Jala Neti Yogic Cleansing | Mahi Yoga School
The Yogic Context:
Let’s begin by looking at one of the most important yogic texts; The Hatha Yoga Pradeepika. The text describes six yogic purification practices; the Shatkarmas. These purification practices have been used by yogis throughout time, in order to cleanse the physical body and prepare the mind for yoga’s deeper practices. The techniques lead to a purified body by removing toxins, leaving it strong and disease-free. This then allows for the prana or life force to flow freely through the body’s energy channels regenerating the body’s organs, and energetical field and allowing for access to deeper concentration and ultimately access to the higher consciousness through other yogic practices such as meditation. Neti is the first step of these six purification techniques.
What Are The Six Shatkarmas?
Dhauti, Basti, Neti, Trataka, Nauli and Kapalbhati.
A Closer Look At Jala Neti:
Neti, or Jala neti- a Sanskrit word, jala, means “water” and neti means to “guide”.
The nasal cleansing technique has its origin in ancient India and has been practicing throughout time in both yoga and its sister science- Ayurveda.
Neti is used to cleanse the sinuses, and the air passages in the head. It has been practiced using the Neti-pot, a small teapot-like instrument with a small thin spout that channels the water through the nose.
Nasal hygiene along with other internal cleansing practices consider as important as brushing your teeth in Yoga and Ayurveda. Our sinus cavities can become clogged and blocked with impurities, which can cause a variety of problems further on.
By practicing nasal hygiene using the Neti pot you can avoid many conditions such as infections, congestion, migraine, headaches, allergies, and asthma.
Neti is designed as a very simple, straightforward practice that can be incorporated into your daily routine, along with things such as brushing your hair and teeth. Taking just a few minutes, Neti is designed to be carried out in the morning on a regular basis.
The Neti pot (a small teapot-like apparatus, as mentioned before) channels water through one nostril which flows out through the other nostril carrying with it any trapped allergens or germs and relieving the symptoms of congestion etc. as it exits the body.
While this technique may be unknown to many it has been used in India for hundreds of years.
It is an incredibly easy, quick and harmless practice that can give remarkable benefits. A bonus is that you don’t need to invest in any special expensive equipment or even leave the comfort of your home to practice Neti. All you need is a simple pot.
Tumblr media
The Benefits Of Jala Neti:
Neti helps to maintain nasal hygiene by removing the dirt and bacteria trapped along with the mucus in the nostrils.
removes dirt and bacteria trapped with the mucus in nostrils.
It desensitizes sensitive tissues inside the nose which can cause rhinitis, asthma, or allergy.
Can help alleviate health problems such as sinusitis, migraine, headaches, ear problems, and middle ear infections.
Jala Neti can help with upper respiratory complaints, sore throats, tonsils, and dry coughs.
It can clear the eye ducts and improve vision.
Jala Neti also calms the mind and nervous system which helps in relieving stress and giving clarity to the mind.
It helps can aid with asthmatic conditions and improve breathing quality.
Can help with middle ear infections.
Clearing the nasal passageways helps improve digestion and sense of smell.
It deepens the quality of meditation
How To Practice Jala Neti:
mix 1 tablespoon of salt to one liter of warm water. the water should be slightly warm so that it does not irritate the tissues inside the nostrils.
Pour saltwater into the Neti Pot can be made of copper, steel, ceramic, plastic or other materials.
Place the spout of the pot into one nostril.
Tilt your head gently keeping the spout on the upper side. Open your mouth (Breathing should be done through the mouth during the process). Water will begin to pour out of the empty nostril, you can adjust the tilt of the head until this happens. Continue till the water in the pot is complete.
Fill the pot again with salt water and do the same on the other nostril.
You can repeat this process any number of times. Depending on the need.
Note- Jal Neti should be practising only under the guidance of an expert practitioner.
At Mahi Yoga School we instruct Jala Neti as part of the Shatkarmas. Carefully explaining the significance of Jal Neti Kriya, we guide our students in the special practice of shatkarmas or yoga kriyas.
We also guide our students through the process of ‘sutra neti’ where a thick strong thread is inserted into the nose and pulled out from the mouth, to aid the cleansing process of the passages. We also instruct the other 4 cleansing kriyas for a complete detox effect in the true yogic tradition.
If you are wishing for a blissful detoxification experience that will help you along the way to a healthier happier life.

Top 10 Yoga Teacher Training Courses in India: A Journey to Mastery!
