Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#220-211)
#220: Yiannis Dimitras -- Feggari Kalokerino (Greece 1981)
"ÎšÎżÎŻÏ„Î± Ï„ÎżÎœ ÎÏÎ·ÎŒÎż ÎłÏ…Î±Î»ÏŒ ÎŁÎżÏ… ψÎčÎžÏ…ÏÎŻÎ¶Ï‰ σ’ Î±ÎłÎ±Ï€ÏŽ ΀ώρα Ξα Ï‡Ï„ÎŻÏƒÏ‰ ΔÎșÎșλησÎčÎŹ ΓÎčα της Î±ÎłÎŹÏ€Î·Ï‚ τα Ï„ÏÎ”Î»ÎŹ παÎčÎŽÎčÎŹ" "Look at the desolate seashore I whisper you “I love you” Now I’ll build a church For the crazy children of love" The opening shot, the rose on the piano, set the stage for such a romantic journey under the summer moon. And the soundscape created through the piano and instrumental throw us into this endearing scene, one which is also tinged with melancholy. Feggari Kalokerino is not only an ode to this beauty, but also an admission of craziness for falling in love. With such pretty lyrics, one can't help but get enveloped in this pretty world, where everything is so beautiful. The combination of Yiannis' singing and the woman's piano playing is also quite cute, albeit with some...interesting undertones to it. Either way, it's classical yet timeless.

#219: Liliane Saint-Pierre -- Soldiers of Love (Belgium 1987)
“Neem elkaars handen Smeed nou die banden toe Hoor je die verre kreet? Geen mens vraagt dat leed” “Take each other’s hands Come on, weld those bonds Do you hear that distant scream? Nobody asks for that suffering” Top ten opening themes of anime, haha. It also helps that "Soldiers of Love" is the English translation for the song "Ai no Senshi" from Sailor Moon (which I've listened to many times but haven't gotten that far into the anime...). That said, Soldiers of Love packs a punch with the instrumentation and the high intensity of the melody. The lyrics are a powerful battle cry, albeit one which advocates for peace amongst people. There’s so much energy and determination in Belgium’s host entry, one would prepare themselves for battle for a good cause. Liliane really delivers this earnestly and with determination, though sometimes the military-style get-up stands out to me the most when I watch it again. Though those two guitarists turning their ends as if they were firing guns is a cool thing to behold.
It's one of the host entries that is better than the song which one it for the country, which is something because J'aime la vie is considered a fan favorite.
Personal ranking: 6th/22 Actual ranking: 11th/22 in Brussels
#218: Beth -- Dime (Spain 2003)
"CuĂĄntas veces te llamĂ© en la noche CuĂĄntas veces te busquĂ© Por mis recuerdos yo vuelvo Y no pierdo la fe" "How many times did I call you in the night? How many times did I look for you? I return for my memories And I don’t lose faith" For some reason, Dime reminds me of "Die for You" from two years earlier--both feature modern pop bops with ethnic influences, both imploring about the state of a relationship (while they both want to make it wor. And they're both in the same key! At the same time, Dime holds its own as one of the strongest 2000s entries from Spain. They had similar flamenco/Latin inspired entries in 2001 and 2004, which were highlights in rather mediocre years because of their uniqueness overall. But the guitar flourishes here work well with the dance beat, and it provides its own fun.
Personal ranking: 3rd/26 Actual ranking: 8th/26 in Riga
#217: Svala -- Paper (Iceland 2017)
“Drawing every bit of my truth Colour me in with your blue” I didn’t actually pay attention to this song in the follow-up to the 2017 contest. I also didn’t watch the semi-finals, which could’ve led to me neglecting the song entirely otherwise, especially I've heard a lot about Blackbird during that time. However, the summer after the contest, I discovered the song and listened to it. And I liked it! (And then I got hooked with Svala's other songs through her different groups) I was interested particularly in the lyrics, which discussed a fight between one’s mental demons and anxiety. I like the English version more than the Icelandic one; the latter is a bit more optimistic on winning against the battle whereas the former really takes the issue seriously. The production, while a bit staid, added to the feeling of helplessness with its electronic coldness. The staging also tries to incorporate this, though it didn't work in making it stand out. (I did like Svala's cape and makeup, though!) While I do love "Hear them Calling" a lot, I had a more interesting journey with Paper--it grew until it became something I highly enjoyed. Personal ranking: 6th/42 Actual ranking: DNQ -- 15th in the first semi-final in Kyiv
#216: Live Report -- Why Do I Always Get it Wrong? (United Kingdom 1989)
“You can do what you want to do now...” Honestly, this has to be one of my favorite British entries ever. While "Go" from the previous year gets a lot of acclaim because of its songwriting and Scott's performance (along with how it ended up second in the end), "Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?" is better on how it envelops a mood and could actually be found from this era (though it sadly didn't do too well commercially afterwards, sigh)
Whenever I do something wrong, or self-hate, this is the song I turn to a lot. The synthesizers drew me in—it fit well with the late 1980s-early 1990s sound elsewhere. It's also helped that Celine performed "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" earlier in the contest, which piqued my interest. And while Ray’s ponytail was a choice, it didn’t distract from how he delivered the song.
Despite getting more 12-points, it ended up losing to Yugoslavia by just six points that year. While not my favorite that year, I think it was the better one of the top three; it equally reflects the times and holds up!
