The crown is always a burden, but it cannot be borne if you cannot stand.
Black Sails - XXIV.
#black sails#blacksailsedit#james flint#anne bonny#zethu dlomo#*#thoughts and feelings about this ep:#1. an overarching theme of the show as a whole is the power of a story right#but another complementary theme we see laid out plainly in this ep is the idea of literacy as a weapon#this was brought up all the way back in s1 i think when flint is preoccupied with billy#he says that gates didn't want 'lettered men' on the crew bc they're a threat to power essentially#and then in 3.1 we have that awful man commenting on the novelty of max being a 'literate negress'#and then in 3.6 we have papa scott explicitly saying to madi i needed you to read bc you need to understand who you're going to fight#but he also taught eleanor#and look at the three of these women (and scott himself) and consider how they use that power#also i agree with the fathoms deep ladies' theory that vane is illiterate#which is interesting considering how significant this theme is at this point in the show (woodes's book is a whole Thing this season too)#so this flaw of his further indicative of him not having a place in this impending war#which ties in well with his fate#2. the fathoms deep ladies also pointed out that vane is... not himself around teach?#he's still and quiet in a way that is unusual for him#like when he calls flint 'diminished' i was like bitch you're the one who seems diminished here!#and i wonder if this is part of the father figure issue- who was he trying to replace when he cleaved himself to teach in his youth?#albinus? likely i think#considering when we first met him i actually thought he was blackbeard#and also consider what we know of max's backstory- could albinus be vane's father?#anyway what i'm getting at here is i don't think teach and vane are a good match#(anne is teach's best match imo but i'll talk about that more with a later ep)#and 3. vane standing up to teach to defend flint is a direct parallel to james vs lord hamilton in That Scene#and the fact that they never let flint/vane happen might be THE thing that bothers me most about this show that i love so much
