Simply Sublime: 2018 Alpine A110 driven
Regular readers will note this isn’t the first time in recent weeks that we’ve blogged about the Alpine A110. Last time it was as the subject of our Automotive Reincarnations series, where its similarities to the Lotus Elise SC were highlighted. Today, it’s time to get behind the wheel to find out what this gorgeous two-seat coupe is like to drive.
HERITAGE Before that, the anticipation, which begins with the knowledge that this is not just any new sports car, but one with true heritage. Alpine was founded in 1955, when Jean Rédélé, a Renault dealer and rally driver, took the decision to set up a company to build affordable sports cars. Draped in lightweight bodywork, cars such as the early Alpine A106 looked the part, yet were relatively cheap to build and extremely durable due to the use of proven Renault parts.
It was the A110 of the early 1960s (pictured above) that put Alpine on the world stage, and then through careful development kept it there for more than a decade, taking the World Rally Championship title in 1973. It was in the same year that Groupe Renault, which had always worked closely with Alpine, took control of the company.
With Renault’s budget behind it, more advanced road and racing Alpines arrived, including the 1978 Le Mans winning A442. Later still came the GTA, which was then developed into what would be Alpine’s final car, the A610, production of which ceased in 1995.
And that was that for Alpine until Renault and Caterham struck a deal in 2012 to develop a new bespoke sports car that could carry either Alpine or Caterham branding. When the latter pulled out of the deal only two years later it was left to Renault to see the project through to fruition. The all-new A110 is the result.
ON THE INSIDE Given how Alpine began, it seems perfectly acceptable – inevitable even – to find a scattering of Renault switchgear in the modern-day A110. Does it matter? If you’re coming straight from looking at a Porsche Cayman or Audi TTS then perhaps it does. The reality, however, is that it’s the cost savings provided by these shared components that allow the important bits – the aluminium platform and body, the double wishbone suspension – to be bespoke to the A110.
There’s also little doubt that this car looks truly special. Low and long, it might well be significantly larger than its 1960s namesake, but the connection between the two is clear, and by modern standards the Alpine is still a compact car.
Given its height you need to dip a long way down before falling inside, where you’re greeted by a lightweight Sabelt seat. Ease the door shut and the driving environment pulls off the trick of feeling snug yet roomy, with all but the very tallest drivers having space to stretch out. As you’d hope given the bespoke platform, the driving position is perfect, and while overall material quality and finish is more Renault than Rolls-Royce (and the infotainment system a little fiddly), there’s nothing so disastrously bad that it should put you off.
THE DRIVE Nor should the fact the A110 uses a four-cylinder engine, rather than a more exotic configuration. After all, it’s the character of the thing that matters, and in that sense the Alpine excels.
The 1.8-litre turbocharged unit is a lightly modified version the new Renaultsport Megane engine, but sounds and feels even more exciting. Part of that is no doubt due to the fact it’s mounted directly behind your seat, but it’s also because the Alpine weighs so little – about 1,100kg for the top-spec car we tested. As a result, the 249bhp and 236lb ft of torque available to play with seem just about perfect; acceleration is intense, but not so much so that the car ever feels like a handful to control.
As a guide of just how quick the A110 is, it’ll get from 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds, while with the sports exhaust in its louder setting (achieved by putting the car into Sport or Track mode, which also sharpens the throttle and adds more weight to the steering) the soundtrack is suitably raucous.
Then there’s the gearbox. Admittedly, it’s hard not to think how good the auto-only Alpine would be with a full manual ’box, but if you have to use a paddle shift this is the one to have. Naturally, it’s super smooth in auto mode, and makes the Alpine a doddle to drive in traffic. But what really impresses is how fast it responds in its manual override setting, with changes dropping home the instant you touch the paddle, and each new gear sending a small but determined thump through your seat. Not since first trying a Ferrari 458 Italia can I remember a gearbox making quite such a vivid impression.
Of course, the very best driver’s cars marry a wonderful drivetrain with sublime ride and handling. So it is with the A110, which thanks to its low kerb weight can be relatively softly sprung for a sports car, which not only gives it a perfectly acceptable level of comfort, but also allows it to breathe over bumpy roads.
As a result you can carry speed without fear of being jiggled around or bounced off line, with so much feedback you’re never in doubt about how much grip is available. And that, for reference, always seems to be just about the right amount, for which you can thank careful tuning of chassis and electronics, along with Alpine’s insistence on using that double wishbone setup front and rear.
