Driver Profiles: Franco Colapinto
Hello, this is part of a series where I focus on one driver on the current (as of Oct 2024) grid and give an overview over their career and driving styles. I will be going in championship points order. Enjoy!
Name: Franco Alejandro Colapinto
Age: 21
Nationality: Argentine
Years in F1: Less than 1 (Williams Sept 2024-Present)
Number: 43
WDCs: N/A
Driving Style: While not much has been seen from Colapinto in F1 yet, what we can gather is that he is an aggressive driver with strong defense, and solid overtaking skills. He has taken to the stress and pressure of F1 well, showing a cool head during races and defending well against F1 veterans like Sergio Perez. This shows a degree of adaptability, one that has been seen in his F2 career as well. A negative of his style is that his eagerness and aggression can lead to unnecessarily bold moves. In F2, for example, he is prone to receiving penalties. This eagerness can also cause inconsistency while racing.
History:
Colapinto came from a much more middle-class family than the average F1 driver. His carting career started at age 9, and he showed strong promise, winning the Argentine Championship in 2016 (Pre-Junior class) and 2018 (Sudam class), as well as the Buenos Aires Regional Championship in 2016 (Pre-Junior class) and 2017 (Junior class). Colapinto also won the gold medal at the 2018 Youth Summer Olympics. Due to this obvious talent his family sold their home in order to pay for Colapinto's debut in single-seaters.
(Colapinto during his karting days)
He debuted in car racing in 2018, participating in the final race of the F4 Spanish Championship. He had a stellar performance, and was able to sign a full-year contract for the 2019 season. That season he scored 11 victories, 13 podiums, and 14 pole positions. He took the title that year by winning the last three races of the season.
(Colapinto after winning Spanish F4_
Early 2020 he raced for the Toyota Racing Series, and finished 3rd in the standings, winning the rookie championship in the process. He also joined the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2020, and had a very positive year. He took two race wins that year and seven podiums, finish 3rd in the championship. This made him the highest placed rookie in the 2020 season, winning another rookie championship. 2021 saw him take part in the European and Asian Le Mans series, where he took 4th and 3rd respectively.
(Colapinto shortly before signing for Formula Renault)
His debut into F3 came in 2022, signing with Van Amersfoort Racing (a team that had once raced Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen) and came 7th in the standings, one of his worst championship results ever. He did have some positive results, with one sprint win and three podiums. He took part in F3 again for 2023, this time with a different team, and had a much more positive year, getting 4th in the standings by the end of the season.
(Colapinto after taking pole for Van Amersfoort)
Late 2023 it was announced that Colapinto would be graduated up to F2 for the 2024 season. He only completed the first half of the season, and gained one victory, before being promoted to the F1 Williams seat to replace Logan Sargent. So far he has shown positive results for a mega rookie in a midfield car, finishing in the points in his second race. As of right now he will stay with Williams for the rest of the season, but he has no seat for 2025.
Major Races (some F3 and F2 ones too):
F3: 2022 Imola Sprint: His maiden victory in F3, Colapinto capitalized on the tricky wet conditions and displayed strong composure and race craft.
F2: 2023 Silverstone Feature: He fought tough battles in the midfield to come. Although he did not place particularly high, he showed he could fight against competitive junior drivers and hold his own to stay in the points.
2024 Azerbaijan GP: Only his second race in F1, Colapinto delivered a stellar performance on a tricky track. He finished 8th (ahead of his veteran teammate) and showed that he could handle the pressure of a F1 race.
2024 Singapore GP: Although Colapinto finished outside the points, he had a standout performance. He fought hard in the midfield (memorably being complimented by Perez for his defense skills) and handled the physically toughest race on the calendar with grace.
Alright, that is all for Colapinto. Up next is Zhou Guanyu.
Cheers,
-B

ESG Ratings and the Future of Electric Passenger Cars
Sustainability for mobility has prompted electric passenger cars industry players to prioritize environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Heightened demand for decarbonization and the need to bring sustainability perspectives into management have encouraged incumbent companies to foster their ESG strategies. Climate change response has become global, suggesting an emphasis on the environment throughout the value chain, including design, manufacturing, procurement, logistics and disposal.
