprise of the show for me. It's a knock-out. Oh, that exterior. People at the show would just stop in their tracks and stare. You couldn't enter, but you could look inside at the interior, and it's very impressive. It's the Navigator theme - updated. This SUV is America's Land Rover, and if Lincoln prices this right, it deserves to be a massive hit. I hate SUVs, and even I'd think about buying this vehicle. The new Caddy XT6 is in so much trouble...

I have no love for something Navigator sized, but boy that interior is tremendous...

Standing back and looking at the Lincoln stand, they've accomplished something here. Everything looks the part of upscale product, the style across the lineup is coordinated, the grille finally works on newer models, the Black Label interiors really feel special. Lincoln may have found their niche?

Mazda:

In their palpable move upscale, they're feeling a little dull. The 6 is a snoozer.

The new (attractive) 3 was there, looking like an escapee from a Euro Alfa Romeo design studio, but you couldn't go in it. As everyone else has observed, those c pillar blind spots on the hatch are ENORMOUS.

McLaren:

They had 6 of these or so lined up at the show in a tour-de-force display. I could have stared at these for hours. Rolling automotive art. The world's most lust-worthy brand right now?

Nissan:

I didn't care enough to check out their stand. Sorry...

Volvo:

So, this is the most confusing brand to me. I don't love their new universal interior style, but I give them huge credit for trying new and different things with materials and design. They had some of my favorite (S90 interior design is so warm, creamy, and comfortable) and least favorite (most S60 trims) design points of the show.

The S60 R-Design seats were hands down my most comfortable of the show. OMG, they're heaven sent. No other seats should ever be designed, these are perfect...

Does anyone else find the little Swedish flag sewed on the front seats a little insulting in a wholly owned Chinese car company? I mean, Swedish design heritage is one thing, but actually a physical little flag on the seats? Really??

Tech aging warning number 3, the Volvo digital gauges do not impress...

In the end, I'm seriously neutral on Volvo. I have a lot of respect for what they're doing, but somehow it's not connecting with me. I just don't love it.

I know I've missed some brands and models here, but this is what stool out. This was a show without BMW, MB, Caddy, Jagular, LR, among others, as auto shows continue to wane. I wish I could have a car with the Stinger's passion, the Volvo S60's seats, the Audi A7's dash, the Alfa Giulia's size, and the Genesis G70's manual. Short of that, nothing out there is wowing me right now, which is in part a function of how good everything is, and in part the parity that market leaders have reached and that everyone else is aspiring to match. I've always had models I've lusted over (look at what I own), but that's not the case right now...

Based on the show alone what three cars would I love to have in my driveway? The Aviator, the Stinger, and the G90 with me as a rear passenger.
