2020 Toyota 4Runner Review
2020 toyota 4runner: 5 pros and 4 cons. Toyota has actually given its 4runner a number of updates for 2020, bringing this suv's rugged appearances and off-road capability into the new decade. Related: 2020 toyota 4runner review: in your home. Find out more. Need to purchase a car during the covid-19 coronavirus outbreak? read this prior to you do. 10 biggest newspaper article of the week: 2020 chevrolet corvette trounces telluride. 2020 toyota 4runner: everything you need to understand. 2020 toyota 4runner evaluation: at home where the sidewalk ends. 10 most significant chicago auto program stories: 2021 genesis gv80 quits little ground. Within toyota's lineup, the 4runner is positioned above the rav4 compact crossover and along with the highlander midsize crossover. Cargurus has evaluated the toyota 4runner numerous times in current years, recognizing it with the following overall scores: 8. 2 (2014 ), 7. 3 (2015 ), and 7. More about the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Conditions apply. Crawl control is designed for driving on challenging terrain at low speeds. It helps the driver by managing acceleration and braking, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. The toyota 4runner is designed to fulfill off-road driving requirements, but off-roading is naturally harmful. The original 4runner was a compact suv and bit more than a toyota pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, however the model has actually since gone through significant independent advancement into a cross between a compact and a mid-size suv. All 4runners have been integrated in japan at toyota's plant in tahara, aichi, or at the hino motors (a toyota subsidiary) plant in hamura. The 4runner was available in at number 5 in a 2019 research study by iseecars. Com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the us. The 4runner had 3. 9percent of vehicles over 200,000 miles (320,000 km), according to the research study. The trekker was among the first prototype walk through conversions done to toyota trucks in the early 1980s. They resembled the successive 4runner conversions done by toyota, which started production in 1984, however were designed and built by winnebago markets with the approval of toyota. The trekker was no longer viable when toyota started producing the 4runner in 1984, having in essence functioned as a marketing test vehicle for that car. Thus, the very first generation is almost mechanically similar to the toyota hilux. All very first generation 4runners had two doors and were indistinguishable from the pickups from the dashboard forward. Almost all changes were to the latter half of the body; in fact, since the rear springs were not updated to bear the additional weight from the rear seats and fiberglass top, these early models tended to experience a drooping rear suspension. Related 2020 Toyota 4Runner details All 2020 4runners receive toyota's safety sense p (tss p), an integrated suite of driver-assistance features including a pre-collision system with autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure caution, and automatic high-beams. A brand-new infotainment system increases in screen size from 6. 1 to 8. In our very first drive review of the 2020 toyota 4runner trd pro, we were impressed by its off-road capability, stating that "'although the 4runner is old, it showed to be plenty capable on the trail." we were also pleased with the enhancements made to the vehicle's driver's assistants and infotainment systems, and felt that those looking to purchase a 4runner should absolutely wait for the 2020 model, as these updates actually make a difference in the interior and safety. Read what other owners consider the 2020 Toyota 4Runner. Shoppers also think about. Toyota's old-school 4runner hasn't changed a lot for many years, but its competitors have. Vehicles such as the nissan pathfinder, when an authentic suv ready to take on gnarly terrain, have actually given that morphed into crossovers with less off-road capability. The 2020 toyota 4runner keeps its status as a tough, off-road prepared suv that uses a more civilized option to vehicles like the jeep wrangler, particularly when discovered in trd off-road or trd pro trims. It's likewise a fairly comfy daily driver that can seat up to 7 passengers throughout 3 rows, and it can tow approximately 5,000 pounds. Toyota 4Runner vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee The same can be stated, to varying degrees, of models like the ford explorer and chevrolet blazer. That leaves just 2 primary rivals: the jeep grand cherokee and jeep wrangler unlimited. Offered the shift in buyers' preferences, its shrinking segment, and its antiquated style, one would presume the 4runner's best days were in the past. Get the base 4runner in gray, beat the hell out of it and keep it for 20-plus years. That's what i suggest. Your other options are the jeep grand cherokee ($32,150), which is even more refined and outsells 4runner by a nation mile. Toyota 4Runner vs. Toyota Highlander 2020 toyota 4runner trd pro: 3 things that make it a pro in the city. 10 most significant news stories of the week: 2021 genesis gv80, gmc yukon do it. 2020 chicago auto show: everything you missed out on. 2021 toyota highlander xse and unique 4runner, tacoma tundra identify themselves. While more recent midsize trucks are much smoother on the road, the 4runner is stiff and bouncy, jouncing along the highway. If you prepare to use your brand-new suv for travelling, something like the brand-new toyota highlander or smaller rav4 are most likely a much better bet. Toyota 4Runner vs. Toyota Tacoma But, that's exactly for how long it's been considering that toyota introduced the latest version of its venerable midsize suv. The fifth-generation 4runner debuted for