Premium automotive brands have shifted their attention toward sustainability to improve customer trust, boost compliance, enhance investor confidence and bolster brand reputation. A transition towards electric brands comes against the backdrop of soaring inflation, supply chain disruption and higher interest rates. In an unexpected turn of events, the exorbitant price of lithium propelled production costs for EVs; Russia’s Ukraine invasion and surging energy prices have had an overarching influence on the global economy.
AB Volvo Redefines Scope 3 Emissions for Consumer-Driven Culture
Although 2022 was a year full of challenges for automakers, 2023 has promised to provide compelling opportunities to navigate ESG strategies. Predominantly, AB Volvo has taken a giant stride to combat climate change—contemplating minimizing scope 1 & scope 2 emissions by 50% by 2030. The Swedish multinational company aims to cut scope 3 emissions by 40% per vehicle Km from trucks and buses, respectively, and 30% from construction equipment by 2030. The automotive giant has upped its efforts to do away with conventional energy sources and adopt renewable sources. During 2022, there was a 32% reduction in tailpipe emissions per average vehicle (vis-à-vis 2018 baseline). The company is gearing up to develop renewable electricity for vehicle charging, alluding strong demand for bio-based materials.

Toyota Prioritizes Social Sustainability
Workplace safety, reduction in accidents and diversity are shaping the future of transportation as automakers inject funds into state-of-the-art products and services. With the demand for personal vehicles soaring, sustainable development has become invaluable to creating a prosperous society. To illustrate, Toyota Australia has powered 7,883 solar panels to its Altona Toyota Parts Centre, which produces 2.5MW. In FY 2022, the auto giant incentivized Toyota and Lexus customers to recycle 1,954 hybrid batteries to foster battery recycling. The automotive brand donated USD 3.4 million to community partners working in sustainability, education, traffic safety, social justice and the environment. Moreover, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a Joint Venture between Toyota and Kirloskar, trained around 43,673 supplier members to boost environment and social performance.
Mercedes-Benz Ups Governance Stewardship
Decision-making bodies have exhibited concerted efforts toward transparency, ethics & compliance, robust corporate governance and board diversity to bolster their ESG performance. In 2021, Mercedes-Benz made a resource conservation policy to minimize the energy consumption per vehicle for cars by 43% and 25% for Vans by 2030. The Luxury vehicle company has introduced supply chain policies to allow purchasers to track material data with the help of blockchain technology. The automotive brand has propelled its diversity and equity portfolio to keep up with the Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality and reduced inequalities. As of December 2021, Mercedes-Benz had 22.5% of women in senior management positions, while the Board of Management had 3 women and 5 men.
The competitive scenario indicates that forward-looking companies could focus on organic and inorganic strategies to expand their global footprint. In doing so, well-established players will likely invest in technological advancements, innovations, product offerings, collaborations, R&D activities and mergers & acquisitions. The electric passenger cars market size stood at USD 120.81 billion in 2020 and will witness a healthy CAGR of 32.5% between 2021 and 2028. The outlook suggests that the sustainability and success of automakers could depend upon sound corporate governance, bullish environmental targets and social sustainability.

Driver Profiles: Liam Lawson
Hello, this is part of a series where I focus on one driver on the current (as of Oct 2024) grid and give an overview over their career and driving styles. I will be going in championship points order. Enjoy!
Name: Liam Lawson
Age: 22
Nationality: New Zealander
Years in F1: Less than 1 ( October 2024 VCARB, )
Number: 30
WDCs: N/A
Driving Style: Lawson is noted as a particularly adaptive driver. He seems to mesh well with many different cars, series, and styles. He is noted for his adaptability due to the fact that he regularly enters new series and shows good results quickly. Beyond that he is an assertive driver, but not as aggressive and reckless as some rookies can be. However, this lower amount of aggression meant he was less forceful in overtaking situations. Also his general lack of experience in an F1 car is a downside.
History:
Lawson was born to a relatively middle-class family, with a father who had a passion for Motorsport racing. This got Lawson involved from a very young age, and he started karting professionally at age 6. He had a very successful karting career, winning his first national title in 2012 when he won the Cadet class of the NZ CIK Championship. In 2013 he won his second national title in Junior Restricted and also finished runner-up in the NZ Schools Championship. 2014 he added two more national karting titles, winning Junior Restricted in both the NZ Sprint Championship and NZ Schools.