Personal and actual ranking: 2nd/22 in Lausanne
#215: Tommy Nilsson -- En Dag (Sweden 1989)
“En dag vi alla förstĂ„r, En dag, nĂ€r stillheten rĂ„r, En dag jag finner din hand, NĂ€r vĂ€garna möts förstĂ„r vi varann,” “One day, we all understand, One day, when silence rules One day, I find your hand When our roads meet, we will understand each other” My two favorites from 1989 are sonically different, diverging between despair and hope. I listen to "Why Do I Always Get it Wrong" a bit more, but "En Dag' would stand out for me in a few different ways, more from being just the optimistic song of the two.
The intro features really good brass, which leads way to the fun instrumental. I like how it builds, and Tommy’s interplay with the backing vocalists is incredibly strong. You get a sense of energy from the both of them as they send the song to new heights.
Basically, it's just glorious!
Personal ranking: 1st/22 Actual ranking: 4th/22 in Lausanne
Final Impressions of 1989: It's a pretty fine year, both in songs in production. There are a number of good songs there, though not many classics which hold out in the long-term (except for Vi maler byen rĂžd, which became famous in Denmark and even became the premise of a musical!). Highlights include an overactive conductor from Turkey, two children, and an awesome interval act involving a crossbow!
#214: Bang -- Stop (Greece 1987)
“ΌτÎč ÎșÎŹÎœÎ”Îčς ÎłÎčα ΎόΟα ÎșαÎč Î»Î”Ï†Ï„ÎŹ ΔΔς τÎč Ï‡ÎŹÎœÎ”Îčς, Î±Î»Î»ÎżÏ Î”ÎŻÎœÎ±Îč η Ï‡Î±ÏÎŹâ€
“Whatever you do is for fame and money See what you are missing, joy is somewhere else”
I’ve heard this song compared to Wham’s output, especially with its vintage rock-n-roll sound (wake me up before you go go). This doesn’t make it any less bad, with its charming tone and thoughtful lyrics about how a girl who only wants material goods should stop chasing them.
(This is another reason why sometimes, the original-language version is better that any other one--the English version to this song has goes on a completely different tangent)
The performance also falls into vintage aesthetics, with the suits for both Thanos and Vassilis and sock-hop style dresses for the backing vocalists. It's really cute, and the way they dance fits the scene.
On another note, apparently Greeks saw this as a favorite at the time, can someone verify that?
Personal ranking: 5th/22 Actual ranking: 10th/22 in Brussels
#213: Guy Bonnet -- Marie-Blanche (France 1970)
“Nous sommes lĂ  dans une douce quiĂ©tude Nous avons mis fin Ă  notre solitude Nos corps apprennent de tendres habitudes Et Marie-Blanche est Ă  moi”
“We’re there in a soft stillness We’ve put an end to our loneliness Our bodies learn tender habits And Marie-Blanche is mine”
By 1970, chanson was on its way out; in its place was folk, rock-n-roll (spearheaded in France by Johnny Halladay, who has a great French version of "House of the Rising Sun"), and psychadelia. Within France itself, some of the #1 singles from that year include Comme j'ai toujours envie d'aimer, Let It Be, and Bridge over Troubled Water (a total masterpiece, I tell you).
So, what does one make of Marie-Blanche, in this case?
It's a really sweet love poem, in which Guy declares his love for the girl. and conveys a particularly cute scene. Whenever I listen to this, I envision two lovers cuddling inside while watching the snow fall during the winter. There's a sense of magic and serenity in all this, and the lyrics match the pretty piano melody.
Basically, hits are important to keep the contest alive. But songs like Marie Blanche can pull on the feels in the right ways.
Personal ranking: 2nd/12 Actual ranking: =4th/12 in Amsterdam
#212: Justyna -- Sama (Poland 1995)
“I czuƂa się tak marnie PoczuƂa się tak marnie Jakby Bóg, dobry Bóg Nie lubiƂ pcheƂ..”
“And I feel poor Feeling so poor As if God, the good God Didn’t love little fleas...”
If 1994’s To nie ja represented something classic and hopeful, 1995’s Sama takes it and reverses it. (And in the grand Eurovision timeline, they're only separated by the last song of 1994, Je suis un vrai garcon from France) Instead of a young woman filled with life and singing a decent ballad, we have another one pondering herself, all alone, with nobody to help her.
Also, this is more of an acquired taste with its out-of-tune recordings and Justyna’s scream. But it doesn’t feel out of place within the 1990s, with its alternative influences and production, and I like Sama a lot for that!
Unfortunately, it also caused it to do substantially worse, which is simultaneously explainable and baffling. A good result would've made waves for future Eurovision entries; the 1990s are my favorite decade, but they did misalign quite a bit from the mainstream.
Personal ranking: 7th/23 Actual ranking: 18th/23 in Dublin
#211: The Shadows -- Let Me Be the One (United Kingdom 1975)
"You and I could have an affair/make sweet music, go anywhere"
Isn't this lyric really charming? I couldn't help but have a little giggle because of it; there's a sense of naughtiness (especially with choosing "affair"; are they trying to something illicit?) underneath it.
That said, The Shadows are mainly known for their instrumental rock, but Let Me Be the One has a neat melody line. The rock-n-roll vibe, which could be released within that decade, is light but lovely, and added a jolt of uniqueness to the otherwise poppy contest up to that point. The flubbed line in the beginning ("let me be the one who literally holds you tight", haha) adds to the whole thing, but they were able to carry on, nevertheless.
