I am very seriously trying to buy a new (to me) car.
I need a bigger car to fit crates in since that will allow me to transport more dogs for boarding. I have opted to go the used route for a number of reasons.
After much research, input from some super helpful dogblr folks as well as coworkers, and some dragging my feet - I'm ready. I'm looking to buy a 2018 Toyota RAV4 XLE.
I found one being sold at a fair price given the low mileage and went to see it last Saturday. It was a trade in at a BMW dealership. When they brought it out I was a little taken back because it's pretty dinged up. Not to the point of hindering functionally but there are dents and scrapes on every panel and fixing it would $1000 in body work easily, if not more.
Honestly, I don't give a shit about cosmetics. This car is for hauling dogs around. But it would be silly to pretend it doesn't change the value of the car.
I noticed that the front tires were different from the rear tires and asked about it. Sales dude tells me they replaced the front ones because the originals were dry rotted. I asked if the mechanic measured the new vs the old because AWD can be sensitive and different widths can fuck it up. Sales dude tells yes, it's all on paper. Cool.
I take it for a test drive and notice the brakes are a little rough. I ask if the brake pads were inspected to see how worn they are. Sales dude assures me yes, the car passed inspection and they're fine. Am told, again, it's all on paper.
Once we're back at the dealership I ask him to please get me the info on the tires and brakes cause I'm ready to make a deal and buy the car. Sales dude asks for my price and I tell him my offer is contingent on the information so please get it. Guy comes back with a manager and oops, they don't actually have that info.
Which honestly really pissed me off. You lied to my face and what? Didn't think you'd get caught not having the very specific information I'm asking for? I don't know why I expected slightly less car sales bullshit from a higher end dealership but the jokes on me.
I leave with the agreement that on Monday (today) they'll have the mechanic get the info and call me promptly at X time. An hour and a half later, I ended up leaving them a voicemail.
Finally got on the phone with them, tires are fine but the brake pads are just this side of passing and I'll need to change them fairly quickly. Fine. Given the body work and brakes, not to mention all the fluid changes I'll need to do, I put in my offer - a little less than $1000 off listed price. This puts the car at just my side of a good deal rather than fair, but honestly not by much.
They eventually accept my offer. Awesome. I am ready to pay over the phone. No. They won't take the payment over the phone or even a deposit. I have to come buy it in person.
In an ideal world, I'd go Thursday morning and get it done before work since that's my late day. But I'm concerned about the time wasting tactics dealerships use to try to get people to "upgrade" packages. I am trialing Friday and Saturday.
That leaves my only actual day with time to spare next Monday. During the in between they will not hold the car for me or pull it from their listings.
It so fucking frustrating that a high end, fancy ass BMW dealership is giving me the run around for a busted up six year old Toyota that I am willing to pay for right now!
So, fingers crossed it's still there next week and I'm able to buy it. If not, oh well I guess. There's really not anything else I can do at this point. It's just annoying because if they had the information they said they did I'd have bought the car right then.
Anyway, let this be your reminder to not take car sales folks word for anything and make them show you on paper. They will lie right to your face and blame you for holding up the sale.
Hello! List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you! Get to know your mutuals and followers :D
Hi, @paperclipbean! 🥂
Thank you for the ask!! 💚
What are five things that make this spicy ghost actual hobbit happy?
Let’s gooo!
1. First and foremost, my dogs! They can be wildly irritating, a bit on the mischievous side and even get into trouble, but at the end of the day, I’m so glad to have them in my life.
2. My lovely snake plant Crowley. He’s so smol and cute, and I love him so much. I do not have a green thumb, but I am determined to become a good plant mom for him.
3. Something something about a Queen song something something. I’m in love with my car. He is a red 2018 Toyota RAV4 LE named The Crimson Beast. He also occasionally goes by Big Red. I recently splurged and purchased stunning black and red interior — leather seat covers, rubber floor mats and a steering wheel cover.
4. I am passionate about my job. I am a kennel technician responsible for the care and wellbeing of police and military canines. Some are sweet and gentle, others are like sour patch kids and others are completely bonkers and make my job difficult, but at the end of the day, police dog or not, they are still just dogs, and I love all of them.
5. I’m cheating and naming a few of my favorite interests, shhh. Witchy things, celestial stuff, thunderstorms in the dark, and food.
I’m supposed to put this in the ask boxes of ten people, but I’m going to cheat again and bend the rules a bit.
Alexander Martinez, Florida inmate F81722, born 2001, incarceration intake November 2022 at age 20, scheduled for release January 2024
Negligent Manslaughter with a Vehicle, DUI resulting in serious Bodily Injury
In February 2020, the son of a high-ranking Miami firefighter was charged with the traffic crash that killed a teenager and severely injured a member of his father’s own department. Alexander Martinez, 18, was booked into a Miami-Dade jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. He is the son of Miami Fire-Rescue Capt. Eduardo Martinez, who oversees emergency medical services for the department.
At the time the younger Martinez was allowed to post bond and await trial while free. The tragic chain of events started on May 18, 2018, as Miami firefighters rushed to the side of Interstate 95 just south of Northwest 62nd Street.
