"If Winn wasnt a blatant allegory for the causes and effects of evangelical power" okay I agree that's what the writers did with her, but my friend- does that make any g-ddamn sense? Any sense at all? Do leaders in the Christian American Evangelical community get put in prison for being Evangelical (because Kai Winn WAS)?
#My problem with this episode revolves around a few things#1) directly associating the word orthodox (which is never explained) with terrorism (derogatory)#2) mixing the metaphors of Bajor as an oppressed group and comparisons to Judaism + other groups who are not Evangelical#With the attempt at a hit piece against Evangelicals censoring schools#3) Keiko- as much as I love her- is not actually trained to be a teacher. She is literally the equivalent of an American military wife#Teaching kids English because she's bored and we think 'random woman as young as 16 with no special education' is acceptable as a teacher#She's a smart woman and an accomplished botanist. That does not make her a trained educator#4) I could be misremebering but the compromise of mentioning Bajoran belief was brought up and Keiko refused#It wasn't acceptable to teach both the 'scientific' and 'cultural' elements (which is a better rounded education anyway)#It's like having a geography class in Hawaii and saying being asked to mention Pele so people understand cultural context is you being#Censored if not worse than that#Now I don't remember if we saw Winn also refuse that compromise or not bc it's been Awhile but I do remember people getting very angry#Because I stated the mixed metaphors weaken the episode especially coming from the background of knowing how oppressed religious groups act#I think they could have made an episode about how conservative/reactionary/whatever Bajorans took issue with Keikos school#But for it to work they would need to actually analyze the problems that arise /while being respectful and nuanced/#And I'll admit it I don't know if that would've been possible on the count of being respectful because the writers on this show would have#Reached for a Jewish analogue and likely have done something more explicitly anti-Orthodox and inflammatory bc people still can't really#Have a nuanced discussion of the problems in Orthodox communities without degrading them and calling them crazy#ESPECIALLY OTHER JEWISH PEOPLE. You would think intracommunity discussion would be more respectful#Do not screenshot & repost my tags. Respectfully
