We’ll start with what’s mainly a list of the quotes then we’ll interpret their purpose. Some citations may not feel that philosophical but as they can be interpreted the same way, they were included here nonetheless.

BTS introduced us to philosophy, and then to psychology, quite progressively. As it started in the background, it’s hard to be sure whether I caught them all or not but the earliest occurrence I have is in “Boy In Luv” Japanese version MV:

“One original thought is worth a thousand mindless quotings, Diogenes”

Despite the signature, it seems this quote is not from Diogenes himself but was rather attributed to him by William Safire in a New York Times article from the 7 April 1996 and titled “ON LANGUAGE; Worth a Thousand Words” - the article itself is explaining the real origin of some expressions. It was later used by Banksy for one of his works - and it’s probably this one that inspired Big Hit’s artistic directors.

It’s funny to start a post about philosophical references with a fake quote. Let’s say it’s a reminder to be careful with what you say and to not blindly believe what you read.

The sentence was written on the blackboard. You can also find a verse from the Bible’s proverbs not too far away:

“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

Now let’s be honest, it’s impossible to read these in the MV (I found them thanks to a making-of video). As for their link with “Boy In Luv” (lyrics of the Japanese version here), it seems hard to establish. “Boy In Luv” tells the story of a boy struggling to confess his love for a girl and waiting eagerly for an answer. An overinterpretation of the quotes could be that the boy needs to find how to confess by himself (in opposition to the “Dad how did you confess your love to mom?” from the lyrics) and that a gesture would mean more than a verbal confession, or that he must choose his words wisely to not lose his chance with the girl.

The next ones are more known in the fandom since they appeared during The Most Beautiful Moment in Life. It’s words related to the concept of the series, namely the brevity of life, the death of innocence and childhood, and the cruelty of the world:

“Paradise is where I am” - Voltaire in “Le Mondain”

“Dedicated to all the boys who have lived in this painful world”

“Too fast to live too young to die”

“Without soul goal and **** We are nothin but a mannequin”

"You must live on"

“YOLO” / “you only live once”

“Youth is never coming back”

“Pain past is pleasure”

There’s also a series of Latin citations that appeared in “RUN” Japanese version:

“Carpe Diem” (Seize the day) “Dum Spiro Spero” (While I breath I hope) “Memento mori” (Remember that you have to die) “Pro Memoria” (For memory) “res, non verba” (Facts instead of words) “Viva” (Alive/Living or Long live…!)

Some of those expressions made their comeback during the WINGS series, along with new ones:

“Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können” (One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.)

A citation from Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. And:

“You oldest fears are the worst ones”

“Expiring for love is beautiful but stupid”

“Fear is the most elegant weapon Your hands are never messy Threatning bodily is rude” (original typo)

Different sentences from Jenny Holzer.

These citations are once again fitting with the concepts for WINGS and The Wings Tour, that is to say, temptation and the fear of becoming an adult.

For details about where all those can be found in BTS’ works and their origins, I’ll let you refer to the glossary. Most of them don’t have a real author and some may even have been created by the artistic direction team.

Agust D’s album cover had citations over Suga’s face:

“You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin’ fingers and say. ‘That’s the bad guy’.” said by Tony Montana (Robert de Niro), the main character in Brian de Palma’s movie Scarface.

“Life is a daily oscillation between revolt and submission” by Henri Frederic Amiel, a Swiss philosopher.

“Life is ecstasy”

“Every man dies, but not every man lives.” pronounced by William Wallace (Mel Gibson) in the movie Braveheart.

Again they go with the theme of the mixtape.

We even got a surprise during the 2017/2018 ceremonies. A citation from Gilles Deleuze could be seen in the background during the “Mic Drop” performance at the 2018 Seoul Music Awards. There was also a lobster during the Golden Disc that connects with it. I’ll let you refer to the glossary for details but here’s the quote, from A Thousand Plateaus:

“Nor can the status of social formations be analyzed by throwing some signifier into the base, or vice versa, or a bit of phallus or castration into political economy, or a bit of economics or politics into psychoanalysis. There is a third problem. It is difficult to elucidate the system of the strata without seeming to introduce a kind of cosmic or even spiritual evolution from one to the other, as if they were arranged in stages and ascended degrees of perfection.”

I won’t pretend I understand everything but I still feel it’s the less pertinent quote until now. It’s an analysis of the world on a binary base which doesn’t really connect with the boys’ success that’s celebrated in “Mic Drop”.

The last quotes up to this day are in Persona’s comeback trailer. They’re from Carl Jung, the psychologist who inspired the series:

I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.

The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul, which opens up to that primeval cosmic night that was the soul long before there was the conscious ego.

As expected, they relate to the lyrics of “Intro: Persona” that wonder about one’s own identity and the dream theme linked to the album.

Even though they are mostly related to the concept of the series, we can wonder whether these words are intended to be seen by fans or just serve as a Lorem Ipsum to fill the background. Indeed, you’ll need to pause the videos to read most of them and sometimes even more effort will be needed - for example, Holzer’s quotes are written backward when they appear behind Jungkook.

(This also applies to most of the literature references, they’re relevant for the concept but quite hard to catch.)

It’s like background noise. But a background noise that you can take the time to listen to in order to understand the whole concept even better. There’s one thing however that seems recurrent between those quotes and it’s their negativity. Of course, most of BTS’ concepts are dark so it’s fitting but they also usually have their bit of hope: youth is painful but it’s the most beautiful moment in life. Or then again, we can overinterpret and consider that while the world is dark, it’s the boys themselves who bring hopefulness.

In the lyrics

Obviously, all of BTS’ lyrics are quite philosophical, be it when they question their feelings, the meaning of life or the way society works. And I’m not even talking about the puns.

One notable line though is in RM’s “God Rap” when he explicitly talks about Buddhism, as explained by Muish here:

Foolish believers, you can become a god as well

It references the fact anyone reaching enlightenment can become a godly being.

The next ones appear in the Love Yourself series. First, we have “Magic Shop” (Muish’s rambling), a song dedicated to ARMY and written by Jungkook. The concept of the magic shop is detailed below. Here, it’s like an IRL version. The fear they exchanged is the hate they received before and the positive attitude they gained is ARMY. And they wish us the same:

You gave me the best of me So you’ll give you the best of you

Since the magic shop is a mental exercise, you’ll find it in your heart.

There’s also something in “134340” and “Answer: Love Myself”. Their lyrics can be connected to what Jung defined as a complex: a constellation of elements that when they’re activated can influence our will (more details can be found here). Those elements are usually past trauma or similar events.

So when they say in “Answer: Love Myself”:

Under your mask When even the scars left from my mistakes Are all my constellations

The constellations that emerged from mistakes can be seen as a complex.

As for “134340″ (lyrics), the whole song can be interpreted as a rejected complex. “134340″ is initially about Pluto not being considered as a planet anymore and thus feeling lonely. It’s similar to what happens to complexes. Normally they’re in the unconscious but once they’re activated, they can reach the consciousness, like the sun in the lyrics:

At one time, belonging to the sun’s world

But once the ego has dealt with the complex, it is sent back into the unconscious, where it just float around aimlessly like Pluto:

All I’m doing is circling around (Beyond the fog, I watch over the you who is still smiling Without you and without meaning, the reality of my irregular orbit) All I’m doing is spinning around aimlessly (Pluto in the darkness with a number that’s difficult for you to remember But even then, I’d continue to circle around your surroundings, damn)

To relate to the concept of Tear, let’s add the fact that complexes have personalities. They’re usually weaker than the personality of the ego (which is our personality; in the case they’re as strong, we observe multiple personalities disorders).

The whole concept of Tear is faking yourself to the point it’s unbearably painful. It’s like the boy rejected his own personality to the point it became a complex instead of his own ego and now it’s exiled in his subconscious. Luckily, he will accept it in Love Yourself 結 Answer. Concerning the reason why such a thing would happen, we have to remember the ego is directly under the influence of the persona (so how we behave in society). So to fit in the world, the ego changed itself.

Concepts based on philosophy/psychology

Until now, it’s safe to assume all the quotes in the videos were decisions from the artistic team only. It all changed with the Love Yourself series.

Not only its main reference is The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm, but the whole series is constructed as a reflection based on the 起承轉結 structure and it also references the magic shop technique. Philosophy is central in this concept and not only the artistic directors but also Bang PD and the boys are participating in developing it.

The Art of Loving explains love is like an art and you must work on it to develop it. Love has several forms, including self-love, but true love is rare nowadays. People tend to compensate for the lack of love with consumerism.

The Chinese structure has an introduction, two parts considering the subject from two different points of view and a conclusion.

The magic shop refers to a psychodramatic scene performed during therapy by the patients and the therapist. In the magic shop, it’s possible to exchange whatever you want against a certain price. However, the real strength of this technique is in the bargain preceding the exchange. The shopkeeper (either the therapist or another patient) will question the reasons motivating the exchange and through their answers, the patient often realizes their initial wish was hiding another desire they hadn’t identified. You can refer to this paper by Professor Earl Koile for examples.

In Love Yourself, Euphoria shows that the introduction is actually The Most Beautiful Moment in Life. It’s the initial situation. As we saw in The universal coming-of-age story, the boys struggled with accepting the outside world and still had to find how to be happy.

The two development parts of the reasoning are the bargain inside the magic shop - note that all the what-if considered during this bargain also exist in the BU thanks to the time travel.

The exchange the boys want to make is revealed in ”FAKE LOVE” first teaser:

'Magic Shop' is a psychodramatic technique that exchanges fear for a positive attitude.

We also see in the video that what they understand by fear is their traumatic past and that “a positive attitude” is being with a girl (several interpretations can be made as to what the girls represent).

The bargain begins in Her and the boys explain how being with a girl will bring them happiness because it’s destiny (see notably “Serendipity”’s and “DNA”’s lyrics).

The teaser revealed during the 2017 KBS Gayo Daechukje can be considered as the shopkeeper’ answer:

“The magical time is coming. Come to the Magic Shop. Now, take off your mask and open your eyes.”

The boys are asked to take off the mask “destiny” had put on them, the one that makes them smile because they’re with a girl.

We see the result in Tear. They’ve been denaturing themselves to the point they literally ask “who are you?” in “FAKE LOVE”. Being with a girl actually doesn’t bring them happiness and they’re just forcing themselves to fit the situation “because it’s destiny”.

The conclusion happens when the boys realize what they really want is not “a positive attitude” as decided by some abstract authority but to be happy by themselves and for themselves. Thus “Answer: Love Myself”. This whole reflection proves the ideas developed in The Art of Loving: the boys had to do a lot of mental work to reach true love, they all had different relationships with the girls and with themselves, and they had to work on it themselves and not just wait for someone else to bring them joy.

As the 起承轉結 structure is for a written work and the magic shop technique is a purely mental exercise, we can assume no one was really hurt in the process - no girls were involved and the boys didn’t denature themselves. Again this idea is made possible in the BU through time travel - but since it’s the BU, there are still people who are hurt, sadly.

