I drive a 2012 Subaru Forester. Had it since I was 18 and it is the best fucking vehicle ever. Bought at auction for $2000 because it didn’t run, replaced the battery and it has been an angel of a vehicle since. PERFECT vehicle. Never fails me. Handles so well. Perfect size. Not expensive enough to give a fuck about driving on gravel country roads, hitting curbs, scraping it on tree branches. Only times it hasn’t started have been completely my fault for leaving the light on.

Growing up my friend’s grandparents drove a 70s model station they had purchased new and owned for 40 years. Not because they couldn’t afford a new car, just because they liked that one. They’d drive it up to North Carolina from their retirement condo in Florida. And it would embarrass THE HELL out of my friend’s WASP-y mother. That will be me and my 2012 Subaru Forester, God willing I don’t total it and the engine block doesn’t crack or something.

Anyway, my dad bought my stepsister a newer model Subaru Outback at auction and I think it pissed my mom off that he has his stepdaughter in a bigger, nicer, newer Subaru. She keeps telling me to upgrade my car, “ Wouldn’t it be nice to have leather seats instead of fabric?” “Wouldn’t you like a built in GPS?” “Wouldn’t you like a car that didn’t have the previous owner’s doodoo stains on the seat?” like NO! I would not! My first vehicle was a new Mini Cooper (also purchased at auction) and it was a lemon. There was always something terribly wrong with it. It sucked. My Subaru is the first vehicle I’ve ever seen that NEVER has problems. I’m keeping it forever.

the head gasket issue was prevalent on the EJ25 engines, typically model year (MY) 1998-2012 or so. the issue is partially due to the design of the head bolts and partially due to the single layer material and design of the head gaskets.

just because the head gasket has been replaced does not ensure that it will not fail again. aftermarket brands vary in quality control and the job may not have been done correctly, Subaru head gasket jobs are easy to screw up. typically, head gasket failure in Subarus occur between 80-160k miles, most usually 100-140k. if it's past that point, likely it's already been changed, but not guaranteed. as long as the head gasket has been changed properly, it likely will last at least 100-150k miles, if it fails at all. my mother replaced the head gasket in a 2000 outback at 120k and it's now at 320k, no issues so far.

in the later years of the EJ25 engines, design changes were made that decreased the likelihood, but it was still not uncommon for them to occur.

Starting in MY 2011, Subaru switched to the FB series of engines, which resolved the head gasket issues and also replaced the timing belt with a chain. These engines were well known for excessive oil consumption leading to burnt exhaust valves, lasting until MY 2014. I am not certain of the reliability of the 2014 and beyond cars, but I've not heard bad things.

however, if you can get yourself a Subaru with a EJ22, they are known for being bulletproof and do not have the head gasket issues. I had one in a '96 Impreza wagon and it was a beautiful little thing, 260k miles and ran like a top.

bonus fun fact: head gasket failure usually presents one of four ways. oil seepage, oil burning, coolant burning, or oil and coolant mixing.

1. if the oil seeps, it will leak out from under the car, on th seam between the heads and the block on the bottom of either side of the engine.

2. burning oil will make blue smoke, though it may also be caused by a number of other problems, such as piston ring failure (not unheard of on high-mile engines).

3. burning coolant will cause a lot (and I mean a lot) of white smoke. you'll think your car has a smoke machine stuffed up its ass. this can also cause overheating, as the exhaust gasses will get into the cooling system and make it very hot.

4. oil and coolant mixing will make a milky, mayonnaise like substance in either the oil or coolant, or both. this is not fun mayo, nor is it an instrument. unless you mean an instrument of your car's imminent death, in which case yes. it is.

thoughts on the funky little 2000’s impreza outback sports? im looking into buying one >:3 its been sitting in a parking lot for ~6 months and supposedly just needs solenoids and fluids (and probably a battery, though the thing looks brand new so im gonna try and charge it first) to get running.

oh those are solid, late 90s through early 2000s subarus are the best ones imo. if it’s been sitting just check all the seals and gaskets, those can get stiff or break down a bit if they sit. subarus are known for blowing head gaskets so one that’s been sitting should almost certainly have an eye kept on it. but i doubt six months is long enough to do sizeable damage, i’ve had a car sit that long and start right up no problem (granted it was a corolla). assuming everything’s good have fun with your new subaru!
