Upgrades to the system include improved rear-facing sensors and advanced software algorithms, which help ensure the Cadillac will stay in its lane until there is a safe traffic gap in the desired lane, Cadillac says. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made strong claims for the abilities of the EV automaker’s Autopilot driver-assist systems, Cadillac’s Super Cruise is generally considered by automotive writers to be the most advanced such system. A number of high-profile traffic accidents involving Teslas being operated in Autopilot mode seems to back the superiority of Super Cruise, which has been blamed for no accidents so far.
Cadillac says that since its launch in calendar 2016, about 30 percent of 2018–2021 CT6es have been equipped with Super Cruise, and that those customers engage the system about half the time it is available. Autonomous cars are the modern automotive industry’s holy grail, with practically every manufacturer and supply house feverishly developing the technology needed to build them. But while rivals are still in the laboratory, Cadillac has leapt ahead. In broad terms, Super Cruise is a self-driving technology that allows a vehicle to essentially control itself without requiring the driver’s hands to be on the wheel or feet on the pedals. Astonishingly Good According to Wilson, in one form or another, Cadillac has been developing Super Cruise for about five years. Clearly, Cadillac took its time and did things right because this system is good, astonishingly good. Except for certain challenging situations, you can drive for hours at a stretch and never touch the steering wheel. If conditions are favorable and you’re paying attention, it’s an absolutely seamless and nearly effortless experience. In fact, there were only a handful of instances where I had to intervene, and this was typically in areas that were either under construction or where road improvements had recently been completed. Additionally, when the sun is at a low angle in the morning and evening hours, glare can make it hard for the driver monitor to see your face, but this was a minor issue and only while traversing New Mexico at dusk. Super Cruise isn’t perfect, though it’s probably the best self-driving technology available today. But what about once it’s in the hands of general consumers? Someone is going to figure out how to trick the system. “Nobody is kidding themselves that there’s not going to be incidents,” said Wilson. “But, you know, limiting it for highway-use only, [the] driver-attention system, there’s a number of things that we’ve done to minimize the potential that those incidents are severe.” Furthermore, Wilson noted, “We believe we’ve done the due diligence from a validation and verification standpoint. We’ve driven every mile that we’ve mapped and the vehicle can operate on, we’ve gone back through and done verification testing with instrumented vehicles to understand the car’s capability in those situations under various conditions.” This exhaustive back-end work is evidenced by this technology’s impressive real-world performance. (“Ushr”). All of the products assembled at the Lordstown, Detroit-Hamtramck and Oshawa plants will no longer be produced by the end of next year. As a result, GM will phase out the Chevrolet Cruze compact car and Chevrolet Impala sedan, and the Cadillac CT6. At least one plug-in hybrid vehicle will also be phased out. “We are taking these actions now, while the company and the economy are strong, to stay in front of a fast-changing market and to capitalize on growth opportunities as we push to achieve a vision of a world with zero crashes, zero missions and zero congestion,” GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra said during a call with analysts Monday.
In October, GM offered voluntary buyouts to 18,000 salaried employees in North America who have at least 12 years of experience. GM gave these voluntary buyout employees until November 19 to decide whether to take the buyout offer. The company hasn’t said how many took the offer.
GM has been undergoing a transformation over the past four to five years, getting rid of expensive, money-losing programs like the Opel brand in Europe, and investing more into electrification and autonomous vehicle technology.

See if you can guess some of them. One of the big surprises this week was the reveal of the updated Cadillac CT6. The highlight was anew CT6 V-Sport model with Cadillac's long-awaited 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. In the CT6 V-Sport, it will deliver an estimated 550 horsepower. Another vehicle revealed this week was Volkswagen's redesigned Touareg. Now into its third generation, the VW mid-size SUV has been pushed further upmarket. This is because it fills the flagship role for the VW brand now that the Phaeton is out of production. Yet another redesigned vehicle we saw was a new Kia K900. The Korean automaker looks to have seriously stepped up the quality and design of its new flagship sedan, which arrives in showrooms later this year.

The investment will fund upgrades like new machines and tools at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant’s paint shop, body shop and general assembly area. The plant had been scheduled to close this month, but was spared in the October deal that ended the longest G.M. strike in half a century.
As part of that agreement, G.M. vowed to commit $3 billion to the plant’s overhaul. The company says that promise is met by the investment in upgrades and an additional $800 million for supplier tooling and related projects.
Once in full operation, the plant will employ more than 2,200 people, the company said. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2021 on an all-electric pickup truck, followed by the Cruise Origin, a six-passenger vehicle that was unveiled last week and is intended for use as a self-driving taxi.
Legacy automakers are in a race with one another and a slew of start-ups and technology companies to capture growing demand for electric vehicles while also preparing for the advent of autonomous vehicles. G.M.’s Cruise Origin, for example, faces competition from Uber and Waymo, which is a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet.

In a statement, a G.M. spokesman said the investments announced on Monday were made possible by a state tax credit from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority.
“Over the past decade, the Michigan MEGA has helped enable G.M. to invest more than $10 billion in its Michigan facilities,” the spokesman, Dan Flores, said.
Last week, the Michigan Strategic Fund, an economic development organization, approved changes to that tax credit, which it said had a remaining value of $2.27 billion. The revisions require G.M. to invest at least $3.5 billion in the state over the next decade, including at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant.
G.M. has built more than four million vehicles at Detroit-Hamtramck since it opened in 1985, the company said. The Cadillac CT6 and the Chevrolet Impala are produced at the factory, which will be idled at the end of February for several months for renovations.
