How is it that Martin is "family" enough for the doctor to discuss Becca's medical problems with him - before telling Becca herself about them - but not family enough to come to the OR?

Also, I don't see why Martin didn't just lie and say that he was actually her father. Or her husband, given that Paul wasn't around.