It’s this sense of flow and agility, along with the messages fed back through the steering and brake pedal, that make driving the A110 such a delightfully delicate experience.
THE VERDICT Alpine sales are off to a strong start (all 1,955 of the Premiere Edition models were accounted for within five days of order books opening), which perhaps isn’t terribly surprising when you understand just how brilliant it is. Interestingly, company insiders report that many examples have been ordered by owners of more exotic sports and supercars, who are presumably buying into the A110 not as a status symbol or for its outright speed, but simply because of the driving experience it offers. Frankly, we can hardly blame them.

WHAT THE ALPINE A110 HAS TO BEAT Porsche Cayman 718 The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, four-cylinder 718 Cayman is about as close a rival as you’ll find to the Alpine, and is equally as brilliant to drive in its own way. Toyota Yaris GRMN – Gazoo Racing turns Toyota tot into a bit of an animal
For  Strong performance, revvy engine, snappy transmission, agile handling Against  Price, it’s sold out, poor driving position, cheap interior Bespoke supermini isn’t cheap (and is sold out), but it delivers raw and undiluted thrills that are missing from many in the class. The unlikely Toyota Yaris is the model that’s been tasked with launching the Gazoo Racing sub-brand in Europe. With a limited run of just 600 cars (400 in Europe and a further 200 restyled versions for the Japanese market) it’s more of a toe in the water exercise than a full-on assault, but its character will set the tone for a raft of go-faster models from the Japanese firm. Aimed squarely at the likes of the Peugeot 208 GTI by Peugeot Sport  and the forthcoming Fiesta ST, the Yaris hot hatch has been developed over two short years by a small team of dedicated car nuts who are keen to remind the world that Toyota still knows how to have fun. To this end it packs a 209bhp supercharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual gearbox, heavily revised suspension and a limited slip differential.  Given the limited time and budget for its development, the Yaris is actually a real hoot. For starters it’s genuinely quick, the mix of fizzy motor and closely stacked ratios making for rapid progress. And while the chassis lacks the ultimate finesse and poise of the 208 GTi, it makes up for that with an infectious appetite for fun. Whereas the Peugeot remains a little aloof until you really dig deep, the Yaris eggs you on from the moment you prod the starter button. Perhaps more amazing still is how Gazoo Racing has turned the roughest of supermini sow’s ears into a really desirable silk purse. It’s not cheap and they’re all sold out, but the Yaris GRMN deserves consideration among the top tier of hot hatches. However, this financial argument is largely academic, because all the UK cars have been sold. And while the Yaris isn’t cheap, it does feel like a special car that’s been engineered by people who understand the thrill of driving. While we eagerly await the Ford Fiesta ST, the Yaris just edges the Peugeot as our favourite pocket-sized funster. Performance and 0-60 time humb the starter button and the 2ZR fires keenly, idling with a note that’s more vocal than the Peugeot 208 GTi’s but a fair bit quieter than an earlier prototype we drove. It’s a joy to work the GRMN’s engine hard. It’s not just a means of getting along the straight sections of a road quickly, but rather something that’s a source of satisfaction itself just to deploy. Clearly, it lacks the low-down punch of some, but the mid-range is surprisingly effective and most of all, it loves to be extended between 5000-7000rpm.. While there is the distant characteristic whine of a supercharger at lower revs, it’s the rush of compressed air and exhaust blare that you hear towards the red line. Crispness of response is its major advantage, complemented by a slick and precise gearchange. > Toyota GT86 review The car’s outright performance figures are competitive rather than startling, with the 0-62mph dash taking a claimed 6.4 seconds – although the fact the sprint geared Yaris won’t crack 60mph in second, requiring a change to third, means this is a pretty impressive effort. Top speed is electronically pegged at 143mph. Engine and gearbox The Yaris GRMN is in many ways defined by its ‘2ZR’ 1.8-litre supercharged engine. It’s a type of powerplant unique in the current hot match market, and while it uses forced induction its throttle response is superior to that of rivals that are all turbocharged. It’s powerful, too, with a peak output of 209bhp and a slightly less impressive 185lb ft maximum torque output developed at a high 4800rpm. Image 9 of 17 Image 9 of 17 