And while I like all the 1970s winners to some extent, I would switch out "Ding-a-Dong" for Let Me Be the One in terms of winners vs. runners-up; like with Sama, it could've changed the contest in a positive way.

“I’m a meat and two veg kinda fella,” says Kenneth Branagh. “I love my fish and chips, and my English breakfast, and I like my football and horse racing – my dad loved the horses.” His tastes, he admits, such as his signature dessert recipe for melted Mars bar over vanilla ice cream, were formed in his working-class childhood.
For the past four decades, this son of a joiner from Belfast has been living cheek by jowl with that other great scion of the lower classes – William Shakespeare. Ever since Branagh became a stage and film star playing Henry V in the Eighties, he’s been directing Shakespeare’s works, adapting them, playing many of his great characters. Now, at 58, he is assuming the bald pate, sharp nose and very pointed beard of the playwright himself, in the self-directed All Is True.
It’s an unexpectedly moving portrait. Branagh’s Will is entering his 50s, and retiring from London to Stratford-upon-Avon, where he had long owned a house, and where at 18, he had married Anne Hathaway, a 26-year-old already pregnant with their child. It’s 1613, the Globe Theatre has burned down, and the playwright is still grieving the death of his only son, Hamnet, many years earlier.
“For me, it was a sort of time travel,” says Branagh, whose enduring boyishness hides the fact that he is eight years older than the Shakespeare we meet in the film. (The playwright died in 1616, at the age of 52.) Branagh’s Shakespeare is stiff of bearing; Branagh isn’t. He’s playful while having his photograph taken in the London hotel where we meet, and his comfortable clothes – knitwear – mirror a softness in his tone and manner. It masks a seriousness that shows itself often when he speaks.
After all these years exploring Shakespeare’s work, does the think he has a feel for the man? “I have a sense of preoccupations that repeat themselves,” he says. “They came together when I played Leontes in The Winter’s Tale a couple of years ago, because it did feel like a play from a man at the end of his professional life, maybe in the evening of his life – there was such a longing in it for this lost child, such an ache for the reunification of a family, that it seemed to add up with all sorts of longings in the plays, even in the comedies.”
The grief for Hamnet in All Is True is so acute that, set against the way Will yearns for a male heir, and his complicated relationship with his daughters, Susanna and Judith (Hamnet’s twin), it makes you wonder whether Branagh has been contemplating his own mortality. Does he wish that he had had children?
“Didn’t happen,” he shrugs. “It doesn’t seem to me to be valuable to be wishing and hoping for things that don’t appear to have been on your dance card. I go with what we have. I start with, are you healthy, do you have some family, do you have some friends? Anything north of that’s terrific.”
Since 2003, Branagh has been married to art director Lindsay Brunnock. Before that, of course, he was married to Emma Thompson – a celebrity coupling that was so ubiquitous between 1989 and 1994 that they were referred to simply as “Ken and Em”. They acted in a series of Branagh’s films together, such as the history-repeats-itself thriller Dead Again (1991), the rather precious paean to privilege, Peter’s Friends (1992), and a very winning Much Ado About Nothing (1993), before the partnership ended with Branagh’s affair with Helena Bonham Carter. Does he think he and Thompson will ever work together again? “I don’t know,” he says. Would he like to? “She’s a terrific talent, so who knows?”
Branagh is clearly not keen to talk about his personal life, however much of it is already in the public arena. Yet so little is known of Shakespeare’s life that All Is True must make a series of guesses to fill the void. (The script is written by Ben Elton, who has already treated the subject as comedy in Upstart Crow.) But the element most likely to raise eyebrows is the casting of Judi Dench as Hathaway. Dench is 84. It’s very unusual to cast a woman 26 years older than her leading man, isn’t it? “Is she 26 years [older]?” says Branagh, surprised. “Really?” I nod – does he think audiences will balk at that?
“I don’t think so. I was aware that for the past 100 years of cinema that age gap has usually been the other way round. If it felt it was going to kill the story, I would have been terrified; for some maybe it will, but for me, not at all. She’s unique and to have that chance with one of the greatest living actors, the age thing didn’t come into it.”
Is it an example of “age-blind casting”? “Yeah, I guess so. She was the right person for the role.” The film seems to suggest that Hathaway and Shakespeare reunite sexually, too. I wonder if, as a director, he considered having a physical scene between them? “No, it didn’t seem appropriate for this. I wouldn’t have balked at it if it had seemed right, very much not.”
He also shares a seven-minute scene with Ian McKellen, who plays the Earl of Southampton, to whom Shakespeare famously dedicated two poems. It evolves into a duel between heavyweight Shakespeareans when both recite Sonnet 29 (“When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes”). “I practised for that scene as I’ve never practised before,” Branagh admits, explaining that he went to see McKellen perform as Lear last year, and rehearsed with him backstage. “I found that pretty intimidating
You’ve got to be up pretty early in the morning to keep up with Dench, but with him
”
It’s one of the pivotal moments of the film, which clearly suggests that the Bard was in love with a man. Is that an unavoidable conclusion from the Sonnets, four-fifths of which are addressed to a “fair youth”? “I think it’s certainly unavoidable not to consider it very strongly,” Branagh says. Is there room for doubt that Shakespeare preferred men? He laughs. He’s weighing his words carefully. “I think it’s a strong possibility.”