However, the VCRs shown during the performances at the 2018 year-end ceremonies imply there was someone who helped them and that they want to help back:

It’s hard to tell who is that “you”. It can be the girl from the Love Yourself reflection but it can also be ARMY since we’re the subject of the next album, Map of the Soul Persona. Something that should be considered here too is that these VCRs were shown with songs from Tear (”FAKE LOVE”, “Airplane Pt.2″, and “Anpanman”) so rather than a teaser for Persona, they could be a development of Tear’s concept - except the last one of course. The masks and the doll concept were also most likely a complement to Tear - obviously the doll concept references the E version of Answer, but it’s a repackage including songs from Tear.

The series following Love Yourself is this time based on psychology, and more specifically on Jung’s works through references to Dr. Murray Stein’s Jung’s Map of the Soul.

At the moment it’s hard to know where they’re heading with this one as we only have one album. However, based on the graffitis in Persona’s Comeback trailer, we can assume the Map of the Soul series will be a trilogy made of Persona, Shadow, and Ego. These three parts of the psyche are tightly connected. The ego is the conscious and controllable part of our mind, the persona is the mask we wear to adapt to society and be able to live as a community, and the shadow is all the traits that were rejected from the persona. I detailed more ideas from the book in this summary.

If we go with such a trilogy, it means we won’t go deep in the psyche (to the self) and rather explore the surface (consciousness and personal unconscious).

Persona is the first part of this series. RM explained in his Vlive about the album that BTS’ persona is ARMY - and we do often represent them where we are. Most songs are about happiness and love: thanks to their persona, the boys could fit in the world and enjoy it at best. We can also mention “소우주” (Mikrokosmos) and its lyrics about everyone being a galaxy made of stars - the galaxy is also one of the metaphors used to represent the map of the soul.

BTS’ discography through a Jungian perspective

Before we start this part, please keep in mind it is an interpretation following the different releases so I’ll obviously make sure it makes sense. This, however, doesn’t imply Big Hit planned it, I’m just adapting to what we have. Also, had the last series been about another psychologist’s works, I would’ve made this interpretation based on this psychologist’s theories.

According to Jung, the psyche is something that grows along with the body. At first, there’s an undefined mass that’s both the self and the rest of the world. Progressively, through experiences and trauma, an ego develops - accompanied by a persona and a shadow. These allow the individual to differentiate themselves from the outside world. However, it creates a conflict within the being between the different parts that all have different goals: the persona wants to fit in the world, the ego wants to be an independent individual. An ultimate stage would thus be for all those part to become one again while remaining differentiated. But most people don’t reach it. Jung conceived this development as 5 different stages of consciousness. As the details get quite complicated I’ll let you refer to the book if you want to know more.

In BTS’s discography, we can link the development of the ego with the school trilogy. Through encountering the three main themes of life (dream, happiness, and love) the boys gain morals: you don’t need a dream, don’t be late to be happy, love is complicated. As for their social behavior, it is at first shaped by society (the teacher in “N.O”, the director and the other teacher in BTS Begins): they’re told to obey authority, to aim for a stable job and to create a family.

In the first stage, the consciousness tries to connect with the outside world to begin its existence. And indeed, the boys obey at first...

Before quickly revolting in the second stage, as they realize they’re different from the outside world

On the third stage, the perception of the world changes, the individual focuses more on concepts than objects. Which fits quite well with the YOLO and oniric philosophy behind The Most Beautiful Moment in Life.

Since WINGS is based on Demian and Demian is based on Jung’s works, there’s obviously a lot of connections. WINGS references the whole book but especially the end, with the idea of the bird flying to the god Abraxas. This image is most likely the ego getting inflated in the fourth stage and identifying with god. It’s also a stage of realism where we realize everything is a social construct.

In BTS’ concept, the bird is the young being accepting adulthood. However, rather than identifying with gods, it seems the boys rather related to angels/Icarus and thus to the whole notion of falling from the sky/sinning/succumbing to temptation. An interesting take we find in the WINGS Concept Book is that the fall of the angels and their rebellion against God is a step to grow up - possibly to grow into god themselves then, considering the stage of consciousness.

In the Love Yourself series, a lot of people have associated the girls with the anima of the boys. In Jung’s works, the anima is like your other half, the one who completes you and who exists in your subconscious. This interpretation has flaws but it’s still possible. It also fits with the fifth stage since it’s the one where all the different parts of the psyche reunite. Considering the concept of the series, we can interpret the different parts reuniting as the being finding inner peace and thus being able to love themselves.

Hypothetically, the 5 stages of consciousness stop here but Jung considered supplementary ones. It’s just that only a very small number of people reach it so it can’t be studied well.

But it doesn’t look like Map of the Soul will head here. As I said above, it seems they will rather explore the surface. Interestingly, the surface of the psyche is central in the first stages of consciousness. And the first stages of consciousness have been explored in the school trilogy. And Map of the Soul just happens to revisit the themes of the school trilogy.

And just like that, we connected the whole Reflection of Youth to Jungian ideas~

Now just for fun, here’s another one:

At first, the world population is just a mass

Out of it emerges the BTS self

Through a trauma of hate, they develop their ARMY ego

ARMY grows a persona of being a kind and generous fandom and a shadow made of hate, memes, and overreactions

Just like the map of the soul can be compared to a galaxy, BTS and ARMY reunite as one beautiful galaxy in concerts💜

Conclusion

Philosophy, psychology, proverbs, and just any idea intended to lead to a reflection have been in BTS works for a while now. It remains unsure if we’re supposed to know about them or not as they’re really not highlighted - The Art of Loving and Jung’s Map of the Soul being the exceptions. They remain pertinent to the concept they’re linked to though.

In such a context, it’s clear that only the fans will know about it. So just like hidden tracks on albums, it could be that those quotes are only intended for ARMY because only ARMY can understand them in the context of BTS’ works and their whole message.

And indeed, see how half-fans and journalists hurried to label the magic shop technique as a reference to Into the Magic Shop. Rather than the whole reflection connected to the 起承轉結 writing structure and explaining how they reached self-love, people just went with “OMG a child discovering the mysteries of the world!!”. Which is a theme Bangtan already explored and not with one but with eight references (see here) so I promise you, they really don’t need that trope anymore.

In the same idea, while Jung’s Map of the Soul and The Art of Loving are relatively easy to read, only a very dedicated fan will go through A Thousand Plateaus (before you ask, I didn’t, I only read the chapter of the quote).

To complete my thought on those quotes being background noise, they’re indeed something that’s hard to pick but also something that needs to be decoded.

As for the two books referenced that have been made very public and very explicit since you can buy them on Big Hit’s shop, as I said, first they’re easier to understand and second, BTS has gained a lot more casual fans who won’t necessarily take the time to search for all those details. So there’s a possibility they made it easier to find them so everyone could join in the fun. Lastly, BTS are more invested in those concepts and since their part of the works is mainly the lyrics and not at all the videos, it’s only logical for the ideas to be presented differently.

The solutions in the bottles varied from iridescent to deep, molten tar. I trailed my fingers over the bottles labels reading them out to myself in my mind. I’d rather mess up the pronunciation in my thoughts than verbally. Mama Luna didn’t have to look away from what she was doing, “stop touching things, you’re going to knock something over.” I rolled my eyes thinking Mama Luna didn’t notice, alas I wasn’t as sneaky as I thought. A swift swap to the back of my head and a submissive whine later I was reminded of my place. She dusted off her hands in satisfaction continuing about her business. That was a type of intuition that can only be earned with time; she didn’t need to see, but she could feel the snarky attitude. It was all lighthearted though. I’ve learned to appreciate her scolding, she only did it because she cared. I scrunched up my nose rubbing away the pain muttering out an apology.

“Namjoon just looks at things and they break. You’ve been here a month, and you still haven’t learned the motto of this house? Need I remind you ‘heart of a wolf, but tread cautiously like a hare’ Aure?” Aviva walked into the room with a fresh set of medical grade towels out of the laundry. I scrunched up my expression, resisting the urge to stick my tongue out playfully. Mama Luna’s conditioning was working perfectly. In the last few weeks, I’ve come out of my room more; Mama Luna had been letting me follow her around (then trailed by Aviva). In truth, she seemed to enjoy my company more than she let on. I’ve wanted to pay back their kindness by at least doing the little things around here. I’ve come to really enjoy Aviva’s company and found myself enjoying her lingering around me. Namjoon is often gone the majority of the time with his father preparing to be the next Alpha and Minister. Honestly the distance made you feel better to some degree, the whole mate thing was still overwhelming.

I took a towel from the basket and began folding. It was an obligation that each mate knew how to perform basic first aid, so here I was in the infirmary. I’ve already learned dressing and cleaning, hands only CPR, and the Heimlich maneuver. I purred at the compliments of being a fast learner and the best at it from Mama Luna. I had something I could be proud about. The last standard already came in handy when Namjoon got too excited about some freshly cut strawberries and swallowed a large one whole. Even after he cleared his throat I held onto him, only releasing with a blush flourishing when he turned in my arms to thank me.

During the big “interview” when I sat down with Mama Luna, Alpha Kim, and Namjoon, I told them the story line I rehearsed. A lie sprinkled amongst a deeper truth. They deserved that much, because I don’t deserve them. The healed bullet wound was enough to back the story up. I was given an ultimatum afterwards stay or leave. There was no obligation or bribing to stay, however, since I was Namjoon’s mate it would be conditional; but I was under their protection as long as I remained in this town, mate or no mate. The look on Namjoon’s face when his father uttered the option to leave would be something I can’t forget. I could see the glimmer of red in his eyes, but he rapidly blinked it away. It was odd, how I wanted to comfort him with promises, but I stopped myself before they were just sweet nothings.

I decided…to stay. At least until I could find a footing for myself, a way to distance myself from the Hunters and this pack. I hated to admit it, but I liked it here. I wanted to know what it feels like to have a community—family—again. I was still getting used to these emotions that came along with being a mate and surrounded by other wolves. Especially since this pack was so open with their emotions and affection towards each other. I just needed a safe spot to process it all before I threw myself back out there.

I paused as I was folding a towel but picked up again holding my tongue. I’ve had so many questions regarding what we were, I was a wolf, a werewolf to supernaturalist, but I knew nothing of my kind. Mama Luna, again, sensed the change in my demeanor, “spit it out child.”

I stuttered meeting the ends of the towel at the wrong location. I licked my lips feeling suddenly watched. I peered over at the two curious women looking at me. I finish folding the towel but held it my hand momentarily before placing it in a separate basket. “What’s exactly a mate? Why do we have them?”

A soft smile caressed Mama’s lips as she adjusted herself in her seat. She continued folding as if this was a story she’s told many times. Aviva’s eyes glimmered like a child being read a bedtime story. “Oh, I’ve always wanted to hear this!” Aviva scooted closer to me intertwining her hand in mine squealing in happiness. I huffed a laugh then pinched her cheek out but soothed it afterwards. She was too much sometimes.

Mama Luna’s brown eyes glimmered tiny golden flakes. Her eyes flickered until they were a swirling metallic gold. They lost focus, glazing overs as if the ancestors took over to tell stories of ancient times.

“The Universe created the gods, but we are the children of the Moon and the Sun.