(Lawson during his karting days)
2015 he made his single-seater debut in the Formula First Manfield Winter Series taking a win and ten podiums to finish 2nd in the standings that year.overall. A few months later he took part in theNZ Formula First championship, taking a win and three podiums, getting 6th in the standings and winning Rookie of the Year. The following year, Lawson graduated to the NZ F1600 Championship Series where he dominated, claiming fourteen of the fifteen victories on offer to become the youngest champion in not just the series' history, but the youngest ever Formula Ford champion in world at the time.
(Lawson with his Formula Ford car)
In 2017, Lawson moved up to the Australian F4 championship, taking five wins to finish 2nd in his rookie season. 2018 Lawson remained at Formula 4 level, moving across to contest the ADAC Formula 4 championship with Van Amersfoort Racing (home to many future F1 drivers) and won three times, which saw him claim his second consecutive F4 runner up position.
(Lawson during his time at German F4)
Lawson took part in the Toyota Racing Series for the 2019 season and had a fantastic season. Lawson dominated on debut at Highlands, taking two races wins. He won three more times across the season along with multiple podium finished, and secured the title before the season was even over. He would take part in many other series over the next couple of years.
(Lawson after a race win in the 2019 Toyota Racing Series)
He competed in F3, but had middling results, is highest standings finish being 3rd in 2020. He moved on to F2 in 2021, where he had another middling season. He did achieve one win and three podiums, but finished 9th in the standings. He also competed in DTM during that year, having a very tight season and finishing 2nd in the standings. 2022 F2 was a much better year, as he had multiple race wins and podiums. He finished 3rd in the season, and had dropped from 2nd due to some unfortunate results in the latter half of the season.
(Lawson in his 2021 F2 car)
2023 Lawson took part in Super Formula, showing immediate pace and skill, and claimed three wins, multiple podiums, and many high-points finishes. He unfortunately finished 2nd in the standings, and did not return to Super Formula in 2024. During the 2023 year, Lawson also subbed in for an Injured Daniel Riccardo on the AlphaTauri team. He had held a connection to F1 for many years, joining the Red Bull Junior Team in 2019, and had served as their reserve driver for both AlphaTauri and Red Bull starting 2022. His time with AlphaTauri was decent. he did only score points once, but he also did finish higher than his teammate during this time.
(Lawson during the 2023 season with Alpha Tauri)
Once Riccardo returned, Lawson was kept as a reserve driver, a role he held until he was promoted up to the VCARB (AlphaTauri) seat for the remainder of the 2024 season, replacing Daniel Riccardo permanently. His first race as an official F1 driver is set to be the COTA GP. As of right now he does not have a seat for the 2025 season.
(Lawson with F1 driver Sergio Perez)
Major Races (including non F1):
2021 DTM Championship Norisring Finale - A race that showed off his great skill and pace, it was marred by a controversial scrape with Kevin van der Linde, his title rival. Mid-race, van der Linde made contact with Lawson and forced him into the gravel, which ultimately lost Lawson the title.
2021 F2 Monaco Sprint - He won this race with a stellar drive, showing his high handling skills and cool head around a very complex circuit. This helped him attract serious F1 attention.
2023 Singapore GP - His first F1 points every score, Lawson showed remarkable perseverance in one of the most physically demanding races of the season. Only his third race in F1, he showed great composure and fantastic race craft.
2023 Super Formula Fuji - His time in SF was all around positive, and at Fuji he dominated the track. He showcased great control in mixed conditions and showed he could handle a high-downforce car, important in F1.
Alright, that is the last one. I might do a series of profiles on some F1 legends (Senna, Prost, Hill, Lauda, Schumacher, Fangio, etc) so keep an eye out for that.
I hope you enjoyed the driver profiles. They will be updated as time goes on.
Cheers,
-B

Return to Normal? At Least Returned.
Chapter 1, Manila
Night 2, 4:30am. I wasn’t sure if I would write a blog this trip, but jetlag has reared its ugly head and wide awake with nothing better to do, here I go again.
Besides more or less syncing up with our stated plans to spend winters here, we’re in the Philippines a little earlier for a special reason – for me to experience Filipino Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. Christmas is celebrated here probably like no other place on earth, with the season officially starting in September. Decorations go up, holiday parties start, shopping season begins, gifts are exchanged. I’m not exaggerating, it starts in September. I’ve seen glimpses of it before, being here in September 2017 and November 2018 as we were building our house, but never here for the main event. Likewise, New Year’s is also quite the celebration, an excess of alcohol and fireworks, and not the safe and sane type. Christmas is still a couple days off, so I’ll report again after the festivities.