Branagh does this a lot, studiedly avoiding sound-bites. Asked if he believes Shakespeare was indeed the author of the plays, he decides: “The other theories are brilliant speculations, but there has been no winning piece of evidence. In the current state of knowledge, I would follow the man from Stratford.”
Branagh’s family moved from Belfast to Reading to escape the Troubles when he was nine. As a boy from the sticks, who arrived at Rada in the late Seventies, then went on to act, direct and try his hand as a playwright, had he wanted to actually be Shakespeare?
It’s impossible to imagine it, he says. He just felt “so at home and happy telling stories in the theatre to a live audience, the itinerant nature of it. Those that were ahead of me – whether it was Shakespeare or actors of the past or directors – I was inspired by them.”
Branagh’s career began in a blaze of glory. But while his stage reputation continued to grow, in film at least there was a mid-period lull. His Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1995) was panned; his run of big-screen Shakespeare adaptations stuttered with the widely derided song-and-dance version of Love’s Labour’s Lost (2000), and even when he returned with a striking As You Like It (2006) set in 19th-century Japan, around the same time as The Magic Flute (2006) and Sleuth (2007), all three “received a pretty rough time”, he says. Yet he’s sanguine about criticism. “Sometimes people don’t like ’em. It’s as simple as that. I put the same feeling into all of them.”
He has always had a phenomenal approach to work that seems to border on mania. Since he was 29, he has been using meditation to ensure that he doesn’t yo-yo between frantic activity – “I wouldn’t characterise it as manic, but I would say, yes, extremely hectic at times” – and its corresponding depressive state.
“I knew I had to work quite hard at all those things that would try to allow you some peace amid the noise and haste. I like to read about spiritual matters and I’ve developed the meditation since then to try to find the way to turn down the noise. When the engine’s revving really high, I think you have to be careful.”
A decade ago, Branagh made the decision to leave the West End production of Hamlet he had been about to direct, starring Jude Law, to take up the reins of Thor (2011) for Marvel. It was a change of direction that opened the door to a new phase in his career, as a director of blockbuster movies. He won’t accept the charge that comic-book films have killed grown-up cinema – “Well I’ve just made a grown-up film, I’d say” – and mounts a strong defence.
“In the best hands you get stories that involve spectacle and, in some cases, depth or wit or creative imagination that allows for a really cinematic experience, they provide stories that make you want to go to the pictures. They ain’t killing grown-up movies.”
His hit 2015 Cinderella, starring Lily James and Richard Madden, will be followed this summer by a lavish Disney adaptation of Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer’s 2001 novel about a boy genius who discovers the fairy world beneath our feet. Blockbusters bring their own set of pressures. Does he fear that if Artemis Fowl bombs, that avenue closes? “No, it doesn’t feel that way, although perhaps it is that way,” Branagh says. “I think if it felt like that it would be quite hard to do the work, but I’ve certainly been in situations where if a movie doesn’t work you’re really aware of the cold winds that blow around you for a while. It’s a commercial business and these are big investments.”
What would he do if an invitation to take on the Bond franchise came his way? “I have absolutely no idea,” he says. “I have Artemis Fowl to finish and I hope we get to make Death on the Nile [the second of his Agatha Christie adaptations, after Murder on the Orient Express, in which he stars as Poirot] towards the end of the year. Ask me the Bond question a picture or so from now.” He leans back.
“I should be so lucky.”
There will be a preview screening of 'All is True' followed by a Q&A with Kenneth Branagh at VUE cinema in Leicester Square on Wednesday 6th February, from 6.30pm.

Stonehenge, one of the biggest mysteries of all time...
Hi all and welcome to Spirit's blog. Today I would like to explore the origins of Stonehenge. I wrote a post recently about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, to be completely honest I was disappointed that Stonehenge was not included. So after wondering and wondering I sought to find the truth, or as much of it as can be found. So now I give you the origins of Stonehenge, to the best of our knowledge.
Stonehenge dimensions and location
Stonehenge is an ancient monument in Wiltshire, England. This circular monument is constructed using large man made, stones that are placed vertically or "standing stones". The standing stones in this structure measure 13' high, 7' wide and weigh about 25 tons. Archaeologists have dated Stonehenge to roughly 3000 B.C. to 2000 B.C.
Stage 1 Construction
The exploration of Stonehenge confirms that it was created in three phases, the following is stage 1. Archaeologists believe Stonehenge started as a circular bank, with a ditch inside. The entire structure is enclosed by Seaford Chalk, a limestone based chalk like substance that was believed to be used in the late Cretaceous period. The structure's diameter was 360 feet in diameter. It also had a large opening as an entrance to the northeast and a small entrance to the south. The bones of deer and oxen were found inside the center of the structure also some tools of the time period (the late Cretaceous). On the outer circumference of this structure is 56 holes, each about 1 meter in diameter. The purpose of these holes is still unknown, some believe it many be astronomical in nature. The 2013 excavation of these holes found bone pieces from 56 individual people, buried in these holes. This leads others in the community to believe that this was a cremation or burial ground. Analysis of the bones confirms half to be male and the other half to be female, some were of children.
