2019’s Top Rides: Part 3/Buick Regal GS, Subaru Ascent and Golf R
By Michael Hozjan
Buick Regal GS AWD: Buick gets it right
Tumblr media
At 12, I wanted to be a car designer. Fate however had different plans for me. With an eye for automotive design, I grew up loving Buicks; from the ’57 Special to the ’59 Invicta, with the ’64 Wildcat stealing my heart time and again. Cadillacs took a close second, Fords were ok but I found Chevs too feminine. Buicks, were masculine with broad shouldered front fenders and creased lines, personifying the designing cues of GM greats, Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell.
Then came the Riviera. One snowy December afternoon as I headed to my post office, there on St. Lawrence Boulevard, with six inches of snow on the ground sat a ’65 Riviera. My heart skipped several beats and I must have studied its lines for what seemed like an eternity.
Well into the ‘70s there were some noteworthy designs that came out of Buick’s design studios however, the last four decades have been anything but exciting. That has all changed with the launch of the Regal GS – the sexiest Buick to come out of Detroit in, well the last four decades.
The Grand Sport designation is nothing new to the Buick line up, having been associated with ‘70s era muscle cars but this is the first time that it has been used in a European sports sedan context. The stylish GS goes up against some well established rivals like the Acura TLX, Lexus ES, BMW 3 series and the like, a tough field to say the least. The Regal GS is more than just good looks, it’s a bona fide sports sedan. In fact a rebadged, German built, Opel Insignia, so the GS starts with the right genes. European engineered handling makes it the best tarmac gripping Buick ever.
Tumblr media
Red Brembo brake calipers immediately tell everyone that this is not your typical Buick.
While different drive options/trim levels are available elsewhere around the globe, we Canucks get only one trim/drive option- also the most desirable one - the all-wheel-drive version motivated by the 310 horsepower DOHC, 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing punching out 282 lb-ft of torque through a 9-speed automatic.
Tumblr media
Entry price is $44,045, my tester came with the Buick Experience Package ($3,495) that included the moonroof, a Bose premium 8-speaker sound system, wireless charging, an 8” touch screen, HD radio, LED leveling headlights, The Driver Confidence Package (yes you read that right) at $1,995 includes adaptive cruise, forward collision alert with automatic braking, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking and heads up display. The Ebony Twilight Metallic paint was a premium option at $495.
Tumblr media
The all-wheel-drive gets a torque vectoring rear axle, which only improves traction in slippery conditions and makes the Buick eat up the corners. Buick has also given us three driving modes to choose from, Touring, Sport and GS
Inside you’ve got one color choice, black. The supportive Recaros have a massage feature as well as being heated/cooled. Both driver’s and passenger seats have 14 adjustments to suit your body, including adjustable bolsters. Following with the German sport sedan traits, it includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Tumblr media
Rear seat passengers get ample legroom, but headroom is tight for taller occupants. With 30.cu.ft of space under the hatch with the rear seats up, with over 60 cu.ft with the rear seats folded, it betters many compact crossovers!
Is it perfect?
Non-functional air intakes in the front valance are mickey-mouse and a step backwards. Why not leave them open and help cool the brakes? No spare tire but a useless tire fix kit –that’ll help when you have a blow out or bend a wheel on Quebec’s pot holes. On the comical side, the audio system had mixed up the Cirius station numbers it’s 60s on 6 and not 660s on six….and the same could be said for 50s on 5 not 550s on 5, as well as 70s, 80s and 90s.
You can go through the gears manually with the console mounted shifter but paddle shifters would have been a nice touch to compliment the smooth 9-speed automatic.
Tumblr media
Will the GS steal buyers away from BMW? I hardly doubt it but it does give of us a formidable option to keep our performance dollars with domestic manufacturers, and the GS buyer has nothing to be apologetic for.

Subaru Ascent: If at first you don’t succeed…
Tumblr media
If you thought that Subaru already had a large SUV you’re right. The magic word here being had. The B9 Tribeca, later shortened to just Tribeca debuted in 2005 to, lets just say a less than stellar sales, and by 2014 had moved into the automotive history books of what once was.
It takes guts to admit that you were wrong, and it takes even big cojones to come back with a similar sized vehicle. Truth be told the SUV market has also changed over the last decade with SUVs growing increasingly larger, just like the population. Subaru appears to have been ahead of its time back in 2005 when 3-row SUV’s didn’t proliferate our roads, and minivans still reigned supreme for getting the platoon to school. But times have changed and so the new Ascent is the company’s answer to the latest trend.
Tumblr media
The Ascent is also Subaru’s largest vehicle to date, with 142 mm longer wheelbase and 134 mm longer in length than the Tribeca, so yes passenger comfort has been greatly increased. The midsize SUV is built on the company’s Global Platform, a chassis that is easily adaptable; serving as the basis for everything from their Impreza and Crosstrek to the Ascent.
Tumblr media
Available in four trim levels – Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier - with the entry level 8-passenger Convenience starting at a meager $36,695. Regardless of trim, there’s a new 2.4L direct-injected, turbocharged boxer four cylinder dolling out 260 horses and 277 lb-ft of torque through the High-torque Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission).