I’ll start this blog by going back a few weeks. Georgia actually came over just after Thanksgiving to meet with our Bay Area friends Mina, Juni, Teng, and a few of their family members who’ve been on an extended vacation. With the kind help of our Manila friends Noel and Michelle, they all enjoyed a trip to Balesin Island (a unique private island resort – our trips there have been reported in previous blogs).
At the same time our Graeagle friends Todd and Kathleen traveled to Costa Rica for their own fun and warm adventure. They are Lizzie’s humans; Lizzie is Max’s sister and BFF. I stayed at home with both of the pups whose purpose was to keep me busy. Below, Max photobombs Lizzie’s serious portrait.
In the first 10 days of my dog-sitting we had 3 separate snowstorms with snow piling up over 2 feet. Nothing but good times for the dogs though, they’ll chase each other or a ball all day long in the snow, the deeper the better. They never seem to get either tired or cold, it’s me who does and I’m the spoil sport who always calls them back in to warm up.
Lizzie went back to her humans when they returned last week, leaving Max and I as bachelors for a few days. About that time it turned cold; when I got up the morning before heading here it was 5°F (-15°C). Max didn’t care but it definitely got me thinking about the nice warm weather in the Philippines!
My trip here was uneventful but longer than usual – a 6:00 am flight from Reno to SFO, then SFO to Seoul, and finally Seoul to Manila. Everything was on time until the last flight which was delayed a few hours, giving me a travel time (Reno airport shuttle to Dolly’s house in Manila) of about 29 hours. I slept really well the first night here but old jetlag is always lurking and eventually catches up with you.
Before you worry about Max, he’s staying with Lizzie, Todd, and Kathleen until early January, when Georgia’s sister Dignah will come stay at our house and entertain Max until we return in May.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s adventures continued. Besides the fun type in Balesin, she also ran into some bad adventure. Or to be more accurate, some bad adventure ran into her. After returning from Balesin she was driving back to her mom’s house and while stopped waiting for traffic to clear so she could make a right turn, a delivery truck on her left decided to squeeze in front of her. It was a bit too tight of a squeeze and despite Georgia’s energetic honking the side of the truck struck and removed much of the front end of our car. Georgia was rattled of course, but thankfully unhurt. To make it all worse, she then waited hours for the police inspector to arrive, and after that had to go to the police station to file a report. To top it off, it was raining. What a way to ruin your day!
We’re very lucky that Georgia’s sister Divine (Vinee) and her husband Alvin who live in Hong Kong have a few cars stationed over here. They’ve generously lent us a Toyota Previa van for as long as we need it. Since I still hadn’t arrived, poor Georgia had to deal with it all – police, insurance, towing, finding a body shop, etc. The car’s now sitting in a repair shop not too far from Dolly’s house. We’ll see how this turns out.
To wrap this up on a positive note, Georgia reports all is well at our house in Kawayan Cove. No disasters such as those which greeted us on our last trip; she’s very pleased with the way our new caretakers have maintained both house and garden. I’m looking forward to getting there – our plan is to stay here through Christmas day and then go to KC for the week, returning to Manila for New Years.
Finally, I want to wish every one of you a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!

Volkswagen's New ID Buzz EV Van Already Has a Slide-In Camper Unit
New Post has been published on https://medianwire.com/volkswagens-new-id-buzz-ev-van-already-has-a-slide-in-camper-unit/
Volkswagen's New ID Buzz EV Van Already Has a Slide-In Camper Unit
Ququq is based in Germany and actually makes five different versions of its camperbox modules for many types of European SUVs and vans, as well as some Japanese and American makes. These modules include a camper bed, kitchen, and storage in a single, typically slide-in unit that give owners a place to cook—including a gas stove—and to sleep while camping without breaking the bank with a full camper conversion.
Essentially a box containing the kitchen items forms the basis for a 3.9-inch-thick foam folding mattress that is between 43.3 and 52.75 inches wide depending on which version you get and folds out to 76.77 inches long when fully deployed. The best part is that you don’t need to rip out the vehicle’s rear interior to make it work. If you have a vehicle that has a third row seat (all U.S.-spec ID Buzzes will), it needs to be able to fold flat or be removed, but the second row doesn’t have to. For vehicles that have fold flat or removable second row seats, the bed’s forward end can be supported by chains or straps attached to either the grab handles or the upper seat belt anchors, or by its integrated folding legs on the bed. For vehicles with non-removable, but foldable second row seats that don’t fold completely flat with the cargo floor, you can use foam blocks to support the forward section on the folded-flat seat backs. Using those two handles on each side of the box, a set of lashing straps hold the box in place inside the vehicle while a smaller strap holds the folded bed down while in transit.