the 2010 model year, using rather tighter interior accommodations compared to its predecessor and sharing various bits and pieces with the tacoma pickup an fj cruiser suv. Our experts' favorite 4Runner safety features: Rear spoiler, mp3 player, privacy glass, keyless entry, child safety locks. Toyota limited with magnetic gray metallic outside and black interior features a v6 cylinder engine with 270 hp at 5600 rpm *. Choice packagesrunning boards. Serviced here, locally owned and traded here!experts conclude'the 4runner's v6 produces a healthy 270 horsepower, ideal when you need to pass slower traffic or tow heavy loads. What do individuals consider the 2020 Toyota 4Runner? The 2018 toyota 4runner is a body-on-frame sport energy, meaning it's truck-based instead of car-based as would be a crossover-suv. This indicates that the 4runner might not be for everyone, but it does fit a specific market and segment of needs. The 2018 4runner needs to be thought of as a pickup truck with more seating capable of bring a fair variety of people and pulling a fair amount of trailer and cargo. As such, the japanese maker didn't change much of anything on the 2013 toyota 4runner. Many people would neglect this midsize suv at first glance, however it does have some extremely rugged and useful features that might attract buyers searching for recognized dependability. What's an excellent price for a New 2020 Toyota 4Runner? Different package updates followed in 2018, and after that a black-accented nightshade special edition showed up for the 2019 model year. Cargurus tested the 2019 4runner, eventually recommending the sr5 premium 4wd model based on its available features and sub-$40,000 starting price. As the toyota 4runner entered the 2020 model year, it went through a host of considerable upgrades, the least of which was the introduction of a venture trim level accented by distinct wheels and a standard roofing system rack. I finally get the love for the toyota 4runner. I almost got it in the past, now that i have actually spent a week in one, i'm feeling a connection to the loud, unrefined, semi-slow, old suv. Beginning with the excellent, the 4runner's looks are simply traditional and identifiable. Should I lease or buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner? Such has been the appeal of the toyota 4runner, a rear-wheel-drive (rwd) or 4-wheel-drive (4wd) model that has actually filled that function since it was initially introduced in the mid-1980s. Now, as one of the couple of midsize suvs still on the marketplace, the up-to-7-passenger 4runner continues to bring in buyers who want to venture far off the beaten course, or a minimum of would like to know their vehicle can do so at a moment's notice. A new, sixth-generation 4runner is stated to be in development but, at the time of this writing, no details have actually been launched. 2003-2009 toyota 4runner: 4th generation. Aside from pickup trucks and some very popular cars, couple of vehicle nameplates have been around regularly for more than thirty years. Up to $500 refund on a new toyota 4runner. Not valid on unique lease/preferred choice deals, apr programs or vehicles otherwise omitted based on the terms and conditions. Must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver's license.

CHEVROLET BLAZER 2020: 10 THINGS TO KNOW
Tumblr media
When I received the keys to the Chevrolet Blazer 2020, I thought to myself that I was boarding a time machine. Not as dramatically as the characters in the TV series The Thistle and the Tartan, but remembering that the first Blazer was still born in 1969. Enough to multiply exponentially the 10 things you need to know…
1 Because of the Jeep
The Blazer name began to resonate when General Motors decided it was time to retaliate against the International Harvester Scout and the Ford Bronco, themselves born to make a beard at Jeep CJ. Automobile historians agree that the Scout 80 of 1960 was the first American SUV. Take a look at the pictures on the Internet and you’ll agree with me that this 4×4 looked both great and naive. As for the Bronco (1965 to 1996), it’s currently in the news because Ford has just announced its rebirth after a quarter-century hiatus. As for the Jeep CJ, its history is so rich that we’ll come back to it another time.
2 First a pickup truck
In the face of its three popular rivals at the time, GM engineers placed a (detachable) cabin on the K5 platform, one of the full-size pickup models belonging to the C/K family, to market the K5 Blazer (the Jimmy at GMC). Oddly enough, although the letter C identified a 2WD rear-wheel drive and K, a 4×4 drive, the K5 Blazer was available in 2WD until 1982.
3 Come on, a second one!
Sales of the K5 Blazer took off. In honour of its third generation, in 1983, GM decided that it wouldn’t be crazy to give it a little brother. Thus was born the S-10 Blazer, more compact than its predecessor because it was built from the S-10 mid-size pickup truck. For several years, good people were able to choose between a big and a small Blazer (first with two doors, eventually with four).
4 This way to the exit
In 1995, the K5 metamorphosed into the Chevrolet Tahoe (and Grand Blazer in South America), which meant that the S-10 Blazer became the Blazer at all, since there was no longer any risk of confusion in the consumer’s mind. Then the Blazer came off the scene in 2005, replaced by the TrailBlazer, the Equinox and the Captiva (the Envoy at GMC).
5 The resurrection
The years go by. GM wants to insert an SUV between the Equinox and the three-row Traverse. Instead of fishing for a name that refers to an albino gazelle or a tribe of pygmy animals capable of completing the 100 metres in seven seconds, the manufacturer is dusting off the Blazer name, following the example of Ford, which is doing the same with Bronco.