When the Universe was at young age the gods roamed chaotically, spirits floated about having no true shape or place in the universe. The Sun questioned the universe why the world was like this, but the universe was unresponsive. Years of civil battle waged between gods and the universe. Some protesting that there was never to be order, then the other half arguing that order should be kept. The Sun clashed and grew, his passion and ambition never dying. Eventually he was the one who pulled the Universe together. He gave planets their shape, containing the spirits and giving them land to rule as a compromise. He became the leader of the universe.

The planets were content, although it took centuries and millennium for the residual angst to settle. They eventually aligned with the Sun.

Amongst the universe were two sisters Earth and Venus. The twin sisters were close, but Earth grew lonely from the physical distance with her sister. She pulled bits and pieces of herself, even plucking from the universe around her, to create a small companion: the Moon.

The Moon was a gentle spirit who was kind, and humble. She gave the meaning to the word maternally by taking care of the Earth, giving her comfort like a mother would. The guide the universe didn’t know it needed.

The Earth wasn’t satisfied with just the Moon, she asked the Sun and her most trusted Moon for more. To satisfy the ever gluttonous spirit, the Sun created beings like humans, salamanders, and scorpions. The Moon created creatures such as the whales, bears, and the wolves. Finally the Earth was then balanced, content with her creatures.

At every sunrise and sunset, the Moon and the Sun would meet in passing. At first the Sun didn’t take notice to the Moon, but when he noticed the new satellite in the short passing a new sense of interesting peaked in him. In those five minutes of exchanging skies, the sun would tease the Moon about her gentle passive ways; accusing her of her creating too many preys. She would tease him about his traditional and arrogant attitude; accusing him of creating too many predators.

Hundreds, and thousands of dusks and dawns passed, and the bickering never ended. However, the days when she couldn’t see him was her darkest. The shadow of Earth casted a shadow on the Moon in darkness every twenty-nine days hiding her from the universe. Those were her loneliest days when she didn’t even have Earth to rely on. At first, he would wait for her to show, but she would never show up. He believed he was content just watching over her, teasing her, but he couldn’t defuse the emptiness he felt when she wasn’t in front of him. However, when she emerged from her darkness, he felt renewed in his ambitions. He called the occurrence the New Moon, a beautiful sight every cycle feeling renewed every time she returned.

They had this indefinable physical and emotional pull towards eachother; like they had a separate unique gravitation pull just between them both. It was unlike anything in the universe.

The Moon sought out the Sun at sunrise and the Sun searched for his rising Moon every dusk. It became this push and pull harmony. They never wanted to spend another precious moment without the other. It was natural. It was gravity. It was simply meant to be.

She was his other half and he hers.

As creators they wanted something together, a creation of equal parts to represent their love; a son of the Moon and Sun.

He said give him an ego, but she said make him virtuous. A born leader.

She said give him the ability to be nurturing, but he said make him disciplined. A lover.

He said give him strength, but she said make him pensive. A scholar.

He said make him loyal, but she said make him intrinsic. A trustworthiness.

Their son.

It was a blessing, yet a curse the dynamic being they created. The wishes swirled amongst the molding, the clay of life, and there emerged from the wishes a half man-half wolf. The most empathetic and emotional creature the Sun could create: a human. The strongest, but wisest beast the Moon could create: a wolf. Their son, the lycanthrope.

His years on Earth weren’t always joyful. He loved to jump, find new adventures, and feel the soil under his paws when he transformed. The other sons and daughters of the Sun rejected him for his wolf counter. The children of the Moon rejected him for his humanity and charisma. The lycanthrope roamed the forest alone, his only companions were his mother and father. He watched his brothers and sisters find love and a community, but he was alone.

The cave he resided in was enough for two, but he managed alone. On the night of a hot, humid summer night, he heard the chirping of the crickets calling to their mate. He sat at the entrance of his cave howling longingly into the night hoping that a mate would hear him. He often felt envious that even his parents had eachother, but he had no one.

His mother heard his cries at night, and when his howls grew louder and longer she stepped away from the moon to come down to Earth. She watched him howl until he went back into his cave to sleep alone. It reminded her of the times of the new moon when she couldn’t see the Sun. Tears streamed down her face not realizing the unforeseen mistake they’ve made. They’ve been selfish in creating a singular being unlike anything they’ve done.

She returned to the moon and at sunrise she spoke to the Sun of their son’s loneliness. He refused the idea of a companion, the idea unfathomable to create a perfect match for their immortal son. Their son was the ultimate combination, why would he want more than he was already given? She persuaded her love for days, ‘my love, as the leader of the universe you should know that nothing is done alone. The world is full of opposites. You are my Sun, and I’m your Moon. Let our son have his other half.’ Her words finally dug through enough of his stubbornness until finally the traditional Sun bent to the Moon.

She asked Venus on her knees, ‘please, Venus, give me some love and beauty for my son. Your sister, Earth, needs it.’ The twin to Earth looked down upon the Moon, for she never knew the pleasures of praises as she has no moons. She sat up from her throne wanting to brush the Moon off, but the Moon bowed deeper. ‘Please, Venus! Please look humbly upon us!’

Seeing the desperation in the Moon’s eyes she searched inside her heart, opening her clasped hands to a reveal a golden pearl. ‘Look kindly upon it and it will do you well.’ The Moon’s thanks and praises flooded from her lips. The Moon vowed to always praise her, to bow at the temple of Venus, and promising that the creatures of Earth to do so as well.

At the next turn of the full moon she asked the Sun for molten fire to drop the golden pearl into. She poured water atop, solidifying it to a harden glowing star. She gently took the star in her hands while the Sun blessed it, and the new spirit hummed in their hands appreciatively. She whispered to it, ‘please, take care of our son.’ She let the star fall from the Moon’s surface towards Earth.

The falling star fell onto the surface of Earth near the threshold of his cave. From the crater arose a celestial woman, a form created in the image of Venus. A soft amber glowed about her as she emerged.

He stepped out from his cave, growling while holding his arm up over his eyes blinking at bright light. Who dared to disturb his sleep!

His jaw nearly fell out of its sockets as he lowered his protective arm to gaze at the goddess before him. His wolfen tail stilled behind him, his canine ears pinning to his head, he felt oddly submissive to the woman’s beauty. Her sweet scent sent ripples of pleasure up his spine. Her mere presence was electrical fanning over his skin. It was anything unlike he’s felt before. She was the paint covering his canvas in a new sensational color, an unforeseen image.

He felt the darkness of his cave light up as she stalked forward, keeping her planetary golden eyes on him. A beautiful smile spread across her strawberry lips reaching her eyes. Her long, delicate fingers trailed along his cheek bones and a content rumble trembled in his chest. Giggling at his eager attitude, her curious fingers didn’t stop as her eyes landed on his canine ears. To others he was a fearsome creature, he was considered brutish in his features with narrowing crimson eyes. He was a walking monster, an outcast, but she treated him like he was a precious treasure. There was nothing but adoration from her gestures and expressions.

There was this odd feeling in the pit of his stomach, a pull, a need to hold her in his arms forever.

He leaned into her touch, a warmth he never knew could exist. ‘What’s your name?’ His voice came out steady compared to what he was feeling internally.

‘Luna, and yours?’ Her voice! Her voice was like an angel, he was a puppy in front of her. He wanted to howl in celebration!

‘Alpha.’ He closed his eyes as little droplets of saline rolled down his cheek and touching her adoring fingers.

‘Alpha, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?’ He unhinged his reduced form bringing her into his toned arms and chest. She didn’t fight him on it, instead bringing her small arms around him to fall in place against him. She smoothed her soft hands against his bare back.

His ears flat for another reason, ‘please, don’t leave me Luna.’

Luna hugged him tight, feeling the vibrations of his purrs tingle all the way to her marrow. ‘Alpha, I’m yours and you are mine.’

He nuzzled into her hair, ‘…my mate.’”

Mama Luna’s lucid tone faded as her story came to an end. Her overall being taking on a less dreamy tone and her eyes returned to its warm brown. “They were the first mates. It’s been tradition, something passed on from the celestials, that there is another half to everyone. It’s something granted—gifted—to us mortals by the Gods.”

Aviva broke the lucidity by chiming in, “what a sucker. Who would’ve thought the first Alpha was a big cry baby?” I couldn’t help but laugh, of all things she took from the that she had to be the one to point that out.

Mama Luna decided to toss a towel towards the unmated wolf, “you laugh now, but wait until you find your mate.”

She rolled her eyes, but I whispered to her, “tread carefully little rabbit.” I moved out of the way quickly by sitting back before a wave of the once folded towels engulfed Aviva. I busted out laughing, the story may be folklore and something silly generations passed down but I felt glad to know a bit of our history. It still left me with many questions, “but that still doesn’t answer what exactly is a mate.”

Mama Luna turned towards you, “child, were you not listening? It’s your other half, someone that compliments you. The duty of mates is to comfort and love eachother unconditionally.” I nodded along the weight of her words were feathering my brain, not quite settling or tangible.

In the end mates were something innate, something unavoidable. It was something I needed to come to accept eventually…unconditionally.

The day carried on with some form of routine. At evening, like clockwork, Alpha Kim and Namjoon came home from the Ministry. I bookmarked my place in the book I struggled to put down going to greet the to-be-Alpha and the Alpha out of respect. However, as I was opening my door Namjoon’s was slamming shut. I could hear the rumbles and then a thrash of something being knocked over. It didn’t sound accidental, the angry rumble that followed afterwards were visceral. I felt the nausea of anger, the strain and stress on my own shoulders. All be it fraction of what he was feeling, but it made my wolf whine instincts working their way up naturally.

I bit my lip, taking a step into the hall closing my door behind me. I knocked on his door in three solid rasp, “…Namjoon?” There wasn’t a response, it went silent on the other side of the door, but I could hear the huffs and puffs coming from his labored breathing. As a werewolf our lung capacity was extensive, so to have labored breathing there must be something seriously off. He seemed to be attempting to calm himself down. I didn’t want to push him, give him the same respect he gave me to open up when I wanted to.

I was about to return back to my room when a husky voice sounded, “yes?”

I turned back towards the door stepping closer even though I knew he had wolf hearing. “Can I come in?” A grunt sounded at the other side and I depressed the handle stepping into the dark room. Through the darkness and orange glow filtering through the room, I saw two red eyes against the blackness staring at me. I shut the door, opting for privacy, engulfing the room in a filtered marmalade glow from the curtains.

It was just him and I. I didn’t step away from my post by the door, not knowing how the Alpha would react in his turmoil. He didn’t seem to be his gentle, logical self. “Are you okay?” He whined at the sound of my voice, his humanistic side fighting against the feral spectrum. He closed his eyes and I could see the shadow nodding.

I took this as a go ahead to step closer until I was almost brushing my legs against his knees. I could feel him radiating from even a foot away. “Would you like to talk about it?” As if I wasn’t in control of my own limbs instead letting my other half take over, I threaded my fingers through his hair brushing it away from his face wanting to see his expression clear.