When everything is set up, you have a fully capable camper with a cooking stove; a place to store food, water and other items; and a small table to work with that pop out from below the bed.
The water storage is made for those rectangular water jugs with an integrated tap, and the bin below it can hold a small container to let you clean your dishes and silverware. The cooking stove is on a slide-out cabinet that has a wind protector and another place to store those dishes, cookware, and silverware. Push everything back in when you’re finished cooking, and the ID Buzz is good to go on an electric excursion without having to break down an extensive camp.
Done camping generally for a time, or need to use either the cargo hold or those third-row seats? You and a friend can remove the 140- to 195-pound assembly (depending on which version you get, but the BusBox is typically the heaviest of Ququq’s camping modules) out of your vehicle and store it away until you’re ready to use it again.
Ququq has already shown off the BusBox 4, which is made specifically for the upcoming ID Buzz, but that’s not the only version that Ququq has. These BusBoxes are made to work with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Metris vans, the Ram ProMaster, and the Ford Transit for European vans built for sale here in the U.S. They also offer the Flat Box camping modules for the Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4, the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica, Lexus GX, and Honda Odyssey; the Kombi Box for the Ford Transit Connect; the D Box for the Defender 110 up until 2018; and the G Box for the 1979-2018 Mercedes G-Class, but only for the long-wheelbase version. Despite being built in Germany, these modules are sold in the U.S. by RRE, a company in Nevada that specializes in Overland Vehicle and Conversion Van parts and accessories.
While we know that there are many DIY conversions out there that might do this same basic task for very little cash using wood, it looks like the Ququq camper modules are a perfect solution for those who who just want a plug-and-play way to take their van camping. The modules start at $3,990 while the BusBox tops out at $4,490 for the version 2 that includes a pedestal to allow the bed to be fully folded while the rear seats are folded down.
We asked VW if the BusBox for the ID Buzz would be available at U.S. dealerships and for how much, but unfortunately, it hasn’t disclosed the ifs or whens by saying, “We are looking at offering a kitchen/bed module in our market and looking to leverage an established manufacturer. However, it’s too soon to say what the final features, pricing or sales channels would be.” In the meantime, we can’t wait to see if the classic Westfalia pop-top treatment makes a comeback for the ID Buzz. But such a creation would surely cost silly money, which is all the more reason to get excited for the Ququq BusBox.

lesbian mom
My sister told me I dress like a lesbian mom. With no offense meant towards lesbian mothers because as Chloe put it- if I was a lesbian mom, my style would be closer to cool. But because up to this point in life I have been straight and childless, I’m just an appropriator. Which I definitely don’t want to be by the way, but I'm an American and blind appropriation is the American way. Working on it. I’m in the kitchen in Cedar Falls finding all my last sporadic, traveled with items to shove in my XL backpack* by the time Chloe brings her new opinion up to her roommates, my family. “Cathy, don’t you think Maddie looks like a lesbian mom?” “a what? A lesbian? I didn’t hear you” ...and dad’s reaction: “oh.. did you get a surrogate then?” * (United and Frontier front like they will be strict about charging you based on the sizes of your luggage, but they won't be. Apparently my size of backpack does not count as a personal item (free) but instead a carry-on (not free). It's a glutinous excuse for a backpack. However, they don’t say shit to you when you show up on the day of your flight. In the words of my friend Grace: If it's on your back and not on wheels, you're fine. I have had to repack a backpack once, throwing on a sweatshirt and carrying socks in my hand to make it through. But you know what that was? Free. And Fyi- U.S. airlines alone made 5.1 billion bucks in extra baggage fees in 2018. Don't contribute to that mess.) * But anyways, to come to the defense of lesbian moms, I think I dress with the best intention. I don’t think I have bad taste, but I can have bad execution. It's not entirely my fault though, as I feel bigger boobs make a lot of outfits merge towards mother. Tops are always an issue because you have the possibility of looking tenty, and opposite that- the issue of looking too tucked in. It can make the attempted effortlessness come off as starchy. I also straddle this line of wannabe skater and NOT wannabe school teacher, meaning I would love to come across as someone who deserves to wear Vans and less like someone who is reading to your child over snack time. That one is harder to explain, but