Tumblr media
Talk to anyone who’s ever driven a Subie in less than ideal conditions and they’ll swear by the symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive system. A new feature, X-Mode, pushes the traction envelope even further; at the push of a button, it monitors and controls four different vehicle dynamics, including engine, transmission, torque splitting and braking.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of standard driver-assistance technology in each Ascent without having to step up to trim levels, Items like automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist through the company’s EyeSight system. The base model gets a 6.5 inch infotainment screen while upper trim buyers will see an 8 inch screen. GPS however is only available in the two higher end trims (Limited and Premier). Both Touring and Limited are available in either seven or eight passenger configurations with captain’s chairs taking up the second row. My tester, the Premier trim comes only with the second row captains chairs. While all trims get heated front buckets it’s only the two higher trims that pamper their second row passengers with heated outboard seats. The third row looks a lot more inviting than some of it’s competitors but it’s still on the tight side with limited leg room. Still bear in mind this is a mid-size seven passenger and the seats are padded and comfortable to keep the small fry happy for longer drives. Oh and a pair of third-row USB charging ports become available in the Limited trim and are in addition to the standard two you’ll find in the front and second rows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rear cover blind and tow loop are stowed neatly under the cargo bay’s floor, the latter an option on some pricier suvs
.
Whether you’re out in the boonies or negotiating city streets, the Ascent doesn’t feel like a large bulky SUV. With above average handling and a minimum of body roll for a three-row SUV, Subaru’s use of the boxer engine and its advantageous low center of gravity immediately become apparent. It’s stable, with a soft luxurious ride and is generally quiet during normal highway cruising. But it does get loud when pushed hard.
Tumblr media
Is it perfect?
The drone of the CVT does get annoying but once you get passed that, the Ascent is typically Subaru; it does everything what it’s supposed to and does it well. I averaged 9.8L/100 km which is unprecedented in a 7-passenger sport ute. It may not be overly luxurious but you get what you pay for. I know my Subaru driving friends will all be looking at the Ascent when the time comes to turn in their current drives, and that alone will keep this big Subaru around for a long time to come.

Volkswagen Golf R: You’ll want one
If you’ve missed my installment of the Rabbit GTI, I urge you to scroll down the page and have a read.
Tumblr media
Now take the GTI and turn it up a notch, or three. The formula for the Golf R is very simple; take one German built spacious hatchback that already has solid, tight handling, and add gobbs of turbocharged horses to a 2.0L inline four cylinder. How many ponies? Two eighty-eight to be exact – enough to propel you well past the posted speed limit in less time than it takes you to say posted speed limit. Now stir in all-wheel drive to put all that power to the ground. Slam it to the ground for added handling. Dress it up with killer 19” wheels.
Tumblr media
Choose between the 6-speed manual available for $42,495 or the 7-speed dual clutch automatic with Tiptronic for $43,895. Now go have the most fun you can with your clothes on.
Tumblr media
Doesn’t look like it but there’s nearly 300 horses in there
Tumblr media
Quad exhaust tips tell you this is no ordinary Golf
The Golf R is everything you want in a performance sedan and then some. It makes no sense in a country with posted speed limits, but then neither do Porches, Ferraris and the like.
Price as tested: $49, 290*

Repost from @the_georgia_car_show • I finally found one of these things. Continuing the subject of Buicks, here’s my 2nd favorite station wagon of all time (after the Olds Custom Cruiser), the 2019 Buick Regal TourX. This car is a little secret within the Buick lineup, being America’s only production station wagon today and the first one since the Dodge Magnum and the first GM wagon since Buick’s 1990s Roadmasters. The TourX, like the Regal, is actually based on the Opel Insignia, a German car produced by GM. Buick’s treatment of the Insignia goes slightly beyond adding the Buick badge though, as they added blacked-out plastic fenders, extra chrome fixtures and a slightly revised interior, which gives it an outdoorsy vibe. In the end it still is an Insignia, but even though it doesn’t feel all that Buicky, the TourX has humongous cargo space and a very well-made interior, hallmarks of the classic Buick Roadmaster. The TourX is also priced very well and sold well above expectation, at least when it came out in 2018. The TourX was made to compete with the Subaru Outback, Volvo V60 and Audi A4 wagons, but unfortunately in doing so it falls short on many aspects. Buick is dying and as such, its brand image is just not that pronounced today and is purely fed off of its Chinese sales, not to mention the power and luxury features in the TourX lags quite behind its competition. Also the Regal as a whole is sadly set to be discontinued by 2021, with the TourX going down with it. Nonetheless, the Regal TourX still holds the spot of my 2nd favorite station wagon for its obscure nature and the fact it is the last and only station wagon sold here by an American brand. As for the specs, the TourX is equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder that is turbocharged to make 250hp and it is equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. DM me if you would like your ride featured. 2/15/2020 #buick #buickregaltourx #regal #buickregal #regaltourx #tourx #stationwagon #wagons #wagon #buicktourx #generalmotors #opelinsignia #vauxhallinsignia #randomcar #randomcars #randomcarspotting #carspotting #carspotter #hartsfieldjacksonairport #carphotography #longcaption #longcaptions #americanluxury https://www.instagram.com/p/B82dkaSJCEH/?igshid=1922dkb9z2sfu

This 1994 Buick Roadmaster Wagon Is a Wood-Paneled Time Capsule
Imagine buying a brand-new 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate wagon only to put a total of 5,600 miles on the odometer by 2019. It’s a rare circumstance, but that’s exactly the fate of Lot 67 at the 2019 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction. The best part is this time-capsule Roadmaster Estate is being sold at no reserve, meaning the highest bid is guaranteed to buy the car.
The Buick Roadmaster is one of the American luxury brand’s most distinguished nameplates and it was resurrected in 1991 after a 33-year hiatus. Essentially, the previous Buick Estate wagon was renamed the Roadmaster estate in that year, keeping its GM “B platform” full-size, rear-wheel-drive architecture. This 1994 Roadmaster Estate features the faux wood exterior trim that was standard to the model (or deleted for an invoice credit) and had several improvements from its launch year, including a 260-hp 5.7-liter LT1 V-8 engine (the same basic engine used in some C4 Corvettes) and a electronically controlled GM 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission. 1994 also saw the introduction of dual front airbags and a slight interior refresh.