Stage 2 Construction
Stage 2 building of Stonehenge is no longer visible, but is found in the form of post-holes. There is belief that a wooden structure was inside the original circle of stage 1. These holes have been dated back to the third millennium B.C. There is evidence that there were wooden column like structures that stood at the northeast entrance and connected to the southern entrance. These holes are thought to be for architectural purpose, not burial, due to the fact that they measure 16 inches in diameter. The wide chalk lined holes created in the first stage were theorized to not have the intention of cremation or burial until roughly 2000 B.C. Their original purpose is still much debated question in the archaeological community.
Stage 3 Construction
Stage 3 of Stonehenge creation started circa 2600 B.C. The original builders of this ancient structure, seem to have abandoned the idea of using wood. Instead they created a line of large holes parallel to each other, through the center of the original structure. These holes held up to 80 standing stones, this leads explorers to believe it may be a ring within a ring. The stones that remained standing have been examined and are believed to be "blue stones". These stones are made of the igneous rock, dolerite, that is found 150 miles away in Wales. The idea is that the builders carried these massive stones that entire distance. There is also a theory that these stones were brought closer to Stonehenge by the melting of the Irish Sea Glacier, in the end of the Ice Age. These stones are said to weigh roughly 2 tons each, if they were moved by man, they did so by using a series of logs to roll under the stones. That was the method of moving heavy objects utilized in nearby China, India and Japan.
Resurrection
Another part of stage 3 consisted of them bringing over 30 larger stones. These stones are traced to an area about 25 miles north of Stonehenge. These stones were carved with a mortise and tenon, being a hole for another material to set in and a horizontal material to sit in opposing holes. The way they are depicted in the picture above. They also used a tongue and groove method like in wood working. Thirty stones were placed in a 108 foot, diameter circle and 30 were placed horizontally in the carved holes connecting them. Each standing stone measured roughly 25 tons. The horizontal stones measure 10 feet long, 1 meter wide, 2.6 feet thick and 16 feet of the ground. After it's completion, it was reconstructed a few times by the people of the Bronze Age, and possibly the Saxons.
Possible connection to other structures like it
Stonehenge was built by a civilization that was seems to have been lost, no written record has ever been found about it. The methods of it's creation are undocumented, the purpose of such a place are not recorded either. There is speculation that it was connected to another similar structure in near the Avon river. It has been noted that Stonehenge was built in a way that it would face the rising sunset in the winter solstice and away from the sun in the summer solstice.
Speculation as to the Purpose of Stonehenge
The speculation as to the purpose of this site ranges from religious ceremonies, to burial and cremation grounds, to astronomical viewings. The newest of theories is that Stonehenge was a place of healing. That would explain the burials and traumas found on the bones therein. Another new theory is that Stonehenge served more than one purpose, such as worship, healing, burial all in one. The final new theory is that Stonehenge was the place of the dead and the structures near the Avon river were the place of the living.
Story of Merlin and Stonehenge
There are stories that Stonehenge was created by Merlin the wizard, in the time of King Arthur. This story depicts the stones as healing stones. In the folktale the successor to King Arthur, King Aurelius Ambrosius needed a burial plot for 3000 knights to be buried in honor. Merlin suggested Stonehenge as their final resting place. The king sends 15000 knights, Uther Pendragon, and Merlin to retrieve the stones. They were believed at that time to be in nearby Ireland, 7000 knights died trying to move this massive structure to no avail. Then Merlin used skill and tools and moved it to it's current location. The story claims that Aurelius Ambrosius, Uther Pendragon and Constantine III, were all laid to rest here.
Story of an Ambush at this Site
Another story claims that the Saxons and the Britons in 472 were invited to a feast. Shortly after their arrival the King Hengist, orders his warriors to draw their weapons, killing 420 of the guest's army. Out of regret King Hengist ordered the building of Stonehenge on the site of the ambush, to show remorse.
Conclusion
Well to wrap this up, possibly millions of years, reconstructions and stories later, Stonehenge still remains a mystery. Scientists of all different types have examined the area, the bones, and the architecture of Stonehenge, and we are still no closer to the purpose of Stonehenge. Perhaps one day we will understand the workings of our ancient world and it's people. Until then... Blessed be.

 Best work Power and team

A Look At Park-Like Estates For About $15 Million In Los Angeles, France And Vail Valley
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/a-look-at-park-like-estates-for-about-15-million-in-los-angeles-france-and-vail-valley/
A Look At Park-Like Estates For About $15 Million In Los Angeles, France And Vail Valley
When it comes to these homes, it’s all about location, location, location.
From a modern tour de force in Los Angeles to a sprawling villa in southeastern France, there’s no shortage of scenery with these world-class properties. Here’s a closer look at what about $15 million buys in the Bel-Air, Mougins and Vail Valley housing markets.
Avon, Colorado
Designed by architect Robert Ziegelman, the contemporary mountain retreat in Avon, Colo., takes in
[] sprawling mountain and tree-top views.
Located a few miles west of Vail in Avon, the gated community of Mountain Star is a low-density, 1,300-acre enclave of 90 residences. Rolling meadows, sage hills and forested glades create a scenic backdrop for the community. Cross-country trails throughout provide residents with access to the mountain setting they call home.
The large-lot estates that comprise the community are cared for by a full-time, on-site caretaker. A “Ranch Central” building serves as a communal space for neighborhood gatherings.