Considerable work was needed to fit the big unit in the nose of the Yaris, with many of the challenges revolving around heat management and maintaining emissions compliance. The Magnusson-Eaton supercharger, its intercooler, and the air intake, are packaged as one, slotting down into the front of the engine bay. The exhaust was a particular headache, as there was no provision for the necessary shape and diameter of a performance pipe with the standard Yaris underfloor. The only transmission option is a six-speed manual with a close ratio gearset. This drives the front-wheels through a Torsen limited slip differential. Ride and Handling In normal driving the GRMN is surprisingly undemanding, with a ride that, while possessing an underlying firmness, is far from uncomfortable. There is perhaps a fraction more weight to the steering, but there’s still a slightly artificial manner to the way it self-centres and, in fact, during those first few degrees of lock when you turn into a corner. It’s a glassy, remote kind of sensation, which on cold, wintry roads makes it easy to over-commit on the amount of steering lock required, and therefore overload the front tyres, which clearly don’t have the outright grip of the Michelin Supersports used by the Peugeot 208 GTi. Nevertheless, get through this phase and it’s clear that the nose does stick, and the Yaris GRMN can be thrown down a road with manic enthusiasm, revs flaring, nose gently torque-steering under power but never requiring a firm hand, and all at very high speed.  Image 5 of 17 Image 5 of 17 The GRMN engineers have consciously settled on a chassis tune that’s playful, but also one that strikes a fine balance between interaction, adjustability and confidence-breeding stability. It’s appreciably less tail happy than the 208, but no worse for it.  Perhaps the only real criticism is that the Yaris seems to quickly run out of suspension travel, which is no doubt down to the many limitations of the standard car. It never gets unruly and there’s just enough control at the very limit of compression, but it can sap a little confidence when really attacking a bumpy section of road. A 208 GTi is more controlled in similar conditions, but this poise comes at the expense of some communication at more realistic everyday speeds. MPG and running costs The GRMN is based on a humble Yaris, so you’d expect it to be relatively cheap to run – and based on the claimed figures, you’d be right. At pumps Toyota says you’ll see a return of 37.7mpg, while CO2 emissions run to 170g/km. However, work the supercharged unit hard and the fuel consumption will drop to the mid to high 20s, which isn’t so bad in itself, but when it’s combined with the measly 35-litre tank, you’ll find that the Yaris will barely go 200 miles between refills. Image 13 of 17 Image 13 of 17 The rest of the running costs will be fairly low, with the Toyota’s light weight paying dividends when it comes to brake and tyre wear. Some of the more bespoke parts, such as the Sachs dampers, will be more expensive, but it’s a small price to pay for what is essentially a bespoke, low volume performance car. Interior and tech Inside, the GRMN is almost pure Yaris. There’s a GT86 steering wheel, a RAV4 gearknob (yes, really) and a pair of heavily bolstered high-backed seats, but that’s as far as the modifications go. That means the driving position is too high, there’s not enough wheel adjustment and you’re drowning is a sea of cheap plastics. There’s decent kit, including sat-nav, but the lack of illumination for the window switches and steering wheel controls is a constant frustration after dark. The large touchscreen is fairly easy to use, but the graphics look clunky and the mapping seems about a generation behind that used in superminis from the VW group. Design Visually, the car closely follows the template set by the standard three-door Yaris – cost restraints meant sheet metal changes were out of the question. As a result, the GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nurburgring. I know, it’s obvious isn’t it) gains its visual muscle courtesy of some natty body graphics, a large tailgate spoiler and centre exit exhaust that takes its cues from the brand’s WRC machine. The whole lot is set off by the addition of 17-inch forged BBS alloys. Overall, the GRMN looks surprisingly purposeful. It’s not got the sort of instant presence of, say, a Renault Clio 197/200, but it gives off enough racy vibes to let those in the know that this is no ordinary Toyota shopping trolley. 20 Mar 2018

As with the BMW in Euro-spec, the B58 in the German-market Supra we drove is downrated due to an exhaust particulate filter. In the Z4, the filter chokes a significant 47 hp to result in a mere 335 hp. Perhaps that’s the difference I felt.