As firefighters worked to extricate the person, a gray 2015 Toyota Rav4 was driving north, lost control, hit a concrete wall and sideswiped the firetruck parked on the side of the Interstate. The Toyota, state troopers said, was driven by Martinez. It was traveling at 83.3 mph when it crashed, according to an arrest warrant. Killed in the crash was 16-year-old James Villa, a student at Christopher Columbus High School. He was a passenger in the Toyota.
Severely injured in the crash was firefighter Javier Corrales, who was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He spent several days in the hospital before he was released. Corrales suffered a skull fracture and a fractured spine, among other injuries. Another firefighter was also injured. The other passengers in the Toyota were hospitalized, as were the two people from the stranded car that was on the side of Interstate 95. Martinez’s cellphone, which featured a map and directions to the home of one of his passengers, was discovered on the driver’s side seat, according to an arrest warrant. In the hospital, Martinez admitted he’d been drinking that night — but insisted he was not driving at the time of the crash, troopers said. Toxicology tests on his blood revealed he had a blood alcohol content level of .09, just over the legal limit for someone over the age of 21. Martinez, however, was only 17 at the time of the crash and was not supposed to be drinking alcohol, troopers said. The other passengers, however, told investigators that Martinez was behind the wheel of the Toyota at the time of the crash.
Investigators said it took more than 18 months to "over come some hurdles" to develop the case to the point that the an indictment could be handed down.
The younger Martinez pleased guilty and was sentenced in October 2022, two and one-half years after the accident. Martinez was sentenced to three years.
have seen the "you really bought a tesla?" post a couple times now and it's another one of those things that I think people often have misconceptions about
1. the cheapest Tesla (model 3) was the world's bestselling electric car from 2018 to 2020, when it was ousted by the 2nd-cheapest Tesla (model Y). the model Y was the single best selling car in the world in the first quarter of 2023. they are very popular.
2. the cheapest Tesla is $40,240 new. with the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles, a price tag of $32,740 puts it on par with the Honda Odyssey minivan's base price or with slightly nicer trims of SUVs like the Subaru Outback or Toyota RAV4, and only about $100 more than a new Prius Prime. People in California may also qualify for an additional $2000-$5000 rebate for buying one, bringing the price down to $27,740 - just $1000 more than a new Toyota Camry.
3. the concerns about safety are often weighted against an incorrect baseline - so far, current data show that electric vehicles aren't more likely to catch fire in an accident than gas vehicles and are actually less likely to do so (but this is difficult to get solid data on. there's a bunch of articles reporting on a study by an insurance company showing a massive reduction in fire risk but the underlying data are highly suspicious).
4. the big point of distrust that I think is grounded: recalls. some of the 22 (22!) model 3 recalls are ~trivial, like "the driver's side sun visor may be missing the airbag warning sticker", but some are more serious, like "the airbags might not be correctly connected to the car." it seems like a lot of the issues have been addressed on the current (2023-2027) line, but the recurring problems with things ranging from minor software issues to pretty serious function issues are good cause for concern. None of the ones I've read about seem as severe as Toyota's "oops the accelerator gets stuck and your car can't stop moving forward" recall or Ford's "oops the engine explodes" recalls [plural], and even the worst ones are on par with things we've seen before especially from US automakers (glaring at Ford, GM, and Ford again). Ford and GM are both guilty of continuing to use known bad parts for >5 years with (in one case) thousands of fires and (in another) over a hundred deaths. moreover, GM's Bolt EV is under a 100% recall for the 2017-2022 model years for high fire risk and Ford recalled over 100,000 hybrids for fire risk - so is Tesla worse than GM or Ford? I don't know if I'd say that, but I'd really want a car I buy to live up to a higher standard.
in short, the most popular teslas by a huge margin are the two most affordable ones, which are fairly accessible to consumers (especially in California). the risk of a tesla exploding or catching on fire is not, as far as I can tell, higher than other cars (and it appears to be less likely per million miles traveled than some other EVs on the market). teslas still have a bunch of quality issues, and they still have some stupid design choices - but you can easily buy a shittier car for a lot more money, particularly an American-made one.
Car sales continue their slow decline in the U.S. in 2017, although that same year the Camry is all new (and labeled a 2018 model). America's best-selling car ranks seventh in 2018 sales overall when trucks and SUVs are factored in. Other Camry sales-beaters include the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Ford F-150. In 2020, sales took a 13 percent drop, thanks to the global pandemic that put the world in park. Camry sales in 2021 were a better showing. With a total of 313,795 units of the family sedan sold in the U.S., the Camry took the sixth spot in overall sales. Despite Camry sales falling below the 300,000-unit mark in 2022, the Toyota sedan actually moved up to the fifth spot in overall sales for the year, with trucks such as the Ford F-series, Chevrolet Silverado, and Ram line of full-size trucks taking the top three spots. Toyota's RAV4 SUV, meanwhile, claimed the fourth spot with a total of 399,941 units sold in 2022.