6 Pretty face
Since GMC already has its Acadia, Chevrolet takes its platform from it. But the bodywork will be much sportier. Michael Simcoe, the chief designer, is asking his team to move away from the ancestor by not shying away from drawing inspiration from the Camaro in order to charm a young clientele. GM unveils the modern Blazer in Atlanta in June 2018 and starts sales in December 2019.
7 Broken tradition
By using the C1 platform, the new Blazer for the first time in its history abandons ladder construction in favour of a monohull. Hence the criticism from die-hard fans: “We want a real SUV, not an effeminate crossover! »
8 Long version
A version for 7 people is manufactured and sold in China since 2020 because the Traverse is absent from the homeland of Confucius. His followers first became acquainted with the concept called FNR-CarryAll and presented it at the Guangzhou Motor Show in November 2018. However, the differences between the measurements of the five-seat Blazer and the three-row Blazer (which GM thought of calling the Blazer XL before changing its mind) are not phenomenal, as evidenced by the small wheelbase difference of just 4 mm. The only explanation is that the Chinese are small…
9 Controverse
There was talk of assembling the Blazer in Spring Hill, Tennessee, alongside the Acadia and the Cadillac XT5 and XT6. But as Ramos Arizpe’s plant in Mexico was to cease production of the Chevrolet Cruze, officially launched in March 2019, and the fate of the Sonic did not look any better, the Blazer found itself in the land of the sombreros. Neither Trump nor the United Auto Workers liked this decision. The union recommended that its members boycott the Blazer and the orange duvet raised the threat of tariffs. Nevertheless, GM chose Mexico.
10 Small discomfort
Better still, on 26 March 2019, the manufacturer hoisted a Blazer to the top of the giant screen at Comerica Park in Detroit, the Tigers’ baseball stadium. Four days later, GM replaced the Blazer with a Traverse because the local media and baseball fans didn’t really appreciate the fact that a vehicle made in Mexico City was enthroned in the heart of the US made car capital.

Why is 2019 Chevrolet Blazer An Icon of Power And Style?
Tumblr media
The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is an all-new vehicle, but the name is most likely well-known for a majority of automotive lovers. It's been around in several different forms before, dating back to the 1960s. In its most iconic style, it was a two-door SUV with a removable top.
Chevrolet made use of the Blazer name for a compact SUV based on the S-10 pickup truck. Now for 2019, the Blazer morphs into a crossover SUV that fills a gap in Chevy's lineup between the three-row Traverse and smaller Equinox.
As a style choice, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is undoubtedly appealing; its Camaro-like styling helps it stand out from the crowd. But given the wealth of great options for a five-passenger SUV, it will also be worth your time to shop around.
2019 Chevrolet Blazer Models;
The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is a five-seat SUV that's available in four trim levels:
*L, Blazer (also called the LT)
*RS
*Premier
Every vehicle mostly comes in different versions that are the same.
Interior
Slipping in and out of the Blazer is easy, but taller passengers in the back seat will feel the pinch of a sloping roofline that reduces the headroom. Certain buttons and controls are cryptically marked and awkwardly arranged. Blind-spot monitoring is standard; good thing, too, since you can't see much out the rear quarters.
The eight-way power-adjustable driver seat and manual tilt-and-telescoping steering column provide suitable amounts of adjustment. There's a good range between low and high seating positions.
Front passengers get plenty of room to relax and freely move arms and elbows. Rear passengers don't have it so good. There's plenty of legroom, but only enough room to seat two adults comfortably (three children would be fine. The sloping roofline also compromises headroom for 6-foot-plus passengers.
The Blazer features GM's latest Infotainment 3 software.
1.Its crisp-looking touchscreen
2.App functions
3.Cloud connectivity raises the bar for these kinds of systems. Apple and Android functionality are also included, but the native software is excellent in its own right. Passengers onboard will definitely appreciate the Wi-Fi hotspot.
Smartphone integration
Android Auto work and Apple CarPlay, as the drivers would expect is: quickly and responsively. But the native Infotainment 3 system is good enough to offer three legitimate options for controlling your device.
Audio & Navigation
The look and function of the navigation system are impressive. It's featured adequately enough to be a real alternative to Apple and Google apps. This native system is one of the few worth the money if you prefer not to task your phone with navigating. Bose audio system isn't quite Premium but it's decent.
The three-band EQ is subtle, but the sound is solidly midrange and can't get too loud before distorting.
Standard blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, lane change alert, and rear parking sensors. The rearview camera creates composite images of the Blazer with several different camera views top-down, curbside, etc. This tech is helpful when maneuvering and parking.