As with the Z4, there will not be a manual transmission with this engine (wait, what?), but the ubiquitous ZF eight-speed automatic leads to an electronically controlled clutch-pack differential. Both tuned/mapped by Toyota. The differential is two-way, meaning it’s adjustable on both the traction and drag sides and is steplessly variable from 0 to 100 percent. There’s a launch-control system, and Toyota says that Supra will run 0–60 mph in “less than 5 seconds.” We say that’s conservative and will go out on a limb and predict 4.5 seconds.
Chassis
According to Toyota, the three keys to making a pure sports car are the right combination of wheelbase, track width, and center of gravity. Although we’ve never heard it applied to cars, Toyota is very proud that the Supra’s wheelbase-to-track-width relationship comes tantalizingly close to the golden ratio (1.62). In the Supra it computes to a 1.54 ratio. Our last two Best Driver’s Car winners (Lamborghini Huracan Performante and Ferrari 488 GTB) were closer still, with a 1.59 relationship. There might be something to this. When it comes to the Supra’s center of gravity, Toyota is equally proud to point out that it’s lower than that of the Toyota GT86. That’s impressive since that car has a low-pro flat-four Subaru engine, not a tall I-6. Track Time
As luck would have it, I was in group one at the press drive, which meant my first taste of the new Supra would be on the undulating 2.4-mile, 13-turn Jarama circuit. In Sport mode, the Z4 M40i is quicker, sharper and sportier in these respects, but that’s by design. Both cars are tuned for an effect, and the Supra simply feels more fluid, and in a good way. The first laps, I was feeling my way around and listening to the instructions. On the first flier down the straight (second lap) I pressed the brake pedal, then pressed it further, and further, and my instructor started to say, “More brakes, more brakes” with a hairpin approaching. “Wow, that’s a long pedal and not much feel or bite,” I announce. “Is this a brake-by-wire system?” I ask. He didn’t know, but the four-pot Brembo calipers with large-diameter vented steel discs aren’t the problem. Later in the pits, I learned these are pure hydraulic brakes with stock pads and DOT 4 fluid. Hmm. In the next session, I tried a different car with the same results. I’ll venture it’s the booster tuning. I’d prefer less travel and more bite sooner in the pedal stroke—like the Z4 has.
As confidence and speed increased, I probed the grip in the corners. There’s plenty available from the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35R19 front, 275/35R19 100Y rear, same as the Z4). The turn-in characteristics are excellent, obedient, and confident. About midway ’round a slow corner, however, I find I’m dialing in more and more steering without the front tires making a noise. I didn’t overcook it, and it’s understeer, for sure—but it’s mild, not terminal. If the steering ratio were variable, not by vehicle speed, but by steering input (quicker ratio as you turn the wheel), it could address or mask the problem. That’s likely off the table since the rack must be a done deal. Perhaps looking into the front anti-roll bar diameter or spring rates, or using the differential to drag the inside wheel are still possible before final sign-off. The way the Supra exits corners is perfect. The e-diff puts power down without a fuss, and as the steering unwinds there’s an adjustable amount of slide if you want it. All things considered, there are still ways to make the Supra a better track car, but that’s not necessarily what it was engineered for.
Into the Hills

I could see the driver in front driving the tires off of his car, and I was just waiting, looking for a place to pass. It wasn’t just a horsepower advantage, either. The Supra had what felt like double the grip and half the body roll. I didn’t pass because if I had, I’d lose my swap partner following us.
The next revelation was how utterly quiet the Supra was on the highway. With nearly zero wind noise and barely registered tire noise, the only surfaces that upset it were exceptionally open or coarse pavement. Also, the dampers in Normal mode wiped away almost every surface irregularity. The difference between Normal and Sport modes is palpable, as it should be. This is an excellent road car.

I wish I could tell you how the interior looks, but it remained covered the entire day in black felt with flaps for critical switches. Toyota popped the rear hatch only briefly, but I saw that the largely flat cargo area connects to the rest of the cabin by an open pass-through a la Corvette, which makes the quiet ride even more remarkable. The seats were leather and well bolstered. The Supra has the same steering wheel as the Z4, and the buttons and switches I did see were the exact same as those in the Z4—all of them. What is different is the instrument panel, which isn’t standard-issue analog BMW. It’s more of a digital affair. We’re told that despite using the same iDrive-based infotainment system and display as the Z4, the graphics will be unique to the Supra. Along with the EPS fine tuning, we were told this HMI is one of the last things Toyota is still sorting out.