This particular car is also specified with the factory towing package, which included a limited-slip differential, self-leveling suspension, and a heavy-duty cooling system with separate radiators for both oil and transmission. Roadmaster Wagons were rated by General Motors to tow up to 7,000 pounds under the right conditions. This car also features the rear-facing third row seat, meaning you can pack up to nine people including the driver in this ’90s land yacht. Suffice it to say, this is your grandfather’s Buick, quite different from today’s Regal TourX.
According to Barrett-Jackson, this Roadmaster Estate is original right down to the tires (you should definitely get those replaced if you intend to actually, you know, drive the thing) and we’re guessing this could be the nicest example left in existence. Obviously, a premium is likely to be paid for this Roadmaster’s low mileage and like-new condition, which leads us to believe the new owner will want to preserve the value by keeping the miles low and road time minimal. While we’d rather see this Roadmaster out mastering the road, family of six plus a dog on board, Airstream trailer in-tow, we do understand that cars are only original once—and this one is likely to be so for a long, long time. So, uh, maybe it isn’t a good idea to go hit trash cans with it.
Tune in to Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas live on the MotorTrend Network and don’t miss this 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate wagon selling on Thursday, October 3.
The 12th annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas sale roars into Sin City with more than 650 collector cars October 3-5, 2019, at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort. Every lot this year will be offered with no reserve, so you can expect excitement to be high as both bidders and sellers roll the dice on some of the world’s finest collector cars. The experts from MotorTrend will be there to bring you all the action LIVE from the auction block, so be sure to download the app for exclusive, live coverage!

Comma.ai launches Comma Two, a $999 kit that imbues cars with assisted driving features
Two years ago, analysts predicted that upwards of 10 million self-driving cars would hit the road by 2020. They weren’t the only ones — in 2015 and 2016, respectively, The Guardian and Business Insider proclaimed that people would become “permanent backseat driver[s],” riding in fully autonomous cars from 2020 “without needing any interaction from [drivers].”
Fast forward to today. Despite assurances that as many as 8 million driverless cars will be added to the road in 2025, even operations like that of Alphabet’s Waymo have yet to expand beyond selected metros. The reasons are regulatory as well as technological in nature, but expense plays a role. Conservative estimates peg the cost of outfitting cars at between $100,000 to 250,000 per car.
So why not go the do-it-yourself route? That’s the question George Hotz posed five years ago — he’s the American hacker best known for developing exploits that targeted Apple’s iOS operating system and reverse-engineering Sony’s PlayStation 3. In September 2015, Hotz founded Comma.ai with the goal of developing a semi-automated system — OpenPilot — that would improve cars’ visual perception and electromechanical motor control. Unlike most full-stack solutions in testing, it’s intended to replace OEM advanced driver-assistance systems, effectively imbuing cars with self-driving capabilities.
For the first time in its history, Comma.ai has an official presence at the Consumer Electronics Show. The company this week invited members of the press (including VentureBeat) to test-drive the latest version of its system — and to show off the Comma Two.
OpenPilot
OpenPilot’s development had a bit of a rocky start. The first version’s reveal in a Bloomberg article and video prompted a cease-and-desist letter from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which accused Comma.ai of testing a self-driving car in the state without a license. Subsequently, OpenPilot was packaged into a shippable device dubbed the Comma One, which again ran afoul of the authorities because of noncompliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Under pressure from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, Comma One was canceled, and Comma.ai open-sourced OpenPilot on GitHub.
Much has changed. In the roughly three years since Comma.ai made OpenPilot available to the public, over 1,500 users have racked up more than 14 million autonomous miles collectively, half of which were driven autonomously. (That’s up from 10 million miles as of May 2019.) Moreover, they’ve forked the GitHub repository over 2,300 times, adding features like automatic lane change and support for older Tesla, Chrysler, and Jeep models.
Comma Two
Comma.ai previously sold the Eon Devkit, a self-contained and windshield-mounted modified OnePlus phone. It started at $599, and once OpenPilot was installed to it, it automatically recognized car models by analyzing CAN network traffic. (The presence of certain CAN messages and their lengths is an indication of the model year, car brand, car model, and trim.) Companion devices dubbed the Panda and Giraffe plugged into cars’ OBD-II ports to track RPMs, MPG, cornering G-force, battery life, and more, and to provide access to the communication buses and enable the Eon to interface with the car.
The Comma Two replaces the Eon, but it retains all of the Eon’s features and then some. That said, it ditches the Panda for a single-cord solution, and it’s slightly pricier at $1,000 (though it’s available on a payment plan through Affirm).
The first batch of 300 units are available for purchase today. They’ll begin shipping later in the month, Hotz says.
The Comma Two is powered via OBD-C as opposed to by battery, which Hotz says was a top complaint among current Eon owners, and it has a larger mount as well as a custom fan-based hardware cooling solution. Like the Eon, which used a camera to recognize drivers’ faces and decelerate if it detected those drivers were distracted, the Comma Two performs facial recognition. In point of fact, it’s in improved in that it leverages two infrared sensors as opposed to an RGB sensor, enabling it to work during nighttime.
Other highlights include front and back cameras, as well as a fourth CAN bus to connect the OBD-II port and a low-power mode that automatically shuts off the Comma Two after three days to save car battery.
