Tout récemment, il ne restait plus que le Toyota Tacoma et le Nissan Frontier dans ce créneau. Mais les dirigeants de GM se sont rendu compte que plusieurs acheteurs de VUS intermédiaires auraient plutôt voulu une camionnette de même dimension pour leur bricolage ou leurs déplacements sur longue distance surtout que la majorité de ces acheteurs intéressés n’avaient plus d’enfant à la maison. GM a donc ressuscité ses Chevrolet Colorado et GMC Canyon avec le succès qu’on leur connaît aujourd’hui. Et Toyota de continuer de vendre des Tacoma avec succès. Le créneau revenait à la vie. Heureusement, Ford n’avait pas tout-à-fait abandonné le Ranger. Il existait toujours dans plusieurs autres pays du monde (j’en ai même publié une photo dans ce blogue alors que j’en ai vu à profusion lors d’un voyage en Afrique il y a deux ans!). Sauf, qu’il aura fallu quelques années à Ford pour l’adapter au marché nord-américain incluant un moteur à essence et des renforcements un peu partout (et, surtout, un ajustement plus serré des joints de la carrosserie).

Toutefois, il s’agissait d’une version très luxueuse du Ranger, un Lariat avec cabine Crew Cab et la finition très poussée. Dès le départ, on voit que les designers de Ford ont repris sensiblement la même ligne que celle des Ranger d’outre-mer, une ligne quand même très plaisante à l’œil même si on l’apparente à celle des grands pick-up de la marque. Le Ranger est livrable en version XL à cabine SuperCab, XLT SuperCab et Crew Cab et Lariat SuperCab et Crew Cab, tous à quatre roues motrices sur commande (au Canada).
Parler de la mécanique du Ranger est d’une grande simplicité. Il n’y a qu’un seul groupe motopropulseur disponible dans tous les modèles de Ranger, soit le quatre cylindres EcoBoost turbocompressé de 2,3 litres extrapolé du moteur de la Mustang. Celui-ci développe 270 chevaux et 310 livres de couple! De plus, il ne pourra venir combiné qu’à une boîte automatique à 10 rapports comme celle que l’on retrouve sous les F-150 (et les Chevrolet Silverado et GMC Sierra).

L’intérieur du Ranger n’a rien de spectaculaire. Pourtant, il est aussi accueillant que possible. Le tableau de bord est d’un design simple mais très efficace quoique l’écran de GPS-radio-SYNC3 et caméra de recul est un peu petit. La console comprend le levier de vitesses «normal» (avec des commandes = et – sur le pommeau) et les sièges avant sont relativement confortables. Vu que ce Ranger avait une cabine Crew Cab à quatre portes, la caisse en était plus courte, soit de cinq pieds de long. Encore une fois, je ne comprends pas pourquoi les constructeurs continuent de créer des pick-up intermédiaires avec un plancher qui ne peut accepter un contreplaqué de 4 x 8 à plat entre les passages des roues (l’écart n’est que de 44 pouces). Les ingénieurs me répètent que c’est pour permettre un meilleur passage pour le débattement des roues alors que j’ai vu quelques bricoleurs qui ont découpé et soudé de nouveau de petites parois entre ces passages de roue pour en arriver à un peu plus de 48 pouces (ce qui leur facilitait la vie pour transporter tout ce qui est de 4 x 8) et cela fonctionnait! Même chargé à bloc avec une caisse surchargée, jamais les pneus ont touché le passage des roues ! Enfin! Peut-être que c’est une façon de protéger les ventes de gros pick-up avec des planchers adéquats? Mais je ne m’arrête pas là. La caisse est pratique et le panneau arrière se manipule avec beaucoup de facilité. Toutefois, il manque un peu d’aide pour grimper dans la caisse, de l’aide qui existe déjà sur les plus gros pick-up (comme des marches sur les coins des pare-chocs ou un escalier rétractable comme sur les F-150)…à ce prix là…