Another whine left him as he finally blinked away a majority of the redness swirling in his irises. “Today…in the meeting… just…those,” he stopped himself short feeling himself struggle to get the taboo word out of his mouth. I smoothed against his scalp once more, a silent encouragement for him to continue or stop. He breathed in deeply, ”…Hunters. They say things sometimes that really can get to you.” His fingers tangled amongst themselves finding something to do. “It was brought up again. The disappearance of my father’s late secretary and his family. New evidence came in, but mid statement the Head Hunter laughed. Even going as far as muttering dogs deserved to disappear under his breath. It was— hard trying to remain stable and take the higher ground. All throughout the meeting they were making completely unnecessary comments. It makes me want to forget that I’m going to become Minister and have to deal with this, them. I just don’t know if I can do this sometimes.”

He noticed the twitch and stutter of her fingers at the mention of the Hunters. He noticed her heart rate increase almost doubling in rate. She cleared her throat and the pungent stress scent left her and her heart rate leveled out. It was amazing how it switched so rapidly, making him question if he really heard and smelled the change. Her hand came to a stop in her petting trailing down to his temple to his cheekbone, then tipping his chin up to look at her. “Joon, it’s okay to be angry. You’re allowed to emotions. Those men are terrible. I’m glad you controlled yourself, you’re a smart man Namjoon. Those scum don’t deserve your emotions though. You don’t always have to be strong, at least not in front of me. The sky will marble differently tomorrow.”

He wrapped one of his arm around my waist pulling me closer to him. I almost tripped from the unexpected movement, but his strong arms held me tightly. He leaned his head on my stomach breathing in heavily releasing his stress upon an exhale. “Just let me rest for a few minutes. I’ll be fine.” With each inhale he took in my scent and released the toxic anger out with each exhale. The stress I felt vicariously from him began to seep away replaced with a fuzzy feeling. I still had one hand carding in his hair, but my other came to rest at the nape of his nails scratching lightly. A shiver rolled down his spine a content purr leaving him shortly after. My cheeks blushed as he began to lightly nuzzle against my stomach. He looked up resting his chin on my stomach, “thank you Aure.”

Namjoon was like the sun, I was drawn into his orbit unable to escape his gravitational phenomenon. His radiance was unprecedented. I found myself lost in his gaze before I nodded.

He looked up searching my gaze “it’s the full moon tonight, would you like to go for a run with me?” I stepped back away from his touch, but something only let me half step. I wanted to, no, needed to get out of this house. My wolf has been scratching up my throat to let her breath, stretch her limbs, and feel the blades of grass beneath my paws. I let my hand slip out of his hair, “go, stretch your limbs, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

His hand snatched my wrist, but the grip wasn’t tight instead setting my worries to a simmer. My muscles were still rigor in his grasp, but his warmth was cathartic. “No, don’t shut me out Aure.” Naturally I caved towards him, that gravity pulling me closer. I realized I asked him to open up, yet I was pulling away. “Come with me Aure. It’s been a while since you’ve shifted, aren’t you feeling it?” He was right, but my wolf wasn’t what I was worried about. It was the patchy fur, the scars that would show. I wouldn’t have my clothing to protect me anymore, I was going to be all out on display.

As if he read my thoughts, his fingers tightened around my hand and laced themselves in between the divots of my fingers. “I will protect you Aure. I will stand by you…always.”

It took me a moment searching for a lie or a fumble in his expression, but they were stern and unblinking. I nodded, “okay.”

He hasn’t let go of my hand as promised, his fingers squeezed mine every now and then. He looked back a few times his eyes playing on that puppy look causing me to giggle at his impatience, “I’m here still.” I held up our hands as a reminder. He laughed boisterously bringing my hand up to his lips brushing his velvet lips in a sweet chaste kiss. I turned my head away from him concealing my blush. I had no idea how to react besides let my heart run a marathon to its content. He chuckled softly pulling me along until we were at the tree line.

“Uhmm… you can stand behind this tree and toss me your clothes. I’ll put it in the bin and I’ll follow along shortly.” I nodded stepping behind a wide oak tree, enough to cover myself. I stripped as fast as I possibly could disregarding the bundle of discarded clothing. I let the shift take over hunching, all be it a bit rusty but the familiar sensation of change was welcoming. Letting my form morph into my wolf was liberating. I leaned forward stretching out my hips then stood up like a cobra to fully extend my body. The scents of the forest, the rustling of the leaves, and the blood pumping through my veins magnified my senses. Everything felt more intense, more primal, I answered to my instincts with a content rumble in my chest.

I picked up the scent of masculinity against the fresh evergreen and oak. I gathered up my clothes in my jaw and rounded the tree but scurried back as soon as I saw Namjoon tucking his thumbs into his jeans to pull them down. He must’ve heard the rustling of dirt because he was laughing hard enough that he coughed. I waited until he was ready to round the tree on his own. I sat patiently with my clothes still in my mouth, honestly much too embarrassed to look him in the eye.

A crack, break, then a happy howl as I heard the heavy hit of paws to the floor. Only when he whined to garner my attention did I turn around. An article of clothing fell from my mouth as the bear sized wolf came into view. I was an alpha myself, but I was nowhere near his size a physical shadow encompassed me. His fur was an ombre of dark grey into a eggshell white; it was a beautiful, thick coat. One ear flattened against his scalp as he waited patiently, staring at me himself. We were both sizing eachother up, yet I didn’t feel the need to cover myself or my scars. Even though he stood about a few feet away he radiated heat like the sun, the shift making his metabolism shot through the roof.

The last time I saw his wolf was when I first came here a month ago, yet this time it felt different. Things were different.

He picked up the t-shirt waiting for me to drop the rest to store in safe keeping. I dropped the rest of the clothing for him to take. It was then that I was finally able to take in my surrounding, not just through a window pane on the third floor but physically there. I didn’t realize how much I missed all this. The rays of the moonlight felt like a fresh squeeze of lemon on your tongue sending shivers up my spine until my hackles raised. I wanted to howl in delight, I wanted to jump and roll around. I felt like a puppy eager for its first steps in the world. I closed my eyes monetarily honing into the sounds of the crickets and the sound of a stream within a miles range. I was at ease.

He came back empty muzzle and he circled around me, not in an aggressive manner but tauntingly in a “I told you needed this” manner. Although expressions are limited on the canine face, the little quirks with our ears and tail were expressive. I raised my brow with my tail lightly swishing behind me feeling mischievous. I gave him one look before I took off running. The trees flashed by me, fresh air filling my lungs every second and for the first time in a while truly felt alive. However, a figure easily zoomed past me, his larger frame propelling through the forest with ease. The pounding of our paws was almost silent against the moist mossy ground. Namjoon spared me a brief look before he continued onwards being childish. The moonlight filtered through the trees creating a new pattern of misshapen stars on the ground. I kept forth as we neared that water he kept running the water level nothing for him. I stopped at the bank but threw all caution out the window as Namjoon looked across the river at me. The water was up to my elbow tickling my stomach with splashes of chilled water. Before I got to the other side I used my tail to splash water at the him. His eyebrows raised but again I speed past him wheezes of what would be a laugh taunted him.

I slowed my pace banking off to the left to hide behind some trees playing into the childish game of hide and seek.

It took Namjoon to get ten feet away before intuition kicked in, he saw her hide behind the tree. A wheeze of a laugh left his muzzle, it never ceased to amaze him the duality of her. He decided to play his own game knowing this forest like the back of his hand.

I waited and waited for a few minutes, but the dark grey wolf didn’t come. I peeked from behind the tree my tail lightly swishing against my knowledge he’d hear the motion. Sudden like a puppy Namjoon pounced in front of me with his hind end raised and front lowered and his tail swishing a million miles per hour. He yipped excitedly and began to run off expecting me to chase after him. I ran full force after him, but he was smart dodging me before I caught up to him. He slowed just enough, then speed up as I was about to tag him.

I was panting hard, I wasn’t used to this type of exercise, so I stopped mid treck. Namjoon noticed and rounded back until he was approaching cautiously to check if something was wrong. My head hung low as I caught my breath. He nuzzled at my temple attempting to garner my attention. The soft caress was sweet and endearing as he whined. The bear-wolf was whining for attention. When I figured him vulnerable enough I pounced forward surprising the Alpha.

We rolled around twigs and leaves intertwining themselves in our fur. On the last tumble he reigned champion caging me underneath him. I could feel his hot breath panting as my fur lightly rippeled. The silence following was comforting. I pried my eyes open and couldn’t help staring at the wolf still hovering over me. Ever since I come to this family I found that thing I was looking for, that sense of community, that sense of security I didn’t know existed anymore. I found a bit of peace. I was so busy lost in my thoughts and panting I didn’t notice Namjoon leaning in closer. I gulped hard but remained motionless, I didn’t want to move. His eyes were full of adoration his crimson swirling something romantically floral. As if he was presenting a rose to me.

His elbow shifted as he bowed down carefully watching for any rejection or hesitation. I keep my sight on his eyes as if I was hyptnotized. His wet nose met mine staying there for a few seconds and then he backed away. The edges of his mouth seemed to pull back into a canine smile as his tail wagged fast behind him. Although my tail was pinned under me it still twitched back and forth and before I knew it I was smiling too. He leaned down again licking at my eye feeling the need to groom you, to provide any sense of comfort.

He licked a few more being urged on by a short whine. His tongue stopped its nurturing as he stilled above his chest squaring out and arms erecting again. It all happened before I could even come down from the high of affection. His tail was absolutely straight, and eyes narrowed a grim red a horrid growl bubbling in his throat. His nostrils flared, and he took a step caging my body underneath his as his head searched around. I stayed absolutely still trying to pick up on whatever it was, but I was too late.

The figure lunged forth shadowing you momentarily before knocking Namjoon to his side. I was caught under his paw jerking me along for the ride.

I rolled onto my side with a whine and I opened my eyes to Namjoon and another wolf circling eachother with their fangs and gums on full display. The growls were guttural. I looked for an opening, anything to help him out, I couldn’t let this stranger hurt him. I stood on all four of my paws becoming a tripod ready to lung at this stranger. However, Namjoon had other plans, he growled in my direction but didn’t break eye contact with the other grey wolf. The other wolf wasn’t as large as him, about my size, but he still posed a threat. From what I could decipher the wolf was a stray—a rogue—and the scent coming off him smelled atrocious. I figured he must be in heat.

Avia’s only told me stories about what happens to a wolf when they go into a rut as one of the other members of the pack just recently went into it. “Apparently if there’s wolf in a rut or if a female’s in heat and it’s not your mate’s scent, it’ll smell something bittersweet or bitter-savory; more bitter than sweet. At least that’s what they say? The pheromone thing is still trying to do its job of trying to let another wolf satisfy its heat/rut, but it won’t allow a ‘bond’.” This an explanation as why the woman who you address mentally as “snarky one”, has been MIA along with her mate. Especially why walking by their room days prior to their disappearance smelled like ammonia, sulfuric but a touch of vanilla.

Hints of cinnamon and vomit lingered in the air as excessive drool leaked from the rogue’s mouth. Namjoon made sure I understood this was something personal by standing in front of me blocking my perspective from he , this was a battle he had to fight on his own. This was him doing his job as the Alpha and Namjoon, my mate. His protective instincts kicking in.

