2020 Ford Mustang GT Coupe

America’s original pony car has earned fanfare for its timeless styling, potent V-8 engine, and reasonable pricing. Every year since 2013, the Ford Mustang GT Coupe has won IntelliChoice’s Best Value Performance Car award, a streak that continues in 2020. It holds 57 percent of its value, with a $48,660 five-year ownership cost total. How does the Mustang GT compare to its nemesis, the Chevrolet Camaro SS? The Camaro is more expensive than the Mustang, holding only 51 percent of its value and costing $53,210 over the same period.

2020 Acura RDX

As we found over a year with an RDX in the MotorTrend long-term test fleet, the Acura has quick acceleration and sweet handling, aided by its clever SH-AWD system. For purposes of value the RDX definitely appeals: it wins IntelliChoice’s Best Overall Value Award in its class. Retained value is nearly 49 percent, just about average for the class. However, five-year ownership cost of $47,214 is less than any competitor, aided a bit by low insurance costs.

2020 Porsche 718 GT4 and 718 Spyder

Porsche irked its ardent fans when it switched the Boxster and Cayman from atmospheric flat-sixes to turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Time behind the wheel proved that two fewer pistons didn’t mean any less mid-engine magic—actually, the 718 might provide even more of it depending on the model you pick. Nonetheless, Porsche appeased the purists by fitting a superb flat-six in the range-topping 718 GT4 and Spyder, which tie for IntelliChoice’s Best Value Premium Performance Car award. Credit for that goes in part to class-best retained value of 63 percent.

2020 BMW Z4 sDrive30i

Although the latest Z4 controversially shares its underpinnings with the Toyota Supra, we’ve found the two vehicles to offer entirely unique driving experiences. The BMW wins the Best Value Premium Convertible Award, thanks partially to its 46 percent retained value and $55,707 five-year running cost. In its IntelliChoice class, the four-cylinder Z4’s closest finisher was actually the BMW 230i convertible.

2020 Porsche 911

Porsche’s infamous options list can take the price of its rear-engine icon into supercar territory, but at least the 911’s performance backs that up. So how is the 911 a good value? It resists depreciation just like it does changes in design. According to IntelliChoice, certain 911 variants can hold up to 65 percent of their value over a five-year period, by far the highest in the Luxury Performance Car class. That helps it earn a fourth consecutive win for Best Overall Value in that class; Porsche also wins Highest Retained Value among Premium Brands. You’ll pay dearly just to use the 911—IntelliChoice predicts total ownership costs well over $90,000—but it’ll still be worth plenty if you decide to sell. And, if you love driving, it’s worth every cent. After all, the 911 was MotorTrend’s 2019 Best Driver’s Car.

2020 BMW 230i

Although BMW’s ultimate performance models are stupendously quick, that speed comes through computerized filters that sap communication and feel. In the 230i, it’s the other way around. Its acceleration won’t stretch your cheeks back, but it’s delightfully engaging on a twisty road. The BMW 230i wins IntelliChoice’s Best Overall Value Award for Premium Sporty Coupes, showing class-average value retention of 44 percent, but a class-best five-year ownership cost total of $45,772.

Luego de su presentación como primicia mundial en una recepción privada de Acura el 15 de agosto, el Concepto Type S de Acura hizo su debut público en The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, para después ser exhibido en el histórico Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn.

New York Auto Show: A Big Apple Serving of Practical Luxury

Electric and autonomous vehicles are the future. But EVs and AVs are being overshadowed by consumers’ desire for more crossover and sport utility vehicles, however they’re powered or driven, in North America. The New York International Auto Show—which opens to the public on March 30, with press and analyst previews happening now—is a big case in point.

Among the big reveals at this year’s NYIAS are refreshed versions of two compact SUVs that are crucial to their brands, the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester, as well as debuts including the Cadillac XT4 (above), Lincoln Aviator, a smaller version of the seven-seat Volksagen Atlas and an updated Hyundai Tucson.

There are market-specific reasons why some of these vehicles are making their debuts in the Big Apple. The Tri-State area in which New York is located over-indexes for luxury buyers, and upscale consumers are flocking to utility vehicles as never before. Another reason show-goers are expected to demonstrate major interest in SUVs such as the all-wheel-drive new Forester—record recent snowfalls have boosted the appeal of roomy, comfortable vehicles with all-weather skills.