Au départ, il faut se souvenir que le Ranger est, avant tout, une camionnette. Malgré tout…Malgré tout, il n’a rien à voir avec les Ranger des années 2000.  En effet, le nouveau Ranger est plus doux, plus silencieux et nettement plus évolué que la version qu’il remplace. Oui, grimper à bord demande un peu d’acrobatie (heureusement qu’il y avait les marchepieds) mais une fois derrière le volant, ça prend une toute autre allure. Tout y est plus moderne sans tomber dans l’excès. On lance le moteur en pressant sur le bouton puis on passe en vitesse. Tout ce passe en douceur. Le moteur émet un peu de «son» mais ce n’est pas envahissant. En accélérant, le passage des rapports se fait tout en douceur. Toutefois, lorsqu’on écrase, le quatre cylindres prend vie et on entend clairement le vrombissement du 2,3 litres turbo! Je me doute que les ingénieurs de Ford ont créé des tubulures d’admission qui agrémentent ce son ou ils ont repris la technique qu’ils ont appliquée aux F-150 les plus coûteux, c’est-à-dire que le son vient des haut-parleurs et qu’on ne peut les contrôler. Qu’importe, la sensation est agréable! Le temps qu’il faut pour atteindre le cap des 100 km/h est d’environ sept secondes ou un peu plus. Les reprises sont aussi impressionnantes grâce aux multiples rapports de la boîte auto. Par ailleurs, malgré le fait que le Ranger fût équipé de pneus d’hiver Toyo Observe GSI 5 (un peu bruyants), le Ranger affiche un comportement routier rassurant. La direction est un peu tendre mais relativement précise. Parler du freinage ici est un peu difficile puisque le pavé était soit très froid, soit mouillé. Ah oui! Mentionnons que la capacité de remorquage maximale de cette camionnette est de 7500 livres selon le modèle choisi. Encore une fois selon le modèle choisi, la capacité maximale de charge est de 1860 livres.
Vu que c’est un véhicule à quatre roues motrices, j’ai pu en faire un court essai…dans les rues mal entretenues de mon patelin…et sur un terrain vacant praticable. Ce serait, d’ailleurs, le maximum que la presque totalité des acheteurs de Ranger feront avec leur véhicule. Pour ce faire, on n’a qu’à tourner la commande rotative à la console et y aller avec précaution. Il y a des aides électroniques aux situations extrêmes mais je doute fort qu’elles soient souvent sollicitées. Mais quand même…

Le prix final? 51 859 $...plus taxes…Toutefois, ces prix sont comparables à ceux de la concurrence (puis, vous savez bien que ce sera à vous de négocier avec le concessionnaire). Le Ranger ne manque pas de concurrence, que ce soit du Toyota Tacoma, du Nissan Frontier, des GM Chevrolet Colorado et GMC Canyon, voire même du Honda Ridgeline et certainement du Jeep Gladiator à venir.
Soit dit en passant, j’ai déjà vu des photos des versions déjà redessinées du Ranger (n’oubliez pas, il existe depuis déjà deux ans ailleurs dans le monde) et, il ressemblera encore plus au F-150. En Afrique, j’ai vu des versions Raptor du Ranger. Ford a beau dire qu’il n’y aura pas de Raptor en Amérique, je suis certain que le constructeur ne se laissera pas damer le pion par des véhicules comme le Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison ou encore le Gladiator Rubicon bien longtemps…
Le printemps est là…
Le printemps est arrivé! J’ai d’ailleurs déjà entendu ma première moto en pleine accélération sur une autoroute près de chez nous. On a le droit, le 15 mars est passé et on peut rouler avec des pneus d’été. Mais je ne vous conseille pas d’enlever vos pneus d’hiver avant encore un bon petit bout de temps. En fait, moi, je vais attendre jusqu’à la fin d’avril car Mère Nature peut encore avoir des sautes d’humeur. Elle nous l’a prouvé cet hiver et pour elle, je suis certain que ce n’est certes pas fini!