This contemporary mansion bordering U.S. Forest Service lands was designed by architect Robert Ziegelman and built in 2000.
Price: $14.995 million
Size: 10,250 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,463
Inside: To navigate community restrictions, Ziegelman used smaller framed panes of glass to create large expanses that bring in mountain and forest views in nearly every direction. The living space is divided between three separate pavilions connected by clusters of large pillars.
In the main pavilion, the open-concept space is anchored by a giant half-circle fireplace. The primary bedroom suite, which has its own kitchen and dining area, occupies another pavilion. The third contains guest quarters and a heated garage. The three pavilions combine to offer six bedrooms, four full bathrooms, three Ÿ bathrooms and two half baths.
Outdoor living space: Decking extends from the second level to create additional space outdoors. Locally sourced stone features prominently in the home’s exterior design. Set on more than four acres, the property also has a dining patio and an in-ground spa — the latter being a welcome addition on cold winter nights.

Bel-Air, Los Angeles
The striking architectural home, built in 1971 for basketball great Wilt Chamberlain, sits on a
[] 2-plus-acre lot overlooking Stone Canyon Reservoir.
Stone Canyon Reservoir and the areas surrounding it are home to some of the most stunning views in not only Bel-Air but also the greater Los Angeles area. Known for its range of architecture, properties in this section of Bel-Air range from modern spec developments to classic Midcentury Modern residences to grand Revival-style estates of the early 1900s.
This modernist masterpiece was designed by David Tenneson Rich for basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain. The architect combed the Santa Monica Mountains by helicopter to find the two-plus-acre site, a former cold war missile location, for Chamberlain, and the house was built in 1971.
Price: $14.9 million
Size: 9,395 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,586
Inside: Renovated since Chamberlain’s days, the residence is defined by sculptural living spaces, 40-foot-high wood ceilings and walls of glass that blend indoor-outdoor spaces. At the heart of the house is a striking stone fireplace that evokes a cathedral. Built-in conversation pits surround the fireplace, while formal living and dining areas fill the space behind it.
Outside living space: Water features play a big role in the home’s design. Reflecting pools flank the front walkway to the house, while the swimming pool flows beneath a wall into part of the great room. At the edge of the property, steps descend down the hillside to a vantage overlooking the reservoir.
Represented by: Drew Fenton, Hilton & Hyland
Mougins, France
The villa-style home in the village of Mougins features two separate wings that are connected by a
 [] covered walkway.
Located near Cannes in the Maritime Alps region of southeastern France is the village of Mougins. A scenic area surrounded by forests of pine, olive and cypress trees, Mougins is known for its timeless architecture and 19th-century houses. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Fernand LĂ©ger are among those to have called the area home.
This Italianate-style villa is surrounded by more than three acres of grounds dotted with mature trees and palms. The home’s vantage allows for panoramic views of Mougins and the countryside and mountains beyond Saint Paul de Vence.
Price: $14.56 million (€12 million)
Size: 9,500 (approximate)
Price per square foot: $1,532 (€1,263)
Inside: Two buildings connected by a covered walkway comprise the villa, which has a total of 20 rooms, 10 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. Formal living spaces feature generous proportions, broad archways and high ceilings. A two-way fireplace is shared by the living and dining rooms, while the kitchen is equipped with commercial-grade appliances. The home is offered furnished with 18th and early 19th-Century French and Italian Furnishings.
Outside living space: The park-like grounds unfold in layers with various patios, lawn and landscaping. The estate has two swimming pools and a tennis court. An apartment for guests or staff also lies on the property.

Birmingham & Warwick
Aka Brum & Shakespeare (Kind of)
Phew, it’s been a while since I gave an update, so I’ll do my best to remember now!
Met up with a friend over the weekend in Birmingham.  Turns out, Birmingham is pretty industrial and there’s not a lot to do.  Apparently, everyone but me knew this already. Walked around the canals, and into some churches and then ended up shopping in the Bullring for some better winter clothes.  Started running again after watching some people finish a half-marathon.  Stayed in an area called, Digbeth, which was quite cool and hipster-y.  There was a lot of street art here and the Digbeth Food Market on the weekend. Fun fact: they filmed Peaky Blinders here, which I still have yet to watch.
On Thursday, I took a train to Warwick to see Hayley, our babysitter from York and her family.  After arriving at her house, we went to pick up her two younger boys from daycare (Toby) and primary school (Leon).  The two older boys (Sam and Rowan) walked home from secondary school. We had a pretty chill night just hanging out and catching up.
The next day I went to Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of Shakespeare.  Hayley lent me her annual pass, so I took advantage and went to everything Shakespeare within walking distance.  I started at his birthplace, then his “New Place” where he lived his adult life before it being passed down to his daughter, and Hall’s Croft, the home of one of his daughter’s and her husband.  I learned a lot about Shakespeare’s life, like he left his wife, Anne Hathaway with his “second best bed” upon his death.  The “New Place” has also been demolished into an art deco mansion in the last few hundred years, and since then that has also been demolished. They did an excavation in the early 2000’s of the site, and now have a better understanding of the original footprint of the house.  Today, only a well remains at the site of the “New Place.” Also his original birthplace became a B&B after his father died.  After all this Shakespeare, I went up the Royal Shakespeare Theatre building, just to the 4th floor to get a free view of the town.