The Eon was equipped with cellular service and a SIM card supplied by Comma.ai. Data was unlimited (though capped to 512Kbps), and users could spring for Comma Prime if they so chose, a $24 per month service that enables remote access (via T-Mobile) from anywhere and online storage of 14 days’ worth of drive data (compared with the standard three days). The Comma Two also taps cellular for connectivity and plays nicely with new and existing Comma Prime subscriptions, and it comes with a year’s worth of storage.
By default, OpenPilot uploads driving data in real time from the road-facing camera, CAN, GPS, inertial measurement unit, magnetometer, thermal sensors, and operating system to Comma.ai’s servers for machine learning training and development purposes. Much of this data can be accessed locally through the Comma Connect app for iOS and Android or through Explorer, an online dashboard of recent drives from which disengagements (i.e., instances when a driver took control from OpenPilot) can be annotated to help improve the system.
From within the app, Comma Two owners can remotely wake up the Comma Two and snap a picture from either the front- or rear-facing cameras. Additionally, they’re able to switch among multiple units on the fly and to view their real-time geographic locations.
Compatibility
OpenPilot isn’t compatible with every car under the sun. It only works with these models and model years:
Acura ILX (2016-2018) and RDX (2016-2018)
Buick Regal (2018)
Chevrolet Malibu (2017)
Volt (2017-2018)
Cadillac ATS (2018) and Pacifica (2017-2018)
GMC Acadia Denali (2018)
Holden Astra (2018)
Honda Accord (2016-2019), Civic (2017-2019), Civic Hatchback (2017-2019), CR-V (2015-2019), CR-V Hybrid (2017-2019), Fit (2018), Odyssey (2018-2019), Passport (2019), Pilot (2016-2019), and Ridgeline (2017-2019)
Hyundai Elantra (2017-2019), Genesis (2018), and Santa Fe (2019)
Jeep Grand Cherokee (2016-2019)
Kia Optima (2019), Sorento (2018), and Stinger (2018)
Lexus RX Hybrid (2016-2019) and ES Hybrid (2019)
Subaru Crosstek (2018) and Impreza (2019)
Toyota Avalon (2016-2018), Camry (2018-2019), C-HR (2017-2019), Corolla (2017-2020), Corolla Hatchback (2019), Highlander (2017-2018), Highlander Hybrid (2018), Prius (2017-2019), Prius Prime (2017-2020), Rav4 (2016-2019), Rav4 Hybrid (2017-2018), and Sienna (2018)
Equally critically, OpenPilot isn’t capable of fully autonomous driving on all road types in all conditions. It can currently handle lane centering on roads without clear marking thanks to machine learning algorithms trained with user data, and it can maintain a safe follow distance and drive in stop-and-go traffic without supervision.
But it’s complicated. On all supported cars, OpenPilot’s automated lane centering and lane keep assist replace the stock systems. Only on specific supported cars does the system’s adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning slot in for default, however, and on no model does OpenPilot take over things like auto high-beam, blind spot warning, and side collision warning.
Driving experience
So how’s the driving experience with the Comma Two? “Smooth sailing” sums it up. OpenPilot indeed maintains its lane position even when the markings aren’t obvious — or aren’t visible. In a construction site with cones on either side and on an unpaved road without dividing lines, we watched OpenPilot deftly keep centered and maintain a comfortable following distance from the car in front of it.
It doesn’t much matter whether the road ahead is straight or severely curved. OpenPilot used to scrape OpenStreetMap for road curvature and traffic data, but it doesn’t any longer — now, it’s smart enough to calculate the trajectory in real time and to ensure it doesn’t speed along that trajectory too violently.
In this respect, OpenPilot is akin to Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, Volvo’s Pilot Assist, and GM’s Super Cruise, the last of which is one of the few systems that offers hands-free driving thanks to an eye-monitoring infrared camera. But in contrast to Super Cruise, which only engages on about 130,000 miles of U.S. and Canadian highway that GM has mapped, OpenPilot theoretically works anywhere there’s a discernible road.
OpenPilot can change lanes automatically, but it requires signaling from drivers before it does so — they have to first switch on a turn signal and nudge the steering wheel in the direction they’d like to go. It smoothly merging while keeping pace with the traffic ahead in our brief experience. But Hotz noted that OpenPilot won’t prevent lane changes when cars are to the immediate left or right, in the Comma Two’s blind spot.
Of course, Comma Two and OpenPilot can’t anticipate every situation. An SUV rear-ended a hatchback during our driving demo, forcing Hotz — who was behind the wheel — to tap the brake and disengage the system. And OpenPilot doesn’t handle things like red lights or stop signs — at least not yet.
Safety
Whether OpenPilot can be considered truly safe is a semantics question, in part. The driverless car industry lacks an agreed-upon metric for safety — Noah Zych, head of system safety at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, told Wired in an interview that miles traveled isn’t a particularly insightful measure without context like location. Derek Kan, U.S. secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, echoed that sentiment in remarks at a conference two years ago.
Companies like Intel’s Mobileye and Nvidia have proposed mathematical models that aim to codify good habits like giving other cars the right of way. Essentially, they’re decision-making policies in a motion-planning stack that monitor unsafe actions by analyzing real-time sensor data.
Comma.ai has a safety model of its own, which Hotz said involves several forms of regression testing. Commits aren’t merged to the OpenPilot codebase before they’ve met the test suite’s muster.
This aside, Comma.ai problematically hasn’t committed to regularly publishing any sort of statistics beyond miles driven, like disengagements or accidents. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles mandates that all companies testing autonomous cars report disengagements, but because Comma.ai doesn’t have a permit to test cars, it’s exempt from this requirement.