SUV Review: 2019 Cadillac XT5 2019 Cadillac XT5 Platinum AWDJil McIntosh OVERVIEW Luxury squeezed into a midsize package PROSGood performance, comfortable interior CONSSome very wonky controls VALUE FOR MONEYI’m not feeling the price for this top-line trim WHAT TO CHANGE?The engineer who designed the shifter HOW TO SPEC IT?The $51,295 Luxury trim It feels like its been a while although in reality, its probably only been a couple of hours since Ive gone full-tilt Crazy Old Woman Yelling At Kids To Get Off Her Lawn. But now, Ive got a rant inspired by the 2019 Cadillac XT5. Im old enough to remember when a Cadillac had pretty much the same simple controls as its lesser-priced GM brethren, but they were just better quality and felt nicer in your hand. So I dont understand why a pricier car now needs more complicated controls. This XT5 requires me to awkwardly push an electronic gearshift up and sideways to put it into Reverse (several times, I thought I was about to back up but was still in Neutral), or slide my finger across a piece of glass to turn up the volume, when this smooth-driving vehicle could be even more pleasurable if GM had paid less attention to the gizmos and more to a simpler, distraction-free layout. The automaker has certainly started with a solid base, though. The XT5 rides on a platform that, with a few tweaks to its external dimensions, also underpins the new-for-2019 Chevrolet Blazer, which turned out to be among my favourite recent rides. There are

Every Removable-Hardtop SUV of the Last 60 Years
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler and the soon-to-arrive 2021 Ford Bronco are the only SUVs with removable hard tops these days, but the market was once full of them. Some of these tops were more removable in theory, requiring lots of tools, patience, muscle power, and possibly new weather strips to remove and reinstall (and just imagine doing it in the pre-YouTube era), but their sales brochures promised sunshine and fresh air while romping up a dusty trail. Here’s a list of all the factory removable hardtop SUVs sold in the U.S. that we could think of. Please let us know if we missed your favorite.
1961–1980 International Scout
International Harvester’s answer to the Jeep CJ was the 100-inch-wheelbase Scout 80. The early ones featured fold-down windshields and a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive, and they were also available as a pickup or a wagon with either a soft top or rigid “Traveltop.” This hard top spanned from the windshield header back. In 1966, the Scout 800 Sportop model got a sloped rear window and continental tire kit. All Scout II hardtop models (1971–1980) featured a sportier slanted rear end treatment.
1965–1996 Ford Bronco
View this post on Instagram
Happy Birthday, Bronco! A lot has changed since you first escaped from the stables 54 years ago, but one thing hasn't changed: The world could always use a little more wild. #FordBronco #HappyBirthday #BroncoBirthday
A post shared by Ford Motor Company (@ford) on Aug 11, 2019 at 8:04am PDT
Ford’s answer to the Jeep and Scout arrived looking a lot like the Scout, with a fold-down windshield and a choice of pickup, wagon, or doorless roadster configurations, riding on a 92.0-inch wheelbase that split the difference between the CJ-5 (81.0 inches) and the Scout. All featured four-wheel drive. The full pickup and wagon tops must have been reasonably easy to remove because one sees early Broncos photographed topless much more often than the second-gen full-size Broncos. These 1978 and later models featured a fixed roof and B-pillars, with a removable section over the rear seat and cargo area, though from 1991 to ’96 the instructions for top removal were deleted from the manual and bolts were changed to a torx tamperproof design requiring special tools in hopes of discouraging top removal for safety reasons.
1966–1973 Jeepster Commando
As the more civilized Scout and Bronco gained popularity relative to the CJ, Jeep revived the Jeepster name on a 101.0-inch-wheelbase model that aped those newcomers by offering roadster, convertible, pickup, and wagon body styles—the latter two got one-piece metal removable hard tops. The windshield did not fold down, but four-wheel drive was standard (unlike the earlier 1948–1950 Willys-Overland Jeepster, which was rear-drive only).
1969–1991 Chevrolet Blazer/GMC Jimmy
Always based on shortened full-size pickup truck architecture, these early-gen Blazers started off with full windshield-back hard tops. They were cumbersome, but once off they provided full convertible sunshine and wind through 1974. Starting in 1975, only the section aft of the B-pillars came off, increasing commonality with the pickups while improving weather-sealing and reducing wind noise. The 1969 models all got four-wheel drive with a live-axle front suspension. A rear-drive option arrived for 1970 with an independent front suspension. No Blazer since the 1992 GMT400 generation has offered a removable top.
1974–1980 Dodge Ramcharger/Plymouth Trail Duster
Based on a new-for-72 Dodge Ram pickup minus 9 inches of wheelbase, the Ramcharger and Trail Duster also started out with full windshield-back hard tops, but only the early 1974 models got frameless door glass. The rest used the pickup truck doors. Billed as basic utility vehicles, the standard vehicle included no roof and only a driver’s seat. A dealer-installed fabric top or a metal hard top with flip-up rear window were options, as were front passenger and rear bench seats. Sadly, the second-gen model built from 1981 to 1993 (’96 in Mexico) went to a fixed roof. Fun fact: There was a third-gen Ramcharger built in Mexico based on the big-rig-nosed Ram pickup for 1999–2001, but its top didn’t come off, either.
1976–2006 Jeep CJ7/CJ8 Scrambler/(YJ/TJ) Wrangler
Somehow it took three model years between the demise of the C104 Commando for Jeep to offer a removable plastic hard top on the longer-wheelbase CJ7. The later CJ8 Scrambler pickup also featured a removable hard top, as did the YJ- and TJ-generation (square and round headlamp) Wranglers. All were one-piece affairs, typically attached with six bolts along the sides and two over-center clips at the windshield. And the tops and doors are largely interchangeable between generations, though some require minor alterations to door strikers, windshield header channels, and the like.