has a lot to do with stripes. I don't bother running all of this past her, but I told Chloe that if I was flat-chested she wouldn’t be saying this. She didn’t argue but offered to help pay for my reduction. My dad and I get in the car after I make an everything bagel with some onion flavored cream cheese. A Thomas brand bagel, of course. Because it’s the cushiest and you can find them everywhere. We love a processed carb. He drives me to the airport in his new-but-used Toyota Highlander, which doesn’t reek of cigs like his previous whip. He only likes this new car because it has a cassette player, but the low mileage is a plus. I just want to say that the Cedar Rapids airport is low entertainment. It’s a trade-off because you are through security in seconds, but you have to do things like chase after people to hand them their ID’s they left on the counter to help the employees out because we’re Iowa nice and when in the homeland you have to act right. And people wear really ugly printed leggings and foul footwear. Lots of camo and lots of Hawkeye logos, which I do not identify with despite it being my alma mater. I was caught in a very vulnerable spot with my thick and tall Doc Marten's, (not a good airport shoe but a good everyday shoe so what can you do) hunched over the ‘Get Your Shit Back Together Very Quickly Bench’ that comes after security, when I see this rushed looking, young nerd man in a long black trench coat. He LOUDLY and SO abruptly asks this similarly aged gal he was coming up behind whether her hair was red or blonde. She had long red hair with dyed blonde ends. She said “red?” and he says nothing but “HUMPH” without breaking speed at all. Why did he need to know that and also why could he not see that her hair was both colors? And if he cared so much to know, then why did he not respond? Did he think this was considered to be hitting on her?? Because practically yelling at her to inquire about her appearance is not cutting it. I wish for his sake I could at least call him a boomer but he didn't meet the age requirement. Whatever. She looked around for confirmation that what had just happened to her was so weird, which of course I gave to her by saying: “That was so weird.” The sole restaurant by the gates has Blue Moon so that’s redeeming. But it’s in a tin can which is not so good. I used to prefer a draft pour with an orange slice but I am partial to a cold bottle now, plain- no orange. It’s more consistent this way, as some places don’t clean their draft lines regularly and it shows. I met an icon on my flight today. I, of course, was assigned my usual middle seat as I am certain I paid the littlest amount of airfare out of everyone on the plane. Deals only. But as I step up to my row and make that apologetic eye contact with the dude who is about to have to move and let me assume my usual middle spot, the guy asks me if I want to switch spots with his son- WHO HAS AN AISLE SEAT. YEAH SIR, I DO. And this is how I was seated next to the only stranger I’ve had an extended conversation with on an airplane, ever. At least to the point where I was sure I wanted to be buddies with her. She was not stoked on the middle seat, but it’s the one she had in our row. The icon is named Erin and she said: “I’ve been ignoring people on planes for 20 years but you seem like an absolute riot.” I realized I also tend to spend a lot of time ignoring people on airplanes. I actually spend more time trying not to bother the people around me, aka holding urine in until I am nearly bursting because the awkward fumbling out of my usual middle seat is too much. I did, however, have slight banter with a guy sitting next to me on the way into Iowa from Denver on this same trip. All he wanted to say to me was that he had just been skiing in Vail or something. People love being able to say sentences like this, by the way. "Skiing in Vail". It's supposed to impress whoever they tell. Ok. But later on, he and I would exchange terrified eyes as we watched this awful moment unfold after an older fellow in the row across from us ignored all social rules and played his voicemails on full blast, speaker volume, for about 10 minutes. A young gentleman near us let him know that “We can all hear that!” which I would have never said but was also thinking. Obviously. The Voicemail Blarer says “Oh sorry” calmly but is very caught off guard. I thought- wow. That went well. But the Voicemail Blarer takes all of 30 seconds to stew before erupting. He belly yells that he is a “WAR VETERAN AND THAT IS WHY I CANNOT HEAR OUT OF THIS EAR WHICH IS WHY MY PHONE IS ON SPEAKER AND BY THE WAY IM ON THIS FLIGHT BECAUSE MY MOM JUST DIED AND I AM FLYING BACK TO IOWA FOR THE FUNERAL. PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE AHHHHHHHHH KDFKSJDFLKJDFLJSDF”... I feel like the percentage of people flying to Iowa for funerals is probably a decent chunk. Either you're visiting your family or someone died. Just speculating. ANyways. The Mourning Vet Voicemail Blarer said some pretty harsh remarks towards the Complainer that I