Hotz for his part asserts that the infrared sensors in Comma Two will improve safety substantially, as will the onboarding video customers are required to watch before they launch OpenPilot for the first time. On the subject of the former, a warning appears on the Comma Two’s screen if a driver diverts their eyes from the road for four seconds, and after six seconds, OpenPilot disengages and begins to slow down. (Unclicking the driver-side seat belt or opening the car door also disengages the system.)
For what it’s worth, we encountered only one disengagement — Hotz’s stop to avoid the accident — over roughly 7 miles and 25 minutes of driving  “We pushed on nuance [with this latest version of OpenPilot],” said Hotz. “Intersections have no lane lines — it’s unclear where you should go. [OpenPilot] follows the path that the human would follow.”
Backend improvements
On the backend side of the OpenPilot equation, new is a simulation environment called the Small Offset Simulator that loads in real-world routes and simulates deviations of them. “You can’t just take a lot of data and train a model to mimic the data, because that model doesn’t realize that if it takes action, the world will change,” said Hotz. “The only way to really do that is to build a simulator.”
Using a technique called projected geometry and generative adversarial networks (GANs), or two-part AI models comprising generators that synthesize data samples and discriminators that attempt to distinguish between the synthesized samples and real data, the simulator redraws scenes meters to the left or right or with curvature and other perturbations. Hotz said that the models within the Small Offset Simulator are now training on 200,000 minutes of driving data collected by Eon users.
It’s similar — but not quite the same — as the simulation environments deployed internally by Uber, Waymo, and others. GM’s Cruise, for instance, leverages a replay approach that involves extracting real-world sensor data, playing it back against the car’s software, and comparing the performance with human-labeled ground truth data. Cruise also engages in planning simulation, which lets the company’s data scientists create up to hundreds of thousands of variations of a scenario by tweaking variables like the speed of oncoming cars and the space between them.
Future developments
Going forward, Comma.ai plans to release new hardware on roughly a yearly cadence — Hotz believes its business model of selling devices at profit and eating the cost of software development is sustainable. (Comma.ai has raised $8.1 million in venture capital to date across two funding rounds, the most recent of which closed in April 2018.) As for OpenPilot, achieving a better end-to-end driving experience remains an acute area of focus for the engineering team.
“What we want to do is move away from [lead car following] and move to an end-to-end longitudinal [model],” he said. “One of the problems we as a company have trying to convey is, when it works well, you don’t even notice it. Our company mission is to solve self-driving cars while shipping intermediaries.”
But Comma.ai isn’t discouraging rivals from cloning its hardware and piggybacking off of OpenPilot. In fact, Hotz encourages it, just as he encourages those with proprietary solutions to compete with Comma.ai.
One such challenger — former Yahoo CTO John Hayes’ Ghost Locomotion — emerged from stealth last November promising an aftermarket self-driving kit to retrofit existing cars. Another — Cambridge, U.K.-based Wayve — claims its driverless cars self-improve by learning from safety driver interventions. Mobileye doesn’t sell a consumer product, but like Comma.ai, its driverless tech leans on cameras for autonomous decision-making. And then there’s Tesla, which recently release a preview of an active guidance system (Navigate on Autopilot) that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes.
Hotz is unconcerned. “Mobileye is the Windows [of autonomous driving] that’s going to do Microsoft-style business development deals with big companies, Tesla’s the Mac that’s going to ship sexy hardware to consumers, and we’re the Linux,” he said. “Everybody should use us for whatever they want.”

Is a hatchback a station wagon?
The hatchback and the station wagon are very close in design. They can often be confused as the same car but there are significant differences that once captured can help you identify a hatchback from a station wagon.
A hatchback, can be referred to as a car design that features a sloping back onto which a rear door is hinged. This door encloses the cargo area. Often, like station wagons, hatchbacks may also have an extra foldable seat that allows for more passenger capacity when unfolded or for more baggage capacity when folded.
A station wagon on the other hand can be defined as a car design that elongates the body of the car to have distinct areas of the car, the front which houses the engine and the back which houses the passenger and cargo area. It has a backdoor referred to as a tailgate that is covered by the roof of the vehicle that is used to access the large cargo area.
Similarities between the hatchback and the station wagon
Both the station wagon and the hatchback vehicle have a tailgate door. This is a door used to access the cargo area of the vehicles.
Another similarity between the two types of vehicles is the fact that they both may or may not have and extra row of foldable rear seats that enhance the load carrying capacity of the vehicle. Where there is not an extra row of seats, the available row of seats is foldable enabling a large load capacity.
Differences between the hatchback and the station wagon
Design
The station wagon is different in design from the hatchback as it tends to have four easily identifiable parts of the car. This design is often referred to as the D pillar as hatchbacks tend to go up to C and do not have a D pillar.
Station wagons tend to have a boxy shape that is well streamlined on hatchbacks. As a result you can easily visualize the distinct parts. In a station wagon, the A pillar defines the front part that holds the engine. The B pillar is the driver and front passenger part, the C pillar is the back passenger seat. The D pillar is the baggage part.
In a hatchback the D part is not available as it tailgate tends to be part of the well contoured car body while in the station wagon, the body is much longer and the tailgate is under the roof of the car thus a D pillar.
Shape of tailgate
Another difference of the two car designs is that the tailgate in the station wagon tends to be more vertical as it is under a roof which is not the case with a hatchback whose tailgate is part of the well streamlined design of the car.
Cargo floor design
The station wagon is a cargo friendly vehicle compared to the hatchback. Primary in its design, is the cargo floor design that is mostly flat to ensure that the vehicle has a higher load capacity. The hatchback on the other hand, has a contoured floor on which cargo is arranged. By having a contoured floor, it thus has less capacity compared to the station wagon.