1984–1989 Toyota 4Runner
The first Japanese attempt to mimic the topless pickup truck-cum-SUV formula was Toyota’s Hilux-based (they were just called Pickup here) 4Runner SUV. As on the Big Three’s big two-door utes, the 4Runner used pickup doors and a fixed roof over the front seat, with a removable section behind. Toyota’s was fiberglass and initially only came in black or white, with color matching arriving later for some blue, red, and gold vehicles. Also like the yanks: Four-wheel-drive models started out with a live axle in front, switching to independent in 1986. This also freed up room for an optional V-6 engine in 1988. Fun fact: 1984–1986 models were mostly imported without a rear seat, qualifying them for Chicken Tax evasion.
1994–1995 Land Rover Defender 90
After selling 500 Defender 110s in the U.S. during 1993, Land Rover switched to the shorter 90 model for 1994–1995 fitted with a 3.9-liter V-8 and a manual transmission. Billed as an upscale alternative to the Wrangler, the early ones all came with soft tops and roll cages, though a very rare factory fiberglass removable hard top eventually became available, as did the full metal hardtop wagon variant.
1998–2006 Land Rover Freelander
The original “baby Land Rover” was mostly sold with four-door closed bodywork in the U.S., but Land Rover offered a two-door model that featured a removable section over the rear passenger heads and cargo area. Removal only required undoing two over-center latches at the front and two more at the rear. (Models with luggage bars required their removal via two torx head bolts on either side.)
2007–2020 Jeep (JK/JL) Wrangler/Unlimited
With the advent of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, both the JK and JL generation Wranglers offered two hard tops, each of which features two independently removable Freedom Top panels above the front seats, greatly simplifying the task of introducing wind to the top of your head. Tops and doors do not interchange between these generations, but top removal has grown considerably easier with this latest JL generation. New Wranglers come equipped with the tool needed and stowage for each of the bolts that secure the top, but it still takes two to wrangle the top off and into its storage location.
What About …
1973–1975 Volkswagen 181 (Thing): Wikipedia says a fiberglass hard top was available as an option, but having never seen one in the flesh, we suspect the ones we’re finding on Google are aftermarket jobs.
1986–1995 Suzuki Samurai: A soft-top version was offered, and several aftermarket companies sold removable hard tops, but at least in this country there does not seem to have been a factory offering.
1989–2005 Suzuki Sidekick/Vitara, Geo/Chevrolet Tracker: Here again, the aftermarket offered the option of a snug, cozy hard top, but the factory doesn’t appear to have offered a hard top.
1995–2000 Toyota RAV4: The two-door versions of the original RAV4 design could be had with a fixed roof or a folding soft top, and here again the aftermarket handled the removable hard top.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: Luxurious, Solid on Any Road Surface
2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit February 2020 Lime Kiln Road, Adirondacks
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is almost a decade old, and yet it’s currently the best-selling midsize SUV on the market: 242,969 sold last year, 200,000-plus most for much of the past two decades. The current body design has been around since 2011, there are 13 trim lines (model variants), multiple drivetrains, and varying levels of driver assistance technology.
Both despite its age and because of it – when the factory builds the same car year after year, reliability tends to improve – the Grand Cherokee has good fit and finish, a nicely controlled ride, a very nice interior on most trims, comfortable seats, and a solid infotainment system. Other than standard blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, driver-assist features are optional. The two rows of seats are both roomy, but no third-row seat is offered.
If one owner says their Grand Cherokee does fine off-road but the interior looks just okay and the center stack display is small, a second owner says it’s pretty luxe and the display is nice, and a third says the cockpit looks great and did you know it goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, that’s because, with those trim lines, there’s one that costs $33,000, a couple that run around $50,000-$60,000, and one that runs $88,000 with a 707-hp engine. (No, that’s not a typo.) You decide how much off-road capability, acceleration, and rear-seat entertainment you want, and you pay accordingly.
On the Road
I test drove the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. It is the premier Grand Cherokee for people who don’t feel the need to have a strong Dodge Viper flavor to their SUV, in which case there’s the performance-oriented Grand Cherokee V8 SRT and the high-performance Trackhawk. My test car totaled $62,775 with a four-wheel-drive system – not just all-wheel-drive – that added $3,000, a V8 engine that added $3,795, an eight-speed automatic, telematics, onboard Wi-Fi, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an AC socket and plenty of USB jacks, and a $1,995 rear entertainment system. At this point, you’re pushing into Audi-BMW-Mercedes territory.
My time in the Grand Cherokee Summit included a late-winter run into the New York State Adirondacks area around Lake Placid. A detour through hilly, rutted dirt roads covered with about eight inches of snow proved no problem at all.
