Huge fire wrecks Argentina MotoGP venue

The Termas de Rio Hondo circuit, host of the MotoGP Argentine Grand Prix, has suffered a huge fire which has destroyed most of the paddock and pit area.

The fire started at around 11pm on Friday night with firefighters from Termas de Rio Hondo tackling the blaze along with help from other fire and rescue services from nearby towns and regions.

The cause of the fire is still unknown but it is thought to have devastated the majority of the pits, the press room and the VIP areas but fortunately it has not caused any injuries.

MotoGP had been due to visit the circuit later in the year after its initial scheduled date was postponed to the end of the season after both the Argentine and US GPs were delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Both races currently have no new provisional dates.

“80% of the built-up part of the route has been lost, consumed by fire,” a firefighter told La Nación, who also said the fire could be seen from a long distance away from the circuit.

With the pit area and the upper floors above it, where the press room and VIP areas are located, badly damaged by the flames, firefighters plan to try to prevent the fire from spreading to the circuit’s museum area. Several of the most valuable items in the track museum have already been moved as a precaution while further safety measures have also been taken to protect the rest of the circuit.

“We are working to save the museum, the rest was burned, everything was consumed, it makes you want to cry,” added another firefighter to the Argentine newspaper.

A statement from circuit director Hector Toti Farina confirmed the pit building has been destroyed but the rest of the track complex has been saved from the fire, while also announcing the track is fully insured against fire damage and it plans to start the rebuild as soon as possible.

“Unfortunately the entire pit building was destroyed by the fire that occurred in the late hours at the track, the sector also included the press rooms, race control and VIP lounges,” the circuit statement read. “Both the museum and the control tower at the ends, along with other offices and medical centre had no significant damage.

“The museum will reopen to the public in the next few days. The track has full insurance against fire, so the issue of economic damage is covered in that sense, but it will surely take a long time to rebuild this important area necessary for national and international competitions.

“Thank God, there were no victims to mourn, and we want to thank all those who collaborated in this incident that generated moments of great danger due to the high winds. Many thanks to various fire department staff, police officers, municipal staff and track workers, they did everything they could to prevent further damage. We will work from now on to do everything possible to meet the schedules we have planned, including the MotoGP in November.”

Termas de Rio Hondo has hosted the Argentina MotoGP event since 2014, albeit with the 2020 race cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. The circuit, built in 2007 and redeveloped in 2012, has also hosted the World Touring Car Championship, with the most recent event taking place in 2016.

Damita Jo has some new music coming down the pipeline AND a new tour, so gather your coins. There was drama in 2016 when she kept delaying/postponing her "Unbreakable World Tour." Then, she decided she would delay the tour again to "start a family" and welcomed a baby boy in January 2017. In April 2017, she split from her billionaire BAE Wissam Al Mana. There was drama following their split, so she was busy dealing with that. In September 2017, she hit the road for her "State of the World Tour."

Now, she’s ready to give her fans another tour. 

The "Rhythm Nation" singer will be hitting the road this summer to bring her new “Black Diamond World Tour” to the masses. The tour will feature music from Janet’s coming alum titled, Black Diamond, as well as “a special performance of Rhythm Nation 1814,” according to a press release.

The 53-year-old entertainer will kick off her tour in June in Miami, Florida. She’ll hit major cities like Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles before wrapping up the tour in August in Tacoma, Washington.

The five-time Grammy winner - who was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year - appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” where she talked about her album’s title and how she came up with it.

”I’ve come to realize in recent years that I’m incredibly strong. I see myself as this rock,” she said.

New story in Politics from Time: Michael Cohen Has Postponed His House Testimony, Citing Threats from President Trump and Rudy Giuliani

(Bloomberg) — Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, has postponed his testimony to Congress citing concerns for his family’s safety.

Cohen’s family, including his wife, children and in-laws, encouraged him to postpone the appearance after calls by Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani to investigate Cohen’s father-in-law, according to Cohen’s lawyer and spokesman Lanny Davis.

“The president has terrorized someone who wanted to tell the truth before Congress,” Davis said.

Cohen was scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee in a public hearing on Feb. 7.

Trump, who has called Cohen a liar and “rat,” said in a tweet on Jan. 18 that Cohen is “Lying to reduce his jail time! Watch father-in-law!”

In a Fox News interview last month, Trump said Cohen’s father-in-law “is a very rich guy, I hear.” Referring to Cohen, the president asked, “Did he make a deal to keep his father-in-law out? Did he make a deal to keep his wife, who supposedly, maybe I’m wrong, but you can check it, did he make keep — make a deal to keep his wife out of trouble?”

Cohen has pleaded guilty to nine felonies and is due to turn himself in on March 6 to begin serving a three-year prison sentence.

He has said Trump directed him to break campaign finance laws by paying hush-money payoffs to two women and and that he lied to Congress to hide that negotiations to build a Trump tower in Moscow continued well into the 2016 presidential campaign.

While the House committee would have to steer clear of issues potentially still under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in an open hearing, leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee have said they want to hear from Cohen separately in a closed session.

Cohen friend Donny Deutsch, an advertising executive, said that Cohen has been increasingly worried that Trump would retaliate against him by further attacking his family if he testified.

“He was panicked. He was like ‘he’s going after my father-in-law. Are my children next?’” Deutsch said on MSNBC on Jan. 18. Deutsch said Cohen told him “you have no idea what this man is capable of.”