The circling ceased when the other wolf became impatient, but his actions were careless and sporadic. He didn’t seem to have a set plan just snipping at any given flesh or limbs he could get his mouth on since he knew the size difference was putting him at an advantage.

My paws dug into the dirt, upset that I couldn’t participate.

It was all blurry images in monochrome.

Their large paws hitting the dirt resonated off the trees like a baseline. The leaves rattling was the winds and growls the vocals. The orchestra was building. Teeth snagged fur as parts of their pelt fluttered down like feathers. Namjoon’s extended his jaw to its full capacity, strings of saliva strung from his sharp teeth like strings of a harp. His ears flat and his hackles were raised, the beast was out to tame. The whip cracked with the sound of teeth clashing and oversized bodies slamming.

The longer I stared my confidence on Namjoon’s strength drained. The forest shifted to something casted in a purple light an open bear trap clutched at the leg of a faceless wolf that howled in agony. I was my old self again running away with my family trying to stay with me. I could feel the twine around my thighs and calves. It wasn’t the visual but the sounds of scratching and pouncing reminded me of those hunters.

I sat back on my hind legs, trembling feeling like a statue just watching—but not truly watching—the encounter before me. I was so lost in thought I failed to notice Namjoon pick up the limp rogue with his jaw, but still slight struggling figure tried to fight still. Namjoon backstroked once and then projected the rogue against a tree knocking the being out cold. Once he was sure he sedated the being he turned towards me. He noticed the glossed over look in my eyes, a look he was now familiar with. He limped hurriedly over whining and nuzzling his muzzle to break the spell.

Only after I felt licks being administered to my ears did I wake from my trance; I shook my head clearing of the images of the past. There was so much blood you would’ve thought him an auburn wolf. Panic set in so I began searching him, but he assured me by nudging me that the majority of it wasn’t his. The look in his eyes told me let’s go back home. I easily agreed ready to turn back to the house, but he whined harshly. My instincts kicked back in and I noticed he was supporting himself with his left side. I rounded to his right side supporting but I was only able to support him partially.

Once we reached the tree line he was panting hard. I whined with a small chirp as we came to the clothing container implications for him to close his eyes—only for a moment. I shifted back into my human form, the cold night air hitting instantly sending goosebumps like ripples all over your skin. I dressed rapidly, then set his clothing in front of his wolf petting his head letting him know I was done shifting. The sound of bones clicking, and humanistic sounds filled the otherwise quiet night. Namjoon laid on the ground and I could hear scuffling, but it sounded pained. I wanted to help him, but I don’t think it would be appropriate if I saw him in such a vulnerable state.

“Aure…can you help me?” I weaned open one eye thankful that he slipped his boxers on at least, but the blood pouring out a gash on his torso was alarming. I picked up his t-shirt and sacrificing it as temporary gauze. His wound was pressing, his shift already took enough energy out of him. The clock was ticking.

“You’re going to have to help me okay? Help me get you into a kneeling position and let’s move from there.” He nodded, and I assisted him into starting position from there we stood. All be it his towering physic was a bit of a challenge, but the adrenaline was a great aid in helping you maintain posture. I let him lean the majority of his weight on me. His gravity was centered on me and considering traveling all the way to the infirmary a journey of its own I sat him down on a dinning chair.

I called out to members of the house, stirring people from their sleep. Seojun, Namjoon’s cousin, popped up from the couch, awoken from his late night netflixing. “Seojun! Help me take him up to the infirmary.” Instantly he was on his feet, not asking questions just following orders. I trailed behind as he helped Namjoon up the stairs. I speed past them going to the infirmary prepping all the stuff I would need.

My sensitive ears were picking up movements in the house aside from us. Aviva popped in the doorway rubbing her eyes, “what’s wrong Aure?”

“Go call Mama Luna, its an emergency.” She looked around and finally caught notice of the soon to be Alpha being carried into the hall. She scurried away, and I got to work placing bottles of saline and gauze near the table. I helped his cousin lay down Namjoon situating to lay facing up. Namjoon’s eyes were closed his chest rising and falling steadily, but he winced whenever he took a deep breath.

I finally got a good look at the injury. I noticed an unsteady figure standing on the opposite end, like the blood drained from his face. “Thank you for your help Seojun, you can go now.”

His cousin nodded, “sorry I’m not good with blood…or anything medical for that matter.” He booked it before I could nod in reply.

Another sharp intake of breath reminded me of what was at hands. His grip was searching for mine, “Aure.”

Immediately I forgot the emotional aspect of things at the bell sound of my name and analyzed the extent of things. The gash ranged from his right false ribs all the way to his belly button. The stress he was under lately must be affecting his healing rate. I worked saline into the surrounding area and cleaned it gently. I worked at least three folds of gauze before I was able to see the damage. The gash seemed to be centimeters deep, but not deep enough to be critical. It would need stiches. “You’re going to need stiches.”

“Let me go get Mama, I promise—I—I promise I’ll be back soon, please don’t close your eyes.” His arm latched onto your shirt his eyes wide open and red.

“Aure. You can do it. I know you can.” This time around my eyes widened taking his hand from my shirt into my palms.

“No…Namjoon. I don’t have enough training. I could really hurt you.”

His eyes were stern staring into your burning rose golden ones. “You can do it Aure. I know you can. You can.”

He winced again seething through his teeth when pain resurfaces sharply. His eyes were pleading. I felt it all. I could feel a faint pain all over my torso, and I had to make it stop. My mate needed me.

“Okay...Okay. I got this. I can do this.” His hand fell back to his side nodding slowly waiting for my next move. I searched into the drawer pulling out a packaged suture set and more saline and gauze. I snapped on some gloves and positioned myself over him. I’ve seen this done before watching over Mama Luna a few times and over the shoulder as Aviva practiced on a dummy.

I rubbed a bit of a topical numbing cream before I brought up the needle. “I’m starting now.” He nodded closing his eyes, jaw relaxed. I stitched him the best I could. When the pain became almost too much and the cream wasn’t holding up anymore, his hand surged up to latch onto my free arm trying to steady himself. His body was trembling, but he was a true trooper teetering on the realm of consciousness and subconscious. I spoke to ease my mind and tension, “idiot, we could’ve just left. Why did you have to fight him?”

Namjoon’s eye were already a twinge of red, but this time the red filled his eyes in an unwanted anger. “What are you talking about? Of course, I had to. A rogue, much less a rogue in heat near my unclaimed mate and he was on our territory. I had to. What if he tried to—.” A growl rumbled through his lips just the thought of another male trying to lay claim on his mate made him want to go back out there and remind the rogue again who was the Alpha.

I noticed the conversation was taking a turn in his suturing for the worse, so I raised a hand to his cheek gently rubbing to calm him down. “Unclaimed? Are you and I already mates and that’s enough? Isn’t that how this all goes down?”

The red in his eyes flickered back to their murky burgundy at my touch. “No, it’s not official not in the eyes of our wolfs. Yes, we are mates, but your still unclaimed without my mark.”

I blushed at the implications instead focusing all my attention back on the needle work. He didn’t take offense to the silence instead resting his head back down again. I knew he would heal within the next few days, but the wound still required attention. Werewolf’s weren’t susceptible to infections. I knotted the best I could with five tight bonds and ever so gently cut the thread sealing off the stiches. I ran a hand through his head to coax him to raise his head. “I’m going to get the bandages and wrap you up, then were done okay?” He lifted himself up into a sitting position with my help wincing when he put pressure on his left side.

With practice thanks to Mama Luna I began wrapping around his chest. “Aure, can I ask you something?” I nodded as I wrapped another bandage loop around him. “Back in the forest, your eyes…they changed. They always seem to go somewhere else. It happened the last time I mention the Hunters. Is there something—is there something I don’t know?”

The air didn’t thicken, nor did my throat constrict, but the gold in my eyes intensified and he picked up on it. After wrapping the last loop, I tied it securely not looking up to him yet. I patted it gently satisfied with my work. When I couldn’t stare at his chest any longer I slowly looked up at him, my eyes latched onto his unwavering. “I’m not who you think I am.”

His face searched hers as her eyes mixed something more golden upon her words. His senses were scenting anxiety and fear in her words. However, her heartbeat was stable.

This wasn’t the way I wanted to tell him, or even allude to this. Time was never on my side anyways.

Pairing: BTS Jimin (Fae land Park Jimin) x Reader

Description: Fae land Park Jimin makes the 4 Goddesses pay for real, and finally goes to human world to get his girl...

Warnings: none, really, but death and a bit of evil things, mentions of violence. Future violence, punishing, yandere themes, sex references, a bit of possessive behavior etc.

Word count: 1726 , but it’s still and easy read :D

*** Fae Lands 2018***

He walked through the gates of his kingdom, it’s been long since he felt like home. The Goddess of Nature had made some changes, it was now snowing heavily and Jimin enjoyed the cold caressing his skin.

They will pay for this.

They trapped him, and Jimin will make sure they suffer. The Goddesses are not invincible, they might not be alive, but they have weak spots like everybody else.

-My God, - a lady saw Jimin and ran towards, - master!

Some of his other staff members ran towards and bowed, some even on their knees. When Jimin walked closer to his castle he felt watched. The Goddesses must be watching him return to his normal life. He didn’t know what year it was, all he wanted was just revenge.

Later, sitting in his throne room, his guards announced a guest and his father walked in.

-My son, - he said and bowed down, - it’s been so long.

-Father, - Jimin approached his father, - you didn’t look for me?

His father stiffened. He couldn’t deny that when Jimin was gone, a bit of him was relieved, Jimin’s hot temper was known almost everywhere.

-The portal was closed on our side of the Kingdom, - king said, - The Goddesses closed it, so my people didn’t get a chance to wander away from the Fae lands.

-What about other kingdoms? – Jimin asked as he walked back to sit on his throne.

-I was not allowed to go anywhere but the nearest villages and farms, the Goddesses made protection spells all around, so I wouldn’t get anywhere… - his father sighed, - how did you get out? Where did they leave you? I tried to come to your castle, but it was impossible to …

-Stop it, father, - Jimin’s stare was as cold as ice, - they froze me with magic in the same cave the meeting was held, and they froze my kingdom together with me… I just don’t seem to understand, what was the reason behind it?

He looked up to his father with teary eyes, but they didn’t reflect any emotions.

Even before Jimin reached maturity, his teachers had mentioned a lot of times, that he was menacing and merciless to his victims, a disturbing appearance when he smirked. The way he killed, as if he had this lust for blood and the pain he inflicted, was consuming him to the bone.

His father didn’t know much, he just knew, that Jimin would be a deadly assassin, that’s what the fortune teller had said, when his wife was expecting the baby. They told them, that this special baby boy would master his skills to perfection and use it to his advantages, throwing people around, killing and not caring after all.

At first his wife- the Queen, wouldn’t even look at Jimin, but soon after her heart melted, and she cared for the boy.

-My dark Fae blood… is that it? – Jimin asked. His mother was from light Fae and his father from dark Fae’s, their union most powerful. – If you would allow me to get back to my business now, I would much appreciate it.

The guards came in and took the king with them. Last thing the king saw was the wicked smile of his son’s and the laugh before closing doors.