The ride up and back into the northwoods, on interstate highways, was pleasurable, with a comfortable driving position, decent audio, and very little road noise. The Grand Cherokee Summit is plenty comfortable for four adults and a weekend’s worth of luggage. Even with cupholders front and back and bins in the doors, in-cabin storage for little items was lacking.
Good Navi, but Audio Could Be Better
The UConnect 4 infotainment system on my car was quite easy to use. But note that not all Grand Cherokees get UConnect 4 and 8-inch center stack screens. For years, Chrysler-Dodge-Ram products have had very good navigation and infotainment. It doesn’t hurt that when you press the NAV button, the screen asks you, “Where to?” The only people who don’t get that are grade-school teachers looking for a verb and a complete sentence.
This was the first Harman Kardon premium audio system I’ve driven that wasn’t breathtaking. It had 19 speakers and the issue – to me – was the woofer in the driver’s kick panel area. It was so heavily boosted that with the volume up and listening to my workout playlist (you know: the songs you’re too embarrassed to share), the sound pressure made my pant legs flap. So much so it felt like a Rockford Fosgate system, a brand happy to be known for heavy – sorry, deep – bass. It was much improved by turning the bass setting below the midpoint.
Not Enough Driver Assists
The advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are not all state-of-the-art and too many are extra-cost. Nothing wrong with blind-spot detection (standard) or lane keep assist (included on some trim lines). The optional ParkSense backup system auto-stops the car if you get too close to a stopped object. That’s all good. Adaptive cruise control goes down to zero but you have to manually resume forward travel, and if you’re stopped more than three seconds, ACC disengages.
Forward collision warning, a technology that requires a low-cost front-facing camera, is optional. Of the 18 midsize, two-row SUVs on the market, the only non-Jeep product lacking FCW is the revived Chevrolet Blazer, which, despite its heritage, is not a hard-core off-roader. Automatic emergency braking for highway and for city situations are also optional, and pedestrian AEB is not offered.
My Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4 was rated at 14 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 17 mpg overall. I averaged 20 mpg in a week of primarily highway driving.
So Many Models to Choose From
The 2020 Grand Cherokee comes in a dazzling array of trim lines, or model variants. Currently, there are 13. These prices include $1,495 shipping.
Laredo, $33,735 rear drive / $35,735 four-wheel drive Laredo E, $35,390 / $37,390 Upland, $37,685 / $39,685 Altitude, $39,830 / $41,830 North Edition, $40,285 4WD standard Limited, $41,545 / $43,545 Limited X, $46,640 / $48,640 Trailhawk $46,645 4WD standard Overland, $47,985 / $50,985 High Altitude, $50,730 / $53,730 Summit, $54,085 / $57,085 SRT, $70,085 4WD standard Trackhawk, $88,590 4WD standard
It’s hard to describe each model other than to note the Laredo E is a nicer Laredo, not a hybrid; North Edition and Trailhawk target wintry off-roading and off-roading; and SRT and Trackhawk are high-performance SUVs that also go off-road and tow boats.
Should You Buy?
The Grand Cherokee is the best of the seven Jeep models you can buy in terms of modern-day amenities and reliability without sacrificing heavy snow / off-road driving. It’s also the best-selling, with 26 percent of Jeep’s 923,2981 2019 sales. By our count, there are nearly 25 midsize, mainstream-price SUVs, and almost as many premium midsize SUVs. The top sellers, mainstream or premium, are:
SUV 2019 Sales Change Jeep Grand Cherokee 242,969 +8% Toyota Highlander 239,437 -2% Jeep Wrangler 228,042 -5% Ford Explorer 187,061 -28% Subaru Outback 181,178 +1%
(Note: The big falloff for the Ford Explorer came in the wake of quality-control problems while getting the sixth-generation Explorer and the sibling Lincoln Aviator into production at Ford’s Chicago assembly plant.)
The Jeep Cherokee is not an entry edition of the Grand Cherokee but a separate model eight inches shorter than Grand Cherokee’s 190 inches, with a base four-cylinder engine and not quite as refined.
The Grand Cherokee is your best choice among midsize SUVs if you want an one that goes off-road, not just negotiate a lightly plowed gravel road near the ski slope, and does it with a reasonable amount of passenger comfort. As a bonus, some Grand Cherokees can tow up to 7,200 pounds; the rest tow at least 3,500 pounds. If you have little kids (two), the dual rear entertainment system may be worth the healthy price. The V6 engines are good and the V8s are better but gas mileage suffers.
The mainstream trim lines fare well against the Chevrolet Blazer and Ford Edge. The roomier, longer, three-row Ford Explorer is also a competitor for those who value towing capacity. The Toyota 4Runner is very good off-road but not as smooth otherwise. If you want a competent all-around vehicle, look also at the Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Hyundai Santa Fe. The Dodge Durango is a cousin to the Grand Cherokee, is longer, and has three rows of seats, but isn’t as skilled off-roading.
The Grand Cherokee upper trim lines compete nicely against premium brands. But it’s hard to match the NVH and highway manners of say, a BMW X5, when you go into battle in a design released the same year Ke$ha debuted We R Who We R.