Here’s a brand-by-brand look of what auto-buyers and buffs will be checking out at the New York Auto Show—and what it means from each brand’s perspective:

Acura: The Honda-owned luxury brand will debut a production version of its new RDX crossover on the heels of introducing the concept of the vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The model, available mid-year, boasts a fresh exterior design; a new, more intuitive dashboard; and an elegant user interface.

Cadillac: Seeking utility vehicles to broaden its lineup and hit the sweet spot in the premium market these days, Cadillac introduced the XT4 compact utility (at top) at its Cadillac House HQ in Soho; it conveys a more sculpted design language for Cadillac which, for more than a decade, has emphasized exterior angularity. The 2019 CT6 V-Sport, meanwhile, is the first-ever V-Performance model of its top-of-range sedan. The introduction of the high-performance variant coincides with a makeover of the entire CT6 lineup that incorporates the newest iteration of Cadillac’s design language featured on the Escala Concept.

Fiat: The FCA-owned brand will be debuting the latest edition of its popular 500 series, this time an Urbana Edition that offers what the automaker calls a “unique, urban look” with black-trimmed exterior lights, “hyper-black” aluminum wheels and black sport-cloth front bucket seats with silver accent stitching.

Jaguar: The Tata-owned British luxury icon, which just opened its North America HQ across the Hudson River in New Jersey, will be showing its Tesla-challenging production I-PACE all-electric vehicle, which “takes advantage of the inherent benefits found with EV packaging, all while offering the driving dynamics expected of all Jaguar vehicles.” Also on show: the E-PACE, Jaguar’s first compact SUV, and the F-PACE, its “most powerful performance SUV to date.”

Lexus: Toyota’s luxury marque is “opening a new gateway into the brand,” Lexus said, with the all-new UX compact luxury crossover that is making an arty (see below) North American debut in New York. It features a “bold new design, ultra-efficient new powertrains and innovative luxury features” such as Amazon Alexa integration.

Subaru: The upstart brand has been re-engineering the underpinnings of its vehicles. “Even with the larger SUV range” that Subaru is introducing, says IHS Markit automotive analyst Stephanie Brinley, the all-new “Forester is forecast to continue to deliver about 26 percent of the brand’s U.S. sales going forward.”

Toyota: The RAV4 crossover was America’s best-selling vehicle last year (with the exception of pickup trucks).   2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport Review – After seeing it last year as a test mule, the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2019 no longer appeared. Anyway, we are still looking for a reliable source to confirm the next generation SUV. The crossover belongs to the luxury middle class, which offers a seating arrangement with two or three rows. For the new Discovery Sport, the same platform receives updates to make this vehicle more efficient on the roads.

Changes to the next generation of Land Rover Discovery Sport 2019 will include changes to the transmission system. The new units will also add a new suspension system. The Land Rover Discovery Sport 2019 will maintain its nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive configuration.

  Diesel engine

There is another possibility, but for non-US buyers. The Discovery Sport crossover is also diesel in the United Kingdom, Australia, and other markets. But in North America, that is not the case. Ford F-150 Diesel: 2019 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Finalist

WE LIKE Good fuel economy, quiet ride

WE DON’T LIKE Poor towing performance, ponderous acceleration

Fresh off last year’s TOTY win, the Ford F-150 returns with a diesel engine and a few surprises up its sleeve.

This year marks the first time Ford has offered a diesel variant of the F-150. Under the sheetmetal sits a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 making 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. As impressive as those numbers sound, sometimes it still isn’t quite enough juice.

“It feels fine at city speeds, but there’s nothing there at highway speeds,” Christian Seabaugh said.

We can forgive its leisurely gait on the highway because of its superior fuel economy. In our Real MPG tests, this truck creamed competitors by returning 20.9/28.5/23.7 mpg city/highway/combined. It performed better than its EPA rating of 20/25/22 mpg, as well.

The truck benefits from a surprisingly quiet ride and nice handling unladen, though we took note of its rough edges, including its firm ride and body roll. “If you want a truck that drives like a truck, this is it,” Scott Evans said. “In the age of adaptive dampers, air springs, and coil springs, it’s definitely the busiest ride here.”

Unfortunately, this truck failed in a key area where it was meant to excel: towing. Handling suffered when attached to a trailer, and drivers can feel plenty of turbo lag off the line. It took 22.0 seconds to reach 60 mph under load—4.3 seconds slower than the next-slowest truck. What’s more, when Kim Reynolds was climbing the Davis Dam grade, the F-150 would hang at 53 mph for a while before getting the gumption to accelerate again. In addition to the uncompetitive acceleration, our tester’s dated interior doesn’t really befit its $64,935 price tag.