-I want the Goddesses here now, let’s have a chat, shall we?

Jimin had mastered a perfect plan, using a spell that binds the Goddesses to a human body, you kill the body they are trapped in, and they die together.

He chose four women from his kingdom, to be possessed when the goddesses would drink the wine, that had a little something in them for the spell to work, and Jimin was sure, they wouldn’t want to make him angry.

The doors flew opened and the Goddesses levitated inside.

Jimin was sat at the table with a glass in his hands. His silver hair a bit messy, he bit his lip in anticipation. This is going to be fun.

The drugged bodies of four women where just behind his throne, behind a curtain, a spell hiding them that the Goddesses wouldn’t know anything.

-Jimin? – one of them spoke, -what a surprise?!

-Please, sit down, - Jimin said and smiled, offering, - wine?

-Yes, please, - the Goddesses played dumb, thinking of a possible reason, why Jimin has them here now, if he knew they trapped him all those years ago. – So, tell us, prince Jimin, why are we here?

He waited a few moments taking a sip from his own glass and saw how all the four ladies drank a bit. He didn’t need much; the effect was supposed to be quick. When he saw them look at each other in confusion, he lifted the spell and soon the guards tied up all four women to chairs.

-What is happening? - one of them asked, trying to get loose of the ties. Jimin smiled. He was so proud of what he had done.

-Think about what you are doing, Jimin! – one of them shouted.

-Oh, trust me, I know what I am doing. I am punishing the responsible. You froze me for 300 years, I used all my Fae power to break free, and look, here I am. So, what do you think? How powerful am I? I thought about it for a really, really long time… why would all of you try to get rid of me… huh… and then I understood.

Jimin drank his wine and opened a book, that he had left nearby.

-It’s because I am more powerful than the four of you together, I can kill you without hesitation and you have foreseen it, haven’t you? I mean, you didn’t know why I would kill you, but here is the reason… it’s your own fault after all.

-We can help you, Jimin, - another spoke.

-You…- Jimin laughed bitterly, - I don’t need your help.

With a snap of his fingers the speaker’s neck was broken and her body burned to ashes. Jimin didn’t waste no time.

-What is the spell that has the portal closed, huh?

The three goddesses stayed quiet, not making a sound.

-Don’t make me repeat myself, - he spoke and continued to browse through pages of the magical spell book. – you know, I used to be very patient.

And when the second woman screamed in pain, the other two were trying to choke sobs. Her body trembling, she was being burned from the inside, and then gone completely. Jimin took another sip. Then the Goddess of Nature spoke softly.

-Y/A/N … - Jimin sat on the edge of his chair.

-What about her? – he spat in anger.

-You still want her, right? – the other Goddess spoke.

Jimin bit the inside of his cheek. She needed to suffer as well for what she had done.

-Let me show you, - she spoke, and Jimin let her loose.

-One wrong move and your friend dies, - Jimin held his fingers up.

The Goddess walked closer to one of the mirrors that were lined up on the wall. She moved her hand up and the mirror showed a clear picture of a girl, that looked a lot like Y/A/N. Jimin was there in an instant staring at it.

-How is this… possible? – she was a mortal woman, how was she alive? Was she into witchcraft? No wonder how she made a deal with the Fae land Goddesses.

All sorts of things were mixing in Jimin’s head, more and more being clouded by the anger he felt.

-I can help you locate her, - the Goddess spoke and Jimin snapped his fingers killing the other Goddess sat at the chair. She screeched running forward to the goddess who was tied up, was on her knees when she vanished and cried.

Jimin chanted a spell, that bound her soul to the mortal woman’s body, and stripped her of all the magic she possessed.

-I will keep you by my side, so maybe we shall exchange our names, you can call me prince Jimin, - he smiled. The Goddess of Nature was no longer a Goddess, she was a simple, mortal woman now, thanks to Jimin’s powers.

-Dacia, - she spoke, - my name is Dacia Rose and I shall be your servant till the day I die…

Fae land Jimin had finally found a loophole closer to the place you stayed in. The shopping center was once a gate between two lands, and you were this close to being his.

Your friend nudged you playfully.

-Just a bit left.

The stage was this close, you could almost smell the after shave the guys were using. Your friend took pictures of Namjoon from afar and you thought it would be a good idea to get some of Jimin.

As you took out your phone a blast of lighting happened, and the table, where BTS sat down flew up in the air, making Jin scream like a woman, and the rest of the guys all holding to each other.

Then everything felt like in slow motion.

Your friend called out your name, holding onto your arm, and pointing to where the light came from. Security seemed to be stuck, and you noticed that no one could move, and a magical dome came over all of the fans that were inside.

You held your hands together, both your friends looking around to see what was happening, and then there it was. The portal opened and a figure stepped through. BTS guys looked stunned, Fae world Jimin was looking directly at BTS Jimin and smirked. Then he turned around, and more than ten other people came from the portal as well, dressed up as ninjas, all in black clothing.

Fans were shocked, when in their front stood not one, but two Park Jimin’s looking almost exactly the same, and unexpectedly you met his eyes, feeling like he was staring directly at you, his eyes flashing to different colors from all the magic he possesses.

-Hello there, humans, - Jimin spoke, and a handful of ninjas went over to BTS and trapped them with their weapons, - I suggest you don’t move, and do as I say.

BTS’s “Spring Day” Is Now MelOn’s Longest Charting Idol Group Song

Once again, BTS has proven that they are their own greatest competition by breaking their own record.

BTS’s emotional hit single “Spring Day” is now MelOn‘s longest charting song. It has charted for an incredible 73 consecutive weeks since its debut!

The previous record holder was “Blood, Sweat, and Tears”, which music critics have named BTS’s best song of all time. “Spring Day” came in at 9th on their list.

This news may come as no surprise to fans, since ARMYs recently rated “Spring Day” as BTS’s greatest song ever. By ARMYs’ rankings, “Blood, Sweat, and Tears” is 4th on the list.

In addition to charting for 73 weeks, “Spring Day” is still holding onto its spot in MelOn’s top 30. This is an impressive feat for a song that debuted more than a year ago!

On Twitter, fans have congratulated BTS and are celebrating their new record.

Fans love “Blood, Sweat, and Tears”, but “Spring Day” has a special place in the hearts of many.

This musically diverse song has been a steadfast favourite since its release. “Spring Day” weaves, electronia, rock, and hip-hop together to create a yearning song with a dreamy atmosphere.

The music video makes reference to the short story, Those Who Walk Away From Omelas, which is about a child who must live in misery in exchange for the town’s happiness. Many fans have connected to the song’s lyrics and themes on a deeply personal level.

When it comes to longevity, “Spring Day” is a queen who won’t easily be dethroned. Even so, BTS may beat their own MelOn record again in the future, since their popularity shows no sign of waning. So far BTS’s most recent album, Love Yourself: Tear, is one of the best-selling albums of 2018.

It has also done what no other K-Pop artist has ever done before: ranked in the Top 10 for the most physical albums sold in the United States at the halfway point of the year.

De Peiza told Barbados TODAY that contrary to calls for some celebration at the news, there is actually little to write home about. It was under Mottley’s stewardship that the “country dropped five notches to default status in the first place”, she declared, noting the Prime Minister’s announcement that Barbados would defer payment on debt within days of coming to power on May 24 2018. For several years, the nation’s sovereign debt rating lay firmly at junk status during the 2008-2018 DLP administration. De Peiza said: “We have now moved one small step higher than where we were before the default. On the 31st of May last year, we were one step below where we are at now. “So it is only slight progress, it is not six notches as they [Government] are saying. In fact, we would have been further along had Government not defaulted.” The DLP leader was also critical of the length of time that it has taken Government to return the country back to its starting position. She said: “We are definitely not out of the woods, we are still in junk bond status but the biggest takeaway for me is that we dropped five points on June 1, 2018 when this present administration decided to go the route of default and we have just come back up by six points and that has taken us 18 months. ‘This suggests to me that our 18 months could have been spent better.” New York-based Standard & Poor’s yesterday raised Barbados’ long- and short-term foreign currency ratings to ‘B-/B’ from ‘SD/SD’ and assigned its ‘B-‘ foreign currency issue rating to foreign currency debt delivered in the exchange. The rating agency also affirmed its ‘B-/B’ long- and short-term local currency sovereign credit ratings and ‘B-‘ issue-level rating on Barbados’ long-term local currency debt. It was on June 6, 2018 that S&P lowered its foreign currency sovereign issuer credit ratings on Barbados to ‘SD/SD’ from ‘CCC+/C’. This came four days after the newly elected Government announced that it would immediately suspend its external debt service payments and seek to make interest payments on its domestic debt while negotiating a restructuring agreement. Yesterday’s news of S&P’s upgrade prompted congratulatory responses from economists and key private sector players. The common theme from experts is that the country’s vital signs are good and its chances for a full recovery to investment grade appeared likely. But De Peiza told Barbados TODAY that Barbadians have paid an unnecessarily high social cost for any perceived gains from the global credit rating agency. The DLP president said: “Our concern is that alongside of the economic situation, is how our people are faring through all of this. “Just yesterday the private sector reported sluggishness, and this is because consumer confidence is still out to sea. “We also have to consider our social fabric, which has remained a major concern for the Democratic Labour Party and the wider country. “So we can’t just have the one yardstick, it must go much further than that.” In her response to the new ratings, Mottley said: “I want to congratulate the Barbadian people for pulling together and making the necessary adjustments and sacrifice to put us all on the right path to sustainability. “We are not yet where we need to be but if we stay the course and if we focus on adding value in all that we do and on growth, I have every confidence we will make it and reverse the impact of the lost decade. “We can return the country to investment grade and continue to build people’s confidence in all that we are doing.” (BT)

STEPHEN WELCOMES S&P UPGRADE, URGES CAUTION –Barbados’ most recent upgrade by New York-based credit rating agency, Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Financial Services, is an achievement worthy of congratulations, economist Jeremy Stephen has declared. But while it will go a long way in mending investor confidence, the ratings boost is no indication that citizens should expect an ease in the financial burden they have been asked to bear, he warned. He told Barbados TODAY: “It is good that this notch has come about likely because of increased prudence when it comes to reviewing a government’s financial position. “But again, even though the outlook is positive, one must always encourage the Barbados Government to continue putting the people first and making sure they keep their economic house in order.” Barbados’ creditworthiness was lifted six notches, as S&P raised the long- and short-term ratings for ‘B-/B’ from ‘SD/SD’ while assigning its ‘B-‘ foreign currency issue rating to foreign currency debt delivered in the exchange. The improvement comes after Government successfully exchanged over $1 billion in new 2029 bonds and $64 million in past due bonds to holders of its US dollar bonds following the administration’s 2018 default. According to the economist, such achievements are the result of prudent economic management policies and a clear indication that government is capable of handling its debts. “Fundamentally if a government can manage its debts, even with reduced payments or some period of moratorium agreed upon by investors, S&P and the others would consider it to be prudent financial management,” explained Stephen. While noting the protracted period in which Government and external creditors remained at an impasse over the restructuring of external credit was “rather uncommon”, he was happy to see Government’s methods finally bearing fruit. Stephen suggested that for the past six years a debt restructuring exercise was the only plausible solution to Barbados problems as global interest rates had become unsustainable. He said: “Most institutions and persons would find themselves wanting if they continued paying debts at interest rates that were higher than what the markets expected them to pay or under more onerous terms than what the markets expected.” To the Government, he declared “all still is not out of the woods” and implored leaders not to cease their efforts until the benefits of economic policies could be enjoyed by all. Stephen said: ” You probably will not hear me say we are out of the woods for a while, but it is something to be congratulated and it does speak to our standing as a destination for investment. “We just hope the economic feeling on the ground becomes the same and that Government continues to improve but not at the behest or to the disadvantage of the people. “They both have to act coherently and concurrently.” (BT)