Other top midsize SUVs don’t map to Grand Cherokee’s off-roader ethic. The Lexus RX is all-around excellent but is not what you want going off-road or hauling a trailer. The Mazda CX-9 is the sportiest and most fun to drive, but without the cargo capacity.
Jeep’s other sales advantage is that Grand Cherokee buyers are predisposed toward USA vehicles. According to JD Power research, 76 percent of Grand Cherokee owners say they prefer buying from a domestic company versus 58 percent for the midsize SUV segment as a whole. That means Grand Cherokee owners may not cross-shop the sporty Korean-flagged Kia Telluride (three rows but still midsize), even it’s built in Alabama, and the similar Hyundai Palisade. The Grand Cherokee would win on off-road driving. But in other areas, Kia and Hyundai are extremely competitive, particularly NVH and driver assists.
A new Grand Cherokee should be introduced this year as a 2021 model. Given how well Jeep has done to keep the fourth-generation model competitive, the new model should be impressive.

SUV Review: 2019 Nissan Murano Platinum AWD OVERVIEW Fashionable alternative to the typical mid-sized family crossover PROSWell contented, comfortable, stylish CONSLimited towing capability, smallish cargo area, limited rear-view visibility VALUE FOR MONEYGood WHAT TO CHANGE?An optional engine choice would be nice HOW TO SPEC IT?Murano SL AWD ($42,948) The mid-sized crossover/SUV segment is full of well-known nameplates: Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Dodge Durango, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, to name a few. In all 15 or so models all fight for market share, and this field has grown in the past 12 months with additions such as the Volkswagen Atlas, Honda Passport, Subaru Ascent and Chevrolet Blazer (old name, new SUV). Oh, and let’s not forget the brand-new Hyundai/Kia twins as well — the Palisade and Telluride, respectively. Some of the aforementioned have three rows of seats; some have two. These are the workhorses of the entire SUV segment — the family vehicles, the haulers. They usually aren’t sexy; they’re not (with some exception) overpowered or overpriced. They just are. Which doesn’t mean they can’t be good looking or well equipped or, depending on your definition, borderline luxurious. As an example I offer Nissan’s Murano, specifically the topline Platinum edition being tested. The name has been familiar to Canadians since 2002; the third-generation model has been around since 2015, with the 2019 version receiving a mild exterior refresh — more pronounced V-motion' grille,

Is Toyota Readying an Off-Road-Inspired Small SUV Below RAV4?
When Toyota and Mazda first announced that they were building a joint manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama, both automakers made it clear what they were making. Mazda was going to build a North American-exclusive SUV and Toyota would add additional production capacity for the Corolla. Well, things have changed as Toyota has announced that it will make a “new, yet-to-be-announced SUV” there instead, and we have a strong feeling it’s going to be another small SUV to slot below RAV4.
Toyota’s announcement didn’t go into much detail as to what model will be added, but Automotive News reports it will be shown to dealers at a private event in Las Vegas this September. With SUV sales red hot right now, it’s no surprise that Toyota has decided to dedicate more production capacity to utility vehicles.
Earlier this year, we reported that Toyota has 12 new or redesigned vehicles coming in the next three years. Toyota general manager Jack Hollis said that freeing up the Mississippi plant and moving Corolla to Alabama would allow for new small vehicles to be built. Hollis also hinted that Toyota could add another small SUV with available all-wheel drive to slot below the RAV4, currently the brand’s top seller, alongside the front-drive-only C-HR. “They can be in the same segment, but at a different price point. Or one is on-road, while the other is off-road. It could be taller, wider, or more capable,” Hollis said during our interview with him at the 2019 New York auto show. “We get caught wanting to be in different segments, but what about multiple products in the same segment?”
Those past comments strongly suggest Toyota is looking to enter a white-space niche that it currently doesn’t have a presence in—and today’s announcement only adds fuel to the speculation fire. Since Toyota originally planned to produce the Corolla in Alabama, a potential new small SUV would most likely utilize the TNGA-C platform that underpins the Corolla, C-HR, Prius, and the Lexus UX. The new small SUV would occupy the narrow space between the C-HR and RAV4, making it a competitor to subcompact SUVs on the larger end of the class spectrum like the Subaru Crosstrek and Nissan Rogue Sport. Unlike the front-drive-only C-HR, this new SUV may be more rugged, feature a boxier look, and offer all-wheel drive to distinguish it from on-road-focused competitors.
Toyota first hinted at another small SUV at the 2017 New York auto show with the boxy FT-4X Concept. That rig was shorter than the C-HR but was wider and had more ground clearance for use on (light) dirt trails. Out of all the concepts Toyota has shown, that one has yet to see a production counterpart. When the FT-4X was first revealed, Toyota said it was gauging reaction from dealers and the public before giving it the green light. Assuming the vehicle got positive feedback, the process from concept to production was said to take 24-36 months. That doesn’t quite line up with the production timeline at Alabama, which is expected to start building cars in 2021, though it’s possible the project took longer than initially expected.