After making my way back to Hayley’s, I walked around Warwick and then to her house for dinner with her boys.  She and I then went to the University of Warwick’s Art Centre for a play on climate change and Q&A, which was part of the inaugural Change Festival. We had a much better discussion in her kitchen following the evening on everything in the last 19 years!

10 Tolkienfic Stories I Have Read and Loved in the Past Month
Fandom Snowflake Day 5 asked participants to "post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create." I went *ahem* a little above and beyond. I did ten. I've been reading a lot of Tolkienfic lately--it is one of my goals for the year to make time for reading, as it is often one of the fandom pleasures that falls first to the obligations of running a website--and I wanted to share some of my favorites from among what I've read. I feel like I need to make up for a few years of rarely reading and commenting while I was in grad school. Most of these stories are Silmarillion-based, but there are a few that are from The Lord of the Rings. Please check them out and, if you like them, consider leaving the author a note letting them know. The Choice by Keiliss. Thank goodness the prompt that inspired this story gives away the ending or I don't think I would have been able to take it. I still teared up at multiple points in this tenderly written and beautifully human story about Elladan and his daughter making their choice about whether or not to sail for Aman. Few of Tolkien's unanswered question have inspired the speculation, angst, and fanfic as the question of whether the sons of Elrond sailed, and Kei's story deserves a place at the top of the heap. Her characterization, too, of characters who only appear in passing speak of why she is one of the giants of Tolkienfic. This story is simply wonderful. Elendili by @hadas-the-unseelie. I picked up this story for the Fandom Snowflake challenge that asked participants to reach out to someone new. I'll admit that I hesitated. It mentions a teenage girl and glitter in the summary, and while I totally support teenagers writing fanfic--a lot of my students do and I think it's awesome!--I also reserve the right not to read said fanfic when it's not one of my students! And the story was long. But, in the Snowflake spirit, I gave it a go and OMG. OMG, y'all. It is probably the strangest story I will rec here--which anyone who knows me will know I mean as a compliment--but Hadas is one of those writers with a gift for wielding words like a knife between my bones where they actually hurt. The imagery is stunning: sometimes gritty and very anchored in Modern-earth (where this story is set) and sometimes ethereal and otherworldly, making that familiar world of colleges and coffee shops Elvish somehow. Eyes Bright with Honor by heget. Heget is working on telling the tales of the ten companions who died in the dungeon with Finrod in defense of Beren. The Beren and Luthien story has never particularly entranced me (Finrod's on the other hand ... *ahem*), but I walked away from this story getting it: getting some of the magic that people (including Tolkien) see in that story and in the character of Beren in particular. The story meanders through time, mostly looking back to the life of the OC Consael whose story Heget tells in this piece, and it is a story where the pieces all coalesce and make beautiful sense in the end. This is one of the most horrifying episodes in The Silmarillion to me, yet I could walk away from this story with a rare sense of feeling uplifted and hopeful instead of imagining those eyes kindling in the dark ... Heget plans to write about all ten companions, and I will be checking out the other pieces in the series on the strength of this one. Galadriel: There and Back Again by @hhimring. If someone were to task me with writing the life of Galadriel, I would sweat over it for a year and turn out a sprawling, half-million word epic. And I still don't think I could top this story. Himring is perhaps one of the most underappreciated masters of Silmfic, and this story shows why. Her Galadriel manages to be stubborn, strong, and vulnerable with a no-nonsense wisdom that probably explains her survival alone (almost) of her family. And in well under 2000 words! Every wrenching, poignant word counts in this piece that stitches together the Galadriel who competed with (and feared) FĂ«anor and she who gave Frodo the light of EĂ€rendil that saved him. Home for Midwinter by Tallulah Red. I will echo Tal's several reviews on the LotRGenFic community--this was written for their annual Yule Exchange--who praised the world-building in this story. The story was written for Indy, who wanted to see Maglor adopt a family from among the Avari. Although a short piece, it sparkles with believable characters and culture, taking a different take on the Avari than most writers do. And in a fandom that has a Maglor-walks-by-the-shore-and-laments trope, it was refreshing to read a story that allows him happiness in the future while also not shying from his history. Journeys by @independence1776. This story was written for me, for the MPTT/LotRGen Yule Exchange. I remember writing a story once for a friend that she described fitting like a pair of gloves that could only be selected by someone who knew her well. This is such a story. It is Maedhros and Maglor and a conversation in a cave, yet the dialogue simmers with much more than can be seen on the surface, and Indy achieves an easy camaraderie between the brothers that is delightful to read. It is simply wonderful, like Indy dove into my mind and extracted a story I would have loved to have written for my own verse. I'm officially adopting this one into the Felakverse. The Purple Dress by Avon. This story gave me chills. Set in NĂșmenor, a young woman flouts convention in her choice of dress color ... but this story is so much more than that. It is one of those pieces that unspools in slow revelations so that, as a reader, you're never entirely on steady ground. And once you realize what is going on, you're not there yet; the ending simmers with delicious double entendre. There's A LOT going on in this short piece, and every word and image count. Though the Road Darkens by @marta-bee. Marta's story tells the tale of Gorlim the Unhappy through the eyes of his companion Gildor. The voice in this story is simply magnificent; you feel like you are sitting at the fireside, hearing Gildor tell his tale. A complicated story, it brings in folklore, myth (Middle- and Modern-earth), and questions the historical tradition, offering different look at Gorlim's story. Oh, and it's beautifully written, the kind of words you want to lean back and savor like wine. If you're thinking--like I probably would have if Marta hadn't asked me to read this story--that you'd never be interested in a story about Gorlim, take a chance and prove yourself wrong. (I'm happy to admit that I was! :) Winter Came Earlier by @heartofoshun. She calls this "just a bit of fluff" in the summary, but saying this is "just" fluff is like saying the Grand Canyon is "just" a sidewalk crack. This is a layered and thought-provoking story in which Elladan faces, through Arwen and Aragorn, his own worries about mortality and what it means to be Peredhil. But don't let my summary scare you into thinking that this is a deep, heavy story that one can only read in a bright-lit room. This is Oshun, after all, and her work is as ever sweetened with romance and humor that balance perfectly with the deeper themes of this short, lovely work. Winter Sons of Gondor by Elwen. It was my turn this month on MPTT to archive the challenge stories. This necessitates skimming each piece so that I can add the meta-data to it about character, genre, et cetera. Most of the time I do just that--skim--and I started to do so with this story but got hooked in despite my intentions to make quick work of posting it. Young Boromir and Faramir are coping with the pressures of their father's growing madness when they decide to escape for a morning to enjoy a rare snowfall. But their journey takes an unexpected turn. This story is a page-turner, and I could not have left off reading it and gone back to skimming if I'd wanted to.