ECONOMY ‘ON TRACK’ WITH CREDIT RATINGS BOOST –Buoyed by a major upgrade of Barbados’ creditworthiness yesterday, the private sector touted expectations of rising investment levels with renewed confidence in the economy. Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) Edward Clarke told Barbados TODAY that Barbados’ creditworthiness coming out of default status was “excellent news” for the economy, investors and residents. “Obviously the country is on the right track as you can see and this will be good news for investors. It will give us more confidence in the economy,” He said. Clarke, who is also Co-chair of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) monitoring committee, said he was confident that the Government’s austerity programme was on target. He said he remained hopeful that once the benchmarks under the BERT programme were achieved the island would return to investment grade. He told Barbados TODAY: “We have a long way to go in Barbados still but obviously we are on the right track. “We look forward to seeing Barbados back to investment grade all around, which is where the ultimate goal should be. “Once we continue in the direction in which we are going I think we should get there. “It is not going to be easy but we are on the right track and this is good news for the private sector and for all investors and all Barbadians.” On Wednesday, the New York-based Standard and Poor’s (S&P) raised its long- and short-term foreign currency ratings to ‘B-/B’ from ‘SD/SD (Selective Default), and assigned its ‘B-‘ foreign currency issue rating to foreign currency debt delivered in the exchange. This means the island’s long-term foreign currency ratings moved six notches up to the ‘highly speculative’ category, while the short-term foreign currency rating is between non-investment grade speculative and highly speculative, both up from ‘default’. After reaching a debt swap deal with bond holders of Barbados US-dollar debt, Government exchanged over $1 billion (US$531 million) in new 2029 bonds and $64 million (US$32 million) in past due interest bonds to holders to those bond holders that have been in default since 2018, of which about $1.3 billion (US$677 million), plus accrued interest, was outstanding. The ratings agency also pointed to the need for Government to stick to its austerity programme, stating that failure to meet fiscal and debt targets over the next year could weaken investor confidence and result in loss of capital inflows. But S&P said it could raise the ratings over the next year should Government adhere to its fiscal targets and reform agenda, which it said could strengthen investor confidence and contribute to improved gross domestic product growth prospects. RBC SELLS EC BANKS TO HOMEGROWN OPERATORS – Major Canadian banks continued their exodus from the Caribbean today as RBC Royal Bank of Canada agreed to sell all its banking operations in seven Eastern Caribbean nations to a consortium of indigenous banks, the banks announced jointly. The sale will not have any impact on the Barbados RBC Royal Bank operations, an official confirmed to Barbados TODAY. Five island banks are to take over RBC Eastern Caribbean branches in Antigua, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as regional businesses operating under RBC Royal Bank Holdings (EC) Limited in Nevis, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The five banks – 1st National Bank of St Lucia, Antigua Commercial Bank Ltd., National Bank of Dominica Ltd., the Bank of Montserrat and Bank of Nevis Ltd – are to operate the RBC banks. Head of RBC Caribbean Banking Rob Johnston said the transaction was subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions, and should be finalized “in the coming months”. Johnston said: “Consistent with our strategy of being a competitive leader in the markets where we operate, RBC is always evaluating opportunities for our business. “Earlier this year, we were approached by a consortium of indigenous banks with their proposal to acquire all RBC Eastern Caribbean operations “After a review of our operations and strategy, we determined this opportunity was a good decision for the long-term future success of RBC Caribbean, and also, that it aligned with our vision to help our clients thrive and communities prosper.” Johnston pointed out that the bank had been in the region more than a century, adding that “we remain committed to the future of the Caribbean and to a vision of digital innovation that transcends traditional services”. He said: “This transaction will allow us to realign and focus our strategy on Caribbean markets where we can achieve that vision most successfully. “Self-determination is the highest level of empowerment – and the indigenous banks acquiring this business will now have an increased opportunity to influence the development of their communities.” Back in 2007, RBC had bought the Trinidad and Tobago-based RBTT Financial Group operations in the region for about US$2.2 billion. Financial terms of the current transaction were not disclosed. But RBC is to release its first quarter 2020 results and host an earnings conference call on February 21. A year ago, Managing Director of RBC Barbados operations Robert De Silva said that the Canadian bank had no intention of leaving the Barbados market. “We have been part of Barbados for 108 years. If you think about it, we have branches in the Caribbean before we had branches in Toronto, so Barbados is an important part of our Caribbean strategy and we intend to be here for the long-term,” Da Silva had said then. In a joint statement today, Managing Director of 1st National Bank of St. Lucia Johnathan Johannes said the consortium was formed to expand the scale of the locally owned banks in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union. Johannes said: “This transaction gives us the size and scale to play a more active role in the development of our respective countries. “We see this transaction as the first step in achieving even greater synergies, efficiencies and cross-territory marketing opportunities “ Johannes who said the homegrown banks “embrace and eagerly anticipate that opportunity”. The consortium was advised by accounting firm PwC Jamaica, led by Wilfred Baghaloo. He said that the transaction “demonstrates that Caribbean countries and businesses have the capacity and capability to come together when the circumstances are right”. Back in 2014, RBC had also finalized the sale of its RBC Jamaica operations to the Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited. The sale of the RBC operations in the Eastern Caribbean comes another Canada-based commercial band withdraws from the region, leaving sole footprints in Barbados Scotiabank drastically scaled down its operations last month when it finalized an approximately $246 million (US$123 million) deal with Republic Financial Holdings Limited, which operates as Republic Bank. The countries affected by the Scotiabank sale were St Maarten and the Eastern Caribbean territories of Anguilla, Grenada, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines. ACTIVIST, STILL ‘UNHAPPY’ WITH HOTEL PROJECT, BACKS PLANNING PROCESS – With the recent completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment on the proposed $200 million (US$100 million) Hyatt Centric hotel project at Bay Street, the man who was legally challenging the granting of building permission to the developers has said he is satisfied that the correct procedure is now being followed. Attorney-at-law and Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong told Barbados TODAY that the judicial review he sought for the 2017 decision by then Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to grant approval without having first conducted an EIA, was now a moot point. He said: “My challenge was essentially asking the court to scrutinise the manner in which [then] Prime Minister Stuart purported to have processed this application. “And I did this because I did not believe that it had been properly processed and I therefore presented the judge with all the reasons why I had come to that conclusion. “So, if under the new administration, the proper legal procedure for processing these applications is being followed– an EIA has been done and Town Hall meetings are being held– then I can have no quarrel with that. “I still do not approve of the project, but It is not for me to make the decision on the application. “However, it was my right to insist that it had to be processed in accordance with the law,” he said. An extensive study, which is available for download on theHyattcarlislebay.com website well as for viewing at the public library, encompasses a wide range of areas, which include the project’s impact on heritage, drainage, traffic, socio economic factors, pollution and a geotechnical study. The study also factors in disaster management and an environmental monitoring plan. Comissiong told Barbados TODAY that while he is still in the process of going through the assessment, he is satisfied that the developers are now at least following the legally required procedure. He said: “The legal process was always that an Environmental Impact Assessment be done, the results of the [EIA] be made available to the people of Barbados, that town hall meetings be held where the people of Barbados could discuss the results of the report and raise questions. “In addition, all of this has to be fed back to the Town and Country Planning Department and in particular the person who would be ultimately making the decision [Prime Minister Mia Mottley]. “This was always the process and it is good to see that the process is now being followed.” Stuart, in his capacity as Minister responsible for town planning, had given developer Mark Maloney’s company – Visions Development Inc. – permission to build the multi-million-dollar high-rise hotel resort in the centre of a UNESCO-designated World Heritage area. But Comissiong, a long-time political and social activist, has been relentless in his objection to the project and earlier this year he had made it clear that he was not backing down from the challenge, which has been cited as one of the reasons for the project being at a standstill for the last three years. But this afternoon, Comissiong explained that the developers have essentially undertaken a new application for planning permission. While he said he was still not happy with the proposal, his legal standing as a citizen of Barbados only extended to the procedural discrepancies. He pointed out that it was now up to the people of Barbados to study the report and make any objections that they may have. Comissiong declared: “It is now up to the people of Barbados to make use of the process. “It is now their duty to go to the public library or go to the website to access the EIA report to read the report and analyse it and to determine for themselves whether the correct studies were done in a serious and rigorous manner and whether they have confidence in the outcomes of the studies. “They must then go to the town hall meetings and participate in the process. “This is why this process was so important because we the people of Barbados must of have a say in the process. “What we say in those town hall meetings must be taken into account by the Prime Minister in the making of her decision.” (BT)

