Form 2290
What is Form2290 (HVUT)?
Form 2290 is a Federal Excise Tax levied on heavy vehicles by the IRS. If you own or operate vehicles with an estimated weight of 55,000 pounds or more, you are liable to pay 2290 tax. This is an annual tax, collected to construct and maintain highways.
Advantages of e-filing form 2290?
If you want to register a truck classified as a heavy highway motor vehicle, then you have to pay Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT and file an IRS Form 2290. Heavy highway motor vehicles are trucks that weigh 55,000 pounds or more. Although all the trucks have to be filed, only the trucks that will be used for 5000 miles or more are taxed.
The IRS usually encourages truckers to file their taxes online, since it’s easier and quicker. If you’re reporting more than 25 trucks, it is advisable that you use an IRS-certified software provider.
Advantages of e-filing Form 2290:
1.       The smooth and efficient functioning of e-filling reduces the preparation and processing mistakes
2.      Access and file your returns from anywhere, anytime using your laptop or computer, even when you’re on the road
3.      Receive your stamped Schedule 1 copy in just a few minutes after the IRS accepts your submissions
4.      You can use the free VIN correction feature that most e-filing service offer to rectify VIN filing mistakes that you might have committed. The new, corrected Schedule 1 copy will be available in minutes
5.      Make any changes to mileage and gross weight if you've committed an error even after you file your Form 2290 online
6.      Save on your postage and avoid standing in queues to file your taxes
Requirements to File Form 2290:
1.       The VIN (Vehicle Information Number) and EIN (Employer Identification Number)
2.      The gross weight of the vehicle
3.      Name and address of the business
The tax period begins from 1st July of the current year and extends till 31st August of the succeeding year. You can receive your stamped Schedule 1 copy for 2018-19 from 1st July 2018. The deadline for submission of your HVUT for tax year 2018-19 is 31st August 2019.