England cricketing stars recognised at Winter ceremonies
England and Somerset cricketing stars, Anya Shrubsole MBE and Marcus Trescothick MBE, will both receive Honorary Degrees today (Tuesday 11 December) as part of the University of Bath’s Winter Graduation Ceremonies.
Anya is one of Britain’s greatest women cricketers who has excelled not only through her achievements on the sporting field, but also off the field as a role model for future generations of athletes.
Born and educated in Bath, Anya attended Hayesfield School. Growing up she was an all-round sportswoman although cricket became her passion. She went on to play for Bath where her development as a player was supported at a time when the women’s game had nowhere near the profile that it does today.
She was the first girl to be selected for the Somerset Academy at 13. Her England debut came in 2008 as a 16-year-old and she won the match award in her first Twenty20 international nine days later. It was in 2017, however, that she really made her mark on the history of British sport through an outstanding bowling performance that resulted in England winning the ICC Women’s World Cup Final against India at Lords.
As Anya’s orator, Professor Simone Fullager (Department for Health), will say: “This moment symbolised an historical turning point as women’s cricket gained the respect and public recognition that it has long deserved.”
Anya added: “It is an unbelievable privilege to receive an honorary degree from The University of Bath. As someone who was born and raised in Bath, I recognise the outstanding contribution the University has made to the City in particular to its sporting pedigree.
"As a youth, I spent a lot of time in and around the University and have made use of its world class facilities which no doubt contributed to my ambition to play professional cricket. I am proud to be recognised amongst those who have come before me and hope that this award will inspire others, particularly within women’s sport, to achieve their full potential in a world where women’s sport is blossoming.
“Congratulations to all those who are graduating this year. There are many who will doubt you, and you may even doubt yourself. However, your commitment, dedication and hard work will overcome this if you are serious about achieving your goals. As you may have found with your studies, when it seemed it could not be done, you’ll be glad you never gave up. Apply this to all your future endeavours because you never know what is possible.”
For equally outstanding services to cricket, as well as for his openness and candour in helping and continuing to help others with mental health issues, the University will also recognise the incredible achievements of Marcus Trescothick.
Born locally in Keynsham, Marcus played cricket for his school, Avon Schools, West of England Schools, Keynsham and Somerset U19s. Aged just 15 and compiling a staggering 4,000 runs over one summer in 1991 Marcus received the ‘Outstanding Young Cricketer of the Year’ award from the Cricketer magazine.
He was subsequently selected for England Under-17s and awarded a professional contract with Somerset CC in 1992. In over 800 matches for Somerset, he scored more than 28,000 runs, and holds records for the number of centuries scored and outfield catches taken, for the county.
International recognition came with England A in 1999, and with the Senior team in 2000. He had an excellent international career, across 76 tests in which he scored nearly 6,000 runs. When England regained the Ashes for the first time in 20 years in the legendary 2005 series, Marcus averaged over 40 and he was awarded an MBE for his part in the victory.
His distinguished and continuing county career is now combined with expert commentary for Sky TV.
In 2006, episodes of anxiety and major depression forced his withdrawal from international cricket. He made the England tour to Australia in 2006-07, but his illness forced him to come home. He was unable to return to international cricket, and he retired from it in 2008. In that year, he released an autobiography, ‘Coming Back to Me’.
This book won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and resulted in Marcus becoming a Patron of Anxiety UK.
As orator, Professor Roland Jones (Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology) will reflect on the importance of Marcus’ openness and candour about his mental health issues: “His willingness to bring these issues into the public spotlight, was widely commended for its honesty and integrity.”
Marcus Trescothick said: “It’s a great honour to receive this recognition from the University of Bath and to be back in the City where I spent so many of my formative years. The University has such a strong reputation when it comes to sport, science and health and it’s the applied nature of everything that it does in these fields that makes me excited about the association I hope to forge in the years ahead. My sincere congratulations to all those graduating in this week’s Winter Graduation ceremonies.”