Rear suspensions
Rear suspensions are common in station wagons to enhance the load capacity. This is a rarity in the hatchbacks.
Station wagons also feature a two door tail gate referred to as a split gate. Picture a two door fridge and you can consider it a station wagon.
Windows on the tailgate
Station wagons also have windows on the tailgate that can open and close independent of the tailgate. So, if the cargo being stored or removed from the vehicle is small and does not need for you to open the whole tailgate, the window provides the convenience of easily lifting out or putting in the small load into the car.
Third row seats
Station wagons also sometimes feature a third row of seats which could be forward or rear facing. They can be folded to enhance the load capacity or when there are more passengers, they can be accessed from the tailgate.
Ground clearance
Over time, with efficient car designs, it has become quite difficult to differentiate between the two car designs as they have become very similar. Even so, modern station wagons are raised and have a higher ground clearance setting them apart from the hatchback that is often a poor off-road vehicle unlike the station wagon.
Off-road capacity
Unlike many hatchbacks, station wagons have great off-road capacity due to the nature of their design. They have large tires that allow them space from the ground and can therefore venture further away from highways and proper roads unlike hatchbacks.
Now you know the top station wagons in 2019
Station wagons are highly versatile cars and that they are making a comeback is testament to their longevity and practicality of their design. They are superior vehicles with capacity to carry lots of cargo and passengers at the same time. In addition, without passengers they can easily carry more cargo.
For off-road drivers, the station wagon does not disappoint. With its large ground clearance, adventurous wagon owners are not hindered from venturing into the unknown just because their car may get tangled in the grass.
Finally, station wagons safety ratings are quite high. They can be safely driven in the city and off the highway. They incorporate technology in their design that helps enhance their safety features and their highly developed automatic braking system.  For this reason, they are favorable for daily driving to and from work and also for longer and adventurous drives that are difficult and uncomfortable to make in other types of cars.

GM trademarks "Enspire" name, likely for new Buick crossover
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=6463&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr Buick Enspire electric SUV concept General Motors has once again filed to trademark the “Enspire” name, which points to the possibility we’ll soon see a new Buick crossover by that name. According to a GM Authority report on Sunday, the automaker received approval for the trademark on Dec. 11. It’s the second time GM has filed to trademark the name after it first showed up in 2015. Buick also showed the Enspire concept vehicle in China this past April, which likely foreshadowed a production crossover. Buick Enspire electric SUV concept Per the report, such a crossover currently has an internal codename of E2UB. The GM lingo translates to a utility vehicle riding on the E2 platform for the Buick brand. Other GM vehicles that ride on the E2 platform include the Chevrolet Malibu, Buick Regal, and international sedans such as the Opel Insignia and Holden Commodore. The 2019 Cadillac XT4 also rides on the E2 platform, and it provides our best look at the production version of the Buick Enspire’s dimensions and packaging. If the Enspire does ride on the E2 platform, we can expect compact proportions and a front-wheel-drive layout with optional all-wheel drive. However, powertrains are a wildcard. The XT4 features a Cadillac-exclusive 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine. The architecture will fit inline-4 and V-6 engines, but it’s highly unlikely we’ll see a V-6 under the hood. It’s worth noting the Enspire concept was a battery-electric vehicle. GM, without naming the test procedure, said the concept would travel 370 miles on a single charge with “eMotion electric propulsion technology.” Buick Enspire electric SUV concept Battery type, electric motors, or charging systems were not divulged with the concept’s reveal. Of course, as a concept vehicle,l the powertain could have also been conceptual. It’s unclear how Buick would handle the current Envision and Enspire on sale side-by-side. Both would likely boast similar dimensions, though the Enspire would feature a far more modern interior and Buick’s latest design motifs. However, the Envision is built in China and with the recent uncertainty over tariffs, and Enspire could replace the Envision. We’ll likely hear more about a future Buick Enspire next year. See this 1981 Daytona 500-winning and street-driven Buick Regal replica on 2019 HOT ROD Power Tour
The ‘80s is an overlooked era of NASCAR. However, it was time of great importance for the sport, filled with moments like Air Force One landing along-side the 1984 Firecracker 400, just Google it. That same race marked Richard Petty’s record-setting 200th win. By that point, Petty had earned the moniker of “The King”, but in the ‘80s he slammed the record books closed, obtaining records he still holds today.
Last weekend at the ARCA Menards 200 in Daytona, Petty’s Garage unveiled a 1981 Buick Regal to honor The King’s historic 7th Daytona 500 win—the most wins by any driver.
“I remember the ’81 race perfectly because my crew chief Dale Inman outsmarted them all,” said Petty. “Petty’s Garage has done an outstanding job of replicating the race car and keeping it classic but also modernizing it with today’s trends.” Inman is one of the most successful crew chiefs in NASCAR history with eight championships and 193 wins.
General Tire conceived the plan to build this road-worthy Buick less than two months ago. It started life as a 1984 Buick Regal Miller Lite promo vehicle, 1 of 25. An all steel body was built identical to the original, which, luckily for Petty’s Garage, sits in their Level Cross, North Carolina museum.
This lightning-fast build took only a month. “If it weren’t for the whole team coming together to build this thing, it wouldn’t have happened in such a short time,” said fabricator Greg Turner (owner and builder of a recent Car Craft feature car). “It was a really fun build, and it’ll be a fun car to drive.”
Currently, the Buick sits on 18×9 Vision 55 Rally wheels with G Max RS tires. Forgeline is now custom building new 18-inch wheels to resemble the original stock car wheels.