India is the first place from where yoga originated from; hence, it comes as no surprise that this is one of the finest countries to go for yoga instructor instruction. India as a country with an extensive yogic background is filled with experienced teachers through which, students get a distinct chance to learn. In India, you must search through various yoga schools and programs to choose the best one that suits your needs and interests. You can look for questions like what style of yoga is being taught, how long will the program last for, where is the school located, and how much will you pay to be trained. After your selection of an institution, prepare for an engaging transformation. It entails much more than that by merely acquiring knowledge of how to teach yoga asanas.  It is also on the question of furthering one’s own understanding of yogic philosophy and lifestyle. The eight limbs of yoga, the chakras and the nadis will be revealed to you. In addition, you will be taught pranayama (the practice of controlled breath), meditation, and mantra chanting. Apart from the theory of yoga practice, your time will be mostly occupied with actual yoga poses. Be prepared for several hours of asana practice per day. In that regard, your teachers will make sure that you have positioned yourself correctly for every pose. Also, you will be taught on how to adjust for individual students’ poses and how to make sequences that are difficult yet safe. There is no doubt that yoga teacher training in India is very demanding, but it can be very fruitful too. By the end of the training, you will have grasped knowledge about everything that you need to know about yoga and be prepared to teach it to others. Becoming A Yoga Teacher A Step-By-Step Guide
Tumblr media
Yoga teacher training is in trend, but that is no reason to jump into it. As the yoga industry gets more saturated, due to a certain eagerness to turn into Yoga coaches, you need to find a sure-shot way to remain impactful. Globally, yoga has turned into a career and lifestyle. Therefore, you must also be looking at a career to become a yoga teacher. Yoga teacher training is a must, if you want to become a professional yoga teacher.
But, before you jump into the process, there are certain other things that you need to take note of.
Who Is Yoga Teacher Training For?
If you are someone who is of the idea that Yoga TTC is the way out, as yoga teachers are in demand, then wait! Yoga is a career later, and a way of life at first. You need to find out if you are ready to give up on certain things, like late start to the day, fast food, or loud aerobics. Yoga is a journey of self-discovery, so you need to take some time out from your busy schedule to look within.
Additionally, you must have a lot of dedication and passion. The first one is to practice yoga yourself, on a daily basis, and the second one is to teach it to others. Your physical and mental fitness also matters. You must also be communicative, as you have to deal with people from all walks of life. And, empathetic as well.
Basic Requirements To Become One
Now, there are some basic requirements or rather criteria that you need to fulfil. You must be at least 18 years old. Most yoga schools today ask for a basic 200 RYT, but something more is always welcome. You can also start off with the 200 RYT. You should be eager to maintain your qualifications by going for refresher courses as well. The more knowledge you gather, the better it is for you.
Now, let us gear up to find out the steps leading to a career as a yoga teacher.
How To Become A Certified Yoga Teacher?
The first step to become a certified yoga teacher is to start your practice. It will help in building a strong foundation for yourself. Start as early as you can, so that you can practice the fundamentals. The background of yoga and yoga ethics is extremely important in this context. You can also attend religious sermons, to understand the Vedas and Upanishads. Such knowledge will help you to gain an edge over the other teachers.
Choose a yoga style. It makes sense to do some research on your part. Hatha Yoga is the simplest foundational form that you can start with. It helps in creating a strong foundation, which will help you to move ahead in your yoga career. Some of the other styles that are generally taught, after you have mastered Hatha Yoga to a certain extent, are Ashtanga-Vinyasa Yoga and Yin Yoga. After you have strengthened your core and purified the internal organs to a certain extent, you will be able to reach new heights in your spiritual quest.
Find out the right yoga teacher training courses. This is absolutely essential as there are so many schools and so many locations that boast of being conducive for yoga practice. Some of the top locations in India are Goa, Dharamshala, Rishikesh, Gokarna, Mysore, and Kerala. After you have finalized the location, search for reviews and updates on each school there. The courses are also varied. You have to start with the 200 hours TTC. Yoga Alliance accreditation is also important, as it gives you an edge over the others.
The 200 hr yoga teacher training course is one that has garnered a lot of popularity in this context. It is a well-curated and sequential training that prepares one for accuracy and teaching skills. It has been designed to deepen your knowledge in yoga. For the layman, yoga is about twists, turns, and inversions. However, real yoga is much more than that. It includes meditation, Pranayama, bandhas, mudras, and Shatkarma Kriyas, as well. It also includes yoga history and philosophy. The study of these subjects completes your knowledge and makes you appear more convincing in front of others.
After you have successfully completed the yoga teacher training, you must apply for the certification. It is a separate process, in which you need to apply to Yoga Alliance with your candidature number. Thereafter, your name goes up on the yoga directory. You can be looked up across the globe, and that is how students land jobs. It is the RYT 200 that we are talking about.
Launching your teaching career. After you have completed your yoga teacher training and have received the certification, as well, things do not end there. Do not think that, now everything will be a bed of roses. You need to be open about job searches. Always be vigilant, and keep an eye and ear open to notice job vacancies. In this rush, you may otherwise miss a good one. Apart from that, you must keep contact with the other students who are from other nationalities. They are the ones who can help you to secure a job elsewhere. Their references may also be needed, when you are applying for jobs in their country.
Final Words
Shree Hari Yoga School is one of the best schools in India, with several branches. You can complete your yoga TTC from their school. Apart from being Yoga Alliance accredited, they are also quite adept and responsive. You will also get ample job assistance from them. Volunteering at any of their branches will help you to secure jobs later. References also work that way.
You can join the best school of yoga, and pave the pathway for success. There will be ample scope, as you get motivated by the best teachers teaching at the school. You will come out to be a changed human being and a good teacher. And that is what the sector needs today.