can’t remember because I was so nervous as a witness to this that my adrenaline was working overtime to suppress. I remember being proud of The Complainer as he kept very level and only said a couple words to defend himself followed by: “I’m sorry you’re going through that man but we don’t all need to hear your voicemails.” I see both sides of this interaction. On the younger Complainer dude’s side, it’s not socially courteous for the vet to be playing his voicemails out loud. Especially for ten minutes. I mean Larry David would have lost it. On the other hand, no one was insulting his status as a vet or poking fun at his late mother, but he has obviously been through more life and more challenges than I and plus he’s grieving. I don’t know. I didn’t mind the voicemails THAT much. Back to today- Erin is the second stranger I’ve met who inspired me this month. Technically this year, and technically this decade, too. Happy 2020. From what I saw, she’s a kick-ass, take no shit, lay it all on the table kind of individual. She had a natural openness about her and radiated warmness but is the type to probably gaurd herself just enough. The kind of person who you would hate to see sad. Born in cedar rapids, went to Iowa for Journalism, got her masters at Syracuse. Has lived all over- New York, London, LA (I think she said). Will not donate to her old sorority, Chi O, because she can’t affiliate with that anymore because it’s lame. But she’s loyal enough to one of her sorority besties to fly to Denver and sit with her while she undergoes a chemo treatment. She asks me about work and I say I have enough side hustles to equate to having a real job. She tells me I need a podcast and says I must have been told this before. I haven’t. But If I had one, I would have her guest star immedieately. She oozes content. Apparently, there’s such a thing as coaching people on how to talk on camera because this is her job. It can be split up into different categories based on the size of the screen. Phone, computer, TV, etc. She kept saying things about “inches”. I thought this was wildly specific, exactly the sort of job you wouldn’t think about until you thought about it. Niche. Hopefully future me is doing something niche right now. But only if I'm enjoying it. She also mentioned some clients she has that I should speak to so I can learn how to travel the world for free. I could have clung to her and never let go after she said this, as that would make my life and her encouragement inspired me. Before this though, we agree I need a credit card that rewards with airline miles instead of cashback. It’s third up on my “to-do now” list- which is different than my “to-do” list becasue that one is for things like making dentist appointments. For the things that should not be put off but can and will be. Until they can't. She asks what my sign is, which is Sagittarius. She said of course. She’s a Virgo. I have no clue what this means. People ask me this sort of thing a lot now though so I need to read up. This guy I met recently who works at Wax Trax Records told me not only extensively about my sign but about my rising moon and one other part of it that I can’t remember. Or is it your rising sign and moon sign as separates? Idk. He told me that every girl he knows has an ex-boyfriend who is a Pisces. True. Erin also told me she’s on some board in Iowa City that is currently discussing the ped mall. I had a lot to say about THAT, as I feel the ped mall has turned into wasted space other than maybe one and a half shops. She agrees. It’s not being utilized like it should be, we think. Too many frat bars. Apparently, her family owns the Bluebird cafes or used to, and I said "ooooooooh!" but that I could never get a seat in the Iowa City location because every hungover kid within a ten mile radius is trying to eat there every Saturday and Sunday morning. I also thought of the time they burned my friend Madison Wood’s toast and she sent it back. I didn’t tell her this though. I like Bluebird. And I hate when people at my table complain about the food. She tells me I'm too good to write for random freelances, which I have dipped my toes into doing. Pays like shit. I agree and listen to her tell me about someone she met when she was just one year sober (she is now ten years along) who pushed her to take charge of her own point of view. It sounded to me like she was inspired to trust and invest in herself. I liked that. As if I needed another excuse to stay out of corporate America. Right before she fell into meditation and soon to be sleep, Erin comments on my middle part and my “nice natural eyebrows” which is funny because I helped the brows out right before going through security. (By helped out, I mean makeup-ed. In the airport bathroom, too far away from the mirror, two different pencils- one chubby for careless shading and one skinnier to help the endpoints of my brow that is otherwise dead.) On the topic of my appearance, I tell her that my sister had just told me that I dress like a lesbian mother. She said she loves my sister.