HOTELIERS ‘UNABLE TO GET PROMISED CONCESSIONS’, SAYS BHTA – Over a year after hoteliers were given a promise by Government that they would be able to more easily access concessions under the Tourism Development Act and the Tourism Development Amendment Act, nothing has changed, they have claimed. Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) officials also pleaded with the Mia Mottley administration to go back to Parliament to provide clarity to some tax measures that were implemented earlier this year. Chairman Stephen Austin reported that members were still coming up against a cumbersome process when they tried to access concessions, complaining that “the playing field is still not level”. He said: “We have been struggling and members have continued to be frustrated by accessing these concessions. “The procedure to access concessions is cumbersome and outdated.” In October 2018, Prime Minister Mia Mottley gave the assurance that her administration would be creating a “level playing field” across the industry, allowing hoteliers to access the approved concessions the same way in which Sandals was accessing them. She said then: “Immediately, I can say that for those persons in the Barbados hotel sector who now currently have to go every two or three weeks to get renewal from the Ministry of Tourism, I have indicated to the Minister of Tourism that is unacceptable and that they should equally be allowed the same benefit that Sandals has now.” But a visibly annoyed Austin Austin told the BHTA’s fourth quarterly general meeting at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre that there has been no improvements in the process over a year later. He said that there continued to be “procedural runaround”, which was extremely frustrating for members. “I am afraid… the playing field is far from level. The field actually reminds me of a cow pasture with big holes and crevices,” said Austin. Austin told the BHTA members that he feared it could take months before a new Fiscal Incentives Bill was created, passed and proclaimed “while the tourism industry continues to suffer great delays by the extensive process”. He said too many members were still unable to access the concessions while others were simply turned off by the lengthy process and “turn around from all angles”. Hoteliers were told they were using the wrong letterhead, their signature “appears funny”, or they encountered problems with Customs trying to differentiate between a bedsheet or skirting for example, he said. “I think we have to go beyond the list and get to a point where we are allowing people to access concessions and allow them to do so and police it,” he declared. Austin pleaded with Minister of Tourism Kerrie Symmonds to help arrange a meeting between the BHTA, the Ministry of Finance and the Comptroller of Customs so they could “agree to a procedure that would alleviate the challenges that we have”. “The time for action after lengthy discussion is now,” said Austin. Another sore point for members has been the Tourism Levy Bill and VAT Amendment Act, Austin said, while explaining that the delay in those pieces of legislation has left the industry with a level of uncertainty as it relates to the correct level of taxes to be collected. He said: “It is necessary for this bill to be passed so that we can get on with advising our partners and stakeholders in our industry about the correct level of taxation. “The implication of this legislation not being established could be significant to the collection of the correct levels of revenues from the levies. “Many in the industry are unsure of the level of levies and are awaiting the policy notes from the enacted legislation.” He said while he understood the industry had to “pay our fair share in taxes”, he was still hopeful that the issues would be ironed out soon. BHTA Chief Executive Officer Senator Rudy Grant said in relation to the issues about access to concessions under the two laws, a meeting was requested with the Ministry of Finance and he expected that meeting to take place this month. ‘MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF ELDER-ABUSE PERPETRATORS’ –Increasing reports of the elderly being thrown out of their own homes and continuously exploited is a matter that former chairman of the National Assistance Board (NAB) David Durant is calling on authorities to use the full weight of the law to rectify. He said he was continuously bombarded with reports about an increasing number of senior citizens being evicted, neglected, physically abused and in some instances being forced to sign over their properties to relatives and caregivers. “And then they are being left at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) abandoned,” Durant said. “They are carried to the Geriatric Hospital and receive no visits from the family members who are finished with them. They are put out of their home that they worked hard to build. Put out of their own home by their children. “I am hoping that elderly [citizens] being put outside by their own family members will stop. “And the financial exploitation where monies are being taken without their knowledge, and all that they have accumulated for this point of their life just being squandered by younger people is not fair.” Speaking at a Christmas luncheon for the elderly at his Restoration Ministries Church, Durant said it was high time that the courts made an example of someone abusing the elderly. Durant said he believed that once a serious message was sent that Barbados would not tolerate any form of abuse of the elderly, others may think twice about mistreating the vulnerable pensioners. Regardless of a person’s age or circumstances in life, they should be given the opportunity to age with dignity, respect and shown compassion and love, the pastor declared. He added: “They need to be shown that love and attention by family members especially, because we can’t depend on Government to do everything. “I know that the present Minister [of Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde] is very concerned about it because even before she became minister over the elderly, when I was NAB chairman, she used to call me and express concern. “So I know that she is as concerned about it as I am and I hope that we would have stronger legislation. “I know some things have already been put in place, but now the implementation is important that somebody be made an example.” He said he was also concerned about the need for more accommodation to be made available for the elderly since homes currently in place were full. Durant said: “Some elderly people are being evicted and put alongside the road with their things. “And that hurts me because any nation that is treating their elderly in this kind of fashion is the nation that will stand the judgement for such a mistreatment. “The Bible says ‘honour your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land’. The more we honour the elderly the better it will be for us.” He thanked all those who contributed to the luncheon where over 250 people were fed a traditional Christmas meal. They were also treated to an entertaining concert where several members of Restorations Ministries delivered performances. Prominent gospel artist Sister Magrita Marshall performed some of her popular hits. “We want to be able to give them as much love as we can during this Christmas season, make them feel at home, bless them,” Durant said. PINE MAN ACCUSED OF WOUNDING – A system operator will next appear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on April 23 next year on charges of wounding a man and damaging a car. Geoffrey Lawson Marlon Lovell, of 106 Parkinson Field, Pinelands, St Michael is accused of damaging a car belonging to Ryan Thomas on April 11, intending to damage such property or was reckless as to whether such property would be damage. The 47-year-old is further alleged to have assaulted Thomas on October 17 causing him actual bodily harm as well as unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on the same complainant on November 2 and 3. The accused pleaded not guilty to the offences before Magistrate Douglas Frederick today. With no objections he was granted $5,000 bail. (BT)

HIGH HOPES FOR NEW COACH – National Sports Council coach Margaret Cutting has been appointed the coach of the Bajan Gems senior netball squad. And, she has to hit the ground running, with Barbados staging a Caribbean/African Cup in the first quarter of 2020. Cutting, 54, has been a NSC coach for the past 25 years. She replaces Sandra Bruce-Small, who was the coach for the last five years. Cutting was the assistant coach to Bruce-Small with the senior team and she also assisted when Barbados won the AFNA Under-21 Qualifier in St Maarten in 2017 and competed at the finals in Botswana in 2018. In making the exclusive announcement to the Weekend Nation, president of the Barbados Netball Association Nisha Craigwell said the BNA was highly optimistic of Cutting being a successful national coach. Four Extraction Companies That Top BT Global Growth’s List

BT Global Growth’s game plan is to go long and short on a wide range of investments, but in this interview with The Gold Report, Paul Beattie, cofounder and managing director of the hedge fund, focuses on four undervalued extraction companies on which the fund is definitely long.

The Gold Report: Welcome, Paul. Would you tell us a little about Montreal-based BT Global Growth and your investing philosophy?

Paul Beattie: BT Global Growth is a hedge fund that I cofounded 10 years ago. We’re focused on the Canadian capital markets, especially international companies listed on Canadian exchanges. The business is abroad, but the company may be listed here. We find this to be the most inefficient part of the Canadian market.

We are long and short on all sorts of things and we don’t use leverage. We look for companies that are trading three and four times cash flow and have enterprise value:earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EV:EBITDA) as low as three times or four times, if we’re lucky and find these opportunities. Then, of course, there are stocks in the same sector that have monumental valuations and trade at 50 times or 35 times cash flow, and it makes no sense. We short one against the other, and over time it works.

And on top of that, we short other things. The Japanese government wants the yen much lower, so we short the yen against the U.S. dollar. We’ve been doing it for years, and we’ll probably continue to do it for years.

We have macroeconomic views that tie into a lot of the main themes. They work as good hedges on the existing portfolio. We’ve been compounding at 10+% a year, year-in and year-out, and the stock markets have been doing about half that. We’re never fully exposed to the market, but we manage to do almost twice the return.

We’re very proud of the fact that we survived the disastrous year of 2008 when financial markets imploded, and the commodity bust three or four years later. We wouldn’t have made money if we weren’t on the short side. In fact, we’re the only fund in Canada that from the day Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy; we were up every single month for the next 20 straight months. That’s through the worst of the worst.

And then stocks got so cheap in March of 2009 that we were sitting around asking, What on earth are we going to short now because there’s value everywhere? It didn’t take long to switch.

TGR: Investing in Canada-listed companies, you must be active in commodities.

PB: The extraction business is a great industry with lots of great opportunities. We think that the cheapest stocks in the world are often listed in Canada, but their operations are abroad.

Take a look at some of our favorite companiesParex Resources Inc. (PXT:TSX.V), which is in Colombia. It’s a good-sized business, a $2.25 billion company, with great growth and great cash flow. It has a relatively cheap valuation, around five or six or seven times EBITDA. It offers huge growth and good management. The stock has been doing great.

And if it were a Canadian operation and not in Colombia, it would trade at probably twice the multiples. Colombia, in fact, is a great place to invest. That’s where the oil is, and that’s where the growth is. So we own Parex.

Red Eagle Mining Corp. (R:TSX; RDEMF:OTCQX; R:BVL) is an absolutely terrific story. It went from drilling the very first exploratory drill hole to test for gold to producing gold in five years. In this industry, that is a record. It did it on budget and on schedule. That’s very impressive. Red Eagle says it is going to announce commercial production sometime in the next few months, but it could be as soon as in the next few weeks. We think it’s going to be a very profitable mine.

We focus on the cash flow. We think Red Eagle trades at a tremendously cheap cash flow multiple. The EV:EBITDA is less than 3. Next year in 2018 it’ll be less than 2, which is just too low for any company anywhere. So it has a great future, and the valuation is very compelling.

One criticism everybody has is when starting up the mine there are lots of risks. We went down and met with the construction people and mining engineers. Plants like this have been built all over Latin America, and it’s actually not that complicated. The plant is up and running. I think there are some 15 similar type plants in Latin America, so it’s not like Red Eagle is reinventing the process.

The tricky part will be to get the ore out of the ground and through the plant. But when you pull it out of the ground and you put it in a plant, it takes three days to figure out how much gold is coming out the other end. Three days, not three months. Red Eagle has very smart people and very good operational people. We think it’s all about the input. Red Eagle is going to ramp up extracting the ore. If the numbers go the way management thinks, this is among the cheapest mining stocks in the world.

TGR: What other extraction companies are at the top of your list?

PB: We do like the gold space. Since Mr. Trump was elected, gold has been quite volatile. At one point, everybody said the stock market is going to rally and gold stocks are not going to do well. Mr. Trump hasn’t addressed anything about the deficits. So when he’s talking about cutting taxes and spending more on infrastructure, this has to be financed one way or other. We don’t see Donald Trump as bad for gold. In fact, we could develop a very bullish case. Since the election gold came off a little bit, down $150 or so, but the gold stocks, a lot of them just fell in half. It was almost like panic selling.

One favorite gold company, in addition to Red Eagle, is Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. (KL:TSX; KLGDF:OTCQX). Kirkland Lake merged with Newmarket Gold Inc. We loved Newmarket, which is in Australia; Kirkland is in Canada. You put the two together, but for some reason lots of shareholders were not happy, so there was this period of uncertainty. The stock fell down to valuations that just don’t match the size of the company. The political risk is minimal. It has multiple mines in Australia and Canada, and good management. It just made no sense that it was trading at dramatic discounts to all the other midsize gold companies.

Our target on Kirkland is much, much higher. I think the stock is good for 30% or 40% upside just to get back to where it should be trading vis-à-vis its competitors. So it’s very compelling. It’s one of our biggest holdings now. Looking at the EV:EBITDA, Kirkland should be trading two full multiples higher. We think $12 to $13/share is going to happen just based on the comps. So that’s a great company.

TGR: Do you want to discuss any other commodities?

“Our favorite zinc producer is Trevali Mining Corp.“

PB: Yes, there is zinc. There’s this whole thesis that we are going to have a global deficit in zinc. People have been talking about that for three years, and it really wasn’t happening. These things take time. But it sure does look like it’s happening now. I think we are in a deficit. And the beauty of all of that is there are very few ways to play that metal on the company side. So it doesn’t take a lot of work: Buy anything related to zinc that’s producing.

Our favorite zinc producer is Trevali Mining Corp. (TV:TSX; TV:BVL; TREVF:OTCQX). It’s the only pure-play zinc opportunity listed in Canada. If you like zinc, play this. It’s not expensive at these levels, but if zinc does have a global shortage, then zinc prices are going to spike. When it spikes, Trevali has to do the same. We own a lot of Trevali; the stock is not expensive. Trevali offers good management and good people, and has two operating mines, one in Canada, one in Peru.