Another possible addition would be a model to slot between the RAV4 and Highlander. The two-row midsize segment has started to gain popularity and new players like the Honda Passport and Chevrolet Blazer have joined the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Toyota would be wise to enter that segment since it hasn’t really had anything in that niche since the Venza was discontinued after the 2015 model year. Should Toyota decide to reenter this class, it would need something less car-like in looks. Like all new Toyota models, a potential Passport fighter would be underpinned by one of the TNGA platforms, likely the GA-K used in the Camry and Avalon.

Road Tests: 2019 Honda Passport
Vital Statistics
Engine: 3.5 liter
Horsepower: 280
Torque: 262 lb-ft.
0-60 mph: 6.5 seconds
1/4 mile: 15.0 seconds @ 93 mph
EPA: 19 mpg city / 24 mpg highway
Energy Impact: 15.7 barrels of oil/yr
CO2 Emissions: 7.1 tons/yr
You may remember the Honda Passport, the Isuzu-based 5-passenger SUV that Honda sold in the 1990s. It was actually their first SUV, until their own CR-V arrived for ‘97. But when Honda’s Isuzu partnership went away, so did the Passport. Well, the Passport is back; and Honda didn’t need any help this time around.
Honda kept it within their own ranks for this 2019 Honda Passport. as it is basically a 2-row version of the Honda Pilot.
Why the Pilot’s capable chassis was not used for a smaller crossover before was always a bit of a mystery.
All of the hardware is pretty much the same, including the identical 111.0-inch wheelbase, although overall length is 6.2 inches shorter. No base 18-inch wheels though, all Passports ride on 20s.
Perhaps in an effort to market it more to the adventure types instead of soccer moms, lots of exterior black trim has been added; and ground clearance is more than an inch higher than the Pilot, when equipped with all-wheel-drive. And indeed most of Honda’s current advertising involves backwoods excursions.
Passport uses Honda’s i-VTM4 all-wheel drive system, with modes for mud, sand, and snow; plenty capable for what most Passport owners will get into.
The same 3.5-liter V6 from the Pilot, delivers 280-horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque. But only the 9-speed transmission is available, which means you’re stuck with buttons for a shifter. Similar to the Pilot, tow rating is 3,500-lbs. with front-wheel-drive, 5,000-lbs with AWD.
No 3rd row to store in the cargo area, which means you now have a large underfloor bin instead; it alone holds 2½-cubic.ft.
Cargo floor, rear seats up, capacity is 41.2 cubic-ft.; maxing out at 77.9 with them folded.
We’ve spent enough time in 3-row Pilots to know that while not the biggest inside; the comfortable interior holds up extremely well to above average abuse; and we expect the same with the 2-row Passport.
It’s a well-equipped interior too. The available 8-inch Display Audio system allows both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration; and gets the added benefit of a good-old volume knob.
All but base Sport trim has a moonroof, heated leather-trimmed seats, and a power liftgate. No 360-degree video monitors, but the standard backup camera does have three perspectives.
Here’s another plus, rear seaters have over an inch more legroom compared to the Pilot.
Honda Sensing safety is standard and includes Collision Mitigation Braking as well as Road Departure Mitigation.
But whether you’re keeping it between the lines yourself, or letting the Passport do it for you, the ride is smooth and steering quick.
It hustled through our cone course quite well. There is some body roll to deal with, but also quite a lot of grip from the 265/45 Continental CrossContact LX Sport tires. Like all of the other vehicles on Honda’s Global Light Truck platform, suspension is by way of MacPherson struts up front, and multilink independent rear.
It’s only slightly lighter than the Pilot, so we weren’t expecting a big difference in acceleration performance. But, Honda’s 9-speed has gotten some recent updates.
Indeed, we hit 60 in a fine 6.5-seconds. After a nice, spirited leap off the line, power continued to impress all the way down the track. Shifts are a little lazy, but also very smooth. Our best ¼-mile was a 15.0-second run, at 93 miles-per-hour.
The brake pedal is soft, but results of just 112-feet from 60 are very good; and the Passport was rock solid throughout.
Government Fuel Economy Ratings for all-wheel-drive are 19-City, 24-Highway, and 21-Combined. Our average, a great 24.1 miles-per-gallon on Regular. Passport rates a slightly below average Energy Impact Score of 15.7-barrels of yearly oil consumption with 7.1-tons of CO2 emissions.
Despite fewer seats, but with more standard features, Passport base price is higher than the Pilot by $500, starting at $33,035. All-wheel-drive is a $1,900 option on all trims except top level Elite, which has standard AWD for $44,725.
It only makes sense that a 2-row variant of the popular Pilot now exists. And while it makes a little less sense that it took this long, bringing back the Passport name, and changes to its stance, will make it appeal to a slightly more adventurous buyer. We think the 2019 Honda Passport will also do well against a crowded field that includes the Ford Edge, Chevrolet Blazer, Nissan Murano, Hyundai Santa Fe and others. Yes, we are impressed with the better-late-than-never Passport, and it easily gets our stamp of approval.