The original 358ci-Buick race engine is replaced by 376 cubes of modern power: An LS3 crate engine with a Texas Speed Stage 3 cam kit and Holley EFI—a similar EFI system found on the current Monster Cup cars. A Tremec six-speed manual from Silver Sport Transmissions handles shifting duties. The Buick produced 430 hp at the wheels.
The mostly bare-bones stock car interior features a one-piece metal dash with Holley 7-inch digital display. There’s no carpet, but fully functioning windows and an Alpine stereo system to make for a comfortable Long Hauler. There are some touches from The King too: a Petty Blue shifter ball and Petty’s Garage Hummingbird steering-wheel center. The car also features RideTech suspension, Wilwood brakes, MagnaFlow exhaust, and a trunk-mounted Odyssey battery.
“…We want to pay homage to Richard and one of the most iconic stock cars,” said Travis Roffler, Director of Marketing for General Tire. “…This car is a showstopper and will be part of our General Tire display that travels across the country. We look forward to letting fans get up and close to it.” General Tire plans to have the car through the entire 2019 HOT ROD Power Tour. See dates and schedule here.

Car Compare: 2019 Lexus ES 350 vs. TLX, Q50, MKZ, and LaCrosse
The ES is Lexus’ best-selling car, and it’s a best-seller in the shrinking “near lux” sedan segment it helped define. The segment’s original formula was to take a squillion-selling midsize sedan (Toyota Camry, in Lexus’ case), tinsel it up, and slap a swanky badge on it. Infiniti’s I30 was a dolled-up Nissan Maxima; Acura’s Vigor was an extensively revised Honda Accord; Lincoln’s MKZ (née Zephyr) was a costumed Ford Fusion. The world has moved on.
Today Lexus bases the ES on larger Avalon underpinnings and is extending the model’s appeal with both a performance-oriented F Sport variant and a new Ultra Lux package. The Infiniti Q50 has no mainstream Nissan counterpart on our shores. The Acura TLX/Honda Accord relationship remains fairly distant, and the Lincoln MKZ no longer shares any major sheetmetal with the Fusion. We’re also throwing the Buick LaCrosse in for consideration. It primarily targets Toyota’s Avalon, but in its swankiest new Avenir trim, it’s priced and positioned to fight the Lexus.
After spending a week in an Ultra Lux 2019 Lexus ES 350 (an ES 350 F Sport is shown in this story), we’ve rounded up some relevant specifications data, reviewed our notes from earlier drives of the key competitors, and are ready to make a few predictions on how a full comparison of the major players might shake out.
Sizing Up
As all of the original contenders have evolved, the Infiniti and Acura entrants have shrunk. The Q50 measures 6.3 inches shorter in length and 1.6 inches narrower than the ES, which tightens its rear seat and trunk somewhat, but the front seat boasts 2 inches more head- and legroom, so overall space is down just 1.6 cubic feet overall. Similarly, the Acura TLX gives up 4.2 inches in length at a cost of rear legroom and trunk volume while adding front-seat space. The Buick is larger in all exterior dimensions, but the payoff is just a slightly larger front-seat compartment—the trunk and rear seat are slightly smaller than in the Lexus. Lincoln matches Lexus almost to the tenth on overall interior and trunk volume while measuring 2 inches shorter in length and 1.2 inch taller. But Lexus remains the benchmark for space, boasting the biggest trunk (16.7 cubes) and back seat (by a nose at 46.6 cubic feet).
Powertrain Choice
Lexus offers your choice of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid electric with an e-CVT good for 215 hp or a 302-hp 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a conventional eight-speed automatic. Both powertrains spin the front wheels. Most of the competition now offers a choice of all-wheel drive (usually for no more money than our front-drive ES 350 Ultra Lux), which I rather missed as mid-February snow- and ice-storms bedeviled my week with an ES on all-season rubber. Acura offers a 2.4-liter 206-hp four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic or a 3.5-liter 290-hp V-6 and nine-speed auto, and honest-ta-goodness torque-vectoring all-wheel drive can be had with the V-6. Infiniti sells its older, fixed-compression-ratio 2.0-liter turbo-four (208 hp) and a choice of two twin-turbo V-6s producing 300 or 400 hp. All three engines spin the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic with all-wheel drive optional on any engine. Lincoln sees Infiniti’s 2.0T and pair of V-6 twin-turbos powering the front or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic and raises with a front-drive hybrid/e-CVT.
The Buick offers an eAssist 2.5-liter mild-hybrid good for 194 hp paired with a six-speed automatic or a 3.6-liter V-6 that sends 310 horses to the front or all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic. So Lincoln wins on breadth of offerings, but if you don’t need all-wheel traction, Lexus remains tough to beat in terms of buttery drivetrain refinement, and its hybrid fuel economy tops the Lincoln’s (44 mpg to 41, EPA combined—the LaCrosse eAssist ranks way lower at 29 mpg).
Performance
Let’s face it, cars in this class are meant to be driven in a stately manner between stately manors. So there’s little shame in Lexus not really contending for pink slips. After testing a mechanically identical Toyota Avalon of nearly the same weight (stay tuned for a instrumented track test of the 2019 ES 350), we found the V-6 needs just over 6.0 seconds to hit 60 mph, about the same as the AWD Acura V-6, a few tenths behind the Buick V-6, and well in arrears of the 400-horse twin-turbo V-6 Lincoln (5.2) and Infiniti (4.5). Thanks possibly to its 148-pound weight advantage, the ES 300h hybrid outruns the MKZ 2.0H, 7.8 to 8.7 seconds (we haven’t tested a LaCrosse eAssist mild-hybrid).