Acura is working to beef up its performance cred, and the RDX is a successful product of this effort. The SQ5 is quiet on the highway, allowing you to enjoy the sumptuous interior. It’s a top pick among compact luxury SUVs when it comes to interior technology, with an easy-to-operate screen and fully digital instrument cluster. The SQ5 provides sharper driving dynamics than the standard Q5, thanks in part to its 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 349 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

2019 Jaguar I-Pace – $70,525

The I-Pace electric crossover is a worthy alternative to the larger Tesla Model X. It benefits from a precise steering and a smooth ride, exhibiting almost no body roll. As we found out in our 2019 SUV of the Year competition, it even performs well off-road in sand pits and steep dirt hills. Its electric motors produce a combined 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque, making for a 4.0-second run to 60 mph. Range is not a worry, because the I-Pace is rated to travel 234 miles on a charge.

2020 Lexus NX – $37,745

The Lexus NX is a smooth-riding crossover and has an equally comfortable interior. What it lacks in headroom it makes up for with plenty of legroom front and rear. Along with satisfying handling, we like the standard 2.0-liter turbo-four with 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque as well as the efficient 194-hp hybrid model. The Lexus NX 300h was named the Best Overall Value for a premium vehicle by IntelliChoice.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA – $35,245

Is it a hatchback or a crossover? Whatever you want to call this hot hatch on stilts, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is fun to drive because of its nimble handling. Its standard 2.0-liter turbo-four engine makes a just-enough 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the GLA 45 is rip-roaring fun with 375 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC – $43,495

MotorTrend’s 2017 SUV of the Year has only gotten better over time. For the 2020 model year, it receives a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four. With 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, the unit feels more like a V-6 than a four-cylinder. If you want a ridiculous amount of power, opt for the V-8 with up to 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. This is one of the few small luxury SUVs to offer a plug-in hybrid variant; this version makes 315 hp and 516 lb-ft.

2020 Porsche Macan – $52,250

Now Porsche’s best-selling model, the Macan appeals to buyers looking for top-notch performance. In addition to its buttery smooth ride and sharp cornering abilities, the well-rounded Macan S packs a robust 3.0-liter turbo V-6 with 348 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a 248-hp, 273 lb-ft turbo-four engine and a 434-hp, 406 lb-ft V-6 option.

2020 Volvo XC40 – $34,695

This small SUV is full of surprises, from its spunky exterior to its unique interior with bag hooks, a ski pass-through, and optional orange carpeting. An available 2.0-liter turbo-four provides quick acceleration from its 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. In a review, we noted the XC40’s quick reflexes are well suited to urban driving.

This well-rounded SUV boasts a quiet ride, good visibility, and plenty of room for passengers and cargo. BMW’s compact X3 is a Top Safety Pick+ when paired with optional front crash prevention technology and specific headlights. The XDrive30i model equipped with the Executive package is the only one that has earned the Good-rated headlights needed for IIHS’ top award. IIHS also tested xDrive30i models with Marginal-rated lights. In addition to safety, the X3 has a lot of other admirable traits. We enjoy the buttery smooth 3.0-liter six-cylinder paired to an equally competent eight-speed transmission in the M40i model.

2019 BMW X5

The all-new BMW X5 handles surprisingly well for its size, and it exhibits little body roll on the pavement so you can expect a smooth ride. It also impresses off the beaten path when paired with an off-road package. In terms of safety, the X5 gets Top Safety Pick+ status on certain xDrive40i and xDrive50i models equipped with Good-rated headlights. It gets a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, receiving four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test, and four stars in the rollover test.

2019–20 Infiniti QX60

This midsize SUV benefits from a comfortable ride and lots of standard features. Based on the Nissan Pathfinder, this luxury SUV gets a 3.5-liter V-6 with a robust 295 hp. In IIHS tests, QX60s built after May 2019 earn a Top Safety Pick when paired with Acceptable-rated headlights with high-beam assist on the Luxe trim.

Apparently, high-riding hatchbacks are the new crossovers. The pint-sized UX is great for the city, offering a comfortable ride over uneven surfaces at normal speeds. And although it’s the smallest utility vehicle in Lexus’ lineup, the interior feels expensive for the most part. Lexus doesn’t skimp on safety, either, offering a standard pre-collision system. This system allowed the UX to avoid a collision in 12-mph and 25-mph tests from IIHS. The UX is a Top Safety Pick on certain models with curve-adaptive headlights rated Acceptable by the agency.