Neither ES is particularly enthusiastic about cornering or braking. Where’s the fire? Endeavor to leave a few minutes earlier, and you won’t need to tear around so. Opting for the ES 350 F Sport variant adds adaptive dampers that minimize body pitch and roll, but don’t expect lap times to drop much. Basically, we find the Ultra Lux approach to be more in keeping with the ES’ natural role as the regal and aloof “adult” in this class, with the Buick a very close second. You surely don’t need us to tell you that Tail of the Dragon runners will find greater joy with one of the twin-turbo V-6 options or even the Acura SH-AWD (or better still, an Alfa Giulia or Genesis G70).
Creature Comforts
When you line up the standard features lists for the top-tier offerings in this class, the equipment is pretty extensive, with most offering supple leather and real wood. Buick and Acura offer few if any additional options on their top-shelf offerings, but Infiniti, Lexus, and Lincoln buyers can further gild their lilies with numerous pricey option packages. We find it slightly obnoxious that Lexus’ Ultra Lux customer has to drop another $1,900 to get the blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, and a surround-view camera system, considering many of these features come standard on much cheaper cars than the $50,959 of our loaded 2019 ES 350 tester.
We don’t begrudge automakers for charging for top-shelf audio—$3,000 for Mark Levinson at Lexus and $4,000 for Revel Ultima (bundled with a pano roof and LED lamps) at Lincoln. That lets talk radio listeners save the cash. An interesting $950 option on our Lexus—18-inch wheels with sound-absorbing rings inside. It’s nice to see wheel options that add quietness instead of subtracting compliance with thinner sidewalls, and they (along with acoustic front side glass and more) do lend a library-like atmosphere at speed. As for how cosseting and pleasant the cars are to live in, the Buick looks stunning in photos, but the materials let it down. The Acura and Infiniti are more businesslike and purposeful. Lexus delivers great materials marred slightly by a busy design, wood stained so dark it’s unrecognizable as wood, door pulls that are hard to reach if belted in with the door fully open, and that touchpad user interface that none of us has truly bonded with. Lincoln’s multi-contour seats with Active Motion are pretty impressive, its wood looks like wood, and its Sync 3 system is a breeze to live with.
Conclusions
After a week in the Lexus I understand why the ES continues to outsell these four competitors by between 40 and 212 percent (Q50 and LaCrosse), and why its rate of sales decrease year-over-year was less than half what the others suffered from 2017 to 2018. It looks good from all angles except the front, and it goes about its business without any attention-grabbing engine or tire noises, automatically turning on its heated steering wheel and seats, then automatically turning them down about 10 minutes into a journey. It’s a faithful automotive valet—solicitous, never argumentative, seen but not heard. Toss in a strong record for reliability and resale value, and what non–car enthusiast could resist? So in a consumer-focused Big Test focusing on packaging, safety, reliability, refinement, and the like, I boldly predict that Lexus would grab the gold. Second place might be hotly contested by a heavily optioned 300-hp Q50 Luxe AWD and Acura TLX SH-AWD. I see a Lincoln MKZ 3.0 Reserve II AWD finishing a close third and Buick’s LaCrosse Avenir AWD bringing up the rear. Stay tuned to check these predictions against a future test—unless the category shrinks to complete insignificance before we get around to it …

CarGurus Investigates the Rise of the Wagon
Who remembers the “wood”-paneled station wagons of our childhoods? We can’t help but wonder whether they’re making a comeback despite the declining popularity of sedans.
If you scan the headlines, SUVs and crossovers are taking over and the sedan is dead. But CarGurus data shows the story is more complicated than that: Younger shoppers still want new and used sedans, because they offer more value and are still great options. But most American automakers have nixed sedans, with the exception of performance vehicles. European automakers continue to make sedans, such as the 2020 Volkswagen Passat, which offer more premium features and design elements, such as heated front and rear seats and dual-zone climate control. But what of the wagon? Let’s take a closer look at some recent debuts.
The wagon comeback
In the past two years, we’ve seen the introduction of several new wagons. Volvo, which already had the V60, debuted the new V90 in 2017 (a previous version was offered in the US in 1998), which we reviewed the 2018. Shoppers can now get an off-road friendly version of the V90, called the V90 Cross Country, which offers more ground clearance, black cladding around the wheels, and, of course, all-wheel drive (AWD). Jaguar, known for its luxury sedans like the XJ Series, broke tradition and introduced the XF Sportbrake in 2018. Its starting price is in line with the rest of the luxury brand’s vehicles, and it offers 20-inch wheels, soft-close doors, heated seats, and more cubic feet of cargo space than the F-Pace.
Buick is the other automaker that introduced a wagon in 2018 with its Regal TourX. Our reviewer notes the Regal TourX can work as a premium alternative to brands like Subaru, with its much-beloved Outback. The TourX has premium touches, like dual-zone climate control, while also featuring more rugged details like plastic cladding around each wheel well and a roof rack along with AWD.
We looked at the number of searches for each of these three wagons in the second half of 2018 and compared that to the first six months of the year. While two of those new wagons saw an increase in searches, we were surprised to see that the Buick Regal TourX had the bigger boost, with a staggering 69% increase. The V90 saw a 30% increase in the number of searches. Only the XF Sportbrake saw a decrease, of 4%, in the second half of 2018 compared to the prior six months.
The future of the wagon
Based on searches on CarGurus, the wagon is indeed making a comeback. Bloomberg suggested the increased interest in wagons is a result of shoppers now having more wagon choices. It also may be due to the smaller number of options for sedan shoppers. Wagons, thanks to their lower center of gravity, feature less body roll and better handling than their crossover and SUV counterparts while not losing any of the capabilities or close-to-the-road driving experience a sedan would offer.
